Abstract Solanum lycopersicum, which is commonly known as tomato, not only serves as a dietary fruit vegetable but also a functional food that protects humans against chronic degenerative illnesses such as diabetes microvascular complications, viral diseases, and cancers. The nutritional benefit of tomato is largely attributed to its phytonutrient composition. The influence of post‐harvest processing methods, digestion process, and compounds interaction on the bio‐accessibility of phytonutrients are key aspects to consider when investigating the potential impact of tomato on human health. Besides, information on the underlying mechanism of tomato phytochemicals’ interaction and pharmacological action with other food components could pave the way for novel functional research study. To date, the impact of different processing methods and digestion effect on the extraction of phytochemicals from tomato showed contradictory findings. Although thermal processing and the application of spices and/or condiments like olive oil on tomato are common practices in domestic cooking, understanding of the changes in bioactivity in the processed tomato products is still limited. This paper aimed to summarize the current post‐harvest processing methods that maximize the health benefits of tomato and offer additional insight into the development of tomato and its related products with optimal pharmacological values. This study also reviewed several major phytochemicals in tomato with functional values and their possible interaction with other food components. The impact of in vitro digestion on the bio‐accessibility and functional activity of tomato phytochemicals were critically discussed, alongside selected post‐harvest processing methods that could maximize the health benefit and commercial values of tomato.

Background: Reported outcomes in patients with primary immunodeficiency (PID) infected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been variable owing to a combination of viral strain heterogeneity, differences in patient populations and health systems, and local availability of vaccination and specific COVID-19 therapies. There are few reports on the experience of Australian patients with PID during the pandemic. Objectives: In this retrospective study, we describe the baseline characteristics and short-term outcomes of patients with PID who were infected by COVID-19 and known to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, a major tertiary center in Victoria, Australia. Methods: Between April 2021 and April 2022, a total of 31 of 138 patients with PID were affected by COVID-19. More than half of them had 3 vaccine doses at the time of infection (which at the time was considered being fully vaccinated) and received COVID-19–targeted treatment. Results: All of the infected patients had ambulatory disease, with no cases of morbidity or mortality. In line with the current literature, the PID subtypes described did not appear to independently predict worse outcomes. Conclusions: Some protective factors include this cohort's relatively younger average age and its high uptake of vaccination and COVID-19 therapies.

Abstract Background/aims Diabetes mellitus (DM) is highly susceptible to diabetic hind limb ischemia (DHI). MicroRNA (MiR)-17-5p is downregulated in DM and plays a key role in vascular protection. Endothelial progenitor cell (EPC)-released exosomes (EPC-EXs) contribute to vascular protection and ischemic tissue repair by transferring their contained miRs to target cells. Here, we investigated whether miR-17-5p-enriched EPC-EXs (EPC-EXsmiR-17-5p) had conspicuous effects on protecting vascular and skeletal muscle in DHI in vitro and in vivo. Methods EPCs transfected with scrambled control or miR-17-5p mimics were used to generate EPC-EXs and EPC-EXsmiR-17-5p. Db/db mice were subjected to hind limb ischemia. After the surgery, EPC-EXs and EPC-EXsmiR-17-5p were injected into the gastrocnemius muscle of the hind limb once every 7 days for 3 weeks. Blood flow, microvessel density, capillary angiogenesis, gastrocnemius muscle weight, structure integrity, and apoptosis in the hind limb were assessed. Vascular endothelial cells (ECs) and myoblast cells (C2C12 cells) were subjected to hypoxia plus high glucose (HG) and cocultured with EPC-EXs and EPC-EXsmiR-17-5p. A bioinformatics assay was used to analyze the potential target gene of miR-17-5p, the levels of SPRED1, PI3K, phosphorylated Akt, cleaved caspase-9 and cleaved caspase-3 were measured, and a PI3K inhibitor (LY294002) was used for pathway analysis. Results In the DHI mouse model, miR-17-5p was markedly decreased in hind limb vessels and muscle tissues, and infusion of EPC-EXsmiR-17-5p was more effective than EPC-EXs in increasing miR-17-5p levels, blood flow, microvessel density, and capillary angiogenesis, as well as in promoting muscle weight, force production and structural integrity while reducing apoptosis in gastrocnemius muscle. In Hypoxia plus HG-injured ECs and C2C12 cells, we found that EPC-EXsmiR-17-5p could deliver their carried miR-17-5p into target ECs and C2C12 cells and subsequently downregulate the target protein SPRED1 while increasing the levels of PI3K and phosphorylated Akt. EPC-EXsmiR-17-5p were more effective than EPC-EXs in decreasing apoptosis and necrosis while increasing viability, migration, and tube formation in Hypoxia plus HG-injured ECs and in decreasing apoptosis while increasing viability and myotube formation in C2C12 cells. These effects of EPC-EXsmiR-17-5p could be abolished by a PI3K inhibitor (LY294002). Conclusion Our results suggest that miR-17-5p promotes the beneficial effects of EPC-EXs on DHI by protecting vascular ECs and muscle cell functions.

