It is made available under a Creative Commons (CC BY 4.0) Attribution License. This article presents a collection of simulation studies using the ECCE detector concept in the context of the EIC's exclusive, diffractive, and tagging physics program, which aims to further explore the rich quark–gluon structure of nucleons and nuclei. To successfully execute the program, ECCE proposed to utilize the detector system close to the beamline to ensure exclusivity and tag ion beam/fragments for a particular reaction of interest. Preliminary studies confirm the proposed technology and design satisfy the requirements. The projected physics impact results are based on the projected detector performance from the simulation at 10 or 100 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. Additionally, insights related to a potential second EIC detector are documented, which could serve as a guidepost for future development. Abstract: We performed feasibility studies for various single transverse spin measurements that are related to the Sivers effect, transversity and the tensor charge, and the Collins fragmentation function. The processes studied include semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The data were obtained in {\sc pythia}6 and {\sc geant}4 simulated e+p collisions at 18 GeV on 275 GeV, 18 on 100, 10 on 100, and 5 on 41 that use the ECCE detector configuration. Typical DIS kinematics were selected, most notably $Q^2 > 1 $ GeV$^2$, and cover the $x$ range from $10^{-4}$ to $1$. The single spin asymmetries were extracted as a function of $x$ and $Q^2$, as well as the semi-inclusive variables $z$, and $P_T$. They are obtained in azimuthal moments in combinations of the azimuthal angles of the hadron transverse momentum and transverse spin of the nucleon relative to the lepton scattering plane. The initially unpolarized MonteCarlo was re-weighted in the true kinematic variables, hadron types and parton flavors based on global fits of fixed target SIDIS experiments and $e^+e^-$ annihilation data. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to 10 fb$^{-1}$ and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields. The impact on the knowledge of the Sivers functions, transversity and tensor charges, and the Collins function has then been evaluated in the same phenomenological extractions as in the Yellow Report. The impact is found to be comparable to that obtained with the parameterized Yellow Report detector and shows that the ECCE detector configuration can fulfill the physics goals on these quantities., 22 pages, 22 figures, to be submitted to joint ECCE proposal NIM-A volume

5. Search for e→τ charged lepton flavor violation at the EIC with the ECCE detector

Abstract: Exclusive heavy quarkonium photoproduction is one of the most popular processes in EIC, which has a large cross section and a simple final state. Due to the gluonic nature of the exchange Pomeron, this process can be related to the gluon distributions in the nucleus. The momentum transfer dependence of this process is sensitive to the interaction sites, which provides a powerful tool to probe the spatial distribution of gluons in the nucleus. Recently the problem of the origin of hadron mass has received lots of attention in determining the anomaly contribution $M_{a}$. The trace anomaly is sensitive to the gluon condensate, and exclusive production of quarkonia such as J/$\psi$ and $\Upsilon$ can serve as a sensitive probe to constrain it. In this paper, we present the performance of the ECCE detector for exclusive J/$\psi$ detection and the capability of this process to investigate the above physics opportunities with ECCE., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, 1 table

Abstract: The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is a cutting-edge accelerator facility that will study the nature of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of the visible matter in the universe. The proposed experiment will be realized at Brookhaven National Laboratory in approximately 10 years from now, with detector design and R&D currently ongoing. Notably, EIC is one of the first large-scale facilities to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) already starting from the design and R&D phases. The EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment (ECCE) is a consortium that proposed a detector design based on a 1.5T solenoid. The EIC detector proposal review concluded that the ECCE design will serve as the reference design for an EIC detector. Herein we describe a comprehensive optimization of the ECCE tracker using AI. The work required a complex parametrization of the simulated detector system. Our approach dealt with an optimization problem in a multidimensional design space driven by multiple objectives that encode the detector performance, while satisfying several mechanical constraints. We describe our strategy and show results obtained for the ECCE tracking system. The AI-assisted design is agnostic to the simulation framework and can be extended to other sub-detectors or to a system of sub-detectors to further optimize the performance of the EIC detector., 16 pages, 18 figures, 2 appendices, 3 tables

