Abstract

Bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) non-fullerene organic solar cells prepared from sequentially deposited donor and acceptor layers (sq-BHJ) have recently been promising to be highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and compatible with large area and roll-to-toll fabrication. However, the related photophysics at donor-acceptor interface and the vertical heterogeneity of donor-acceptor distribution, critical for exciton dissociation and device performance, are largely unexplored. Herein, steady-state and time-resolved optical and electrical techniques are employed to characterize the interfacial trap states. Correlation with the luminescent efficiency of interfacial states and its non-radiative recombination, interfacial trap states are characterized to be about 50% more populated in the sq-BHJ than as-cast BHJ (c-BHJ), which probably limits the device voltage output. Cross-sectional energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy depth profiling directly vizualize the donor-acceptor vertical stratification with a precision of 1-2 nm. From the proposed "needle" model, the high exciton dissociation efficiency is rationalized. Our study highlights the promise of sequential deposition to fabricate efficient solar cells, and points towards improving the voltage output and overall device performance via eliminating interfacial trap states.

Abstract

Energy level diagrams in organic electronic devices play a crucial role in device performance and interpretation of device physics. In the case of organic solar cells, it has become routine to estimate the photovoltaic gap of the donor:acceptor blend using the energy values measured on the individual blend components, resulting in a poor agreement with the corresponding open-circuit voltage of the device. To address this issue, we developed a method that allows a direct visualisation of the vertical energetic landscape in the blend, obtained by combining ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and argon cluster etching. We investigate both model and high-performance photovoltaic systems and demonstrate that the resulting photovoltaic gaps are in close agreement with the measured CT energies and open-circuit voltages. Furthermore, we show that this method allows us to study the evolution of the energetic landscape upon environmental degradation, critically important for understanding degradation mechanisms and development of mitigation strategies.

Abstract

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have potential applications in wearable electronics as well as in-door and building-integrated photovoltaics, owing to features such as low-temperature processing, light weight and flexibility, and synthetic versatility. Due to the development of new materials systems with unique optoelectronic properties, a breakthrough in the OSC performance has been achieved. However, knowledge of the underlying mechanism still lags behind. Such understanding is essential for further development of organic photovoltaics. The needed comprehensive investigation mainly comes from studying the carrier dynamics on promising OSC systems. To this aim, the used tool kits, ultrafast spectroscopic methods, are the subject of this thesis. First three chapters of the thesis present the general paradigm of photoconversion in OSCs and outlines the key models used to describe their photovoltaic performance. The ability of OSCs to generate electrical current in response to absorbing sunlight greatly differs, depending on materials and the following device fabrication methods. In the device operation, the performance is related to the conversion efficiency from molecular excited states into charge carriers. Chapter 2 presents a historical review of different material combination, device architecture and key processes relevant for solar cell performance. This leads to the key questions that this thesis addresses: which molecular properties are most important for photoconversion in OSCs? How much energy is required to convert from molecular excited states to free charges? What are the optimal preparation procedure and microstructure of OSC devices? Chapter 3 gives an overview of spectroscopic tools used to address these questions. Chapters 4 to 8 target above questions in application to different material systems, from the ‘classical’ broadly studied polythiophene-fullerene blends to the high-performance OSC devices based on non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). Firstly, the rate of exciton dissociation is studied in state-of-the-art organic blends with NFAs. The charge generation is found to be slow (ps), in sharp contrast with the ultrafast timescales in traditional blends based on fullerene acceptors. Secondly, a new technique is developed, namely temperature-dependent pump-push photocurrent spectroscopy, which is able to measure the strength of interaction between charges in working OSCs. This technique is applied to research which factors govern the dissociation of molecular excited states in fullerene-based blends. Thirdly, recombination processes are studied using a set of ultrafast techniques, focusing on their effect on device performance, and the dependence on processing conditions and used materials. Finally, a new method ‘via sequential deposition’ is demonstrated for fabrication of efficient NFA-based devices. We discuss the properties of OSCs fabricated by this method and the potential for its commercialisation.

Abstract

Perovskite-based optoelectronic devices have gained significant attention due to their remarkable performance and low processing cost, particularly for solar cells. However, for perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs), non-radiative charge carrier recombination has limited electroluminescence (EL) efficiency. Here we demonstrate perovskite-polymer bulk heterostructure LEDs exhibiting record-high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) exceeding 20%, and an EL half-life of 46 hours under continuous operation. This performance is achieved with an emissive layer comprising quasi-2D and 3D perovskites and an insulating polymer. Transient optical spectroscopy reveals that photogenerated excitations at the quasi-2D perovskite component migrate to lower-energy sites within 1 ps. The dominant component of the photoluminescence (PL) is primarily bimolecular and is characteristic of the 3D regions. From PL quantum efficiency and transient kinetics of the emissive layer with/without charge-transport contacts, we find non-radiative recombination pathways to be effectively eliminated. Light outcoupling from planar LEDs, as used in OLED displays, generally limits EQE to 20-30%, and we model our reported EL efficiency of over 20% in the forward direction to indicate the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) to be close to 100%. Together with the low drive voltages needed to achieve useful photon fluxes (2-3 V for 0.1-1 mA/cm2), these results establish that perovskite-based LEDs have significant potential for light-emission applications.

6. Fresnel Diffraction Model for Laser Dazzling Spots of Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor Cameras.

Abstract

Laser dazzling on complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors is an effective method in optoelectronic countermeasures. However, previous research mainly focused on the laser dazzling under far fields, with limited studies on situations that the far-field conditions were not satisfied. In this paper, we established a Fresnel diffraction model of laser dazzling on a CMOS by combining experiments and simulations. We calculated that the laser power density and the area of saturated pixels on the detector exhibit a linear relationship with a slope of 0.64 in a log-log plot. In the experiment, we found that the back side illumination (BSI-CMOS) matched the simulations, with an error margin of 3%, while the front side illumination (FSI-CMOS) slightly mismatched the simulations, with an error margin of 14%. We also found that the full-screen saturation threshold for the BSI-CMOS was 25% higher than the FSI-CMOS. Our work demonstrates the applicability of the Fresnel diffraction model for BSI-CMOS, which provides a valuable reference for studying laser dazzling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The generation, control and transfer of triplet excitons in molecular and hybrid systems is of great interest owing to their long lifetime and diffusion length in both solid-state and solution phase systems, and to their applications in light emission.sup.1, optoelectronics.sup.2,3, photon frequency conversion.sup.4,5 and photocatalysis.sup.6,7. Molecular triplet excitons (bound electron-hole pairs) are 'dark states' because of the forbidden nature of the direct optical transition between the spin-zero ground state and the spin-one triplet levels.sup.8. Hence, triplet dynamics are conventionally controlled through heavy-metal-based spin-orbit coupling.sup.9-11 or tuning of the singlet-triplet energy splitting.sup.12,13 via molecular design. Both these methods place constraints on the range of properties that can be modified and the molecular structures that can be used. Here we demonstrate that it is possible to control triplet dynamics by coupling organic molecules to lanthanide-doped inorganic insulating nanoparticles. This allows the classically forbidden transitions from the ground-state singlet to excited-state triplets to gain oscillator strength, enabling triplets to be directly generated on molecules via photon absorption. Photogenerated singlet excitons can be converted to triplet excitons on sub-10-picosecond timescales with unity efficiency by intersystem crossing. Triplet exciton states of the molecules can undergo energy transfer to the lanthanide ions with unity efficiency, which allows us to achieve luminescent harvesting of the dark triplet excitons. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the triplet excitons generated in the lanthanide nanoparticle-molecule hybrid systems by near-infrared photoexcitation can undergo efficient upconversion via a lanthanide-triplet excitation fusion process: this process enables endothermic upconversion and allows efficient upconversion from near-infrared to visible frequencies in the solid state. These results provide a new way to control triplet excitons, which is essential for many fields of optoelectronic and biomedical research. Abstract

