Abstract Materials for radiation detection are critically important and urgently demanded in diverse fields, starting from fundamental scientific research to medical diagnostics, homeland security, and environmental monitoring. Low-dimensional halides (LDHs) exhibiting efficient self-trapped exciton (STE) emission with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) have recently shown a great potential as scintillators. However, an overlooked issue of exciton-exciton interaction in LDHs under ionizing radiation hinders the broadening of its radiation detection applications. Here, we demonstrate an exceptional enhancement of exciton-harvesting efficiency in zero-dimensional (0D) Cs3Cu2I5:Tl halide single crystals by forming strongly localized Tl-bound excitons. Because of the suppression of non-radiative exciton-exciton interaction, an excellent α/β pulse-shape-discrimination (PSD) figure-of-merit (FoM) factor of 2.64, a superior rejection ratio of 10−9, and a high scintillation yield of 26 000 photons MeV−1 under 5.49 MeV α-ray are achieved in Cs3Cu2I5:Tl single crystals, outperforming the commercial ZnS:Ag/PVT composites for charged particle detection applications. Furthermore, a radiation detector prototype based on Cs3Cu2I5:Tl single crystal demonstrates the capability of identifying radioactive 220Rn gas for environmental radiation monitoring applications. We believe that the exciton-harvesting strategy proposed here can greatly boost the applications of LDHs materials.

Background: The immune status is closely linked to cancer progression, metastasis, and prognosis. Lipid metabolism, crucial for reshaping immune status, plays a key role in regulating the advancement of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and deserves further investigation. Methods: This study classifies LUAD patients into different immune subtypes based on lipid metabolism-related genes and compares the clinical characteristics among these subtypes. Single-multi COX analysis screens out key genes related to prognosis, and a risk feature and prognostic model are constructed. Cell cloning, scratch, transwell, western blotting and flow cytometry cell cycle analysis to detect the function of key genes. A subcutaneous tumor animal model is used to investigate the in vivo function and molecular mechanisms of key genes. Results: LUAD patients are classified into three immune subtypes, among which C3 subtype has lower immune status and higher frequency of gene mutations, and show lower immunoreactivity in immunotherapy. COX analysis identified a prognostic model for four lipid metabolism factors (IGFBP1, NR0B2, PPARA, and POMC). IGFBP1, a core gene in this model, is highly expressed in the C3 subtype. Functionally, knocking down IGFBP1 significantly inhibits tumor cell cloning, scratch, and migration abilities, and downregulates the expression of cell cycle and EMT-related proteins. Knocking down IGFBP1 significantly inhibits tumor burden (P < 0.05). Mechanistically, knocking down IGFBP1 inhibits the activation of PPARα to regulate tumor cell growth. Conclusions: This study found that lipid metabolism genes are closely related to LUAD, and IGFBP1 may be a key gene in regulating tumor growth and development.

Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) can regulate plant growth and thus modulate the accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, the effect of endogenous IAA on PAHs accumulation and its influencing factors remains unclear. To unravel this, two different IAA expression genotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana, i.e., IAA-underproducing yucca1D [YUC1] mutant and wild type [WT]) were selected and treated with different fluoranthene (Flu) concentrations (0 mg/L [CK], 5 mg/L [Flu5], and 20 mg/L [Flu20]) to reveal the impact mechanism of endogenous IAA on Flu uptake by plants. The results indicated that under Flu5 treatment, the bioconcentration factors (BCF) and translocation factors (TF) of Flu in WT were 41.4 % and 14.3 % higher than those in YUC1. Similarly, under Flu20 treatment, the BCF and TF of Flu in WT were also 42.2 % and 8.2 % higher than those in YUC1. In addition, the BCF and TF were 72.5 % and 35.8 % higher under Flu5 treatment compared to Flu20 treatment for WT, and 73.4 % and 28.6 % higher respectively for YUC1. Moreover, WT exhibited higher plant growth (biomass, root morphology indicators [root length, root area and number of tips]) and IAA content compared to YUC1 under identical Flu treatments. Plant growth and IAA content declined with the increase of Flu concentration in both YUC1 and WT leaves compared with CK treatment. Conversely, in WT roots, root biomass and morphology indicators promoted followed by a decrease as the concentration of Flu increased. Additionally, the antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, POD, and CAT) of WT were 11.1 %, 16.7 %, and 28.9 % higher than those of YUC1 under Flu5 treatment, and 13.6 %, 12.9 %, and 26.5 % higher under Flu20 treatment. Compared with CK treatment, SOD and POD activities promoted with increasing Flu concentration, whereas CAT activities decreased. Variability separation analysis revealed that level of IAA primarily influenced Flu accumulation in WT or under Flu5 treatments, whereas antioxidant enzyme activity primarily affected Flu accumulation in YUC1 or under Flu20 treatments. Exploring the relationship between the IAA synthesis gene YUCCA and IAA levels, alongside Flu accumulation, could yield novel insights into the regulation of PAH accumulation in plants.

Abstract This study aims to quantify meteorological–hydrological drought propagations and examine the potential impacts by climatic variability, LULC change (LULC), and human regulations. An integrated observation-modeling framework quantifies drought propagation intervals and assesses mechanisms influencing hydrological droughts. Meteorological droughts are characterized using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), and hydrological droughts are assessed through the Standardized Streamflow Index (SSI) across diverse climatic zones. Cross-correlation analysis between SPEI and SSI time series identifies the lag time associated with the highest correlation as the drought propagation interval. Mechanisms are investigated via a coupled empirical-process modeling framework incorporating the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Discrepancies between simulated and observed SSI time series help quantify the extent of human regulation impacts on hydrological drought characteristics and propagation. The Yellow River Basin (YRB), divided into six subzones based on climate characteristics, is selected as the case study. Key findings include: (1) Meteorological droughts were extremely severe across most YRB during the 1990s, while the 2000s showed some mitigation primarily due to precipitation increases. (2) Hydrological droughts and propagation times from meteorology to hydrology demonstrated substantial spatiotemporal variability. In general, summer propagation times were shorter than other seasons. (3) Propagation times were shorter in arid regions with cropland or built-up land cover versus grassland and woodland, while the reverse held for humid regions. (4) Human regulations prolonged propagation times, likely due to reservoir regulations designed to overcome water deficits. While the YRB is the focus of this paper, the methodologies and findings are applicable to other regions worldwide to enhance drought forecasting and water resource management. In various hydrological and climatic contexts worldwide.

