An 18-month-old male cat presented with pollakiuria and hematuria. It had experienced misty urination and dampness around the genital area since the age of three months. Physical examination displayed small preputial and urethral openings, and subcutaneous cryptorchidism. Blood tests revealed elevated levels of blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, potassium, and phosphate. Radiography revealed a distended bladder. Castration and perineal urethrostomy were conducted to correct subcutaneous cryptorchidism and relieve urinary incontinence due to meatal stenosis and phimosis. Normal postoperative urination was observed; no complications were reported during the follow-up. This case highlights the successful surgical intervention of meatal stenosis concurrent with phimosis.

Background: After the eradication of smallpox, there have been no specific public health measures for any Orthopoxviruses (OPXVs). Therefore, it is necessary to countermeasure OPXV infections after Mpox (formerly monkeypox) occurrences, such as the latest global outbreak in 2022–2023. This study aimed to provide crucial insights for the development of effective public health policy making against mpox in populations residing in regions where the virus is not prevalent. Methods: This study used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) to examine smallpox and mpox antibodies in Koreans with three different age groups. We analyzed 56 sera obtained from a tertiary care hospital in South Korea between September 2022 and April 2023. Plasma levels of antibodies against the viral proteins of smallpox (variola cytokine response-modifying protein B) and MPXV (A29) were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Results: Plasma samples from participants in their early 40 s and older exhibited higher reactivity to viral antigens than those from younger participants. Furthermore, there was a strong positive correlation in antibody positivity for the two different viruses across the sera. Conclusions: The presence of low antibody levels in participants ˂40 years may hinder their ability to defend against OPXV. Therefore, it is imperative to implement effective public health measures to mitigate the transmission of OPXV within the community. These findings serve as fundamental information for devising strategies to combat mpox efficiently, particularly in regions where the virus is not prevalent.

Abstract Hard ticks are known vectors of various pathogens, including the severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus, Rickettsia spp., Coxiella burnetii, Borrelia spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Ehrlichia spp. This study aims to investigate the distribution and prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in southwestern Korea from 2019 to 2022. A total of 13,280 ticks were collected during the study period, with H. longicornis accounting for 86.1% of the collected ticks. H. flava, I. nipponensis and A. testudinarium comprised 9.4%, 3.6%, and 0.8% of the ticks, respectively. Among 983 pools tested, Rickettsia spp. (216 pools, 1.6% MIR) were the most prevalent pathogens across all tick species, with R. japonica and R. monacensis frequently detected in I. nipponensis and Haemaphysalis spp., respectively. Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between handgrip strength (HGS) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), demonstrating HGS as an effective indicator for evaluating HRQoL of patients with cancer. Analyzing 1657 Korean adult cancer patients (644 males, 1013 females) aged ≥ 20 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2014–2019), HGS was standardized based on body mass index and categorized by sex. HRQoL was assessed using the Euro Quality of Life-5-Dimension 3-Level version (EQ-5D-3L) Index. Lower relative HGS was associated with decreased HRQoL in female patients, while no significant association was found in male patients. Abstract The emergence of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) has ushered in the era of big data. The demand for low‐power hardware systems and efficient algorithms has become more imperative. In this study, an ultra‐low‐power dynamic memtransistor based on the charge storage junction Field‐Effect Transistor (FET) with a step‐wise potential barrier is developed. A simple yet efficient device structure allows for analog programming and spontaneous relaxation. The device demonstrated fast speed (tens of nanoseconds (ns)) and low current (in picoamperes (pA)), resulting in ultra‐low programming power (in attojoules (aJ)). Furthermore, the device exhibited high reliability, with a 0.4% cycle‐to‐cycle variation and endurance over 107 pulses, owing to its non‐structural destructive operation process. An operation scheme is developed that enables read on/off and program/inhibition mode for 2T (1 memtransistor‐1 selecting transistor) array. The capability to distinguish temporal data using the device's spontaneous relaxation characteristics is demonstrated. A reservoir computing (RC) system framework is constructed using simulation and verified that the dynamic memtransistor can extract features efficiently from a hand‐written digit dataset. It is anticipated that the developed dynamic memtransistor, with its distinctive temporal characteristics, will play a pivotal role in developing a novel low‐power computing framework.

Abstract Background Annually, 175.4 million people are infected with scabies worldwide. Although parasitic infections are important nosocomial infections, they are unrecognized compared to bacterial, fungal, and viral infections. In particular, nonspecific cutaneous manifestations of scabies lead to delayed diagnosis and frequent nosocomial transmission. Hospital-based studies on the risk factors for scabies have yet to be systematically reviewed. Methods The study followed the PRISMA guidelines and was prospectively registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023363278). Literature searches were conducted in three international (PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL) and four Korean (DBpia, KISS, RISS, and Science ON) databases. We included hospital-based studies with risk estimates calculated with 95% confidence intervals for risk factors for scabies infection. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Two authors independently performed the screening and assessed the quality of the studies. Results A total of 12 studies were included. Personal characteristics were categorized into demographic, economic, residential, and behavioral factors. The identified risk factors were low economic status and unhygienic behavioral practices. Being a patient in a long-term care facility or institution was an important factor. Frequent patient contact and lack of personal protective equipment were identified as risk factors. For clinical characteristics, factors were categorized as personal health and hospital environment. People who had contact with itchy others were at higher risk of developing scabies. Patients with higher severity and those with a large number of catheters are also at increased risk for scabies infection. Conclusions Factors contributing to scabies in hospitals range from personal to clinical. We emphasize the importance of performing a full skin examination when patients present with scabies symptoms and are transferred from settings such as nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, to reduce the transmission of scabies. In addition, patient education to prevent scabies and infection control systems for healthcare workers, such as wearing personal protective equipment, are needed.

Abstract Excessive alcohol consumption has been consistently linked to depression. This study, utilizing nationwide samples from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n = 21,440) examined the association between drinking behaviors and depressive symptoms while also exploring the influence of sleep duration on this relationship. Demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related factors were included as covariates in the multivariable logistic regression analysis to assess their relationships with depressive symptoms. Based on their sleep duration, the participants were divided into subgroups to explore how sleep duration affects the relationship between drinking behaviors and depressive symptoms. Moderate alcohol consumption (1–4 times a month) was associated with reduced likelihood of experiencing depressive symptoms in women (p = 0.024), with a similar trend observed among men (p = 0.001). Men who started consuming alcohol before the age of 19 had a higher likelihood of experiencing depressive symptoms (p = 0.048). Only women who consumed more alcohol per occasion (≥ 7 drinks) had higher odds of depressive symptoms (p = 0.001). This study revealed complex factors that influence depressive symptoms, including alcohol consumption and sleep duration. This highlights the importance of tailored interventions based on sleep duration and sociodemographic characteristics for preventing and treating depression.

