The article proposes a radical distinction in understanding human aggression and violence. It will seek to comprehend aggression as an inextricable and also valuable part of life. At the same time, it must be shown that human violence has nothing to do with a vital necessity but is a policy based on the assumption and imposition of a hierarchical conception of existence, from which domination and delegitimization relationships are built, devaluing the "subalterns". This perspective will be imposed by force to later be rationalized, normalized, and legitimized to the extent that in many situations violence ceases to be consciously perceived as such. Those who hold power arrogate to themselves the right to define what is to be considered violent and what will not be, imposing on the victims a double submission through the pedagogy of cruelty.

Background: Research has shown that potential perpetrators and individuals high in psychopathic traits tend to body language cues to target a potential new victim. However, whether targeting occurs also by tending to vocal cues has not been examined. Thus, the role of voice in interpersonal violence merits investigation. Objective: In two studies, we examined whether perpetrators could differentiate female speakers with and without sexual and physical assault histories (presented as rating the degree of ‘vulnerability’ to victimization). Methods: Two samples of male listeners (sample one N = 105, sample two, N = 109) participated. Each sample rated 18 voices (9 survivors and 9 controls). Listener sample one heard spontaneous speech, and listener sample two heard the second sentence of a standardized passage. Listeners’ self-reported psychopathic traits and history of previous perpetration were measured. Results: Across both samples, history of perpetration (but not psychopathy) predicted accuracy in distinguishing survivors of assault. Conclusions: These findings highlight the potential role of voice in prevention and intervention. Gaining a further understanding of what voice cues are associated with accuracy in discerning survivors can also help us understand whether or not specialized voice training could have a role in self-defense practices.

In this article, we examine the concept of borderline personality organization as it was conceptualized by Otto F. Kernberg. We highlight the diagnostic criteria so that it is possible to recognize a borderline organization, namely primitive defensive mechanisms associated with an examination of reality generally uncompromised. We point out that, for Kernberg, dysfunctional management of the primitive feelings of anger would prevent the psychic integration, in early childhood of the borderline subject, of the 'good' and 'bad' dyads in which Self and object are related. The patient, growing up, would then discover herself as dominated by tearing and opposing experiential and affective 'states'. Kernberg describes borderline personality organization as a pathological condition of internalized object relations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PRECOCIOUS puberty , *INTIMATE partner violence , *CRIME victims , *BAYESIAN analysis , *SEX crimes , *LATENT variables - Abstract
Background: A significant body of literature has identified multiple factors that contribute to established victimization by aggressive and/or intimidating behaviours. These studies primarily originate from the fields of intimate partner violence (IPV), bullying, sexual abuse, and/or commercial sexual exploitation (CSE), and generally focus on female victims. It appears, however, complicated to quantify the cumulative contribution of these factors on susceptibility to intimidating and/or hostile engagements on an individual level. Objective: To develop a comprehensive risk model to quantify, on an individual level, the cumulative effects of previously reported characteristics on susceptibility to aggressive/intimidating approaches, leading to victimization (e.g. in the context of IPV/sexual abuse). Methods: A Bayesian belief network was developed using data from previous studies, capturing the multivariate contribution of previously reported characteristics on the likelihood of becoming victimized by aggressive and/or intimidating approaches (e.g. in the IPV/CSE context) in female victims aged 12–24 years. Results: The model showed that specific combinations of characteristics may contribute to an increased likelihood of victimization (e.g. in the context of IPV/bullying/sexual abuse or CSE). This likelihood could be quantified and categorized into specific clusters of factors differentiating between victimization by physically violent, non-physical, and/or sexual aggressive/intimidating approaches. Conclusion: The present model appears to be the first to successfully quantify the cumulative contribution of individual characteristics on the likelihood of becoming victimized by aggressive and/or intimidating approaches, typically leading to victimization. Moreover, the present scientific effort and resulting model suggest that there may be a latent variable mediating between the implemented factors and overall outcome, i.e. the susceptibility to aggressive and/or intimidating approaches. From that perspective, the model may also be considered as an initial outline to effectively indicate susceptibility to such approaches. This study constructed a Bayesian belief network of published statistics to quantify the cumulative effects of individual characteristics on victimization (e.g. in the context of IPV/sexual abuse/bullying/CSE). The model showed that the likelihood of victimization following aggressive and/or intimidating approaches could be quantified and categorized into three different features: the likelihood of becoming victimized by physically violent, non-physical, and/or sexual aggressive/intimidating approaches. The likelihood of becoming victimized by physically violent and non-physical aggressive/intimidating approaches seems to be predominantly characterized by risk factors such as depressive symptoms and elevated neuroticism. The likelihood of victimization by sexual intimidating approaches seems to be primarily associated with externalizing risk factors (e.g. impulsivity), strengthened by factors related to previous (negative) sexual experiences and early-onset puberty. This model could be considered as an initial outline to effectively indicate susceptibility to aggressive/intimidating approaches. The model may therefore be considered an applicable framework for future research to further unravel the complicated aggressive and/or intimidating victim–perpetrator interactions related to victimization. Bullying and cyberbullying are risky behaviours which normally occur during adolescence. Although an important relationship has been recognized between the two phenomena, issues related to their prevalence, the similarity and difference between them, the transfer of roles, as well as the emotional, social, and moral aspects associated with them, remain unresolved. The aim of this study was to explore the roles of involvement in bullying and cyberbullying through an analysis of latent classes, and examine their association with moral disengagement, social and normative adjustment, and anger rumination. The study had a two-stage longitudinal design, with 3,006 secondary school students (Mage = 13.53; 51.9% girls), using extensively validated self-reports in the reference population. The results showed four latent classes: uninvolved, victim-cybervictim, bully-victim and wholly involved. Logistic regression analyses identified a low social adjustment in those wholly involved, low normative adjustment and high moral disengagement in mixed profiles, and high anger rumination in all involvement profiles, mainly in bully-victim. These results are discussed in terms of their value in understanding the distinctions between bullying and cyberbullying, the existence of pure and mixed roles, and the associated emotional, social, and moral variables.

