The search for earth abundant, efficient and stable electrocatalysts that can enable the chemical reduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels at an industrially relevant scale, is a high priority for the development of a global network of renewable energy conversion and storage systems that can meaningfully impact greenhouse gas induced climate change. Here we introduce a straightforward, low cost, scalable and technologically relevant method to manufacture an all-carbon, electroactive, nitrogen-doped nanoporous carbon-carbon nanotube composite membrane, dubbed "HNCM-CNT". The membrane is demonstrated to function as a binder-free, high-performance electrode for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to formate. The Faradaic efficiency for the production of formate is 81%. Furthermore, the robust structural and electrochemical properties of the membrane endow it with excellent long-term stability.

Charged cyclic polymers, e.g. cyclic DNAs and polypeptides, play enabling roles in organisms, but their synthesis was challenging due to the well known polyelectrolyte effect. To tackle the challenge, we developed a templated method to synthesize a library of imidazolium and pyridinium based cyclic poly(ionic liquid)s. Cyclic templates, cyclic polyimidazole and poly(2-pyridine), were synthesized first through ring-closure method by light-induced Diels-Alder click reaction. Exploration of metal clusters (MCs) adaptive to both aqueous and oil phases without disturbing their size is promising for a broad scope of applications. The state-of-the-art approach via ligand-binding may perturb MC size due to varied metal-ligand binding strength when shuttling between solvents of different polarity. Herein, we applied physical confinement of a series of small noble MCs (less than 1 nm) inside ionic organic cages (I-Cages), which by means of anion exchange enables reversible transfer of MCs between aqueous and hydrophobic solutions without varying their ultrasmall size. This work demonstrates the use of imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) as efficient dispersants of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). With these polymeric dispersants, highly stable fine dispersions of MWCNTs (inks) can be easily prepared in aqueous media and applied for rather simple but efficient surface modification of screen-printed electrodes (SPEs). Such a modification of SPEs remarkably increases the electroactive surface area and accelerates the electron transfer rate due to synergistic combination of specific features of MWCNTs such as strong adsorptive property and high specific surface with the advantages of PILs like ion conductivity and dispersability. We further show that the PIL/MWCNT-modified SPEs can be beneficially utilized for direct electrochemical analysis of double stranded DNA (dsDNA). Specifically, it is exemplified by the direct electrooxidation of guanine and adenine bases in salmon testes dsDNA chosen as a model system. The linear ranges for the determination of dsDNA correspond to 5-500 microg per mL for the oxidative peak of guanine and 0.5-50 microg per mL for the oxidative peak of adenine. This makes direct electrochemical dsDNA detection with the use of the easy-preparable PIL/MWCNT-modified SPEs strongly competing to currently applied spectral and fluorescent techniques. Furthermore, we show that the developed constructs are capable of sensing a single point mutation in the 12-bases single-stranded DNA fragments. The performance of lithium and sodium ion batteries relies notably on the accessibility to carbon electrodes of controllable porous structure and chemical composition. This work reports a facile synthesis of well-defined porous N-doped carbons (NPCs) using a poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) as precursor, and graphene oxide (GO)-stabilized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles as sacrificial template. The GO-stabilized PMMA nanoparticles were first prepared and then decorated by a thin PIL coating before carbonization. The resulting NPCs reached a satisfactory specific surface area of up to 561 m2/g and a hierarchically meso- and macroporous structure while keeping a nitrogen content of 2.6 wt %. Such NPCs delivered a high reversible charge/discharge capacity of 1013 mA h/g over 200 cycles at 0.4 A/g for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), and showed a good capacity of 204 mA h/g over 100 cycles at 0.1 A/g for sodium ion batteries (SIBs)., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Porous heteroatom-doped carbons are desirable for catalytic reactions due to their tunable physicochemical properties, low cost and metal-free nature. Herein, we introduce a facile general bottom-up strategy, so-called "cooking carbon in a solid salt", to prepare hierarchically porous heteroatom-doped carbon foams by using poly(ionic liquid) as precursor and common inorganic salts as structural template. The obtained carbon foams bear micro-/meso-/macropores, large specific surface area and rich nitrogen dopant. Capture and conversion of CO2 are of great importance for environment-friendly and sustainable development of human society. Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) combine some unique properties of ILs with that of polymers and are versatile materials for CO2 utilization. In this contribution, we briefly outline innovative poly(ionic liquid)s emerged over the past few years, such as polytriazoliums, deep eutectic monomer (DEM) based PILs, and polyurethane PILs. Charged porous polymer membranes (CPMs) emerging as a multifunctional platform for diverse applications in chemistry, materials science, and biomedicine have been attracting widespread attention. Fabrication of CPMs in a controllable manner is of particular significance for optimizing their function and maximizing practical values. Herein, we report the fabrication of CPMs exclusively from poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs), and their pore size and wettability were precisely tailored by rational choice of the counteranions. Specifically, stepwise subtle increase in hydrophobicity of the counteranions by extending the length of fluorinated alkyl substituents, i.e. from bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide (Tf2N) to bis(pentafluoroethane sulfonyl)imide (Pf2N) and bis(heptafluoropropane sulfonyl)imide (Hf2N), decreases the average pore size gradually from 1546 nm to 157 nm and 77 nm, respectively. Meanwhile, their corresponding water contact angles increased from 90 degree to 102 degree and 120o. The exquisite control over the porous architectures and surface wettability of CPMs by systematic variation of the anion's hydrophobicity provides a solid proof of the impact of the PIL anions on CPMs' structure.

Herein we firstly introduce a straightforward, scalable and technologically relevant strategy to manufacture charged porous polymer membranes (CPMs) in a controllable manner. The pore sizes and porous architectures of CPMs are well-controlled by rational choice of anions in poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs). Porous poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) recently have been actively serving as a multifunctional, interdisciplinary materials platform in quite a few research areas, including separation, catalysis, actuator, sensor, and energy storage, just to name a few. In this context, the capability to photo-pattern PIL microstructures in a porous state on a substrate is still missing but is a crucial step for their real industrial usage. Here, we developed a method for in situ rapid patterning of porous PIL microstructures via a maskless photolithography approach coupled with a simple electrostatic complexation treatment. This breakthrough enables designs of miniaturized sensors. Ammonia, key precursor for fertilizer production, convenient hydrogen carrier and emerging clean fuel, plays a pivotal role in sustaining life on earth. Currently, the main route for NH3 synthesis is via the heterogeneous catalytic Haber-Bosch process (N2+3H2 - 2NH3), which proceeds under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure with a very large carbon footprint. Herein we report that a pristine nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphitic carbon membrane (NCM) can electrochemically convert N2 into NH3 in an aqueous acidic solution under ambient conditions. The Faradaic efficiency and rate of production of NH3 on the NCM electrode reach 5.2% and 0.08 g m-2 h-1, respectively. After functionalization of the NCM with Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) these performance metrics are dramatically enhanced to 22% and 0.36 g m-2 h-1, respectively. These efficiencies and rates for the production of NH3 at room temperature and atmospheric pressure are unprecedented. Glassy dynamics and charge transport are studied for the polymeric Ionic Liquid (PIL) poly(tris(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl)ammonium acryloxypropylsulfonate) (PAAPS) with varying molecular weight (9700, 44200, 51600 and 99500 g per mol) by Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) in a wide frequency (0.01 - 10E7 Hz) and temperature range (100 - 400 K) and by DSC- and AC-chip calorimetry. The dielectric spectra are characterized by a superposition of (i) relaxation processes, (ii) charge transport and (iii) electrode polarization. The relaxation processes (i) are assigned to the dynamic glass transition and a secondary relaxation. Charge transport (ii) can be described by the random free-energy barrier model as worked out by Dyre et al.; the Barton-Namikawa-Nakajima (BNN) relationship is well fulfilled over more than 8 decades. Electrode polarization (iii) follows the characteristics as analyzed by Serghei et al.; with deviations on the low frequency side. The proportionality between the relaxation rate of the dynamic glass transition and the charge carrier hopping rate reflects the nature of charge transport as glass transition assisted hopping. Hereby, the PIL under study exposes the highest