At the heart of the non-implantable electronic revolution lies ionogels, which are remarkably conductive, thermally stable, and even antimicrobial materials. Yet, their potential has been hindered by poor mechanical properties. Herein, a double network (DN) ionogel crafted from 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Emim]Cl), acrylamide (AM), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was constructed. Tensile strength, fracture elongation, and conductivity can be adjusted across a wide range, enabling researchers to fabricate the material to meet specific needs. With adjustable mechanical properties, such as tensile strength (0.06–5.30 MPa) and fracture elongation (363–1373%), this ionogel possesses both robustness and flexibility. This ionogel exhibits a bi-modal response to temperature and strain, making it an ideal candidate for strain sensor applications. It also functions as a flexible strain sensor that can detect physiological signals in real time, opening doors to personalized health monitoring and disease management. Moreover, these gels’ ability to decode the intricate movements of sign language paves the way for improved communication accessibility for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. This DN ionogel lays the foundation for a future in which e-skins and wearable sensors will seamlessly integrate into our lives, revolutionizing healthcare, human–machine interaction, and beyond.

Background: Ischemic stroke (IS) is a highly heterogeneous disease. Recent studies have shown that epigenetic variables affect the immune response. However, only a few studies have examined the relationship between IS and m6A immunoregulation. Therefore, we aim to explore the methylation of RNA mediated by m6A regulatory factor and the immune microenvironment characteristics of IS.Methods: Differentially expressed m6A regulators were detected in IS microarray datasets GSE22255 and GSE58294. We used a series of machine learning algorithms to identify key IS-related m6A regulators and validated them on blood samples of IS patients, oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) microglia and GSE198710 independent data sets. Different m6A modification modes were determined and the patients were classified. In addition, we systematically associate these modification patterns with the characteristics of immune microenvironment, including infiltrating immune cells, immune function genes and immune response genes. Then we developed a model of m6A score to quantify the m6A modification in IS samples.Results: Through the analysis of the differences between the control group and IS patients, METTL16, LRPPRC, and RBM15 showed strong diagnostic significance in three independent data sets. In addition, qRT-PCR and Western blotting also confirmed that the expression of METTL16 and LRPPRC was downregulated and the expression of RBM15 was upregulated after ischemia. Two m6A modification modes and two m6A gene modification modes were also identified. m6A gene cluster A (high m6A value group) was positively correlated with acquired immunity, while m6A gene cluster B (low m6A value group) was positively correlated with innate immunity. Similarly, five immune-related hub genes were significantly associated with m6Acore (CD28, IFNG, LTF, LCN2, and MMP9).Conclusion: The modification of m6A is closely related to the immune microenvironment. The evaluation of individual m6A modification pattern may be helpful for future immunomodulatory therapy of anti-ischemic response.

Abstract Programmable smart materials that can respond locally to specific stimuli hold great potential for many applications, but controllable fabrication of these materials remains challenging. This work reports the development of novel programmable anisotropic materials with both magnetic and photothermal stimuli‐responsiveness, which are fabricated by anchoring thermosensitive poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAm) and magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of MoS2 nanosheets. Further embedding PNIPAm‐MoS2/Fe3O4 into 3D‐printed hydrogel cubes results in stimuli‐responsive building blocks, and the magnetic field can precisely control their orientation and near‐infrared (NIR) light absorbing property. Particularly, the variation of the orientation of MoS2/Fe3O4 block results in obvious changes of their photothermal efficiency and optical property. By exploiting the anisotropy of MoS2/Fe3O4 and their NIR light responsiveness, thermally‐induced phase transitions in individual 3D printed hydrogel building block can be locally controlled for magnetic field‐assisted programming a quick response (QR) code. Alternatively, fluorescent QR code with high contrast and security level can be achieved by photothermal‐induced release of fluorescent dyes. These 3D printed magnetically programmed hydrogels hold great potential for application in information storage, intelligent materials, and precise therapy.

