Responses from 65 of 82 nursing schools with doctoral programs indicated that 56 have research support offices. The degree of investment in research support varied widely. The large number of schools receiving no National Institutes of Health funding suggests a need to consider research services in the context of faculty interest and motivation and school culture. Women receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) report more stress and have poorer health than women in the general population. Studies suggest chronic stress may contribute to poor health via physiological mechanisms, yet little is known about these mechanisms in this population. This study examined psychosocial stress, salivary cortisol, 24-hr ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate, and health among 40 single mothers before and after exiting TANF. As a group, perceived stress decreased after leaving TANF (p = .02), with other measures of psychosocial and physiological stress remaining unchanged. Within participants, changes in psychosocial stress predicted depression and general health over time (adjusted [R.sup.2] = .30 and .22; p = .006 and .004, respectively). These findings indicate psychosocial stress is positively associated with depression and negatively associated with general health as women exit welfare. Cerebral palsy cannot be cured but can be managed effectively. Symptoms can be partially controlled by pharmacological or surgical interventions. Occupational, physical, and speech therapy combined with support services may also be helpful to improve motor function, foster independence and develop ways of compensating for difficulties. Cerebral palsy is classified by the Swedish system as spastic, dyskinetic, ataxic or mixed. It includes a range of nonprogressive motor disabilities caused by central nervous system injuries affecting neuromotor systems. The injuries may occur in the prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal periods.

The use of improvisation techniques to demonstrate difficult concepts in physiology is evaluated. Improvisation, which is derived from creative drama, allows students to use their bodies to portray living components such as muscles and cells as well as physiological concepts such as muscle contraction. Initially, teachers may design an improvisation to introduce the technique to students. Later, students should design their own improvisation with side coaching from the teacher.
