The members of the genus Conamomum Ridl. (Zingiberaceae) are primarily distributed from Indochina to western Malesia. Knowledge of the distribution of species of Conamomum is important for conservation and natural resource management. The objective of this review is to comprehensively summarise the morphological characteristics, distribution, ecology, diversity, and potential pharmacological effects of Conamomum species worldwide. The current study also provides a scientific reference for future applications by comprehensively reviewing the literature from 1892 to 2024 via several scientific databases, such as Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, Springer, and other online databases. A cluster analysis conducted on 12 species of Conamomum provides valuable insights into their morphological similarities and distribution patterns. Conamomum cylindrostachys and C. flavidulum have anther crests that are horned and 2‐lobed, contrasting with the horned and 3‐lobed anther crests observed in other Conamomum species. Regarding distribution, three species – C. odorum, C. rubidum, and C. Vietnamense – are endemic to Vietnam, while C. spiceum and C. flavidulum are both endemic to Malaysia. A key to species of Conamomum based on the morphology is provided. Extracts and isolated compounds from Conamomum plants, mainly essential oils, have been assessed to possess numerous pharmacological properties, such as anti‐inflammatory, anti‐bacterial, anti‐fungal, anti‐larvicidal, and cytotoxic activities. This review provides valuable insights into the morphological, ecological, and pharmacological properties as well as the diversification of Conamomum and identifies the ecological adaptations specific to their habitat in this region. In this paper, 131 species of Zingiberaceae and Costaceae from China were collected, and their ornamental uses were summarized, a hierarchical model of ornamental value of Zingiberaceae was established by AHP, and 28 species of Zingiberaceae with good ornamental, adaptability and popularization were selected. Purpose: To investigate the physical characteristics, bioactive compounds and antioxidant activities of curcuminoids, phenolic acids, and flavonoid compounds in three Curcuma species (C. mangga, C. zedoria, and C. longa). Methods: Rhizomes of three Curcuma species (C. mangga, C. zedoria, and C. longa) were collected, and then curcuminoids, phenolics and flavonoid acids were determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy. Antioxidant activities were assessed by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Results: Variations in colour metrics such as lightness (L*), red-green (a*), and yellow-blue (b*) indicated different bioactive compounds. C. longa exhibited significantly higher concentration of curcuminoids (333.2 µg/g DW), total phenolic content (TPC, 116.7 mg GAE/g DW) and total flavonoid content (TFC, 16.1 mg RE/g DW) compared to C. mangga, and C. zedoria (p < 0.05). Furthermore, C. longa exhibited significantly higher antioxidant activity than C. mangga, and C. zedoria (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results indicate significant variations in bioactive composition between the three species of the genus Curcuma. Curcuma longa shows significantly higher concentration of curcuminoids, TPC, and TFC as well as antioxidant activity compared to C. mangga and C. zedoria. Future studies are required to examine the impact of natural variables, growing conditions, and processing techniques on the prevalence of bioactive chemicals and correlation with biological activities. Boesenbergia kalakadensis (Zingiberaceae), a new species from Kalakad‐Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR), Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu, India is described and illustrated. Boesenbergia kalakadensis is closely allied to B. rotunda Mansf., and B. tiliifolia (Baker) Kuntze, but differs from them in its rhizome, leaves, inflorescence, length of flowers, glabrous nature of bract and bracteoles, length of calyx and corolla tube, size and shape of the corolla lobes, size, colour and margins of lateral staminodes, broader, orbicular, flat labellum, sessile, glandular hairy, crested anther, and length of style. Premise: Cytogenetic traits such as an organism's chromosome number and genome size are taxonomically critical as they are instrumental in defining angiosperm diversity. Variations in these traits can be traced to evolutionary processes such as polyploidization, although geographic variations across cytogenetic traits remain underexplored. In the pantropical monocot family Zingiberaceae (~1500 species), cytogenetic traits have been well documented; however, the role of these traits in shaping taxonomic diversity and biogeographic patterns of gingers is not known. Methods: A time‐calibrated Bayesian phylogenetic tree was constructed for 290 taxa covering three of the four subfamilies in Zingiberaceae. We tested models of chromosome number and genome size evolution within the family and whether lineage age, taxonomic diversity, and distributional range explain the variations in the cytogenetic traits. Tests were carried out at two taxonomic ranks: within Zingiberaceae and within genus Hedychium using correlations, generalized linear models and phylogenetic least square models. Results: The most frequent changes in chromosome number within Zingiberaceae were noted to be demi‐polyploidization and polyploidization (~57% of the time), followed by ascending dysploidy (~27%). The subfamily Zingiberoideae showed descending dysploidy at its base, while Alpinioideae showed polyploidization at its internal nodes. Although chromosome counts and genome sizes did not corroborate with each other, suggesting that they are not equivalent; higher chromosome number variations and higher genome size variations were associated with higher taxonomic diversity and wider biogeographic distribution. Conclusions: Within Zingiberaceae, multiple incidences of polyploidization were discovered, and cytogenetic events appear to have reduced the genome sizes and increased taxonomic diversity, distributional ranges and invasiveness. This study introduces Curcuma borealis Saensouk, P.Saensouk, and Boonma and C. retrocalcaria Saensouk, P.Saensouk, and