1. Influence of N, P, and K application on Zea mays L. growth and Cu and Pb accumulation

Abstract: Fertilization affects soil processes in many ways that remain unclear. The effects of N, P, and K application on plant growth and Cu and Pb accumulation were thus evaluated in a soil-maize system using five treatments: N, P, and K application; N and P application; N and K application; P and K application; and control (no fertilization). Compared to the control, fertilizer application treatments, especially N application, significantly increased maize photosynthetic rate, which further improved shoot biomass production. Root growth, root and shoot Cu and Pb concentrations, and Cu and Pb mobility also significantly altered with fertilizer application. Shoot Cu contents, root Cu uptake and translocation factors were significantly increased in the N-fertilized treatments. The significant decrease of shoot Pb concentration and root Pb uptake and increase of Cu and Pb immobilization were observed in theP-fertilized treatments. No significant correlation was observed between K application and Cu and Pb accumulation in maize. Our results show that an increase in P application and decrease in N application is recommended to reduce agro-ecological risks associated with Cu and Pb in soil-maize systems. However, the mechanisms governing the relationship between nutrients and heavy metal transformation in soil-plant systems needs further research.

Abstract: Water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) is one of the key parts of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), the construction of which was completed by the end of 2020. The WCDA covers a 78 000-m2 area and there exist 3120 large size photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in three ponds: 8-in PMTs are used in WCDA pond No. 1 and 20-in PMTs are used in ponds No. 2 and No. 3. The front-end electronics (FEE) system based on multigain measurement technique is designed to achieve both high-precision time and charge measurements over a large dynamic range from single photon electron (S.P.E.) to 4000 P.E. (for water pond No. 1)/1800 P.E. (for water ponds No. 2 and No. 3). To achieve a high-quality clock distribution and phase alignment as well as mixed transmission of data, clock, and commands in one fiber over a long distance, an enhanced white rabbit (WR) technique is used. Testing of all the 350 FEE modules for the WCDA is presented in this article. Test results indicate that the charge resolution is better than 20% at S.P.E. and 1% at 1800/4000 P.E. and the time resolution is better than 300 ps root mean square (rms), which successfully meets the application requirement. All the FEE modules have been fabricated and installed for the LHAASO WCDA from 2018 to 2020, and the initial commissioning operation indicates that the FEEs function well.

4. Analysis on nonlinear vibrations near internal resonances of a composite laminated piezoelectric rectangular plate

Abstract: The nonlinear vibrations and chaotic motions of a simply supported symmetric cross-ply composite laminated piezoelectric rectangular plate subjected to the transverse and in-plane excitations are analyzed in the case of primary parametric resonance and 1:3 internal resonance. It is assumed that different layers of the symmetric cross-ply composite laminated piezoelectric rectangular plate are perfectly bonded to each other and with piezoelectric actuator layers embedded in the plate. Based on the Reddy’s third-order shear deformation plate theory, the nonlinear governing equation of motion for the composite laminated piezoelectric rectangular plate is derived by using the Hamilton’s principle. The Galerkin’s approach is employed to discretize the partial differential governing equation to a two-degree-of-freedom nonlinear system under combined the parametric and external excitations. The method of multiple scales is utilized to obtain the four-dimensional averaged equation. Numerical method is used to find the bifurcation diagram, the periodic and chaotic motions of the composite laminated piezoelectric rectangular plate. The numerical results illustrate the existence of the periodic and chaotic motions in the averaged equation. It is found that the chaotic responses are especially sensitive to the forcing and the parametric excitations. The influences of the transverse, in-plane and piezoelectric excitations on the bifurcations and chaotic behaviors of the composite laminated piezoelectric rectangular plate are investigated numerically.

Abstract: The first Water Cherenkov detector of the LHAASO experiment (WCDA-1) has been operating since April 2019. The data for the first year have been analyzed to test its performance by observing the Crab Nebula as a standard candle. The WCDA-1 achieves a sensitivity of 65 mCU per year, with a statistical threshold of 5 . To accomplish this, a 97.7% cosmic-ray background rejection rate around 1 TeV and 99.8% around 6 TeV with an approximate photon acceptance of 50% is achieved after applying an algorithm to separate gamma-induced showers. The angular resolution is measured using the Crab Nebula as a point source to be approximately 0.45° at 1 TeV and better than 0.2° above 6 TeV, with a pointing accuracy better than 0.05°. These values all match the design specifications. The energy resolution is found to be 33% for gamma rays around 6 TeV. The spectral energy distribution of the Crab Nebula in the range from 500 GeV to 15.8 TeV is measured and found to be in agreement with the results from other TeV gamma ray observatories.