Abstract Background Expansins (EXP) are important enzymes that are involved in the extension of plant cells and regulation of root configurations, which play important roles in resisting various stresses. As a model medicinal plant, Salvia miltiorrhiza is well recognized for treating coronary heart disease, myocardial infection, and other cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases; however, the SmEXP gene family has not yet been analyzed. Methods The SmEXP family was systematically analyzed using bioinformatics. Quantitative real-time PCR was employed to analyze the tissue expression patterns of the SmEXP family, as well as its expression under abscisic acid (ABA) treatment and abiotic stress. Subcellular localization assay revealed the localization of SmEXLA1, SmEXLB1, and SmEXPA2. Results This study identified 29 SmEXP that belonged to four different subfamilies. SmEXP promoter analysis suggested that it may be involved in the growth, development, and stress adaptation of S. miltiorrhiza. An analysis of the expression patterns of SmEXP revealed that ABA, Cu2+, and NaCl had regulatory effects on its expression. A subcellular localization assay showed that SmEXLA1 and SmEXLB1 were located on the nucleus and cell membrane, while SmEXPA2 was located on the cell wall. Conclusion For this study, the SmEXP family was systematically analyzed for the first time, which lays a foundation for further elucidating its physiological and biological functionality.

Abstract Background Persistent pain is the most reported symptom in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA); however, effective and brief assessment tools are lacking. We validated the Chinese version of the Global Pain Scale (C-GPS) in Chinese patients with RA and proposed a short version of the C-GPS (s-C-GPS). Method The study was conducted using a face-to-face questionnaire survey with a multicenter cross-sectional design from March to December 2019. Patients aged > 18 years who met the RA diagnostic criteria were included. Based on the classical test theory (CTT) and the item response theory (IRT), we assessed the validity and reliability of the C-GPS and the adaptability of each item. An s-C-GPS was developed using IRT-based computerized adaptive testing (CAT) analytics. Results In total, 580 patients with RA (mean age, 51.04 ± 24.65 years; mean BMI, 22.36 ± 4.07 kg/m2), including 513 (88.4%) women, were included. Most participants lived in a suburb (49.3%), were employed (72.2%) and married (91.2%), reported 9–12 years of education (66.9%), and had partial medical insurance (57.8%). Approximately 88.1% smoked and 84.5% drank alcohol. Analysis of the CTT demonstrated that all items in the C-GPS were positively correlated with the total scale score, and the factor loadings of all these items were > 0.870. A significant positive relationship was found between the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the C-GPS. IRT analysis showed that discrimination of the C-GPS was between 2.271 and 3.312, and items 6, 8, 13, 14, and 16 provided a large amount of information. Based on the CAT and clinical practice, six items covering four dimensions were included to form the s-C-GPS, all of which had very high discrimination. The s-C-GPS positively correlated with the VAS. Conclusion The C-GPS has good reliability and validity and can be used to evaluate pain in RA patients from a Chinese cultural background. The s-C-GPS, which contains six items, has good criterion validity and may be suitable for pain assessment in busy clinical practice. Trial registration This cross-sectional study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR1800020343), granted on December 25, 2018.

In this study, a stepwise multifactor vegetation regression analysis (SMVRA) approach was proposed to investigate the interaction of multiple climate factors on vegetative growth in the study area from 2000 to 2020. It was developed by integrating the stepwise linear regression method, Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and Pearson correlation coefficient. SMVRA can be used to intuitively understand the interactive effects of multiple correlated factors (e.g., temperature, precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, and the drought index) upon vegetation. The results show that the resilience of vegetation in the BLR basin is influenced by the severity of drought. Annual changes in SPEI over the BLR basin show an increasing trend, with rates of 3.12 × 10−2. Precipitation and NDVI had a strong positive correlation (p < 0.05), found for 34.93% of the total pixels in the study area. In the BLR basin, vegetation growth is inhibited in the 4 years following a drought event. The area near 800 m is most sensitive to drought events. It provides a theoretical basis for future drought response and effective vegetation restoration in the region.

This study explores the role of endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in modulating plant responses to pollution stress and its effect on pollutant accumulation, with a focus on fluoranthene (Flu) in ryegrass. To elucidate the mechanism, we employed an IAA promoter (α-aminobutyric acid [α-AB]) and an IAA inhibitor (naphthylphthalamic acid [NPA]) to regulate IAA levels and analyze Flu uptake characteristics. The experimental setup included a Flu treatment group (ryegrass with Flu addition) and a control group (ryegrass without Flu). Our findings demonstrate that Flu treatment enhanced IAA content and plant growth in ryegrass compared to the control. The Flu+AB treatment further enhanced these effects, while the Flu+NPA treatment exhibited a contrasting trend. Moreover, Flu+AB treatment led to increased Flu accumulation, in contrast to the inhibitory effect observed with Flu+NPA treatment. Flu treatment also enhanced the activities of key antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT) and increased soluble sugar and protein levels, indicative of enzymatic and nonenzymatic defense responses, respectively. The Flu+AB treatment amplified these responses, whereas the Flu+NPA treatment attenuated them. Significantly, Flu treatment raised H+-ATPase activity compared to the control, an effect further elevated by Flu+AB treatment and diminished by Flu+NPA treatment. A random forest analysis suggested that Flu accumulation dependency varied under different treatments: it relied more on H+-ATPase activity under Flu+AB treatment and more on SOD activity under Flu+NPA treatment. Additionally, Flu+AB treatment boosted the transpiration rate in ryegrass, thereby increasing the Flu translocation factor, a trend reversed by Flu+NPA treatment. This research highlights crucial factors influencing Flu accumulation in ryegrass, offering potential new avenues for controlling the gathering of contaminants within plant systems.

BackgroundCarbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) clinical isolations have rapidly increased in pediatric patients. To investigate a possible health care-associated infections of CRKP in a tertiary pediatric hospital, the circulating clones and carbapenem-resistant pattern between CRKP and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) isolates were compared to classify their epidemiological characteristics. The results will help to identify the epidemic pattern of the CRKP transmission in the hospital.MethodsNinety-six CRKP and forty-eight CRAB isolates were collected in Kunming Children’s Hospital from 2019 through 2022. These isolates were genotyped using repetitive extragenic palindromic-PCR (REP-PCR). Carbapenemase phenotypic and genetic characterization were investigated using a disk diffusion test and singleplex PCR, respectively. In addition, these characteristics of the two pathogens were compared.ResultsThe rates of CRKP and CRAB ranged from 15.8% to 37.0% at the hospital. Forty-nine and sixteen REP genotypes were identified among the 96 and 48 CRKP and CRAB isolates tested, respectively. The CRKP isolates showed more genetic diversity than the CRAB isolates. Of the 96 CRKP isolates, 69 (72%) produced Class B carbapenemases. However, all 48 CRAB isolates produced Class D carbapenemase or extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) combined with the downregulation of membrane pore proteins. Furthermore, the carbapenemase genes blaKPC, blaIMP, and blaNDM were detected in CRKP isolates. However, CRAB isolates were all positive for the blaVIM, blaOXA-23, and blaOXA-51 genes.ConclusionsThese CRKP isolates exhibited different biological and genetic characteristics with dynamic changes, suggesting widespread communities. Continuous epidemiological surveillance and multicenter research should be carried out to strengthen the prevention and control of infections.