Parental hostility can generate in children the formation of thinking and action styles that put them at risk of developing socially maladaptive behaviors. An ex post facto quantitative descriptive-correlational study was carried out to analyze aggressive behaviors in Colombian juvenile delinquents and their relationships with the same behaviors in their fathers and mothers. A total of 115 male juveniles (with their mothers and fathers) who were in pretrial detention for different offenses participated. Five self-reports were applied to measure different forms of aggressiveness in the youths, their mothers and fathers. Except for hostility, the youths had higher scores than their mothers and/or fathers in all other forms of aggression. Regarding appetitive aggression, youths and their fathers had higher scores than their mothers. Multiple correlations were found between the different forms of aggression of youths, mothers and fathers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present work has as its starting point the rejection that D.W. Winnicott expresses in different parts of his work to the death drive. The objective is to map aspects of the concept the author disagrees with, as well as to explain the proposed alternatives. From the outset we identify a fundamental dissociation between the idea that there is a constitutional aggressiveness to the subject and the conception that such aggressiveness is imbued with an equally constitutional hatred. We also found a notion of trauma that largely dispenses with the drive aspect in favor of valuing the role of the environment, as it is the environment that fails the subject, especially in the early days of life. Finally, the return to the Freudian inorganic gives way to curative regression in the psychoanalytic setting. Underlying all these ideas is a fundamental horizon in ethical, theoretical and clinical terms: creative living. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AGGRESSION (Psychology) , *INTERPERSONAL relations , *PROSOCIAL behavior , *KINDERGARTEN facilities , *SOCIAL adjustment , *PUBLIC schools , *CONFIRMATORY factor analysis - Abstract
Recognizing aggressive behavior at an early age is vital to identify problematic trajectories that may increase the risk of behavioral and social adaptation problems at school and during adolescence. This requires scales capable of measuring this behavior. In this study, the Scale of Preschool Social Behavior (psbs) - Teacher Form was validated using a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (cfa) in a national context. We used a sample of 538 children and 12 educators from 4 kindergartens and 5 public schools in Santiago, Chile. The results revealed two main factors: aggression and pro-social behavior, similar to the original scale. This study contributes to the early detection of physical and relational aggression in the preschool stage through the development of reliable measurements that guide prevention programs. EXECUTIVE function , *IMPLICIT attitudes , *SOCIAL influence , *RESOURCE allocation , *SOCIAL factors - Abstract
Interpreting situations with a biased view as potentially hostile can facilitate aggression. Research suggests that biased interpretations occur automatically and implicitly. This study aims to determine whether executive function training reduces implicit hostile attributions. Executive functions describe processes associated with control, planning, and allocation of attentional resources to perform goaldirected actions. A sample of ninety-eight college students was randomly assigned to two groups exposed to modified versions of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to assess levels of automatic hostile attributions. The experimental group underwent Stroop Task training, while the control group was exposed to a neutral task. Although the results did not confirm the working hypothesis, they demonstrate that the IAT can be effectively adapted to measure implicit aggressive attitudes. Overall, this methodology can contribute to elucidating the influence of social factors versus cognitive factors in the generation of violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The school population represents a fundamental group for health promotion actions, given that the foundations of healthy behaviors in adult life are established in children and adolescents, who can be greatly influenced by the school. Objective: To describe the health-related behavioral factors of schoolchildren between 13 and 17 years of age in secondary and middle school in Colombia. Methods: A national cross-sectional study was conducted (i.e., School Health Survey -ENSE-) that recorded information on dietary practices, physical activity, alcohol and drug consumption, injuries and bullying, and oral, visual and hearing health. Sampling was probabilistic, cluster and multistage. Results: Schoolchildren have low consumption of fruits, vegetables (13.1%) and dairy (76.5 %), high consumption of ultra-processed foods (82.4 %), sugary drinks (74.0 %) and fast foods (14.8 %), frequent addition of salt at the table (43.3 %), low compliance with physical activity recommendations (15.0 %) and high sedentary lifestyle (46.3 %), frequent consumption of alcohol (44.7 %) and psychoactive substances (14.7 %), in addition to prevalent situations of bullying (15.4 %), rejection (8.2 %) and verbal aggression (42.7 %).Conclusions: The ENSE shows critical inequalities by gender, ethnicity and social class, throughout the country. The indicators observed in schoolchildren are precursors of various chronic and degenerative diseases and mental illness, which requires the urgent attention of the different social actors in the country [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIFFERENTIATION (Developmental psychology) , *HUMAN behavior , *COLLEGE students , *SCHOOL bullying , *SELF regulation , *AUTONOMY (Psychology) , *EMOTION regulation , *EMOTIONAL competence , *AGGRESSION (Psychology) , *INTERPERSONAL relations , *BULLYING - Abstract
The socio-emotional well-being of children and adolescents is a subject of interest, both for academics and researchers, as well as for parents, teachers, and educators. Initiatives on this subject promoted from the scientific and social fields are constantly increasing, and tend to have multiple objectives, among which one is to understand the dynamics of violence and aggression (which can lead to harassment situations), in order to design more effective prevention and intervention programs. Research suggests that emotional aspects are relevant to the prevention of aggression. Within this realm, we have focused on Differentiation of self (DoS). The Differentiation of Self is the central construct of Bowen's (1978) systemic family theory, considered from the systemic perspective as one of the most comprehensive theories of human behavior. With multiple applications in various fields, DoS is a multidimensional construct, defined as the ability to balance emotional and intellectual functioning -intrapsychic dimension-, and intimacy and autonomy in personal relationships -interpersonal dimension-. Based on previous studies in which associations between bullying and socio-emotional competencies were found, the objective of this study was to find relationships between differentiation of self and peer aggression. The sample of this study was comprised of university students between 17 and 20 years old (N = 365; M = 18.3, SD = .7), who were studying the first or second year of different careers at a private university in Argentina. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires on lifestyles (Carlos et al., 2016) and the Spanish version of the Differ- entiation of Self Inventory-Revised (S-DSI; Rodríguez-González et al., 2015). Consid- ering that peer aggression does not represent bullying in all cases, the association between self-differentiation and peer aggression was first analyzed and, second, this same associ- ation was analyzed, but considering frequent aggression. Peer aggression was perpetrated by 54 % of women and 63 % of men (p = .043) and suffered by 72 % of women and 61 % of men (p = .124). Frequent peer aggression was perpetrated by 15 % of women and 21 % of men (p = .001) and suffered by 41 % of women and 24 % of men (p = .146). Both measures of DoS (Emotional reac- tivity and Emotional cutoff) were associated with a lower prevalence of both aggression and frequent aggression. This work offers two main findings. First, given the high incidence of peer aggression, the results of this study confirm the relevance of the research on peer aggression and, specifically, on frequent aggression associated with bullying. Second, present data suggests the existence of a relationship between differentiation of self and aggression. Since the idea and perceptions about aggression could be changing, new research is suggested, based around the cultural context and social changes that identify how the concept of bullying evolves should be promoted. Moreover, it would be positive to develop new research that can delve into the role played by the differentiation of self, since it is a factor that impacts the development and health of adolescents. The significant relationship between peer aggression and DoS found in this study contributes to the empirical corpus that affirms the relevance of the emotional factor in aggressive and bullying behaviors. In this sense, this study joins others that support the idea of intervening in aggression and buylling through the development of school intervention programs aimed at developing emotional competencies, involving students and also parents and educators. PSYCHONEUROENDOCRINOLOGY , *COVID-19 pandemic , *SOCIAL isolation , *ANXIETY , *DOMESTIC violence - Abstract
The pandemic caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus in the years 2020-2022 altered the emotional behavior of humans. The restrictive feeling caused by the isolation and the change of life habits that demanded a social separation promoted anxiety, distress, apathy, domestic violence, educational problems, and economic instability, among other aspects. Erroneous statistics, and social media information about the number of people infected by the coronavirus SARS-COV-2, aggravated human anxiety and depression. This review compares the main psychological effects caused by pandemic isolation compared to other isolated social contexts. We studied the primary central nervous system areas involved in human reactive aggressiveness behavior. We examine this behavior in relationship with catecholamines and hormones during social isolation. We do not measure or analyze any hormone in our laboratory and only describe the circuits involved in the neuroendocrine response to the aggressive behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prevalence of school injuries and bullying is estimated in a sample of schoolchildren from the Eje Cafetero. For this, it was carried out a transversal study with a descriptive analysis, in which it developed a secondary analysis of the National School Health Survey - ENSE 2017. Participated 4,353 adolescents from the Cafetera Region between 12 and 17 years old, of which 51.8% are women and 47.8% men, school level from seven to eleven. The results show that 24.8% of the schoolchildren surveyed reported serious injuries and 14.2% indicated that they were bullied in the last month. 23.5% affirm that they participated in a physical fight, and 17% that they had been victims at least once. 37.9% have been verbally assaulted and 6.6% have been rejected, in the last 30 days. It is concluded that there are multiple risk factors to consider school bullying as a public health problem and it is important to increase funding and the involvement of suitable professionals that promote well-being and mental health in school contexts by development programs. RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *SOCIAL services , *RENEWABLE energy sources , *FOOD security , *PARADOX - Abstract
