1. Troll sex : youth, old age, and the erotic in Old Norse-Icelandic narratives of the supernatural

Abstract

In this thesis, I investigate representations of adolescent and elderly sexuality from throughout the medieval Icelandic saga corpus. To access expressions regarding these liminal sexualities, I pay particular attention to depictions of supernatural phenomena. Because of their distance from everyday reality, such depictions can be used to express uninhibited commentaries about uncomfortable subjects. They can therefore provide us with expanded, nuanced, or alternative perspectives on the sexual ideologies indicated in naturalistic episodes and non-literary sources. Chapter One examines portrayals of male adolescent sexuality. I analyse supernatural ‘riding’ episodes from Eyrbyggja saga and Illuga saga Gríðarfóstra, which depict the violent sexual domination of women by young men as beneficial to masculine adult supremacy. I then analyse portrayals of trysts with troll-women in four sagas, which offer diverse commentaries on the impact of pre-marital sexual experimentation on male maturation. Chapter Two investigates depictions of female adolescent sexuality. I examine the ghostly sexual assault of a teenage girl in Heiðarvíga saga, an attack that is partly blamed on her nascent erotic volatility. I then consider a maiden-king episode from Sigrgarðs saga frækna, which conversely defends young women’s active engagement in the marital and sexual spheres. Chapter Three examines representations of elderly male sexuality. I analyse senex amans episodes in Hrólfs saga kraka and Hjálmþés saga ok Ölvis, which lament the loss of male socio-sexual power during senescence. However, the following examination of rapacious revenants indicates that, though this decline is regrettable, resisting it could be considered even more problematic. Chapter Four considers elderly female sexuality, which is almost exclusively denigrated throughout the corpus. Consistent with this trend, the Fróðárundur of Eyrbyggja saga are interpreted as symbolic criticisms of the sexuality of the menopausal Þórgunna. However, the ubiquity of this trend is then contested, with reference to the beneficial eroticism of ancient, supernatural foster-mothers.

An illustrated examination of Mark Leckey's celebrated video montage.In 1999, the British artist Mark Leckey released his video-montage Fiorucci made me Hardcore, a dreamscape vignette that communes with the rapturous promises of youth. Putting archive material to use, Leckey entwined footage of underground dance and street culture in Britain with audio grifted and recorded in the artist's studio. In this illustrated study, the first comprehensive examination of the work, Mitch Speed argues that by interweaving personal and collective memory, this work gives voice to the complexities of class and cultural transformation during Britain's Thatcherite era. Oscillating between local and expansive resonances, Fiorucci made me Hardcore takes form as a homage, love letter, and work of criticism that eschews analysis, instead incanting the deeper implications of its subject.

Abstract

The premise of Anna Green's timely and original book, is that nineteenth-century representations of childhood and adolescence-in paintings, but also in other forms of visual culture and in diverse written discourses of the period-are critical for understanding modernity. Whilst such well-worn signifiers for modernity as the city, the dandy and the prostitute have been well mined, childhood and adolescence have not. Paintings of the young produced in France from 1848 to 1886, Green contends, inform not only our understanding of modern life but also our perception of modernist or avant-garde painting. Figuring largely are Manet and the Impressionists, as well as a gamut of more traditional painters of children who are crucial in providing context for the avant garde. Because modernity is an essentially urban phenomenon, Green's focus is primarily on the city, usually Parisian, child. The painted youth of her study are organized initially by class and gender. Then the chapters are structured according to themes (parent-child relations, modes of discipline, work, education, and play, the spectacle, sexuality) that straddle the congruences among the book's triple trajectory: the young, their modernist representations, and the experience of modernity. Green's interdisciplinary approach ensures that this book will be of interest not only to art historians but to all those concerned with the cultural and social history of childhood.

All interpretations of the celebrated Motya Youth, dating to about 480–450 BCE, have neglected the full significance of the five holes on the statue's head, which were there since its discovery in 1979. A reinterpretation of the figure taking these holes into consideration points to its identity as an initiate of Apollo Karneios, shown at rest after having performed the dance in honor of the god. Participatory Action Research (PAR) involves collaborative construction of knowledge among researchers and local actors. Collaboration is particularly challenging for researchers when working with subaltern populations, as we experienced in a PAR project shared with young people living in extreme poverty in the Greater Buenos Aires area. The objective was to promote educational rights, based on a participatory diagnosis of factors associated with school abandonment. The main challenge was young people’s reluctance to address their school experience, due to stigmatization processes associated with school failure. Video production and dramatization helped us to overcome this blockage and to make youth perspectives visible to other social actors in the educational field. Contemporary mapping theories argue that mapping is a creative activity that focuses on the process of mapping rather than on the object of maps. As opposed to traditional views of maps as stable and complete, contemporary cartographies recognize mapping's partial and provisional nature. Thus, mapping is not just an archive of projected points and lines onto a surface, often referred to as a trace; it is a dynamic and complex actualization of un/foldings. Furthermore, rather than a view of space as an empty vessel that objects are placed within, feminist reconceptualizations link space with corporeality and subjectivity. Therefore, what we need to examine is how spaces and bodies are simultaneously created in the process of mapping. In this paper, I examine short segments of student-created videos, investigating how these works of art question subjectivity, representation, and meaning making in relation to bodied space. In doing so I draw on contemporary mapping theories that conceptualize the process of mapping as disruptive and differential, and which enable alternative ways of inhabiting space. Subsequently theories of the fold will also shape an understanding of intercorporeal cartographic meaning making with, in, and through touch. In doing so I argue that what we know is intersected with experience and our corporeal subjectivity. This I contend is paramount in thinking of curriculum inquiry as a process of bodied encounters constructed with, in, and through space. Consequently my arguments are linked to theories of .art education that are located in explorations of identity and subjectivity. Rather than posing questions "about" the body, or how "the body" is represented in visual culture, my analyses disclose the very ways that students negotiate and mediate the contested terrains of body knowledge and subsequently interrogate what it means to know, inhabit, experience, and encounter embodied space. Visual narratives from popular culture, artists' work, and children's play that use graphic or electronic genres such as comic strips, paper dolls, and coloring books will be described throughout. A special focus will be given on art projects on the topic of permutable identity, and on the relations between body and machine. 49. Imperfect art: working in public: a case study of the Oakland Projects (1991-2001).

Abstract

In Mapping the Terrain: New Genre Public Art (1994) the author called for a new language of critique for the transient and publicly located art practices known today as social, or public, practices. Since that time authors have taken up the challenge to site the work in art historical, philosophical, and cultural contexts and to assess its aesthetic merits. One of the major themes is how, exactly, the social claims in this work can be calculated. This paper adds to that discourse through the examination of a complex and lengthy set of art projects in Oakland, California, through the lens of critical pedagogy. The Oakland Projects (including performance, installation, exhibition, civic action, curriculum, and workshops) focused on social circumstances, popular media representation, and public policies regarding urban juveniles in California between 1991–2001. This research examined five sites: institutions within health, education, criminal justice, and civic policy, and youth experience. The praxis of classroom teaching and theories on education and democracy found in the literature of critical pedagogy offer a possible way to examine how this work might operate in the public sphere. The author traces the threads of a personal historiography of two significant teachers (in the 1970s) that metaphorically and practically provide a nexus of educational reform and avant-garde art as background to the examination of the Oakland Projects. In the process key issues in the work, including aesthetics and ethics, are examined, but the focus is on how forms of pedagogy - from the expanded notion of public pedagogy to the intimate level of the mentoring relationship - add dimension to the work's claim to hold a relevant place within both the public and professional art spheres.
