The article examines how distrust regarding the COVID-19 pandemic has served as a catalyst for the diffusion of conspiracy theories. It discusses the nature of conspiracy theories, their relationship with institutional distrust, and their representation in the social media. The methodology used is based on the analysis of hashtags from over one million tweets to determine if certain theories act as "gateways" to others. The findings suggest that logical ties exist between distinct conspiracy theories, influenced by distrust towards specific institutions and amplified by the COVID-19 crisis. It is concluded that the combination of conspiracy theories is not random, but rather, it follows an internal logic that is based on distrust, since these theories are interconnected in an internally coherent way within the context of the pandemic. The U.S. National Parks encompass a variety of biophysical and historical resources important for national cultural heritage. Yet how these resources are socially constructed often depends on the beholder. Parks tend to be conceptualized according to their (fixed) geographic context, so our understanding of this system of systems is dominated by this geographic lens. To expose the systemic structure that exists beyond their geographic embedding, we analyze three representations of the National Park System using park–park similarity networks according to their cooccurrence in (1) about 423,000 news media articles; (2) about 11,000 research publications; and (3) about 60,000 species inhabiting parks. We quantify structural variation between network representations by leveraging similarity measures at different scales: park level (park–park correlations) and system level (network communities' consistency). Because parks are governed and experienced at multiple scales, cross-network comparison informs how management should account for the varying objectives and constraints that dominate at each scale. Our results identify an interesting paradox: Whereas park-level correlations depend strongly on the representative lens, the network communities are remarkably robust and consistent with the underlying geographic embedding. Our data-driven methodology is generalizable to other geographically embedded socioenvironmental systems and supports the holistic analysis of systems-level structure that might elude other approaches. - Abstract
This article analyses the relationship between poverty measures and the robustness of the Colombian electricity grid in the context of security. To do so, a dashboard was built that allowed triangulating the methodology of multidimensional poverty indices with network models. In conclusion, the electricity grid was highly fragile, as shown by the low number of nodes associated with the departments of Colombia. The robustness of the national grid is 0.0816, a low value compared to the typical values of non-optimized networks. An inverse relationship was also found between the homicide rate and poverty measures, including energy poverty. Likewise, a high correlation (0.94) was found between Colombia's multidimensional poverty and energy poverty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the use of social media by Uruguayan teachers, as well as the role of educational models on the Twitter/X platform. This is a mixed (quantitative-qualitative) study based on a survey of 206 teachers, a social media analysis of the Twitter/X platform, and in-depth interviews with nine leading educators identified on it. The results show that teachers use social media, in general, to find resources, learn from others and stay up to date with current developments in education. Leading educators, on the other hand, are particularly active on Twitter/X, where they share their opinions, thoughts and resources. They have training and professional experience in education and value the interaction, teaching and influence they generate on social networks. The paper also identifies some tips and warnings for using social media in an ethical, respectful and constructive manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite considerable improvements in social impact assessment practice, the shortfalls and neglected status of social impact assessment persist. Integrated impact assessments have been suggested to address some of these shortcomings. Due to its transdisciplinary nature, disaster risk assessment has been identified as an emerging area that could assist social impact assessment in managing social changes and risks and improving community resilience. Emerging research from South Africa and abroad have shown that social impact assessment–disaster risk assessment integration offers opportunities for streamlining and improved practice across four areas, that is, theoretical discourses, legislative and statutory provisions, practitioner perspectives and combined methodologies. The resulting streamlined social impact assessment and disaster risk assessment will be more suitable for 21st-century challenges, allowing for enriched social impact assessment practice, contributions to social sustainability and strengthening of the social resilience of at-risk communities. From observations of the South African context, we suggest that streamlined social impact assessment and disaster risk assessment will optimally address the challenges of developing sustainably and enhancing the resilience of at-risk societies in the 21st century in South Africa, the global south and also the rest of the world. FLOOD risk , *SOCIAL impact , *SOCIAL processes , *STRATEGIC planning , *RISK perception - Abstract
The mainstream approach of social vulnerability to flood risk faces some challenges regarding its ability to address the complexity of its causal processes. The objective of this study was to analyse the causal processes of social vulnerability to flood impacts from a relational perspective. To this end, a social network analysis was performed that identified the conditions and causes of social vulnerability and systematically articulated the relationships between them. This analysis was tested on the specific case of flood risk on the coast of the province of Alicante (SE Spain). To ascertain the conditions and causes of social vulnerability to flood risk, a multidisciplinary group of local experts was consulted, and the resulting data processed in a relational way using Atlas.ti and Gephi softwares. The result was a social vulnerability network comprising 84 nodes and 189 edges distributed into four dimensions: the adaptive capacity of tourists, socio-economic structure, land use planning and risk management. The information was ranked for betweenness centrality, revealing the components with highest causal power of social vulnerability to social impacts in flooding events: low flood risk awareness, economic growth based on real estate boom, property speculation and lack of political interest in flood risk management. This proposal places emphasis on the driving forces of social vulnerability and not exclusively on the specific adaptive conditions of the population, which allows a strategic identification and management of generative forces that ultimately induce the social impacts of floods. Background: Comorbidity between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) is surrounded by diagnostic controversy and although various effective treatments exist, dropout and nonresponse are high. Objective: By estimating the network structure of comorbid PTSD and BPD symptoms, the current study illustrates how the network perspective offers tools to tackle these challenges.Method: The sample comprised of 154 patients with a PTSD diagnosis and BPD symptoms, assessed by clinician-administered interviews. A regularised partial correlation network was estimated using the GLASSO algorithm in R. Central symptoms and bridge symptoms were identified. The reliability and accuracy of network parameters were determined through bootstrapping analyses. Results: PTSD and BPD symptoms largely clustered into separate communities. Intrusive memories, physiological cue reactivity and loss of interest were the most central symptoms, whereas amnesia and suicidal behaviour were least central. Conclusions: Present findings suggest that PTSD and BPD are two distinct, albeit weakly connected disorders. Treatment of the most central symptoms could lead to an overall deactivation of the network, while isolated symptoms would need more specific attention during therapy. Further experimental, longitudinal research is needed to confirm these hypotheses.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03833453.

CLIMATE change adaptation , *HABITATS , *MIGRATORY birds , *LAND cover , *WATERSHEDS - Abstract
The potential for species to shift their ranges to avoid extinction is contingent on the future availability and accessibility of habitats with analogous climates. To develop conservation strategies, many previous researchers used a single method that considered individual factors; a few combined 2 factors. Primarily, these studies focused on identifying climate refugia or climatically connected and spatially fixed areas, ignoring the range shifting process of animals. We quantified future habitat availability (based on species occurrence, climate data, land cover, and elevation) and accessibility (based on climate velocity) under climate change (4 scenarios) of migratory birds across the Yangtze River basin (YRB). Then, we assessed species' range‐shift potential and identified conservation priority areas for migratory birds in the 2050s with a network analysis. Our results suggested that medium (i.e., 5–10 km/year) and high (i.e., ≥ 10 km/year) climate velocity would threaten 18.65% and 8.37% of stable habitat, respectively. Even with low (i.e., 0–5 km/year) climate velocity, 50.15% of climate‐velocity‐identified destinations were less available than their source habitats. Based on our integration of habitat availability and accessibility, we identified a few areas of critical importance for conservation, mainly in Sichuan and the middle to lower reaches of the YRB. Overall, we identified the differences between habitat availability and accessibility in capturing biological responses to climate change. More importantly, we accounted for the dynamic process of species' range shifts, which must be considered to identify conservation priority areas. Our method informs forecasting of climate‐driven distribution shifts and conservation priorities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to investigate the association between the media and the public network agendas concerning Syrian refugees in Türkiye, as an exemplar of a polarized media system within the context of a competitive authoritarian regime to gain insight into the cognitive effects of media in such a context internationally. Large-scale media and nationally representative mind-mapping survey data analysis show that the media's network agenda is only significantly transferred to the pro-government individuals, while no significant effect was found on pro-opposition individuals from any media outlet regardless of their political stances. Implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this piece of research is to study productivity and scientific collaboration in the main Spanish sociology journals from a gender perspective. The authorship of 3171 documents published in these journals during the period 2001-2020 was analysed using bibliometric and social network analysis techniques. While there was an overwhelming male dominance at the start of the period, the results show a steady trend towards parity; however, this was only achieved during the 2016-2020 period, and not in all indicators. In conclusion, gender advances in sociology research have only partially come to fruition in Spain, but the scholarly monitoring system cannot be held accountable for this. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the 1991 Constitution of Colombia, many elements of the electoral dynamics have been changing in this country. One of them, perhaps the most important one, is the significance that electoral alliances have taken for local and regional elections. With an analysis of the 2015 and 2019 elections, this article describes how inter-party alliances are formed in these two cases. For this purpose, a network analysis is used to establish which alliances have taken place, the number of them, the stakeholders involved, among other elements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and objective: The current study aimed to investigate the within-day symptom dynamics in PTSD patients, specifically focusing on symptoms that most predict changes in other symptoms. The study included a baseline diagnostic assessment, followed by an assessment using the experience sampling method (ESM) via a smartphone. Method: Participants answered questions related to their PTSD symptoms four times per day for 15 consecutive days (compliance rate 75%). The clinical sample consisted of 48 