Boonma, two newly discovered species within the Curcuma genus of the Zingiberaceae family, found in the Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai Provinces of Northern Thailand, respectively. This research aims to clarify the taxonomic identity of these species, which were initially confused with C. ecomata Craib and C. chantaranothaii Boonma and Saensouk due to similarities in flower coloration and some morphological characteristics, respectively. Detailed morphological analysis was conducted to distinguish these species. Curcuma borealis is differentiated by its unique anthers lacking appendages or projections at the base of the spurs, in contrast to the appendages or projections present in C. ecomata, while C. retrocalcaria is characterized by anther spurs folding or curving backward under the anther base and with two purple patches at the base of the labellum, distinguishing it from C. chantaranothaii. The findings highlight distinct morphological traits that set C. borealis and C. retrocalcaria apart from existing Curcuma species. The pollen morphology of the two new taxa was also studied here for the first time. This research emphasizes the importance of thorough taxonomic scrutiny for accurate species identification and contributes to our understanding of the diversity within the Curcuma genus. Cancer is a disease with uncontrolled cell growth. Various herbal plants have been widely reported to have anticancer activity. One of them under consideration belongs to the Zingiberaceae botanical family and has historically been extensively employed in herbal medicine. This research identifies a herbal formula from a combination of Zingiberaceae family extracts as a chemopreventive for breast cancer. Benzo[α]pyrene-induced female Mus musculus Balb/c was given a variety of Zingiberaceae family extracts, which included Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Curcuma longa L., and Boesenbergia rotunda (L.), to raise the levels of SOD, GSH, and CAT. Apart from that, it also reduces TNF-α levels to near normal and prevents damage to breast tissue. Group C1 showed dilatation and hyperplasia of the ductuli, whereas group Z5 did not show any histological changes in the ductuli. Zingiber officinale Rosc. is a significant perennial herbaceous plant referred as 'universal medicine' in Ayurveda , due to its wide range of medicinal properties. It is vegetatively propagated via rhizomes, rendering it vulnerable to numerous pathogens found in soil, amongst which Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. zingiberi has emerged as a major fungal pathogen accountable for rhizome & soft rot, and Fusarium yellows, leading to substantial loss. To overcome this problem, Fusarium wilt tolerant ginger 'Himgiri-17.5′ was developed employing in vitro induction of mutations and selection technique. Its transcriptome analysis in comparison with traditionally propagated 'Himgiri' was performed aimed to identify crucial defense-related genes and the role they play in plant-pathogen interaction. Illumina paired-end sequencing resulted in 57,939 annotated transcripts, amongst which 3745 were differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with 351 up-regulated. Fifty three DEGs, exclusively related to disease resistance (R) proteins spanning diverse domains, including transmembrane, kinases, nucleotide-binding site, leucine-rich repeats, coiled-coil, and Toll/Interleukin-1 receptors were identified in Himgiri-17.5. Functional annotation revealed the involvement of DEGs in positive regulation of transcription and response to pathogenic stimuli, emphasizing their role in plant defense mechanism. Fourteen indels associated with R -genes were also mapped on various chromosomes, representing invaluable genetic markers to identify genomic regions affiliated to disease resistance to serve as potential targets for genetic modification and marker-assisted selection. In addition, the analysis identified 165 up-regulated transcription factors, including v-Myb myeloblastosis viral oncogene homolog (MYB) and ethylene responsive factor (ERF) families, indicates their possible part in governing gene expression during defense mechanism. This research contributes in understanding the key genetic aspects including R -genes, indels, and transcription factors associated with pathogen recognition, signal transduction, and defense responses crucial for Fusarium wilt tolerance and holds the foundation for future studies to enhance disease resistance through biotechnological interventions. A new sesquiterpenoid, ar-tumerdiol (1) as well as ar-tumerone (2), α-tumerone (3), β-tumerone (4), 4-(1′ ,5′ -dimethyl-3′-oxo-4′-hexenyl)-2-cyclohexen-1-one (5), turmeronol (6), curcumin (7), and hexahydrocurcumin (8), were isolated from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa (Zingiberaceae). This study explores the use of essential oils from cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton) and galangal (Alpinia galanga (L.) Willd) as alternatives to synthetic insecticides for controlling the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst). The chemical compositions of these oils were analyzed using GC-MS, and their fumigation effects were tested in a vapor-phase bioassay. The experiment followed a factorial design with four types of essential oils, namely, those manually extracted from cardamom leaves (MCL) and galangal leaves (MGL) and those commercially produced from cardamom seeds (CCS) and galangal rhizomes (CGR), at seven concentrations (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 µL/L air). The manually extracted oils yielded 0.6% from cardamom leaves and 0.25% from galangal leaves. MCL contained 28 components, with eucalyptol (25.2%) being the most abundant, while CCS had 34 components, primarily α-terpinyl acetate (46.1%) and eucalyptol (31.2%). MGL included 25 components, mainly caryophyllene (28.7%) and aciphyllene (18.3%), whereas CGR comprised 27 components, with methyl cis-cinnamate (47.3%) and safrole (19.8%) as the major constituents. The fumigation bioassay results revealed that CGR was the most effective, demonstrating the highest mortality rates of T. castaneum across all the tested periods and concentrations, achieving up to 96% mortality at 168 h with a concentration