While implementing a construction project, production-rate assessment needs to be conducted throughout the different stages of the project because this assessment can determine the success or failure of the project. In South Korea, the construction-standard-production-rate (CSPR) is used for determining the production-rate of individual construction equipment. However, CSPR cannot provide the production-rate of activities considering a combination of more than two different types of equipment (eg, excavator and dump truck used for excavation-load-haul activities). Having ready-made data on such production-rates of different equipment combinations would be beneficial for determining and optimal fleet management plan. Furthermore, such data can be beneficial for implementing optimized scheduling methods using supervised-learning methods. Accordingly, simple discrete event simulation approaches were carried out for data generation and regression analysis for testing the feasibility of the usage of such data. The time inputs used in this study were calculated based on the equations and information given in the CSPR.

In animal models of LGI1-dependent autosomal dominant lateral temporal lobe epilepsy, Kv1 channels are downregulated, suggesting their crucial involvement in epileptogenesis. The molecular basis of Kv1 channel-downregulation in LGI1 knock-out mice has not been elucidated and how the absence of this extracellular protein induces an important modification in the expression of Kv1 remains unknown. In this study we analyse by immunofluorescence the modifications in neuronal Kv1.1 and Kv1.2 distribution throughout the hippocampal formation of LGI1 knock-out mice. We show that Kv1 downregulation is not restricted to the axonal compartment, but also takes place in the somatodendritic region and is accompanied by a drastic decrease in Kv2 expression levels. Moreover, we find that the downregulation of these Kv channels is associated with a marked increase in bursting patterns. Finally, mass spectrometry uncovered key modifications in the Kv1 interactome that highlight the epileptogenic implication of Kv1 downregulation in LGI1 knock-out animals.

The Simplified Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (sWBGT) is widely used in heat stress assessments for climate-change studies, but its limitations have not been thoroughly explored. Building on recent critiques of sWBGT's use for current climate on global scale, this study examines sWBGT's biases using dynamically-downscaled sub-daily climate projections under multiple future emission scenarios. The analysis is aimed at understanding caveats in the application of sWBGT and the uncertainties in existing climate change analysis dependent on sWBGT. Results indicate sWBGT's biases are heavily influenced by local near-surface air temperature, with overestimation of heat stress in East Asia regions, particularly hot and humid areas, due to static assumptions of radiation and wind speed. This overestimation is amplified in warmer climates, leading to exaggerated projected heat stress increases in future. In contrast, underestimations are found for heat stress levels attributed to low wind speeds and strong radiations, such as over the Tibetan Plateau and certain extreme events. Additionally, sWBGT underestimates variability in extreme heatwave events compared to WBGT in both current and future climates, irrespective of overestimation in absolute heatwave intensities. This study emphasizes the limitations of sWBGT, especially in future warmer climates. Importance of sub-daily data for capturing daily maximum heat stress level and reflecting diurnal variations in different components is also discussed. In conclusion, we recommend using Liljegren's model (i.e., physics-based calculation) with high-resolution sub-daily climate data for more accurate outdoor heat stress assessments in climate change studies.

There is limited information available on the comparative evaluation of evolutionary characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 among different countries over time, and its relatedness to epidemiological and socio-environmental factors within those countries. We assessed comparative Bayesian evolutionary characteristics for SARS-CoV-2 in eight countries from 2020 to 2022 using BEAST version 2.6.7. Additionally, the relatedness between virus evolution factors and both epidemiological and socio-environmental factors was analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient. PURPOSE This study examined whether K-league fans’ responses to game outcomes align with reference-dependent preference and loss aversion principles. METHODS We collected user comments from the 2023 K-league game highlights videos on YouTube. We identified each user’s supporting team and excluded neutral fans’ comments. Sentiment analysis using KoBERT was applied, and estimated sentiment scores served as dependent variables. We performed panel regression to test whether unexpected wins and losses generate positive and negative comments. RESULTS First, an unexpected win generates more positive comments, and an unexpected loss generates more negative comments; a reference-dependent preference exists. Second, the difference between the coefficient on upset win and the absolute value of the coefficient on upset loss is not statistically different; loss aversion does not exist. CONCLUSIONS The findings derive a deeper understanding of sports viewership and explain the difference between domestic and overseas sports fans. Also, the findings provide insights into the domestic professional sports business.

In order to contribute to the discussion of pathological problems that occur in today’s “phase transition phenomenon of relationship,” this article focuses on “self-deception”—an example of a distorted relationship with oneself. It explores ways to overcome such issues through philosophical counseling. The specific measure is the Self-Dialogue seminar, a part of the Philosophical Counseling Clinical Education (PCCE) program. The second Section, therefore, begins with the question “How do we deal with the phenomenon of self-deception (on the part of the counselor or client) that we might actually encounter in philosophical counseling?” and discusses where and how philosophical counseling can intervene in the entire process of self-deception. In preparation for the possibility of encountering different levels of self-deception, the third section examines the contexts of three types of self-deceptions. The fourth section explores the possibility that a client or philosophical counselor can discover and change their own points of deception through the Records of Self-Dialogue seminar. Finally, the article argues that philosophical dialogue, if attained within a community predicated on individual equality and mutuality, can be a valid prescription for self-deception in the modern world.

Abstract Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) have emerged as a promising frontier in the field of electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR) because of their distinctive catalytic properties. Although numerous metal NCs are developed for CO2RR, their use in practical applications has suffered from their low‐yield synthesis and insufficient catalytic activity. In this study, the large‐scale synthesis and electrocatalytic performance of ClAg14(C≡CtBu)12+ NCs, which exhibit remarkable efficiency in catalyzing CO2‐to‐CO electroreduction with a CO selectivity of over 99% are reported. The underlying mechanisms behind this extraordinary CO2RR activity of ClAg14(C≡CtBu)12+ NCs are investigated by a combination of electrokinetic and theoretical studies. These analyses reveal that different active sites, generated through electrochemical activation, have unique adsorption properties for the reaction intermediates, leading to enhanced CO2RR and suppressed hydrogen production. Furthermore, industrially relevant CO2‐to‐CO electroreduction using ClAg14(C≡CtBu)12+ NCs in a zero‐gap CO2 electrolyzer, achieving high energy efficiency of 51% and catalyst activity of over 1400 A g−1 at a current density of 400 mA cm−2 is demonstrated.

Abstract Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with impaired social behavior and communication, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests. In addition to genetic factors, environmental factors such as prenatal drug exposure contribute to the development of ASD. However, how those prenatal factors induce behavioral deficits in the adult stage is not clear. To elucidate ASD pathogenesis at the molecular level, we performed a high-resolution mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomic analysis on the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of mice exposed to valproic acid (VPA) in utero, a widely used animal model of ASD. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in VPA-exposed mice showed significant overlap with ASD risk genes, including differentially expressed genes from the postmortem cortex of ASD patients. Functional annotations of the DEPs revealed significant enrichment in the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, which is dysregulated by the upregulation of Rnf146 in VPA-exposed mice. Consistently, overexpressing Rnf146 in the PFC impaired social behaviors and altered the Wnt signaling pathway in adult mice. Furthermore, Rnf146-overexpressing PFC neurons showed increased excitatory synaptic transmission, which may underlie impaired social behavior. These results demonstrate that Rnf146 is critical for social behavior and that dysregulation of Rnf146 underlies social deficits in VPA-exposed mice.

Abstract Characterizing the host response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) at the molecular level is necessary to understand viral pathogenesis and identify clinically relevant biomarkers. However, in humans, the pulmonary host response during disease onset remains poorly understood. Herein, we utilized a spatial transcriptome atlas to identify pulmonary microstructure-specific COVID-19 gene signatures during the acute phase of lung infection in cynomolgus macaques. The innate immune response to virus-induced cell death was primarily active in the alveolar regions involving activated macrophage infiltration. Inflamed vascular regions exhibited prominent upregulation of interferon and complement pathway genes that mediate antiviral activity and tissue damage response. Furthermore, known biomarker genes were significantly expressed in specific microstructures, and some of them were universally expressed across all microstructures. These findings underscore the importance of identifying key drivers of disease progression and clinically applicable biomarkers by focusing on pulmonary microstructures appearing during SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract The urogenital microbiota is the potential principal factor in the pathophysiology of urinary tract infection and the protection of urinary tract health. Little is known about the urogenital archaeome although several reports have indicated that the archaeomes of various regions of the human body are associated with health. Accordingly, we aimed to determine the presence and diversity of archaeomes in the human urogenital tract. To explore the urogenital archaeome, voided urine specimens from 373 asymptomatic Korean individuals were used. No difference was observed in body mass index, age, or gender, according to presence of archaea. Analysis of archaeal 16S rRNA gene amplicons of archaea positive samples consisted of simple community structures, including diverse archaea, such as the phyla Methanobacteriota, Thermoproteota, and Halobacteriota. Asymptomatic individuals showed high participant-dependent intervariability in their urogenital archaeomes. The mean relative archaeal abundance was estimated to be 0.89%, and fluorescence in situ hybridisation micrographs provided evidence of archaeal cells in the human urogenital tract. In addition, the urogenital archaeome shared partial taxonomic compositional characteristics with those of the other body sites. In this study, Methanobacteriota, Thermoproteota, and Halobacteriota were suggested as inhabitants of the human urogenital tract, and a distinct human urogenital archaeome was characterised. These findings expand our knowledge of archaea-host associations in the human urogenital tract and may lead to novel insights into the role of archaea in urinary tract health.

Background and Objectives: Despite high incidences of cognitive impairment with aging, evidence on the prevalence and the seriousness of drug-induced cognitive impairment is limited. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and the severity of drug-induced cognitive impairment and to investigate the clinical predictors of increased hospitalization risk from serious drug-induced cognitive impairment. Materials and Methods: Adverse drug events (ADEs) regarding drug-induced cognitive impairment reported to the Korean Adverse Event Reporting System Database (KAERS DB) from January 2012 to December 2021 were included (KIDS KAERS DB 2212A0073). The association between the etiologic classes and the reporting serious adverse events (SAEs) was evaluated using disproportionality analysis, and the effect was estimated with reporting odds ratio (ROR). Clinical predictors associated with increased risk of hospitalization from SAEs were identified via multivariate logistic analysis, and the effect was estimated with odds ratio (OR). Results: The most etiologic medication class for drug-induced cognitive impairment ADEs was analgesics, followed by sedative-hypnotics. Anticancer (ROR 57.105, 95% CI 15.174–214.909) and anti-Parkinson agents (ROR 4.057, 95% CI 1.121–14.688) were more likely to report serious drug-induced cognitive impairments. Male sex (OR 19.540, 95% CI 2.440–156.647) and cancer diagnosis (OR 18.115, 95% CI 3.246–101.101) are the major clinical predictors for increased risk of hospitalizations due to serious drug-induced cognitive impairment. Conclusions: This study highlights the significant prevalence and severity of drug-induced cognitive impairment with cancer diagnosis and anticancer agents. However, further large-scaled studies are required because of the potential underreporting of drug-induced cognitive impairments in real practice settings, which is further contributed to by the complexity of multiple contributing factors such as comorbidities.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have recently emerged as novel cardioprotective agents. However, their direct impact on cardiomyocyte injury is yet to be studied. In this work, we investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of empagliflozin (EMPA), an SGLT2 inhibitor, in mitigating palmitate (PA)-induced cardiomyocyte injury in H9c2 cells. We found that EMPA significantly attenuated PA-induced impairments in insulin sensitivity, ER stress, inflammatory cytokine gene expression, and cellular apoptosis. Additionally, EMPA elevated AMP levels, activated the AMPK pathway, and increased carnitine palmitoyl transferase1 (CPT1) gene expression, which collectively enhanced fatty acid oxidation and reduced stress signals. This study reveals a novel mechanism of EMPA’s protective effects against PA-induced cardiomyocyte injury, providing new therapeutic insights into EMPA as a cardioprotective agent.

This study examines future changes in extreme heat stress over East Asia and its sub-regions using wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) based on the CORDEX East Asia Phase II multiple Regional Climate Model (RCM) simulations performed under Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) scenarios. Daily maximum WBGTs (WX) are obtained from 3-hourly bias-corrected WBGTs and their future changes in the late 21st century (2081–2100) are analyzed with respect to the current period (1979–2014). Summer mean WX is projected to increase by 3.2 °C (SSP1-2.6: low emission) to 7.6 °C (SSP5-8.5: high emission) over East Asia, dominated by temperature increases. Relative humidity decreases over many regions, slightly offsetting WX increases (up to −6%), while it increases in northeastern and northern China, intensifying WX increases (up to +14%). This humidity-induced WX increase becomes stronger during hottest WX days (summer top 5%) and also under low emission scenarios (up to +33%). For sub-regional projections, extreme heat stress day (EHD) is defined when WX exceeds its 95th percentile in at least 10% of the area. RCMs project on average a 10 times increase of EHD frequency under the SSP5-8.5 scenario. The EHD magnitude, which combines the intensity and area extent of EHD events, is also expected to increase dramatically throughout East Asia, reaching a range of 3.2–3.5 °C∙fraction compared to the current (0.1–0.2 °C∙fraction). Further, EHDs are projected to start earlier and end later, lasting much longer (85–140 days) than the current condition (5–6 days) in the SSP5-8.5 scenario. RCMs exhibit a good agreement in WX and EHD projections with some noticeable differences in in-land sub-regions. Our results indicate that severe heat stress will affect the whole East Asia throughout and beyond the summer season and, in particular, southern sub-regions will be affected by more-intense and longer-lasting extreme heat stress events.