6. Upgrading Plan Towards Multi-messenger Observation with LHAASO

Abstract: LHAASO is planning to enhance its sensitivity at energies around 100 GeV by utilize MCP staffed 20” PMT in the Water Cherekove Detector Array. The effective area for gamma ray detection will reach to 1800 m2 and differential sensitivity to 0.2 CU at 50 GeV. It will be the very useful survey detection for transient phenomena at 50 GeV in the northern sky. LHAASO is expected to play an important role in the multimessenger observation with the upgrading.

Abstract: High quality ZnO thin films are grown by plasma-enhanced molecular-beam epitaxy on sapphire substrates and free-exciton absorption and exciton-LO phonon absorption peaks is observed in the films at room temperature. It is indicated that the exciton states are stable even at room temperature.

Abstract: The absolute muon flux between 20 and 3000 GeV is measured with the L3 magnetic muon spectrometer for zenith angles ranging from 0°to 58°. Due to the large exposure of about 150 m2sr d, and the excellent momentum resolution of the L3 muon chambers, a precision of 2.3% at 150 GeV in the vertical direction is achieved.The ratio of positive to negative muons is studied between 20 and 500 GeV, and the average vertical muon charge ratio is found to be 1.285±0.003(stat.)±0.019(syst.)., Physics Letters B, 598 (1-2), ISSN:0370-2693, ISSN:0031-9163, ISSN:1873-2445

10. Room-temperature stimulated emission from ZnO thin films grown by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering

Abstract: ZnO thin films have been deposited by RF-magnetron sputtering on SiO 2 substrates. A, B excitons from the absorption spectra at room temperature and A, B and C excitons from the reflectance spectra at the temperature below 166.7 K have been clearly observed. These results indicate that ZnO thin films have a good wurtzite crystal structure. The stimulated emission has been observed at room temperature under various excitation intensities. In the edge emission geometry we determine the gain magnitude with the variable stripe length method. The optical gain is shown as a result of the electron–hole plasma process, and exhibits the highest gain reaching value 270 cm −1 at an excitation density of 1122 kW/cm 2 .

Abstract: The L3+C muon detector at the CERN electron–positron collider, LEP, is used for the detection of very-high-energy cosmic c-ray sources through the observation of muons of energies above 20, 30, 50 and 100 GeV. Daily or monthly excesses in the rate of single-muon events pointing to some particular direction in the sky are searched for. The periods from mid July to November 1999, and April to November 2000 are considered. Special attention is also given to a selection of known c-ray sources. Abstract: High-quality ZnO thin films have been grown by plasma-enhanced molecular-beam epitaxy on sapphire substrates. Free-exciton absorption and exciton-LO phonon absorption peaks are observed in the films at room temperature, indicating that the exciton states are stable even at room temperature. Three excitonic transitions associated with valence bands A, B, and C are clearly revealed in the reflectance spectrum measured at low temperatures. This result indicates that the ZnO thin films have a perfect wurtzite crystal structure. Biexciton emission is observed in the photoluminescence spectra at low temperatures, from which the biexciton binding energy is estimated to be 14.5 meV, in good agreement with previous results. Exciton-LO (Ex-LO) and exciton-2LO (Ex-2LO) photon emission peaks are observed at low temperature. The energy difference between the Ex-LO and Ex-2LO bands is about 72.5 meV, which coincides with previously reported values of the LO phonon energy for ZnO thin films.

Abstract: Several common features of multiple production have been observed at mountain altitude and in the stratosphere. We emphasize here the case of the coplanar emission observed also in a couple of remarkable events recorded in the stratosphere. Extensive simulation with CORSIKA demonstrates that such phenomena can be explained by fluctuations with standard physics. However, in the case of stratospheric events with a minimal cascading, specific features contradicts such explanation. Consequently, the hints of new physics which could explain the alignment in terms of relativistic strings and diquark breaking have been explored. One description is proposed for the possible aspects of coplanar emission visible on colliders.

Abstract: International audience; The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) experiment was designed and constructed to push spectral measurements of individual cosmic-ray nuclei from H to Fe to energies approaching the “knee” in a series of balloon flights. A cumulative exposure of 70 days was achieved during two circumpolar flights in Antarctica in 2005 and 2006. Direct measurements at the top of the atmosphere allow event-by-event determination of the incident cosmic-ray particle charge and energy. The objective is to investigate whether and how the knee structure is related to the mechanisms of particle acceleration, propagation, and confinement. The recovered payload is being refurbished for its third flight, which is scheduled for launch in December 2007. The combination of sophisticated particle detectors and long duration balloon flight capabilities now promise high quality measurements over an energy range that was not previously accessible.

Abstract: The shadowing of high-energy cosmic rays by the Moon has been observed with a significance of 9.4 standard deviations with the L3 + C muon spectrometer at CERN. A significant effect of the Earth magnetic field is observed. Since no event deficit on the east side of the Moon has been observed, an upper limit at 90% confidence level on the antiproton to proton ratio of 0.11 is obtained for primary energies around 1 TeV., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas
