Low-dimensional nanostructures, especially one-dimensional materials, exhibit remarkable anisotropic characteristics due to their low symmetry, making them promising candidates for polarization-sensitive photodetection. Here, we present a chemical vapor deposition synthesis method for tellurium suboxide (TeOx), confirming the practicality of photodetectors constructed from TeOx nanowires (NWs) in high-responsivity, broadband, and polarization-sensitive detection. By precisely controlling the thermodynamics and kinetics of TeOx NWs growth, we achieve large-scale growth of TeOx NWs with highly controllable dimensions and propose a method to induce intrinsic built-in strain in TeOx NWs. Photodetectors based on quasi-one-dimensional TeOx NWs with ohmic contact demonstrate broadband spectral response (638–1550 nm), high responsivity (13 700 mA·W−1), and superior air stability. Particularly, owing to the inherent structural anisotropy of the photodetectors, they exhibit polarization-sensitive photodetection, with anisotropy ratios of 1.70 and 1.71 at 638 and 808 nm, respectively. We measured the austenitic FeCr18Ni12.5 stainless steel Hugoniot as a function of crystallographic direction to approximately 60 GPa. We shock-compressed FeCr18Ni12.5 samples oriented along ⟨ 100 ⟩ , ⟨ 110 ⟩ , and ⟨ 111 ⟩ to mean stresses ranging 30.5–58.1 GPa via Ta plate impact in a large-bore powder gun and measured the free-surface velocities with laser interferometry. We unambiguously observed the largest post-shock free-surface velocity along ⟨ 100 ⟩ in each experiment, which consequently produced the lowest shock velocity along that orientation. However, the propagation of experimental uncertainties through the impedance matching scheme used to compute the shock velocity produced sufficient uncertainty overlap to preclude definitive conclusion of Hugoniot anisotropy. Non-reciprocal (NR) effective interactions violating Newton's third law occur in many biological systems, but can also be engineered in synthetic, colloidal systems. Recent research has shown that such NR interactions can have tremendous effects on the overall collective behavior and pattern formation, but can also influence aggregation processes on the particle scale. Here, we focus on the impact of non-reciprocity on the self-assembly of a colloidal system (originally passive) with anisotropic interactions whose character is tunable by external fields. In the absence of non-reciprocity, that is, under equilibrium conditions, the colloids form square-like and hexagonal aggregates with extremely long lifetimes yet no large-scale phase separation [Kogler et al., Soft Matter 11, 7356 (2015)], indicating kinetic trapping. Here, we study, based on Brownian dynamics simulations in 2D, an NR version of this model consisting of two species with reciprocal isotropic, but NR anisotropic interactions. We find that NR induces an effective propulsion of particle pairs and small aggregates ("active colloidal molecules") forming at the initial stages of self-assembly, an indication of the NR-induced non-equilibrium. The shape and stability of these initial clusters strongly depend on the degree of anisotropy. At longer times, we find, for weak NR interactions, large (even system-spanning) clusters where single particles can escape and enter at the boundaries, in stark contrast to the small rigid aggregates appearing at the same time in the passive case. In this sense, weak NR shortcuts the aggregation. Increasing the degree of NR (and thus, propulsion), we even observe large-scale phase separation if the interactions are weakly anisotropic. In contrast, systems with strong NR and anisotropy remain essentially disordered. Overall, the NR interactions are shown to destabilize the rigid aggregates interrupting self-assembly and phase separation in the passive case, thereby helping the system to overcome kinetic barriers. Narrow escape theory deals with the first passage of a particle diffusing in a cavity with small circular windows on the cavity wall to one of the windows. Assuming that (i) the cavity has no size anisotropy and (ii) all windows are sufficiently far away from each other, the theory provides an analytical expression for the particle mean first-passage time (MFPT) to one of the windows. This expression shows that the MFPT depends on the only global parameter of the cavity, its volume, independent of the cavity shape, and is inversely proportional to the product of the particle diffusivity and the sum of the window radii. Amazing simplicity and universality of this result raises the question of the range of its applicability. To shed some light on this issue, we study the narrow escape problem in a cylindrical cavity of arbitrary size anisotropy with two small windows arbitrarily located on the cavity side wall. We derive an approximate analytical solution for the MFPT, which smoothly goes from the conventional narrow escape solution in an isotropic cavity when the windows are sufficiently far away from each other to a qualitatively different solution in a long cylindrical cavity (the cavity length significantly exceeds its radius). Our solution demonstrates the mutual influence of the windows on the MFPT and shows how it depends on the inter-window distance. A key step in finding the solution is an approximate replacement of the initial three-dimensional problem by an equivalent one-dimensional one, where the particle diffuses along the cavity axis and the small absorbing windows are modeled by delta-function sinks. Brownian dynamics simulations are used to establish the range of applicability of our approximate approach and to learn what it means that the two windows are far away from each other. The effect of pressure on Raman scattering (RS) in bulk H f S 2 is investigated under hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic pressure conditions. The RS line shape does not change significantly in the hydrostatic regime up to P = 9.6 GPa, showing a systematic blueshift of the spectral features. In a non-hydrostatic environment, seven peaks appear in the spectrum at P = 7 GPa, which dominate the RS line shape up to P = 10.5 GPa. The change in the RS line shape manifests a pressure-induced phase transition in H f S 2. The simultaneous observation of both low-pressure (LP) and high-pressure (HP) related RS peaks suggests the coexistence of two different phases over a wide pressure range. It is found that the HP-related phase is metastable and persists during the decompression cycle down to P = 1.2 GPa, while the LP-related features eventually recover at even lower pressure. The angle-resolved polarized RS performed under P = 7.4 GPa revealed a strong