Protothecosis is a rare but emerging infectious disease, caused by algae from the genus Prototheca. It presents predominantly as cutaneous lesions and poses a diagnostic challenge owing to its diverse clinical presentation. Typically, it occurs in exposed areas of the skin, associated with trauma. Diagnosis relies mainly on histopathology and culture. This article presents an elderly diabetic woman with cutaneous protothecosis from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We emphasize clinical features, histopathology, and successful treatment with itraconazole, along with a brief review of the 12 previously reported cases from Brazil.

Despite growing public, academic, and government awareness of the energy consumption issue, there is still little research on the scales and patterns of Household Electricity Consumption (HEC), particularly in developing countries such as Malaysia. Therefore, the present study examines the status of HEC using electricity consumption breakdowns, key performance indicators (KPIs) for electricity consumption and Material Flow Analysis (MFA) by showing potential electricity savings, cost savings, and emission reductions using 5-star energy efficiency appliances. This study used a face-to-face survey of 400 participants in Seremban, the capital city of Negeri Sembilan. The study found that the majority of respondents (49%) consumed about 300-600 kWh/month of electricity with an estimated cost of MYR231.80 per month. Additionally, the study found that households in flats recorded lower average electricity consumption (460.16 kWh/unit) than bungalow households (885.92 kWh/unit) due to respondents’ socio-economic status, the physical size of the houses and the number of appliances owned. The study also revealed that the average energy consumption was higher for refrigerators (9.6 kWh/day) and air conditioners (4.5 kWh/day) due to the use of large amounts of energy to maintain a steady temperature. The material flow analysis shows that energy savings were approximately 22.53%, potential cost savings were MYR12,676.15 per month, and the potential reduction emissions were about 100,759.92 kgCO2e for one month with using EEA compared to non-EEA. The present study empirically discussed the significance of HEC quantification and the opportunity for energy efficiency is critical as a solution for sustainable urban metabolism in a developing country.

Abstract Objective The first international consensus criteria for optic neuritis (ICON) were published in 2022. We applied these criteria to a prospective, global observational study of acute optic neuritis (ON). Methods We included 160 patients with a first‐ever acute ON suggestive of a demyelinating CNS disease from the Acute Optic Neuritis Network (ACON). We applied the 2022 ICON to all participants and subsequently adjusted the ICON by replacing a missing relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) or dyschromatopsia if magnetic resonance imaging pathology of the optical nerve plus optical coherence tomography abnormalities or certain biomarkers are present. Results According to the 2022 ICON, 80 (50%) patients were classified as definite ON, 12 (7%) patients were classified as possible ON, and 68 (43%) as not ON (NON). The main reasons for classification as NON were absent RAPD (52 patients, 76%) or dyschromatopsia (49 patients, 72%). Distribution of underlying ON etiologies was as follows: 78 (49%) patients had a single isolated ON, 41 (26%) patients were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, 25 (16%) patients with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody‐associated disease, and 15 (9%) with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder. The application of the adjusted ON criteria yielded a higher proportion of patients classified as ON (126 patients, 79%). Interpretation According to the 2022 ICON, almost half of the included patients in ACON did not fulfill the requirements for classification of definite or possible ON, particularly due to missing RAPD and dyschromatopsia. Thorough RAPD examination and formal color vision testing are critical to the application of the 2022 ICON.

Summary: While mitotic spindle inhibitors specifically kill proliferating tumor cells without the toxicities of microtubule poisons, resistance has limited their clinical utility. Treating glioblastomas with the spindle inhibitors ispinesib, alisertib, or volasertib creates a subpopulation of therapy induced senescent cells that resist these drugs by relying upon the anti-apoptotic and metabolic effects of activated STAT3. Furthermore, these senescent cells expand the repertoire of cells resistant to these drugs by secreting an array of factors, including TGFβ, which induce proliferating cells to exit mitosis and become quiescent—a state that also resists spindle inhibitors. Targeting STAT3 restores sensitivity to each of these drugs by depleting the senescent subpopulation and inducing quiescent cells to enter the mitotic cycle. These results support a therapeutic strategy of targeting STAT3-dependent therapy-induced senescence to enhance the efficacy of spindle inhibitors for the treatment of glioblastoma.

