Hypothesis: Common amphiphilic drug molecules often have a more rigid nonpolar part than conventional surfactants. The rigidity is expected to influence the self-assembling properties and possibly give rise to aggregation patterns different from that of regular surfactants. Experiments: We have investigated self-assembling properties of the hydrochloride salts of adiphenine (ADP), pavatrine (PVT), and amitriptyline (AMT) at concentrations up to 50 wt% using small-angle x-ray scattering, dynamic light scattering, cryo-transmission electron microscopy, and surface tension measurements. Findings: All drugs form small micelles of oblate spheroidal shape at concentrations above the critical micelle concentrations (CMC). The micelles grow weakly in size up to about 20 wt%, where the aggregation number reaches a maximum followed by a slight decrease in size at higher drug concentrations. We observe a correlation between the decrease in micelle size at high concentrations and an increasing charge of the micelles, as the degree of ionization increases with increasing drug concentration and decreasing pH. In contrast to what has previously been reported, the aggregation behavior of all studied drugs resembles the closed association behavior of conventional surfactants with a short aliphatic chain as hydrophobic tail group i.e. the micelles are always small in size and lack a second CMC. CMC values were determined with surface tension measurements, including also lidocaine hydrochloride (LDC) and chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CHL).

We investigate the conformation of poly(2,6-diphenyl-p-phenylene oxide) (PPPO) in good and mixed solvents by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) across its ternary phase diagram. Dichloromethane was selected as a “good” solvent and heptane as a “poor” solvent whose addition eventually induces demixing and polymer precipitation. Below the overlap concentration c*, the polymer conformation is found to be well described by the polymer-excluded volume model and above by the Ornstein–Zernike expression with a correlation length ξ which depends on the concentration and solvent/nonsolvent ratio. We quantify the decrease in polymer radius of gyration Rg, increase in ξ, and effective χ parameter approaching the phase boundary. Upon flash nanoprecipitation, the characteristic particle radius (estimated by scanning electron microscopy, SEM) is found to scale with polymer concentration as well as with nonsolvent content. Significantly, the solution volume per precipitated particle remains nearly constant at all polymer concentrations. Overall, our findings correlate ternary solution structure with the fabrication of polymer nanoparticles by nonsolvent-induced phase separation and precipitation.

We investigate the effect of polymer tacticity on the phase behavior and phase separation of polymer mixtures by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Poly(α-methyl styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (PαMSAN) and deuterated poly(methyl methacrylate) (dPMMA) with two degrees of syndiotacticity were selected as a model partially miscible blend, as one of the most highly interacting systems known (defined by the temperature dependence of the blend’s interaction parameter). One-phase (equilibrium) and time-resolved, spinodal demixing experiments were analyzed by de Gennes’ random phase approximation (RPA) and Cahn–Hilliard–Cook (CHC) theory, respectively. The second derivative of the Gibbs free energy of mixing with respect to composition (G″ ≡ ∂2ΔGm/∂ϕ2) and corresponding χ parameter were obtained from both RPA and CHC analysis and found to correlate well across the phase boundary. We find that blends with higher PMMA syndiotacticity exhibit greater miscibility and a steeper G″ temperature dependence by ∼40%. The segment length of dPMMA with higher syndiotacticity was found to be a = 7.4 Å, slightly larger than 6.9 Å reported for lower syndiotacticity dPMMA. Consideration of thermal fluctuations is required for the self-consistent analysis of the nontrivial evolution of the spinodal peak position q* over time, corroborated by CHC model calculations. The temperature dependence of the mobility parameter, M, can be described by a “fast-mode” average of the diffusion coefficients of the blend constituents, except for quenches originating near the glass transition. A minimum demixing length scale of Λ ≈ 40 nm is obtained, in agreement with the theory for deeper quenches, but deviates at shallower quenches, whose origin we discuss. CHC correctly describes demixing length and time scales, except for quenches into the vicinity of the spinodal boundary. Our data demonstrate the significant effect of relatively minor polymer microstructure variations on polymer blend behavior across both sides of the phase boundary.

Aqueous mixtures of anionic and nonionic/cationic surfactants can form non-trivial self-assemblies in solution and exhibit macroscopic responses. Here, we investigate the micellar phase of pure and mixed aqueous solutions of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) and Dimethyldodecyl Amine Oxide (DDAO) using a combination of Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and rheological measurements. We examine the effect of temperature (0–60 °C), on the 20 wt% SDS micellar solutions with varying DDAO ( ⩽ 5 wt%), and seek to correlate micellar structure with zero-shear solution viscosity. SANS establishes the formation of prolate ellipsoidal micelles in aqueous solutions of pure SDS, DDAO and SDS/DDAO mixtures, whose axial ratio is found to increase upon cooling. Elongation of the ellipsoidal micelles of pure SDS is also induced by the introduction of the non-anionic DDAO, which effectively reduces the repulsive interactions between the anionic SDS head-groups. In FTIR measurements, the formation of elongated mixed ellipsoidal micelles is confirmed by the increase of ordering in the hydrocarbon chain tails and interaction between surfactant head-groups. We find that the zero-shear viscosity of the mixed surfactant solutions increases exponentially with decreasing temperature and increasing DDAO content. Significantly, a master curve for solution viscosity can be obtained in terms of micellar aspect ratio, subsuming the effects of both temperature and DDAO composition in the experimental range investigated. The intrinsic viscosity of mixed micellar solutions is significantly larger than the analytical and numerical predictions for Brownian suspensions of ellipsoidal colloids, highlighting the need to consider interactions of soft micelles under shear, especially at high concentrations.

Glyceryl monostearate (GMS) is a single-tailed lipidic monoglyceride commonly used as a nontoxic food additive. In this study, we have investigated GMS, specifically its self-assembling properties and subsequent application in drug delivery. Results from in silico modeling, corroborated by complementary small-angle neutron scattering, demonstrated vesicle formation; associated phase transitions were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry; dynamic light scattering revealed particle size alterations that occurred in the transition region. Spherical morphology of unilamellar vesicles was visualized using transmission electron microscopy imaging. Further, hydrophilic and hydrophobic drug loading in GMS vesicles and their amenability to surface modification for hepatic targeting have, in this study, been both predicted through molecular simulation study and demonstrated experimentally. The influence of hepatotropic ligands on the stability of drug-loaded GMS vesicles vis-a-vis cholesterol has also been investigated; the resulting GMS-based drug delivery vehicle, its properties enhanced through surface decoration, is envisaged to achieve targeted delivery of its payload to hepatocytes.