Abstract Peptide molecule has high bioactivity, good biocompatibility, and excellent biodegradability. In addition, it has adjustable amino acid structure and sequence, which can be flexible designed and tailored to form supramolecular nano-assemblies with specific biomimicking, recognition, and targeting properties via molecular self-assembly. These unique properties of peptide nano-assemblies made it possible for utilizing them for biomedical and tissue engineering applications. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the motif design, self-assembly synthesis, and functional tailoring of peptide nano-assemblies for both cancer diagnosis and therapy. For this aim, firstly we demonstrate the methodologies on the synthesis of various functional pure and hybrid peptide nano-assemblies, by which the structural and functional tailoring of peptide nano-assemblies are introduced and discussed in detail. Secondly, we present the applications of peptide nano-assemblies for cancer diagnosis applications, including optical and magnetic imaging as well as biosensing of cancer cells. Thirdly, the design of peptide nano-assemblies for enzyme-mediated killing, chemo-therapy, photothermal therapy, and multi-therapy of cancer cells are introduced. Finally, the challenges and perspectives in this promising topic are discussed. This work will be useful for readers to understand the methodologies on peptide design and functional tailoring for highly effective, specific, and targeted diagnosis and therapy of cancers, and at the same time it will promote the development of cancer diagnosis and therapy by linking those knowledges in biological science, nanotechnology, biomedicine, tissue engineering, and analytical science.

The Gerlache Strait plays an important role for the transports of heat, nutrients, and primary producers between the northern West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) and the continental shelf in the southern WAP. The means, seasonal variations, and long-term trends of currents in the Gerlache Strait are analyzed based on Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data between 1999 and 2016 available from the Joint Archive for Shipboard ADCP (JASADCP) dataset. The results revealed that the mean currents between the sea surface and 300 m in the Gerlache Strait (known as the Gerlache Strait Current) were predominantly northeastward, associated with the northeastward intrusion of Modified Circumpolar Deep Water (MCDW). The variance ellipses of currents were in parallel to the principal axis of the strait. The currents reached the maximum during austral spring and summer and were minimum during austral winter. The long-term trends revealed that the mean currents were southwestward during austral fall or winter before 2005, and the northeastward currents increased between 1999 and 2011, weakened, and reversed between 2011 and 2016. The long-term shifts between warm and cold phases in the Gerlache Strait were associated with shifts between the dominance of northeastward and southwestward currents in the strait, which are respectively associated with the intrusion of warm MCDW in the south and the transport of cold water from the Bransfield Strait in the north.

Abstract Background Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) has been extensively reported play important roles in regulating the development and progression of cancers, including Glioblastoma (GBM). LINC01426 is a novel lncRNA that has been identified as an oncogenic gene in GBM. Herein, we attempted to elucidate the detailed functions and underlying mechanisms of LINC01426 in GBM. Methods LINC01426 expression in GBM cell lines and tissues were detected by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK8) assays, colony formation assays, subcutaneous tumor formation assays were utilized to investigate the biological functions of LINC01426 in GBM. Dual-luciferase reporter assays, RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) and bioinformatic analysis were performed to determine the underlying mechanisms. Results LINC01426 is up-regulated in malignant GBM tissues and cell lines and it is capable to promote GBM cell proliferation and growth. Mechanistically, LINC01426 serves as a molecular sponge to sequester the miR345-3p and thus enhancing the level of VAMP8, an oncogenic coding gene, to promote GBM progression. Conclusions Our results revealed the detailed mechanisms of LINC01426 facilitated cell proliferation and growth in GBM and report the clinical value of LINC01426 for GBM prognosis and treatment.

