Abstract

Abstract Background Patients on haemodialysis are predisposed to heart rhythm disorders, including bradyarrhythmia, atrial fibrillation (AF)/atrial flutter, supraventricular/ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death (SCD) (Turakhia et al. in Eur Heart J 39:2314–2325, 2018). In addition to the fact that patients on haemodialysis have a high prevalence of underlying cardiac disease, the stress of haemodialysis itself might also contribute to increased rates of arrhythmias and SCD (Samanta et al. in Can J Cardiol 35:1228–1240, 2019). Methods A Holter 24-h electrocardiogram was set up immediately before the start of haemodialysis for 72 haemodialysis patients (dialysis vintage: 6–8734 days) to record premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) as a marker of arrhythmogenesis for 24 h. Blood samples were also collected every hour during haemodialysis treatment. Each patient was dialyzed against a dialysate consisting of Na+140 mEq/L, K+ 2.0 mEq/L, Ca+ 3.0 mEq/L, Mg2+ 1.0 mEq/L, Cl− 110 mEq/L, CH3COO− 8 mmol/L and HCO3 − 30 mEq/L. Abstract

The angular momentum of molecular cloud cores plays a key role in the star formation process. However, the evolution of the angular momentum of molecular cloud cores formed in magnetized molecular filaments is still unclear. In this paper, we perform 3D magnetohydrodynamics simulations to reveal the effect of the magnetic field on the evolution of the angular momentum of molecular cloud cores formed through filament fragmentation. As a result, we find that the angular momentum decreases by 30% and 50% at the mass scale of 1 M _⊙ in the case of weak and strong magnetic field, respectively. By analyzing the torques exerted on fluid elements, we identify the magnetic tension as the dominant process for angular momentum transfer for mass scales ≲3 M _⊙ for the strong magnetic field case. This critical mass scale can be understood semianalytically as the timescale of magnetic braking. We show that the anisotropy of the angular momentum transfer due to the presence of a strong magnetic field changes the resultant angular momentum of the core only by a factor of 2. We also find that the distribution of the angle between the rotation axis and the magnetic field does not show strong alignment even just before the first core formation. Our results also indicate that the variety of the angular momentum of the cores is inherited from the difference in the phase of the initial turbulent velocity field. The variety could contribute to the diversity in size and other properties of protoplanetary disks recently reported by observations.

Abstract

Observed protostellar outflows exhibit a variety of asymmetrical features, including remarkable unipolar outflows and bending outflows. Revealing the formation and early evolution of such asymmetrical protostellar outflows, especially the unipolar outflows, is essential for a better understanding of the star and planet formation because they can dramatically change the mass accretion and angular momentum transport to the protostars and protoplanetary disks. Here we perform three-dimensional nonideal magnetohydrodynamics simulations to investigate the formation and early evolution of the asymmetrical protostellar outflows in magnetized turbulent isolated molecular cloud cores. We find, for the first time to our knowledge, that the unipolar outflow forms even in the single low-mass protostellar system. The results show that the unipolar outflow is driven in the weakly magnetized cloud cores with the dimensionless mass-to-flux ratios of μ = 8 and 16. Furthermore, we find the protostellar rocket effect of the unipolar outflow, which is similar to the launch and propulsion of a rocket. The unipolar outflow ejects the protostellar system from the central dense region to the outer region of the parent cloud core, and the ram pressure caused by its ejection suppresses the driving of additional new outflows. In contrast, the bending bipolar outflow is driven in the moderately magnetized cloud core with μ = 4. The ratio of the magnetic to turbulent energies of a parent cloud core may play a key role in the formation of asymmetrical protostellar outflows.

Abstract

We report 850 μ m continuum polarization observations toward the filamentary high-mass star-forming region NGC 2264, taken as part of the B -fields In STar forming Regions Observations large program on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data reveal a well-structured nonuniform magnetic field in the NGC 2264C and 2264D regions with a prevailing orientation around 30° from north to east. Field strength estimates and a virial analysis of the major clumps indicate that NGC 2264C is globally dominated by gravity, while in 2264D, magnetic, gravitational, and kinetic energies are roughly balanced. We present an analysis scheme that utilizes the locally resolved magnetic field structures, together with the locally measured gravitational vector field and the extracted filamentary network. From this, we infer statistical trends showing that this network consists of two main groups of filaments oriented approximately perpendicular to one another. Additionally, gravity shows one dominating converging direction that is roughly perpendicular to one of the filament orientations, which is suggestive of mass accretion along this direction. Beyond these statistical trends, we identify two types of filaments. The type I filament is perpendicular to the magnetic field with local gravity transitioning from parallel to perpendicular to the magnetic field from the outside to the filament ridge. The type II filament is parallel to the magnetic field and local gravity. We interpret these two types of filaments as originating from the competition between radial collapsing, driven by filament self-gravity, and longitudinal collapsing, driven by the region's global gravity.