Spinodal decomposition of partially miscible polymer blends has the potential to generate well-defined polymeric nanostructured materials, with precise control of length scale and connectivity, and applications ranging from membranes and scaffolds to photovoltaics. In this review, we briefly summarize the theoretical basis for describing spinodal decomposition in binary polymer blends, and the parameters that determine the accessible demixing length scales and the timescales over which they develop. We then examine experimentally the validity of the classical Cahn-Hilliard (CH) theory prediction for the initial spinodal length scale, Λ ≡ 2 π / − G ″ / ( 4 k ) where G′′ is the second derivative of the free energy of mixing with respect to composition, and k is the ‘square gradient’ parameter, accounting for changes in free energy arising from concentration gradients. Benefitting from the perspective of over 40 years of neutron and light scattering data, and noting (remaining) misconceptions in the literature when analyzing phase separation, we examine a large collection of Λ measurements, and independent -G′′(T) and k experimental estimates. Overall, we find the CH prediction for Λ to be remarkably accurate for all blends and self-consistent conditions examined. We then summarize design considerations for generating polymeric materials via spinodal decomposition, bound by thermodynamics of available polymer systems, coarsening kinetics governed by rheology, as well as by engineering constraints. The fulfillment of the potential of this approach in the development of real functional materials demands, however, improved thermodynamic theories for polymer blends, able to quantitatively predict G′′(T) and k in terms of molecular structure and interactions.

Photocatalysts formed from a single organic semiconductor typically suffer from inefficient intrinsic charge generation, which leads to low photocatalytic activities. We demonstrate that incorporating a heterojunction between a donor polymer (PTB7-Th) and non-fullerene acceptor (EH-IDTBR) in organic nanoparticles (NPs) can result in hydrogen evolution photocatalysts with greatly enhanced photocatalytic activity. Control of the nanomorphology of these NPs was achieved by varying the stabilizing surfactant employed during NP fabrication, converting it from a core–shell structure to an intermixed donor/acceptor blend and increasing H2 evolution by an order of magnitude. The resulting photocatalysts display an unprecedentedly high H2 evolution rate of over 60,000 µmol h−1 g−1 under 350 to 800 nm illumination, and external quantum efficiencies over 6% in the region of maximum solar photon flux. Photocatalysts formed from a single organic semiconductor can suffer from inefficient charge generation leading to low photocatalytic activities. Incorporating a heterojunction between a donor polymer and non-fullerene acceptor in organic nanoparticles leads to enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

International audience; The saponin aescin, a mixture of triterpenoid saponins, is obtained from the seeds of the horse chestnut tree Aesculus hippocastanum. The beta-form employed in this study is haemolytically active. The haemolytic activity results from the ability of aescin to form strong complexes with cholesterol in the red blood cell membrane. In this study, we provide a structural analysis on the complex formation of aescin and cholesterol when embedded in a phospholipid model membrane formed by 1,2-dimyristoylsn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC). In this work, the temperatures investigated extend from DMPC's L-beta' to its L-alpha phase in dependence of different amounts of the saponin (0-6 mol% for calorimetric and 0-1 mol% for structural analyses) and the steroid (1-10 mol%). At these aescin contents model membranes are conserved in the form of small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs) and major overall structural modifications are avoided. Additionally, interactions between aescin and cholesterol can be studied for both phase states of the lipid, the gel and the fluid state. From calorimetric experiments by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), it could be shown that both, the steroid and the saponin content, have a significant impact on the cooperative phase transition behaviour of the DMPC molecules. In addition, it becomes clearly visible that the entire phase behaviour is dominated by phase separation which indeed also depends on the complexes formed between aescin and cholesterol. We show by various methods that the addition of cholesterol alters the impact of aescin on structural parameters ranging from the acyl chain correlation to vesicle-vesicle interactions. While the specific saponin-phospholipid interaction is reduced, addition of cholesterol leads to deformation of SUVs. The analyses of the structures formed were performed by wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS).

We introduce a new application of solid state NMR measurements towards characterizing the donor-acceptor interfaces within bulk heterojunction (BHJ) films. Rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) is used to measure dipolar couplings between C-13 nuclei on the acceptor phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) fullerene cage, which is approximate to 18% isotopically enriched with C-13, and beta hydrogens on the donor poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT) main chain, which are >95% isotopically enriched with H-2. The C-13 - H-2 dipolar couplings are used for constraining possible models of molecular packing in the amorphous mixed phase of a P3HT/PCBM BHJ. The films studied are highly mixed (>80%) and have a maximum length scale of composition nonuniformity of approximate to 6 nm in the mixed phase, as demonstrated by H-1 spin diffusion NMR and supported by TEM. The REDOR results show that despite the lack of phase separation at length scales greater than approximate to 6 nm, neat P3HT and PCBM clusters exist on approximate to 3 nm size scales, and, for the average PCBM molecule, the number of nearest neighbors P3HTs is two.

In this work small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to study hydration and temperature-induced changes of pig gastric mucin (PGM) within the entire concentration range. The scattering is interpreted as originating from PGM fiber-like structures that adopt rod-like bottle-brush conformation in dilute solutions. On the basis of the knowledge about molecular structure of mucins and SAXS data for dilute solutions, we propose a theoretical model for predicting mucin conformation in solution and calculate the corresponding scattering profile. This bottle-brush model comprises a protein backbone with carbohydrate side chains and corresponding structural parameters, such as grafting distance and lengths of the backbone and side chains. It describes the experimental PGM data from dilute solutions in the full q range very well. It furthermore suggests that the carbohydrate side chains are grafted with a regular separation of around 5 nm and a length of 14 nm. The cross-section size with a radius of about 1 nm is also in accordance with the size of the carbohydrate units. Structuring of PGM solutions at higher concentrations was investigated by analyzing semidilute and concentrated PGM samples. Starting at about 20 wt %, Bragg peaks become clearly visible indicating a more ordered mucin system. In very dehydrated and fully dry mucin samples these peaks are not present indicating lack of long-range order. The SAXS data show that the structural change occurring at about 80 wt % mucin and 25 degrees C corresponds to a glass transition in agreement with our previous calorimetric results. Temperature also has an effect on the phase behavior of mucin. At intermediate levels of hydration, a phase transition is observed at about 60-70 degrees C. The main Bragg peak appears to split in two, indicating formation of a different structure at elevated temperatures. These findings are used to improve the PGM water phase diagram.