ObjectiveTo identify the genetic mechanisms of immunosuppression-related genes implicated in ischemic stroke.BackgroundA better understanding of immune-related genes (IGs) involved in the pathophysiology of ischemic stroke may help identify drug targets beneficial for immunomodulatory approaches and reducing stroke-induced immunosuppression complications.MethodsTwo datasets related to ischemic stroke were downloaded from the GEO database. Immunosuppression-associated genes were obtained from three databases (i.e., DisGeNET, HisgAtlas, and Drugbank). The CIBERSORT algorithm was used to calculate the mean proportions of 22 immune-infiltrating cells in the stroke samples. Differential gene expression analysis was performed to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in stroke. Immunosuppression-related crosstalk genes were identified as the overlapping genes between ischemic stroke-DEGs and IGs. Feature selection was performed using the Boruta algorithm and a classifier model was constructed to evaluate the prediction accuracy of the obtained immunosuppression-related crosstalk genes. Functional enrichment analysis, gene-transcriptional factor and gene-drug interaction networks were constructed.ResultsTwenty two immune cell subsets were identified in stroke, where resting CD4 T memory cells were significantly downregulated while M0 macrophages were significantly upregulated. By overlapping the 54 crosstalk genes obtained by feature selection with ischemic stroke-related genes obtained from the DisGenet database, 17 potentially most valuable immunosuppression-related crosstalk genes were obtained, ARG1, CD36, FCN1, GRN, IL7R, JAK2, MAFB, MMP9, PTEN, STAT3, STAT5A, THBS1, TLR2, TLR4, TLR7, TNFSF10, and VASP. Regulatory transcriptional factors targeting key immunosuppression-related crosstalk genes in stroke included STAT3, SPI1, CEPBD, SP1, TP53, NFIL3, STAT1, HIF1A, and JUN. In addition, signaling pathways enriched by the crosstalk genes, including PD-L1 expression and PD-1 checkpoint pathway, NF-kappa B signaling, IL-17 signaling, TNF signaling, and NOD-like receptor signaling, were also identified.ConclusionPutative crosstalk genes that link immunosuppression and ischemic stroke were identified using bioinformatics analysis and machine learning approaches. These may be regarded as potential therapeutic targets for ischemic stroke.

Owing to the excellent self-assembly properties and chemical flexibility, amyloid peptide were employed to build multifunctional architectures. Herein, we demonstrated the self-assembly of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in assistant of a sequence-designed peptide. As both surface ligands and self-assembly scaffolds of AuNPs, the formation of amyloid peptide nanofibrils could drive the self-assembly of AuNPs to form a fibrous hybrid architecture, which exhibits excellent electrochemical and colorimetric sensing performances. As a result, the electrochemical sensing towards H2O2 achieved a linear response range of from 0.1 to 25.85 mM (R2 = 0.997), and the detection limit was calculated to be 3.43 μM (S/N = 3). This self-assembled nanofiber was also employed for Hg2+ detection. The sensor produced a color change which can readout with naked eye and UV–visual spectroscopy, with a linear detection range of 10–70 μM of Hg2+ ion sample (R2 = 0.991). Herein, the Co3O4/NiCo2O4 nanocomposite has been prepared as a novel electrochemical sensor to accurately detect hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose. ZIF-67 is a metal-organic framework (MOF) with Co as the center metal ion. Co3O4 can be obtained by calcination of ZIF-67 at 700 °C, which can retain the structure of ZIF-67. The hollow Co3O4 nanocrystal was synthesized based on a calcination process of ZIF-67. This open structure can promote the whole Co3O4/NiCo2O4 nanocomposite larger accessible surface area and reactive sites. Co3O4 has good electrocatalytic performance, which has been applied in many fields. Moreover, H2O2 and dopamine sensing tests indicate that the as-prepared non-enzymatic electrochemical biosensor has good detection properties. The testing results indicate the as-prepared biosensor has a wide detection range, low detection limit, high selectivity, and long-term stability. These testing results suggest the potential application in food security, biomedicine, environmental detection, and pharmaceutical analysis.