Abstract How the soil bacterial communities vary with elevation is context-dependent, and the effect of soil translocation between elevations on bacterial community structure and metabolic function was not fully understood yet. Here, the bacterial community composition and diversity at five elevations along a 1600–3000 m elevation gradient on a mountainside in northwest Sichuan were characterized, and the responses of soil bacterial community to simulated climate changes were further studied by soil translocation reciprocally at three elevations for 12 months. Significant differences were found in soil temperature and moisture at different elevations, but there was no observed change in bacterial alpha diversity. The relative abundance of bacterial phyla was significantly different among the five elevations except for Proteobacteria (the dominant bacterial phyla in five elevation), and most bacterial phyla correlated with soil temperature, moisture, pH and soil bulk density. The direct effect of soil properties (pH, soil nutrients and soil bulk density) on soil bacterial community was stronger than the direct effect of temperature and moisture. Soil translocation changed the relative abundance of some bacterial phyla, and taxonomic groups with significant changes were mainly non-dominant phyla rather than the dominant phyla. Metabolism was the primary function of bacterial community at all elevations, which accounted for ~ 80% of relative abundance, and soil translocation had little effect on metabolic function. These findings indicated that soil bacterial dominant taxa and soil bacterial metabolic functions are relatively stable, which contribute to the stability of the ecosystem when response to the climate change in the future.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a life-threatening disease characterized by severe pulmonary fibrosis, for which there is an urgent need for effective therapeutic agents. Mefloquine (Mef) is a quinoline compound primarily used for the treatment of malaria. However, high doses (>25 mg/kg) may lead to side effects such as cardiotoxicity and psychiatric disorders. Here, we found that low-dose Mef (5 mg/kg) can safely and effectively treat IPF mice. Functionally, Mef can improve the pulmonary function of IPF mice (PIF, PEF, EF50, VT, MV, PENH), alleviating pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis by inhibiting macrophage activity. Mechanically, Mef probably regulates the Jak2/Stat3 signaling pathway by binding to the 492HIS site of Potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily H member 2 (KCNH2) protein in macrophages, inhibiting the secretion of macrophage inflammatory and fibrotic factors. In summary, Mef may inhibit macrophage activity by binding to KCNH2 protein, thereby slowing down the progress of IPF.

The use of electric furnace ferronickel slag (FNS) as a supplementary cementitious material is the current focus of research. This study investigates the effect of mechanical grinding and chemical additives on the activity excition of FNS, as well as the associated synergistic mechanisms. This study shows that the addition of triethanolamine (TEA) increases the fine-grained content in FNS powder, which facilitates the depolymerization of FNS and the early hydration of aluminum tricalcium. Furthermore, the addition of Ca(OH)2 raises the alkalinity of the cementitious system, which promotes the availability of Ca2+ ions and accelerates the hydration process, resulting in the generation of additional hydration products. The enhancement of late hydration of C3S by TEA and its combination with the secondary hydration of Ca2+ at high alkalinity are the pivotal factors to improve the strength of cementitious composite. A mixture of FNS and 0.03% TEA is subjected to grinding for 90 min, using the obtained micropowder which replaces 20% of the cement, and subsequently, after being excited with 3% Ca(OH)2, the FNS micropowder reaches the quality standards of S95 slag powder. It is worth remarking that the micropowder prepared by mixing FNS with 3% Ca(OH)2 and 0.03% TEA and grinding it for 81 min also meets the S95 standard for slag powder. The larger dosage of FNS in cement is supported by the observed synergy between TEA and Ca(OH)2. This research will provide valuable insights for the expanded application of FNS in construction materials.

Background This study investigated the experiences of front-line healthcare workers who had been in close contact with COVID-19 patients and had been quarantined in order to provide guidance on quarantine measures with more humanistic care when dealing with future public health emergencies.Methods We conducted a qualitative study using semistructured, qualitative, in-depth interviews between April and June 2022. The interviews were recorded and transcribed, followed by a thematic analysis. The study followed the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research.Results This study identified the following four themes: (1) personal psychological changes, (2) increased reflection on life and work during quarantine, (3) the important role of others’ support and (4) different types of demands during quarantine and isolation. Each theme is supported by several subthemes that further illustrate the participants’ experiences.Conclusions Quarantine of close contacts is necessary to prevent outbreaks. Front-line doctors and nurses are at a greater risk of COVID-19 infection than others. The results showed the psychological reactions of ordinary close contacts, and the unique feelings and experiences of doctors and nurses during the epidemic. Therefore, future research should cooperate with multiple departments to assess their needs, provide them with individualised care and love and give them incentives in order to reduce their psychological burden, improve their quality of life and allow them to engage in healthcare with a healthy mind.

Melting furnace slag (MFS) is a potentially active by-product of the synergistic treatment of iron and steel dust sludge and Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) incineration fly ash in the flue gas magnetization fusion separator furnace of the “fire method + wet method”. This paper focuses on the MFS reactivated by mechanical grinding, and the reactivity of MFS is synergistically enhanced by alkaline, sulfate-based solid wastes. The particle size distribution, specific surface area, morphology, and physical phase composition of MFS with different grinding times resulted in the best performance of MFS when mechanically ground for 80 min and the specific surface area reached 450 m2/kg, and the reactivity indexes reached 100.94% and 103.7% for 7 and 28 d, respectively. The synergistic activation of steel slag and flue-gas desulfurization gypsum can play an effective role in stimulating the MFS, and the optimal proportion is m (MFS): m (SS): m (FGDG) = 42%: 42%: 16%. The reactivity enhancement mechanism of the ternary slag-based system on MFS: SS provides high alkalinity hydration reaction conditions for MFS and FGDG provides SO42−, which continuously promotes the hydrolysis of MFS under the synergistic reactivity stimulation to generate AFt and C–S–H gels.

Abstract The alteration of cellular energy metabolism is a hallmark of colorectal cancer (CRC). Accumulating evidence has suggested oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) is upregulated to meet the demand for energy in tumor initiation and development. However, the role of OXPHOS and its regulatory mechanism in CRC tumorigenesis and progression remain unclear. Here, we reveal that Prohibitin 2 (PHB2) expression is elevated in precancerous adenomas and CRC, which promotes cell proliferation and tumorigenesis of CRC. Additionally, knockdown of PHB2 significantly reduces mitochondrial OXPHOS levels in CRC cells. Meanwhile, NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit S1 (NDUFS1), as a PHB2 binding partner, is screened and identified by co-immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry. Furthermore, PHB2 directly interacts with NDUFS1 and they co-localize in mitochondria, which facilitates NDUFS1 binding to NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit V1 (NDUFV1), regulating the activity of complex I. Consistently, partial inhibition of complex I activity also abrogates the increased cell proliferation induced by overexpression of PHB2 in normal human intestinal epithelial cells and CRC cells. Collectively, these results indicate that increased PHB2 directly interacts with NDUFS1 to stabilize mitochondrial complex I and enhance its activity, leading to upregulated OXPHOS levels, thereby promoting cell proliferation and tumorigenesis of CRC. Our findings provide a new perspective for understanding CRC energy metabolism, as well as novel intervention strategies for CRC therapeutics.