Platelets are known to improve the wound-repair capacity of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) by transferring mitochondria intercellularly. This study aimed to investigate whether direct transfer of mitochondria (pl-MT) isolated from platelets could enhance wound healing in vitro using a cell-based model. Wound repairs were assessed by 2D gap closure experiment in wound scratch assay using human dermal fibroblasts (hDFs). Results demonstrated that pl-MT were successfully internalized into hDFs. It increased cell proliferation and promoted the closure of wound gap. Importantly, pl-MT suppressed both intracellular and mitochondrial ROS production induced by hydrogen peroxide, cisplatin, and TGF-β in hDFs. Taken together, these results suggest that pl-MT transfer might be used as a potential therapeutic strategy for wound repair.

This study examines the relationship between climate risk and stock crash risk and the moderating effect of greenhouse gas emission trading scheme (ETS). Numerous studies have tested stock price crash risk measured by the negative skewness of return distributions in the areas of internal governance mechanism. While interest in environmental performance for sustainable growth of firms has increased, there are no studies on the effect of climate risk on stock crash risk. Thus, we find that climate risk (a firm’s greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption) increases stock crash risk, and the positive effect of climate risk on stock crash risk is weakened after introduction of the emission trading scheme. This study theoretically extends the literature on the empirical determinants of stock crash risk, and practically provides investors with proven information about whether climate risk is worth considering during investment decisions. Furthermore, at the level of government policy, we can suggest that a monitoring system is needed to mitigate potential information asymmetry problems in firm with high climate risk.

Abstract Background To understand the molecular mechanisms involved in regulation of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) by metformin in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. Methods Expression levels of DNMTs in response to metformin were analyzed in NSCLC cells. MicroRNAs regulating expression of DNMTs at the post-transcriptional level were searched using miRNA-target databases (miRDB and miRTarBase), TCGA RNASeqV2 lung cancer data, and miRNA-seq. Results Metformin dose-dependently downregulated expression of DNMT1 and DNMT3a at the post-transcriptional level and expression of DNMT3b at the transcriptional level in A549 lung cancer cells. Activity of DNMTs was reduced by about 2.6-fold in A549 cells treated with 10 mM metformin for 72 h. miR-148/-152 family members (miR-148a, miR-148b, and miR-152) targeting the 3′UTR of DNMTs were associated with post-transcriptional regulation of DNMTs by metformin. Metformin upregulated expression of miR-148a, miR-148b, and miR-152 in A549 and H1650 cells. Transfection with an miR-148b plasmid or a mimic suppressed expression of DNMT1 and DNMT3b in A549 cells. Transfection with the miR-148a mimic in A549 and H1650 cells decreased the luciferase activity of DNMT1 3′UTR. A combination of metformin and cisplatin synergistically increased expression levels of miR-148/-152 family members but decreased expression of DNMTs in A549 cells. Low expression of miR-148b was associated with poor overall survival (HR = 2.56, 95% CI 1.09—6.47; P = 0.04) but not with recurrence-free survival. Conclusions The present study suggests that metformin inhibits expression of DNMTs by upregulating miR-148/-152 family members in NSCLC cells.

Predicting the future trajectories of surrounding pedestrians is undoubtedly one of the most essential but challenging tasks for safe urban autonomous driving. Despite this importance, there has been limited research conducted on the egocentric view from easy-to-access vehicle-mounted cameras for autonomous driving applications. This paper presents a non-autoregressive transformer based trajectory prediction methodology for pedestrian on egocentric view. Furthermore, our proposed model predicts ego-motion independent future trajectories for utilization in downstream tasks such as motion planning in autonomous vehicles. This approach differs from previous researches as it focuses on predicting the future position of pedestrians based on the current observed image context, rather than their future positions in future observed images. The proposed model, referred to as the TransPred network in this paper, is composed of three main modules: vehicle motion compensation, non-autoregressive transformer, and conditional variational autoencoder(CVAE). The transformer structure is employed to effectively handle raw images and the historical trajectory of the target pedestrian, enabling the generation of advanced future predictions. Additionally, the CVAE module is utilized in the final part of the overall model to predict plausible multiple future trajectories. It contributes to generating diverse and realistic future trajectory predictions. The performance of our model has been evaluated on Nuscenes and In-house dataset obtained from our vehicle equipped with sensors. We achieves the state-of-the-art performance for prioritized trajectories on both datasets. Moreover, the usability of the proposed ego-motion independent trajectories for autonomous driving is demonstrated through risk assessment experiments.

Aquatic environments account for half of global CH4 emissions, with freshwater wetlands being the most significant contributors. These CH4 fluxes can be partially offset by aerobic CH4 oxidation driven by methanotrophs. Additionally, some methanotrophs can convert CH4 into polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), an energy storage molecule as well as a promising bioplastic polymer. In this study, we investigate how PHA-accumulating methanotrophic communities enriched from wetlands were shaped by varying resource availability (i.e., C and N concentrations) at a fixed C/N ratio. Cell yields, PHA accumulation, and community composition were evaluated in high (20% CH4 and 10 mM NH4+) and low resource (0.2% CH4 and 0.1 mM NH4+) conditions simulating engineered and environmental settings, respectively. High resource availability decreased C-based cell yields, while N-based cell yields remained stable, suggesting nutrient exchange patterns differed between methanotrophic communities at different resource concentrations. PHA accumulation was only observed in high resource enrichments, producing approximately 12.6% ± 2.4% (m/m) PHA, while PHA in low resource enrichments remained below detection. High resource enrichments were dominated by Methylocystis methanotrophs, while low resource enrichments remained significantly more diverse and contained only a minor population of methanotrophs. This study demonstrates that resource concentration shapes PHA-accumulating methanotrophic communities. Together, this provides useful information to leverage such communities in engineering settings as well as to begin understanding their role in the environment.

