A manganese dioxide (MnO2)/bamboo carbon (BC) composite was prepared using hydrothermal and impregnation methods and used for the capacitive desalination (CDI) and disinfection of water. The results showed that these composites had fast Na+ ion exchange and charge transfer properties. During the CDI process, these composites’ electrodes exhibited good cycle stability and electrosorption capacity (4.09 mg/g) and an excellent bactericidal effect. These carbon-based composite electrodes’ bactericidal rate for Escherichia coli could reach 99.99% within 180 min; therefore, they had good performance and are a good choice for high-performance deionization applications.

Abstract Brown carbon (BrC) exhibits a highly complex chemical composition with diverse light‐absorbing properties, which complicates our understanding of its climate impacts. This study examined the impact of molecular characteristics (including molecular mass, unsaturation, oxidation state, and polarity) and heteroatoms on the light‐absorbing properties (absorptivity and wavelength dependence) of BrC from a molecular perspective, based on the ultraviolet‐visible spectra of over 40,000 light‐absorbing substances in aerosol from different sources and ambience. Our findings reveal that the light‐absorptivity of BrC molecules increases with decreasing polarity and O/C ratio, while it rises with higher molecular mass and unsaturation. We developed predictive models for molecular absorptivity based on its double bond equivalent and O/C ratio. In addition, we observed an inverse correlation between absorptivity and wavelength dependence at the molecular level, as determined through mathematical analysis. This molecular‐level understanding provides valuable insights into BrC absorbing mechanisms, facilitating more accurate characterization in atmospheric models.

Abstract The proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzer has been considered a versatile approach for practical H2 production. However, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid media with complicated proton‐coupled electron transfer steps possesses sluggish kinetics and high reaction barriers, severely hindering the development of PEM water electrolyzers. Consequently, high‐efficient Ru‐ and Ir‐based catalysts have always been essential to accelerate the OER rate and lower the reaction barrier in PEM water electrolyzer. Therefore, it is very necessary to construct low‐cost catalysts with excellent electrocatalytic performances to replace these noble metal‐based OER electrocatalysts. In this review paper, a detailed discussion towards fundamentally comprehending the reaction mechanisms of OER was conducted. Accordingly, we proposed the principles of designing advanced OER electrocatalysts with enhanced performances and lowered costs. After that, recent developments in designing various acidic OER electrocatalysts were summarized. Meanwhile, the available regulation strategies about noble metals, nonprecious metals, and metal‐free nanomaterials were presented, which are promising for tuning the electronic structures, boosting the electrocatalytic performances, and reducing the costs of electrocatalysts. We also provided the existing challenges and perspectives of various OER electrocatalysts, hoping to promote the development of PEM water electrolyzers.

Abstract Cooking oil fumes (COFs) represent a major indoor environmental pollutant and exhibit potent mutagenic or carcinogenic health effects caused by containing various heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) and long-chain aldehydes. Despite some evaluation of the cumulative exposure of COFs to cancer cells under high concentration were evaluated, their biological adverse effects with low-dose exposure to healthy cells had been inadequately investigated. Herein, we firstly scrutinized the three selected typically toxic compounds of heterocyclic amine 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP), 3,8-dimethylammidazo[4,5-f]quinoxalin-2-amine (MeIQx) and trans, trans-2,4-decadienal (TDA)) emitted from COFs. In vitro studies revealed that the PhIP, MeIQx and TDA aerosol particles were negligible toxicity to cancer cells (A549 and HepG-2) but strong cytotoxicity to normal healthy cells (HelF and L02) under 0.5–4 μg/mL low dose exposure based on the reactive oxygen species (ROS) mechanism. In vivo studies demonstrated that PhIP caused significant lung and liver damage after exposure to PhIP for 30 days with mice. These results indicated the direct proof of healthy cell damage even at low-dose exposure to HAAs and aldehydes.

The electric field distortion and charge accumulation in cable accessories are still challenges for high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC). Using silicone rubber (SR) based materials with nonlinear conductivity properties can ameliorate these problems in cable accessories. Herein, SR composites with hybrid filler network were prepared by adding graphene (G; 0.25 phr) and alumina particles (Al2O3; 5–40 phr) to SR to obtain good nonlinear conductivity and relative high breakdown strength, along with thermal conductivity. The SEM results showed that graphene was well dispersed between Al2O3 particles and a hybrid filler network was constructed in the SR matrix. The G/Al2O3/SR composites exhibited favorable nonlinear electrical conductivity properties and thermal conductivity properties while sustaining high breakdown strength under different electrical and temperature field. The non-linear conductivity α of the 0.25G/40Al2O3/SR composite reached 6.68 at 23 °C, whereas the breakdown field strength E0 of 49.1 kV/mm could comparable to that of pure SR. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of 0.25G/30Al2O3/SR was 0.28 Wm−1K−1 at 23 °C, which increased by 114.98% compared to pure SR. This work suggests the promising application of G/Al2O3/SR composites as cable accessory.