International audience; We designed stable and highly reproducible hydrogels by external unidirectional diffusion of Fe2+ ions into aqueous solutions of polygalacturonate (polyGal) chains. The Fe2+ ions act as cross-linkers between the Gal units in such a way that both the molar ratio R ([Fe2+]/[Galunits]=0.25) and the mesh size of the polyGal network at the local scale (zeta=75 +/- 5 angstrom) have constant values within the whole gel, as respectively determined by titration and Small Angle Neutron Scattering. From macroscopic point of view, there is a progressive decrease of polyGal concentration from the part of the gel formed in the early stages of the gelation process, which is homogeneous, transparent and whose Young modulus has a high value of similar to 10(5) Pa, up to the part of the gel formed in the late stages, which is heterogeneous, highly turbid and has a much lower Young modulus of similar to 10(3) Pa. Since the local organization of the polyGal chains remains identical all along the hydrogels, this macroscopic concentration gradient originates from the formation of heterogeneities at a mesoscopic length scale during the gelation process. In addition, X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy measurements remarkably reveal that Fe2+ ions keep their +II oxidation state in the whole gels once they have cross-linked the Gal units. These polyGal hydrogels thus protect iron against oxidation and could be used for iron fortification.

Adaptive hydrogels, often termed smart materials, are macromolecules whose structure adjusts to external stimuli. Responsive micro- and nanogels are particularly interesting because the small length scale enables very fast response times. Chemical cross-links provide topological constraints and define the three-dimensional structure of the microgels, whereas their porous structure permits fast mass transfer, enabling very rapid structural adaption of the microgel to the environment. The change of microgel structure involves a unique transition from a flexible, swollen finite-size macromolecular network, characterized by a fuzzy surface, to a colloidal particle with homogeneous density and a sharp surface. In this contribution, we determine, for the first time, the structural evolution during the microgel-to-particle transition. Time-resolved small-angle x-ray scattering experiments and computer simulations unambiguously reveal a two-stage process: In a first, very fast process, collapsed clusters form at the periphery, leading to an intermediate, hollowish core-shell structure that slowly transforms to a globule. This structural evolution is independent of the type of stimulus and thus applies to instantaneous transitions as in a temperature jump or to slower stimuli that rely on the uptake of active molecules from and/or exchange with the environment. Soft microgel particles inherently possess qualities of both polymers as well as particles. We review the similarities and differences between soft microgel particles and stiff colloids at fluid–fluid interfaces. We compare two fundamental aspects of particle-laden interfaces namely the adsorption kinetics and the interactions between adsorbed particles. Although it is well established that the transport of both hard particles and microgels to the interface is driven by diffusion, the analysis of the adsorption kinetics needs reconsideration and a proper equation of state relating the surface pressure to the adsorbed mass should be used. We review the theoretical and experimental investigations into the interactions of particles at the interface. The rheology of the interfacial layers is intimately related to the interactions, and the differences between hard particles and microgels become pronounced. The assembly of particles into the layer is another distinguishing factor that separates hard particles from soft microgel particles. Microgels deform substantially upon adsorption and the stability of a microgel-stabilized emulsion depends on the conformational changes triggered by external stimuli.

International audience; As being part of replacement material for petroleum-based structures, nanocelluloses are being considered as construction units for nanoscale materials engineering. Compared with others, nanocellulose are non-spherical particles that have been deployed as emulsion stabilisers by taking advantage of their self-assembling ability at the oil–water interface, forming ultra-stable Pickering systems. To visualise the nanoparticles at the surface of the drops, emulsion polymerisation might be carried out by using a hydrophobic unpolymerised monomer as dispersed oil phase for CNC-stabilised oil–water emulsions. Efforts have dealt with stimuli-responsive cellulosic nanomaterials for sensing, detection and separation. This has been approached by covalent surface modification or adsorption of different biopolymers on the surface. It may involve impregnation of responsive particles into a cellulosic matrix to prepare, such as photo-switchable films. Among the various applications using surfactants, there are a number of challenges of choice for nanocelluloses in complex formulations involving smart template organisation and functionalities.

The coupling of droplet microfluidics and Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) is demonstrated with a range of model systems: isotopic solvent (H2O/D2O) mixtures, surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) solutions and colloidal (silica) suspensions. Several droplet carrier phases are evaluated and fluorinated oil emerges as a suitable fluid with minimal neutron background scattering (commensurate with air), and excellent interfacial properties. The combined effects of flow dispersion and compositional averaging caused by the neutron beam footprint are evaluated in both continuous and droplet flows and an operational window is established. Systematic droplet-SANS dilution measurements of colloidal silica suspensions enable unprecedented quantification of form and structure factors, osmotic compressibility, enhanced by constrained global data fits. Contrast variation measurements with over 100 data points are readily carried out in 10-20 min timescales, and validated for colloidal silica of two sizes, in both continuous and droplet flows. While droplet microfluidics is established as an attractive platform for SANS, the compositional averaging imposed by large (∼1 cm) beam footprints can, under certain circumstances, make single phase, continuous flow a preferable option for low scattering systems. We propose simple guidelines to assess the suitability of either approach based on well-defined system parameters.