Abstract

COVID-19 has accelerated the spread of telecommuting in Japan. In past studies regarding telecommuting, it was proved to be the result of i-deals, so it was discussed in the context of location flexibility i-deals (LFi-deals). The spread of COVID-19, however, has given rise to semi-compulsory telecommuting. Therefore, this study takes three groups: Group A, which continues to work at the office as before; Group B, which has started to telecommute (inexperienced telecommuters) so that telecommuting is regarded as semi-compulsory; and Group C, which has experience with telecommuting (experienced telecommuters) so that telecommuting is the result of making LFi-deals; and investigates the relationship that telecommuting has with the degree of self-determination (DSD) and productivity. Our analysis found that between Group B and Group C, which were both telecommuting, both DSD and productivity were significantly higher for Group C which has LFi-deals compared with Group B, for which telecommuting is semi-compulsory. However, DSD and productivity were higher for Group B than for Group A, so it is possible that starting to telecommute leads to more LFi-deals, a greater DSD, and higher productivity.

Abstract

We present observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μ m from the L43 molecular cloud, which sits in the Ophiuchus cloud complex. The data were taken using SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as a part of the BISTRO large program. L43 is a dense ( ${N}_{{{\rm{H}}}_{2}}\sim {10}^{22}$ –10 ^23 cm ^−2 ) complex molecular cloud with a submillimeter-bright starless core and two protostellar sources. There appears to be an evolutionary gradient along the isolated filament that L43 is embedded within, with the most evolved source closest to the Sco OB2 association. One of the protostars drives a CO outflow that has created a cavity to the southeast. We see a magnetic field that appears to be aligned with the cavity walls of the outflow, suggesting interaction with the outflow. We also find a magnetic field strength of up to ∼160 ± 30 μ G in the main starless core and up to ∼90 ± 40 μ G in the more diffuse, extended region. These field strengths give magnetically super- and subcritical values, respectively, and both are found to be roughly trans-Alfvénic. We also present a new method of data reduction for these denser but fainter objects like starless cores.

Abstract

We study the H ii regions associated with the NGC 6334 molecular cloud observed in the submillimeter and taken as part of the B -fields In STar-forming Region Observations Survey. In particular, we investigate the polarization patterns and magnetic field morphologies associated with these H ii regions. Through polarization pattern and pressure calculation analyses, several of these bubbles indicate that the gas and magnetic field lines have been pushed away from the bubble, toward an almost tangential (to the bubble) magnetic field morphology. In the densest part of NGC 6334, where the magnetic field morphology is similar to an hourglass, the polarization observations do not exhibit observable impact from H ii regions. We detect two nested radial polarization patterns in a bubble to the south of NGC 6334 that correspond to the previously observed bipolar structure in this bubble. Finally, using the results of this study, we present steps (incorporating computer vision; circular Hough transform) that can be used in future studies to identify bubbles that have physically impacted magnetic field lines.

Abstract

We present BISTRO Survey 850 μ m dust emission polarization observations of the L1495A-B10 region of the Taurus molecular cloud, taken at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We observe a roughly triangular network of dense filaments. We detect nine of the dense starless cores embedded within these filaments in polarization, finding that the plane-of-sky orientation of the core-scale magnetic field lies roughly perpendicular to the filaments in almost all cases. We also find that the large-scale magnetic field orientation measured by Planck is not correlated with any of the core or filament structures, except in the case of the lowest-density core. We propose a scenario for early prestellar evolution that is both an extension to, and consistent with, previous models, introducing an additional evolutionary transitional stage between field-dominated and matter-dominated evolution, observed here for the first time. In this scenario, the cloud collapses first to a sheet-like structure. Uniquely, we appear to be seeing this sheet almost face on. The sheet fragments into filaments, which in turn form cores. However, the material must reach a certain critical density before the evolution changes from being field dominated to being matter dominated. We measure the sheet surface density and the magnetic field strength at that transition for the first time and show consistency with an analytical prediction that had previously gone untested for over 50 yr.

Abstract

The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Clinical Practice Guideline on Chronic Kidney Disease–Mineral and Bone Disorder (CKD–MBD) 2009 provided recommendations on the detection, evaluation, and treatment of CKD-MBD in patients CKD who are and are not undergoing dialysis. Because of the accumulation of evidence since this initial publication, the CKD-MBD Guideline underwent a selective update in 2017. In April 2018, KDIGO convened a CKD-MBD Guideline Implementation Summit in Japan with the key objective to discuss various barriers to the uptake and implementation of the CKD-MBD Guideline in 8 Asian countries/regions. These countries/regions were comparable according to their high-to-middle economic ranking assigned by the World Bank. The discussion took into account the availability of CKD-MBD medication therapies and government health policies that may influence reimbursement and practice patterns in the region. Most importantly, Summit participants developed a framework of multifaceted strategies aimed at overcoming barriers to guideline implementation. The Summit attendees suggested a shared decision-making approach between clinicians and patients in CKD-MBD management, as well as individualized care based on the treatment risk-benefit ratio. The Summit participants also discussed how KDIGO, as a guideline development organization, may work in partnership with local and national nephrology societies to provide education and facilitate implementation of the guideline by clinicians. The conclusions drawn from this Summit in Asia may serve as an important guide for other regions to follow. Abstract

We study the formation and early evolution of young stellar objects (YSOs) using three-dimensional non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to investigate the effect of cosmic ray ionization rate and dust fraction (or amount of dust grains) on circumstellar disk formation. Our simulations show that a higher cosmic ray ionization rate and a lower dust fraction lead to (i) a smaller magnetic resistivity of ambipolar diffusion, (ii) a smaller disk size and mass, and (iii) an earlier timing of outflow formation and a greater angular momentum of the outflow. In particular, at a high cosmic ray ionization rate, the disks formed early in the simulation are dispersed by magnetic braking on a time scale of about 104 years. Our results suggest that the cosmic ray ionization rate has a particularly large impact on the formation and evolution of disks, while the impact of the dust fraction is not significant., 8 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