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is the next generation of precision QCD facility to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory in conjunction with Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory. There are a significant number of software and computing challenges that need to be overcome at the EIC. During the EIC detector proposal development period, the ECCE consortium began identifying and addressing these challenges in the process of producing a complete detector proposal based upon detailed detector and physics simulations. In this document, the software and computing efforts to produce this proposal are discussed; furthermore, the computing and software model and resources required for the future of ECCE are described. 9. ‘Flux+Mutability’: a conditional generative approach to one-class classification and anomaly detection

Abstract: Anomaly Detection is becoming increasingly popular within the experimental physics community. At experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider, anomaly detection is at the forefront of finding new physics beyond the Standard Model. This paper details the implementation of a novel Machine Learning architecture, called Flux+Mutability, which combines cutting-edge conditional generative models with clustering algorithms. In the `flux' stage we learn the distribution of a reference class. The `mutability' stage at inference addresses if data significantly deviates from the reference class. We demonstrate the validity of our approach and its connection to multiple problems spanning from one-class classification to anomaly detection. In particular, we apply our method to the isolation of neutral showers in an electromagnetic calorimeter and show its performance in detecting anomalous dijets events from standard QCD background. This approach limits assumptions on the reference sample and remains agnostic to the complementary class of objects of a given problem. We describe the possibility of dynamically generating a reference population and defining selection criteria via quantile cuts. Remarkably this flexible architecture can be deployed for a wide range of problems, and applications like multi-class classification or data quality control are left for further exploration., 30 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: We report a measurement of the π − photoproduction beam asymmetry for the reaction → γ p → π − Δ + + using data from the GlueX experiment in the photon beam energy range 8.2–8.8 GeV. The asymmetry Σ is measured as a function of four-momentum transfer t to the Δ + + and compared to phenomenological models. We find that Σ varies as a function of t : negative at smaller values and positive at higher values of | t | . The reaction can be described theoretically by t -channel particle exchange requiring pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor intermediaries. In particular, this reaction requires charge exchange, allowing us to probe pion exchange and the significance of higher-order corrections to one-pion exchange at low momentum transfer. Constraining production mechanisms of conventional mesons may aid in the search for and study of unconventional mesons. This is the first measurement of the process at this energy.

Abstract: The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar chambers with cathode strips and drift wires. Electromagnetic showers are reconstructed in a cylindrical scintillating fiber calorimeter inside the magnet and a lead-glass array downstream. Charged particle identification is achieved by measuring energy loss in the wire chambers and using the flight time of particles between the target and detectors outside the magnet. The signals from all detectors are recorded with flash ADCs and/or pipeline TDCs into memories allowing trigger decisions with a latency of 3.3 $\mu$s. The detector operates routinely at trigger rates of 40 kHz and data rates of 600 megabytes per second. Abstract: We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry Σ for the reaction γp→K+Σ0 (1193) using the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. Data were collected by using a linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range of 8.2–8.8 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The beam asymmetry Σ was measured as a function of the Mandelstam variable t , and a single value of Σ was extracted for events produced in the u channel. These are the first exclusive measurements of the photon beam asymmetry Σ for the reaction in this energy range. For the t channel, the measured beam asymmetry is close to unity over the t range studied, − t = ( 0.1 – 1.4 ) ( GeV / c ) 2 , with an average value of Σ = 1.00 ± 0.05 . This agrees with theoretical models that describe the reaction via the natural-parity exchange of the K ∗ (892) Regge trajectory. A value of Σ = 0.41 ± 0.09 is obtained for the u channel integrated up to − u = 2.0 ( GeV / c ) 2 .

Abstract: A new electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of 140 lead tungstate (PbWO 4 ) scintillating crystals was constructed for the PrimEx- η experiment at Jefferson lab. The calorimeter was integrated into the data acquisition and trigger systems of the GlueX detector and used in the experiment to reconstruct Compton scattering events. The experiment started collecting data in the spring of 2019 and acquired about 30% of the required statistics. The calorimeter is a prototype for two PbWO 4 -based detectors: the Neutral Particle Spectrometer (NPS) and the lead tungstate insert of the Forward CALorimeter (FCAL) of the GlueX detector. The article presents the design and performance of the Compton calorimeter and gives a brief overview of the FCAL and NPS projects.