A thorough knowledge on pore size distribution (PSD) is one of the fundamental requirements for characterization of shale gas reservoirs and for accurate estimation of their gas storage potential. However, being an important future source of energy need in India, the pore size distribution of Indian shale gas systems is not scientifically well understood. In the present study, the nanoscale pore size distributions of prospective Indian shale basins, viz., Cambay, Cauvery, Krishna Godavari (K-G), and Damodar valley (DV), were investigated using mercury injection porosimetry (MIP) and low-pressure gas adsorption (LP-N-2 and LP-CO2) techniques. The study focused on identifying the priority basins for shale gas production which can be substituted for sequestration of CO2 based on their PSDs. The samples exhibited higher thermal maturity with increasing organic content. The chemical composition of the shale samples was inferred from XRD data, which depicted higher clay content. The prominent clay minerals identified muscovite, illite, and kaolinite, which are generally flaky in nature. These minerals contributed significantly to the pore size complexity of the studied shale samples. The experimental result suggested that the samples exhibited diversified pore size characteristics. International audience; Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), electrospray ionization charge detection mass spectrometry (CD-MS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are used to characterize poly(glycerol monomethacrylate)(55)-poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate)(x) (G(55)-H-x) vesicles prepared by polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) using a reversible additionfragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) aqueous dispersion polymerization formulation. A G(55) chain transfer agent is utilized to prepare a series of G(55)-H-x diblock copolymers, where the mean degree of polymerization (DP) of the membrane-forming block (x) is varied from 200 to 2000. TEM confirms that vesicles with progressively thicker membranes are produced for x = 200-1000, while SAXS indicates a gradual reduction in mean aggregation number for higher x values, which is consistent with CD-MS studies. Both DLS and SAXS studies indicate minimal change in the overall vesicle diameter between x = 400 and 800. Fitting SAXS patterns to a vesicle model enables calculation of the membrane thickness, degree of hydration of the membrane, and the mean vesicle aggregation number. The membrane thickness increases at higher x values, hence the vesicle lumen must become smaller if the external vesicle dimensions remain constant. Geometric considerations indicate that this growth mechanism lowers the total vesicle interfacial area and hence reduces the free energy of the system. However, it also inevitably leads to gradual ingress of the encapsulated water molecules into the vesicle membrane, as confirmed by SAXS analysis. Ultimately, the highly plasticized membranes become insufficiently hydrophobic to stabilize the vesicle morphology when x exceeds 1000, thus this PISA growth mechanism ultimately leads to vesicle death

The structural behavior in aqueous mixtures of negatively charged silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) together with the cationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC), respectively, has been investigated using SANS and SAXS. From our SANS data analysis we are able to conclude that the surfactants self-assemble into micellar clusters surrounding the Ag NPs. We are able to quantify our results by means of fitting experimental SANS data with a model based on cluster formation of micelles with very good agreement. Based on our experimental results, we propose a novel mechanism for the stabilization of negatively charged Ag NPs in a solution of positively charged surfactants in which cluster formation of micelles in the vicinity of the particles prevents the particles from aggregating. Complementary SAXS and DLS measurements further support this novel way of explaining stabilization of small hydrophilic nanoparticles in surfactant-containing solutions.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are reported of model overbased detergent nanoparticles on a model water surface which mimic their behavior on a Langmuir trough or large water droplet in engine oil. The simulations predict that the structure of the nanoparticle on a water surface is different to when it is immersed in a bulk hydrophobic solvent. The surfactant tails are partly directed out of the water, while the carbonate core maximizes its extent of contact with the water. Umbrella sampling calculations of the potential of mean force between two particles showed that they are associated with varying degrees with a maximum binding free energy of ca. 10 kBT for the salicylate stabilized particle, ca. 8 kBT for a sulfurized alkyl phenate stabilized particle, and ca. 5 kBT for a sulfonate stabilized particle. The differences in the strength of attraction depend on the proximity of nearest approach and the energy penalty associated with the disruption of the hydration shell of water molecules around the calcium carbonate core when the two particles approach. This is greatest for the sulfonate particle, which partially loses the surfactant ions to the solution, and least for the salicylate, which forms the weakest water “cage”. The particles are separated by a water hydration layer, even at the point of closest approach.

We report a microfluidic approach to perform small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements of contrast variation and matching, extensively employed in soft and biological matter research. We integrate a low scattering background microfluidic mixer and serpentine channel in a SANS beamline to yield a single phase, continuous flow, reconfigurable liquid cell. By contrast with conventional, sequential measurements of discrete (typically 4-6) solutions of varying isotopic solvent composition, our approach continually varies solution composition during SANS acquisition. We experimentally and computationally determine the effects of flow dispersion and neutron beam overillumination of microchannels in terms of the composition resolution and precision. The approach is demonstrated with model systems: H2O/D2O mixtures, a surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), a triblock copolymer (pluronic F127), and silica nanoparticles (Ludox) in isotopic aqueous mixtures. The system is able to zoom into a composition window to refine contrast matching conditions, and robustly resolve solute structure and form factors by simultaneous fitting of scattering data with continuously varying contrast. We conclude by benchmarking our microflow-SANS with the discrete approach, in terms of volume required, composition resolution and (preparation and measurement) time required, proposing a leap forward in equilibrium, liquid solution phase mapping and contrast variation by SANS.

Fluorinated room temperature ionic liquids (FRTILs) represent a class of solvent media that are attracting great attention due to their IL-specific properties as well as features stemming from their fluorous nature. Medium-to-long fluorous tails constitute a well-defined apolar moiety in the otherwise polar environment. Similarly to the case of alkyl tails, such chains are expected to result in the formation of self-assembled fluorous domains. So far, however, no direct experimental observation has been made of the existence of such structural heterogeneities on the nm scale. We report here the first experimental evidence of the existence of mesoscopic spatial segregation of fluorinated domains, on the basis of highly complementary X-ray and neutron scattering data sets (highlighting the importance of the latter probe) and NMR spectroscopy. Data are interpreted using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, emphasizing the existence of a self-assembly mechanism that delivers segregated fluorous domains, where preferential solubilisation of fluorinated compounds can occur, thus paving the way for several smart applications.

We have used the Scheutjens–Fleer self-consistent field (SF-SCF) method to predict the self-assembly of triblock copolymers with a solvophilic middle block and sufficiently long solvophobic outer blocks. We model copolymers consisting of polyethylene oxide (PEO) as the solvophilic block and poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) or poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) as the solvophobic block. These copolymers form structurally quenched spherical micelles provided the solvophilic block is long enough. Predictions are calibrated on experimental data for micelles composed of PCL-PEO-PCL and PLGA-PEO-PLGA triblock copolymers prepared via the nanoprecipitation method. We establish effective interaction parameters that enable us to predict various micelle properties such as the hydrodynamic size, the aggregation number and the loading capacity of the micelles for hydrophobic species that are consistent with experimental findings.