11. i-tRAP (individual tRNA acylation PCR): a convenient method for selective quantification of tRNA charging

Abstract

Each transfer RNA (tRNA) is aminoacylated (charged) with a genetic codon-specific amino acid at its 3′ end. Charged tRNAs are primarily used for translation, whereas fluctuations in charged tRNA fractions are known to reflect cellular response to stress. Here we report the development of individual tRNA-acylation using PCR (i-tRAP), a convenient PCR-based method that can specifically quantify the individual tRNA charging ratio. In this i-tRAP method, demethylases remove base methylations which are problematic for reverse transcription reaction, and β-elimination reaction specifically removes the 3′ end of adenine residue in uncharged tRNA. Subsequent TaqMan MGB qRT-PCR can distinguish between cDNA of charged tRNA and uncharged tRNA. By using this method, we revealed that the charging ratio of tRNAGln(CUG) was changed in response to amino acid starvation and also the charging ratio of tRNAGln(CUG) in senescent cells was lower than in young cells under starvation conditions. i-tRAP can be applicable to the quantification of the charging ratio of various tRNAs, and provides a simple and convenient method for analyzing tRNA charging.

Abstract

We present 850 $��$m polarimetric observations toward the Serpens Main molecular cloud obtained using the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations probe the magnetic field morphology of the Serpens Main molecular cloud on about 6000 au scales, which consists of cores and six filaments with different physical properties such as density and star formation activity. Using the histogram of relative orientation (HRO) technique, we find that magnetic fields are parallel to filaments in less dense filamentary structures where $N_{H_2} < 0.93\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ (magnetic fields perpendicular to density gradients), while being perpendicular to filaments (magnetic fields parallel to density gradients) in dense filamentary structures with star formation activity. Moreover, applying the HRO technique to denser core regions, we find that magnetic field orientations change to become perpendicular to density gradients again at $N_{H_2} \approx 4.6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. This can be interpreted as a signature of core formation. At $N_{H_2} \approx 16 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ magnetic fields change back to being parallel to density gradients once again, which can be understood to be due to magnetic fields being dragged in by infalling material. In addition, we estimate the magnetic field strengths of the filaments ($B_{POS} = 60-300~��$G)) using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and discuss whether the filaments are gravitationally unstable based on magnetic field and turbulence energy densities., 18 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

With the worldwide spread of the COVID-19 vaccine program during the COVID-19 pandemic, the numbers of reported cases with new-onset or relapsed kidney disease/vasculitis such as minimal change nephrotic syndrome, immunoglobulinA (IgA) nephropathy, and IgA vasculitis (IgAV) that developed after COVID-19 vaccination are increasing. We present the case of a 67-year-old Japanese woman who developed IgAV with purpura on her extremities and trunk in the evening of the day that she received the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. She subsequently presented with acute kidney injury and nephrotic syndrome, and a kidney biopsy performed 14 days after the second vaccination showed diffuse mesangial and endocapillary glomerulonephritis with necrotizing crescent formation, accompanied by IgA deposition. One steroid pulse plus four administrations of a monthly intravenous cyclophosphamide injection were applied, followed by oral azathioprine during oral steroid tapering. Her response to this treatment was unsatisfactory and intractable for some time. Eventually, her renal function improved and nephrotic syndrome was resolved, while microscopic hematuria and proteinuria at ~ 1 g/gCr remained at 6 months post-vaccination. Unlike the previous milder renal-involved IgAV cases following COVID-19 vaccination, our patient's case presented severe glomerulonephritis and took a long time to recover despite intensive initial immunosuppressive treatment.

Abstract

This paper investigates the impact of dust size distribution on magnetic resistivity. In particular, we focus on its impact when the maximum dust size significantly increases from sub-micron. The first half of the paper describes our calculation method for magnetic resistivity based on the model of \citet{1987ApJ...320..803D} and shows that the method reproduces the results of a more realistic chemical reaction network calculations reasonably well. Then, we describe the results of the resistivity calculations for dust distributions with large maximum dust grains. Our results show that resistivity tends to decrease with dust growth, which is particularly true when the dust size power exponent $q$ is $q=2.5$. On the other hand, the decrease is less pronounced when the dust size power exponent $q$ is $q=3.5$, i.e., when the small dust is also responsible for the dust cross-section. Abstract

Tao-Chung Ching et al., We present 850 μm dust polarization observations of the massive DR21 filament from the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and the SCUBA-2 camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We detect ordered magnetic fields perpendicular to the parsec-scale ridge of the DR21 main filament. In the subfilaments, the magnetic fields are mainly parallel to the filamentary structures and smoothly connect to the magnetic fields of the main filament. We compare the POL-2 and Planck dust polarization observations to study the magnetic field structures of the DR21 filament on 0.1–10 pc scales. The magnetic fields revealed in the Planck data are well-aligned with those of the POL-2 data, indicating a smooth variation of magnetic fields from large to small scales. The plane-of-sky magnetic field strengths derived from angular dispersion functions of dust polarization are 0.6–1.0 mG in the DR21 filament and ∼0.1 mG in the surrounding ambient gas. The mass-to-flux ratios are found to be magnetically supercritical in the filament and slightly subcritical to nearly critical in the ambient gas. The alignment between column density structures and magnetic fields changes from random alignment in the low-density ambient gas probed by Planck to mostly perpendicular in the high-density main filament probed by James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Abstract