Abstract Background AT1 receptor gene (AGTR1) is related to essential hypertension (EH), and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and arterial stiffness are common complications of EH. This study aimed to explore the association between AGTR1 genotype and LVH and arterial stiffness in EH patients. Methods A total of 179 EH patients were recruited in this study. Oral exfoliated cells were collected from each patient, and the genetic polymorphism of AGTR1(rs4524238) was assessed using a gene sequencing platform. The outcomes were LVH and arterial stiffness. Results Among 179 patients, 114 were with AGTR1 genotype of GG (57 males, aged 59.54 ± 13.49 years) and 65 were with AGTR1 genotype of GA or AA (36 males, aged 61.28 ± 12.79 years). Patients with AGTR1 genotype of GG were more likely to have LVH (47 [41.23%] vs. 14 [21.54%], P = 0.006) and arterial stiffness (30 [26.32%] vs. 8 [12.31%], P = 0.036). The AGTR1 polymorphism frequency was in accordance with Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (P = 0.291). The multivariate logistic regression showed that AGTR1 genotype of GA or AA was independently associated with lower risk of LVH (OR = 0.344, 95%CI 160~0.696, P = 0.003) and arterial stiffness (OR = 0.371, 95%CI 0.155~0.885, P = 0.025) after adjusting for gender, age, and diabetes. Conclusion EH patients with the AGTR1 genotype of GA or AA were at lower risk for LVH and arterial stiffness than those with the GG genotype.

Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most lethal cancers worldwide. Donafenib is a multi‐receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor approved for the treatment of patients with advanced HCC, but its clinical effect is very limited. Here, through integrated screening of a small‐molecule inhibitor library and a druggable CRISPR library, that GSK‐J4 is synthetically lethal with donafenib in liver cancer is shown. This synergistic lethality is validated in multiple HCC models, including xenograft, orthotopically induced HCC, patient‐derived xenograft, and organoid models. Furthermore, co‐treatment with donafenib and GSK‐J4 resulted in cell death mainly via ferroptosis. Mechanistically, through integrated RNA sequencing (RNA‐seq) and assay for transposase‐accessible chromatin with high throughput sequencing (ATAC‐seq) analyses, that donafenib and GSK‐J4 synergistically promoted the expression of HMOX1 and increased the intracellular Fe2+ level is found, eventually leading to ferroptosis. Additionally, through cleavage under targets & tagmentation followed by sequencing (CUT&Tag‐seq), it is found that the enhancer regions upstream of HMOX1 promoter significantly increased under donafenib and GSK‐J4 co‐treatment. A chromosome conformation capture assay confirmed that the increased expression of HMOX1 is caused by the significantly enhanced interaction between the promoter and upstream enhancer under dual‐drug combination. Taken together, this study elucidates a new synergistic lethal interaction in liver cancer.

Fluoranthene (Flu) uptake by plants is affected by plant growth and environmental concentration. Although plant growth processes, including substance synthesis and antioxidant enzyme activities, have been reported to regulate Flu uptake, their contributions have been poorly evaluated. Moreover, the effect of Flu concentration is little known. Here, low concentrations (0, 1, 5, and 10 mg/L) and high concentrations (20, 30, and 40 mg/L) of Flu were set to compare the changes in Flu uptake by ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). Indices of plant growth (biomass, root length, root area, root tip number, and photosynthesis and transpiration rates), substance synthesis (indole acetic acid [IAA] content), and antioxidant enzyme activities (superoxide dismutase [SOD], peroxidase [POD], and catalase [CAT]) were recorded to unravel the mechanism of Flu uptake. Findings suggested that the Langmuir model fitted Flu uptake by ryegrass well. Flu absorption capacity in the root was stronger than that that in the leaf. Flu bioconcentration and translocation factors increased then reduced with the increase in Flu concentration and reached the maximum value under 5 mg/L Flu treatment. Plant growth and IAA content had the same pattern as before bioconcentration factor (BCF). SOD and POD activities increased then decreased with Flu concentration and reached their highest levels under 30 and 20 mg/L Flu treatments, respectively, whereas CAT activity decreased continuously and reached its lowest level under 40 mg/L Flu treatment. Variance partitioning analysis indicated that IAA content had the greatest significant effect on Flu uptake under low-concentration Flu treatments, whereas antioxidant enzyme activities had the greatest significant effect on Flu uptake under high-concentration Flu treatments. Revealing the concentration-dependent mechanisms of Flu uptake could provide a basis for regulating pollutant accumulation in plants.

Abstract Low‐dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid manganese(II) halides are emerging as a highly promising class of candidate materials for X‐ray imaging due to their excellent radioluminescence performance. Here, a red‐emitting (Gua)2MnCl4 (Gua = guanidine, CH6N3+) single crystal scintillator grown by a simple solution‐processing method is reported. (Gua)2MnCl4 crystallizes into a zero‐dimensional (0D) crystal structure consisting of trimeric [Mn3Cl12]6− units. It has a high PLQY of 76% and a large Stokes shift of 125 nm. (Gua)2MnCl4 flexible scintillation screen demonstrates a decent X‐ray detection limit of 145.3 nGyair s−1 and a superior imaging resolution of 8 lp mm−1. These results highlight the potential of low‐dimensional red‐emitting Mn‐based hybrids for X‐ray imaging applications.

Investigating systematic meteorological–agricultural–hydrological drought propagation within an integrated watershed framework is crucial yet challenging for advancing robust early warning systems and targeted resilience strategies. To address this gap, this study employs the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), standardized soil moisture index (SSMI), and nonlinear joint hydrological drought index (NJHDI) to characterize meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological drought, respectively. Utilizing the strongest correlation method, variations in the propagation time along moisture movement pathways within the system are quantified using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The Yellow River basin (YRB) is selected as the case study area. Key results reveal distinct seasonal patterns in meteorological–agricultural propagation across the basin, with escalated spring and summer timescales. However, weaker correlations and limited seasonality emerge for agricultural–hydrological linkages due to sustaining baseflow buffers. Specifically, the arid and semiarid region exhibited shorter propagation time with 1–5 months, while the semiarid and semihumid region displayed longer timescales with 7–12 months. These findings provide valuable scientific references for enhancing real-time early warning systems tailored to coupled watershed systems. The integrated methodology underscores the importance of unraveling fine-scale spatiotemporal propagation variability for localized drought resilience.