in-plane anisotropy of both the LP-related A 1 g mode and the HP peaks. The anisotropy is related to the possible distortion of the structure induced by the non-hydrostatic component of the pressure. J-aggregates, which are supramolecular assemblies that exhibit unique optical properties owing to their excitonic interactions, have potential applications in artificial light-harvesting systems and fluorescence biosensing. Although J-aggregates are formed in solution, in situ observations of their structures and behaviors in solution remain scarce. In this study, we investigated the J-aggregates of 1,1′-dioctadecyl-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate [DiIC18(3)] in methanol/water (M/W) binary solvents using fluorescence imaging as well as polarized absorption and fluorescence measurements to explore the relationship between their structure and macroscopic optical properties under static conditions. Fluorescence images revealed that the DiIC18(3) J-aggregates have fibrous structures in the M/W = 44/56 (v/v) binary solvent. We measured the polarization-angle dependence of the fluorescence intensity of the fibrous J-aggregates to determine the direction of their transition dipole moment. Furthermore, the J-band absorbance was dependent on the polarization angle of the linearly polarized incident light, even in the absence of an external force such as that generated by a flow or stirring, indicating that the J-aggregates "spontaneously" aligned in solution. We also monitored the time evolution of the degree of alignment of the fibrous J-aggregates, which revealed that the formation and elongation of the fibers induced their alignment, resulting in the observed macroscopic optical anisotropy in solution. A key piece for spintronic applications, the so-called electron g -factor engineering is still predominantly based on the semiconductor bulk g factor and its dependence on the bandgap energy. In nanostructures, however, the mesoscopic confinement introduces exclusive anisotropies, transforming scalar g factors into tensors, enabling different renormalization mechanisms as routes for fine-tuning the electron g factor. These questions we address in this comparative theoretical analysis between the obtained electron g -factor (tensor) anisotropies for realistic InAs | AlSb - and In 0.53 Ga 0.47 As | InP -based multilayers. The electron g -factor anisotropy, i.e., the difference between g factors for magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the interfaces, is analytically calculated via perturbation theory using the envelope-function approach based on the eight-band Kane model. Effects from bulk, interfacing, tunnel coupling, and structure inversion asymmetry are systematically introduced within a transparent comparative view; differences between obtained anisotropies, such as in the magnitude, sign, and other fine details, are analyzed in terms of the heterostructure parameters, mapped over different confining and tunnel-coupling regimes without requiring elaborated numerical computations. We conducted a study on the variations of the fragment anisotropy parameters (β) along the Fano profiles for the predissociation of the D2 molecule. These variations, known as β profiles, were measured for the D(2l) fragments from the predissociation of the 4 p π D ′ Π u 1 υ ′ = 1 and 4 p σ B ″ Σ u + 1 υ ′ = 2 states. The measured β profiles show significant asymmetry and broader linewidths compared to the corresponding Fano profiles. By fitting the β profiles, we were able to determine the fragment anisotropy parameters associated with the resonance state, continuum state, and the interference effect between them. Additionally, we determined the ratios of the absorption cross sections between the unperturbed and perturbed continuum states interacting with the resonance states although these ratios were found to be very small. Furthermore, we derived approximate formulas to calculate the parameters characterizing the β profile. Despite the linewidths of the four Fano profiles being narrower than our instrumental resolution, we were still able to determine the product of the linewidth with the Fano q parameters. Hole mobility anisotropy in 4H-SiC was investigated based on both experimental and theoretical approaches. First, the authors established a complete database of the anisotropic hole mobility along both directions parallel and perpendicular to the c -axis in 4H-SiC over the wide acceptor density and temperature ranges by preparing Hall bar structures on p-type SiC(11 2 ¯ 0) epitaxial layers. Empirical equations for the mobility along each direction vs the acceptor density and temperature were determined, which should be useful for the simulation and designing of any SiC devices. In addition to that, the anisotropy in the hole mobility was extracted from the experimental results, and its origin was discussed focusing on that in the effective mass (m ∗) of holes. The obtained mobility ratio was far from the m ∗ ratio at the valence band maximum, and an averaged m ∗ along each direction was determined by theoretical calculation taking into account the energy distribution of holes. Consequently, the authors revealed that the anisotropic hole mobility is explained quantitatively by the anisotropic m ∗ considering the E – k dispersion over the entire first Brillouin zone. With the aim of producing realistic coarse-grained models of homopolymers, we introduce a tabulated backbone-oriented anisotropic potential. The parameters of the model are optimized using statistical trajectory matching. The impact of grain anisotropy is evaluated at different coarse-graining levels using cis-polybutadiene as a test case. We show that, at the same time, tuning the aspect ratio of the grains can lead to a better density and structure and may reduce the unphysical bond crossings by up to 90%, without increasing the computation time too much and thereby jeopardizing the main advantage of coarse-grained models. We report an investigation into the substantially large and customizable exchange anisotropy (HEA) and coercivity (HC) in a set of bottom-pinned Ir7Mn93/Co2FeAl bilayer heterostructures fabricated using ion-beam sputtering at room temperature (RT) in the presence of an in-situ in-plane static magnetic field of 1 kOe. This modulation is achieved by controlling the microstructural parameter (i.e., grain diameter) of the antiferromagnetic (AF) Ir7Mn93 (IrMn) layer. These bilayers revealed strong positive exchange anisotropy (PEA) at RT, while negative exchange anisotropy (NEA) became evident when field-cooled to 15 K in the presence of 3 kOe. By systematically controlling the AF grain diameter from ∼5.39 to ∼6.94 nm, the PEA and NEA were found to increase by a factor of ∼2.1 and ∼1.8, respectively. However, once the AF grain diameter exceeded the necessary threshold for thermal stability, further enhancement in grain diameter above ∼6.94 nm led to a reduction in both HEA and HC. This decrease was attributed to a reduction in pinning centers at the AF/FM (ferromagnet) interface. The training data are fitted by utilizing various theoretical models, such as thermal relaxation, Binek's model, and spin relaxation model. The spin relaxation model was found to be applicable to fit the complete range of training data, encompassing both thermal and athermal decay, within the context of frozen and rotatable spins. Realization of microwave-absorbing materials with "small thickness, light weight, broad bandwidth, and low reflectivity" is an invariable topic. In this paper, Sm2Fe14BHx/polyurethane (SFBH/PU) composites with planar anisotropy were prepared by reduction–diffusion (R/D) and water bath hydrogenation (WBH) process. A minimum reflection loss (RL) value reaches −59.7 dB at the perfect matching frequency of 13.79 GHz with a thickness of only 1.035 mm. Compared with unhydrogenated SFB, the bandwidth and reflectivity are significantly improved. It is mainly attributed to the fact that introduction of hydrogen atoms effectively modulates the electromagnetic parameters and increases the Snoek limit ((μ i − 1) f r) , which leads to the improvement of the high-frequency microwave absorption performance. In addition, the bandwidth equation is derived and simplified from the perspective of the reflected wave at the interface, which is in good agreement with the measured results. It is shown that structural disorder-in the form of anisotropic, picoscale atomic displacements-modulates the refractive index tensor and results in the giant optical anisotropy observed in BaTiS3, a quasi-1D hexagonal chalcogenide. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal the presence of antipolar displacements of Ti atoms within adjacent TiS6 chains along the c-axis, and threefold degenerate Ti displacements in the a-b plane. 47/49Ti solid-state NMR provides additional evidence for those Ti displacements in the form of a three-horned NMR lineshape resulting from a low symmetry local environment around Ti atoms. Scanning transmission electron microscopy is used to directly observe the globally disordered Ti a-b plane displacements and find them to be ordered locally over a few unit cells. First-principles calculations show that the Ti a-b plane displacements selectively reduce the refractive index along the ab-plane, while having minimal impact on the refractive index along the chain direction, thus resulting in a giant enhancement in the optical anisotropy. By showing a strong connection between structural disorder with picoscale displacements and the optical response in BaTiS3, this study opens a pathway for designing optical materials with high refractive index and functionalities such as large optical anisotropy and nonlinearity.

In this work, we have performed a first-order reversal curve study of the magnetization process of a top-pinned spin valve when a Pt/Co multilayer with perpendicular to plane anisotropy is deposited on top of the structure, near the pinned layer. We find that the magnetostatic interaction with the Pt/Co multilayer largely alters the magnetization process of both the pinned and the free layer of the spin valve, giving their magnetization a perpendicular-to-plane component, although some areas remain pinned in the plane. With this complex multilayer set, we fabricated nanostrips using a patterned Pt/Co multilayer on top of the spin valve as a pinning point for the magnetic domain wall traveling through the free layer. The Pt/Co feature on top of the spin valve strip pins the domain wall, although only in the return branch of the free layer magnetoresistance loop. The transport measurements show that the associated depinning field of the Pt/Co pinning feature is relatively weak. Nevertheless, the strong influence of the Pt/Co multilayer on the spin valve, visible in the magnetic characterization, indicates that this type of pinning defect may well be a good alternative in some spintronic devices, where the application requires adjusting the pinning strength of the local defects. Photonic spin–orbit (SO) coupling is an important physical mechanism leading to numerous interesting phenomena in the systems of microcavity photons and exciton-polaritons. We report the effect of SO coupling in a tunable open-access microcavity embedded with anisotropic active media. The SO coupling associated with the TE–TM splitting results in an emergent anisotropy, which further leads to fine energy splittings allowing clear observation of the full set of eigenstates, in sharp contrast with the isotropic situation which leads to the isotropic eigenstates of spin vortices. We show that the photonic potential can be engineered by playing with the relation between the emergent anisotropy and the cavity ellipticity. All the experimental results are well reproduced by the degenerate perturbation theory. Our results constitute a significant extension to the research field of microcavity spinoptronics, with potential applications in polarization control and optical property measurement of photonic devices and materials. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy of atomically ordered L10 FeNi (the meteoritic mineral tetrataenite) is studied within a first-principles electronic structure framework. Two compositions are examined: equiatomic Fe 0.5 Ni 0.5 and an Fe-rich composition, Fe 0.56 Ni 0.44 . It is confirmed that, for the single crystals modeled in this work, the leading-order anisotropy coefficient K 1 dominates the higher-order coefficients K 2 and K 3. To enable comparison with experiment, the effects of both imperfect atomic long-range order and finite temperature are included. While our computational results initially appear to undershoot the measured experimental values for this system, careful scrutiny of the original analysis due to Néel et al. [J. Appl. Phys. 35, 873 (1964)] suggests that our computed value of K 1 is, in fact, consistent with experimental values, and that the noted discrepancy has its origins in the nanoscale polycrystalline, multivariant nature of experimental samples, that yields much larger values of K 2 and K 3 than expected a priori. These results provide fresh insight into the existing discrepancies in the literature regarding the value of tetrataenite's uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy in both natural and synthetic samples. Structural biology efforts using