dc-conductivity values observed for this class of materials below 100 oC so far, and for the first time a conductivity increase by rising degree of polymerization. CO2 capture is a pressing global environmental issue that drives scientists to develop creative strategies for tackling this challenge. The concept in this contribution is to produce site specific nitrogen doping in microporous carbon fibers. It creates a carbon/carbon heterojunction by using poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) as soft activation agent that deposits nitrogen species exclusively on the skin of commercial microporous carbon fibers. Sustainable development and the recent fast growing global demands for energy and functional chemicals urgently call for effective methods for CO2 remediation and efficient metal-free catalysts for selective oxidation of aromatic alcohol. Herein, a unique main-chain poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) is employed as the precursor to prepare nitrogen doped micro and mesoporous carbons via simultaneous carbonization and activation, which bear high yield, large specific surface area above 1700 m2 per g and rich nitrogen dopant. The porous carbon products deliver a high CO2 adsorption capacity up to 6.2 mmol per g at 273 K and 1 bar with outstanding reversibility and satisfactory selectivity. Besides, they work excellently as metal free carbocatalysts for the selective aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with high selectivity. The capability to synthesize a broad spectrum of metal clusters (MCs) with their size controllable in a subnanometer scale presents an enticing prospect for exploring nanosize-dependent properties. Here we report an innovative design of a capping agent from a polytriazolium poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) in a vesicular form in solution that allows for crafting a variety of MCs including transition metals, noble metals, and their bimetallic alloy with precisely controlled sizes (~ 1 nm) and record-high catalytic performance. The ultrastrong stabilization power is result of an unusual synergy between the conventional binding sites in the heterocyclic cations in PIL, and an in-situ generated polycarbene structure induced simultaneously to the reduction reaction. Porous and flexible actuating materials are important in the development of smart systems. We report here a facile method to prepare scalable, flexible actuating porous membranes based on a poly(ionic liquid)-modified tissue paper. The targeted membrane property profile was based on a synergy of a gradient porous structure of poly(ionic liquid) network and the flexibility of tissue paper. The gradient porous structure was built up through ammonia-triggered electrostatic complexation of a poly(ionic liquid) with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) that were previously impregnated inside the tissue paper. As a result, these porous membranes undergo bending deformation in response to organic solvents in vapor or liquid phase and can recover their shape back in air, which was demonstrated to be able to serve as solvent sensors. Besides, they show enhanced mechanical properties due to the introduction of mechanically flexible tissue paper that allows the membranes to be designed as new responsive textiles and contractile actuators., Comment: 37 pages, 28 figures

To extend fossil oil supplies, sustainable feed stocks for the production of useful reagents and polymers should be harnessed. In this regard, chemicals derived from plants are excellent candidates. While the vast majority of plant sources used for polymer science only contain CxHyOz, alkaloids such as caffeine, nicotine, and theophylline possess nitrogen functionality that can provide new functions for bio-derived polymers and their synthesis. In this context, we exploited the chemistry of theophylline, a natural product found in chocolate and tea, to create a cationic poly(theophylline) in a straightforward fashion for the first time. This paper reports on the one-pot synthesis of main-chain imidazolium-containing polymers, some of which show unusually high thermal stability. The imidazolium polymers were obtained by modified Debus-Radziszewski reactions for the chain build-up from simple organic compounds, here pyruvaldehyde, formaldehyde, acetic acid, and a variety of diamines. The reactions were performed in aqueous media at ambient conditions, being synthetically elegant, convenient and highly efficient. Finally, a simple anion-metathesis reaction was conducted to replace the acetate anion with dicyanamide, and the thermal properties of the main-chain polyimidazoliums before and after anion exchange were studied in detail, which demonstrated chain cross-linking by the counterion and a coupled unusually high carbonization yield of up to 66 wt% at 900 oC., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