The primary innovation of this study lies in the development of an integrated modeling framework that combines downscaled climate projections, land-use-change simulations, and copula-based risk analysis. This framework allows for the assessment of localized sub-seasonal and seasonal drought hazards under future scenarios. The BCC-CSM1-1 climate model projections from the NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections (NEX-GDDP) dataset are utilized to represent the future climate for 2025–2060 under RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios. The CA-Markov model is employed to predict future land-use-change distributions. The climate–land use–drought modeling nexus enables the generation of refined spatio-temporal projections of meteorological and hydrological drought risks in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) in the future period of 2025–2060. The results highlight the increased vulnerability of the upper YRB to sub-seasonal meteorological droughts, as well as the heightened sub-seasonal hydrological drought risks in the Loess Plateau. Furthermore, downstream areas experience escalated seasonal hydrological drought exposure due to urbanization. By providing actionable insights into localized future drought patterns, this integrated assessment approach advances preparedness and climate adaptation strategies. The findings of the study enhance our understanding of potential changes in this integral system under the combined pressures of global climate change and land use shifts.

The sense of agency (SoA) refers to the feeling of being in control of one’s actions and the subsequent consequence of these actions. Emotional context seems to alter the strength of sense of agency. The present study explored the influence of acute psychosocial stress on the SoA by means of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Self-assessment manikin (SAM) and objective physiological indicators (e.g. heart rate, electrodermal activity, and salivary cortisol levels) were utilized to evaluate the effect of the TSST. We also employed the temporal binding effect as an implicit assessment of the participant’s SoA. The results indicated that the stress level of the experimental group after TSST was significantly higher than the control group, whilst the temporal binding scores of the experimental group decreased after TSST manipulation. In short, acute psychosocial stress with intense emotional arousal weakened the sense of agency.

Objectives Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may experience body image disorders, which can adversely affect their physical and mental health. We aimed to assess the body-image-related quality of life of patients with SLE, explore the influencing factors and determine the potential predictors of body image disturbance (BID) in these patients.Design Cross-sectional study.Setting The department of rheumatology and immunology in Nantong.Participants A convenience sample of 230 patients with SLE.Interventions The study survey included an assessment of demographic information and evaluations using the Body Image Disturbance questionnaire (BIDQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20 and Body Image Quality of Life Inventory (BIQLI).Primary and secondary outcome measures BID scores and their possible predictors. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlational analysis and stepwise multiple linear regression analysis.Results The mean BIDQ score and the mean scores for anxiety, depression and fatigue were 23.04 (SD, SD=11.90), 6.94 (SD=4.53), 6.49 (SD=4.51) and 54.21 (SD=11.63), respectively. The mean BIQLI score was 0.31 (SD=16.59). Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi is a medicinal plant in the Lamiaceae family that contains high levels of 4’-deoxyflavone and other flavonoids in its roots. Therefore, it has strong potential as a plant resource for researching the biosynthesis of specific flavonoids. In this study, we report on a chromosome-level S. baicalensis genome assembled to nine chromosomes (376.81M) using PacBio, HiSeq XTen, and Hi-C assisted assembly. The assembly ratio was 99.22%, the contig N50 was 1.80 million bases, and the scaffold N50 was 40.57 million bases, with 31896 genes being annotated. Comparative genome analysis revealed that S. baicalensis and Salvia miltiorrhiza belonged to the same branch, and diverged 36.3 million years ago. Other typically correlated species were Boea hygrometrica and Sesamum indicum. We investigated the structural genes involved in flavonoid synthesis in combination with transcriptome sequencing analysis for different tissues (roots, stems, flowers, leaves) of purple, pink, and white flowers. The results revealed that S.baiF6H is involved in the accumulation of baicalein and was significantly increased in both purple roots vs. pink roots and white roots vs. pink roots. S.baiMYB gene family expression pattern analysis and co-expression network analysis revealed that S.baiMYB transcription factors primarily regulated the production of flavonoids in S. baicalensis. S.baiMYB serves as a major factor regulating flavonoid synthesis in the roots, where yeast one-hybrid assays revealed that these transcription factors could bind to the promoter regions of structural genes to control the accumulation of flavonoids. Genome and transcriptome sequencing, co-expression analysis, and yeast one-hybrid experiments provided valuable genetic resources for understanding flavonoid biosynthesis in S. baicalensis. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the accumulation of metabolites in Lamiaceae.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease with depression as one of its most common symptoms. The aim of this study is to establish a nomogram prediction model to assess the occurrence of depression in patients with SLE. Based on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale cutoff of 8, 341 patients with SLE, recruited between June 2017 and December 2019, were divided into depressive and non-depressive groups. Data on socio-demographic characteristics, medical history, sociopsychological factors, and other risk factors were collected. Between-group differences in clinical characteristics were assessed with depression as the dependent variable and the variables selected by logistic multiple regression as predictors. The model was established using R language. Marital status, education, social support, coping, and anxiety predicted depression (p < 0.05). The nomogram prediction model showed that the risk rate was from 0.01 to 0.80, and the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the area under the curve was 0.891 (p < 0.001). The calibration curve can intuitively show that the probability of depression predicted by the nomogram model is consistent with the actual comparison. The designed nomogram provides a highly predictive assessment of depression in patients with SLE, facilitating more comprehensive depression evaluation in usual clinical care.

Zero-valent iron (ZVI) and rice husk (RH) have potential as adsorbents for heavy metals; however, their effects on iron plaque formation and heavy metal uptake by plants are still unclear. In this study, the impacts of ZVI, RH and their combinations on iron plaque formation on the root surface and the uptake of As and Cd by rice plants were investigated. A pot experiment was performed under waterlogged conditions using As(III)- or Cd(II)-spiked soil. The results showed that ZVI (0.05% or 0.2%) with or without RH significantly increased iron plaque formation and Fe contents in rice plants and pore water. Under As treatment, ZVI (0.05% or 0.2%) without or with RH obviously increased the As content in plaques and reduced the As content in grains by 67% and 66% and 19% and 24%, respectively. The Cd content was markedly increased in iron plaques and reduced in roots, shoots and grains by ZVI and RH. ZVI (0.05% or 0.2%), RH and their combinations reduced the grain Cd content by 61, 62, 60, 68 and 69%. These findings suggest that ZVI is effective in hindering As and Cd uptake by rice with or without RH in paddies contaminated with As or Cd.

Applications of the key plant nutrient nitrogen (N) increase the uptake and accumulation of pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, it is unclear how a plant’s preference for a particular form of N in the soil affects the uptake and accumulation of PAHs. In this study, we investigated the physiological mechanisms involved in fluoranthene uptake by rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and examined how these mechanisms were affected by different forms of N treatment under an equivalent N supply. Both N form and plant species affected plant fluoranthene uptake. Rice accumulated more fluoranthene than wheat under an equivalent N supply, while the transfer coefficient of fluoranthene in wheat was higher than that in rice. Fluoranthene accumulation in rice and wheat was positively correlated with plant root morphology parameters, and the transfer coefficient was positively correlated with transpiration. Of the treatments examined, ammonium (NH4+-N)-treated rice and nitrate (NO3−-N)-treated wheat accumulated the most fluoranthene at equivalent N supply. Fluoranthene accumulation was positively correlated with plant growth, total nitrogen N content, total protein content, and antioxidant enzyme activities. Based on a partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) analysis, total plant N was the main factor influencing fluoranthene uptake by rice and wheat treated with different forms of N. Overall, ammonium-preferring rice and nitrate-preferring wheat had the highest nutrient content in their preferred N forms, which also promoted fluoranthene uptake. Therefore, regulating the form of N applied to the soil could be a suitable strategy to improve the safety of agricultural products.

BackgroundJuvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a common chronic rheumatic disease with no known cures, affecting children with the age of onset under 16 years. Patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures are an important basis for evaluating the impact of JIA and associated therapies, however, which is particular challenge in the pediatric setting. At present, no randomized controlled studies have investigated the effect and usability of ePROs symptom management for children with JIA.MethodsThis longitudinal, randomized, controlled trial will be carried out at outpatient and pediatric wards of the Shanghai Children's Medical Center affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. A total of one hundred children with JIA diagnosed according to the International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR) patients are randomized to receive individualized symptom management based on ePROs or routine management. The primary outcome is the mean C-Ped-PROMIS T-scores of patients in the ePROs-based group and the control group. The secondary outcomes are the trajectories of C-Ped-PROMIS T-scores and HRQOL scores, and changing relationship between them. Frequent droughts may have negative influences on the ecosystem (i.e., terrestrial vegetation) under a warming climate condition. In this study, the linear regression method was first used to analyze trends in vegetation change (normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)) and drought indices (Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI)). The Pearson Correlation analysis was then used to quantify drought impacts on terrestrial vegetation in the Weihe River Basin (WRB); in particular, the response time of vegetation to multiple time scales of drought (RTVD) in the WRB was also investigated. The trend analysis results indicated that 89.77% of the area of the basin showed a significant increasing trend in NDVI from 2000 to 2019. There were also significant variations in NDVI during the year, with the highest rate in June (0.01) and the lowest rate in January (0.002). From 2000 to 2019, SPI and SPEI at different time scales in the WRB showed an overall increasing trend, which indicated that the drought was alleviated. The results of correlation analysis showed that the response time of vegetation to drought in the WRB from 2000 to 2019 was significantly spatially heterogeneous. For NDVI to SPEI, the response time of 12 months was widely distributed in the north; however, the response time of 24 months was mainly distributed in the middle basin. The response time of NDVI to SPI was short and was mainly concentrated at 3 and 6 months; in detail, the response time of 3 months was mainly distributed in the east, while a response time of 6 months was widely distributed in the west. In autumn and winter, the response time of NDVI to SPEI was longer (12 and 24 months), while the response time of NDVI to SPI was shorter (3 months). From the maximum correlation coefficient, the response of grassland to drought (SPEI and SPI) at different time scales (i.e., 6, 12, and 24 months) was higher than that of cultivated land, forestland, and artificial surface. The results may help improve our understanding of the impacts of climatic changes on vegetation cover.

Polyurethane (PU) is a polymer widely used in the biomedical field with excellent mechanical properties and good biocompatibility. However, it usually exhibits poor antibacterial properties for practical applications. Efforts are needed to improve the antibacterial activities of PU films for broader application prospect and added application values. In the present work, two PU films, TDI-P(E-co-T) and TDI-N-100-P(E-co-T), were prepared. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were composited into the TDI-N-100-P(E-co-T) film for better mechanical properties and antibacterial activities, and resultant PU/AgNPs composite film was systematically characterized and studied. The as-prepared PU/AgNPs composite film exhibits much better antibacterial properties than the traditional PU membrane, exhibiting broader application prospect.

We propose a two-dimensional model of biochemical activation process, whereby self-propelling particles of finite correlation times are injected at the center of a circular cavity with constant rate equal to the inverse of their lifetime; activation is triggered when one such particle hits a receptor on the cavity boundary, modeled as a narrow pore. We numerically investigated this process by computing the particle mean-first exit times through the cavity pore as a function of the correlation and injection time constants. Due to the breach of the circular symmetry associated with the positioning of the receptor, the exit times may depend on the orientation of the self-propelling velocity at injection. Stochastic resetting appears to favor activation for large particle correlation times, where most of the underlying diffusion process occurs at the cavity boundary.

B-box (BBX) is a type of zinc finger transcription factor that contains a B-box domain. BBX transcription factors play important roles in plant photomorphogenesis, signal transduction, as well as abiotic and biological stress responses. However, the BBX gene family of Salvia miltiorrhiza has not been systematically investigated to date. For this study, based on the genomic data of Salvia miltiorrhiza, 27 SmBBXs genes were identified and clustered into five evolutionary branches according to phylogenetic analysis. The promoter analysis suggested that SmBBXs may be involved in the regulation of the light responses, hormones, stress signals, and tissue-specific development. Based on the transcriptome data, the expression patterns of SmBBXs under different abiotic stresses and plant hormones were analyzed. The results revealed that the expressions of the SmBBXs genes varied under different conditions and may play essential roles in growth and development. The transient expression analysis implied that SmBBX1, SmBBX4, SmBBX9, SmBBX20, and SmBBX27 were in the nucleus. A transcriptional activation assay showed SmBBX1, SmBBX4, SmBBX20, and SmBBX24 had transactivation activities, while SmBBX27 had none. These results provided a basis for further research on the role of SmBBXs in the development of Salvia miltiorrhiza.

We numerically investigated the diffusion of a heavy active Brownian particle in a linear periodic array of steady planar counter-rotating convection rolls at high Péclet numbers. We show that, under certain conditions, the particle rises to the surface even if it is denser than the suspension fluid, and floats there for exceedingly long times. Such an apparently counterintuitive phenomenon of “enhanced buoyancy” is a combined effect of gravity, advection, and shear torque.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) changes in quantity and quality over time and space, especially in highly dynamic coastal estuaries. Bacterioplankton usually display seasonal and spatial variations in abundance and composition in the coastal regions, and influence the DOM pool via assimilation, transformation and release of organic molecules. The change in DOM can also affect the composition of bacterial community. However, little is known on the correspondence between DOM molecules and bacterial composition, particularly through a systematic field survey. In this study, the spatiotemporal signatures of microbial communities and DOM composition in the subtropical coastal estuary of Xiamen are investigated over one and half years. The co-occurrence analysis between bacteria and DOM suggested microorganisms likely transformed the DOM from a relatively high (>400 Da) to a low (

Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is one of the most famous traditional Chinese medicinal plants. The two most important classes of pharmaceutically relevant compounds in S. miltiorrhiza are phenolic acids and tanshinones. The MYB family of transcription factors may efficiently regulate the secondary metabolism in plants. In this study, a subgroup 4 R2R3MYB transcription factor gene, SmMYB4, was isolated from S. miltiorrhiza and functionally characterized using overexpression and a RNAi-mediated silencing. We achieved a total of six overexpressions and eight RNAi transgenic lines from the Agrobacterium leaf disc method. The content of the total phenolics, rosmarinic acid, and salvianolic acid B markedly decreased in the SmMYB4-overexpressing lines but increased in the SmMYB4-RNAi lines. The content of the total tanshinones, cryptotanshinone, and tanshinone IIA decreased in the SmMYB4-overexpressing transgenic lines but increased in the SmMYB4-RNAi lines. A gene expression analysis demonstrated that SmMYB4 negatively regulated the transcription of the critical enzyme genes involved in the phenolic acid and tanshinone biosynthesis. The genetic control of this transcriptional repressor may be used to improve the content of these bioactive compounds in the cultivated S. miltiorrhiza.

