CNTs are effectively taken up by many different cell types through several mechanisms. CNTs have acted as carriers of anticancer molecules (including docetaxel (DTX), doxorubicin (DOX), methotrexate (MTX), paclitaxel (PTX), and gemcitabine (GEM)), anti-inflammatory drugs, osteogenic dexamethasone (DEX) steroids, etc. In addition, the unique optical properties of CNTs have led to their use in a number of platforms for improved photo-therapy. Further, the easy surface functionalization of CNTs has prompted their use to deliver different genes, such as plasmid DNA (PDNA), micro-RNA (miRNA), and small interfering RNA (siRNA) as gene delivery vectors for various diseases such as cancers. However, despite all of these promises, the most important continuous concerns raised by scientists reside in CNT nanotoxicology and the environmental effects of CNTs, mostly because of their non-biodegradable state. Despite a lack of widespread FDA approval, CNTs have been studied for decades and plenty of in vivo and in vitro reports have been published, which are reviewed here. Lastly, this review covers the future research necessary for the field of CNT medicine to grow even further. Keywords: drug delivery, gene delivery, carbon nanotube, precision medicine

Non-Euclidean property of graph structures has faced interesting challenges when deep learning methods are applied. Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) can be regarded as one of the successful approaches to classification tasks on graph data, although the structure of this approach limits its performance. In this work, a novel representation learning approach is introduced based on spectral convolutions on graph-structured data in a semisupervised learning setting. Our proposed method, COnvOlving cLiques (COOL), is constructed as a neighborhood aggregation approach for learning node representations using established GCN architectures. This approach relies on aggregating local information by finding maximal cliques. Unlike the existing graph neural networks which follow a traditional neighborhood averaging scheme, COOL allows for aggregation of densely connected neighboring nodes of potentially differing locality. This leads to substantial improvements on multiple transductive node classification tasks.

25 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas, Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele., This work was funded by a grant (EADB) from the EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research. INSERM UMR1167 is also funded by the INSERM, Institut Pasteur de Lille, Lille Métropole Communauté Urbaine and French government’s LABEX DISTALZ program (development of innovative strategies for a transdisciplinary approach to AD). Graph representation learning is an effective tool for facilitating graph analysis with machine learning methods. Most GNNs, including Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN), Graph Recurrent Neural Networks (GRNN), and Graph Auto-Encoders (GAE), employ vectors to represent nodes in a deterministic way without exploiting the uncertainty in hidden variables. Deep generative models are combined with GAE in the Variational Graph Auto-Encoder (VGAE) framework to address this issue. While traditional VGAE-based methods can capture hidden and hierarchical dependencies in latent spaces, they are limited by the data’s multimodality. Here, we propose the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to model the prior distribution in VGAE. Furthermore, an adversarial regularization is incorporated into the proposed approach to ensure the fruitful impact of the latent representations on the results. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed method on clustering and link prediction tasks. Our experimental results on real datasets show remarkable performance compared to state-of-the-art methods.

- Abstract
Understanding the genomic basis of memory processes may help in combating neurodegenerative disorders. Hence, we examined the associations of common genetic variants with verbal short-term memory and verbal learning in adults without dementia or stroke (N = 53,637). We identified novel loci in the intronic region of CDH18, and at 13q21 and 3p21.1, as well as an expected signal in the APOE/APOC1/TOMM40 region. These results replicated in an independent sample. Functional and bioinformatic analyses supported many of these loci and further implicated POC1. We showed that polygenic score for verbal learning associated with brain activation in right parieto-occipital region during working memory task. Finally, we showed genetic correlations of these memory traits with several neurocognitive and health outcomes. Our findings suggest a role of several genomic loci in verbal memory processes.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Vaccine efficiency has a significant role in the public perception of vaccination. The current study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines (AZD-1222, Sputnik-V, Sinopharm, and Covaxin) and the effect of gender on vaccine efficacy. We evaluated the efficacy of these vaccines among 214 health care employees in Iran. Blood samples were taken from all participants on day 0 and 14 days after the second dose. Humoral responses were evaluated by the PT-SARS-CoV-2-Neutralizing-Ab-96. RESULTS: The frequency of immunized individuals in the Sputnik V and AZD-1222 groups was 91% and 86%, respectively. This rate was 61% and 67% for Sinopharm and Covaxin vaccines. A comparison of the results obtained from the effectiveness of the vaccines between female and male groups did not demonstrate a significant difference. CONCLUSION: According to the results, Sputnik V and AZD-1222 vaccines were more effective than Sinopharm and Covaxin vaccines. Moreover, the effectiveness of these vaccines is not related to gender.