High-throughput phenotyping (HTP) provides new opportunities for efficiently dissecting the genetic basis of drought-adaptive traits, which is essential in current wheat breeding programs. The combined use of HTP and genome-wide association (GWAS) approaches has been useful in the assessment of complex traits such as yield, under field stress conditions including heat and drought. The aim of this study was to identify molecular markers associated with yield (YLD) in elite durum wheat that could be explained using hyperspectral indices (HSIs) under drought field conditions in Mediterranean environments in Southern Spain. The HSIs were obtained from hyperspectral imagery collected during the pre-anthesis and anthesis crop stages using an airborne platform. A panel of 536 durum wheat lines were genotyped by sequencing (GBS, DArTseq) to determine population structure, revealing a lack of genetic structure in the breeding germplasm. The material was phenotyped for YLD and 19 HSIs for six growing seasons under drought field conditions at two locations in Andalusia, in southern Spain. GWAS analysis identified 740 significant marker-trait associations (MTAs) across all the durum wheat chromosomes, several of which were common for YLD and the HSIs, and can potentially be integrated into breeding programs. Candidate gene (CG) analysis uncovered genes related to important plant processes such as photosynthesis, regulatory biological processes, and plant abiotic stress tolerance. These results are novel in that they combine high-resolution hyperspectral imaging at the field scale with GWAS analysis in wheat. They also support the use of HSIs as useful tools for identifying chromosomal regions related to the heat and drought stress response in wheat, and pave the way for the integration of field HTP in wheat breeding programs.

Hyperspectral imaging of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is required for plant phenotyping and stress detection. However, the most accurate instruments for SIF quantification, such as sub-nanometer (≤1-nm full-width at half-maximum, FWHM) airborne hyperspectral imagers, are expensive and uncommon. Previous studies have demonstrated that standard narrow-band hyperspectral imagers (i.e., 4–6-nm FWHM) are more cost-effective and can provide far-red SIF quantified at 760 nm (SIF760), which correlates strongly with precise sub-nanometer resolution measurements. Nevertheless, narrow-band SIF760 quantifications are subject to systematic overestimation owing to the influence of the spectral resolution (SR). In this study, we propose a modelling approach based on the Soil Canopy Observation, Photochemistry and Energy Fluxes (SCOPE) model with the objective of enhancing the accuracy of absolute SIF760 levels derived from standard airborne hyperspectral imagers in practical settings. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated using airborne imagery acquired from two airborne hyperspectral imagers (FWHM ≤ 0.2-nm and 5.8-nm) flown in tandem on board an aircraft that collected data from two different wheat and maize phenotyping trials. Leaf biophysical and biochemical traits were first estimated from airborne narrow-band reflectance imagery and subsequently used as SCOPE model inputs to simulate a range of top-of-canopy (TOC) radiance and SIF spectra at 1-nm FWHM. The SCOPE simulated radiance spectra were then convolved to match the spectral configuration of the narrow-band imager to compute the 5.8-nm FWHM SIF760. A site-specific model was constructed by employing the convolved 5.8-nm SR SIF760 as the independent variable and the 1-nm SR SIF760 directly simulated by SCOPE as the dependent variable. When applied to the airborne dataset, the estimated SIF760 at 1-nm SR from the standard narrow-band hyperspectral imager matched the reference sub-nanometer quantified SIF760 with root mean square error (RMSE) less than 0.5 mW/m2/nm/sr, yielding R2 = 0.93–0.95 from the two experiments. These results suggest that the proposed modelling approach enables the interpretation of SIF760 quantified using standard hyperspectral imagers of 4–6 nm FWHM for stress detection and plant physiological condition assessment.

Contact tracing of individual exposed to any infectious measles case deserves special attention when in the country the disease is mostly imported. We present the coordinated public health actions triggered after reporting a suspected measles case in an aircraft. Spanish public health authorities and airlines responded promptly to allow a rapid contact tracing. Even one secondary measles case was reported no further transmission was identified, revealing that giving PEP and appropriate information help to avoid transmission and to maintain measles elimination in Spain.

IntroductionOrganic wastes are composted to increase their plant nutritional value, but little is known about how this might alter the bacterial and archaeal community structure and their genes.MethodsCow manure was collected from three local small-scale farmers and composted under controlled conditions, while the bacterial and archaeal communities were determined using shotgun metagenomics at the onset and after 74 days of composting.ResultsThe bacterial, archaeal, methanogen, methanotrophs, methylotroph, and nitrifying community structures and their genes were affected by composting for 74 days, but the original composition of these communities determined the changes. Most of these archaeal and bacterial groups showed considerable variation after composting and between the cow manures. However, the differences in the relative abundance of their genes were much smaller compared to those of the archaeal or bacterial groups.DiscussionIt was found that composting of different cow manures did not result in similar bacterial or archaeal communities, and the changes that were found after 74 days were defined by the original populations. However, more research is necessary to determine if other composting conditions will give the same results.