Abstract In this paper, we study a stage-structured predator–prey model incorporating refuge for prey and additional food for predator. By analyzing the corresponding characteristic equations, we investigate the local stability of equilibria and the existence of Hopf bifurcation at the positive equilibrium taking the time delay as a bifurcation parameter. Furthermore, we obtain the direction of the Hopf bifurcation and the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions applying the center manifold theorem and normal form theory. Numerical simulations are illustrated to verify our main results.

A unique immunotolerant microenvironment with Th2 bias in the decidua provides an essential security for successful pregnancy. The disorganized maternal-fetal immune tolerance contributes to more than 50% of unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). How the Th2 bias is developed at the maternal-fetal interface remains undefined. NR2F2, a member of steroid/thyroid nuclear receptor superfamily, is endowed with diverse importance in cell-fate specification, organogenesis, angiogenesis, and metabolism. Here, we showed that NR2F2 was absolutely highly expressed in decidual CD4+T(dCD4+T) cells, but not in peripheral circulating CD4+T cells during early pregnancy. Decidual NR2F2-expressing CD4+T cells dominantly produced Th2 cytokines. In unexplained RSA patients, NR2F2 expression in dCD4+T cells was significantly decreased, accompanied with disordered phenotype of dCD4+T cells. Furthermore, overexpression of NR2F2 promoted the Th2 differentiation of naive CD4+T cells. Immunoprecipitation experiment confirmed the binding relationship between GATA-3 and NR2F2, which implied GATA-3 may be an important interactive element involved in the immunoregulatory process of NR2F2. This study is the first to reveal a previously unappreciated role for NR2F2-mediated dCD4+T cells in maternal-fetal immune tolerance and maintenance of normal pregnancy, in the hope of providing a potential biomarker for prediction and prevention of clinical unexplained RSA.

Precipitation is the primary source of water available to vegetation. Although many studies have explored the spatially heterogeneous relationship between vegetation and precipitation, it remains unknown why different precipitation levels lead to comparable vegetation growth and the same precipitation level leads to different vegetation growth. Here we provided a simple, new parameterized calculation method to describe the precipitation-vegetation relation. The new method characterizes the ability of local precipitation to supply the water needed for vegetation growth. In the case of China, the method can explain vegetation growth better than the common indices that represent water supply, such as the SPEI, the PDSI, and soil moisture. We further explored what induces the differences in the capacity of soil to redistribute local precipitation for vegetation growth by examining the sensitivity of the residual value between actual vegetation growth and theoretical precipitation-determined vegetation growth to water storage-related soil properties. Our results indicate that soil texture and soil depth to bedrock rather than climatic factors predicted the above mentioned residual values, which implies that soil water storage capacity can increase or decrease the amount of local precipitation needed for vegetation growth. Soil physical properties that involve a high clay content and a thickness between 1 and 3 m are favorable for the stored precipitation fraction for vegetation growth. Neglecting this effect of soil water storage capacity may introduce inaccuracies when simulating the impact of future climate change on vegetation growth.

Blast furnace slag (BFS), steel slag (SS), and flue gas desulfurized gypsum (FGDG) were used to prepare metallurgical slag-based binder (MSB), which was afterwards mixed with high-antimony-containing mine tailings to form green mining fill samples (MBTs) for Sb solidification/stabilization (S/S). Results showed that all MBT samples met the requirement for mining backfills. In particular, the unconfined compressive strength of MBTs increased with the curing time, exceeding that of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Moreover, MBTs exhibited the better antimony solidifying properties, and their immobilization efficiency could reach 99%, as compared to that of OPC. KSb(OH)6 was used to prepare pure MSB paste for solidifying mechanism analysis. Characteristics of metallurgical slag-based binder (MSB) solidified/stabilized antimony (Sb) were investigated via X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). According to the results, the main hydration products of MSB were C-S-H gel and ettringite. Among them, C-S-H gel had an obvious adsorption and physical sealing effect on Sb, and the incorporation of Sb would reduce the degree of C-S-H gel polymerization. Besides, ettringite was found to exert little impact on the solidification and stabilization of Sb. However, due to the complex composition of MSB, it was hard to conclude whether Sb entered the ettringite lattice.

Hydropower plant operation reorganizes the temporal and spatial distribution of water resources to promote the comprehensive utilization of water resources in the basin. However, a lot of uncertainties were brought to light concerning cascade hydropower plant operation with the introduction of the stochastic process of incoming runoff. Therefore, it is of guiding significance for the practice operation to investigate the stochastic operation of cascade hydropower plants while considering runoff uncertainty. The runoff simulation model was constructed by taking the cascade hydropower plants in the lower reaches of the Lancang River as the research object, and combining their data with the copula joint function and Gibbs method, and a Markov chain was adopted to construct the transfer matrix of runoff between adjacent months. With consideration for the uncertainty of inflow runoff, the stochastic optimal operation model of cascade hydropower plants was constructed and solved by the SDP algorithm. The results showed that 71.12% of the simulated monthly inflow of 5000 groups in the Nuozhadu hydropower plant drop into the reasonable range. Due to the insufficiency of measured runoff, there were too many 0 values in the derived transfer probability, but after the simulated runoff series were introduced, the results significantly improved. Taking the transfer probability matrix of simulated runoff as the input of the stochastic optimal operation model of the cascade hydropower plants, the operation diagram containing the future-period incoming water information was obtained, which could directly provide a reference for the optimal operation of the Nuozhadu hydropower plant. In addition, taking the incoming runoff process in a normal year as the standard, the annual mean power generation based on stochastic dynamic programming was similar to that based on dynamic programming (respectively 305.97 × 108 kW⋅h and 306.91 × 108 kW⋅h), which proved that the operation diagram constructed in this study was reasonable.