- Abstract
Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele. © 2022. The Author(s).

Recent advances in DNA based technology have made available a wide range of molecular characteristics for taxonomic and systematic studies of malaria vectors. One region of the anopheline mosquito genome that has received particular attention is the ribosomal DNA. In this study, mosquitoes of the Anopheles superpictus collected from a wide geographical distribution of Iran were investigated for sequence variation within the ribosomal DNA ITS2. Two morphological forms of this species were identified based on adult female palpi and compared to genotypes identified by the rDNA ITS2 sequences. Sequence analysis of the ITS2 within and between populations identified three genotypes designated as X, Y, and Z. Genotype X occurred in north, west, south, and central regions whereas genotypes Y and Z were found sympatric in Baluchistan in southeast corner of the country. Totally 127 mutations occurred in the 518 bp region sequenced. The rate of genetic variation was 24.52% in which respectively 0.2%, 0.77% and 23.55% corresponded to 28S, 5.8S, and ITS2 regions. The length of ITS2 region was varied between populations; one group had 357 and other one 378 bp. These genotypes appeared to be evolving independently suggesting the possibility of cryptic species within taxon. This study is the first comparative study on morphological and genetic characteristics of An. superpictus and for the first time in the world reporting this taxon as a species complex.

Some factors such as: aging, obesity, hypoactivity, stress, urbanization, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, multiple pregnancies, smoking and so forth, are important factors that are always argued whether in disease production or in increasing morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. In a descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational study, we looked for some important risk factors in 780 diabetic patients in Yazd city. The main objective in this study was to identifying the at risk cases. In this study, 54% of understudied patients were obese, 52.3% hypoactive, 80.7% urbanized, 21.5% smokers and approximately 11% were continiously or occasional alcohol users. 85% of all patients had no habit to sport, and the mean of their last fast blood sugar was significantly upper than those who had continiously physical exercises (P=0.01). Majority of understudied women (65.3%) had experienced 6 or more pregnancies during their life, and the last mean blood sugar in these patients was significantly upper than those with

- Abstract
Graph representation learning is an effective method to represent graph data in a low dimensional space, which facilitates graph analytic tasks. The existing graph representation learning algorithms suffer from certain constraints. Random walk based methods and graph convolutional neural networks, tend to capture graph local information and fail to preserve global structural properties of graphs. We present MAPPING (Manifold APproximation and Projection by maximizINg Graph information), an unsupervised deep efficient method for learning node representations, which is capable of synchronously capturing both local and global structural information of graphs. In line with applying graph convolutional networks to construct initial representation, the proposed approach employs an information maximization process to attain representations to capture global graph structures. Furthermore, in order to preserve graph local information, we extend a novel manifold learning technique to the field of graph learning. The output of MAPPING can be easily exploited by downstream machine learning models on graphs. We demonstrate our competitive performance on three citation benchmarks. Our approach outperforms the baseline methods significantly.

- Abstract

This paper investigates the resultant strength and ductility behavior when randomly distributed palm fibers are used to reinforce silty-sand soils. The composite soils were tested under laboratory conditions and examined for unconfined compression strength (UCS), California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and compaction test. The results indicated that; the maximum and residual strengths, orientation of surface failures, ductility and the stress-strain relationship of the specimens were substantially affected by the inclusion of palm fibers. A significant result was the determination that the sliding failure strength controlled the failure of the specimens rather than the rupture failure strength. Overall it was found that reinforced soil using palm fibers as the primary reinforcement are beneficial engineering materials and could potentially be used more often, though additional field use and testing should be carried out. Given the current concern over the environment and greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening soil through the use of natural materials (in this case palm fibers) and the promotion of the cultivation of palm groves is one way that engineers and designers can contribute to a greener earth. Add to this the fact that the date palm is one of the most cultivated tree crops in the world with a worldwide distribution of around 100 million palms distributed in 30 countries including the Middle East, Asia, Africa, North America, Mediterranean countries and Australia in a bountiful resource that is available in many places where high technology engineering practices are either not available or too expensive. The use of the date palm for soil reinforcement means that in many areas of the world there is a readily available, effective local source of material for road foundation construction. - Abstract
Cortical thickness, surface area and volumes vary with age and cognitive function, and in neurological and psychiatric diseases. Here we report heritability, genetic correlations and genome-wide associations of these cortical measures across the whole cortex, and in 34 anatomically predefined regions. Our discovery sample comprises 22,824 individuals from 20 cohorts within the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) consortium and the UK Biobank. We identify genetic heterogeneity between cortical measures and brain regions, and 160 genome-wide significant associations pointing to wnt/β-catenin, TGF-β and sonic hedgehog pathways. There is enrichment for genes involved in anthropometric traits, hindbrain development, vascular and neurodegenerative disease and psychiatric conditions. These data are a rich resource for studies of the biological mechanisms behind cortical development and aging.

