We consider the setting of multiscale overdamped Langevin stochastic differential equations, and study the problem of learning the drift function of the homogenized dynamics from continuous-time observations of the multiscale system. We decompose the drift term in a truncated series of basis functions, and employ the stochastic gradient descent in continuous time to infer the coefficients of the expansion. Due to the incompatibility between the multiscale data and the homogenized model, the estimator alone is not able to reconstruct the exact drift. We therefore propose to filter the original trajectory through appropriate kernels and include filtered data in the stochastic differential equation for the estimator, which indeed solves the misspecification issue. Several numerical experiments highlight the accuracy of our approach. Moreover, we show theoretically in a simplified framework the asymptotic unbiasedness of our estimator in the limit of infinite data and when the multiscale parameter describing the fastest scale vanishes.

Simulations of coronary hemodynamics have improved non-invasive clinical risk stratification and treatment outcomes for coronary artery disease, compared to relying on anatomical imaging alone. However, simulations typically use empirical approaches to distribute total coronary flow amongst the arteries in the coronary tree. This ignores patient variability, the presence of disease, and other clinical factors. Further, uncertainty in the clinical data often remains unaccounted for in the modeling pipeline. We present an end-to-end uncertainty-aware pipeline to (1) personalize coronary flow simulations by incorporating branch-specific coronary flows as well as cardiac function; and (2) predict clinical and biomechanical quantities of interest with improved precision, while accounting for uncertainty in the clinical data. We assimilate patient-specific measurements of myocardial blood flow from CT myocardial perfusion imaging to estimate branch-specific coronary flows. We use adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling to estimate the joint posterior distributions of model parameters with simulated noise in the clinical data. Additionally, we determine the posterior predictive distribution for relevant quantities of interest using a new approach combining multi-fidelity Monte Carlo estimation with non-linear, data-driven dimensionality reduction. Our framework recapitulates clinically measured cardiac function as well as branch-specific coronary flows under measurement uncertainty. We substantially shrink the confidence intervals for estimated quantities of interest compared to single-fidelity and state-of-the-art multi-fidelity Monte Carlo methods. This is especially true for quantities that showed limited correlation between the low- and high-fidelity model predictions. Moreover, the proposed estimators are significantly cheaper to compute for a specified confidence level or variance.

We present a new approach for nonlinear dimensionality reduction, specifically designed for computationally expensive mathematical models. We leverage autoencoders to discover a one-dimensional neural active manifold (NeurAM) capturing the model output variability, plus a simultaneously learnt surrogate model with inputs on this manifold. The proposed dimensionality reduction framework can then be applied to perform outer loop many-query tasks, like sensitivity analysis and uncertainty propagation. In particular, we prove, both theoretically under idealized conditions, and numerically in challenging test cases, how NeurAM can be used to obtain multifidelity sampling estimators with reduced variance by sampling the models on the discovered low-dimensional and shared manifold among models. Several numerical examples illustrate the main features of the proposed dimensionality reduction strategy, and highlight its advantages with respect to existing approaches in the literature.

Beam stoppers are installed in the transfer lines of the CERN accelerator complex; these components are used as part of the access safety system, which guarantees the safety of workers in the accelerators. They are designed to stop one or at most a few pulses of the beam, where "stop" means the partial or complete absorption of the primary beam in such a way that the remaining unabsorbed primary or secondary beam remains below a specified threshold, as defined by the needs of radiation protection. Prior to Long Shutdown 2 (LS2; 2018--2021), beam stoppers in the injector complex were dimensioned for beam-pulse energies between 9.0 and 30~kJ. The upgrade of the accelerator complex in the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project involves beam-pulse energies of up to 92.5~kJ, meaning that these beam stoppers are not able to fulfill the new functional specifications. To cope with the LIU beam parameters and fulfil requirements for safety, maintainability, efficiency, and reliability, a new generation of 28 beam stoppers has been designed, built, and installed. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the requirements-driven design of these new beam stoppers, outlining the main requirements along with a description of the design and structural assessments. This document presents the implementation and integration of a standardized but adaptable design using a unique 564-mm-long stopper core with a CuCr1Zr absorber and an Inconel~718 diluter, taking into account radiological and infrastructure challenges. The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. We present an in-depth analysis of the LISA Pathfinder differential acceleration performance over the entire course of its science operations, spanning approximately 500 days. We find that: 1) the evolution of the Brownian noise that dominates the acceleration amplitude spectral density (ASD), for frequencies $f\gtrsim 1\,\text{mHz}$, is consistent with the decaying pressure due to the outgassing of a single gaseous species. 2) between $f=36\,\mu\text{Hz}$ and $1\,\text{mHz}$, the acceleration ASD shows a $1/f$ tail in excess of the Brownian noise of almost constant amplitude, with $\simeq 20\%$ fluctuations over a period of a few days, with no particular time pattern over the course of the mission; 3) at the lowest considered frequency of $f=18\,\mu\text{Hz}$, the ASD significantly deviates from the $1/f$ behavior, because of temperature fluctuations that appear to modulate a quasi-static pressure gradient, sustained by the asymmetries of the outgassing pattern. We also present the results of a projection of the observed acceleration noise on the potential sources for which we had either a direct correlation measurement, or a quantitative estimate from dedicated experiments. These sources account for approximately $40\%$ of the noise power in the $1/f$ tail. Finally, we analyze the possible sources of the remaining unexplained fraction, and identify the possible measures that may be taken to keep those under control in LISA.