Abstract Recent evidence indicates that ultraviolet (UV) exposure of the skin can affect brain functions such as learning and memory, addictive behavior, and hippocampal neurogenesis. These changes are closely associated with hippocampal function, which plays a pivotal role in learning and memory formation. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these UV-induced skin-brain interactions remain unclear. To elucidate the molecular signature associated with UV-induced neurobehavioral changes, we analyzed the hippocampal transcriptome in a well-established mouse skin aging model, which showed thickened skin and impaired hippocampal memory. Transcriptome analysis revealed that significantly downregulated genes in UV-irradiated mice are enriched in neuroimmune-related signaling pathways. Furthermore, cell-type analysis showed that DEGs are also enriched in microglia. Consistently, immunofluorescence imaging showed an increased number of Iba1-positive microglia in the hippocampi of UV-irradiated mice. Collectively, our findings highlight that chronic UV irradiation of the skin causes significant changes in the neuroimmune system in the hippocampus, accompanied by microglial dysfunction and cognitive impairment.

Abstract Challenges in the understanding of three-dimensional (3D) brain networks by simultaneously recording both surface and intracortical areas of brain signals remain due to the difficulties of constructing mechanical design and spatial limitations of the implanted sites. Here, we present a foldable and flexible 3D neural prosthetic that facilitates the 3D mapping of complex neural circuits with high spatiotemporal dynamics from the intracortical to cortical region. This device is the tool to map the 3D neural transmission through sophisticatedly designed four flexible penetrating shanks and surface electrode arrays in one integrated system. We demonstrate the potential possibilities of identifying correlations of neural activities from the intracortical area to cortical regions through continuous monitoring of electrophysiological signals. We also exploited the structural properties of the device to record synchronized signals of single spikes evoked by unidirectional total whisker stimulation. This platform offers opportunities to clarify unpredictable 3D neural pathways and provides a next-generation neural interface.

In this study, a microbial risk assessment was performed for the bacteria Vibrio parahaemolyticus, which causes a foodborne illness following the consumption of Jeotgal, a fermented seafood in South Korea. The assessment comprised of six stages: product, market, home, consumption, dose-response, and risk. The initial contamination level (IC) was calculated based on the prevalence of V. parahaemolyticus in 90 Jeotgal samples. The kinetic behavior of V. parahaemolyticus was described using predictive models. The data on transportation conditions from manufacturer to market and home were collected through personal communication and from previous studies. Data for the Jeotgal consumption status were obtained, and an appropriate probability distribution was established. The simulation models responding to the scenario were analyzed using the @RISK program. The IC of V. parahaemolyticus was estimated using beta distribution [Beta (1, 91)]. The cell counts during transportation were estimated using Weibull and polynomial models [δ = 1 / (0.0718 – 0.0097 × T + 0.0005 × T2)], while the probability distributions for time and temperature were estimated using Pert, Weibull, Uniform, and LogLogistic distributions. Daily average consumption amounts were assessed using the Pareto distribution [0.60284,1.32,Risk Truncate(0,155)]. The results indicated that the risk of V. parahaemolyticus infection through Jeotgal consumption is low in South Korea.

Abstract Rabbits are being increasingly used as companion animals, and in research; thus, the need for proper veterinary care for rabbits has increased. Surgical access is more challenging in rabbits under inhalation anesthesia compared to other animals, such as dogs and cats. Rabbits have a very narrow and deep oral cavity, large incisors, and a large tongue. Moreover, their temporomandibular joint has limited mobility, making it more difficult to approach the larynx. Various methods have been proposed to overcome this difficulty. The video laryngoscope was introduced in 1999 and is useful when airway intubation is unsuccessful using a conventional laryngoscope. We postulated that a video laryngoscope with a modified size 1 Macintosh blade (McGrath MAC Video Laryngoscope, Medtronic, USA) would facilitate the intubation of New Zealand White rabbits. Sixteen specific-pathogen-free male New Zealand White rabbits weighing 3.45–4.70 kg were studied. All rabbits were intubated using the video laryngoscope. Typically, a 3.0 mm endotracheal tube was used for rabbits weighing 4 kg. During surgery, anesthesia was well maintained, and there were no major abnormalities in the animals’ conditions. No rabbit developed breathing difficulties or anorexia after recovering from anesthesia. We established an intubation method using a video laryngoscope with a modified blade and stylet in the supine (ventrodorsal) position and successfully applied it in 16 rabbits. It is useful for training novices and for treating rabbits in veterinary hospitals with few staff members and animal research facilities where there are insufficient human resources.

This retrospective cross-sectional study aims to investigate the prevalence and seriousness of drug-induced nephrotoxicity and to identify clinical predictors intensifying the seriousness of nephrotoxicity. Adverse drug events (ADEs) reported to the Korean Adverse Event Reporting System Database (KAERS DB) from January 2012 to December 2021 were investigated. The association between the seriousness and the etiologic drug was estimated in reporting odds ratio (ROR) based on disproportionality analysis. Logistic regression was utilized to recognize predictors associated with serious nephrotoxicity. The majority of ADEs were reported in ages 30 to 59, and immunosuppressants were the most etiologic medications. ADEs involving antibiotics, including vancomycin (ROR 0.268; 95% CI 0.129–0.557), were less likely to be serious. More than 93% of cyclosporine-related ADEs were serious nephrotoxicity, whereas tacrolimus was less likely to report serious nephrotoxicity (ROR 0.356; 95% CI 0.187–0.680). The risk of serious nephrotoxicity was decreased with aging (ROR 0.955; 95% CI 0.940–0.972) while increased in women (OR 2.700; 95% CI 1.450–5.008). Polypharmacy was associated with increased risk of interstitial nephritis (OR 1.019; 95% CI 1.001–1.038). However, further studies investigating the impact of clinical practice on ADE incidences as well as clinical prognosis related to nephrotoxicity are obligated.

This study aims to investigate the prevalence and seriousness of drug-induced arrhythmia and to identify predictors associated with the seriousness of arrhythmia. Drug-induced arrhythmia cases reported to the Korean Adverse Event Reporting System Database (KAERS DB) from January 2012 to December 2021 were investigated. A disproportionality test was performed to detect the association of the etiologic medication classes and types, along with patient demographic information, with the seriousness of drug-induced arrhythmia. Logistic regression was performed to investigate the predictors that increase the risk of serious arrhythmia. The most common etiologic agent for drug-induced arrhythmia was sevoflurane, whereas serious arrhythmia was most prevalent with narcotics. Antibiotics (reporting odds ratio (ROR) 4.125; 95% CI 1.438–11.835), chemotherapy (ROR 6.994; 95% CI 2.239–21.542), and iodinated contrast media (ROR 8.273; 95% CI 3.062–22.352) had a strong association with the seriousness of drug-induced arrhythmia. Among numerous etiologic agents, ioversol (ROR 16.490; 95% CI 3.589–75.772) and lidocaine (ROR 12.347; 95% CI 2.996–50.884) were more likely to be reported with serious arrhythmia. Aging and comorbidity, primarily cancer, are the most contributing predictors associated with serious arrhythmia. Further studies on the clinical significance of patient-specific predictors for the increased risk of serious drug-induced arrhythmia are warranted to promote drug safety.