The industrial revolution based on the Internet of Things brings new opportunities and challenges for enterprises' green and sustainable development. Therefore, this study explores the relationship between the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) and the Green Transformation of Enterprises (GT) based on the data of China's A-share listed companies from 2009 to 2023 using two-way fixed, mediated effect, and moderated effect models. The results show that for every unit increase in IIOT, the GT increases by 28.89 percent on average, indicating that IIOT can break down information barriers and effectively promote GT. However, after disaggregating the GT, it was found that the IIOT guided companies to implement the Symbolic Green Transformation (SGT) instead of adopting the Realistic Green Transformation (RGT). This strategic choice preference is more pronounced among firms that are larger, in energy-intensive industries, in regions with weaker environmental regulations and higher levels of development. The intermediary mechanism test proved that the IIOT can drive firms to implement comprehensive GT through paths that enhance investment attractiveness, productivity, technological innovation, and pay gaps. In particular, the masking effect reminds us that smart technology is a “double-edged sword”. The negative effects of smart technologies hinder the implementation of RGT. Further analysis reveals an inverted U-shaped relationship between IIOT and RGT preferences. In addition, in companies that focus on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance and avoid financial speculation, the dark side of intelligent technology is suppressed. The findings of this study enrich the research scope of smart technology, GT, and provide important insights for enterprises in emerging economies to rationally utilize IIOT to seek green and sustainable development under the wave of rapid development of smart technology.

The situation derived from the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and lockdowns ordered to control the pandemic led to unprecedented problems in different areas of people’s well-being. This study aimed to explore the acute effects of the first lockdown on self-perceived sleep quality, as well as the risk/protective factors that modulated this impact. The sample was composed by 1,275 respondents ranging in age from 18 to 55 years. Participants wererecruited during the COVID-19 first lockdown in Spain. They wereevaluated regarding theirself reported sleep problems before and during lockdown, as well as other areas related to the impact of lockdown (e.g., on diet, physical activity, or use of digital media), psychological states (positive and negative affect), and traits (impulsivity). Most participants (66.7%) reported a decrease in their self-perceived sleep quality during the pandemic. Correlational analyses showed that maintaining good levels of physical activity and diet quality during the pandemic were positively associated with sleep quality; furthermore, greater levels of positive affect, living in bigger homes during lockdown, and age were positively associated with sleep quality as well. On the contrary, negative affect, female sex, and the impact of the pandemic on various domains (mental health, relationship quality, personal finances, and the use of digital media) were negatively related to self-perceived sleep quality. In brief, this study supports the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on self-perceived sleep quality and provides a preliminary foundation for identifying protective and risk factors contributing to sleep quality during lockdowns and other situations of distress.

El consumo de pornografía es una práctica muy extendida. En la mayoría de casos, no conlleva consecuencia negativa alguna; no obstante, algunas personas desarrollan un patrón de consumo excesivo y problemático. Uno de los factores que aumenta el riesgo de desarrollar un uso problemático de pornografía (UPP) es el estado de ánimo disfórico (concretamente, el estado de ánimo depresivo). Asimismo, la rumiación (forma disfuncional de regulación emocional) perpetúa el malestar emocional, lo cual podría exacerbar el vínculo entre depresión y UPP. El objetivo de este estudio fue examinar si la rumiación mediaba o moderaba la relación entre depresión, frecuencia de uso de pornografía (FUP) y UPP. Con este propósito, 220 participantes entre 18-74 años completaron una batería de cuestionarios online donde se evaluaban las principales variables del estudio. La depresión tuvo un efecto directo, positivo y significativo en el UPP ( =0.96***), pero no en la FUP ( =-0.02). De igual modo, la rumiación tuvo un efecto directo, positivo y significativo en el UPP ( =0.12*), pero no en la FUP ( =0.008). En cuanto a los análisis de mediación, la rumiación no mediaba entre la depresión y el UPP ( =0.01), pero sí entre la depresión y la FUP ( =0.03*). Asimismo, la rumiación no moderó la relación entre depresión y FUP ( =0.001) ni entre depresión y UPP ( =-0.003). Estos resultados sugieren que el estado emocional modula fuertemente el consumo de pornografía (aumentando el riesgo de desarrollar un UPP), pero que la rumiación no media este vínculo ni modera su relación. El único caso en el que la rumiación desempeña un papel a la hora de explicar el nexo entre depresión y pornografía es en el caso de la FUP. Así, es posible que personas con depresión y tendencia a rumiar usen la pornografía con mayor frecuencia, pero no por ello de forma más problemática.