cryogenic electron microscopy are frequently stifled by specimens adopting preferred orientations on grids, leading to anisotropic map resolution and impeding structure determination. Tilting the specimen stage during data collection is a generalizable solution but has historically led to substantial resolution attenuation. Here, we develop updated data collection and image processing workflows and demonstrate, using multiple specimens, that resolution attenuation is negligible or significantly reduced across tilt angles. Reconstructions with and without the stage tilted as high as 60° are virtually indistinguishable. These strategies allowed the reconstruction to 3 Å resolution of a bacterial RNA polymerase with preferred orientation, containing an unnatural nucleotide for studying novel base pair recognition. Furthermore, we present a quantitative framework that allows cryo-EM practitioners to define an optimal tilt angle during data acquisition. These results reinforce the utility of employing stage tilt for data collection and provide quantitative metrics to obtain isotropic maps.

Optoelectronic functional materials with flexible and in-plane anisotropic properties has been a significant development direction of nanotechnology due to wearable and polarized optoelectronic applications. Herein, the elasticity, global band dispersion, optical dielectric properties of environmentally friendly IVB-VIA layered transition metal trichalcogenides (MX3, M = Zr, Hf; X = S, Se) are investigated systematically by density functional theory with different kinds of van der Waals correction and hybrid functional. The low elastic modulus suggests that they are appropriate for the design of flexible optoelectronic devices. Originating from the effect of d states of chalcogens and s states of transition metals, the dispersion of the valence band edge of monolayer MX3 shows that the effective mass of carriers along the wave vector kx is much heavier than that of carriers along the wave vector ky. This means that the mobility of carriers exhibits obvious in-plane anisotropy. Meanwhile, the optical dielectric properties of monolayer MX3 as well as absorbed photon flux (Jabs) of the related heterostructures display noteworthy in-plane anisotropy in the visible-IR region. The ratio of Jabs from different direction reaches up to 1.7. This work could not only promote understanding of rich photophyiscal properties of transition metal trichalcogenides, but also provide a theoretical reference for the invention of high-performance optoelectronic devices with high flexibility and anisotropy. The magnetic, elastic, and dynamical properties of L10-type FePt alloy are investigated under high pressure using first-principles calculations. The critical pressure of ferromagnetism collapse is identified as 96.7 GPa, and the alloy exhibits mechanical stability over the studied pressure range up to 120 GPa. Below the critical pressure, ductility hardly changes with pressure, and the elastic anisotropy is enhanced by pressure. The ductility and elastic anisotropy of the system show a sudden decrease beyond the critical pressure. Dynamical stabilities under ambient and high pressures are verified by phonon spectra. The alloy is dynamically stable before the critical pressure of 96.7 GPa due to spontaneous magnetization. Finally, the anisotropy of phonon density of states under high pressure is evaluated in detail, and the result indicates that the degree of anisotropy is almost independent of pressure. We develop a machine-learning method for coarse-graining condensed-phase molecular systems using anisotropic particles. The method extends currently available high-dimensional neural network potentials by addressing molecular anisotropy. We demonstrate the flexibility of the method by parametrizing single-site coarse-grained models of a rigid small molecule (benzene) and a semi-flexible organic semiconductor (sexithiophene), attaining structural accuracy close to the all-atom models for both molecules at a considerably lower computational expense. The machine-learning method of constructing the coarse-grained potential is shown to be straightforward and sufficiently robust to capture anisotropic interactions and many-body effects. The method is validated through its ability to reproduce the structural properties of the small molecule's liquid phase and the phase transitions of the semi-flexible molecule over a wide temperature range. In this paper, a class of anisotropic compact stars is analyzed in Heintzmann geometry. The Einstein field equations (EFEs) have been solved to obtain the stellar model in presence of pressure anisotropy. We have considered the g t t metric component as proposed by Heintzmann, and by solving the EFEs, the g r r metric component is evaluated in the presence of pressure anisotropy. It is noted that for an isotropic star (α = 0), the maximum mass lies within the range 1.87–3.04 M ⊙ for radii ranging between 8–13 km. For anisotropic compact stars, the maximum mass increases with α and lies within the range 1.99–3.23 M ⊙ for anisotropy parameter α = 0. 5. The physical viability of the model is examined by applying our model to study the properties of a few known compact objects. All the stability conditions are fulfilled in the proposed model. It is also interesting to note that the maximum mass calculated from our model from geometrical consideration and solving the TOV equation is approximately equal, and the radii predicted from the present model comply with the estimated radius from observations of recently observed pulsars and lighter compact objects of GW events such as GW 190814 and GW 170817. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION Construction of meat analogs based on pea protein isolate (PPI) alone by high moisture extrusion (HME) is diffocult as a result of the lack of anisotropic structures. In the present study, 0%–15% of whey protein (WP) was introduced to PPI to make hybrid blends, which were used to construct HME extrudates.WP enhanced the hardness, adhesive, cohesiveness and gumminess of the extrudates and facilitated the formation of a distinct anisotropic structure of PPI. The fibrous degrees of the extrudates containing 10% and 15% WP were around 1.50. The addition of WP, which has more ‐SH groups, increased the disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonding in the extrudates, leading to a denser cross‐linked structure. Particle size distribution and Fourier transform infrared analysis showed that WP induced more compact structured aggregates and more β‐sheet structures in the extrudates. Furthermore, the higher hydration capacity of WP may also help form a dilute melt and generate a more pronounced plug flow, assisting the formation of fiber structures of PPI.The present study demonstrates that WP is a potential modifier, which could be used to improve the structure of PPI‐based meat analogs. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. In this work, the effects of magnetic proximity coupling on electronic structures, valley polarization and magneto-crystal anisotropy of VI3/WSe2 heterostructure are studied in detail based on density functional theory. The results show that the spin-valley polarization characters of WSe2 monolayer can be induced by the proximity effect of ferromagnetic VI3 monolayer. Based on the effective Hamiltonian k ⋅ p model, a large valley polarization of 8.7 meV is observed, which is mainly contributed by the SOC effect and not magnetic exchange field. Meanwhile, the magneto-crystal anisotropy of VI3 layer is also obviously altered from the [100] to [001] magnetic axis compared to the isolated VI3 monolayer. The reduction in the interlayer space strengths the W–V atomic coupling, resulting in a significant increase in the spin and valley polarization. Compression strain shows weakening effect on the valley polarization, while the tensile strain largely enhances the valley polarization of VI3/WSe2 heterostructure, which can reach the maximum value of 29.1 meV at the tensile strain of 8%. The V spin direction (θ) has significant effect on valley polarization of WSe2 layer, which is positively correlated with the magnetization strength of V atom in the vertical direction. Furthermore, constructing the VI3/WSe2/VI3 sandwich heterostructure can induce a larger valley polarization, which can reach a maximum value of 32.4 meV. The mechanical properties of the sclera play a critical role in supporting the ocular structure and maintaining its shape. However, non-invasive measurements to quantify scleral biomechanics remain challenging. Recently introduced multi-directional optical coherence elastography (OCE) combined with an air-coupled ultrasound transducer for excitation of elastic surface waves was used to estimate phase speed and shear modulus in ex vivo rabbit globes (n = 7). The scleral phase speed (12.1 ± 3.2 m/s) was directional-dependent and higher than for corneal tissue (5.9 ± 1.4 m/s). In the tested locations, the sclera proved to be more anisotropic than the cornea by a factor of 11 in the maximum of modified planar anisotropy coefficient. The scleral shear moduli, estimated using a modified Rayleigh-Lamb wave model, showed significantly higher values in the circumferential direction (65.4 ± 31.9 kPa) than in meridional (22.5 ± 7.2 kPa); and in the anterior zone (27.3 ± 9.3 kPa) than in the posterior zone (17.8 ± 7.4 kPa). The multi-directional scanning approach allowed both quantification and radial mapping of estimated parameters within a single measurement. The results indicate that multi-directional OCE provides a valuable non-invasive assessment of scleral tissue properties that may be useful in the development of improved ocular models, the evaluation of potential myopia treatment strategies, and disease characterization and monitoring. Microactuators, capable of executing tasks typically repetitive, hazardous, or impossible for humans, hold great promise across fields such as precision medicine, environmental remediation, and swarm intelligence. However, intricate motions of microactuators normally require high complexity in design, making it increasingly challenging to realize at small scales using existing fabrication techniques. Taking inspiration from the hierarchical-anisotropy principle found in nature, we program liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) microactuators with multimodal actuation tailored to their molecular, shape, and architectural anisotropies at (sub)nanometer, micrometer, and (sub)millimeter scales, respectively. Our strategy enables diverse deformations with individual LCE microstructures, including expanding, contracting, twisting, bending, and unwinding, as well as re-programmable shape transformations of assembled LCE architectures with negative Poisson's ratios, locally adjustable actuation, and changing from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) structures. Furthermore, we design tetrahedral microactuators with well-controlled mobility and precise manipulation of both solids and liquids in various environments. This study provides a paradigm shift in the development of microactuators, unlocking a vast array of complexities achievable through manipulation at each hierarchical level of anisotropy. We investigate spherically symmetric classes of anisotropic solutions within the realm of a schematic gravitational decoupling scheme, primarily decoupling through minimal geometric deformation, applied to non-rotating, ultra-compact, self-gravitational fluid distributions. In this respect, we employ the minimal complexity factor scheme to generate physically realistic models for anisotropic matter distributions, using a well-behaved model. The zero-complexity factor condition enables us to determine the deformation function for solving the decoupled system. We explore all the structure-defining scalar variables, such as density inhomogeneity, strong energy condition, density homogeneity, and the complexity factor (an alloy of density inhomogeneity and pressure anisotropy) for the decoupling constant ranging between 0 and 1. We observe that the anisotropy vanishes when the coupling constant is set to unity. This finding holds significance as it implies that, in the context of a zero-complexity factor approach, an anisotropic matter distribution becomes perfect without requiring any isotropy requirements. This work effectively explored the impact of complexity on the composition of self-gravitational stellar distributions. This effective approach enables the development of new, physically realistic isotropic stellar models for anisotropic matter distributions. Additionally, our findings indicate that the complexity factor in static, spherically symmetric self-gravitational objects can significantly affect the nature of the matter distribution within these systems. It is concluded that the minimally deformed Durgapal-IV model features an increasing pressure profile, and the local anisotropy of pressure vanishes throughout the model under complexity-free conditions. Electrical anisotropy has a significant impact on the observation data of the magnetotelluric (MT) method; therefore, it is necessary to develop forward and inverse methods in electrical anisotropic media. Based on the axis anisotropic electric field control equations, forming a large linear equation