Psoriasis is a common chronic recurrent disease in dermatology. IL-23 / Th17 axis plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. In psoriasis patients, the gut-microbiota-skin axis may exit. Gut microbiota dybiosis may be involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis by inducing the intestinal mucosal barrier dysfunction, bacterial translocation, inducing excessive activation of Th17, and suppressing the differention of regulatory T cells. We reviewed the recent advances of potential relation between psoriasis and gut microbiota. Probiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation could be novel therapy for psoriasis.

Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) is not a rare complication during anti-tuberculosis treatment in some patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). We aimed to develop a risk prediction model for early recognition of patients with PTB at high risk for AKI during anti-TB treatment.Methods This retrospective cohort study assessed the clinical baseline, and laboratory test data of 315 inpatients with active PTB who were screened for predictive factors from January 2019 to June 2020. The elements were analyzed by logistic regression analysis. A nomogram was established by the results of the logistic regression analysis. The prediction model discrimination and calibration were evaluated by the concordance index (C-index), ROC curve, and Hosmer-Lemeshow analysis.Results A total of 315 patients with PTB were enrolled (67 patients with AKI and 248 patients without AKI). Seven factors, including microalbuminuria, hematuria, cystatin-C (CYS-C), albumin (ALB), creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs), body mass index (BMI), and CA-125 were acquired to develop the predictive model. According to the logistic regression, microalbuminuria (OR = 3.038, 95%CI 1.168–7.904), hematuria (OR = 3.656, 95%CI 1.325–10.083), CYS-C (OR = 4.416, 95%CI 2.296–8.491), and CA-125 (OR = 3.93, 95%CI 1.436–10.756) were risk parameter, while ALB (OR = 0.741, 95%CI 0.650–0.844) was protective parameter. The nomogram demonstrated good prediction in estimating AKI (C-index= 0.967, AUC = 0.967, 95%CI (0.941–0.984), sensitivity = 91.04%, specificity = 93.95%, Hosmer-Lemeshow analysis SD = 0.00054, and quantile of absolute error = 0.049).Conclusions Microalbuminuria, hematuria, ALB reduction, elevated CYS-C, and CA-125 are predictive factors for the development of AKI in patients with PTB during anti-TB treatments. The predictive nomogram based on five predictive factors is achieved good risk prediction for AKI during anti-TB treatments.