Abstract Despite numerous previous studies, the full action mechanism of the pathogenesis of asthma remains undiscovered, and the need for further investigation is increasing in order to identify more effective target molecules. Recent attempts to develop more efficacious treatments for asthma have incorporated mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based cell therapies. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-asthmatic effects of MSCs primed with Liproxstatin-1, a potent ferroptosis inhibitor. In addition, we sought to examine the changes within macrophage populations and their characteristics in asthmatic conditions. Seven-week-old transgenic mice, constitutively overexpressing lung-specific interleukin (IL)-13, were used to simulate chronic asthma. Human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (hUC-MSCs) primed with Liproxstatin-1 were intratracheally administered four days prior to sampling. IL-13 transgenic mice demonstrated phenotypes of chronic asthma, including severe inflammation, goblet cell hyperplasia, and subepithelial fibrosis. Ly6C+M2 macrophages, found within the pro-inflammatory CD11c+CD11b+ macrophages, were upregulated and showed a strong correlation with lung eosinophil counts. Liproxstatin-1-primed hUC-MSCs showed enhanced ability to downregulate the activation of T helper type 2 cells compared to naïve MSCs in vitro and reduced airway inflammation, particularly Ly6C+M2 macrophages population, and fibrosis in vivo. In conclusion, intratracheal administration is an effective method of MSC delivery, and macrophages hold great potential as an additional therapeutic target for asthma.

The loading levels of electrodes are one of the crucial parameters of high energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs); however, their effects on specific energy and energy density remain insufficiently studied. Moreover, the rate capability can differ greatly with varying loading levels and hence requires further investigation. Herein, we investigated the relationship between electrode loading levels and electrochemical performance of LIBs via galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). We found that the differences in performance stem from differing internal resistances at varying loading levels. On one hand, internal resistance decreased with a higher number of parallel connection; on the other hand, it increased with extension of electrical pathways. As a result, the optimal loading level of commercial LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode materials was approximately 20 mg/cm2, which corresponds to an areal capacity of 3.3 mAh/cm2. These findings will assist in the further optimization of commercially available LIBs.

Abstract Background Quercus acuta Thunb. (Fagaceae) or Japanese evergreen oak is cultivated as an ornamental plant in South Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan and used in traditional medicine. The acorn or fruit of Quercus acuta Thunb. (QAF) is the main ingredient of acorn jelly, a traditional food in Korea. Its leaf was recently shown to have potent xanthine oxidase inhibitory and anti-hyperuricemic activities; however, there have been no studies on the biological activity of QAF extracts. Solar ultraviolet light triggers photoaging of the skin, which increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs), and destroys collagen fibers, consequently inducing wrinkle formation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of water extracts of QAF against UVB-induced skin photoaging and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms in human keratinocytes (HaCaT). Methods In this study, we used HPLC to identify the major active components of QAF water extracts. Anti-photoaging effects of QAF extracts were evaluated by analyzing ROS procollagen type I in UVB-irradiated HaCaT keratinocytes. Antiradical activity was determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,20-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) assays. The expression of MMP-1 was tested by western blotting and ELISA kits. QAF effects on phosphorylation of the MAPK (p38, JNK, and ERK) pathway and transcription factor AP-1, which enhances the expression of MMPs, were analyzed by western blots. Results We identified two major active components in QAF water extracts, gallotannic acid and ellagic acid. The QAF aqueous extracts recovered UVB-induced cell toxicity and reduced oxidative stress by inhibiting intracellular ROS generation in HaCaT cells. QAF rescued UVB-induced collagen degradation by suppressing MMP-1 expression. The anti-photoaging activities of QAF were associated with the inhibition of UVB-induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and activator protein 1 (AP-1). Our findings indicated that QAF prevents UVB-induced skin damage due to collagen degradation and MMP-1 activation via inactivation of the ERK/AP-1 signaling pathway. Overall, this study strongly suggests that QAF exerts anti-skin-aging effects and is a potential natural biomaterial that inhibits UVB-induced photoaging. Conclusion These results show that QAF water extract effectively prevents skin photoaging by enhancing collagen deposition and inhibiting MMP-1 via the ERK/AP-1 signaling pathway.

Understanding the ultrafast dynamics of molecules is of fundamental importance. Time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy (TR-XAS) is a powerful spectroscopic technique for unveiling the time-dependent structural and electronic information of molecules that has been widely applied in various fields. Herein, the design and technical achievement of a newly developed experimental apparatus for TR-XAS measurements in the tender X-ray range with X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory XFEL (PAL-XFEL) are described. Femtosecond TR-XAS measurements were conducted at the Ru L3-edge of well known photosensitizer tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) chloride ([Ru(bpy)3]2+) in water. The results indicate ultrafast photoinduced electron transfer from the Ru center to the ligand, which demonstrates that the newly designed setup is applicable for monitoring ultrafast reactions in the femtosecond domain.

Abstract Conformal geometry is studied using the unfolded formulation à la Vasiliev. Analyzing the first-order consistency of the unfolded equations, we identify the content of zero-forms as the spin-two off-shell Fradkin-Tseytlin module of so 2 d $$ \mathfrak{so}\left(2,d\right) $$ . We sketch the nonlinear structure of the equations and explain how Weyl invariant densities, which Type-B Weyl anomaly consist of, could be systematically computed within the unfolded formulation. The unfolded equation for conformal geometry is also shown to be reduced to various on-shell gravitational systems by requiring additional algebraic constraints.

Adolescents commonly exhibit high stress and emotional reactivity, and are prone to addictive behaviors including online gaming. Despite the negative impact, online gaming has recently been reported to improve cognitive function. This study examines differences in event-related potentials (ERP) during task switching according to the level of gaming addiction. High-risk, potential-risk, and general groups were recruited according to their Internet Addiction Scale results and total forty-five middle school boys aged 13–15 years participated in the study. The participants were asked to perform switching tasks consisting of size, value, and shape stimuli. The ERP analysis revealed greater N200 amplitudes in the high-risk and potential-risk groups compared with the general user group, suggesting that the participants with a greater involvement in Internet gaming have higher cognitive flexibility in resolving response-related cognitive interference during task-switching. In the analyses of P300, the potential-risk group exhibited higher amplitudes compared with the high-risk and general user groups at F3 region, and during the shape task, separately, which reflects enhanced cognitive flexibility of the potential-risk group to process the stimulus-related interference. The findings of this study suggest that moderate use of online games can enhance response inhibition and stimulus processing. The practical use of online games as an auxiliary means to support cognitive flexibility of adolescents struggling with stress and emotion processing should be explored in future research.

Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of fermented Maillard reaction products made by milk proteins (FMRPs) on Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens), and to elucidate antimicrobial modes of FMRPs on the bacteria, using physiological and morphological analyses. Methods Antimicrobial effects of FMRPs (whey protein plus galactose fermented by Lactobacillus rhamnosus [L. rhamnosus] 4B15 [Gal-4B15] or Lactobacillus gasseri 4M13 [Gal-4M13], and whey protein plus glucose fermented by L. rhamnosus 4B15 [Glc-4B15] or L. gasseri 4M13 [Glc-4M13]) on C. perfringens were tested by examining growth responses of the pathogen. Abstract Histone modifications are a key mechanism underlying the epigenetic regulation of gene expression, which is critically involved in the consolidation of multiple forms of memory. However, the roles of histone modifications in cerebellum-dependent motor learning and memory are not well understood. To test whether changes in histone methylation are involved in cerebellar learning, we used heterozygous Kdm3b knockout (Kdm3b +/−) mice, which show reduced lysine 9 on histone 3 (H3K9) demethylase activity. H3K9 di-methylation is significantly increased selectively in the granule cell layer of the cerebellum of Kdm3b +/− mice. In the cerebellum-dependent optokinetic response (OKR) learning, Kdm3b +/− mice show deficits in memory consolidation, whereas they are normal in basal oculomotor performance and OKR acquisition. In addition, RNA-seq analyses revealed that the expression levels of several plasticity-related genes were altered in the mutant cerebellum. Our study suggests that active regulation of histone methylation is critical for the consolidation of cerebellar motor memory.

This study examined the characteristics of the extreme high temperature events in South Korea in relation to the spatial extent, intensity, and persistence of the heat wave (HW), and analyzed the effect of the HW events on the future changes in electricity demands. The HW magnitude is newly calculated by combining the spatial extent of HW with its station average intensity, to evaluate the effect of extreme high temperatures more accurately. The observed frequency and magnitude of heat wave days (HWDs) have significantly increased during 1973–2019. Climate model simulations under the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 8.5 scenario project the increased occurrences of unprecedented wide and strong HW events in the late 21st century (2071–2100). Observations show that the electricity demands increase as the spatial extent of HW widens, the intensity gets stronger, and the duration gets longer. Based on the observed relationship, we proposed a multiple linear regression model to predict the electricity demand with improved accuracy by including the magnitude and duration of HWs as additional explanatory factors. According to the proposed model, as the magnitude and the duration of HWs increase in the future, electricity demands required for cooling are predicted to increase significantly. In the late 21st century, the daily peak electricity demands on HWDs are projected to increase by 9.1% relative to the present level. In particular, its extreme values (30-year return level) are expected to increase more strongly by 19.1%, which is found to be alleviated substantially (4.6%) when greenhouse gas emission is reduced following the RCP 2.6 scenario. Further, strong electricity demands are expected to expand into early and late summer, irrespective of scenarios, in line with the summer season expansion. These climate-induced increases in energy demands will significantly amplify those due to the socioeconomic growth.

IntroductionBoth aging and multiple sclerosis (MS) cause central nervous system (CNS) atrophy. Excess brain atrophy in MS has been interpreted as “accelerated aging.” Current paper tests an alternative hypothesis: MS causes CNS atrophy by mechanism(s) different from physiological aging. Thus, subtracting effects of physiological confounders on CNS structures would isolate MS-specific effects.MethodsStandardized brain MRI and neurological examination were acquired prospectively in 646 participants enrolled in ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00794352 protocol. CNS volumes were measured retrospectively, by automated Lesion-TOADS algorithm and by Spinal Cord Toolbox, in a blinded fashion. Physiological confounders identified in 80 healthy volunteers were regressed out by stepwise multiple linear regression. MS specificity of confounder-adjusted MRI features was assessed in non-MS cohort (n = 158). MS patients were randomly split into training (n = 277) and validation (n = 131) cohorts. Gradient boosting machine (GBM) models were generated in MS training cohort from unadjusted and confounder-adjusted CNS volumes against four disability scales.ResultsConfounder adjustment highlighted MS-specific progressive loss of CNS white matter. GBM model performance decreased substantially from training to cross-validation, to independent validation cohorts, but all models predicted cognitive and physical disability with low p-values and effect sizes that outperform published literature based on recent meta-analysis. Models built from confounder-adjusted MRI predictors outperformed models from unadjusted predictors in the validation cohort.ConclusionGBM models from confounder-adjusted volumetric MRI features reflect MS-specific CNS injury, and due to stronger correlation with clinical outcomes compared to brain atrophy these models should be explored in future MS clinical trials.

Green hydrogen is being considered as a next-generation sustainable energy source. It is created electrochemically by water splitting with renewable electricity such as wind, geothermal, solar, and hydropower. The development of electrocatalysts is crucial for the practical production of green hydrogen in order to achieve highly efficient water-splitting systems. Due to its advantages of being environmentally friendly, economically advantageous, and scalable for practical application, electrodeposition is widely used to prepare electrocatalysts. There are still some restrictions on the ability to create highly effective electrocatalysts using electrodeposition owing to the extremely complicated variables required to deposit uniform and large numbers of catalytic active sites. In this review article, we focus on recent advancements in the field of electrodeposition for water splitting, as well as a number of strategies to address current issues. The highly catalytic electrodeposited catalyst systems, including nanostructured layered double hydroxides (LDHs), single-atom catalysts (SACs), high-entropy alloys (HEAs), and core-shell structures, are intensively discussed. Lastly, we offer solutions to current problems and the potential of electrodeposition in upcoming water-splitting electrocatalysts.

Developing cost-effective, highly catalytic active, and stable electrocatalysts in alkaline electrolytes is important for the development of highly efficient anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). To this end, metal oxides/hydroxides have attracted wide research interest for efficient electrocatalysts in water splitting owing to their abundance and tunable electronic properties. It is very challenging to achieve an efficient overall catalytic performance based on single metal oxide/hydroxide-based electrocatalysts due to low charge mobilities and limited stability. This review is mainly focused on the advanced strategies to synthesize the multicomponent metal oxide/hydroxide-based materials that include nanostructure engineering, heterointerface engineering, single-atom catalysts, and chemical modification. The state of the art of metal oxide/hydroxide-based heterostructures with various architectures is extensively discussed. Finally, this review provides the fundamental challenges and perspectives regarding the potential future direction of multicomponent metal oxide/hydroxide-based electrocatalysts.