A photonic lantern is a coherent beam combination device that can increase the fiber laser brightness by adaptively controlling the input light properties, such as phase, intensity, and polarization. However, the control effect is closely related to the initial optical field, which affects the convergence speed to obtain the optimum solutions. In this work, we propose a novel control strategy using the prior structural information of the photonic lantern. Taking a 6 × 1 photonic lantern as an example, we calculate the transmission matrix of the photonic lantern. The initial optical field conditions, fed as the control inputs, for various mode outputs can be obtained. Compared with the random and equal amplitude control methods, the preset method from the transmission matrix presents a significant improvement of the desired mode content. Our optimization method is generally useful for adaptive control systems to improve their performance, taking advantage of their own structural information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Boron-nitrogen substitutions in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have a strong impact on the optical properties of the molecules due to a significantly more heterogeneous electron distribution. However, besides these single-molecule properties, the observed optical properties of PAHs critically depend on the degree of intermolecular interactions such as ��-��-stacking, dipolar interactions, or the formation of dimers in the excited state. Pyrene is the most prominent example showing the latter as it exhibits a broadened and strongly bathochromically shifted emission band at high concentrations in solution compared to the respective monomers. In the solid state, the impact of intermolecular interactions is even higher as it determines the crystal packing crucially. In this work, a thiophene-flanked BN-pyrene (BNP) was synthesized and compared with its all-carbon analogue (CCP) in solution and in the solid state by means of crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. In solution, PL spectroscopy revealed the solvent-dependent presence of excimers of CCP at high concentrations. In contrast, no excimers were found in BNP. Clear differences were also observed in the single-crystal packing motifs. While CCP revealed overlapped pyrene planes with centroid distances in the range of classical ��-stacking interactions, the BNP scaffolds were displaced and significantly more spatially separated.

Abstract

Recent progress in organic photovoltaics (OPVs) has been enabled by optimization of the energetic driving force for charge separation, and thus maximization of open-circuit voltage, using non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) materials. In spite of this, the carrier dynamics and relative energies of the key states controlling the photophysics of these systems are still under debate. Herein, we report an in-depth ultrafast spectroscopic study of a representative OPV system based on a polymer donor PffBT4T-2OD and a small-molecule NFA EH-IDTBR. Global analysis of the transient absorption data reveals efficient energy transfer between donor and acceptor molecules. The extracted kinetics suggest that slow (∼15 ps) generation of charge carriers is followed by significant geminate recombination. This contrasts with the "reference" PffBT4T-2OD:PC71BM system where bimolecular recombination dominates. Using temperature-dependent pump-push-photocurrent spectroscopy, we estimate the activation energy for the dissociation of bound charge-transfer states in PffBT4T-2OD:EH-IDTBR to be 100 ± 6 meV. We also observe an additional activation energy of 14 ± 7 meV, which we assign to the de-trapping of mobile carriers. Abstract

With the widespread application of distributed power generation, the stability of the power grid is severely affected. In order to simulate the characteristics of large inertia and large damping of traditional synchronous motors, virtual synchronous generator control technology was born. However, fixed parameters cannot take into account the steady state and dynamic characteristics of the system. Aiming at this deficiency, this paper proposes an adaptive control strategy for moment of inertia and damping coefficient. First, the mathematical model of the virtual synchronous generator is established, and the control block diagram of the VSG closed-loop system is established. The influence of the moment of inertia and the damping coefficient on the steady state performance and dynamic performance of the system is analyzed. This paper proposes a control strategy that dynamically adjusts the virtual moment of inertia and damping coefficient. This control strategy can ensure the stability of the system and quickly recover when the angular velocity deviation is too large, and reduce the deviation. Finally, in Matlab/Simulink built a simulation model to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control strategy over fixed parameter control parameters.

The access of large-scale distributed generation (DG) to the active distribution network has a great influence on the power flow, node voltage and network loss of the distribution network. In this paper, in order to improve the operation level and economic performance of the active distribution network, the distributed power supply reactive power output and load reduction are used as control variables to establish a multi-objective optimization model with the total network loss, voltage deviation and load reduction cost as the objective function. The voltage of each node, system network loss, load reduction cost and their corresponding control variables are calculated by improved simulated annealing multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm. Finally, the IEEE33 node system is used for example verification, the results show that the mathematical model can achieve coordinated control of voltage, reduce network loss and meet the requirements of actual power grid operation.
