A boron trihalide mediated alkyne-aldehyde coupling reaction leading to stereodefined 1,3,5-triaryl-1,5-dihalo-1,4-pentadienes is described. The study led to the discovery of a direct substitution of hydroxyl groups by stereodefined alkenyl moieties using alkenylboron dihalides. During the investigation, it was also discovered that, at low temperatures, the reaction of BCl3 with alkynes produces monovinylboron dichloride rather than the reported divinylboron chloride. A modified reaction mechanism for the boron trichloride mediated alkyne-aldehyde coupling reaction is now proposed. The reaction temperature and mode of addition have been found to have dramatic affects on the stereochemistry of the diene products.

The authors have successfully developed novel efficient and cost-effective sorbent and oxidant for removing mercury from power plant flue gases. These sorbent and oxidant offer great promise for controlling mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants burning a wide range of coals including bituminous, sub-bituminous, and lignite coals. A preliminary analysis from the bench-scale test results shows that this new sorbent will be thermally more stable and cost-effective in comparison with any promoted mercury sorbents currently available in the marketplace. In addition to the sorbent, an excellent elemental mercury (Hg(0)) oxidant has also been developed, and will enable coal-fired power plants equipped with wet scrubbers to simultaneously control their mercury emissions as well as their sulfur oxides emissions. This will work by converting all elemental mercury to an oxidized form which will be removed by the wet scrubber. This will result in significant cost savings for mercury emissions control to the atmosphere, and will help in keeping electric costs low. The sorbent and oxidant will benefit from the utilization of a waste stream from the printed circuit board (PCB) industry, and would thus be environmentally beneficial to both of the utility and electronics industries. The sorbent also demonstrated thermal stability up to 350°C, suggesting a possibility of an application in pulverized coal-fired power plants equipped with hot-side electrostatic precipitators and coal gasification plants.

Noncarbonaceous materials or mineral oxides (silica gel, alumina, molecular sieves, zeolites, and montmorillonite) were modified with various functional groups such as amine, amide, thiol, urea, and active additives such as elemental sulfur, sodium sulfide, and sodium polysulfide to examine their potential as sorbents for the removal of elemental mercury (Hg(0)) vapor at coal-fired utility power plants. A number of sorbent candidates such as amine- silica gel, urea- silica gel, thiol- silica gel, amide-silica gel, sulfur-alumina, sulfur-molecular sieve, sulfur-montmorillonite, sodium sulfide-montmorillonite, and sodium polysulfide-montmorillonite, were synthesized and tested in a lab-scale fixed-bed system under an argon flow for screening purposes at 70 degrees C and/or 140 degrees C. Several functionalized silica materials reported in previous studies to effectively control heavy metals in the aqueous phase showed insignificant adsorption capacities for Hg(0) control in the gas phase, suggesting that mercury removal mechanisms in both phases are different. Among elemental sulfur-, sodium sulfide-, and sodium polysulfide-impregnated inorganic samples, sodium polysulfide-impregnated montmorillonite K 10 showed a moderate adsorption capacity at 70 degrees C, which can be used for sorbent injection prior to the wet FGD system.

Direct Grignard type addition of terminal alkynes to in situ generated imines, from aldehydes and amines, occurs under microwave irradiation using CuBr alone in a one-pot operation. This solventless approach provides ready access to propargylamines and is applicable both to aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes.

Several new organic transformations have been achieved utilizing boron halide reagents. Aryl aldehydes are conveniently converted to gem-dichloromethylbenzenes using boron trichloride. Aryl aldehydes are alkylated by alkylboron chlorides in a Grignard-like fashion to generate the corresponding arylalkanols or alkylboron chlorides. Aryl aldehydes react with divinylboron halides (generated via the haloboration of alkynes) to produce 1,5-di-halo-1,4-dienes in excellent yields.

Dialkylboron chlorides react with aryl aldehydes to produce arylalkylmethanols in good to excellent yields. Under the same reaction conditions, alkylboron dichlorides lead to the formation of arylalkyl chlorides.

Reactions of aryl aldehydes with styrenes in the presence of boron trichloride in CH2Cl2 at 0°C produce 1,3-dichloro-1,3-diarylpropanes in excellent yields. Reactions carried out using boron tribromide generate the corresponding 1,3-dibromo-1,3-diarylpropane in good yields.

Reactions of aryl aldehydes with styrenes in the presence of boron trihalides produce 1,3-diaryl-1,3-dihalopropanes in excellent yields.

A new straightforward procedure has been developed for the synthesis of polysubstituted naphthalene derivatives. The reaction of alpha-aryl-substituted carbonyl compounds with terminal or internal alkynes in the presence of TiCl4 regioselectively generates substituted naphthalene derivatives in good to excellent yields.

Reactions of aryl aldehydes with styrene and (E)-β-methylstyrene in the presence of phenylboron dichloride regioselectively generate 1,3-diaryl-3-chloro-1-propanols and 1,3-diaryl-3-chloro-2-methyl-1-propanols in good to excellent yields with high stereoselectivity.

A practical, rapid, and efficient microwave (MW) promoted synthesis of various azides, thiocyanates, and sulfones is described in an aqueous medium. This general and expeditious MW-enhanced nucleophilic substitution approach uses easily accessible starting materials such as halides or tosylates in reaction with alkali azides, thiocyanates, or sulfinates in the absence of any phase-transfer catalyst, and a variety of reactive functional groups are tolerated.

Reactions of (Z)-2-halo-1-vinylboron dihalides (generated in situ via reaction of alkynes with boron trihalides) with lithium propargyloxides in CH(2)Cl(2) at room temperature produce the corresponding (Z)-1-halo-1,4-enynes in modest to good yields.

Organoboron chlorides and bromides are valuable reagents for halogenation and alkylation of aromatic aldehydes, addition of aldehydes to alkenes, and dialkenylation of aldehydes. An overview of these newly discovered reactions is presented.

Direct formation of tertiary amines viaN-alkylation of amines by alkyl halides occurs in aqueous media under microwave irradiation. This greener alternative is also a useful and powerful method to construct C–N bond without using any transition metal catalysts.