Abstract: We report on the measurement of the beam asymmetry Σ for the reactions → γ p → p η and → γ p → p η ′ from the GlueX experiment using an 8.2–8.8-GeV linearly polarized tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Hall D at Jefferson Laboratory. These measurements are made as a function of momentum transfer − t with significantly higher statistical precision than our earlier η measurements and are the first measurements of η ′ in this energy range. We compare the results to theoretical predictions based on t -channel quasiparticle exchange. We also compare the ratio of Σ η to Σ η ′ to these models as this ratio is predicted to be sensitive to the amount of s ¯ s exchange in the production. We find that photoproduction of both η and η ′ is dominated by natural parity exchange with little dependence on − t .

Abstract: The barrel calorimeter is part of the new spectrometer installed in Hall D at Jefferson Lab for the GlueX experiment. The calorimeter was installed in 2013, commissioned in 2014 and has been operating routinely since early 2015. The detector configuration, associated Monte Carlo simulations, calibration and operational performance are described herein. The calorimeter records the time and energy deposited by charged and neutral particles created by a multi-GeV photon beam. It is constructed as a lead and scintillating-fiber calorimeter and read out with 3840 large-area silicon photomultiplier arrays. Particles impinge on the detector over a wide range of angles, from normal incidence at 90 degrees down to 11.5 degrees, which defines a geometry that is fairly unique among calorimeters. The response of the calorimeter has been measured during a running experiment and performs as expected for electromagnetic showers below 2.5 GeV. We characterize the performance of the BCAL using the energy resolution integrated over typical angular distributions for $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ production of $\sigma_E/E$=5.2\%/$\sqrt{E(\rm{GeV})} \oplus$ 3.6\% and a timing resolution of $\sigma$\,=\,150\,ps at 1\,GeV., Comment: 46 pages, 33 figures

Abstract: Over three quarters of a million 1-mm-diameter 4-m-long Kuraray double-clad SCSF-78MJ (blue-green) scintillating fibers have been used in the construction of the GlueX electromagnetic barrel calorimeter for the Hall D experimental program at Jefferson Lab. The quality of a random sample of 4750 of these fibers was evaluated by exciting the fibers at their mid point using a 90Sr source in order to determine the light yield using a calibrated vacuum photomultiplier as the photosensor. A novel methodology was developed to extract the number of photoelectrons detected for measurements where individual photoelectron peaks are not discernible. The average number of photoelectrons from this sample of fibers was 9.17±0.6 at a source distance of 200 cm from the PMT.

Abstract: We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry Σ for the reactions γ - p→pπ0 and γ - p→pη from the GlueX experiment using a 9 GeV linearly polarized, tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Jefferson Lab's Hall D. The asymmetries, measured as a function of the proton momentum transfer, possess greater precision than previous π0 measurements and are the first η measurements in this energy regime. The results are compared with theoretical predictions based on t-channel, quasiparticle exchange and constrain the axial-vector component of the neutral meson production mechanism in these models.

Abstract: The relative gain of the photodetectors for the GlueX Barrel and Forward calorimeters will be monitored using modular LED driver systems. The BCAL system consists of a global controller that feeds power, bias voltage and trigger signals to 96 local controllers situated at the ends of the 48 BCAL modules, which drive 40 LEDs associated with the 40 light guides at the end of each module. The FCAL system consists also of a global controller, a local controller for each acrylic quadrant covering the face of the FCAL, and ten 4-LED pulser boards per local controller connected in a star configuration along the edges of the acrylic panes. The respective systems are currently being installed on the detectors and their tested performance is presented herein.

Abstract: Over three quarters of a million, 4-m long Kuraray double-clad SCSF-78MJ (blue–green) scintillating fibres have been used in the construction of the GlueX electromagnetic barrel calorimeter, as part of the Hall D experimental program at Jefferson Lab. The response and quality of a random sample of 4750 of these fibres have been evaluated by employing a 373-nm UV LED to stimulate the fibres along their length and reading out the light using a spectrophotometer and a photodiode in order to extract the spectral response and the attenuation length, respectively. Single exponential fits to the spectral response in the 100–280 cm distance from the light source yielded an average bulk attenuation length and standard deviation of (387±26) cm. Double-exponential fits to the spectral response over the entire 4-m length also allowed the extraction of long and short wavelength components at (486±54) cm and (75±22) cm, respectively. Finally, diameter uniformity measurements were carried out. The quality assurance results confirmed that the fibres were of high quality and complied with GlueX specifications.