Self-assembly due to phase separation within a miscibility gap is important in numerous material systems and applications. A system of particular interest is the binary alloy system Fe-Cr, since it is both a suitable model material and the base system for the stainless steel alloy category, suffering from low-temperature embrittlement due to phase separation. Structural characterization of the minute nano-scale concentration fluctuations during early phase separation has for a long time been considered a major challenge within material characterization. However, recent developments present new opportunities in this field. Here, we present an overview of the current capabilities and limitations of different techniques. A set of Fe-Cr alloys were investigated using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), atom probe tomography, and analytical transmission electron microscopy. The complementarity of the characterization techniques is clear, and combinatorial studies can provide complete quantitative structure information during phase separation in Fe-Cr alloys. Furthermore, we argue that SANS provides a unique in-situ access to the nanostructure, and that direct comparisons between SANS and phase-field modeling, solving the non-linear Cahn Hilliard equation with proper physical input, should be pursued.

Supramolecular polymer networks are three-dimensional structures of crosslinked macromolecules connected by transient, non-covalent bonds; they are a fascinating class of soft materials, exhibiting properties such as stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing, and shape-memory. This critical review summarizes the current state of the art in the physical–chemical characterization of supramolecular networks and relates this knowledge to that about classical, covalently jointed and crosslinked networks. We present a separate focus on the formation, the structure, the dynamics, and the mechanics of both permanent chemical and transient supramolecular networks. Particular emphasis is placed on features such as the formation and the effect of network inhomogeneities, the manifestation of the crosslink relaxation dynamics in the macroscopic sample behavior, and the applicability of concepts developed for classical polymer melts, solutions, and networks such as the reptation model and the principle of time–temperature superposition (263 references).

The current state of research in polymer/carbon nanotubes (single wall and multiwall) composites has been reviewed in context to various types of pre-treatments presently employed. The fundamental aspects of carbon nanotubes are briefly discussed and various strategies designed to alter the dispersion stability and quality of nanotubes in the composites is highlighted. A complete survey of the published data is provided and both the opportunities and the limitations in the frame of covalent and non-covalent type of pre-treatments of carbon nanotubes are juxtaposed. In this context, diverse proposed mechanisms behind different molecular level interactions between nanotubes and the functional moieties are addressed. The effects of these pre-treatments on electrical and rheological percolation thresholds are assessed as they provide an alternative means to evaluate the state of dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the composites. In this regard, the influence of various pre-treatments on the nature of charge transfer mechanisms, system dimensions etc. deduced from different parameters of classical percolation theories are also discussed. These transport parameters offer a vital clue on the nature of the pre-treatment and the effects it has on the structure–property correlations.

Pyrene fluorescence intensity and conductivity measurements were used to determine the cmc of two monomeric surfactants namely, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as well as two gemini surfactants, 16-3-16 2Br and 16-4-16 2Br of the alkanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(alkyldimethyl ammonium bromide) type. Cmc measurements were confirmed using fluorescence anisotropy measurements employing fluorescein as probe. Anisotropy-concentration plots showed sigmoidal behaviour and the obtained values for cmc were in good agreement with those determined using conductivity and pyrene fluorescence intensity. Also, the anisotropy of both fluorescein and another fluorescent probe. perylene, were used to provide information on the micellar structure. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

With the aim to gain insight into the possible applicability of protein-filled polyelectrolyte complex micelles under physiological salt conditions, we studied the behavior of these micelles as a function of salt concentration. The micelles form by electrostatically driven co-assembly from strong cationic block copolymers poly(2-methyl vinyl pyridinium) 41-block-poly(ethylene oxide) 205, weak anionic homopolymers poly(acrylic acid) 139, and negatively charged lipase molecules. The formation and disintegration of these micelles were studied with dynamic light scattering (DLS), by means of composition and salt titrations, respectively. The latter measurements revealed differences between disintegration of lipase-filled and normal polyelectrolyte complex micelles. These data, together with small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements provide indications that lipase is gradually released with increasing salt concentration. From the SANS data a linear relation between the intensity at q = 0 and the volume of the cores of the micelles at different salt concentrations was derived, indicating a loss of volume of the micelles due to the release of lipase molecules. It was estimated that beyond 0.12 M NaCl all lipase molecules are released.

Apparent and partial molar enthalpies at 298 K of the aqueous solutions of cationic gemini surfactants 1,1'-didodecyl-2,2'-dimethylenebispyridinium dimethanesulfonate (12-Py(2)-2-(2)Py-12 MS); 1,1'-didodecyl-2,2'-trimethylenebispyridinium dimethanesulfonate (12-Py(2)-3-(2)Py-12 MS); 1,1'-didodecyl-2,2'-tetramethylenebispyridinium dimethanesulfonate (12-Py(2)-4-(2)Py-12 MS); 1,1'-didodecyl-2,2'-octamethylenebispyridinium dimethanesulfonate (12-Py(2)-8-(2)Py-12 MS); 1,1'-didodecyl-2,2'-dodecamethylenebispyridinium dimethanesulfonate (12-Py(2)-12-(2)Py-12 MS) were measured as a function of concentration and are here reported for the first time. They show a very peculiar behavior as a function of the spacer length, not allowing for the determination of a -CH 2- group contribution when this group is added to the spacer. The curve of the compound with a four-carbon-atom-long spacer lies between those of the compound with a spacer of 2 and 3 carbon atoms, instead of that below the latter, as expected. This surprising behavior, never found before in the literature and different from that found for the more popular m- s- m-type bisquaternary ammonium gemini surfactants, could be explained by a conformation change of the molecule, caused by stacking interactions between the two pyridinium rings, mediated by the counterion and appearing at an optimum length of the spacer. The hypothesis is also supported by the data obtained from the surface tension vs log c curves, showing that A min, the minimum area taken at the air-water interface by the molecule, is significantly lower for 12-Py(2)-4-(2)Py-12 MS than that of the other compounds of the same homologous series, and that the same compound has a greater tendency to form micelles instead of adsorbing at the air/water interface. The evaluation of the micellization enthalpies, by means of a pseudophase transition model, agrees with the exposed trends. These results confirm the great crop of information that can be derived from the study of the solution thermodynamics of aggregate systems and in particular from the curves of apparent and molar enthalpies vs concentration.