Abstract Alterations in the three chemosensory modalities—smell, taste, and chemesthesis—have been implicated in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), yet emerging data suggest a wide geographic and ethnic variation in the prevalence of these symptoms. Studies on chemosensory disorders in COVID-19 have predominantly focused on Caucasian populations whereas Asians remain understudied. We conducted a nationwide, multicentre cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire on a cohort of RT-PCR-confirmed adult COVID-19 patients in Malaysia between 6 June and 30 November 2020. The aim of our study was to investigate their presenting symptoms and assess their chemosensory function using self-ratings of perceived smell, taste, chemesthesis, and nasal blockage. In this cohort of 498 patients, 41.4% reported smell and/or taste loss when diagnosed with COVID-19, which was the commonest symptom. Blocked nose, loss of appetite, and gastrointestinal disturbances were independent predictors of smell and/or taste loss on multivariate analysis. Self-ratings of chemosensory function revealed a reduction in smell, taste, and chemesthesis across the entire cohort of patients that was more profound among those reporting smell and/or taste loss as their presenting symptom. Perceived nasal obstruction accounted for only a small proportion of changes in smell and taste, but not for chemesthesis, supporting viral disruption of sensorineural mechanisms as the dominant aetiology of chemosensory dysfunction. Our study suggests that chemosensory dysfunction in COVID-19 is more widespread than previously reported among Asians and may be related to the infectivity of viral strains. The main clinical manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) onset are respiratory symptoms, including cough, sputum, and dyspnea. However, a significant proportion of patients initially manifested non-respiratory symptoms, such as fever, myalgia, and diarrhea. Here, we compared the different characteristics and outcomes between the patients with respiratory symptoms and non-respiratory symptoms at illness onset. The patients admitted to the respiratory departments from eight hospitals in Hunan and Guangxi Province with nucleic acid-positive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) were recruited. Epidemiological information, clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, and radiological characteristics, treatment regimens, and outcomes data were recorded and analyzed. The median age of the recruited 541 subjects was 43 years (IQR, 33–55). Of the 541 subjects, 404 (74.5%) subjects had initial symptom that were respiratory, while 137 (25.5%) subjects had non-respiratory symptoms. Goaf-side entry with small coal pillars (GESCPs) has an intrinsic advantage of improving the coal recovery ratio by implementing drifts with a small pillar size next to previous goafs. This technology is increasingly gaining popularity in the longwall mining of underground coal mines in China. This study focuses on understanding the critical condition of the main roof failure above the solid coal side of the goaf-side entry and investigating the key parameters that affect the structural stability of the surrounding rocks for GESCP. Mechanical models of the main roof and multi-layer cracking structures of the side wall of GESCP were established and the limiting equilibrium equation for the structural stability of the surrounding rock was proposed. The characteristics affecting the main parameters of the structural stability of the surrounding rock were analyzed. The research findings suggest that the integrity of the coal side walls plays a major role in maintaining the structural stability of the surrounding rock for GESCP under the given cross-sectional dimensions. Other factors, including the uniform load of overburden, the width of the coal pillar, the length of the roof hanging along the goaf side, and the fracture length in the main roof of the entry side wall, are less important. The key to achieving structural stability of the surrounding rocks for GESCP is to enhance the strength of the supporting coal side walls and, especially, to ensure the integrity of the small coal pillars. These conclusions were verified by engineering practice at the 1252(1) haulage gateway in a Coal Mine in China.

Abstract Transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43) has been identified as the major component of ubiquitinated inclusions found in patients with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Increasing evidence suggests prion-like transmission of TDP-43 aggregates via neuroanatomic connection in vitro and pyramidal tract in vivo. However, it is still unknown whether the spreading of pathological TDP-43 sequentially via pyramidal tract can initiate ALS-like pathology and phenotypes. In this study, we reported that injection of TDP-43 preformed fibrils (PFFs) into the primary motor cortex (M1) of Thy1-e (IRES-TARDBP) 1 mice induced the spreading of pathological TDP-43 along pyramidal tract axons anterogradely. Moreover, TDP-43 PFFs-injected Thy1-e (IRES-TARDBP) 1 mice displayed ALS-like neuropathological features and symptoms, including motor dysfunctions and electrophysiological abnormalities. These findings provide direct evidence that transmission of pathological TDP-43 along pyramidal tract induces ALS-like phenotypes, which further suggest the potential mechanism for TDP-43 proteinopathy.

Isolated sphenoid sinus disease (ISSD) is an uncommon entity and may present with non-specific symptoms. As sphenoid sinus is located adjacent to vital structures, a diseased sphenoid sinus can potentially lead to devastating complications such as cranial neuropathies, cavernous sinus thrombosis and intracranial abscess. Herein, we report a case series of three patients who presented with different localization of headache as their main symptom. Endoscopic nasal assessment showed abnormal nasal cavity findings with mucosal thickening and soft tissue mass occupying the sphenoid sinus revealed by computed tomography (CT) scan. All the sphenoid sinuses were drained via endoscopic approach. Post operatively, antibiotics or anti-fungal were given, however, these three cases displayed the possible variation in severity of this disease. Case 1 had an uncomplicated inflammatory disease of the sphenoid sinus, which is of bacterial origin, while the other two cases had fungal infection. Case 2 achieved disease stability with anti-fungal treatment, but Case 3 had a serious complication after treatment with permanent vision loss. A patient who presents with atypical headache, not responsive to analgesia should be investigated promptly with nasal endoscopic examination and radiological imaging for isolated sphenoid sinus disease to avoid devastating complications.

ObjectivePneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) is a life-threatening disease associated with a high mortality rate among immunocompromised patient populations. Invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) is a crucial component of treatment for PCP patients with progressive hypoxemia. This study explored the risk factors for IMV and established a model for early predicting the risk of IMV among patients with PCP.MethodsA multicenter, observational cohort study was conducted in 10 hospitals in China. Patients diagnosed with PCP were included, and their baseline clinical characteristics were collected. A Boruta analysis was performed to identify potentially important clinical features associated with the use of IMV during hospitalization. Selected variables were further analyzed using univariate and multivariable logistic regression. A logistic regression model was established based on independent risk factors for IMV and visualized using a nomogram.ResultsIn total, 103 patients comprised the training cohort for model development, and 45 comprised the validation cohort to confirm the model’s performance. No significant differences were observed in baseline clinical characteristics between the training and validation cohorts. Boruta analysis identified eight clinical features associated with IMV, three of which were further confirmed to be independent risk factors for IMV, including age (odds ratio [OR] 2.615 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.110–6.159]; p = 0.028), oxygenation index (OR 0.217 [95% CI 0.078–0.604]; p = 0.003), and serum lactate dehydrogenase level (OR 1.864 [95% CI 1.040–3.341]; p = 0.037). Incorporating these three variables, the nomogram achieved good concordance indices of 0.829 (95% CI 0.752–0.906) and 0.818 (95% CI 0.686–0.950) in predicting IMV in the training and validation cohorts, respectively, and had well-fitted calibration curves.ConclusionsThe nomogram demonstrated accurate prediction of IMV in patients with PCP. Clinical application of this model enables early identification of patients with PCP who require IMV, which, in turn, may lead to rational therapeutic choices and improved clinical outcomes.

Abstract Background An asymptomatic SCUBA (Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) diver was discovered to have an intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration during routine pre-course screening. This is the first reported case of a diver who, having previously completed several recreational and military diving courses, was subsequently diagnosed with a congenital lung condition, possibly contraindicating diving. Presently, there is no available literature providing guidance on the diving fitness of patients with such a condition. Case presentation An asymptomatic 26-year-old male diver was nominated to attend an overseas naval diving course. Prior to this, he had been medically certified to participate in, and had successfully completed other military and recreational diving courses. He had also completed several hyperbaric dives up to a depth of 50 m and 45 recreational dives up to a depth of 30 m. He did not have a history of diving-related injuries or complications. He had never smoked and did not have any medical or congenital conditions, specifically recurrent respiratory infections. As part of pre-course screening requirements, a lateral Chest X-ray was performed, which revealed a left lower lobe pulmonary nodule. This was subsequently diagnosed as a cavitatory left lower lobe intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration on Computed Tomography Thorax. The diver remains asymptomatic and well at the time of writing and has been accepted to participate in another overseas course involving only dry diving in a hyperbaric chamber, with no prerequisites for him to undergo surgery. Conclusion Although bronchopulmonary sequestrations lack communication with the tracheobronchial tree, they may still contain pockets of air, even if not radiologically visible. This can be attributed to anomalous connections which link them to other bronchi, lung parenchyma and/or pores of Kohn. As such, there is a higher theoretical risk of pulmonary barotrauma during diving, leading to pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, or cerebral arterial gas embolism. Taking these into consideration, the current clinical consensus is that bronchopulmonary sequestrations and all other air-containing lung parenchymal lesions should be regarded as contraindications to diving. Patients who have undergone definitive and uncomplicated surgical resection may be considered fit to dive.