Background Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) can be successfully performed using highly developed implantation techniques. However, anatomical barriers, such as epidural adhesion, may impede placing the electrode for SCS in an adequate position. Case A 60-year-old female who had SCS with an electrode at the T9-10 level removed because she had a wound infection at the back incision site. After the wound infection was completely resolved, we tried to re-insert the SCS electrode. However, it was difficult to advance it up to the T11 level due to epidural adhesion. We performed a combined epidural adhesiolysis using balloon decompression with an inflatable balloon catheter. After that, the SCS lead was successfully placed up to the T11 level, and implantation of SCS was performed. Conclusions When a patient has epidural adhesion, an epidural adhesiolysis with an inflatable balloon catheter may help the insertion of the SCS electrode in the epidural space.

Abstract The objective of this study was to conduct QMRA (quantitative microbial risk assessment) of Clostridium perfringens through soy sauce consumption. Four hundred and ninety soy sauce samples from markets were analyzed to detect C. perfringens. Temperature and time were also measured during transportation and display of soy sauce. A primary model was developed by fitting the Weibull model to the C. perfringens cell counts in soy sauce at 7–35°C, and δ (the time needed to decrease 1 log CFU/ml) and ρ (curve shape) were calculated. The parameters were analyzed, using the Exponential model (secondary model) as a function of temperature. The consumption amount and percentage of soy sauce were surveyed, and a dose‐response model was searched. Using all collected data, a simulation model was prepared in the @RISK program to estimate the probability of C. perfringens foodborne illness by soy sauce consumption. C. perfringens were negative in 490 samples. Thus, the initial contamination level was estimated to be −2.9 log CFU/ml. The developed predictive models showed that C. perfringens cell counts decreased during transportation and display. The average consumption amounts, and the percentage of soy sauce were 7.81 ml and 81.2%, respectively. The simulation showed that the probability of C. perfringens foodborne illness by consumption of soy sauce was 1.7 × 10–16 per person per day. Therefore, the risk of C. perfringens by consumption of soy sauce is low in Korea.

Abstract ODFM is a data management system that integrates comprehensive omics information for microorganisms associated with various fermented foods, additive ingredients, and seasonings (e.g. kimchi, Korean fermented vegetables, fermented seafood, solar salt, soybean paste, vinegar, beer, cheese, sake, and yogurt). The ODFM archives genome, metagenome, metataxonome, and (meta)transcriptome sequences of fermented food-associated bacteria, archaea, eukaryotic microorganisms, and viruses; 131 bacterial, 38 archaeal, and 28 eukaryotic genomes are now available to users. The ODFM provides both the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool search-based local alignment function as well as average nucleotide identity-based genetic relatedness measurement, enabling gene diversity and taxonomic analyses of an input query against the database. Genome sequences and annotation results of microorganisms are directly downloadable, and the microbial strains registered in the archive library will be available from our culture collection of fermented food-associated microorganisms. The ODFM is a comprehensive database that covers the genomes of an entire microbiome within a specific food ecosystem, providing basic information to evaluate microbial isolates as candidate fermentation starters for fermented food production.

This study examines the up-to-date observed trends of subseasonal to annual range climate extremes over the East Asia region using the high-resolution global unified gauge-based analysis of the NOAA Climate Prediction Center for 1981–2021. The spatial extent of extreme events is identified using the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI)-based modified climate extreme index (EmCEI) with five subcomponents (maximum temperature, minimum temperature. total rainfall, heavy rainfall, and wet and dry days). By combining the spatiotemporal fields into a simple index, trends in climate extremes are systematically obtained in various time ranges. Annual and semi-annual long-term trends in East Asia showed a statistically significant increase in the percentage of area affected by the upper-extreme climate (warm days, warm nights, wet extreme) and concurrently by the decrease of lower-extreme climate (cool days, cool nights, dry extreme). As the time range becomes higher, the tendency is consistent but extremeness depends on seasons and calendar months. The total EmCEI shows an increasing trend greater in the warm (summer) season than in the cold (winter) season. The temperature extreme components (C1 and C2) are dominated in spring and summer. In the subseasonal months, March has the highest trend among the calendar months both in C1 and C2. The increasing trend is consistently distinct in the 2010s for all time ranges and all components. The long-term trend in winter exhibits distinctive features of the smallest increase than in other seasons and months caused by robust interannual to multidecadal variability in the 1990s–2000s. The area affected by heavy rainfall is mainly dominated in summer while the total rainfall and wet day extreme extend in summer and fall, respectively. The EmCEI suggests that the change in the spatial extent of climate extremes is mainly caused by a shift in temperature and rainfall distributions toward warm and wet extremes over East Asia.

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes memory loss. Most AD researches have focused on neurodegeneration mechanisms. Considering that neurodegenerative changes are not reversible, understanding early functional changes before neurodegeneration is critical to develop new strategies for early detection and treatment of AD. We found that Tg2576 mice exhibited impaired pattern separation at the early preclinical stage. Based on previous studies suggesting a critical role of dentate gyrus (DG) in pattern separation, we investigated functional changes in DG of Tg2576 mice. We found that granule cells in DG (DG-GCs) in Tg2576 mice showed increased action potential firing in response to long depolarizations and reduced 4-AP sensitive K+-currents compared to DG-GCs in wild-type (WT) mice. Among Kv4 family channels, Kv4.1 mRNA expression in DG was significantly lower in Tg2576 mice. We confirmed that Kv4.1 protein expression was reduced in Tg2576, and this reduction was restored by antioxidant treatment. Hyperexcitable DG and impaired pattern separation in Tg2576 mice were also recovered by antioxidant treatment. These results highlight the hyperexcitability of DG-GCs as a pathophysiologic mechanism underlying early cognitive deficits in AD and Kv4.1 as a new target for AD pathogenesis in relation to increased oxidative stress.

The annual consumption of fishery products, particularly sea squirt (Halocynthia roretzi), per person has steadily increased in South Korea. However, the quantitative risk of Vibrio parahaemolyticus following intake of sea squirt has not been analyzed. This study focuses on quantitative predictions of the probability of consuming sea squirt and getting of V. parahaemolyticus foodborne illness. The prevalence of V. parahaemolyticus in sea squirt was evaluated, and the time spent by sea squirt in transportation vehicles, market displays, and home refrigerators, in addition to the temperature of each of these, were recorded. The data were fitted to the @RISK program to obtain a probability distribution. Predictive models were developed to determine the fate of V. parahaemolyticus under distribution conditions. A simulation model was prepared based on experimental data, and a dose-response model for V. parahaemolyticus was prepared using data from literature to estimate infection risk. V. parahaemolyticus contamination was detected in 6 of 35 (17.1%) sea squirt samples. The daily consumption quantity of sea squirt was 62.14 g per person, and the consumption frequency was 0.28%. The average probability of V. parahaemolyticus foodborne illness following sea squirt consumption per person per day was 4.03 × 10−9. The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of foodborne illness caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus following sea squirt consumption in South Korea.
