Objectives To determine the prevalence of penicillin susceptibility among MSSA causing bloodstream infections (BSIs) in 16 Spanish hospitals and to characterize the penicillin-susceptible MSSA (MSSA-PENS) isolates. Methods A total of 1011 Staphylococcus aureus isolates were collected from blood cultures in 16 Spanish hospitals during 2018–19 (6–12 months) and their susceptibility to 18 antimicrobials was determined. The MSSA-PENS isolates were selected and examined by PCR to determine the presence of the blaZ gene, other resistance genes and the genes lukF/lukS-PV, eta, etb and tst. The immune evasion cluster (IEC) type was also analysed. All the MSSA-PENS isolates were submitted to S. aureus protein A (spa) typing and the clonal complexes (CCs) were assigned according to their spa type. Results The prevalence of MSSA was 74.6% (754/1011) and 14.9% (151/1011) were MSSA-PENS-blaZnegative. MSSA-PENS-blaZnegative isolates (n = 151) were ascribed to 88 spa types and 11 CCs. The most frequent CCs were CC5 (35/151) and CC398 (25/151), with t002-CC5 and t571-CC398 being the most common lineages. Pan-susceptibility was identified in 117 of the 151 MSSA-PENS-blaZnegative isolates (77.5%). In the remaining isolates, erythromycin and clindamycin resistance was the most frequent resistance found, although tobramycin, ciprofloxacin, fusidic acid, mupirocin and/or tetracycline resistance was also detected. Thirty-eight MSSA-PENS-blaZnegative isolates were IEC negative and four isolates were Panton–Valentine leucocidin (‘PVL’) positive. Conclusions A high penicillin susceptibility rate was detected among MSSA, opening therapeutic opportunities for BSIs. The emergence of new successful MSSA-PENS clones could be responsible for these data. The detection among MSSA-PENS-blaZnegative isolates of the clonal lineage CC398 or the absence of an IEC raises questions about their possible animal origin, requiring further analysis.

BackgroundLivestock-associated (LA)-CC398-MRSA is closely related to pigs, being unfrequently detected in human invasive infections. CC398-MSSA is emerging in human invasive infections in some countries, but genetic and epidemiological characteristics are still scarcely reported.ObjectivesTo determine the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) CC398, both MRSA and MSSA, among blood cultures SA isolates recovered in Spanish hospitals located in regions with different pig-farming densities (PD) and characterize the recovered isolates.MethodsOne thousand twenty-two SA isolates (761 MSSA, 261 MRSA) recovered from blood cultures during 6–12 months in 17 Spanish hospitals (2018–2019) were studied. CC398 lineage identification, detection of spa-types, and antibiotic resistance, virulence and human immune evasion cluster (IEC) genes were analyzed by PCR/sequencing.ResultsForty-four CC398-MSSA isolates (4.3% of SA; 5.8% of MSSA) and 10 CC398-MRSA isolates (1% of SA; 3.8% of MRSA) were detected. Eleven spa-types were found among the CC398-MSSA isolates with t571 and t1451 the most frequent spa-types detected (75%). Most of CC398-MSSA isolates were Immune-Evasion-Cluster (IEC)-positive (88.6%), tetracycline-susceptible (95.5%) and erythromycin/clindamycin–inducible-resistant/erm(T)-positive (75%). No statistical significance was detected when the CC398-MSSA/MSSA rate was correlated to PD (pigs/km2) (p = 0.108). On the contrary, CC398-MRSA isolates were all IEC-negative, predominately spa-t011 (70%), and the CC398-MRSA/MRSA rate was significantly associated to PD (p < 0.005).ConclusionCC398-MSSA is an emerging clade in invasive infections in Spanish hospitals. CC398-MRSA (mostly t011) and CC398-MSSA (mostly t571 and t1451) show important differences, possibly suggesting divergent steps in host-adaptation evolutionary processes. While CC398-MRSA is livestock-associated (lacking IEC-system), CC398-MSSA seems to be mostly livestock-independent, carrying human-adaptation markers.