In the present work, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from vehicle exhaust and cooking fumes were investigated via simulation experiments, which covered engine emissions produced during gasoline direct injection (GDI) using two kinds of fuels and cooking emissions produced by preparing three domestic dishes. The distinct characteristics of VOCs emitted during the two processes were identified. Alkanes (73% mass fraction on average) and aromatics (15% on average) dominated the vehicle VOCs, while oxygenated VOCs (49%) and alkanes (29%) dominated the cooking VOCs. Isopentane (22%) was the most abundant species among the vehicle VOCs. N-hexanal (20%) dominated the cooking VOCs. The n-hexanal-to-n-pentanal ratio (3.68 ± 0.64) was utilized to identify cooking VOCs in ambient air. The ozone formation potential produced by cooking VOCs was from 1.39 to 1.93 times higher than that produced by vehicle VOCs, which indicates the significant potential contribution of cooking VOCs to atmospheric ozone. With the equivalent photochemical age increasing from 0 h to 72 h, the secondary organic aerosol formation by vehicle VOCs was from 3% to 38% higher than that of cooking VOCs. Controlling cooking emissions can reduce SOA pollution in a short time due to its higher SOA formation rate than that of vehicle VOCs within the first 30 h. However, after 30 h of oxidation, the amount of SOAs formed by vehicle exhaust emissions exceeded the amount of SOAs produced by cooking activities, implying that reducing vehicle emissions will benefit particle pollution for a longer time. Our results highlight the importance of VOCs produced by cooking fumes, which has not been given much attention before. Further, our study suggested that more research on semi-volatile organic compounds produced by cooking emissions should be conducted in the future.

Abstract Nowadays, it is still technologically challenging to prepare highly sensitive sensing films using microelectrical mechanical system (MEMS) compatible methods for miniaturized sensors with low power consumption and high yield. Here, sensitive cross-linked SnO2:NiO networks were successfully fabricated by sputtering SnO2:NiO target onto the etched self-assembled triangle polystyrene (PS) microsphere arrays and then ultrasonically removing the PS microsphere templates in acetone. The optimum line width (~ 600 nm) and film thickness (~ 50 nm) of SnO2:NiO networks were obtained by varying the plasma etching time and the sputtering time. Then, thermal annealing at 500 °C in H2 was implemented to activate and reorganize the as-deposited amorphous SnO2:NiO thin films. Compared with continuous SnO2:NiO thin film counterparts, these cross-linked films show the highest response of ~ 9 to 50 ppm ethanol, low detection limits (

Abstract High concentration ozone can damage greatly to the respiratory, cardiovascular systems, and fertility of people, and catalytic decomposition is an important strategy to reduce its harm. However, it remains a challenge to develop efficient ozone decomposition catalysts with high efficiency. In this study, p- and n-type silicon nanowires (Si NWs) are fabricated by wet chemical etching method and are firstly applied to catalytic decompose ozone at room temperature. The p-type Si NWs exhibit 90% ozone (20 ppm O3/air) decomposition efficiency with great stability, which is much better than that of n-type Si NWs (50%) with same crystal orientation, similar diameter and specific surface area. The catalytic property difference is mainly attributed to the more delocalization holes in the p-type Si NWs, which can accelerate the desorption of ozone decomposition intermediates (i.e., adsorbed oxygen species).

In this study, a rubber-composite-nanoparticle-modified epoxy powder composite coating with low curing temperature and high toughness was successfully fabricated. The effects of N,N-dimethylhexadecylamine (DMA) carboxy-terminated nitrile rubber (CNBR) composite nanoparticles on the microstructure, curing behavior, and mechanical properties of epoxy-powder coating were systematically investigated. SEM and TEM analysis revealed a uniform dispersion of DMA-CNBR in the epoxy-powder coating, with average diameter of 100 nm. The curing temperature of the epoxy-composite coatings had reduced almost 19.1% with the addition of 1phr DMA-4CNBR into the coating. Impact strength tests confirmed that DMA-CNBR-modified epoxy-composite coatings showed significant improvements compared with the neat EP coating, which was potentially attributed to the nanoscale dispersion of DMA-CNBR particles in epoxy coatings and their role in triggering microcracks. Other mechanical properties, including adhesion and cupping values, were improved in the same manner. In addition, thermal and surface properties were also studied. The prepared epoxy composite powder coating with the combination of low curing temperature and high toughness broadened the application range of the epoxy coatings.