We demonstrate a sensitive optically-pumped magnetometer using rubidium vapor and 0.75 amg of nitrogen buffer gas in a sub-mm-width sensing channel excavated by femtosecond laser writing followed by chemical etching. The channel is buried less than 1 mm below the surface of its fused silica host material, which also includes reservoir chambers and micro-strainer connections, to preserve a clean optical environment. Using a zero-field-resonance magnetometry strategy and a sensing volume of 2.25 mm$^3$, we demonstrate a sensitivity of $\approx$ 1 $\mathrm{pT}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ at $10$ Hz. The device can be integrated with photonic structures and microfluidic channels with 3D versatility. Its sensitivity, bandwidth and stand-off distance will enable detection of localized fields from magnetic nanoparticles and \mul NMR samples., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Brachycephaly, a conformation trait in some dog breeds, causes BOAS, a respiratory disorder that affects the health and welfare of the dogs with various symptoms. In this paper, a new annotated dataset composed of 190 images of bulldogs' nostrils is presented. Three degrees of stenosis are approximately equally represented in the dataset: mild, moderate and severe stenosis. The dataset also comprises a small quantity of non stenotic nostril images. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first image dataset addressing this problem. Furthermore, deep learning is investigated as an alternative to automatically infer stenosis degree using nostril images. In this work, several neural networks were tested: ResNet50, MobileNetV3, DenseNet201, SwinV2 and MaxViT. For this evaluation, the problem was modeled in two different ways: first, as a three-class classification problem (mild or open, moderate, and severe); second, as a binary classification problem, with severe stenosis as target. For the multiclass classification, a maximum median f-score of 53.77\% was achieved by the MobileNetV3. For binary classification, a maximum median f-score of 72.08\% has been reached by ResNet50, indicating that the problem is challenging but possibly tractable.

Many resource theories share an interesting property: An operation is free if and only if its renormalized Choi matrix is a free state. In this letter, we refer to resource theories exhibiting this property as Choi-defined resource theories. We demonstrate how and under what conditions one can construct a Choi-defined resource theory, and prove that when such a construction is possible, the free operations are all and only the completely resource non-generating operations. Skin lesions are classified in benign or malignant. Among the malignant, melanoma is a very aggressive cancer and the major cause of deaths. So, early diagnosis of skin cancer is very desired. In the last few years, there is a growing interest in computer aided diagnostic (CAD) using most image and clinical data of the lesion. These sources of information present limitations due to their inability to provide information of the molecular structure of the lesion. NIR spectroscopy may provide an alternative source of information to automated CAD of skin lesions. The most commonly used techniques and classification algorithms used in spectroscopy are Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Partial Least Squares - Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA), and Support Vector Machines (SVM). Nonetheless, there is a growing interest in applying the modern techniques of machine and deep learning (MDL) to spectroscopy. One of the main limitations to apply MDL to spectroscopy is the lack of public datasets. Since there is no public dataset of NIR spectral data to skin lesions, as far as we know, an effort has been made and a new dataset named NIR-SC-UFES, has been collected, annotated and analyzed generating the gold-standard for classification of NIR spectral data to skin cancer. Next, the machine learning algorithms XGBoost, CatBoost, LightGBM, 1D-convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) were investigated to classify cancer and non-cancer skin lesions. Experimental results indicate the best performance obtained by LightGBM with pre-processing using standard normal variate (SNV), feature extraction providing values of 0.839 for balanced accuracy, 0.851 for recall, 0.852 for precision, and 0.850 for F-score. The obtained results indicate the first steps in CAD of skin lesions aiming the automated triage of patients with skin lesions in vivo using NIR spectral data.

Electrostatic force actuation is a key component of the system of geodesic reference test masses (TM) for the LISA orbiting gravitational wave observatory and in particular for performance at low frequencies, below 1 mHz, where the observatory sensitivity is limited by stray force noise. The system needs to apply forces of order 10$^{-9}$ N while limiting fluctuations in the measurement band to levels approaching 10$^{-15}$ N/Hz$^{1/2}$. We present here the LISA actuation system design, based on audio-frequency voltage carrier signals, and results of its in-flight performance test with the LISA Pathfinder test mission. In LISA, TM force actuation is used to align the otherwise free-falling TM to the spacecraft-mounted optical metrology system, without any forcing along the critical gravitational wave-sensitive interferometry axes. In LISA Pathfinder, on the other hand, the actuation was used also to stabilize the TM along the critical $x$ axis joining the two TM, with the commanded actuation force entering directly into the mission's main differential acceleration science observable. The mission allowed demonstration of the full compatibility of the electrostatic actuation system with the LISA observatory requirements, including dedicated measurement campaigns to amplify, isolate, and quantify the two main force noise contributions from the actuation system, from actuator gain noise and from low frequency ``in band'' voltage fluctuations. These campaigns have shown actuation force noise to be a relevant, but not dominant, noise source in LISA Pathfinder and have allowed performance projections for the conditions expected in the LISA mission.