The structural and relaxometric characterization of a novel class of supramolecular aggregates, as potential tumor-specific contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is reported. The aggregates are based on a new monomer with an upsilon shape (MonY) that contains, in the same molecule, all three fundamental tasks that are required: 1) a hydrophobic moiety that allows the formation of supramolecular aggregates; 2) the bioactive CCK8 peptide for target recognition; and 3) a chelating agent able to give stable gadolinium complexes. As indicated by dynamic light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements, MonY and its gadolinium complex MonY(Gd) aggregate in aqueous solution to give ellipsoidal micelles with a ratio between the micellar axes of approximately 1.7 and an aggregation number N(agg) of approximately 30. There are no differences in the aggregation behavior of MonY and MonY(Gd), which indicates that the presence of metal ions, and therefore the reduction of the net charge, does not influence the aggregation behavior. When MonY or MonY(Gd) are blended with dioleoyl phosphatidylcholine (DOPC), the aggregation behavior is dictated by the tendency of DOPC to give liposomes. Only when the amount of MonY or MonY(Gd) is higher than 20 % is the coexistence of liposomes and micelles observed. The thickness d of the bilayer is estimated by SANS to be approximately 35-40 A, whereas cryogenic transmission electron microscopy images show that the diameter of the liposomes ranges from approximately 50 to 150 nm. Self-assembling micelles of MonY(Gd) present high relaxivity values (r(1p)=15.03 mM(-1) s(-1)) for each gadolinium complex in the aggregate. Liposomes containing MonY(Gd) inserted in the DOPC bilayer at a molar ratio of 20:80 present slightly lower relaxivity values (r(1p)=12.7 mM(-1) s(-1)), independently of their internal or external position in the liposome.

A wide number of supra-molecular association modes are observed in mixtures containing water and bile salts, BS, (with, eventually, other components). Molecular or micellar solutions transform into hydrated solids, fibres, lyotropic liquid crystals and/or gels by raising the concentration, the temperature, adding electrolytes, surfactants, lipids and proteins. Amorphous or ordered phases may be formed accordingly. The forces responsible for this very rich polymorphism presumably arise from the unusual combination of electrostatic, hydrophobic and hydrogen-bond contributions to the system stability, with subsequent control of the supra-molecular organisation modes. The stabilising effect due to hydrogen bonds does not occur in almost all surfactants or lipids and is peculiar to bile acids and salts. Some supra-molecular organisation modes, supposed to be related to malfunctions and dis-metabolic diseases in vivo, are briefly reported and discussed.

Mixtures composed of water, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and a bolaform surfactant with two aza-crown ethers as polar headgroups (termed Bola C-16) were investigated by modulating the mole ratios between the components. The two surfactants have ionic and nonionic, but ionizable, headgroups, respectively. The ionization is due to the complexation of alkali ions by the aza-crown ether unit(s). Structural, thermodynamic, and transport properties of the above mixtures were investigated. Results from surface tension, translational self-diffusion, and small angle neutron scattering ( SANS) are reported and discussed. Interactions between the two surfactants to form mixed micelles result in a combination of electrostatic and hydrophobic contributions. These effects are reflected in the size and shape of the aggregates as well as in transport properties. The translational diffusion of the components in mixed micelles, in particular, depends on the Bola C-16/SDS mole ratio. Nonideality of mixing of the two components was inferred from the dependence of the critical micelle concentration, cmc, on the mole fraction of Bola C-16. This behavior is also reflected in surface adsorption and in the area per polar headgroup at the air-water interface. SANS data analysis for the pure components gives results in good agreement with previous findings. An analysis of data relative to mixed systems allows us to compute some structural parameters of the mixed aggregates. The dependence of aggregation numbers, nu(T), on the Bola C-16/SDS mole ratio displays a maximum that depends on the overall surfactant content and is rationalized in terms of the nonideality of mixing. Aggregates grow perpendicularly to the major rotation axis, as formerly observed in the Bola C-16 system, and become progressively ellipsoidal in shape.

The growth of protein crystals is preceded by an induction period during which the protein solution prepares itself for crystallization. We have measured the length of the induction period for lysozyme as a function of the temperature for a solution of 16.9 mg/mL at pH 4.5 with 5% NaCl as the precipitating agent. The results are described with classical nucleation theory. The number of molecules in the critical nucleus n* turns out to be quite small: n* = 3-9. Such a small aggregate can hardly be considered as crystalline, as is assumed in the classical theory. By taking into account the anisotropy of the interaction between lysozyme molecules, we show that small nuclei, with n

Conformations of weakly charged starburst polyelectrolytes in dilute solution are studied as a function of the number of generations g, the length of spacers n, and the degree of ionization ¿. Scaling analysis is combined with extensive numerical self-consistent-field (SCF) calculations performed on the basis of an extended Scheutjens¿Fleer (SF) algorithm. We demonstrate that the predictions of scaling analysis are applicable only for starburst polyelectrolytes with relatively small number of generations and sufficiently long spacers. We prove that irrespective of the strength/type of the intramolecular interactions the starburst macromolecules are characterized by a monotonic decay of the density profiles in the radial direction. In the case of a large number of generations a quasi-plateau in the monomer density profile is observed. This leveled-off distribution of density is due to strong fluctuations in the radial positions of branching points and end segments. In accordance with earlier Monte Carlo simulations results, we observe that the outer generations pull strongly on the spacers of inner generations.