through staggered finite difference approximation, adding boundary conditions, and using the quasi-minimum residual method to solve the equation, this study obtained MT forward modeling results in axis anisotropic media. The correctness of the algorithm was verified by comparing it with the 2D quasi-analytic solution. By designing several sets of axis anisotropic 3D models, the characteristics of the apparent resistivity tensor and tipper were analyzed. The results indicated that the py, p^y and Tzy are sensitive to changes in resistivity in the X direction of the anomalous body, whereas the pyx, paxx and Tzx are sensitive to changes in resistivity in the Y direction. The apparent resistivity tensor and tipper are insensitive to changes in resistivity in the Z direction of the anomalous body. For exploration of anisotropic media, the apparent resistivity tensor and tipper of MT can identify the changes in resistivity in two horizontal axes directions and the boundaries of the anomalous body, which has the advantages for exploration. The multi-layered media composed of layers with different sound velocities exhibit anisotropy, strong attenuation, and interface reflection in terms of sound propagation, posing challenges for conventional ultrasound imaging methods, especially in detecting deep-seated and near-interface defects. In this study, an improved far-focused pixel-based (FPB) imaging method for detecting internal defects in multi-layered media is proposed. First, the time delay calculation in the FPB method is corrected using the shortest path searching method to determine the acoustic time-of-flight. Then, phase information is extracted from the echo signal to construct a circular coherence factor (CCF) that dynamically weights the time-corrected FPB images, addressing the issue of ineffective detection of near-interface defects caused by interface reflection. Finally, considering the sound attenuation in multi-layered media, the directivity coefficient, transmission coefficient, and divergence coefficient are determined through theoretical derivation to compensate for the echo amplitude. Experimental results demonstrate that the improved FPB method significantly enhances the reflection echo from deep-seated defects, reduces the maximum relative localisation error to 0.9%, and the quantisation error to 6.4%. The proposed method also greatly improves the lateral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of internal defect imaging compared to the total focusing method (TFM) and traditional FPB method. Finding birefringent material with giant optical anisotropy is urgent for photonic applications. However, the application of existing birefringent materials is limited by restricted transparency wavelength or optical anisotropy. The process of trial and error is time‐consuming and inefficient in terms of resources, especially when compared to the vast design spaces for materials. The immense chemical space necessitates a high‐throughput approach for giant optical anisotropy materials design. Here, a full‐applied wavelength map of birefringent materials is constructed, from conventional visible expanding to ultraviolet and deep‐ultraviolet region by high‐throughput screening methods. And highlighted 579 materials birefringence exceeds the one of available commercial birefringent materials in corresponding regions. Significantly, 54 materials possess giant birefringence above 0.5 @1064 nm. Via developing a high‐throughput screening technique for microscopic structures with given coordination number, the study further characterizes a comprehensive map of functional modules featuring birefringent activeness. According to the macroscopic and microscopic dual‐functional maps, and a novel crystal Li2(HC3N3S3)∙5H2O with birefringence difference 0.532 @546 nm is designed and synthesized successfully. The borehole induced polarization method has been widely used in deep mineral exploration, oil and gas resource exploration, and water resource exploration because of its high efficiency and good exploration effect. At present, the related research on the cross-well induced polarization method assumes that the underground medium is isotropic, but the electrical characteristics of the actual earth medium are anisotropic. To analyze the influence of the anisotropic characteristics on the cross-well induced polarization method, in this paper, the anisotropic forward algorithm of conductivity and polarizability in different principal axis directions based on the finite element method is studied. A three-dimensional forward simulation of the cross-well induced polarization method in anisotropic media is realized. The effectiveness and correctness of the algorithm are verified by testing and comparing complex 3-D isotropic and anisotropic models. Anisotropic geological models of the horizontal plate and inclined plate are constructed to analyze the anisotropic influences of conductivity and polarizability in different principal axis directions on the cross-well induced polarization response. The results show that the emitter sources with different depths in the well have different influences on the electrical response of the plates. Anisotropic conductivity and polarizability in horizontal plates exhibit most pronounced characteristics in the x-direction, significantly influencing the apparent polarizability curves. However, when the resistivity and polarizability are both anisotropic, the change in the z-direction is the most complicated. When the plate is inclined, the amplitude of the electrical response curve decreases to a certain extent, and the position where the amplitude appears shifts to different degrees. Notably, the response curves of the y-direction anisotropy are basically consistent with the response curves of the isotropy, regardless of the anisotropy of the conductivity and polarizability or anomalous body tilts. The results of this study improve our understanding of the influence of anisotropy on cross-well induced polarization and provide theoretical support for the interpretation of cross-well induced polarization data considering anisotropy. The shear strength of rooted soils depends on the principal stress direction owing to the anisotropy in the soil structure and root system. Existing failure criteria cannot describe the strength anisotropy of rooted soils under general loading conditions because they are mainly based on the test results of direct shear. This study presents a new generalised three-dimensional anisotropic failure criterion for rooted soils. The model employs the projection of two independent microstructure fabric tensors (soil fabric and root network) on the stress