21. Spectral response of scintillating fibers

Abstract: The spectral response of PHT-0044 (blue) and BCF-20 (green) scintillating fibers was measured as a function of wavelength using a UV LED. It was observed that significant spectral strength from the PHT-0044 fibers was missing compared to manufacturer's specifications at the origin of the source, shifting the peak value of the spectrum to significantly higher values in wavelength. In contrast, the corresponding shift for the BCF-20 fibers was minimal. The mechanisms responsible for the observed behavior are discussed herein. Moreover, the attenuation length for each fiber type was extracted and studied as a function of wavelength. Finally, the measured fiber spectra were convolved with the wavelength response from a typical bi-alkali photomultiplier as well as a green-sensitive silicon photomultiplier and compared.

Abstract: Silicon photomultiplier devices (SiPM) were investigated as a possible front-end detector system for the electromagnetic barrel calorimeter of the GlueX Project at Jefferson Laboratory, USA, and compared against a traditional 2 in vacuum photomultiplier tube. The SiPM has gain and timing resolution comparable to that of a PMT, requires a simple electronic circuit and is not sensitive to magnetic fields. These attributes allow us to conclude that it is feasible to use the SiPM as a front-end detector for this calorimeter.

Abstract: The η → π 0 γγ rare decay was measured at the AGS with the Crystal Ball photon spectrometer and its relative branching ratio was extracted to be B 1 =(8.3±2.8±1.4)×10 −4 , based on the analysis of 3×10 7 detected η mesons. This leads to a lower partial width for this eta channel than past measurements and is in line with chiral perturbation theory calculations.

Abstract: Precise new data for the reaction K−p→π0Λ are presented in the c.m. energy range 1565 to 1600 MeV. Our analysis of these data sheds new light on claims for the Σ(1580) 3 2 − resonance, which (if it exists with the specified quantum numbers) must be an exotic baryon because of its very low mass. Our results show no evidence for this state.

Abstract: We report the results of an operational test of the efficiency and position sensitivity of a silica-aerogel Cherenkov detector installed in the HRS-E spectrometer in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. The calibration was performed with data from elastic electron scattering from polarized 3 He . The response of the photo-multiplier tubes was linearized with a quadratic correction, allowing a unique number of photo-electrons (PEs) to be extracted. The result obtained (∼7.3 PEs) is consistent with the performance of the prototype detector tested earlier under ideal conditions.

Abstract: We report a helicity analysis of subthreshold rho production on 2H and 12C nuclei at low photoproduction energies and large |t|. The results are indicative of a large longitudinal rho polarization (l=1, m=0) and are consistent with a strong helicity-flip mechanism of rho production. The analysis is model-independent and supports the large mass shift reported from the earlier 3He experiments.

Abstract: We report on an investigation of the ({pi}{sup -}, {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}) reaction by means of the {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} invariant mass distributions from {pi}{sup -} interactions on H, D, C, Al, and Cu targets at {rho}{sub {pi}{sup -}} = 0.408 GeV/c. The sharp, strong peak in the {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} invariant mass near 2m{sub {pi}} reported by the CHAOS Collaboration is not seen in our {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} data. However, we do observe a change in the shape of the {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} invariant mass spectrum for the different targets, indicating that the {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} interaction diminishes in the nuclear medium as represented by nuclei D, C, Al, and Cu, compared to hydrogen.

Abstract: The ratio of the proton's elastic electromagnetic form factors was obtained by measuring the transverse and longitudinal polarizations of recoiling protons from the elastic scattering of polarized electrons with unpolarized protons. The ratio of the electric to magnetic form factor is proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal recoil polarizations. The ratio was measured over a range of four-momentum transfer squared between 0.5 and 3.5 GeV-squared. Simultaneous measurement of transverse and longitudinal polarizations in a polarimeter provides good control of the systematic uncertainty. The results for the ratio of the proton's electric to magnetic form factors show a systematic decrease with increasing four momentum squared, indicating for the first time a marked difference in the spatial distribution of charge and magnetization currents in the proton.