The self-assembly of a series of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) surfactants into spherical micelles has been analyzed by a numerical self-consistent-field model. A united atom description is used in which three segment types are identified, that is, CH2, CH3, and O groups. The aqueous solution is modeled as water dimers. A thorough parameter study has been performed to investigate the influence of the six Flory-Huggins parameters on the micellization behavior. A thorough thermodynamic analysis leads to the identification of the critical micellization concentration, the critical micellization temperature (CMT), and the cloud point temperature (CPT). The temperature dependence of the system is linked to the variation of the Flory-Huggins parameter for the O-water interactions. With this temperature dependence, good agreement is found between experimental results and theoretical predictions for the CMT and CPT. Calculated results for the structural characteristics of different PEO-PPO-PEO aggregates, such as the aggregation number, the radial density distributions, the core radius, and the headgroup areas, are also discussed.

The pair distribution function g(r) for a ferrofluid modeled by a bidisperse system of dipolar hard spheres is calculated. The influence of an external uniform magnetic field and polydispersity on g(r) and the related structure factor is studied. The calculation is performed by diagrammatic expansion methods within the thermodynamic perturbation theory in terms of the particle number density and the interparticle dipole–dipole interaction strength. Analytical expressions are provided for the pair distribution function to within the first order in number density and the second order in dipole–dipole interaction strength. The constructed theory is compared with the results of computer (Monte Carlo) simulations to determine the range of its validity. The scattering structure factor is determined using the Fourier transform of the pair correlation func-tion g(r) – 1. The influence of the granulometric composition and magnetic field strength on the height and position of the first peak of the structure factor that is most amenable to an experimental study is analyzed. The data obtained can serve as a basis for interpreting the experimental small[1]angle neutron scattering results and determining the regularities in the behavior of the structure factor, its dependence on the fractional com-position of a ferrofluid, interparticle correlations, and external magnetic field. © Pleiades Publishing, Inc., 2014.

In this paper we report calculations of the concentration profile and the Gibbs free energy of the interface between a protein crystal and an aqueous solution, The calculations are based on a simple, realistic expression for the Gibbs free energy of the solution, which reproduces characteristic features of the protein-water phase diagram, such as the presence of a metastable liquid-liquid immiscibility region, An equation is derived which expresses the coefficient for the contribution of concentration gradients to the Gibbs free energy of the solution in terms of the interaction potential between the protein molecules, Calculations are presented which show that the presence of a metastable liquid-liquid immiscibility region in the phase diagram has a profound effect on the properties of the interface between a crystal and the solution, Near and below the critical temperature for metastable liquid-liquid phase separation the protein crystal is covered by a thin liquid film with a high protein concentration. This surface film causes a substantial lowering of the surface energy of the crystal. The effects of this film on the kinetic processes associated with the nucleation and the further growth of protein crystals are discussed.

The aggregation behavior of a series of alkyltrimethylammonium 5-ethylsalicylate surfactants (CnTA5ES, n = 12, 14, 16) in aqueous solution has been investigated employing turbidity measurements, fluorescence anisotropy experiments (using 3-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxylate, HNC-), and cryo transmission electron microscopy (cryo TEM). Critical aggregation concentrations (cac) were determined by surface tension experiments; they are smaller than those of their salicylate analogues. CnTA5ES surfactants form vesicles immediately above the cac rather than wormlike micelles such as their salicylate counterparts. C12TA5ES was found to form large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) which transformed into surfactant layers upon increasing surfactant concentration. The transition was characterized by an increase in turbidity. C14TA5ES and C16TA5ES were found to form LUVs and long wormlike vesicles which are assumed to be responsible for the viscoelasticity of the solutions. The ability to induce morphological transitions in water-in-oil (w/o) and water-in-CO2 (w/c) microemulsions stabilized by a trichain anionic surfactant 1,4-bis(neopentyloxy)-3-(neopentyloxycarbonyl)-1,4-dioxobutane-2- sulfonate (TC14) with simple hydrotrope additives has been investigated. High-pressure small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) has revealed the addition of a small mole fraction of hydrotrope can yield a significant elongation in the microemulsion water droplets. For w/o systems, the degree of droplet growth was shown to be dependent on the water content, the hydrotrope mole fraction, and chemical structure, whereas for w/c microemulsions a similar, but less significant, effect was seen. The expected CO2 viscosity increase from such systems has been calculated and compared to related literature using fluorocarbon chain surfactants. This represents the first report of hydrotrope-induced morphology changes in w/c microemulsions and is a significant step forward toward the formation of hydrocarbon worm-like micellar assemblies in this industrially relevant solvent.

The well-recognized advantageous properties of poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) and ionic liquids (ILs) in the context of an increasing demand for safe and efficient biotechnological processes has led to a growing interest in the study of their combinations for a wide range of procedures within the framework of green chemistry. Recently, one of the most promising and attractive applications has been the novel IL/polymer-based aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) for the extraction and purification of biomolecules. There still lacks, however, a comprehensive picture of the molecular phenomena that control the phase behavior of these systems. In order to further delve into the interactions that govern the mutual solubilities between ILs and PEGs and the formation of PEG/IL-based ABS, (1)H NMR spectroscopy in combination with classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations performed for binary mixtures of tetraethylene glycol (TEG) and 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium-chloride-based ILs and for the corresponding ternary TEG/IL/water solutions, at T = 298.15 K, were employed in this work. The results of the simulations show that the mutual solubilities of the ILs and TEG are mainly governed by the hydrogen bonds established between the chloride anion and the -OH group of the polymer in the binary systems. Additionally, the formation of IL/PEG-based ABS is shown to be controlled by a competition between water and chloride for the interactions with the hydroxyl group of TEG.