Reasons for performing study: Staphylococcus intermedius group (SIG) bacteria can colonise the nares of some animals but are also emerging pathogens in humans and animals. Objectives: To analyse SIG nasal carriage in healthy donkeys destined for food consumption in Tunisia and to characterise recovered isolates. Methods: Nasal swabs from 100 healthy donkeys were tested for SIG recovery, and isolates were identified by biochemical and molecular methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility of isolates was tested and detection of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes was performed. Isolates were typed at the clonal level by multilocus sequence typing and SmaI pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Results: Staphylococcus delphini and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (included in SIG) were obtained in 19% and 2% of the tested samples, respectively, and one isolate per sample was characterised. All isolates were meticillin susceptible and mecA negative. Most S.delphini and S.pseudintermedius isolates showed susceptibility to all antimicrobials tested, with the exception of 2 isolates resistant to tetracycline (tet(M) gene) or fusidic acid. The following toxin genes were identified (percentage of isolates): lukS-I (100%), lukF-I (9.5%), siet (100%), se-int (90%), seccanine (19%) and expA (9.5%). Thirteen different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles were identified among the 21 SIG isolates. Additionally, the following 9 different sequence types (STs) were detected by multilocus sequence typing, 6 of them new: ST219 (6 isolates), ST12 (5 isolates), ST220 (3 isolates), ST13, ST50, ST193, ST196, ST218 and ST221 (one isolate each). Conclusions: Staphylococcus delphini and S.pseudintermedius are common nasal colonisers of donkeys, generally susceptible to the antimicrobials tested; nevertheless, these SIG isolates contain virulence genes, including the recently described exfoliative gene (expA) and several enterotoxin genes, with potential implications for public health. Melolontha emarginata Gyllenhal, 1817 is designated as the type species of Elaphocerida Reitter, 1902. The type specimens of the species of genus Elaphocera Gené, 1836, from the entomological collections of Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (Madrid, Spain), are studied. Lectotypes are designated for species Elaphocera (Elaphocerida) ampla Báguena, 1955, Elaphocerida segurensis Escalera, 1923, Elaphocerida pygmaea Escalera, 1923 and Elaphocera (Elaphocerida) torressalai Báguena, 1955. The type material of the following species is also revised: Elaphocera pardoi Escalera, 1931, Elaphocera (Elaphocerida) ibicensis Escalera, 1926, Elaphocerida abdelkrimi Escalera, 1934 and Elaphocera baguenae Mancini, 1926.En este trabajo se designa Melolontha emarginata Gyllenhal, 1817 como la especie tipo de Elaphocerida Reitter, 1902. A review of extinct and living amphibians known from fossils (Allocaudata, Anura and Caudata) has revealed several cases that require nomenclatural changes in order to stabilize the taxonomy of the group. Nomenclatural changes include homonym replacements, corrections of spelling variants and authorships, name availabilities, and in particular, the proposal of new combinations. These changes will allow the incorporation of some palaeontological taxa to the current evolutionary models of relationship of modern forms based on molecular phylogenies. International audience; Nasal swabs of 423 healthy humans who showed different levels of contact with animals (frequent, 168; sporadic, 94; no contact, 161) were obtained in Tunisia (2008-2009), and 99 of them presented other associated risk factors. Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) was detected in one of these 423 samples (0.24%), retrieved from a veterinarian. The MRSA isolate was -positive, typed as ST80-t203-SCCIVc-III, and contained , , and genes encoding tetracycline, streptomycin, and kanamycin resistance, respectively. This MRSA isolate also contained the virulence gene encoding Panton-Valentine leukocidin. Fifty-four (12.8%) additional nasal samples contained methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) and one isolate/sample was characterized. A high diversity of types ( = 43; 4 new) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) types ( = 37) was detected among the 55 recovered strains. The percentages of antimicrobial resistance/detected resistance genes were as follows: tetracycline [22%/--], erythromycin [5%/], ciprofloxacin [14.5%], trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole [2%/], streptomycin [11%/], kanamycin [7%/], amikacin [5%], and chloramphenicol [2%]. Four and two isolates carried the and and/or genes, respectively, and always in individuals with contact with animals. Eleven isolates carried the gene and were recovered from individuals with different levels of contact with animals.

We present an up to date synonymic list of the Iberian and Balearic fauna of Meloidae (Coleoptera). This current list includes all synonymies for 65 taxa at the species level. We have checked most of the original references for all taxa and names cited in the catalogue. This revision leads to various corrections and changes in the spelling of some names and in publication dates and pagination of original references with respect to previous catalogues. The work is illustrated with photographs of 13 type specimens. Some nomenclatural and taxonomic problems require additional work, and their solution might produce further changes in the current list. Most relevant among these problems are the revision of M. maculosopunctata nomenclature, the confirmation of the specific identification of the single Iberian record for M. tricincta, the revision of the taxonomic status of Meloe ibericus, herein maintained at the species level while waiting for the needed revision of the M. brevicollis species group, the evaluation of the taxonomic status of Sitaris melanura and the taxonomic problem of the subgenus Meloe in the Balearic Islands. En este trabajo presentamos un listado sinonímico actualizado de la fauna de Meloidae (Coleoptera) de la Península Ibérica e Islas Baleares. En el listado actual se recogen las sinonimias correspondientes a 65 táxones de nivel especie. Se han revisado las publicaciones donde se incluyen las descripciones originales de la mayoría de los táxones y nombres de las especies ibero baleares de Meloidae. Esta revisión ha llevado a diversas correcciones y actualizaciones tanto en la grafía de algunos nombres, como en las las referencias originales, incluyendo cambios de fechas o de paginación con respecto a catálogos anteriores. El trabajo se ilustra con fotografías de 13 ejemplares tipo. Existen una serie de problemas nomenclaturales y taxonómicos aún por resolver, que podrían producir cambios en el listado actual. Entre estos problemas destacan el caso de la nomenclatura de M. maculosopunctata que requiere revisión, la adscripción específica correcta de la cita ibérica de M. tricincta, la revisión del estatus taxonómico de Meloe ibericus, que se mantiene a nivel específico en espera de la revisión del grupo de especies afines a M. brevicollis, la revisión del estatus de Sitaris melanura y el problema taxonómico del subgénero Meloe en las Islas Baleares.

The study of 131 more or less complete Curculionoid specimens of the collection Étienne Louis Geoffroy, conserved in the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle de Paris (Entomologie) has permitted the identification of several nominal species that were nomina dubia and the establishment of several new synonymies and combinations, and, in some cases, the reversion of precedence following Art. 23.9 of the Code, declaring nomina protecta and nomina oblita. Publishing taxonomic and systematics studies in the digital era faces major challenges and requires new approaches, many of which are currently stimulating spirited discussions amongst taxonomists and systematists. New amendments to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature are expected to regulate electronic publishing of new taxa and create a standard form for their registration (ZooBank). Responding to a perceived need, this editorial announces establishment of ZooKeys - a new online and print journal in zoological taxonomy and systematics, which aims to quickly respond and adapt to the newest developments in taxonomic publishing. Open Access is accepted as mandatory for ZooKeys. Th e rationale for and concept of ZooKeys is discussed in detail.