The central thesis of this commentary focuses on the paradox of two wars occurring in parallel with Russian aggression in Ukraine. It is not just that—in addition to military action—there is a geopolitical tsunami and its consequences in the form of a possible food crisis, mass migration, or an already open energy war. The paradox relates to the fact that a potential Ukrainian victory could have adverse effects on the welfare of European countries as a consequence of the embargo on Russian hydrocarbons and the need to replace them (assuming there is no return to the ancien régime before the Russian aggression of February 24, 2022). The defeat of the Ukrainians, on the other hand, could lead to a so-called "new opening" and a gradual return to the import of Russian energy resources (which, although they will not obtain the pre-war volume, will provide energy stability for Europe in a period of diversifying contracts and developing investments in renewable energy sources). EVERYDAY life - Abstract
The aim of this article is to explore phenomenologically how the 'inside' (psychical) and 'outside' (the other and/or society) interweave since it appears that sometimes those of us who favour diversity may also inadvertently shut it down. Phenomenology appears to open more easily onto what we don't want to know about in our everyday lives, or a turning away which impedes diversity. If we cannot hear our own thoughts that come to us from the 'inside', then how can we move towards diversity on the 'outside'. The tensions between turning away and turning towards leads into a Freudian look at conscience and aggression, and Lacan's idea of the ego being the seat of identification and misrecognition. Freud's observation of an 'original' aggression towards the other appears especially important. It is argued that this aggression always fragments the movement towards diversity. Two factors appear to mediate this movement, namely a 'negative' exclusion, and a 'positive' ameliorative 'law'. Two fictional accounts are given from everyday life reflecting societal and psychical aggression, including its 'privacy' or sensual meanings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: to understand the feelings experienced by elderly people in situations of violence. Method: an exploratory study with a qualitative approach, conducted from interviews with 15 elderly people who reported violence in the Women's Police Station, in a city in the interior of São Paulo, between January and December 2018. The data were analyzed and interpreted using the content analysis technique. Results: the study revealed that violence against the elderly perpetrated by family members or caregivers is a reality. However, the elderly face difficulties in admitting what happened due to affective or blood ties. The feelings experienced by them after the violence include sadness, disappointment, anger, injustice, anguish and revolt. Final Considerations: the occurrence of violence practiced by the family member or caregiver was noticed. Nevertheless, there was difficulty on the part of the victim in admitting what had happened. There is a need for sensitive and effective approaches, including awareness raising, training of professionals and implementing protective policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EMPATHY , *SOCIAL skills , *PSYCHOMETRICS , *FORGIVENESS , *AGGRESSION (Psychology) - Abstract
Introduction: The aim of this study was to identify the variables that best predict measures of aggression, empathy, and forgiveness, as well as the main differences in vulnerable, hostile and safe contexts, in a sample of children and adolescents belonging to a vulnerable population. Method: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted with a non-probabilistic incidental sample of 85 participants. Psychometric measures of empathy, aggression, and forgiveness were used. The participants were invited to a victim assistance foundation for an interview and test application. Results: Statistically significant effects were found among the variables in the verified model, where empathy predicts aggression in the hostile context, but not in the vulnerable and safe context. In turn, empathy predicts forgiveness in the vulnerable and safe contexts, and aggression predicts forgiveness in the hostile model, but its effect in the vulnerable and safe context is not significant. Furthermore, empathy plays a key role in understanding forgiveness, given that it is associated with aggressive behaviors in the hostile contexts, whereas a forgiveness model should be differential in these contexts. Conclusions: The findings of this study provide empirical evidence that supports the importance of implementing strategies to improve empathy-related skills in children and adolescents, from the perspective of peace education and forgiveness. In addition, it was shown that aspects such as family climate, vulnerabilities of risk contexts and culture itself, can determine the development of socioemotional skills that favor forgiveness, empathy, and other interpersonal skills.