Variations in the length or proportion of side chains were shown to be responsible for affecting the surfactant phase behavior in water, resulting in the observation of a number of structures characterized by small angle X-ray scattering measurements, including a hierarchical micellar system and different liquid-crystalline phases. Additionally, although aqueous mixtures of stoichiometric complex salts usually phase separate, the presence of a sufficiently high weight fraction of ethylene oxide side chains can enhance the solubility of the complex salt aggregates in water over a wide range of concentration. Moreover, a dispersion of an isotropic concentrated solution of complex salts is formed at higher temperatures in a reversible process. In this paper we apply nonlocal kinetic coupling to the dynamic mean-field density functional method, which is derived from generalized time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory. The method is applied to the mesoscopic dynamics of copolymer melts, which was previously simulated using a local coupling approximation. We discuss the general theory of time evolution of density variables with general kinetic coefficients developed by Kawasaki and Sekimoto, and especially the limits of the theory that yield the local coupling approximation, the collective Rouse dynamics model, and the reptation dynamics model. We show bow a simple approximation to the Rouse dynamics model leads to a feasible numerical model that includes the essential physical features of nonlocal kinetic coupling. This results in a dynamic equation for the external potential instead of the density which allows us to perform calculations of microphase separation in copolymer melts with increased relevance to experimental results. As may be expected from a numerical model that includes nonlocal kinetic coupling, the numerical results show an increased computational efficiency, less defects in the final morphology, and a faster increase of the order parameter compared to local kinetic coupling. Recent work has suggested that weathering processes occurring in the subsurface produce the majority of silicate weathering products discharged to the world's oceans, thereby exerting a primary control on global temperature via the well-known positive feedback between silicate weathering and CO2. In addition, chemical and physical weathering processes deep within the critical zone create aquifers and control groundwater chemistry, watershed geometry and regolith formation rates. Despite this, most weathering studies are restricted to the shallow critical zone (e.g. soils, outcrops). Here we investigate the chemical weathering, fracturing and geomorphology of the deep critical zone in the Bisley watershed in the Luquillo Critical Zone Observatory, Puerto Rico, from two boreholes drilled to 37.2 and 27.0 m depth, from which continuous core samples were taken. Corestones exposed aboveground were also sampled. Weathered rinds developed on exposed corestones and along fracture surfaces on subsurface rocks slough off of exposed corestones once rinds attain a thickness up to similar to 1 cm, preventing the corestones from rounding due to diffusion limitation. Such corestones at the land surface are assumed to be what remains after exhumation of similar, fractured bedrock pieces that were observed in the drilled cores between thick layers of regolith. Some of these subsurface corestones are massive and others are highly fractured, whereas aboveground corestones are generally massive with little to no apparent fracturing. Subsurface corestones are larger and less fractured in the borehole drilled on a road where it crosses a ridge compared with the borehole drilled where the road crosses the stream channel. Both borehole profiles indicate that the weathering zone extends to well below the stream channel in this upland catchment; hence weathering depth is not controlled by the stream level within the catchment and not all of the water in the watershed is discharged to the stream.

Physical, chemical and hybrid tilapia fish gelatin hydrogels were investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), molecular dynamic simulations and their biological effect in cell cultures studied; results from the different experimental techniques were then correlated and linked to the rheological properties of the gels (F. Bode et al., Biomacromolecules, 2011, 12, 3741–3752). Hydrogels were obtained by cross-linking with the microbial enzyme transglutaminase (mTGase) under two conditions: above and below gelatin physical gelation temperature (ca. 23 °C). Hydrogels cross-linked at 37 °C, from the sol-state, are referred to as ‘chemical’ gels (C); hydrogels cross-linked at 21 °C, thus with concurrent physical gelation, are referred to as ‘physical-co-chemical’ gels (PC). The SANS data were appropriately described by a combination of a Lorentzian and a power law model. For physical gels, the correlation length (ξ) obtained from the fits decreased linearly with gelatin concentration, from 42 to 26 Å for 3.5 to 10% w/w gelatin, respectively. Independently of gelation temperature, all physical gels at a given concentration showed a similar correlation length ξ (26 ± 2 Å), with no significant difference with the sol-state (23 ± 2 Å). In both C and PC gels, ξ increased with mTGase concentration over the range studied: 40 to 167 Å for 10 and 40 U mTGase per g gelatin in C gels (after 120 min cross-linking) and 40 to 82 Å for 10 and 40 U mTGase per g gelatin for PC gels. ξ reached a plateau at the highest mTGase concentration studied for both types of gels. In addition, kinetic studies on C gels revealed that ξ increased linearly with time in the first two hours and grew faster with increasing mTGase concentration. ξ values in the PC gels were smaller than in the corresponding C gels. Cell proliferation studies showed that the gels were compatible with cell growth and indicated no statistically relevant dependence on mTGase concentration for C gels. For PC gels, cell proliferation decreased with increases in mTGase concentration, by approximately 80% from 10 to 40 U mTGase per g gelatin. With the exception of the highest mTGase concentration studied, PC gels overall showed a slightly (but statistically significant) higher cell proliferation than the corresponding chemical gels.

We study the macroscopic behavior of homopolymers and block copolymers at the interface of two different phases focusing on the random walk nature of the polymer chains. The macromolecules or parts of them can belong to either one of the phases and are described by a simple model of random walks according to which the chain parts can have different average sizes depending on the phase they belong. Though the exact description of polymer chains under additional potentials need non-ideal walks, the present effort can be considered as an initial study seeking the effects of the differentiation of the size of the chains in the two phases because of the different interactions. The way of settling of chains in the two phase system is determined by means of the connection of the weights of the macrostates of localized chains with the probability distributions of the positions of the chain units. Density profiles of both homopolymers and diblock copolymers along the direction perpendicular to the interface are well described and the study is extended to miktoarm star macromolecules made from different homopolymeric arms. International audience; Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) stabilized by nonionic polysorbate or block copolymer surfactants were used for the preparation of hierarchical meso-macroporous silica through a co-templated approach combining a cooperative templating mechanism (CTM) with micelles and spherical soft matter particles imprinting. Depending on the reaction conditions, the morphology of the final material can be tuned to capsules or to block matter. The size of the mesopores is strongly dependent on the nature of the surfactant in excess: 3 nm (Tween 20), 5 nm (Tween 40) or 9 nm (Pluronic (R) P123), whereas the size of the macropores depends only on the size of SLN (250 +/- 150 nm). The macroporous texture was clearly evidenced by TEM. The organization degree of the silica wall depends on the surfactant: only wormlike mesoporous capsules were obtained with Tween 20, and hexagonally ordered microdomains embedded in wormlike mesoporous silica capsules were obtained with Tween 40. Hexagonally ordered silica with circularly ordered mesoporosity could be achieved with Pluronic block copolymer P123. Combining mesoporous silica with solid lipid nanoparticles is a straightforward approach for the design of advanced formulations in drug delivery or food chemistry.