of 300 µL/L air. Statistical analyses showed significant differences in mortality based on the type and concentration of essential oil, particularly after 96 h. These findings highlight the potential of CGR, with its advantages and differences in chemical composition, as an effective biopesticide against T. castaneum, with increasing efficacy over time and at higher concentrations. [Objective] Plasmodium vivax predominantly infects many people in numerous tropical areas, including Southeast Asia, the Western Pacific, the Americas, and the Eastern Mediterranean. The uniqueness of forming dormant stages can lead to relapse in vivax malaria upon further infection. This study used molecular docking and dynamic simulation to predict potential bioactive compounds from the Zingiberaceae plant family as inhibitors by targeting Plasmodium vivax Duffy Binding Protein (PvDBP). PvDBP-DARC molecular interaction is required to mediate the merozoite invasion process into red blood cells. Inhibiting this process can possibly control parasite growth and development. [Methodology] Molecular docking screening was conducted by using 138 natural compounds from the Zingiberaceae plant family targeting Plasmodium vivax Duffy binding protein (PvDBP). The top two compounds with the lowest binding energy were selected to be analyzed by pharmacokinetics prediction and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. [Results] Molecular docking screening resulted in the top two compounds with the lowest binding energy value, including 5,7-dihydroxyflavanone (-9.3 kcal/mol) and pinostrobin (-9.2 kcal/mol). These compounds are predicted to have stronger interaction than chloroquine as a control. Furthermore, the potential compounds also interact with DARC binding site residues and maintain them during the molecular dynamic simulation process. Otherwise, chloroquine as a control cannot retain 75% binding residues towards PvDBP. A molecular dynamic study revealed that all three complexes have relatively similar stability. [Conclusions] We predicted that the two bioactive compounds (5,7-dihydroxyflavanone and pinostrobin) have the potential as merozoite invasion inhibitors.

Boesenbergia rotunda has been reported for its antioxidant properties.Purpose: This study aims to explore the nephroprotective mechanism of the ethanol extract of Boesenbergia rotunda rhizome (EEBR) in cisplatin-induced rats.Methods: The rats were randomly assigned into 6 groups: the normal control (treated with saline); the negative control (cisplatin-induced without any treatment); the positive control (treated with quercetin 50 mg/kg BW); and 3 treatment EEBR (125 mg/kg BW; 250 mg/kg BW; 500 mg/kg BW) groups for 10 days. The % relative organ weight, kidney histopathology, and nephrotoxicity biomarkers expression were evaluated.Results: EEBR decreased creatinine, urea nitrogen, glutamic pyruvate transaminase, and malondialdehyde levels in the blood of cisplatin-induced rats. An insignificant increase in GOT was observed in rats treated with the highest dose of EEBR. EEBR did not significantly alter the BW and the % kidney relative weight. An abnormal shape of the Bowman capsule is observed in the negative control group. EEBR reduced the expression of Havcr1 (KIM-1), Lcn2 (NGAL), Casp3, and Casp7 genes in rats’ kidneys.Conclusion: Boesenbergia rotunda could be considered a potential candidate for add-on therapy in cisplatin-treated patients, but further studies are needed to verify its efficacy and safety.Keywords: acute kidney injury, boesenbergia rotunda, medicinal plants, nephroprotective activity, Zingiberaceae

Alpinia zerumbet (Pers.) B.L.Burtt & R.M.Sm is a perennial plant of the Zingiberaceae family widely distributed in the subtropical and tropical areas of South America, Oceania, and Asia. Multiple plant parts of A. zerumbet have been traditionally used as medicinal sources, each with different clinical uses. These variations may arise from differences among the chemical components and/or accumulations of the active compounds in each part. Therefore, this review summarizes previous studies on the phytochemicals in A. zerumbet and reveals the similarities and differences among the chemical constituents of its multiple medicinal parts, including the leaves, rhizomes, fruits, seeds, and flowers. The results contribute to the scientific validation of the traditional understanding that A. zerumbet possesses different medicinal properties in each plant part. During the botanical fieldwork conducted in Central Mindanao University (CMU) view deck in Bukidnon, the Philippines, Wurfbainia elegans (Ridl.) Škorničk. & A.D.Poulsen was collected and currently holds a new distribution record in the said province. It is a Philippine endemic ginger species and is recorded only in Bataan, Ilocos Norte, and Quezon in Luzon and Lanao del Sur in Mindanao. After the thorough review of relevant literature, the description of this species needs to be amended as some characters should be included to properly identify this specific taxon. Boesenbergia albosanguinea is a member of the genus Boesenbergia, which traditionally serves a range of purposes, including food, medicinal applications, ornamental use, and ritualistic practices. It is found growing in wet, shady forest areas on sandstone or quartz-derived soils. This study aims to characterize the essential oils from the rhizomes of B. albosanguinea, assessing their activity against acetylcholinesterase using in vitro methods, along with molecular docking analysis. The essential oil was obtained through hydrodistillation and the volatile components were analysed using gas chromatography (GC-FID) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques. A total of 34 chemical components, which constitute 96.7% of the oil content, were successfully identified. The most abundant components were elemicin (44.0%), α-gurjunene (9.3%), β-caryophyllene (4.5%), and safrole (4.1%). Anticholinesterase activity was assessed using Ellman method. A moderate inhibitory effect was observed for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzymes with IC50 values of 90.5 ± 0.2 and 110.8 ± 0.2 μg/mL, respectively. The molecular docking studies of elemicin against the cholinesterase target revealed a robust docking score (-7.0 kcal/mol), but it also showed important interactions with some key amino acid residues, providing crucial insights into its potential as a cholinesterase inhibitor. During a survey for microfungi associated with traditional medicinal plants in Guangdong Province, China, an interesting species in the Tetraplosphaeriaceae was isolated from the dead stem of Wurfbainia villosa (Zingiberaceae). The new collection is characterised by brown to dark brown, cylindrical to ovate, four-columned conidia, mostly with four straight or slightly flexuous, smooth, and long apical appendages. The phylogenetic analysis of the combined dataset of internal transcribed spacer (ITS), large subunit nuclear rDNA (LSU), the partial translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1-α), and β-tubulin (tub2) further indicated that the new collection forms a distinct branch in Tetraploa and clusters as a sister taxon with T. dwibahubeeja. Thus, we introduce a new species, Tetraploa wurfbainiae, based on distinct morphology and multi-locus phylogeny, accompanied by a description, illustration, and morphological comparison with related taxa. This is the first report of Tetraploa species on the medicinal plant W. villosa. This study enhances our understanding of the fungal species associated with the medicinal plant W. villosa. Alpinia zerumbet. (Pers.) B.L. Burttand R.M. Sm., commonly known as shell ginger, Siamese ginger, Thai ginger, or Galangal, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the family Zingiberaceae. A. zerumbet is traditionally used in various countries across the globe for its medicinal properties. This review aims to compile and analyze the available literature on the phytochemistry, traditional uses, and pharmacological properties of A. zerumbet. Traditional medicine employs A. zerumbet to treat various diseases, and it is also part of the traditional Okinawan diet in Japan. The leaves and rhizomes of A. zerumbet are commonly utilized as spices and flavorings in various dishes, including rice, meats, and pasta. The phytochemical constituents of A. zerumbet include terpenes and terpenoids such as linalool, α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol, phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and ascorbic acid. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated various biological activities, including its use as an antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer agent. This systematic review provides a comprehensive overview of the traditional uses of A. zerumbet and highlighting its chemical constituents for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical purposes. One new sesquiterpenoid, curcaromatin (1), together with twenty-one known compounds 2–22, were isolated from the rhizomes of Curcuma aromatica Salisb. (Zingiberaceae). Their structures were established by extensive spectroscopic (1D and 2D NMR and HR-MS) analysis. Most of the isolated compounds were investigated for nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW264.7 cells. (−)-Xanthorrhizol (3) displayed the strongest NO inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 4.3 μM, which was 3.7-fold more active than the reference compound, aminoguanidine (IC50 15.9 μM). A new species of Boesenbergia, B. ashihoi Suparna, Sameer Patil & V.Deepu is described from Lumdiengsai, Meghalaya, India. Boesenbergia ashihoi resembles B. siphonantha (King ex Baker) M.Sabu, Prasanthk. & Škornick. and B. tillandsiodes (Baker) Kuntze in bearing a small globular rhizome, long‐petioled leaves, horn‐like spike and anther connectives without crest, but differs in having elliptic leaves (versus oblong‐lanceolate), bracteoles much shorter than bracts (versus almost equalling bracts), labellum orbicular with orangish throat (versus ovate to obovate or cuneate with reddish or yellowish throat), and corolla tube 9–10 cm long (versus 1–6 cm long). Genome size variation is a crucial aspect of plant evolution, influenced by a complex interplay of factors. Repetitive elements, which are fundamental components of genomic architecture, often play a role in genome expansion by selectively amplifying specific repeat motifs. This study focuses on Amomum, a genus in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), known for its 4.4-fold variation in genome size. Using a robust methodology involving PhyloNet reconstruction, RepeatExplorer clustering, and repeat similarity-based phylogenetic network construction, we investigated the repeatome composition, analyzed repeat dynamics, and identified potential hybridization events within the genus. Our analysis confirmed the presence of four major infrageneric clades (A-D) within Amomum, with clades A-C exclusively comprising diploid species (2n = 48) and clade D encompassing both diploid and tetraploid species (2n = 48 and 96). We observed an increase in the repeat content within the genus, ranging from 84% to 89%, compared to outgroup species with 75% of the repeatome. The SIRE lineage of the Ty1-Copia repeat superfamily was prevalent in most analyzed ingroup genomes. We identified significant difference in repeatome structure between the basal Amomum clades (A, B, C) and the most diverged clade D. Our investigation revealed evidence of ancient hybridization events within Amomum, coinciding with a substantial proliferation of multiple repeat groups. This finding supports the hypothesis that ancient hybridization is a driving force in the genomic evolution of Amomum. Furthermore, we contextualize our findings within the broader context of genome size variations and repeatome dynamics observed across major monocot lineages. This study enhances our understanding of evolutionary processes within monocots by highlighting the crucial roles of repetitive elements in shaping genome size and suggesting the mechanisms that drive these changes. Zingiberaceae rhizomes have been used in the traditional medicine practices of three ethnic groups; Dayak Linoh, Malay, and Javanese, of the Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia for generations. Althogh, it has been around for a long time, the culture of herbal medicine and knowledge about using Zingiberaceae rhizomes as traditional medicine is still not well documented. This research aims to