The salt hydrate heat storage phase change material (PCM) has a promising prospect of application and has become a research hotspot because of the advantages of high thermal storage density, high thermal conductivity, moderate phase change temperature, and low price. However, some problems have restricted the application of salt hydrate heat storage materials, such as phase separation, supercooling, and corrosion of the metal container. A microencapsulated PCM using the microencapsulated technology of solid PCM coated packaging with core-shell structure composite material is an effective method to solve the above problems. In this paper, the research situations involving microencapsulated salt hydrate are analysed. This review introduces the selection of core and shell materials, compares the different preparation methods of encapsulated salt hydrate PCMs and summarizes the application fields.

Abstract Although significant developments have been made in the low-concentration formaldehyde monitoring in indoor air by using gas sensors, they still suffer from insufficient performance for achieving ppb-level detection. In this work, oriented Si nanowires (SiNWs) with high specific surface area were prepared via metal-assisted chemical etching method (MACE), and then were uniformly coated with graphene oxide (GO) followed by the subsequent reductive process in H2/Ar atmosphere at 800 °C to obtain reduced graphene oxide (RGO). The RGO coating (RGO@n-SiNWs) obviously enhances SiNWs sensitivity to low-concentration formaldehyde, benefiting from the increased specific surface area, the sensitization effect of RGO, and the formation of p-n junction between SiNWs and RGO. Specifically, RGO@n-SiNWs exhibits a high response of 6.4 to 10 ppm formaldehyde at 300 °C, which is about 2.6 times higher than that of pristine SiNWs (~ 2.5). Furthermore, the RGO@n-SiNWs show a high response of 2.4 to 0.1 ppm formaldehyde which is the largest permissive concentration in indoor air, a low detection limit of 35 ppb obtained by non-linear fitting, and fast response/recovery times of 30 and 10 s. In the meanwhile, the sensor also shows high selectivity over other typical interfering gases such as ethanol, acetone, ammonia, methanol, xylene, and toluene, and shows a high stability over a measurement period of 6 days. These results enable the highly sensitive, selective, and stable detection of low-concentration formaldehyde to guarantee safety of indoor environment.

The decontamination of radioactive materials on the surfaces of nuclear facilities has generated large quantities of waste from the rapid development of the nuclear industry, posing a potential threat globally. Strippable coating has been employed for some time to remove radioactive contamination due to its high performance and removability, flexibility, and compatibility with various substrates. Herein, an aqueous strippable coating based on an adsorbent/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer was developed to remove radioactive uranium from stainless-steel surfaces that showed greater decontamination than that of DeconGel, with an efficiency of 87.2% for 5 g/L uranium and 95.5% for 22.5 g/L uranium, along with a high repeatability and better mechanical properties. Furthermore, the prepared coating was versatile and could be applied to a range of substrate surfaces (lacquered, aluminum, glass, plastic, and ceramic), with outstanding performance ranging from 79.2 to 95.4% for 1 g/L uranium. The prepared coating could also be applied through brushing or spraying to horizontal or vertical substrates. The exceptional performance could be due to the synergistic effect of the introduction of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na) as a chelating agent and the nano-adsorbent CaCO3/TiO2.

Abstract Recently, owing to the large surface-area-to-volume ratio of nanowires (NWs), manipulation of their surface states becomes technologically important and being investigated for various applications. Here, an in-situ surfactant-assisted chemical vapor deposition is developed with various chalcogens (e.g. S, Se and Te) as the passivators to enhance the NW growth and to manipulate the controllable p-n conductivity switching of fabricated NW devices. Due to the optimal size effect and electronegativity matching, Se is observed to provide the best NW surface passivation in diminishing the space charge depletion effect induced by the oxide shell and yielding the less p-type (i.e. inversion) or even insulating conductivity, as compared with S delivering the intense p-type conductivity for thin NWs with the diameter of ~30 nm. Te does not only provide the surface passivation, but also dopes the NW surface into n-type conductivity by donating electrons. All of the results can be extended to other kinds of NWs with similar surface effects, resulting in careful device design considerations with appropriate surface passivation for achieving the optimal NW device performances.