This research is aimed to address the optimization of a product portfolio problem under uncertainty using the principles of financial portfolios theory. Since the success of a product portfolio is dependent on strategic decision making as well as on future changes of return, the return is best considered when it is deemed an uncertain parameter. The specific innovation of this research is the use of a robust optimization approach and providing an exact solution algorithm based on the model of Bertsimas and Sim. Given the uncertainty of the returns, the product portfolio model was developed based on the robust counterpart formulation of Bertsimas and Sim. An exact solution algorithm was also formulated to reduce the solution time. The results obtained by applying the model to a real case study of the dairy industry in Iran showed that increasing the confidence level would decrease total returns of the portfolio and increase its total risk. A comparison between the proposed algorithm and similar methods showed that, on average, it would make 3% improvement in the solution time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Probiotics are defined as live micro-organisms conferring a health benefit on the host. Although most probiotics are bacteria, some yeasts such as Saccharomyces and Kluyveromyces, has been found to have effective probiotic properties. The objective of this study was to isolate and identify indigenous Saccharomyces and Kluyveromyces yeast strains and to compare some probiotic characteristics between these two strains in vitro. Materials and Methods: Strains were isolated on yeast glucose chloramphenicol agar medium from 205 samples and identified by morphological, physiological and biochemical assays. The effects of different conditions such as pH and temperature on the survival and growth of the isolates were studied. In addition, resistance to acidic pH (1.5, 2, 3 and 5), pepsin and different concentrations of bile salts (1%, 3% and 5%), as well as proteolytic, lipolytic and hemolytic activity of selected isolates were assessed. Finally, the best isolates were selected for investigation of their viability in samples of dairy products. Results: 126 isolates were identified using biochemical and molecular techniques as yeast strains. Five isolates were found to have effective probiotic properties, belonging to Kluyveromyces marxianus (S97, S101 and S106) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S28, S34). These isolates were able to grow at 37°C, pH=1.5, withstand to concentration of 5% oxbile and pepsin and exhibit the proteolytic activity. The isolates of K. marxianus showed better viability in dairy (yogurt). Conclusion: In the in-vitro comparative experiments, the isolates of K. marxianus showed better probiotic potentials.

Introduction Using ionization radiation for diagnostic and treatment fields has increased worldwide dramatically. This issue causes an increase in the absorbed and collective doses in society noticeably. With regard to two main principles in radiation protection, i.e., justification and optimization, it is necessary to have imaging process with minimum dose to patients and personnel. For achieving this, it is vital to perform quality control tests regularly. On this topic, many studies have been performed and reported worldwide which show necessities and meaningfulness of QC tests. Materials and Methods In this study, Unfors Mult-O-Meter model 303 is used for surveying accuracy of kVp and time, linearity of exposure with mAs, and reproducibility of exposure. Results According to recommendations of AAPM (2002) and ICRP 103, in this study, 27% of apparatuses in accuracy of kVp, 45% in accuracy of timer, and 30% in accuracy of reproducibility were out of accepted range. Conclusion In surveyed apparatuses, both ends of operating range have large errors in therefore it is recommended that these devices should not be used in the mentioned regions. Performing strict quality control on all radioactive devices is one of the radiation protection priorities that should be done periodically .With regard to the results, repair, substitution or omition of some devices are suggested.