identify, document, and determine the types, methods of processing, and use of Zingiberaceae rhizomes as traditional medicine. The research methodology was an ethnobotanical survey involving participant observation and interviews with informants in the three tribal communities. The research results showed that the three tribal communities use thirteen (13) species of Zingiberaceae rhizomes as herbal medicine. The most commonly used Zingiberaceae rhizomes were the rhizomes of K. galanga, C. longa, Z. officinale, A. galanga, Z. cassumunar, and C. zedoria, each with a percentage use of 11.54%. The most widely used methods of processing these Zingiberaceae rhizomes were by grinding and boiling. The most widely used mode of application of the Zingiberaceae rhizomes as a traditional medicine was by drinking. Fifteen diseases were reported to be treated using Zingiberaceae rhizomes in these tribal communities. The findings from this study indicated that the three tribal communities studied use the same types of Zingiberaceae rhizomes in their traditional medicine practices, but differ in their method of processing and mode of application of these plants. An examination of the diversity of Zingiberaceae in Thailand led to the discovery of two undescribed taxa within the genus Kaempferia: K. sakolchaii P. Saensouk, Saensouk & Boonma, a newly described species, and K. phuphanensis var. viridans P. Saensouk, Saensouk & Boonma, a novel variety. Additionally, our investigation encompassed the chromosome numbers, karyotypes, and pollen morphological characteristics of these taxa. Both taxa share a chromosome number of 2n = 22, accompanied by distinctive karyotype patterns. Kaempferia sakolchaii displays a karyotype of 12m + 10sm chromosomes, while K. phuphanensis var. viridans presents a karyotype of 10m + 10sm + 2st chromosomes. The pollen grains of K. sakolchaii and K. phuphanensis var. viridans are monads, spheroidal in shape, radially symmetrical, apolar, inaperturate, and exine sculpturing irregularly arranged elongated ornamentation elements with verrucate features. Sustainable agriculture in combination with crop improvement programme is gaining more attention in the scientific field nowadays. With abundance of resources, endophytes offer an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach to increase crop yield, improve soil fertility while protecting the plants from a number of biotic and abiotic stresses. Residing within plant, endophytes are unique group of symbionts that systematically invade the internal environment of host without causing any pathogenic symptoms. Endophytes, which include bacteria, fungi, and viruses, have been shown to have beneficial effects on their hosts, either directly or indirectly. On the other hand, Zingiberaceae is a valuable family of ginger that has a lot of economic benefits. Endophytes isolated from the Zingiberaceae plants are known to promote plant development through the production of phytohormone, 1-aminocyclopropane -1 carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase, siderophore and also assist the host plant in phosphate solubilization activity. They are also prominent producers of several secondary metabolites with a lot of bioactivities. However, the full potential of endophytes from the Zingiberaceae plants largely remain untapped. Thus, the aim of this review is to discover various types of endophytes isolated from the Zingiberaceae plants, their phytohormone production, nutrient acquisition, biohardening application, secondary metabolites production and bioactivities. Alpinia officinarum is a representative of the Zingiberaceae family, which is known for its wide use in the food and pharmaceutical industries also due to its precious pharmacological potential. The major aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of thermal treatment on the composition of the rhizome of Alpinia officinarum and its antioxidant activity. The fresh rhizome was subjected to various thermal treatment processes—boiling, frying and microwave heating during various time intervals—and their composition and antioxidant activity were determined using chromatographic (HPLC – High Performance Liquid Chromatography and HPLC-MS - High Performance Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry) and spectrophotometric (DPPH and TPC – Total Phenolic Content) methods. Pinobanksin was the main compound found in the extract of the fresh rhizome (537.79 mg/kg), followed by galangin (197.7 mg/kg) and zingerone (185.5 mg/kg). The effect of thermal treatment on the rhizome composition was varied. In general, thermal processing significantly decreased the content of active compounds in the rhizome. However, there were some exceptions—boiling for 4 min significantly increased the content of pinobanksin (1162.4 mg/kg) and galangin (280.7 mg/kg), and microwave processing for 4 min increased the content of pinocembrin (213 mg/kg). Summary: Zingiber (Zingiberaceae: Zingibereae) is an economically important but taxonomically difficult genus, with names frequently misapplied. Here, we thoroughly review all names corresponding to the currently recognised 54 species from China including their synonyms, and clarify the status of their types. Lectotypes are designated for 40 names (including one second‐step), neotypes for 3 names, and epitypes for 3 names. Additional and often uncited isotypes have been discovered for numerous names, and such additional records are here provided. Tupistra bambusifolia var. rubromaculosa, Z. simaoense, Z. confine and Z. larsenii are newly treated as synonyms of Z. atrorubens, Z. densissimum, Z. officinale and Z. recurvatum respectively. A new combination, Z. bambusifolium, is proposed, based on Tupistra bambusifolia. The Zingiber zerumbet rhizomes are traditionally used to treat fever, and the in vitro inhibitory effect of ethyl acetate extract from Zingiber zerumbet rhizomes (EAEZZR) against DENV2 NS2B/NS3 (two non-structural proteins, NS2 and NS3 of dengue virus type 2) has been reported earlier. This study was carried out to establish an acute toxicity profile and evaluate the anti-fever (anti-pyretic) activities of EAEZZR in yeast-induced fever in rats. The major compound of EAEZZR, zerumbone, was isolated using chromatographic methods including