The impact of transgenic crops on non-target organisms is a key aspect of environmental safety assessment to transgenic crops. In the present study, we fed two snail species, Bradybaena (Acusta) ravida (B. ravida) and Bradybaena similaris (Ferussac)(B. similaris), with the leaves of transgenic Bt cotton Zhong 30 (Z30) and control cotton, its parent line zhong 16 (Z16), to assess the environmental safety of Bt cotton to common non-target organisms in the field. Survival, body weight, shell diameter, helix number, reproduction rate, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and Bt protein concentration in snails were monitored in 15 days and 180 days experiments. We also monitored the population dynamics of B. ravida and B. similaris in Z30 and Z16 cotton fields for two successive years. Compared to the snails fed on the control cotton Z16, there was no significant difference in survival, growth, reproduction, and SOD activity on Bt cotton Z30. Bt protein concentrations were significantly between different treatments, and Bt protein residues were only detected in the feces of the Z30 treatment. According to the field data, the number of B. ravida and B. similaris fluctuated considerably across seasons over the entire cotton-growing season; however, there were no significant differences between the Bt and control cotton fields at similar time. As the results showed, in our experiments, Bt cotton Z30 had no adverse effects on the two snail species, both in the laboratory and in the fields.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike (S) protein mediates infection of cells expressing angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). ACE2 is also the viral receptor of SARS-CoV (SARS-CoV-1), a related coronavirus that emerged in 2002-2003. Horseshoe bats (genus Rhinolophus) are presumed to be the original reservoir of both viruses, and a SARS-like coronavirus, RaTG13, closely related to SARS-CoV-2, has been identified in one horseshoe-bat species. Here we characterize the ability of the S-protein receptor-binding domains (RBDs) of SARS-CoV-1, SARS-CoV-2, pangolin coronavirus (PgCoV), RaTG13, and LyRa11, a bat virus similar to SARS-CoV-1, to bind a range of ACE2 orthologs. We observed that the PgCoV RBD bound human ACE2 at least as efficiently as the SARS-CoV-2 RBD, and that both RBDs bound pangolin ACE2 efficiently. We also observed a high level of variability in binding to closely related horseshoe-bat ACE2 orthologs consistent with the heterogeneity of their RBD-binding regions. However five consensus horseshoe-bat ACE2 residues enhanced ACE2 binding to the SARS-CoV-2 RBD and neutralization of SARS-CoV-2 pseudoviruses by an enzymatically inactive immunoadhesin form of human ACE2 (hACE2-NN-Fc). Two of these mutations impaired neutralization of SARS-CoV-1 pseudoviruses. An hACE2-NN-Fc variant bearing all five mutations neutralized both SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus and infectious virus more efficiently than wild-type hACE2-NN-Fc. These data suggest that SARS-CoV-1 and -2 originate from distinct bat species, and identify a more potently neutralizing form of soluble ACE2.

ObjectiveTo understand the clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients with clinically diagnosed bacterial co-infection (CDBC), and therefore contributing to their early identification and prognosis estimation.Method905 COVID-19 patients from 7 different centers were enrolled. The demography data, clinical manifestations, laboratory results, and treatments were collected accordingly for further analyses.ResultsAround 9.5% of the enrolled COVID-19 patients were diagnosed with CDBC. Older patients or patients with cardiovascular comorbidities have increased CDBC probability. Increased body temperature, longer fever duration, anhelation, gastrointestinal symptoms, illness severity, intensive care unit attending, ventilation treatment, glucocorticoid therapy, longer hospitalization time are correlated to CDBC. Among laboratory results, increased white blood cell counting (mainly neutrophil), lymphocytopenia, increased procalcitonin, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reaction protein, D-dimer, blood urea nitrogen, lactate dehydrogenase, brain natriuretic peptide, myoglobin, blood sugar and decreased albumin are also observed, indicating multiple system functional damage. Radiology results suggested ground glass opacity mixed with high density effusion opacities and even pleural effusion.ConclusionThe aged COVID-19 patients with increased inflammatory indicators, worse lymphopenia and cardiovascular comorbidities are more likely to have clinically diagnosed bacterial co-infection. Moreover, they tend to have severer clinical manifestations and increased probability of multiple system functional damage.

Previous studies regarding the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in patients with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) have implicated heterogenous findings. Additionally, the early screening of ASD high-risk population for ASD and identifying ASD risk factors in PWS patients have not been explored. This study included 218 Chinese PWS patients aged 3 months to 18 years old. 78% of subjects were identified as high risk for ASD by ASQ-3 Communication domain score for those younger than 3 years of age and 84% of subjects were classified as high risk for ASD by the GARS-3 for those aged 3 years and older. Among PWS clinical measurements, under-height (P = 0.0186), overweight (P = 0.0248), and obstructive sleep apnea (P = 0.0259) were each significantly correlated with ASD risk. These risk factors and their internal relationship with ASD or ASD traits warrant further studies.

BackgroundCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has developed into a worldwide pandemic. This study aimed to retrospectively describe the use of corticosteroids in treating COVID-19.MethodsFor this multicenter retrospective study, medical records from 488 symptomatic COVID-19 patients were reviewed. Patients were divided into severe and nonsevere groups. Baseline characteristics, signs and symptoms, laboratory findings, treatments, and disease outcomes were compared. Specific data for corticosteroid treatment were further analyzed.ResultsFour hundred fifty COVID-19 patients were included in this study, including 82 severe patients and 368 nonsevere cases. Out of the 450 patients, 126 (28.0%) received corticosteroid treatment. In the 126 patients treated with corticosteroids, the median daily dose of corticosteroid therapy was 56.6 [interquartile range (IQR): 40.0–78.4] mg and median corticosteroid therapy duration was 5.0 (IQR: 3.0–7.0) days. Among nonsevere cases, patients treated with corticosteroids were significantly older in comparison with patients who did not receive corticosteroid treatment (p0.05).ConclusionOur study indicates that corticosteroids are regarded as one of treatments in the general clinical practice of COVID-19. However, corticosteroid use may be accompanied by increased use of antibiotics, longer hospitalization, and prolonged viral shedding.

This paper studied the fumigating activity of Litsea cubeba oil and citral on Solenopsis invicta, identified and analyzed the chemical constituents and volatile components of L. cubeba oil via solid-phase microextraction which were then identified via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that citral and (z)-3,7-dimethylocta-2,6-diena were the main components of L. cubeba oil, as well as its volatile compounds. According to the experimental results, L. cubeba oil and citral had good fumigating activity on workers, and also had significant inhibition on the walking ability and climbing ability of workers. At the same time, the effects of the two agentia on the fumigating activity and behavioral inhibition of microergate were stronger than those of macroergate. After treating with L. cubeba oil and citral for 24 hours, the walking rate and grasping rate of microergate were both 0 %. The results showed that L. cubeba oil and citral had good control effect on S. invicta.

High voltage circuit-breakers with superior performance are demanded as the transmission distance extends and voltage rises, which are often subject to high current and voltage surges. Commercial circuit-breaker contacts are conventionally manufactured with CuW alloy by infiltration method, limiting their performance improvement in withstanding current (or voltage) and lifespan. In this paper, we optimize the microstructure and component of Al _2 O _3 reinforced Cu@W80 composites (Al _2 O _3 /Cu@W80), which fabricates the Cu@W powder first by chemical coating and the composites by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. The composites exhibit enhanced hardness (maximum value up to 273 HV) due to the addition of Al _2 O _3 powder and a more homogeneous and refined tungsten phase compared to the CuW counterpart. Moreover, the dispersed Al _2 O _3 particles with low work function become the preferred ablation phase and guide the electrical arcs, further improving the anti-arc erosion performance of Al _2 O _3 /Cu@W80. Our findings suggest that the Al _2 O _3 /Cu@W80 composite with optimized components could be potentially used as a candidate for high-voltage circuit-breaker contacts.

A new Cd(II) coordination polymer, {[Cd3(L)2(DMF)2(H2O)2]·H2O}n (H2L = 1,3-bisbenzyl-2-imidazolidine-4,5-dicarboxylic acid) was synthesized by one-pot synthesis method from 1,3-bisbenzyl-2-imidazolidine-4,5-dicarboxylic acid, NaOH, DMF, and Cd(NO3)2·4H2O. Its structure was determined by elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural analysis shows that three Cd(II) ions are all six-coordinated with four oxygen atoms of four 1,3-bisbenzyl-2-imidazolidine-4,5-dicarboxylate ligands and two O atoms from two DMF molecules (Cd1) or two oxygen atoms of two coordinated H2O molecules (Cd2 and Cd3) to form an octahedral coordination geometry. The Cd(II) coordination polymer displays a 1D chained structure by the bridging carboxylate groups from 1,3-bisbenzyl-2-imidazolidine-4,5-dicarboxylate ligands. The conversion of benzaldehyde is 90.9%, which is 40~50% higher than those of the other three aldehydes (4-methylbenzaldehyde, p-methoxybenzaldehyde and 3-chlorobenzaldehyde), so the Cd(II) coordination polymer catalyst shows better catalytic activity for the coupling reaction of benzaldehyde, phenylacetylene, and piperidine than the other three aldehydes.