Introduction Oxygen is frequently prescribed in neurocritical care units. Avoiding hypoxaemia is a key objective in patients with acute brain injury (ABI). However, several studies suggest that hyperoxaemia may also be related to higher mortality and poor neurological outcomes in these patients. The evidence in this direction is still controversial due to the limited number of prospective studies, the lack of a common definition for hyperoxaemia, the heterogeneity in experimental designs and the different causes of ABI. To explore the correlation between hyperoxaemia and poor neurological outcomes and mortality in hospitalised adult patients with ABI, we will conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies and RCTs.Methods and analysis The systematic review methods have been defined according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and follow the PRISMA-Protocols structure. Studies published until June 2024 will be identified in the electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature and ClinicalTrials.gov. Retrieved records will be independently screened by four authors working in pairs, and the selected variables will be extracted from studies reporting data on the effect of ‘hyperoxaemia’ versus ‘no hyperoxaemia on neurological outcomes and mortality in hospitalised patients with ABI. We will use covariate-adjusted ORs as outcome measures when reported since they account for potential cofounders and provide a more accurate estimate of the association between hyperoxaemia and outcomes; when not available, we will use univariate ORs. If the study presents the results as relative risks, it will be considered equivalent to the OR as long as the prevalence of the condition is close to 10%. Pooled estimates of both outcomes will be calculated applying random-effects meta-analysis. Interstudy heterogeneity will be assessed using the I2 statistic; risk of bias will be assessed through Risk Of Bias In Non-Randomised Studies of Interventions, Newcastle-Ottawa or RoB2 tools. Depending on data availability, we plan to conduct subgroup analyses by ABI type (traumatic brain injury, postcardiac arrest, subarachnoid haemorrhage, intracerebral haemorrhage and ischaemic stroke), arterial partial pressure of oxygen values, study quality, study time, neurological scores and other selected clinical variables of interest.Ethics and dissemination Specific ethics approval consent is not required as this is a review of previously published anonymised data. Results of the study will be shared with the scientific community via publication in a peer-reviewed journal and presentation at relevant conferences and workshops. It will also be shared key stakeholders, such as national or international health authorities, healthcare professionals and the general population, via scientific outreach journals and research institutes’ newsletters.

La adecuación de los centros residenciales sociales a la Estrategia estatal de Desinstitucionalización requiere de una serie de cambios y transformaciones que afectan al espacio físico donde tiene lugar el día a día de las personas que lo habitan y utilizan. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar el impacto de las limitaciones arquitectónicas para las personas con discapacidad que viven en centros de carácter institucional. Para ello, utilizamos el método de análisis temático inductivo en 24 entrevistas y 2 grupos focales realizadas a un total de 45 personas de tres centros españoles (incluyendo perfiles profesionales sanitarios, técnicos, personas usuarias y familiares). Los resultados se organizan en cuatro temas principales: 1) Relación del edificio hacia el exterior; 2) Instalaciones obsoletas y problemas de mantenimiento; 3) Inseguridades derivadas; y 4) Criterios organizativos y estructurales. En definitiva, los centros analizados presentan carencias graves que limitan la autonomía de las personas con o sin discapacidad que residen o que hacen uso de ellos. Más estudios son necesarios para promover tipologías, programas funcionales y criterios de diseño basados en evidencias, alineados con políticas públicas, que fomenten la autonomía e independencia de las personas con diversidad funcional. Asimismo, es necesaria también la promoción de una mayor relación con la comunidad y el entorno circundante, y un diseño más ergonómico y saludable para todas las personas, incluido el personal trabajador de este tipo de dotaciones y equipamientos.