column chromatography (CC) and preparative thin-layer chromatography (PTLC). Additionally, the structure of zerumbone was elucidated using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), liquid chromatography mass spectrometer-ion trap-time of flight (LCMS-IT-TOF), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy. The toxicity of EAEZZR was evaluated using Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Test Guideline 425 (OECD tg-425) with minor modifications at concentrations EAEZZR of 2000 mg/kg, 3000 mg/kg, and 5000 mg/kg. Anti-fever effect was determined by yeast-induced fever (pyrexia) in rats. The acute toxicity study showed that EAEZZR is safe at the highest 5000 mg/kg body weight dose in Sprague Dawley rats. Rats treated with EAEZZR at doses of 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg exhibited a significant reduction in rectal temperature (TR) in the first 1 h. EAEZZR at the lower dose of 125 mg/kg showed substantial potency against yeast-induced fever for up to 2 h compared to 0 h in controls. A significant reduction of TR was observed in rats treated with standard drug aspirin in the third through fourth hours. Based on the present findings, ethyl acetate extract of Zingiber zerumbet rhizomes could be considered safe up to the dose of 5000 mg/kg, and the identification of active ingredients of Zingiber zerumbet rhizomes may allow their use in the treatment of fever with dengue virus infection. A cytological study was carried out on four Zingiber species from Thailand, namely, Z. chrysostachys, Z. isanense, Z. junceum, and Z. niveum, which are edible and beautiful ornamental plants. They all have somatic chromosomal numbers of 2n = 22. This research contributes to karyological knowledge regarding this species. The somatic chromosomal counts of Z. niveum and Z. isanense are reported for the first time, as are the NFs of all species, which were all discovered to be 44. All four edible and ornamental species had their karyotypes: 16m + 6sm for Z. chrysostachys, 4m + 18sm for Z. isanense, 12m + 10sm for Z. junceum, and 14m + 4sm + 4st for Z. niveum. The dominant characteristics of these four Zingiber species are as follows: Z. chrysostachys has yellow bracts, pale yellow flowers, and a red labellum with white dots; Z. isanensis has red-brown bracts, white flowers, and a white labellum; Z. junceum has green bracts, yellow flowers, and a yellow labellum; and Z. niveum has white bracts, yellow flowers, and a yellow labellum. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) of the karyotype formula was used to divide the four Zingiber species into two groups via various points using the chromosome indexes (CIs): Z. niveum (D) with Z. chrysostachys (A), and Z. junceum (C) with Z. isanensis (B). This finding implies that, while being in the same stage, the CIs of these four Zingiber species can be used to distinguish them, revealing their resemblance at unique stages and close relationship. The role of organic and inorganic elemental profiles in the growth, development, and secondary metabolite synthesis of plants is crucial, particularly concerning their medicinal value. However, comprehensive studies addressing both aspects are scarce. Hence, the present manuscript aims to investigate the potential use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) techniques to obtain the functional groups and organic and inorganic elemental profiles of significant medicinal plants belonging to the Zingiberaceae family collected from two different geographic regions in India. The FT-IR analysis of the methanolic extracts shows the presence of aliphatic and aromatic alcohols, esters, ethers, carboxyl compounds, and their derivatives. In LIBS analysis, the spectral characteristics of atomic and molecular species present in the samples were observed, encompassing both organic and inorganic elements. The presence of heavy metals and trace elements have also been observed in the LIBS spectra of the samples. Furthermore, partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) has been used to obtain classification pattern of the samples based on their spectral fingerprints. This study not only helps in reflecting the significance of micronutrients in aiding secondary metabolism thus enhancing the medicinal properties of plants, but also enables the identification of trace elements within plants. This facilitates the determination of the suitable usage and dosage of particular plant components, contributing to the research goal of establishing pharmacological and nutraceutical significance. This study is imperative as it fills a critical gap in research, although further work in this direction is warranted.

Abstract Aging or senescence is part of human life development with many effects on the physical, mental, and physiological aspects which may lead to age-related deterioration in many organs. Genus Curcuma family Zingieraceae represents one of the well-studied and medically important genera with more than eighty species. The genus is reported to contain different classes of biologically active compounds that are mainly presented in diphenylheptanoids, diphenylpentanoids, diphenylalkanoids, phenylpropene derivatives, alkaloids, flavonoids, chromones, terpenoids, phenolic acids and volatile constituents. Rhizomes and roots of such species are rich with main phytoconstituents viz. curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bis-demethoxycurcumin. A wide variety of biological activities were demonstrated for different extracts and essential oils of genus Curcuma members including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and neuroprotective. Thus, making them as an excellent safe source for nutraceutical products and as a continuous promising area of research on lead compounds that may help in the slowing down of the aging process especially the neurologic and mental deterioration that are usually experienced upon aging. In this review different species of the genus Curcuma were summarized with their phytochemical and biological activities highlighting their role as antiaging agents. The data were collected from different search engines viz. Pubmed®, Google Scholar®, Scopus® and Web of Science® limiting the search to the period between 2003 up till now.