Mn-doped CeO2 and CeO2 with the same morphology (nanofiber and nanocube) have been synthesized through hydrothermal method. When applied to benzene oxidation, the catalytic performance of Mn-doped CeO2 is better than that of CeO2, due to the difference of the concentration of O vacancy. Compared to CeO2 with the same morphology, more oxygen vacancies were generated on the surface of Mn-doped CeO2, due to the replacement of Ce ion with Mn ion. The lattice replacement has been analyzed through XRD, Raman, electron energy loss spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance technology. The formation energies of oxygen vacancy on the different exposed crystal planes such as (110) and (100) for Mn-doped CeO2 were calculated by the density functional theory (DFT). The results show that the oxygen vacancy is easier to be formed on the (110) plane. Other factors influencing catalytic behavior have also been investigated, indicating that the surface oxygen vacancy plays a crucial role in catalytic reaction.

Effective heat dissipation has become a critical issue for electronic devices. In this study, the silicone rubber (SR)/vertically aligned boron nitride (BN) composites were prepared and the thermal conductivity of the composites was systematically investigated. The vertically aligned BNs constructed effective vertical thermal conductive pathways in the SR matrix, and the SR/ABN composites exhibited much higher through-plane thermal conductivity compared to the non-orientated SR/BN composite. The through-plane thermal conductivity of SR/ABN150 reached 5.4 W m−1 K−1, which was ~6.3 and ~33 times higher than those of SR/BN150 and pure SR, respectively. In addition, the surface thermal infrared analysis also indicates that the vertically aligned SR/ABN composites possess excellent heat transfer capacity during the heating and cooling processes. The obtained results exhibit the potential for the design and preparation of thermal interface materials (TIMs) with high through-plane thermal conductivity to be applied in thermal conductive and electrical insulating field. Capacitive deionization (CDI) with water disinfection materials is a potential method to produce fresh water from aqueous solutions. Therefore, an ordered mesoporous carbon with chitosan (OMC-CS) was coated on the active carbon (AC) electrode as a capacitive deionization disinfection (CDI) electrode. Comparing with OMC-CS-4,6,8 as CDI electrodes, it was found that OMC-CS-6 as a CDI electrode had an excellent disinfection efficiency, killing about 99.99% Escherichia coli (E. coli) in the CDI process at an applied 1.2 V. The OMC-CS material was did not pollute the water and will not contaminate to the environment in comparison with other chemical antibacterial agents. This CDI electrode could play a huge role in biocontaminated water in the future.

Currently, it is challenging to develop new catalysts for semiconductor nanowires (NWs) growth in a complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible manner via a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism. In this study, chemically synthesized Cu2O nano cubes are adopted as the catalyst for single crystalline β-Ga2O3 NWs growth in chemical vapor deposition. The growth temperature is optimized to be 750 to 800 °C. The NW diameter is controlled by tuning the sizes of Cu2O cubes in the 20 to 100 nm range with a bandgap of ~4.85 eV as measured by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. More importantly, the catalyst tip is found to be Cu5As2, which is distinguished from those Au-catalyzed Au-Ga alloys. After a comprehensive phase diagram investigation, the β-Ga2O3 NWs are proposed to be grown by the ternary phase of Cu-As-Ga diffusing Ga into the growth frontier of the NW, where Ga react with residual oxygen to form the NWs. Afterward, Ga diminishes after growth since Ga would be the smallest component in the ternary alloy. All these results show the importance of the catalyst choice for CMOS compatible NW growth and also the potency of the ternary phase catalyst growth mode in other semiconductor NWs synthesis.

The catalytic activities of CeO2-MnOx composite oxides synthesized through oxalate method were researched. The results exhibited that the catalytic properties of CeO2-MnOx composite oxides were higher than pure CeO2 or MnOx. When the Ceat/Mnat ratio was 3:7, the catalytic activity reached the best. In addition, the activities of CeO2-MnOx synthesized through different routes over benzene oxidation were also comparative researched. The result indicated that the catalytic property of sample prepared by oxalate method was better than others, which maybe closely related with their meso-structures. Meanwhile, the effects of synergistic interaction and oxygen species in the samples on the catalytic ability can’t be ignored.

