Nicotine is the primary addictive component of cigarette smoke and is associated with various smoking-related diseases. However, recent research has revealed its broader cognitive-enhancing and anti-inflammatory properties, suggesting its potential therapeutic applications in several conditions. This review aims to examine the double-edged nature of nicotine, encompassing its positive and negative effects. We provide a concise overview of the physiochemical properties and pharmacology of nicotine, including insights into nicotine receptors. Therefore, the article is divided into two main sections: toxicity and therapeutic potential. We comprehensively explored nicotine-related diseases, focusing on specific signaling pathways and the underlying mechanisms that contribute to its effects. Furthermore, we addressed the current research challenges and future development perspectives. This review aims to inspire future researchers to explore the full medical potential of nicotine, which holds significant promise for the clinical management of specific diseases.

This study explores the deposition of an Fe-MnCrSi/TiC coating on 45 steel surfaces using high-velocity arc spraying technology, examining the microstructure and hot corrosion behavior of the resultant layer. The microstructure of the FeMnCrSi/TiC coating primarily consists of an α-Fe (BCC) solid solution, composed of Fe, Mn, Cr, Si, C, and other elements, with a minor presence of β-Fe (FCC) solid-solution phase and unmelted TiC particles. Following 100 h of cyclic 900 °C hot corrosion, Mn on the coating surface preferentially oxidizes, forming a manganese-rich oxide layer. This process reduces the oxygen partial pressure (O2) within the coating, prompting the formation of a dense Cr2O3 layer on the inner side of the oxide layer. Concurrently, the rapid diffusion of Mn and Cr elements triggers the generation of Mn- and Cr-deficient regions at the metal/oxide layer interface, inducing the transformation of the coated metal primary matrix from an FCC + BCC dual phase to an α-Fe (BCC) single phase. After the reaction, the hot corrosion weight gain of the coating reached 12.43 mg/cm2, approximately one-fourteenth of the weight gain of the 45 steel substrates. This weight gain adheres to the parabolic law, suggesting that the FeMnCrSi/TiC coating exhibits excellent corrosion resistance under the given conditions.

Quick water seepage in sandy soils results in a serious restriction for ecological restoration, becoming a worldwide urgent research issue in arid areas. Search for practical solutions are focused on reserving the limited rainfall into topsoil layer to meet plant water demand. Based on fieldwork, this study evaluates the blocking effects of Pisha sandstone on soil water leakage, by inserting sandstone layers in the different soil depths (10–15 cm, 20–25 cm, 30–35 cm), which act as isolation layers within the sandy soil. Results showed that the inserted Pisha sandstone layers significantly decreased the soil water infiltration rates at the different stages and cumulative infiltration. The inserted sandstone layer at the depth of 10–15 cm presented the highest permeability resistance, and its initial infiltration rate, stable infiltration rate and average infiltration rate decreased by 102.42 mm h−1, 144.30 mm h−1 and 132.79 mm h−1, respectively. Meanwhile, the soil water content in the 5–10, 20–25, and 30–35 cm soil layers increased by 2.17%, 2.20%, and 1.37%, respectively, due to the inserted Pisha sandstones. This experimental study proves that the insertion of Pisha sandstones effectively hinders the downward penetration of soil water in sandy soil. These findings provide a new alternative for an effective solution of the fast water leakage problem of sandy land.

Understanding the spatiotemporal pattern of precipitation concentration is important in the water cycle under changing environments. In this study, the daily precipitation concentration index in the Yangtze River Delta in China is calculated based on the Lorenz curves obtained from the observed data of 36 meteorological stations from 1960 to 2017, and spatiotemporal pattern variations and their possible causes are investigated. The driving forces of elevation, SUNSPOT, El Niño-Antarctic Oscillation, Pacific Decade Oscillation, and Arctic Oscillation are detected with correlation and wavelet analysis. Results show that, the daily precipitation concentration index ranges from 0.55 to 0.62 during the study period, 22 of 36 stations (accounting for 61%) show increasing trends, while three stations increase significantly at the 95% significant level. Relationship analysis indicates that the daily precipitation concentration shows a slightly negative correlation with elevation, while the relationships with SUNSPOT, El Niño-Antarctic Oscillation, Pacific Decade Oscillation, and Arctic Oscillation are complicated and diverse, there are different correlations and significance levels in different years. Further analysis shows that SUNSPOT is significantly correlated with El Niño-Antarctic Oscillation, Pacific Decade Oscillation, and Arctic Oscillation, which suggests that SUNSPOT may be an important factor that drives the changes of the three large-scale atmosphere circulation factors and causes precipitation concentration changing indirectly. These results provide further understanding of precipitation variations, which is meaningful for regional flood risk management under climate change. There has been growing interest in applying the DEM (discrete element method) to study the charging and burden distribution in a BF (blast furnace). In practice, the real particles in a BF are non-spherical. However, spherical particles have mostly been used in previous DEM investigations. Furthermore, various particle models have been developed to describe non-spherical particles. However, the effects of using different particle models on particle behavior in a BF are still unclear. Therefore, a comparative study of how the particle shape model impacts the burden charging in a BF was conducted. Specifically, the DEM using a multi-sphere model, polyhedral model, and super-ellipsoid model was first established. Then, experiments and DEM simulations of the charging and burden distribution of non-spherical quartz sand particles in a lab-scale bell-less top BF were performed. The results indicated that the number of sub-spheres, the principle of creating the particle for multi-spheres, the number of planes for polyhedrons, and the shape indices for super-ellipsoids could all affect the accuracy and efficiency. Moreover, applying the super-ellipsoid model and multi-sphere model could achieve reasonable accuracy and efficiency, with the highest simulation accuracy for the polyhedral model but at the cost of a rather heavy computational burden.