Phytochemical study on the rhizomes of Kaempferia parviflora led to the isolation of twenty-three compounds including six phenolic glycosides (1-6), thirteen flavones (7-19), and five phenolic compounds (20-23). Of these, the new compounds were determined to be 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methoxyacetophenone-2-β-D-apiofuranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), 2-hydroxy-4-propionyl-phenyl O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), and 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyacetophenone 8-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (3) and named as kaempanosides A-C, respectively. Their chemical structures were established based on HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectra. Malaria is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in developing countries and in sub-Saharan Africa where most malaria cases and deaths occur. The resistance of malaria parasites to most anti-malaria drugs, coupled with the high cost and the toxic effects of some drugs has posed a challenge for the search of new effective anti-malarial compounds of low cost. The study aims to determine the antiplasmodial activity of Curcuma longa against Plasmodium berghei in rodents. A total of 110 Swiss albino mice weighing 18-30 grams were used for the study: 35 for the toxicity test and 75 for the antimalarial study. For each test, 25 mice were inoculated with drug-sensitive Nk65 Plasmodium berghei and divided into five groups of five animals each and each group was administered one of the following: 120mg/kg of ethanol extract, 120mg/kg water extract, 120mg/kg nHexane extracts of C. longa, 1.2mg/kg of pyrimethamine or 5mg/kg of Chloroquine (positive control) and 0.2mls of normal saline (negative control). The lethal dose concentration was above 1500mg/kg and the extracts showed significant (P<0.05) antimalarial activity with the highest percentage inhibition (67.49%) recorded in the group treated with ethanol in the curative test, followed by the group given water in the suppressive test with (65.03%) and nHexane in the prophylactic test with percentage inhibition of 64.98%. There was a slight difference in the antimalarial activities of the extracts of different solvents which all had lower activities compared with the standard drugs (Chloroquine administered at 5mg/kg or pyrimethamine, 1.2mg/kg/day) but no total clearance of the parasite was recorded. During a survey of fungi on Wurfbainia villosa in Guangdong Province, China, three novel species, Periconia endophytica, P. yangjiangensis, and P. wurfbainiae, belonging to Periconiaceae in Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes are proposed based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence. Periconia endophytica was isolated from the healthy leaves of W. villosa, while P. yangjiangensis and P. wurfbainiae were obtained from the dead stems of the same host. Notably, holomorphs were observed in P. wurfbainiae. The morphological characteristics of the novel taxa are compared with closely related species within Periconia. Illustrations, morphological descriptions, and phylogenetic analyses are provided for the novel taxa. Multilocus phylogeny of the combined internal transcribed spacer (ITS), large subunit nuclear rDNA (LSU), small subunit nuclear ribosomal rDNA (SSU), and partial translation elongation factor 1–α (tef1-α) regions supported the establishment of three new species. One new labdane-type diterpenoid, 3β,15-dihydroxylabda-8(17),12E-dien-16,15-olide (1) named curcumatin and twelve known compounds, coronarin D (2), isocoronarin D (3), (E)-labda-8(17),12-diene-15,16-dial (4), zerumin A (5), (E)-labda-8(17),12-dien-15,16-dioic acid (6), furanodiene (7), linderazulene (8), zedoarol (9), zedoarondiol (10), germacrone-1,10-epoxide (11), germacrone-4,5-epoxide (12), and zingiberenol (13) were isolated from the ethanol extract of the roots of Curcuma aromatica Salisb. Their structures were elucidated by 1D-, 2D-NMR spectroscopic analysis, HR-ESI-MS, and comparing with the NMR data reported in the literature. Compounds 2, 5, and 13 significantly inhibited the nitric oxide production effect in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages with IC50 values of 8.8 ± 1.7, 4.0 ± 0.9, and 6.2 ± 0.4 µM, respectively. Alpinia Roxb. is the largest genus within the tribe Alpinieae, subfamily Alpinioideae, and family Zingiberaceae, with more than 250 species. A newly discovered subspecies of the rare Zingiberaceae plant Alpinia intermedia Gagnep. ssp. aurea Maknoi and Saensouk was recently identified in the Youd Ou District of Phongsali Province, Lao PDR. In addition, Alpinia latilabris Ridl. and Alpinia nobilis Ridl. are new discoveries previously unreported from Lao PDR. These plants have significant potential for usage as both food and traditional medicine. Alpinia nobilis Ridl. was collected from Ban Lane Toui Village, Youd Ou district, Phongsali Province, Lao PDR. Alpinia latilabris Ridl. was obtained from Pakkading District, Bolikhamxay Province, Lao PDR. The content includes a thorough description and scientific research on the ecological factors, timing of natural phenomena, geographical distribution, utilization, and visual evidence. Curcuma viridiflora Roxb., a plant species of significant pharmaceutical interest, has been the subject of limited chloroplast genomic research. In this study, we present the sequencing and assembly of the C. viridiflora chloroplast genome, which is characterized by a circular chromosome spanning 162,212 base pairs and a GC content of 36.20%. The genome encodes 87 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 38 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and eight ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. A phylogenetic analysis was conducted, incorporating eight related species, and based on the complete chloroplast genome and protein-coding DNA sequences of six related taxa within the genus. Outgroup species Zingiber zerumbet and Zingiber officinale were also included in the analysis. The results indicate a close relationship between C. viridiflora and Curcuma phaeocaulis, Curcuma sichuanensis, and Curcuma yunnanensis. This study provides the first chloroplast genome of C. viridiflora, thereby contributing a valuable genomic resource for future research on medicinal plants within the Curcuma