Abstract Feeding habits of herbivorous fishes play an important role in shaping the form and function of coastal marine ecosystems. Rabbitfishes (Siganidae) are important consumers of macroalgae on Indo‐West Pacific coral reefs. However, it is unclear how their diet varies among and within species at biogeographical scales, casting doubt on their precise functional roles across different regions. The present study assessed the inter‐ and intra‐specific diet variation of four rabbitfishes (Siganus trispilos, Siganus corallinus, Siganus virgatus and Siganus doliatus) factored by morphological relatedness among populations from Ningaloo Reef (western Australia), the Great Barrier Reef (GBR, eastern Australia) and the Yaeyama Islands (Okinawa Prefecture, Japan). Results showed that the region had a strong effect on diet, effectively reducing the expected effect of morphologic similitude. While intra‐specific differences were only significant when populations inhabited different regions; interspecific differences were not as predicted, with different morphotypes having similar diets when populations inhabited the same regions. Rabbitfishes consumed more corticated and filamentous macroalgae on the GBR, more foliose and membranous macroalgae at the Yaeyama Islands, and more leathery macroalgae at Ningaloo Reef. The findings indicate that rabbitfishes have high diet plasticity, and hence their functional role as mediators of competition between macroalgae and corals can change across biogeographic regions. Local context is therefore important when assessing the diet and functional role of herbivorous fishes. As climate change unfolds, shifts in the distribution, trophic behaviour and function of species are expected, making the study of trophic plasticity more important.

This article introduces the concept of a new curricular model that addresses these issues through the body. The Thirdspace Movement Model can be integrated in K-12 Physical Education in coordination with other models. The Thirdspace Movement Model creates an environment where students practice movements and engage in critical discourse that address embodied identity. Through movements, the model fosters; 1) self-awareness which can lead to self-identity and self-acceptance, 2) embodied movement experiences that can lead to inner peace, 3) humanization, 4) acceptance of self and others, 5) reconciliation, 6) growth in connection with others, and 7) justice. The Thirdspace Movement Model can be integrated with existing PE units or introduced as a stand-alone unit. Self-awareness and listening to the messages the body sends begins the learning experience. Students then explore and express through developmental progression and movement patterns with self and others. The experience culminates with critical dialogue activities aimed at reflecting how bodily knowing and embedded memories influence one's movements and actions.

Purpose – This study aims to determine how the most sustainable brands in Italy and Spain developed communication and awareness-raising actions during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether these companies were truly involved in raising public awareness of the pandemic. The authors specifically focus on sustainable companies, as health communication is considered to be an important corporate social responsibility task. Design/methodology/approach – To answer these questions, the authors have used data on the social media activity (Twitter and Instagram) of these brands in Spain and Italy, extracting the posts and associated hashtags that each of them has published throughout the pandemic to be processed using social network analysis and visualization techniques. Findings – The detailed analysis of both the levels of activity and the content of the messages provides interesting insights into the communication models of the companies and the influence of factors such as time, country and the specific social media platform used. Originality/value – The authors analyze the communication of the most sustainable businesses on social media during the pandemic, adopting a highly innovative approach. The particular originality of this study lies in the parallel analysis of two different countries that were simultaneously shaken by the pandemic in very similar circumstances. This study also presents a novel use of graphical representation tools in terms of companies’ behavior for health communication on social media. Objetivo – El objetivo de esta investigación es determinar cómo las marcas reconocidas como las más sostenibles en Italia y España han desarrollado acciones de comunicación durante la pandemia del Covid-19 y si estas empresas se han involucrado realmente en la sensibilización pública de la pandemia. Nos centramos específicamente en las empresas sostenibles dado que la Comunicación en Salud se considera una tarea importante de responsabilidad social corporativa. Diseño/metodología/enfoque – Para responder a estas preguntas, hemos utilizado datos de actividad en medios sociales (Twitter e Instagram) de estas marcas en España e Italia, extrayendo los posts y hashtags asociados que cada una ha publicado a lo largo de la pandemia para procesarlos usando técnicas de análisis y visualización de redes sociales. Resultados – El análisis detallado tanto de los niveles de actividad como del contenido de los mensajes permite obtener conclusiones interesantes sobre los modelos de comunicación de las empresas y la influencia de factores como el tiempo, el país y el medio social concreto utilizado. Originalidad – Analizamos la comunicación realizada por las compañías más sostenibles en medios sociales durante la pandemia, adoptando un enfoque muy innovador. La particularidad de este estudio radica en el análisis paralelo de dos países diferentes que fueron sacudidos simultáneamente por la pandemia en circunstancias muy similares.