Hwang et al., We present and analyze observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μm toward the central 1 × 1 pc hub-filament structure of Monoceros R2 (Mon R2). The data are obtained with SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields in Star-forming Region Observations survey. The orientations of the magnetic field follow the spiral structure of Mon R2, which are well described by an axisymmetric magnetic field model. We estimate the turbulent component of the magnetic field using the angle difference between our observations and the best-fit model of the underlying large-scale mean magnetic field. This estimate is used to calculate the magnetic field strength using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, for which we also obtain the distribution of volume density and velocity dispersion using a column density map derived from Herschel data and the C18O (J = 3 − 2) data taken with HARP on the JCMT, respectively. We make maps of magnetic field strengths and mass-to-flux ratios, finding that magnetic field strengths vary from 0.02 to 3.64 mG with a mean value of 1.0 ± 0.06 mG, and the mean critical mass-to-flux ratio is 0.47 ± 0.02. Additionally, the mean Alfvén Mach number is 0.35 ± 0.01. This suggests that, in Mon R2, the magnetic fields provide resistance against large-scale gravitational collapse, and the magnetic pressure exceeds the turbulent pressure. We also investigate the properties of each filament in Mon R2. 25. Imbalanced Hemolymph Lipid Levels Affect Feeding Motivation in the Two-Spotted Cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus.

Abstract

Insect feeding behavior is regulated by many intrinsic factors, including hemolymph nutrient levels. Adipokinetic hormone (AKH) is a peptide factor that modulates hemolymph nutrient levels and regulates the nutritional state of insects by triggering the transfer of lipids into the hemolymph. We recently demonstrated that RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated knockdown of the AKH receptor (AKHR) reduces hemolymph lipid levels, causing an increase in the feeding frequency of the two-spotted cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus. This result indicated that reduced hemolymph lipid levels might motivate crickets to feed. In the present study, to elucidate whether hemolymph lipid levels contribute to insect feeding behavior, we attempted to manipulate hemolymph lipid levels via the lipophorin (Lp)-mediated lipid transferring system in G. bimaculatus. Of the constituent proteins in Lp, we focused on apolipophorin-III (GrybiApoLp-III) because of its possible role in facilitating lipid mobilization. First, we used RNAi to reduce the expression of GrybiApoLp-III. RNAi-mediated knockdown of GrybiApoLp-III had little effect on basal hemolymph lipid levels and the amount of food intake. In addition, hemolymph lipid levels remained static even after injecting AKH into GrybiApoLp-IIIRNAi crickets. These observations indicated that ApoLp-III does not maintain basal hemolymph lipid levels in crickets fed ad libitum, but is necessary for mobilizing lipid transfer into the hemolymph following AKH stimulation. Second, Lp (containing lipids) was injected into the hemolymph to induce a temporary increase in hemolymph lipid levels. Consequently, the initiation of feeding was delayed in a dose-dependent manner, indicating that increased hemolymph lipid levels reduced the motivation to feed. Taken together, these data validate the importance of basal hemolymph lipid levels in the control of energy homeostasis and for regulating feeding behavior in crickets.

Abstract

International audience; Blood pressure (BP) and volume control are critical components of dialysis care and have substantial impacts on patient symptoms, quality of life, and cardiovascular complications. Yet, developing consensus best practices for BP and volume control have been challenging, given the absence of objective measures of extracellular volume status and the lack of high-quality evidence for many therapeutic interventions. In February of 2019, Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) held a Controversies Conference titled Blood Pressure and Volume Management in Dialysis to assess the current state of knowledge related to BP and volume management and identify opportunities to improve clinical and patient-reported outcomes among individuals receiving maintenance dialysis. Four major topics were addressed: BP measurement, BP targets, and pharmacologic management of suboptimal BP; dialysis prescriptions as they relate to BP and volume; extracellular volume assessment and management with a focus on technology-based solutions; and volume-related patient symptoms and experiences. The overarching theme resulting from presentations and discussions was that managing BP and volume in dialysis involves weighing multiple clinical factors and risk considerations as well as patient lifestyle and preferences, all within a narrow therapeutic window for avoiding acute or chronic volume-related complications. Striking this challenging balance requires individualizing the dialysis prescription by incorporating comorbid health conditions, treatment hemodynamic patterns, clinical judgment, and patient preferences into decision-making, all within local resource constraints.

Abstract

We present the results of simultaneous 450 $\mu$m and 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the massive star forming region NGC 2071IR, a target of the BISTRO (B-fields in Star-Forming Region Observations) Survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and SCUBA-2 camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find a pinched magnetic field morphology in the central dense core region, which could be due to a rotating toroidal disk-like structure and a bipolar outflow originating from the central young stellar object, IRS 3. Using the modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we obtain a plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of 563$\pm$421 $\mu$G in the central $\sim$0.12 pc region from 850 $\mu$m polarization data. The corresponding magnetic energy density of 2.04$\times$10$^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-3}$ is comparable to the turbulent and gravitational energy densities in the region. We find that the magnetic field direction is very well aligned with the whole of the IRS 3 bipolar outflow structure. We find that the median value of polarization fractions, 3.0 \%, at 450 $\mu$m in the central 3 arcminute region, which is larger than the median value of 1.2 \% at 850 $\mu$m. The trend could be due to the better alignment of warmer dust in the strong radiation environment. We also find that polarization fractions decrease with intensity at both wavelengths, with slopes, determined by fitting a Rician noise model, of $0.59 \pm 0.03$ at 450 $\mu$m and $0.36 \pm 0.04$ at 850 $\mu$m, respectively. We think that the shallow slope at 850 $\mu$m is due to grain alignment at the center being assisted by strong radiation from the central young stellar objects., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