In this work, ammonia cross-linked 8-armed polyethylene glycol hydrogel material was successfully synthesized and used as a template for synthesizing nanoparticles with fluorescent properties. The 8-armed polyethylene glycol hydrogel template was used to prepare molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2 QDs). The ammonium tetrathiomolybdate functioned as a molybdenum source and hydrazine hydrate functioned as a reducing agent. The fluorescence properties of the as-prepared MoS2 QDs were investigated. The bursting of fluorescence caused by adding different concentrations of explosive TNT was studied. The study indicated that the synthesized MoS2 QDs can be used for trace TNT detection with a detection limit of 6 nmol/L and a detection range of 16–700 nmol/L. Furthermore, it indicated that the fluorescence-bursting mechanism is static bursting.

Fluorescent nanomaterials, such as quantum dots, have developed rapidly in recent years and have been significantly developed. Herein, we demonstrate a facile, one-pot, and in-situ synthesis strategy to obtain fluorescent silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) coated with eight-armed poly (ethylene glycol) polymers (8PEG-AgNCs) via a direct gel-mediated process. During the synthesis, ammonium (NH3) served as the crosslinker for the gel formation via a amine-type Michael addition reaction. This hydrogel can be used as a template to synthesize AgNCs using its volume-limiting effect. The in-situ generation of AgNCs takes place inside the nanocages of the formed gels, which guarantees the homogenous distribution of AgNCs in the gel matrix, as well as the efficient coating of PEG on the nanoclusters. After the degradation of gels, the released 8PEG-AgNCs nanohybrids showed strong blue fluorescence and exhibited long-term stability in aqueous solution for nearly one year. Results showed that the fabricated sensor revealed excellent fluorescent sensitivity for the selective detection of Cu2+ with a detection limit of 50 nM and a wide linear detection range of 5–100 μM. It is proposed that the greater cross-linking density leads to smaller gel pores and allows the synthesis of AgNCs with fluorescent properties. These results indicate that this novel hydrogel with certain biodegradation has the potential to be applied as a fluorescent sensor for catalytic synthesis, fluorescence tracing in cells, and fluorescence detection fields. Meanwhile, the novel design principle has a certain versatility to accelerate the development and application of other kinds of metal nanoclusters and quantum dots.

We describe the preparation of nanoporous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) decorated with platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) in this work by electrospining polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers and subsequent carbonization and binding of PtNPs. The fabricated nanoporous CNF-PtNP hybrids were further utilized to modify glass carbon electrodes and used for the non-enzymatic amperometric biosensor for the highly sensitive detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The morphologies of the fabricated nanoporous CNF-PtNP hybrids were observed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and their structure was further investigated with Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectrum. The cyclic voltammetry experiments indicate that CNF-PtNP modified electrodes have high electrocatalytic activity toward H2O2 and the chronoamperometry measurements illustrate that the fabricated biosensor has a high sensitivity for detecting H2O2. We anticipate that the strategies utilized in this work will not only guide the further design and fabrication of functional nanofiber-based biomaterials and nanodevices, but also extend the potential applications in energy storage, cytology, and tissue engineering.

Night-light remote sensing imaging technologies have increasingly attracted attention with the development and application of focal plane arrays. On-orbit signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) test is an important link to evaluate night-light camera’s radiometric performance and the premise for quantitative application of remote sensing imageries. Under night-light illumination conditions, the illuminance of ground objects is very low and varies dramatically, the spatial uniformity of each pixel’s output cannot be guaranteed, and thus the traditional on-orbit test methods represented by variance method are unsuitable for low-resolution night-light cameras. To solve this problem, we proposed an effective on-orbit SNR test method based on consecutive time-sequence images that including the same objects. We analyzed the radiative transfer process between night-light camera and objects, and established a theoretical SNR model based on analysis of the generation and main sources of signal electrons and noise electrons. Finally, we took Luojia 1-01 satellite, the world’s first professional night-light remote sensing satellite, as reference and calculated the theoretical SNR and actual on-orbit SNR using consecutive images captured by Luojia 1-01 satellite. The actual results show the similar characteristics as theoretical results, and are higher than the theoretical results within the reasonable error tolerance, which fully guarantee the detection ability of night-light camera and verify the validity of this time-sequence-based method.

Electrospinning is a facile technique to fabricate nanofibrous materials with adjustable structure, property, and functions. Electrospun materials have exhibited wide applications in the fields of materials science, biomedicine, tissue engineering, energy storage, environmental science, sensing, and others. In this review, we present recent advance in the fabrication of nanoparticles (NPs)-based materials interfaces through electrospinning technique and their applications for high-performance sensors. To achieve this aim, first the strategies for fabricating various materials interfaces through electrospinning NPs, such as metallic, oxide, alloy/metal oxide, and carbon NPs, are demonstrated and discussed, and then the sensor applications of the fabricated NPs-based materials interfaces in electrochemical, electric, fluorescent, colorimetric, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, photoelectric, and chemoresistance-based sensing and detection are presented and discussed in detail. We believe that this study will be helpful for readers to understand the fabrication of functional materials interfaces by electrospinning, and at the same time will promote the design and fabrication of electrospun nano/micro-devices for wider applications in bioanalysis and label-free sensors.

The conjugation of graphene and polymers has attracted great attention for the fabrication of functional hybrid nanomaterials. Here, we demonstrate the modification of graphene oxide (GO) with adamantane (AMT) through the diimide-activated amidation reaction. The modification of GO with AMT improves the dispersion and decreases the interfacial polarization of GO, causing a lower dielectric constant for the fabricated GO/AMT hybrid materials. The structures of GO/AMT were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, the mechanical properties, thermal stability, and dielectric constant of GO/AMT composites were measured at a low cured temperature using various techniques, such as differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. It was found that the synthesized GO/AMT materials with different contents were blended into cyanate ester (CE) resins, resulting in a lower cure temperature, smaller dielectric constant, higher thermal stability, and stronger water resistance. It is expected that this novel GO/AMT-CE material will have potential applications for replacing traditional thermosetting resins.

As one of the experimental payloads on Luojia-1 satellite, the nighttime imaging camera works with a high sensitivity to acquire nighttime light on earth. Solar stray light is a fatal problem for optical satellite works in the polar orbit, even for nighttime scene imaging, resulting in image saturation and light signal detection failure. To solve this problem, an analysis of the range of solar incident angles was conducted firstly. Based on the result, a special-shaped baffle was designed to avoid direct sunlight incidence. Moreover, the capability of stray light elimination of the lens was enhanced by an order of magnitude via optimizing the internal structure. An evaluation of secondary scattering stray lights into the camera from surrounding parts was performed based on a real satellite model. The results showed that the stray light elimination reaches a 10−10 order, meeting design requirements. Utilizing on-orbit images, the ability of satellites in illuminated areas to obtain artificial lights in dawn-dusk area was verified, proving the effectiveness of the stray light elimination design.

Here we report the fabrication of graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes covalently combined with bovine serum albumin (BSA) for metal ions detection. In this system, BSA acts as a transporter protein in the membrane and endows the membrane with selective recognition of Co2+, Cu2+, AuCl4−, and Fe2+. Combining the metal-binding ability of BSA and the large surface area of GO, the hybrid membrane can be used as a water purification strategy to selectively absorb a large amount of AuCl4− from HAuCl4 solution. Moreover, BSA could reduce the membrane-immobilized AuCl4− by adding sodium borohydride (NaBH4). Interestingly, adsorption experiments on three kinds of metal ions showed that the GO⁻BSA membrane had good selective adsorption of Co2+ compared with Cu2+ and Fe2+. The morphology and composition changes of the membrane were observed with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. It is expected that this facile strategy for fabricating large-scale graphene-biomolecule membranes will spark inspirations in the development of functional nanomaterials and wastewater purification.

The instability of the principal distance of the nighttime light remote-sensing camera of the Luojia 1-01 satellite directly affects the geometric accuracy of images, consequently affecting the results of analysis of nighttime light remote-sensing data. Based on the theory of optical passive athermal design, a mathematical model of optical-passive athermal design for principal distance stabilization is established. Positive and negative lenses of different materials and the mechanical structures of different materials are matched to optimize the optical system. According to the index requirements of the Luojia 1-01 camera, an image-telecentric optical system was designed under the guidance of the established mathematical model. In the temperature range of −20 °C to +60 °C, the principal distance of the system changes from −0.01 μm to +0.28 μm. After on-orbit testing, the geometric accuracy of the designed nighttime light remote-sensing camera is better than 0.20 pixels and less than index requirement of 0.3 pixels, which indicating that the principal distance maintains good stability on-orbit and meets the application requirements of nighttime light remote sensing.

Luojia1-01 satellite is the first scientific experimental satellite applied for night-time light remote sensing data acquisition, and the payload is an optical camera with high sensitivity, high radiation measurement accuracy and stable elements of interior orientation. At the same time, a special shaped hood is designed, which significantly improved the ability of the camera to suppress stray light. Camera electronics adopts the integrated design of focal plane and imaging processing, which greatly reduces the volume and weight of the system. In this paper, the design of the optical camera is summarized, and the results of in-orbit imaging performance tests are analyzed. The results show that the dynamic modulation transfer function (MTF) of the camera is better than 0.17, and the SNR is better than 35 dB under the condition of 10 lx illuminance and 0.3 reflectivity and all indicators meet the design requirements. The data obtained have been widely applied in many fields such as the process of urbanization, light pollution analysis, marine fisheries detection and military.

The design and optimal synthesis of functional nanomaterials can meet the requirements of energy and environmental science. As a typical photocatalyst, TiO2 can be used to degrade dyes into non-toxic substances. In this work, we demonstrated the in-situ hydrothermal synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs)-modified TiO2 (CQDs/TiO2) particles, and the subsequent fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) graphene oxide (GO) foam doped with CQDs/TiO2 via a facile strategy. By making full use of the up-conversion characteristics of CQDs, the synthesized CQDs/TiO2 exhibited high catalytic activity under visible light. In order to recover the photocatalyst conveniently, CQDs/TiO2 and GO were mixed by ultrasound and loaded on 3D polyurethane foam (PUF) by the multiple impregnation method. It was found that GO, CQDs/TiO2, and PUF reveal synergistic effects on the dye adsorption and photocatalytic degradation processes. The fabricated 3D CQDs/TiO2/GO foam system with a stable structure can maintain a high photocatalytic degradation efficiency after using at least five times. It is expected that the fabricated 3D materials will have potential applications in the fields of oil water separation, the removal of oils, and the photothermal desalination of seawater.

We demonstrate the fabrication of novel reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based double network (DN) hydrogels through the polymerization of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC). The facile synthesis of DN hydrogels includes the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) by CMC, and the subsequent polymerization of PNIPAm. The presence of rGO in the fabricated PNIPAm/CMC/rGO DN hydrogels enhances the compressibility and flexibility of hydrogels with respect to pure PNIPAm hydrogels, and they exhibit favorable thermoresponsivity, compressibility, and conductivity. The created hydrogels can be continuously cyclically compressed and have excellent bending properties. Furthermore, it was found that the hydrogels are pressure- and temperature-sensitive, and can be applied to the design of both pressure and temperature sensors to detect mechanical deformation and to measure temperature. Our preliminary results suggest that these rGO-based DN hydrogels exhibit a high potential for the fabrication of soft robotics and artificially intelligent skin-like devices.

A novel polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous membrane conjugated with platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) was fabricated by electrospinning and electrostatic assembly techniques. In this procedure, PAN was electrospun with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) together as precursor materials. First, amine groups were introduced onto PAN nanofibers, and then the as-prepared negative-charged platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) were conjugated onto the surface of the amino-modified PAN nanofibers uniformly by the electrostatic interaction-mediated assembly. The fabricated PAN–PtNPs hybrid nanofibrous membrane was further utilized to modify the glassy carbon electrodes and was used for the fabrication of a non-enzymatic amperometric sensor to detect hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The electrochemical results indicated that, due to the uniform dispersion of PtNPs and the electrostatic interaction between amine groups and PtNPs, the fabricated PAN–PtNPs nanofibrous membrane-based electrochemical sensor showed excellent electrocatalytic activity toward H2O2, and the chronoamperometry measurements illustrated that the fabricated sensor had a high sensitivity for detecting H2O2. It is anticipated that the strategies used in this work will not only guide the design and fabrication of functional polymeric nanofiber-based biomaterials and nanodevices, but also extend their potential applications in energy storage, cytology, and tissue engineering.