PurposeTo investigate the knowledge and practices regarding diabetic retinopathy (DR) among diabetic patients included in a community-based primary health system (CBPHS) in China.MethodsDiabetic patients aged 18 years and above registered in the CBPHS in Yueqing city, Zhejiang province were recruited. Information obtained by questionnaire included: demographic and socioeconomic status, knowledge about DR, and ocular and medical history. The primary outcome was whether the participant knew that DM can affect the eyes, defined according to the question: "Do you know diabetes mellitus (DM) can affect eyes? (yes or no)". A knowledge score was calculated based on the responses to seven questions, with 1 point awarded for a correct response and 0 points for an incorrect or uncertain answer.ResultsA total of 1972 diabetic patients were included in the study with an average age of 65.2±10.8 years, 45.7% were male. One thousand two hundred and nineteen patients (61.8%) knew that DM can affect the eyes. Significant differences in age, education, income status, insurance covering eye care, fasting blood glucose, duration of DM, history of hypertension existed between subjects who knew and those who did not know that DM can affect the eyes (PConclusionsThe knowledge toward DR among DM patients were still low within the chronic disease management system in eastern China. Routine ophthalmic screening, health care promotions, and educational programs should be emphasized and implemented for better DR prevention and management.

Spatial point-pattern analysis can give insights to the underlying processes of patch succession and restoration. It is unclear whether inter-shrub competition determines patch succession. In this paper, we assessed the spatial patterns along patch succession using spatial statistics such as univariate and bivariate O-ring statistics, in the water-wind erosion crisscross region in semi-arid ecosystems of the Loess Plateau. Point pattern analysis results showed that there were no significant difference in three positions of the slope. The small and middle shrub patches were aggregatedly distributed in small spatial scale, meanwhile the large shrub patches were regularly distributed and dead shrub patches were randomly distributed. The small shrub patches were respectively aggregated to the middle and large patches at fine scales. Competition-induced regular distribution or negative relationship becomes obvious when analyzing the shift towards less aggregated perceptible effect of competition, a time component should always be included in spatial pattern-based inference of competition. Our results revealed that regular, clumped and random shrub patch patterns could occur, pending on size of shrub patches, and the shrub patches are distributed in different ways and they can present variant spatial point pattern features along patch size succession.

Abstract Desertification is one of the major issues in global environmental change, and it is of great concern to scientists and policy‐makers in the world. Litter crusts can be of great importance for the restoration and management of desert ecosystems. The formation of litter crusts and its ecological effects on desert surface microhabitats were studied in a wind–water erosion crisscross desert region. It was found that litter crusts, especially the four‐year litter crusts, exhibited a better soil storage capacity and temperature regulating ability when compared to the bare land, biocrusts, and two‐year litter crusts; the four‐year litter crusts significantly increased soil total porosity, soil water storage, and soil organic carbon content, but reduced soil bulk density. Furthermore, species richness, coverage, and plant height of seedlings in litter crusts were significantly greater than those in bare land and biocrusts. Although the bare land had the greatest total number of seedlings, the survival rate of seedlings was lowest there. Our findings revealed that litter crusts had significantly positive effects on soil moisture, soil temperature, soil physicochemical properties, and seedling establishment. The multifunctional ecological effects of litter crusts are more positive than lichen‐ and moss‐dominated biocrusts in desert ecosystems.

The two indices of the supply level of urban public transport facilities resource and the public transport-private cars traveling time ratio are used to evaluate the public transport accessibility in urban networks. An evaluation method for urban public transport facilities resource supply is proposed based on accessibility by taking Shenzhen as the research area and by using the London PTAL evaluation system. The method takes into account the walking time outside the public transit station and the spatial layout of public transit stations, reflects regional development opportunity, and can reflect regional differences regarding public transport facilities resources in various spatial scales. This paper evaluates the relative service competiveness of public transports and private cars in the entire travel of individuals based on the public transport-private cars travelling time ratio, which lays a foundation to judge the service level of public transport and to make a purpose-specific transportation policy and public transport development scheme.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) has strong stress resistance, high nutritional value, good palatability for cattle, high yield and a drought tolerance mechanism, but long-term planting leads to soil desiccation. This research was carried out to examine the soil water conditions of alfalfa pastures with different planted ages, and determine the optimum time for alfalfa rotation in a plateau area of a sub-alpine monsoon climate. Soil water depletion, soil compaction and vegetation characteristics of alfalfa pastures of different ages (i.e., two, four and seven years) were assayed and compared with those of a cornfield which served as the control crop. Three 20 × 20 m plots and five random quadrats per plot were established at each field. Soil water contents at 0⁻400 cm depth and plant biomass were compared among different vegetation types, soil transects and planting years. The results showed that at the 250⁻400 cm depth, the soil water storage of the four- and seven-year-old alfalfa pastures was much lower than in the two-year-old alfalfa pasture and in the cornfield. Moreover, the degree of soil water storage deficit of the four- and seven-year-old alfalfa pastures was much higher than in the other fields. Soil compaction of alfalfa pastures increased with increasing planting age and reached a peak value in the seven-year-old alfalfa pasture. The highest above-ground biomass was observed in the four-year-old alpine alfalfa pasture. Thus, the best cultivation period for alfalfa pastures was four years from the perspective of higher yield and lower soil water consumption in pastoral sub-alpine areas. This study provided a basis for sustainable alfalfa pasture cultivation, timely harvest, rotation and water management measures to be implemented in alpine grazing lands.