Background: D-Serine, a long-term undetected enantiomer of serine, is a biomarker that reflects kidney function and disease activity. The physiological functions of D-serine have been unclear. Methods: Dynamics of D-serine was assessed by measuring D-serine in human samples of living kidney donors using two-dimensional high-performance liquid chromatography, and by auto-radiographic studies in mice. Effects of D-serine on kidney were examined by gene expression profiling and metabolic studies using unilateral nephrectomy mice, and genetically modified cells. Results: Unilateral nephrectomy in human living kidney donors decreases urinary excretion and thus increases the blood level of D-serine. D-Serine is quickly and dominantly distributed to the kidney upon injection in mice, suggesting that the kidney is a main target organ. Treatment of D-serine at low dose promotes the enlargement of remnant kidney in mouse model. Mechanistically, D-serine activates the cell cycle for tissue remodeling through an mTOR-related pathway. Conclusions: D-Serine is a physiological molecule that promotes kidney remodeling. Besides its function as a biomarker, D-serine has a physiological activity that influences kidney function.

Abstract

We present the evolution of rotational directions of circumstellar disks in a triple protostar system simulated from a turbulent molecular cloud core with no magnetic field. We find a new formation pathway of a counter-rotating circumstellar disk in such triple systems. The tertiary protostar forms via the circumbinary disk fragmentation and the initial rotational directions of all the three circumstellar disks are almost parallel to that of the orbital motion of the binary system. Their mutual gravito-hydrodynamical interaction for the subsequent $\sim10^4\thinspace\rm{yr}$ greatly disturbs the orbit of the tertiary, and the rotational directions of the tertiary disk and star are reversed due to the spiral-arm accretion of the circumbinary disk. The counter-rotation of the tertiary circumstellar disk continues to the end of the simulation ($\sim6.4\times10^4\thinspace\rm{yr}$ after its formation), implying that the counter-rotating disk is long-lived. This new formation pathway during the disk evolution in Class 0/I Young Stellar Objects possibly explains the counter-rotating disks recently discovered by ALMA., Accepted for publication in PASJ

Abstract

We have obtained sensitive dust continuum polarization observations at 850 μm in the B213 region of Taurus using POL-2 on SCUBA-2 at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the B-fields in STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations allow us to probe magnetic field (B-field) at high spatial resolution (∼2000 au or ∼0.01 pc at 140 pc) in two protostellar cores (K04166 and K04169) and one prestellar core (Miz-8b) that lie within the B213 filament. Using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, we estimate the B-field strengths in K04166, K04169, and Miz-8b to be 38 ± 14, 44 ± 16, and 12 ± 5 μG, respectively. These cores show distinct mean B-field orientations. The B-field in K04166 is well ordered and aligned parallel to the orientations of the core minor axis, outflows, core rotation axis, and large-scale uniform B-field, in accordance with magnetically regulated star formation via ambipolar diffusion taking place in K04166. The B-field in K04169 is found to be ordered but oriented nearly perpendicular to the core minor axis and large-scale B-field and not well correlated with other axes. In contrast, Miz-8b exhibits a disordered B-field that shows no preferred alignment with the core minor axis or large-scale field. We found that only one core, K04166, retains a memory of the large-scale uniform B-field. The other two cores, K04169 and Miz-8b, are decoupled from the large-scale field. Such a complex B-field configuration could be caused by gas inflow onto the filament, even in the presence of a substantial magnetic flux.

Abstract

Dust growth and its associated dynamics play key roles in the first phase of planet formation in young stellar objects (YSOs). Observations have detected signs of dust growth in very young protoplanetary disks. Furthermore, signs of planet formation, gaps in the disk at a distance of several 10 astronomical units (AU) from the central protostar are also reported. From a theoretical point of view, however, it is not clear how planet form at the outer region of a disk despite the difficulty due to rapid inward drift of dust so called radial drift barrier. Here, on the basis of three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of disk evolution with the dust growth, we propose a mechanism named "ash-fall" phenomenon induced by powerful molecular outflow driven by magnetic field which may circumvent the radial drift barrier. We found that the large dust which grows to a size of $\sim \cm$ in the inner region of a disk is entrained by an outflow from the disk. Then large dust decoupled from gas is ejected from the outflow due to centrifugal force, enriching the grown dust in the envelope and is eventually fall onto the outer edge of the disk. The overall process is similar to behaviour of ash-fall from volcanic eruptions. In the ash-fall phenomenon, the Stokes number of dust increases by reaccreting to the less dense disk outer edge. This may make the dust grains overcome the radial drift barrier. Consequently, the ash-fall phenomenon can provide a crucial assist for making the formation of the planetesimals in outer region of the disk possible, and hence the formation of wide-orbit planets and the formation of the gaps., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL, typos in Appendix A are fixed