tensor. Twenty-four drained triaxial compression and extension tests were carried out to measure the strength anisotropy of silty sand vegetated with vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides L.) at different overconsolidation ratios and calibrate the material parameters for the proposed criterion. Anisotropies of both cohesion and friction angle exist in rooted soil. Roots contribute mainly to the increase in cohesion (hence root cohesion) from most of the direct shear test data. Roots with predominant orientation aligning in the tensile strain direction contribute the most to soil strength. In the case of vetiver grass, which has a taproot system, their roots show the strongest reinforcement effect in the conventional triaxial extension path, in which the maximum portion of the roots is subjected to tension. A set of direct shear tests was conducted to investigate the effects of sand mean grain size and geomembrane surface roughness on the shear behaviour of the sand–geomembrane interface. Four types of sands with different mean grain sizes were used and the interfaces included a smooth geomembrane (SGM) and four textured ones with different asperity characteristics. The samples were prepared in a direct shear box at five sedimentation angles. The experimental results showed that the peak friction angle of the soil–textured geomembrane interface was dependent on the mean grain size, inherent anisotropy and surface roughness of the geomembrane. The shear strength of sand–textured geomembranes was two to three times larger than that of the sand–SGM interface. The peak and residual friction angles of sand-SGM interface occurred at sedimentation angle of 72° while it was 108° for sand-TGM interfaces. An increase in mean grain size increased the shear strength of the sand–textured geomembrane interface; while a reverse condition occurred for the sand–SGM interface. The shear strength occurred at larger horizontal displacement as mean particle size increased and the effect of relative roughness on peak friction angle increased with increase in mean grain size. The freeze‐casting method shows great potential for environmentally friendly and industrial scale‐up application in thermoelectric materials due to low cost, low toxicity, and pore control. The porous Ca3Co4O9 ceramics with anisotropic thermoelectric performance were fabricated by the freeze‐casting method. High porosities, hierarchical pores, and three‐dimensional (3D) networks significantly contributed to the suppressed thermal conductivity. An ultralow total thermal conductivity of 0.21 W/(m·K) was obtained. The optimized freeze‐casting conditions gave rise to a Seebeck coefficient of 232.3 µV/K. In addition, the ZT value of 0.39 was obtained at 800°C due to the manipulation of hierarchically connected pores and small portions of isolated hexagonal pores. This work provides a new route to form the 3D pores network in oxide thermoelectric ceramics, leading to a decrease in thermal conductivity and optimized thermoelectric performance parallel to the freeze‐casting direction. Predicting the angle‐resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy (ARPRS) response of anisotropic layered materials (ALMs) is the ultimate goal in the field of ARPRS research. So far, multiple physical mechanisms are studied on the representative black phosphorus (BP) to understand the intricate ARPRS response. However, the lack of a complete physical picture of the response modulation has hindered progress in response prediction. Herein, using BP as an example, a unified strategy for predicting the thickness‐dependent ARPRS response of ALMs is proposed. Crucially, with only one ARPRS measurement of a bulk ALM of interest, the response of nanoflakes of any thickness can be predicted. This is achieved based on the core concept of intrinsic Raman anisotropy (RA). Integrated experiments, analysis, and calculations reveal that the response of bulk BP is reshaped by the rarely noticed anisotropic absorption effect, which leads to an unique thickness‐independent constant modulation. Therefore, the interference‐free bulk counterpart of ALMs can serve as an ideal platform for accurately accessing intrinsic RA. Studying the anisotropic physical properties of hexagonal closed-packed (hcp) iron is essential for understanding the properties of the Earth’s inner core related to the preferred orientation of the inner core materials suggested by seismic observations. Investigating the anisotropic physical properties of hcp iron requires (1) the synthesis of hcp iron samples that exhibit several distinctive types of strong lattice preferred orientation (LPO) and (2) the quantitative LPO analysis of the samples. Here, we report the distinctive LPO of hcp iron produced from single-crystal body-centered cubic (bcc) iron compressed along three different crystallographic orientations ([100], [110], and [111]) in a diamond anvil cell based on synchrotron multiangle X-ray diffraction measurements up to 80 GPa and 300 K. The orientation relationships between hcp iron and bcc iron are consistent with the Burgers orientation relationship with variant selection. We show that the present method is a way to synthesize hcp iron with strong and characteristic LPO, which is beneficial for experimentally evaluating the anisotropic physical properties of hcp iron. Transversely isotropic media with a tilted symmetry axis (TTI) exits widely underground due to tectonic movement and mineral orientation. Traditional full waveform inversion (FWI) based on isotropic media or transversely isotropic media with a vertical symmetry axis (VTI) cannot deal with such situations. To address this limitation, TTI–based FWI was developed. However, its practical application faces challenges in estimating the symmetry axis tilt angle θt${{\theta }_{\mathrm{t}}}$. Previous studies have generally assumed that θt${{\theta }_{\mathrm{t}}}$ is equal to the strata dip angle, which is incorrect in complex structures such as salt domes and magmatic intrusion zones. Another theoretically robust way to estimate θt${{\theta }_{\mathrm{t}}}$ is to treat it as the parameter to be inverted, but there are still some problems unresolved. First, the parameter θt${{\theta }_{\mathrm{t}}}$ increases the nonlinearity of the inversion process, and its impact mechanism on inversion is not yet clear. Second, there is severe crosstalk (also known as trade‐off or coupling) between parameters, but the current parameter decoupling technique for TTI–based FWI is not mature. To address the first problem, we assess the interaction between θt${{\theta }_{\mathrm{t}}}$ and other parameters by analysing the radiation patterns in the