The composition and change of runoff are closely related to climate change and human activities. To design effective watershed water resources management measures, there is a need for a clear understanding of the impact of climate change and human activities on baseflow and surface runoff. The purpose of this essay is to quantify their impact on the annual total stream flow, surface runoff, and base flow in the Weihe River Basin (WRB) using a two-stage annual precipitation partitioning method, wherein the surface runoff and base flow are separated from the measured total flow by using a one-parameter digital filter method for which the common filter parameter value is 0.925. The stream flow records were split into two periods: 1960–1970 (pre-change period) and 1971–2005 (post-change period) based on the hydrological breakpoints detected. We found that climate change and human activities have different impacts on base flow and surface runoff. We attributed the decrease in surface runoff due to climate change accounting for 76–78%, while we determined that human activities were responsible to the decrease in base flow accounting for 59–73% of the total observed change. We concluded that both climate change and human beings contributed to the hydrologic change through different hydrological processes: climate change dominated the surface runoff change, while human influences controlled the base flow change. To achieve the expected goals of ecological restoration, appropriate measures must be taken by watershed management in the WRB to mitigate the likely impacts of climate change on water hydrology.

We numerically investigate the transport of a Brownian colloidal particle in a square array of planar counter-rotating convection rolls at high Péclet numbers. We show that an external force produces huge excess peaks of the particle’s diffusion constant with a height that depends on the force orientation and intensity. In sharp contrast, the particle’s mobility is isotropic and force independent. We relate such a nonlinear response of the system to the advection properties of the laminar flow in the suspension fluid.

The diffusion of an artificial active particle in a two-dimensional periodic pattern of stationary convection cells is investigated by means of extensive numerical simulations. In the limit of large Péclet numbers, i.e., for self-propulsion speeds below a certain depinning threshold and weak rototranslational fluctuations, the particle undergoes asymptotic normal diffusion with diffusion constant proportional to the square root of its diffusion constant at zero flow. Chirality effects in the propulsion mechanism, modeled here by a tunable applied torque, favors particle jumping between adjacent convection rolls. Roll jumping is signaled by an excess diffusion peak, which appears to separate two distinct active diffusion regimes for low and high chirality. A qualitative interpretation of our simulation results is proposed as a first step toward a fully analytical study of this phenomenon.

Previous studies have shown reduced expression of Src homology 2-containing inositol 5-phosphatase 2 (SHIP2) and its tumor-suppressive role in gastric cancer (GC). However, the precise role of SHIP2 in the migration and invasion of GC cells remains unclear. Here, an IQ motif containing the GTPase-activating protein 2 (IQGAP2) as a SHIP2 binding partner, was screened and identified by co-immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry studies. While IQGAP2 ubiquitously expressed in GC cells, IQGAP2 and SHIP2 co-localized in the cytoplasm of GC cells, and this physical association was confirmed by the binding of IQGAP2 to PRD and SAM domains of SHIP2. The knockdown of either SHIP2 or IQGAP2 promoted cell migration and invasion by inhibiting SHIP2 phosphatase activity, activating Akt and subsequently increasing epithelial−mesenchymal transition (EMT). Furthermore, knockdown of IQGAP2 in SHIP2-overexpressing GC cells reversed the inhibition of cell migration and invasion by SHIP2 induction, which was associated with the suppression of elevated SHIP2 phosphatase activity. Moreover, the deletion of PRD and SAM domains of SHIP2 abrogated the interaction and restored cell migration and invasion. Collectively, these results indicate that IQGAP2 interacts with SHIP2, leading to the increment of SHIP2 phosphatase activity, and thereby inhibiting the migration and invasion of GC cells via the inactivation of Akt and reduction in EMT.

In this study, lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) specimens with different plastics-steel fibre volumes were tested to investigate the effect of plastics-steel fibre fraction on the mechanical properties of LWAC through the experimental research and theoretical analysis. The experimental results indicated that incorporation of steel fibre into LWAC can greatly improve such mechanical properties as flexural toughness and impact resistance, but leads to a little effect on compressive strength and flexural strength.

Previous studies have demonstrated that mindfulness practice can improve general cognitive control. However, little research has examined whether mindfulness practices affect different cognitive control strategies. According to the dual mechanisms of control (DMC) model, different cognitive control strategies may play distinct roles in individuals’ lives. Proactive control allows people to maintain and prepare for goals, whereas reactive control allows them to respond flexibly to a changing environment. Thus, this study investigates the influences of mindfulness training on proactive and reactive control measured by the AX version of the Continuous Performance Test (AX-CPT). Thirty participants completed AX-CPT and the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) before and after random assignment to either an 8-week mindfulness training group or a control group. The results showed no interaction between group and test time for AY or BX trial type, but the training group had fewer post-test errors on the BX trial and a higher Behavior Shift Index (BSI) of reaction time (RT) compared with the control group. This finding indicates enhanced trend of proactive control with mindfulness training. A positive correlation between the BSI of RT and observing scores on the FFMQ confirmed the connection between attentional components in mindfulness and proactive control. Errors on the AY trial in the post-test decreased in both groups, reflecting reactive control that did not differ between groups. The 8-week mindfulness training demonstrates a potential improvement effect on proactive control and could be helpful in overcoming interference.

Previous studies on the joint effect of reward motivation and emotion on memory retrieval have obtained inconsistent results. Furthermore, whether and how any such joint effect might vary over time remains unclear too. Accordingly, using the event-related potential (ERP) measurement of high temporal resolution, our study investigates the cognitive and brain mechanisms of monetary reward and emotion affecting the retrieval processes of episodic memory. Twenty undergraduate and graduate students participated in the research, and our study’s behavioral results indicated that reward (relative to no reward) and negative emotion (relative to positive and neutral emotion) significantly improved recognition performance. The ERP results showed that there were significant interactions between monetary reward and emotion on memory retrieval, and the reward effects of positive, neutral, and negative memory occurred at varied intervals in mean amplitude. The reward effect of positive memory appeared relatively early, at 260–330 ms after the stimulus onset in the frontal-frontocentral area, at 260–500 ms in the centroparietal-parietal area and at 500–700 ms in the frontocentral area. However, the reward effects of neutral and negative memory occurred relatively later, and that of negative memory appeared at 500–700 ms in the frontocentral and centroparietal area and that of neutral memory was at 500–700 ms in the frontocentral and centroparietal-parietal area. Meanwhile, significant FN400 old/new effects were observed in the negative and rewarded positive items, and the old/new effects of negative items appeared earlier at FN400 than positive items. Also, significant late positive component (LPC) old/new effects were found in the positive, negative, and rewarded neutral items. These results suggest that, monetary reward and negative emotion significantly improved recognition performance, and there was a mutual influence between reward and emotion on brain activity during memory retrieval.

A Brownian particle floating in a narrow corrugated (sinusoidal) channel with fluctuating cross section exhibits non-Gaussian normal diffusion. Its displacements are distributed according to a Gaussian law for very short and asymptotically large observation times, whereas a robust exponential distribution emerges for intermediate observation times of the order of the channel fluctuation correlation time. For intermediate to large observation times, the particle undergoes normal diffusion with one and the same effective diffusion constant. These results are analytically interpreted without having recourse to heuristic assumptions. Such a simple model thus reproduces recent experimental and numerical observations obtained by investigating complex biophysical systems.