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next-generation ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray observatory. The Large-Sized Telescope (LST) of CTA is designed to detect gamma rays between 20 GeV and a few TeV with a 23-meter diameter mirror. We have developed the focal plane camera of the first LST, which has 1855 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and the readout system which samples a PMT waveform at GHz with switched capacitor arrays, Domino Ring Sampler ver4 (DRS4). To measure the precise pulse charge and arrival time of Cherenkov signals, we developed a method to calibrate the output voltage of DRS4 and the sampling time interval, as well as an analysis method to correct the spike noise of DRS4. Since the first LST was inaugurated in 2018, we have performed the commissioning tests and calibrated the camera. We characterised the camera in terms of the charge pedestal under various conditions of the night sky background, the charge resolution of each pixel, the charge uniformity of the whole camera, and the time resolutions with a test pulse and calibration laser., 14 pages, 13 figures, Proceedings of the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, 114470H (2020)

Abstract

We report the first high spatial resolution measurement of magnetic fields surrounding LkH$\alpha$ 101, a part of the Auriga-California molecular cloud. The observations were taken with the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope within the framework of the B-fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. Observed polarization of thermal dust emission at 850 $\mu$m is found to be mostly associated with the red-shifted gas component of the cloud. The magnetic field displays a relatively complex morphology. Two variants of the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, unsharp masking and structure function, are used to calculate the strength of magnetic fields in the plane of the sky, yielding a similar result of $B_{\rm POS}\sim 115$ $\mathrm{\mu}$G. The mass-to-magnetic-flux ratio in critical value units, $\lambda\sim0.3$, is the smallest among the values obtained for other regions surveyed by POL-2. This implies that the LkH$\alpha$ 101 region is sub-critical and the magnetic field is strong enough to prevent gravitational collapse. The inferred $\delta B/B_0\sim 0.3$ implies that the large scale component of the magnetic field dominates the turbulent one. The variation of the polarization fraction with total emission intensity can be fitted by a power-law with an index of $\alpha=0.82\pm0.03$, which lies in the range previously reported for molecular clouds. We find that the polarization fraction decreases rapidly with proximity to the only early B star (LkH$\alpha$ 101) in the region. Abstract

We present new observations of the active star formation region NGC 1333 in the Perseus molecular cloud complex from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope B -Fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey with the POL-2 instrument. The BISTRO data cover the entire NGC 1333 complex (∼1.5 pc × 2 pc) at 0.02 pc resolution and spatially resolve the polarized emission from individual filamentary structures for the first time. The inferred magnetic field structure is complex as a whole, with each individual filament aligned at different position angles relative to the local field orientation. We combine the BISTRO data with low- and high- resolution data derived from Planck and interferometers to study the multiscale magnetic field structure in this region. The magnetic field morphology drastically changes below a scale of ∼1 pc and remains continuous from the scales of filaments (∼0.1 pc) to that of protostellar envelopes (∼0.005 pc or ∼1000 au). Finally, we construct simple models in which we assume that the magnetic field is always perpendicular to the long axis of the filaments. We demonstrate that the observed variation of the relative orientation between the filament axes and the magnetic field angles are well reproduced by this model, taking into account the projection effects of the magnetic field and filaments relative to the plane of the sky. These projection effects may explain the apparent complexity of the magnetic field structure observed at the resolution of BISTRO data toward the filament network., Erratum published in volume 899, issue 1, 5 p., April 10 2021. Abstract

We perform a series of three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations to study the evolution of the angle between the protostellar spin and the protoplanetary disk rotation axes (the star-disk angle $\psi_{\rm sd}$) in turbulent molecular cloud cores. While $\psi_{\rm sd}$ at the protostar formation epoch exhibits broad distribution up to $\sim 130^{\circ}$, $\psi_{\rm sd}$ decreases ($\lesssim 20^{\circ}$) in a timescale of $\sim 10^{4}$ yr. This timescale of the star-disk alignment, $t_{\rm alignment}$, corresponds basically to the mass doubling time of the central protostar, in which the protostar forgets its initial spin direction due to the mass accretion from the disk. Values of $\psi_{\rm sd}$ both at $t=10^2$ yr and $t=10^5$ yr after the protostar formation are independent of the ratios of thermal and turbulent energies to gravitational energy of the initial cloud cores: $\alpha=E_{\rm thermal}/|E_{\rm gravity}|$ and $\gamma_{\rm turb}=E_{\rm turbulence}/|E_{\rm gravity}|$. Abstract

In Wada, Tsukamoto, and Kokubo (2019), we proposed for the first time that a new class of planets, "blanets" (i.e., black hole planets), can be formed around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the galactic center. Here, we investigate the dust coagulation processes and physical conditions of the blanet formation outside the snow line ($r_{snow} \sim $ several parsecs) in more detail, especially considering the effect of the radial advection of the dust aggregates. We found that a dimensionless parameter $\alpha = v_t^2/c_s^2$, where $v_t$ is the turbulent velocity and $c_s$ is the sound velocity, describing the turbulent viscosity should be smaller than 0.04 in the circumnuclear disk, to prevent the destruction of the aggregates due to collisions. The formation timescale of blanets $\tau_{GI}$ at $r_{snow}$ is, $\tau_{GI} \simeq$ 70-80 Myr for $\alpha = 0.01-0.04$ and $M_{BH} = 10^6 M_\odot$. The mass of the blanets ranges from $\sim 20 M_E$ to $3000 M_E$ in $r < 4$ pc for $\alpha = 0.02$ ($M_E$ is the Earth mass), which is in contrast with $ 4 M_E-6 M_E$ for the case without the radial advection. Our results suggest that \textit{blanets} could be formed around relatively low-luminosity AGNs ($L_{bol} \sim 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$) during their lifetime ($\lesssim 10^8$ yr)., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJ

Abstract

[Abridged] Filaments and hubs have received special attention recently thanks to studies showing their role in star formation. While the column density and velocity structures of both filaments and hubs have been studied, their magnetic fields (B-field) are not yet characterized. We aim to understand the role of the B-field in the dynamical evolution of the NGC 6334 hub-filament network. We present new observations of the dust polarized emission at 850$\mu$m towards NGC 6334 obtained with the JCMT/POL-2. We study the distribution and dispersion of the polarized intensity ($PI$), the polarization fraction ($PF$), and the B-field angle ($\theta_{B}$). We derive the power spectrum of the intensity and $\theta_{B}$ along the ridge crest. Our analyses show a complex B-field structure when observed over the whole region ($\sim10$ pc), however, at smaller scales ($\sim1$ pc), $\theta_{B}$ varies coherently along the filaments. The observed power spectrum of $\theta_{B}$ can be well represented with a power law function with a slope $-1.33\pm0.23$, which is $\sim20\%$ shallower than that of $I$. This result is compatible with the properties of simulated filaments and may indicate the processes at play in the formation of filaments. $\theta_{B}$ rotates from being mostly perpendicular to the filament crests to mostly parallel as they merge with the hubs. This variation of $\theta_{B}$ may be tracing local velocity flows of matter in-falling onto the hubs. Our analysis suggests a variation of the energy balance along the crests of these filaments, from magnetically critical/supercritical at their far ends to magnetically subcritical near the hubs. We detect an increase of $PF$ towards the high-column density star cluster-forming hubs that may result from the increase of grain alignment efficiency due to stellar radiation from the newborn stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract

We describe a numerical scheme for magnetohydrodynamics simulations of dust-gas mixture by extending smoothed particle magnetohydrodynamics. We employ the single-species particle approach to describe dust-gas mixture with several modifications from the previous studies. We assume that the charged and neutral dusts can be treated as single-fluid and the electro-magnetic force acts on the gas and that on the charged dust is negligible. The validity of these assumption in the context of protostar formation is not obvious and is extensively evaluated. By investigating the electromagnetic force and electric current with terminal velocity approximation, it is found that as the dust size increases, the contribution of dust to them becomes smaller and negligible. We conclude that our assumptions of the electro-magnetic force on the dusts is negligible are valid for the dust size with a d & 10{\mu}m. On the other hand, they do not produce the numerical artifact for the dust a d . 10{\mu}m in envelope and disk where the perfect coupling between gas and dusts realizes. However, we also found that our assumptions may break down in outflow (or under environment with very strong magnetic field and low density) for the dust a d . 10{\mu}m. We conclude that our assumptions are valid in almost all cases where macroscopic dust dynamics is important in the context of protostar formation. We conduct numerical tests of dusty wave, dusty magnetohydrodynamics shock, and gravitational collapse of magnetized cloud core with our simulation code. Abstract

In the published article, we presented high-resolution polarimetry data obtained by using JCMT SCUBA-2/POL-2, and compared them with the larger-scale magnetic structure observed by Planck (Planck Collaboration et al. 2020). There was a miscalculation in the analysis of the Planck data for comparison, and the mean position angle of the Planck magnetic field should be corrected from -40° ± 7° to -48° ± 6°. Thus, we replace the descriptions in the published article as follows. In Section 4.2, paragraph 3, the second sentence should read: "The differences between the orientations of IRAS 4A, IRAS 4B, and IRAS 2A are not statistically significant, but they do show significantly different orientations from those of the global B-field observed by Planck (-48° ± 6°; Section 4.1)." In Section 4.1, paragraph 3, the second line should read: "The Planck B-field orientation shows a smoothly and slowly varying field distribution with a position angle of -48° ± 6° in our observed NGC 1333 area." Accordingly, we replace Figures 4, 5, 9, 10, and 17 to reflect the correct Planck data. As described above, this error of modest magnitude is related only to our derivation of the Planck polarization angle, and the JCMT observation results are unaffected. Therefore, all conclusions drawn in the published article are unchanged even after the above correction is applied. The 1 pc scale magnetic field observed by Planck shows a smooth distribution, and the interstellar magnetic field in molecular clouds increases the complexity significantly on the scale of less than 1 pc.

Abstract

A novel crystalline organic–inorganic hybrid aluminosilicate material was successfully synthesized using methyltrimethoxysilane as a silicon source. Ab initio crystal structure analysis using powder X-ray diffraction data elucidated that this material was composed of the ordered stacking of layered aluminosilicates similar to sodalite-type zeolites and that methyl groups bonded to silicon atoms were arrayed on the inner surface of the interlayer. This material selectively inhaled amphiphilic molecules such as alcohols to open its interlayer distance. It could even breathe ethanol vapor at quite a low pressure and extract ethanol from the aqueous solution.