Abstract: Recent photoproduction measurements of the ${\ensuremath{\rho}}^{0}$ vector meson in the nuclear medium have revealed a substantial reduction in its mass from the vacuum value. The decay of the ${\ensuremath{\rho}}^{0}$ within the strong nucleonic field at low relative ${\ensuremath{\rho}}^{0}$-$N$ momenta, and the collective ${N}^{*}{(1520)N}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ excitation, have both been presented previously as plausible explanations. In this Rapid Communication we show that the reduction can be explained through a bound ${\ensuremath{\rho}}^{0}$-nucleus state. The depth of the potential required to produce the bound state is consistent with that extracted from Dirac phenomenology using Brown-Rho scaling.

Abstract: The deuteron elastic structure function A(Q2) has been extracted in the range 0.7≤Q2≤6.0(GeV/c)2 from cross section measurements of elastic electron-deuteron scattering in coincidence using the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Laboratory. The data are compared to theoretical models, based on the impulse approximation with the inclusion of meson-exchange currents, and to predictions of quark dimensional scaling and perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract: The first spin-transfer experiment performed for the $\ensuremath{\pi}d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p$ reaction is described. Three spin-transfer parameters for this $\ensuremath{\pi}$-absorption process were determined, ${K}_{\mathrm{LS}}^{a}$, ${K}_{\mathrm{SS}}^{a}$, and ${K}_{\mathrm{NN}}^{a}$, which correspond to the \ensuremath{\pi}-production parameters, ${K}_{\mathrm{SL}}^{p}$, ${K}_{\mathrm{SS}}^{p}$, and ${K}_{\mathrm{NN}}^{p}$, of the time-reversed $p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}$ process. Each observable was measured at a single angle for a number of energies spanning the $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ resonance of this system. The results are compared with the predictions of published partial wave amplitude fits which are primarily based on existing data for the time-reversed $\mathrm{pp}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}d\ensuremath{\pi}$ reaction, and also with the predictions of two current theories. The failure of these theories to describe the fundamental features of the data clearly demonstrates the need for further theoretical work in this area.

Abstract: Differential and total cross sections for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$ absorption on $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$, leading to the pp${+}^{4}$${\mathrm{He}}_{\mathrm{g}.\mathrm{s}.}$, pp${+}^{4}$${\mathrm{He}}^{\mathrm{*}}$, and pp+X final states, are presented at incident pion energies of 100 and 165 MeV. We conclude that most of the cross section is confined to the level of coplanarity expected from quasideuteron absorption in the nuclear environment and that the contributions of nonquasideuteron absorption mechanisms are small. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The study of photoreactions on light nuclei with the TAGX spectrometer started in 1987 using the 20% duty-cycle tagged-photon beam at the 1.3-GeV Tokyo electron synchrotron. TAGX is comprised of a π-sr magnetic spectrometer for detection of charged pions, kaons, and protons and a 0.85-sr time-of-flight spectrometer for neutrons. It has served in the past eight years as a unique medium-energy-resolution multi-particle spectrometer for coincidence experiments to detect such final states as pn, pp, π + π − , ppn, pp − , and pn π + π − : some of which were kinematically-complete measurements of three-particle and four-particle final states. Details of the detector components, their performance, data acquisition, event reconstruction analyses, and detector-acceptance calculations are described together with the results of experience acquired in those experiments. A TAGX improvement in the momentum resolution required for charged particle measurements in the 1-GeV photon energy region is also reported.

Abstract: A prototype of a silica aerogel Cherenkov detector to be used for pion-proton discrimination in one of the HRS spectrometers of CEBAF Hall A has been built and tested. Each detector housing is made of carbon fiber composites and incorporates planar parabolic mirrors. The prototype was tested in electron and pion beams. The detection efficiency for particles well above the Cherenkov emission threshold has been measured to be greater than 99%, and the false trigger rate was measured to be less than 3 × 10 −2 . The results are consistent with a Monte Carlo simulation of the prototype detector, indicating that the performance of the detector is well understood.