Photovoltaics (PVs) based on nanostructured III/V semiconductors can potentially reduce the material usage and increase the light-to-electricity conversion efficiency, which are anticipated to make a significant impact on the next-generation solar cells. In particular, GaAs nanowire (NW) is one of the most promising III/V nanomaterials for PVs due to its ideal bandgap and excellent light absorption efficiency. In order to achieve large-scale practical PV applications, further controllability in the NW growth and device fabrication is still needed for the efficiency improvement. This article reviews the recent development in GaAs NW-based PVs with an emphasis on cost-effectively synthesis of GaAs NWs, device design and corresponding performance measurement. We first discuss the available manipulated growth methods of GaAs NWs, such as the catalytic vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) and vapor-solid-solid (VSS) epitaxial growth, followed by the catalyst-controlled engineering process, and typical crystal structure and orientation of resulted NWs. The structure-property relationships are also discussed for achieving the optimal PV performance. At the same time, important device issues are as well summarized, including the light absorption, tunnel junctions and contact configuration. Towards the end, we survey the reported performance data and make some remarks on the challenges for current nanostructured PVs. These results not only lay the ground to considerably achieve the higher efficiencies in GaAs NW-based PVs but also open up great opportunities for the future low-cost smart solar energy harvesting devices.

Low concentration acetone gas detection is significantly important for diabetes diagnosis as 1.8–10 ppm of acetone exists in exhaled breath from diabetes patients. A new interlocking p+n field-effect transistor (FET) circuit has been proposed for Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles (MZO) to detect the acetone gas at low concentration, especially close to 1.8 ppm. It is noteworthy that MZO in this interlocking amplification circuit shows a low voltage signal of 4.0 V to >2 ppm acetone. In other words, the response to acetone from 1 ppm to 2 ppm increases by ~1233%, which is competent to separate diabetic patients from healthy people. Moreover, the response to 2 ppm acetone is hardly influenced by high relative humidity of 85%. In the meanwhile, MZO in this interlocking circuit possesses a high acetone selectivity compared to formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, toluene and ethanol, suggesting a promising technology for the widespread qualitative screening of diabetes. Importantly, this interlocking circuit is also applicable to other types of metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors. The resistance jump of p- and n-FETs induced by the change of their gate voltages is deemed to make this interlocking circuit produce the transilient response.

Nowadays, the detection of low concentration combustible methane gas has attracted great concern. In this paper, a coupling p+n field effect transistor (FET) amplification circuit is designed to detect methane gas. By optimizing the load resistance (RL), the response to methane of the commercial MP-4 sensor can be magnified ~15 times using this coupling circuit. At the same time, it decreases the limit of detection (LOD) from several hundred ppm to ~10 ppm methane, with the apparent response of 7.0 ± 0.2 and voltage signal of 1.1 ± 0.1 V. This is promising for the detection of trace concentrations of methane gas to avoid an accidental explosion because its lower explosion limit (LEL) is ~5%. The mechanism of this coupling circuit is that the n-type FET firstly generates an output voltage (VOUT) amplification process caused by the gate voltage-induced resistance change of the FET. Then, the p-type FET continues to amplify the signal based on the previous VOUT amplification process.

Abstract In this paper, ZnS one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures including tetrapods, nanorods, nanobelts, and nanoslices were selectively synthesized by using RF thermal plasma in a wall-free way. The feeding rate and the cooling flow rate were the critical experimental parameters for defining the morphology of the final products. The detailed structures of synthesized ZnS nanostructures were studied through transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscope. A collision-controlled growth mechanism was proposed to explain the growth process that occurred exclusively in the gas current by a flowing way, and the whole process was completed in several seconds. In conclusion, the present synthetic route provides a facile way to synthesize ZnS and other hexagonal-structured 1D nanostructures in a rapid and scalable way.

Deviacer guangxiensis Chen & Manchester sp. nov. is described based on asymmetric samaras from the Oligocene Ningming Formation in Guangxi, South China, representing the first documentation of Deviacer fossils in Asia. The Oligocene species, with relatively large fruits, represents the youngest record of the genus so far known; all other records are from the Paleocene and Eocene, or late Eocene-early Oligocene in western North America and Europe. It indicates that the extinct genus, Deviacer, was widely distributed in the northern hemisphere during the Paleogene.

Pure In2O3 nanoparticles are prepared by a facile precipitation method and are further modified by Ag. The synthesized samples are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman and UV-Vis spectra. The results show the successful heterojunction formation between Ag and In2O3. Gas sensing property measurements show that the 5 mol % Ag-modified In2O3 sensor has the response of 67 to 50 ppm ethanol, and fast response and recovery time of 22.3 and 11.7 s. The response is over one magnitude higher than that of pure In2O3, which can be attributed to the enhanced catalytic activity of Ag-modified In2O3 as compared with the pure one. The mechanism of the gas sensor can be explained by the spillover effect of Ag, which enhances the oxygen adsorption onto the surface of In2O3 and thus give rise to the higher activity and larger surface barrier height.