TTI background. Our analysis reveals that θt${{\theta }_{\mathrm{t}}}$ is most coupled by S‐wave vertical velocity vs0${{v}_{{\mathrm{s}}0}}$, and θt${{\theta }_{\mathrm{t}}}$ substantially affects anisotropic parameters ε$\varepsilon $ and δ$\delta $. Therefore, we conclude that a good inversion of velocity parameters is a prerequisite for recovering θt${{\theta }_{\mathrm{t}}}$, and only after θt${{\theta }_{\mathrm{t}}}$ recovers can ε$\varepsilon $ and δ$\delta $ be recovered. This conclusion provides a natural perspective for solving the second problem. We therefore propose a multi‐step and multi‐parameter joint inversion strategy to gradually improve the quality of parameter inversion and weaken their coupling. Numerical experiments demonstrate that our strategy achieves more accurate inversion results compared to previously proposed multi‐parameter inversion strategies. In seismic exploration, it is very important to consider the presence of anisotropy in order to image the subsurface correctly. The knowledge of anisotropic parameters leads to more precise characterization of reservoir, fracture density and flow paths. However, conventional geophysical methods do not directly measure these parameters, and it is useful to have a method to estimate them from seismic data. In the weak transverse isotropy approximation, the fields to be considered are the vertical and horizontal velocity components and the Thomsen parameters ε$\rm \epsilon$ and δ$\rm \delta$. We present a method for estimating the anisotropic Thomsen parameters in the presence of weak vertical transverse isotropy using P‐wave traveltime tomography based on anisotropic ray tracing. Depending on the available information, we propose different approaches to retrieve the unknowns. A conventional three‐dimensional traveltime tomography algorithm has been extended to include anisotropic ray tracing and using the algebraic reconstruction technique or modified simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique to retrieve the unknowns. We test the method on synthetic examples for the inversion of transmitted and reflected traveltimes, and we evaluate the sensitivity of the tomographic results to the available information. The high accuracy and efficiency of traveltime calculation are critical in seismic tomography, migration, static corrections, source locations and anisotropic parameter estimation. The fast‐sweeping method is an efficient upwind finite‐difference approach for solving the eikonal equation. However, the fast‐sweeping method is accurate only along the axis directions. In two‐dimensional or higher dimensional cases, the accuracy is severely decreased in the diagonal directions due to the numerical errors in these directions. These similar numerical errors also arose in higher order fast‐sweeping method and anisotropic fast‐sweeping method. To improve the accuracy of traveltime calculation in two‐dimensional or higher dimensional space, a shortest‐path‐aided fast‐sweeping method is proposed. The shortest‐path‐aided solution is embedded into the sweeping process of the standard fast‐sweeping method to improve the traveltime accuracy in the diagonal directions. Shortest‐path‐aided fast‐sweeping method is very easy to implement nearly without additional computational cost and memory consumption. Furthermore, this method is easy to extend from two‐dimensional to higher dimensional, from low‐order to higher‐order and from isotropic to anisotropic cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interlayer wave‐induced fluid flow is an important mechanism for seismic attenuation and dispersion, as well as frequency‐dependent anisotropy, in the fluid‐saturated porous layered medium. This mechanism is closely related to the medium physical properties, and thus quantifying this mechanism is of significance for the seismic inversion of medium physical properties. Although numerous models have been proposed to quantify this mechanism, most models do not consider the effects of layer intrinsic anisotropy. To solve this problem, the effective complex‐valued and frequency‐dependent stiffness coefficients are derived for the fluid‐saturated porous medium composed of periodic transversely isotropic layers. Using the derived solutions, we study the effects of layer intrinsic anisotropy on seismic dispersion and attenuation, as well as frequency‐dependent anisotropy. It has been found that different matrix or fluid property contrasts between adjacent layers lead to different effects of intrinsic anisotropy. In addition, the effects of intrinsic anisotropy are also influenced by the fluid distribution when both matrix and fluid properties contrast among adjacent layers exist. In the low‐ and high‐frequency limits of wave‐induced fluid flow, our model reduces to the previous known results, which validates the correctness of our model. Our model can be applied in the seismic inversion of physical properties of reservoirs with intrinsic anisotropy, such as shale and tight sandstone reservoirs. In addition, our model can also be extended to cases with more complex intrinsic anisotropy and, thus, can be applied to complex anisotropic fractured reservoirs in the future. In order to find out the underlying effect of anisotropy on the failure characteristics from the mesoscopic mechanism, using the concept of fabric tensor and assumption of mutual mapping between isotropic space and anisotropic space, a compound stress is proposed based on the combination of ordinary stress and fabric tensor. This compound stress can be used to describe the primary anisotropic properties effectively. For the difference in the effect of stress-induced anisotropy on shear strength of various geotechnical materials in the deviatoric plane, a generalized failure criterion is proposed. This failure criterion can effectively describe various criteria forms from Von-Mises criterion to SMP criterion within a relatively large range. The hydrostatic pressure effect can also be indicated by the shape of the power function on the meridional plane. A primary anisotropy generalized failure criterion can be obtained when the compound stress is used to describe the new generalized failure criterion and the corresponding transformation stress method has been proposed. This method can consider the effect of native induced anisotropy and stress induced anisotropy on the shear strength simultaneously. The comparison between predicted and tested results shows that the proposed anisotropic generalized stress failure criterion and its transformation method can be applied to the geotechnical engineering practice simply, its rationality and applicability have also been verified.