treatmentseeking individuals: 44 with PTSD as a primary diagnosis, and four patients with subsyndromal PTSD, all of whom had not yet begun trauma-focused treatment. The ESM assessment included the 20 items from the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5, five items from the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) assessing disturbances in relationships and functional impairment, and two items from the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 assessing symptoms of depersonalization and derealization. Results: Temporal networks (prospective associations between symptoms) showed that changes in hypervigilance predicted changes in the greatest number of symptoms at the next time point. Furthermore, hypervigilance showed temporal connections with at least one additional symptom from each of the DSM-5 PTSD symptom clusters. Conclusions: Results show that the contemporaneous network (representing the relationship between given symptoms within the same assessment occasion) and the temporal network (representing prospective associations between symptoms) differ and that it is important to estimate both. Some findings from earlier research are replicated, but heterogeneity across studies remains. Future studies should include potential moderators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Work stress has been identified as a critical factor affecting mental health in police officers. Psychosocial factors increase the impact of work stress on police officers and, in the long run, contribute to the onset of burnout symptoms. In this research a sample of 323 was studied to study the relationship between psychosocial risk factors and the probability of suffering burnout symptoms. The participant’s answers to the MBI-GS and F-PSICO (version 4.0) were analysed by using network analysis. The results show that psychosocial risk factors are strongly associated in network models when higher level of cynicism and emotional exhaustion are observed. Additionally, higher levels of burnout in police officers were observed when lower autonomy, higher psychological demands, role ambiguities and a lower perceived social support were present. Results are discussed considering its theoretical and applied relevance to design healthier work environments and efficient psychological interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Social, political, and economic institutions covary with one another in heterogenous ways across space and time. Social Network Analysis (SNA) offers a set of analytical tools and conceptual frameworks that have allowed for formal comparisons of interactions, affiliations, and relationships in reconstructing historical trajectories of institutional change. Although archaeologists have made full use of a range of metrics that describe the structural variation of social networks, formal approaches to analyzing the covariance of networks, and the institutions that structured networks in the past, remain undertheorized. In most cases, descriptive metrics are compared between networks built from different datasets or networks separated in time. Using quadratic assignment procedure (QAP) correlations to compare matrices of archaeological data, I draw on a ceramic dataset of approximately 350,000 sherds from the Southern Appalachian region to investigate how decisions related to manufacture choice and to stylistic design covaried with one another between roughly AD 800 and 1650. I explore how material attributes may or may not vary independently of one another and what that means for our analyses of the institutions they reflect. The results contribute to broader comparative analyses of institutional change and perennial discussions of social evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To analyze the structure of social, technical, and commercial relationships established between coconut producers of the Pacific coast of the Cauca Department in Colombia. Methodology: The Social Network Analysis methodology was used. This methodology studies the structure and dynamics of the relationships established among actors. A survey was applied to 676 producers, and the information was analyzed based on the indicators of density, centralization, in-degree centrality and Modularity Class. Results: The indicator of density is low in all analyzed networks, which means incipient levels of social capital and cohesion. The resulting networks are decentralized, which means that there are several actors that are an important source of consultation. The clusters are configured based on geographic conditions and around recognized actors given their trajectory and experience. Limitations: Lack of evidence to support the relationship between social capital and development, lack of information and high degree of abstraction. Conclusions: Low levels of social capital around the activity were found, which result in information associated with the coconut production chain not flowing easily between actors and communities. Geographic conditions fragment existing relationships between producers, forming different clusters that hardly communicate with each other. The relevant actors identified are producers with extensive experience in the activity, collectors, and cooperatives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several studies have indicated a type of hierarchical capitalism in Latin America, characterized by the presence of multinational and state corporations, diversified multi-enterprise groups, low-skilled labor, and segmented labor markets. From the perspective of ownership networks, we explore who the owners of large Brazilian corporations are. These networks reveal actors and groups with prominent positions in the structure and ownership of companies. Thus, this article proposes to 1) describe the ownership network of the largest Brazilian corporations; 2) analyze the density, average degree, modularity, and the number of components connected in this network; 3) analyze measures of weighted degree centrality, intermediation, and eigenvector; 4) identify and analyze subgroups in the network, and 5) relate the configuration of the ownership network with hierarchical capitalism in the Brazilian context. The results point to prominent positions of financial shareholders, the Brazilian state (state-owned firms), and groups composed mostly of large multinationals, financial firms, families, and state-owned firms, confirming that the ownership structure is strongly linked to these players.