Abstract

A 38-year-old Japanese man who had undergone clipping surgery for a ruptured aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery 2 days prior, suddenly developed refractory hypernatremia (serum sodium (Na) 156 - 162 mmol/L). Symptoms included low plasma vasopressin, fluctuating urine osmolality (120 - 710 mOsm/kg) and lack of thirst, all suggesting adipsic diabetes insipidus (ADI). Hypernatremia was corrected by scheduled water intake with desmopressin administration. During 1-year follow-up after the surgery, his serum Na level normalized despite the suspension of desmopressin, but neither thirst nor osmolality-dependent vasopressin release recovered. Meanwhile, his urine osmolality shifted to a constant high level. The present case suggests that renal compensatory adaptation, apparently independent of the circulating vasopressin level, plays a major role in water handling in longitudinal ADI. .

Abstract

Evidence-based cinical practice guidelines improve delivery of uniform care to patients with and at risk of developing kidney disease, thereby reducing disease burden and improving outcomes. These guidelines are not well-integrated into care delivery systems in most low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The KDIGO Controversies Conference on Implementation Strategies in LMIC reviewed the current state of knowledge in order to define a road map to improve the implementation of guideline-based kidney care in LMICs. An international group of multidisciplinary experts in nephrology, epidemiology, health economics, implementation science, health systems, policy, and research identified key issues related to guideline implementation. The issues examined included the current kidney disease burden in the context of health systems in LMIC, arguments for developing policies to implement guideline-based care, innovations to improve kidney care, and the process of guideline adaptation to suit local needs. This executive summary serves as a resource to guide future work, including a pathway for adapting existing guidelines in different geographical regions.

Abstract

The prevalence of diabetes around the world has reached epidemic proportions and is projected to increase to 642 million people by 2040. Diabetes is already the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in most developed countries, and the growth in the number of people with ESKD around the world parallels the increase in diabetes. The presence of kidney disease is associated with a markedly elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and death in people with diabetes. Several new therapies and novel investigational agents targeting chronic kidney disease patients with diabetes are now under development. This conference was convened to assess our current state of knowledge regarding optimal glycemic control, current antidiabetic agents and their safety, and new therapies being developed to improve kidney function and cardiovascular outcomes for this vulnerable population.

Abstract

As a natural consequence of the elementary processes of dust growth, we discovered that a new class of planets can be formed around supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We investigated a growth path from sub-micron sized icy dust monomers to Earth-sized bodies outside the "snow line", located several parsecs from SMBHs in low luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In contrast to protoplanetary disks, the "radial drift barrier" does not prevent the formation of planetesimals. In the early phase of the evolution, low collision velocity between dust particles promotes sticking; therefore, the internal density of the dust aggregates decreases with growth. When the porous aggregate's size reaches 0.1--1 cm, the collisional compression becomes effective, and the decrease in internal density stops. Once 10--100 m sized aggregates are formed, they are decoupled from gas turbulence, and the aggregate layer becomes gravitationally unstable, leading to the formation of planets by the fragmentation of the layer, with ten times the mass of the earth. The growth time scale depends on the turbulent strength of the circumnuclear disk and the black hole mass $M_{BH}$, and it is comparable to the AGN's lifetime ($\sim 10^8$ yr) for low mass ($M_{BH} \sim 10^6 M_\odot$) SMBHs., 15 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We present the 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the IC5146 filamentary cloud taken using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) and its associated polarimeter (POL-2), mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), as part of the B-fields In STar forming Regions Observations (BISTRO). This work is aimed at revealing the magnetic field morphology within a core-scale ($\lesssim 1.0$ pc) hub-filament structure (HFS) located at the end of a parsec-scale filament. To investigate whether or not the observed polarization traces the magnetic field in the HFS, we analyze the dependence between the observed polarization fraction and total intensity using a Bayesian approach with the polarization fraction described by the Rice likelihood function, which can correctly describe the probability density function (PDF) of the observed polarization fraction for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data. We find a power-law dependence between the polarization fraction and total intensity with an index of 0.56 in $A_V\sim$ 20--300 mag regions, suggesting that the dust grains in these dense regions can still be aligned with magnetic fields in the IC5146 regions. Our polarization maps reveal a curved magnetic field, possibly dragged by the contraction along the parsec-scale filament. We further obtain a magnetic field strength of 0.5$\pm$0.2 mG toward the central hub using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, corresponding to a mass-to-flux criticality of $\sim$ $1.3\pm0.4$ and an Alfv\'{e}nic Mach number of $, Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

Recent theoretical works suggest that the pebble accretion process is important for planet formation in protoplanetary disks, because it accelerates the growth of planetary cores. While several observations reveal axisymmetric sharp gaps in very young disks, which may be indicative of the existence of planets. We investigate the possibility of planet formation via pebble accretion in much earlier phases, the gravitationally unstable disks of class 0/I young stellar objects. We find that under the conditions of the class 0/I disks, the pebble accretion timescales can be shorter compared to the typical protoplanetary disks due to larger gas and dust accretion rate, but also find that the accretion timescale is not always a decreasing function of the gas accretion rate. By using estimated accretion timescales, we give a required initial mass to form cores of gas giants within the lifetime of class 0/I phases under several parameters, such as radial distances from the host star, gas accretion rates, and dust-to-gas mass ratio. In the most optimistic case, for example the dust-to-gas mass ratio is $f=3f_{\rm solar}$, $\sim10^{-4}M_{\oplus}$ objects at 10 au can grow to $10M_{\oplus}$ cores during the typical lifetime of the class 0/I phases, 0.5 Myr., 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