Self-supported electrocatalysts being generated and employed directly as electrode for energy conversion has been intensively pursued in the fields of materials chemistry and energy. Herein, we report a synthetic strategy to prepare freestanding hierarchically structured, nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphitic carbon membranes functionalized with Janus-type Co/CoP nanocrystals (termed as HNDCM-Co/CoP), which were successfully applied as a highly-efficient, binder-free electrode in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Benefited from multiple structural merits, such as high degree of graphitization, three-dimensionally interconnected micro-/meso-/macropores, uniform nitrogen-doping, well-dispersed Co/CoP nanocrystals as well as the confinement effect of the thin carbon layer on the nanocrystals, HNDCM-Co/CoP exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity and long-term operation stability for HER under both acid and alkaline conditions. As a proof-of-concept of practical usage, a macroscopic piece of HNDCM-Co/CoP of 5.6 cm x 4 cm x 60 um in size was prepared in our laboratory. Driven by a solar cell, electroreduction of water in alkaline condition (pH 14) was performed, and H2 has been produced at a rate of 16 ml/min, demonstrating its potential as real-life energy conversion systems., Comment: 31 pages, 15 pages

Imidazolium based porous cationic polymers were synthesized using an innovative and facile approach, which takes advantage of the Debus Radziszewski reaction to obtain meso- and microporous polymers following click chemistry principles. In the obtained set of materials, click based porous cationic polymers have the same cationic backbone, whereas they bear the commonly used anions of imidazolium poly(ionic liquid)s. These materials show hierarchical porosity and a good specific surface area. Furthermore, their chemical structure was extensively characterized using ATR FTIR and SS NMR spectroscopies, and HR MS. These polymers show good performance towards carbon dioxide sorption, especially those possessing the acetate anion. This polymer has an uptake of 2 mmol per g of CO2 at 1 bar and 273 K, a value which is among the highest recorded for imidazolium poly(ionic liquid)s. These polymers were also modified in order to introduce N-heterocyclic carbenes along the backbone. Carbon dioxide loading in the carbene-containing polymer is in the same range as that of the non-modified versions, but the nature of the interaction is substantially different. The combined use of in situ FTIR spectroscopy and microcalorimetry evidenced a chemisorption phenomenon that brings about the formation of an imidazolium carboxylate zwitterion., Comment: 29 page, 33 figures

Porous poly(ionic liquid) membranes that were prepared via electrostatic cross-linking were subsequently covalently cross-linked via formation of a 1,3,5-triazine network. Nanoporous graphitic carbon membranes with defined chemical composition and pore architecture are novel nanomaterials that are actively pursued. Compared to easy-to-make porous carbon powders that dominate the porous carbon research and applications in energy generation/conversion and environmental remediation, porous carbon membranes are synthetically more challenging though rather appealing from an application perspective due to their structural integrity, interconnectivity and purity. Here we report a simple bottom-up approach to fabricate large-size, freestanding, porous carbon membranes that feature an unusual single-crystal-like graphitic order and hierarchical pore architecture plus favorable nitrogen doping. The past decade has witnessed the rapid progress in synthesizing nanoporous organic networks or polymer frameworks for various potential applications. Generally speaking, functionalization of porous networks to add extra properties and enhance materials performance could be achieved either during the pore formation (thus a concurrent approach) or post-synthetic modification (a sequential approach). Nanoporous organic networks which include ion pairs in a covalent manner are of special importance and possess extreme application profiles. Within these nanoporous ionic organic networks (NIONs), here with a pore size in the range from sub-1 nm to 100 nm, we observe a synergistic coupling of the electrostatic interaction of charges, the nanoconfinement within pores and the addressable functional units in soft matter resulting in a wide variety of functions and applications, above all catalysis, energy storage and conversion, as well as environmental operations. A composite porous polymer membrane with aligned CNTs in its matrix is developed which exhibits programmable, anisotropic actuation towards organic vapors. The alignment of CNTs in multiple directions and the gradient porous structure of the membrane are critical for the actuation, and the actuating direction can be well controlled at a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal orientation of CNTs. The reversible actuation may be repeated for 300 cycles without obvious fatigue. These polymer composites are promising building blocks for a wide variety of applications such as sensors and actuators.