Abstract: Differential and total cross sections for {pi}{sup +} absorption on {sup 6}Li leading to the {ital pp}+{sup 4}He{sub g.s} final state are presented at incident pion energies of 100 and 165 MeV. The narrow width of the {ital pp} angular correlation is observed and reported.

Abstract: The reaction $^{12}C({e,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\mathrm{pp})$ has been studied at an energy transfer $\ensuremath{\omega}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}212\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ and a three-momentum transfer $|\mathit{q}|\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}70\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}/c$. The measured missing-energy spectrum shows a signature for knockout of proton pairs from $(1p{)}^{2}$, $(1p,1s)$, and $(1s{)}^{2}$ states. A comparison of the data with a calculation, in which different processes leading to two-nucleon knockout are accounted for, shows that the measured cross section for the knockout of a $(1p{)}^{2}$ pair can largely be attributed to short-range nucleon-nucleon correlations.

Abstract: Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) on the proton has been studied at Jefferson Lab using the exclusive photon electroproduction reaction (e p --> e p gamma). This paper gives a detailed account of the analysis which has led to the determination of the structure functions P{sub LL}-P{sub TT}/epsilon and P{sub LT}, and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha{sub E}(Q{sup 2}) and beta{sub M}(Q{sup 2}) at values of the four-momentum transfer squared Q{sup 2} = 0.92 and 1.76 GeV{sup 2}. These data, together with the results of VCS experiments at lower momenta, help building a coherent picture of the electric and magnetic GPs of the proton over the full measured Q{sup 2}-range, and point to their non-trivial behavior.

Abstract: An extension to the GEANT software package is presented, which introduces spin for elastic n-p scattering in the 1–500 MeV energy range. With this extension, the asymmetry due to the analyzing power of the mentioned interaction can be simulated, and is applied in the optimization of the figure-of-merit of a neutron polarimeter.

Abstract: The reactions 12 C (e,e′pp) and 12 C (e,e′p) have been studied at an energy transfer ω = 210 MeV and a momentum transfer ‖q‖ = 267 MeV/c. The angular correlation between two emitted protons has been measured keeping the position of the electron spectrometer and one proton detector fixed, while the position of the other detector was varied around the conjugate angle. A clear signature for the emission of two correlated protons has been observed.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for K{sup -} radiative capture in flight on the proton, leading to the gammaLAMBDA and gammaSIGMA{sup 0} final states, have been measured at eight K{sup -} momenta between 514 and 750 MeV/c. The data were obtained with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer installed at the separated K/pi beam line C6 of the BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The results substantially improve the existing experimental data available for studying radiative decays of excited hyperon states. An exploratory theoretical analysis is performed within the Regge-plus-resonance approach. According to this analysis, the gammaSIGMA{sup 0} final state is dominated by hyperon-resonance exchange and hints at an important role for a resonance in the mass region of 1700 MeV. In the gammaLAMBDA final state, in contrast, the resonant contributions account for only half the strength, and the data suggest the importance of a resonance in the mass region of 1550 MeV.

Abstract: Measured values of the differential cross sections for pion-nucleon charge exchange, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}n$, are presented for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ momenta of $103,112,120,130,139,152$, and $178$ MeV/$c$. Complete angular distributions were obtained by using the Crystal Ball detector at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Statistical uncertainties of the differential cross sections vary from $3$ to $6%$ in the backward angle region and from $6$ to about $20%$ in the forward region with the exception of the two most forward angles. The systematic uncertainties are estimated to be about $3%$ for all momenta.

Abstract: Differential cross sections and hyperon polarizations have been measured for ${\overline{K}}^{0}n$, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$, and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{0}$ production in ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ interactions at eight ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ momenta between 514 and 750 MeV/$c$. The experiment detected the multiphoton final states with the Crystal Ball spectrometer using a ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ beam from the BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The results provide significantly greater precision than the existing data, allowing a detailed reexamination of the excited hyperon states in our energy range.