Various diseases caused by harmful microorganisms and viruses have caused serious harm and huge economic losses to society. Thus, rapid detection of harmful microorganisms and viruses is necessary for disease prevention and treatment. Nanomaterials have unique properties that other materials do not possess, such as a small size effect and quantum size effect. Introducing nanomaterials into biosensors improves the performance of biosensors for faster and more accurate detection of microorganisms and viruses. This review aims to introduce the different kinds of biosensors and the latest advances in the application of nanomaterials in biosensors. In particular, this review focuses on describing the physicochemical properties of zero-, one-, two-, and three-dimensional nanostructures as well as nanoenzymes. Finally, this review discusses the applications of nanobiosensors in the detection of microorganisms and viruses and the future directions of nanobiosensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surrounding rock deterioration and large deformation have always been a significant difficulty in designing and constructing tunnels in soft rock. The key lies in real-time perception and quantitative assessment of the damaged area around the tunnel. An in situ microseismic (MS) monitoring system is established in the plateau soft tock tunnel. This technique facilitates spatiotemporal monitoring of the rock mass's fracturing expansion and squeezing deformation, which agree well with field convergence deformation results. The formation mechanisms of progressive failure evolution of soft rock tunnels were discussed and analyzed with MS data and numerical results. The results demonstrate that: (1) Localized stress concentration and layered rock result in significant asymmetry in micro-fractures propagation in the tunnel radial section. As excavation continues, the fracture extension area extends into the deep surrounding rockmass on the east side affected by the weak bedding; (2) Tunnel excavation and long-term deformation can induce tensile shear action on the rock mass, vertical tension fractures (account for 45%) exist in deep rockmass, which play a crucial role in controlling the macroscopic failure of surrounding rock; and (3) Based on the radiated MS energy, a three-dimensional model was created to visualize the damage zone of the tunnel surrounding rock. The model depicted varying degrees of damage, and three high damage zones were identified. Generally, the depth of high damage zone ranged from 4 m to 12 m. This study may be a valuable reference for the warning and controlling of large deformations in similar projects.

Abstract This article aims to elucidate the varying effects of democratization in ASEAN members on the normative changes in the core principles of the “ASEAN Way.” Utilizing a regional-centric approach that emphasizes ASEAN members’ agency, the article posits that two critical variables shape the changing trajectory of ASEAN norms: ASEAN members' democratic performances and their regional status. While an ASEAN member’s democratic performance influences its willingness to advocate for normative changes, its regional status is also crucial in determining its capability to implement changes by navigating the divergent interests among ASEAN members. Only the ASEAN member with a high-quality democratic performance at home and recognized regional leadership can effectively bring about normative changes to ASEAN norms. Otherwise, either the domestic democratic deficit or a lack of leadership status will hinder the ASEAN members’ efforts to promote normative changes. Using the process-tracing method, the article empirically focuses on the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia for comparative case studies. The findings reveal that the Philippines’ poor democratic performance since the democratic restoration in 1986 has hindered its motivation to push for normative changes in ASEAN, rendering the Philippines a reluctant promoter. Although Thailand has made notable achievements in democratic consolidation since the downfall of junta rule in 1992, its lack of regional leadership has greatly limited its capability to reconcile the divergent interests among ASEAN members, resulting in the failure of its “flexible engagement” initiative. Conversely, Indonesia, with a high-quality democratic performance at home and bolstered by its regional leadership status, successfully brought significant changes to ASEAN norms by facilitating the ASEAN Charter signed in 2007.