Abstract Thermal management and simulation are becoming increasingly important in many areas of engineering applications. There are three cooling routes for thermal management, namely thermal conduction, thermal convection and thermal radiation, among which the first two approaches have been widely studied and applied, while the radiation cooling has not yet attracted much attention in terrestrial environment because it usually contributes less to the total amount of thermal dissipation. Thus the simulation method for radiation cooling was also seldom noticed. The traditional way to simulate the radiation cooling is to solve the thermal conduction equation with an approximate radiation boundary condition, which neglects the wavelength and angular dependence of the emissivity of the object surface. In this paper, we combine the heat conduction equation with a rigorous radiation boundary condition discretized by the finite-element time-domain method to simulate the radiation cooling accurately and flexibly. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the accuracy, flexibilities and potential applications of the proposed method. The proposed numerical model can provide a powerful tool to gain deep physical insight and optimize the physical design of radiation cooling.

Abstract Recent evidence has shown that afterimage perception and completion are amenable to contextual information. It has previously been shown that placing an outline around part of the afterimage can induce colors in areas that were uncolored. A thorough explanation of this effect is lacking, although this color completion was thought to be due to a diffusion-like filling-in of the uncolored patch with colors of the surrounding areas. Here, we show that an important step in visual completion is the decomposition of the visual scene into different depth layers, i.e. scission, which, we show, is guided by transparency cues in the van Lier et al. study. In three experiments, we show that when decomposition is prevented, color completion does not occur. We also show that this decomposition can induce color completion in real images. These results demonstrate that transparency information plays an important role in determining visual color completion processes.

Abstract This study investigated the effects of different heat treatments, namely boiling, microwaving and pressure cooking, on the reduced ascorbic acid content and antioxidant activity in Momordica charantia extracts. The total antioxidant activity of M. charantia extracts was determined by ferric reducing-antioxidant power and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assays. The reduced ascorbic acid content was estimated by ferric reducing-antioxidant power-ascorbic acid assay and confirmed by high performance liquid chromatography. Regardless of the cooking method, all cooked M. charantia extracts had significantly (p < 0.05) higher total antioxidant activity, radical scavenging potency and reduced ascorbic acid content than the uncooked sample. The decreasing order of reduced ascorbic acid in M. charantia was as follows: microwaved > boiled > pressure-cooked > uncooked. The reduced ascorbic acid in M. charantia strongly correlated with the total antioxidant activity (r = 0.958, p < 0.05) and radical scavenging potency (r= 0.951, p < 0.05). The principle component analysis showed that 87% of the variation in the antioxidant values of M. charantia extracts was attributed to the different cooking methods. Heat treatment either by boiling or microwaving for a short period of time (10 minutes) improved the reduced ascorbic acid content in the M. charantia extract. This study showed that the reduced ascorbic acid could be retained under high temperature and pressure in M. charantia extracts.

In this paper, the Adaptive Modified Characteristic Basis Function Method (AMCBFM) is proposed for quickly simulating electromagnetic scattering from a one-dimensional perfectly electric conductor (PEC) rough surface. Similar to the traditional characteristic basis function method (CBFM), Foldy-Lax multiple scattering equations are applied in order to construct the characteristic basis functions (CBFs). However, the CBFs of the AMCBFM are different from those of the CBFM. In the AMCBFM, the coefficients of the CBFs are first defined. Then, the coefficients and the CBFs are used to structure the total current, which is used to represent the induced current along the rough surface. Moreover, a current criterion is defined to adaptively halt the order of the CBFs. The validity and efficiency of the AMCBFM are assessed by comparing the numerical results of the AMCBFM with the method of moments (MoM). The AMCBFM can effectively reduce the size of the matrix, and it costs less than half the CPU time used by the MoM. Moreover, by comparing it with the traditional CBFM, the AMCBFM can guarantee the accuracy, reduce the number of iterations, and achieve better convergence performance than the CBFM does. The second order of the CBFs is set in the CBFM. Additionally, the first order of the CBFs of the AMCBFM alone is sufficient for this result.