genus. SUMMARY: Plant species with large genomes tend to be excluded from climatically more extreme environments with a shorter growing season. Species that occupy such environments are assumed to be under natural selection for more rapid growth and smaller genome size (GS). However, evidence for this is available only for temperate organisms. Here, we study the evolution of GS in two subfamilies of the tropical family Zingiberaceae to find out whether species with larger genomes are confined to environments where the vegetative season is longer. We tested our hypothesis on 337 ginger species from regions with contrasting climates by correlating their GS with an array of plant traits and environmental variables. We revealed 16‐fold variation in GS which was tightly related to shoot seasonality. Negative correlations of GS with latitude, temperature and precipitation emerged in the subfamily Zingiberoidae, demonstrating that species with larger GS are excluded from areas with a shorter growing season. In the subfamily Alpinioideae, GS turned out to be correlated with the type of stem and light requirements and its members cope with seasonality mainly by adaptation to shady and moist habitats. The Ornstein–Uhlenbeck models suggested that evolution in regions with humid climates favoured larger GS than in drier regions. Our results indicate that climate seasonality exerts an upper constraint on GS not only in temperate regions but also in the tropics, unless species with large genomes find alternative ways to escape from that constraint. Significance Statement: The question of how species can adapt to periods of drought and drought stress is of great relevance in the current period of climate change and it is also worth asking whether mechanisms of adaptation are similar in different parts of the world. The inflorescence of Etlingera elatior forms tubular, true flowers in an acropetal sequence that blooms ostentatiously. The aromatic plant also produces excellent flavour and fragrance afforded by the presence of secretory structures capable of accumulating, storing, and releasing volatile compounds. However, there is a lack of botanical description of the flowering morphology and the type of secretory structures involved in plant-pollinator interactions. This study aims to describe the floral morphology, characterise the diverse micromorphology of the epidermal outgrowths in the true flower, and analyse their histochemical contents by scanning electron and light microscopes. Labellum defines the anthesis stage of the true flower: unveiling by petals at anthesis and furling inwards that closes the top part of the flower at post-anthesis. In addition to the floral advertisement accessory function demonstrated by the labellum, the closure provides additional exaptation of post-pollination protection to the flower. Both glandular trichomes and osmophores are involved in biochemical functions that release heterogeneous substances (mucilage, terpenes, and phenolic compounds) to help secure anthesis. Non-glandular trichomes, on the other hand, are structurally involved in the floral development by providing physical and mechanical protection to the flower by acting as glue to maintain the closed structure of the flower, connecting floral accessories, and forming a formidable barrier surrounding the ovary, the most important reproductive organ of the flower. Findings from the present study demonstrate that the presence of secretory structures coordinated with the flower's functional traits enhances the pollination mechanism. Family Zingiberaceae is well distributed in Peninsular Malaysia, including the southern region of Johor. A preliminary survey updated the current checklist of wild gingers from Panti Forest Reserve and Labis Forest Reserve. During the brief survey, 28 taxa from 8 genera were recorded. The genera include Amomum, Alpinia, Boesenbergia, Conamomum, Etlingera, Globba, Hornstedtia, Meistera, Scaphochlamys, Sundamomum, and Zingiber malaysianum. Curcuma wenyujin is a member of the Curcuma zedoaria (zedoary, Zingiberaceae) family, which has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) due to its abundant biologically active constituents. Curcumenol, a component of Curcuma wenyujin, has several biological activities. At present, despite different pharmacological activities being reported, the clinical usage of curcumenol remains under investigation. To further determine the characteristics of curcumenol, the extraction, determination, and bioactivity of the compound are summarized in this review. Existing research has reported that curcumenol exerts different pharmacological effects in regard to a variety of diseases, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-bactericidal, anti-diabetic, and anti-cancer activity, and also ameliorates osteoporosis. The ginger family (Zingiberaceae) is one of the most diverse and abundant families in the plant kingdom in terms of number of species. In terms of chemistry, this is a family of plants containing much essential oil with mainly monoterpene and sesquiterpene derivatives, which has been widely used in medicine, food, and flavor industries. In our series of studies on ginger family plants, the two new species including Wurfbainia schmidtii (K. Schum.) Škorničk. & A.D. Poulsen and Zingiber atroporphyreus Škorničk. & Q.B. Nguyen has been investigated for the first time. This study aimed to identify the chemical compositions of essential oils extracted from the rhizomes and leaves of these two species using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis and evaluate their hypoglycemic effects through the α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory assays. In terms of chemical composition, in general, the main compounds appearing in the essential oils of both leaves and rhizomes of each species are similar but they are differences in the percentage of the main components, for example, 1,8-cineole is a main component in leaves whereas fenchyl acetate is the main one in rhizomes of W. schmidtii. Several distinctive compounds, in comparison with other members in the genus Zingiber, namely β-pinene, α-pinene, β-elemene, and sabinene, were found in the essential oil of Z. atroporphyreus. Regarding hypoglycemic effects, the essential oils from the two species tested possessed weak α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory effects.