We consider the problem of estimating unknown parameters in stochastic differential equations driven by colored noise, which we model as a sequence of Gaussian stationary processes with decreasing correlation time. We aim to infer parameters in the limit equation, driven by white noise, given observations of the colored noise dynamics. We consider both the maximum likelihood and the stochastic gradient descent in continuous time estimators, and we propose to modify them by including filtered data. We provide a convergence analysis for our estimators showing their asymptotic unbiasedness in a general setting and asymptotic normality under a simplified scenario.

We study the problem of multifidelity uncertainty propagation for computationally expensive models. In particular, we consider the general setting where the high-fidelity and low-fidelity models have a dissimilar parameterization both in terms of number of random inputs and their probability distributions, which can be either known in closed form or provided through samples. We derive novel multifidelity Monte Carlo estimators which rely on a shared subspace between the high-fidelity and low-fidelity models where the parameters follow the same probability distribution, i.e., a standard Gaussian. We build the shared space employing normalizing flows to map different probability distributions into a common one, together with linear and nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques, active subspaces and autoencoders, respectively, which capture the subspaces where the models vary the most. We then compose the existing low-fidelity model with these transformations and construct modified models with an increased correlation with the high-fidelity model, which therefore yield multifidelity Monte Carlo estimators with reduced variance. A series of numerical experiments illustrate the properties and advantages of our approaches.

The substantial computational cost of high-fidelity models in numerical hemodynamics has, so far, relegated their use mainly to offline treatment planning. New breakthroughs in data-driven architectures and optimization techniques for fast surrogate modeling provide an exciting opportunity to overcome these limitations, enabling the use of such technology for time-critical decisions. We discuss an application to the repair of multiple stenosis in peripheral pulmonary artery disease through either transcatheter pulmonary artery rehabilitation or surgery, where it is of interest to achieve desired pressures and flows at specific locations in the pulmonary artery tree, while minimizing the risk for the patient. Since different degrees of success can be achieved in practice during treatment, we formulate the problem in probability, and solve it through a sample-based approach. We propose a new offline-online pipeline for probabilsitic real-time treatment planning which combines offline assimilation of boundary conditions, model reduction, and training dataset generation with online estimation of marginal probabilities, possibly conditioned on the degree of augmentation observed in already repaired lesions. Moreover, we propose a new approach for the parametrization of arbitrarily shaped vascular repairs through iterative corrections of a zero-dimensional approximant. We demonstrate this pipeline for a diseased model of the pulmonary artery tree available through the Vascular Model Repository.

Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation (WSSS) techniques explore individual regularization strategies to refine Class Activation Maps (CAMs). In this work, we first analyze complementary WSSS techniques in the literature, their segmentation properties, and the conditions in which they are most effective. Based on these findings, we devise two new techniques: P-NOC and CCAM-H. In the first, we promote the conjoint training of two adversarial CAM generating networks: the generator, which progressively learns to erase regions containing class-specific features, and a discriminator, which is refined to gradually shift its attention to new class discriminant features. In the latter, we employ the high quality pseudo-segmentation priors produced by P-NOC to guide the learning to saliency information in a weakly supervised fashion. Finally, we employ both pseudo-segmentation priors and pseudo-saliency proposals in the random walk procedure, resulting in higher quality pseudo-semantic segmentation masks, and competitive results with the state of the art., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

Using local operations and classical communication (LOCC), entanglement can be manipulated but not created. However, entanglement can be embezzled. In this work, we completely characterize universal embezzling families and demonstrate how this singles out the original family introduced by van Dam and Hayden. To achieve this, we first give a full characterization of pure to mixed state LOCC-conversions. Then, we introduce a new conversion distance and derive a closed-form expression for it. Thermodynamics plays an important role both in the foundations of physics and in technological applications. An operational perspective adopted in recent years is to formulate it as a quantum resource theory. At the core of this theory is the interconversion between athermality states, i.e., states out of thermal equilibrium. Here, we solve the question how athermality can be used to heat and cool other quantum systems that are initially at thermal equilibrium. We then show that the convertibility between quasi-classical resources (resources that do not exhibit coherence between different energy eigenstates) is fully characterized by their ability to cool and heat qubits, i.e., by two of the most fundamental thermodynamical tasks on the simplest quantum systems., Comment: Close to published version

We study the problem of learning unknown parameters in stochastic interacting particle systems with polynomial drift, interaction and diffusion functions from the path of one single particle in the system. Our estimator is obtained by solving a linear system which is constructed by imposing appropriate conditions on the moments of the invariant distribution of the mean field limit and on the quadratic variation of the process. Our approach is easy to implement as it only requires the approximation of the moments via the ergodic theorem and the solution of a low-dimensional linear system. Moreover, we prove that our estimator is asymptotically unbiased in the limits of infinite data and infinite number of particles (mean field limit). In addition, we present several numerical experiments that validate the theoretical analysis and show the effectiveness of our methodology to accurately infer parameters in systems of interacting particles.
