Treatment selection in breast cancer is guided by molecular subtypes and clinical characteristics. Recurrence risk assessment plays a crucial role in personalizing treatment. Current methods, including genomic assays, have limited accuracy and clinical utility, leading to suboptimal decisions for many patients. We developed a test for breast cancer patient stratification based on digital pathology and clinical characteristics using novel AI methods. Specifically, we utilized a vision transformer-based pan-cancer foundation model trained with self-supervised learning to extract features from digitized H&E-stained slides. These features were integrated with clinical data to form a multi-modal AI test predicting cancer recurrence and death. The test was developed and evaluated using data from a total of 8,161 breast cancer patients across 15 cohorts originating from seven countries. Of these, 3,502 patients from five cohorts were used exclusively for evaluation, while the remaining patients were used for training. Our test accurately predicted our primary endpoint, disease-free interval, in the five external cohorts (C-index: 0.71 [0.68-0.75], HR: 3.63 [3.02-4.37, p<0.01]). In a direct comparison (N=858), the AI test was more accurate than Oncotype DX, the standard-of-care 21-gene assay, with a C-index of 0.67 [0.61-0.74] versus 0.61 [0.49-0.73], respectively. Additionally, the AI test added independent information to Oncotype DX in a multivariate analysis (HR: 3.11 [1.91-5.09, p<0.01)]). The test demonstrated robust accuracy across all major breast cancer subtypes, including TNBC (C-index: 0.71 [0.62-0.81], HR: 3.81 [2.35-6.17, p=0.02]), where no diagnostic tools are currently recommended by clinical guidelines. These results suggest that our AI test can improve accuracy, extend applicability to a wider range of patients, and enhance access to treatment selection tools.

As we enter the era of big data, collecting high-quality data is very important. However, collecting data by humans is not only very time-consuming but also expensive. Therefore, many scientists have devised various methods to collect data using computers. Among them, there is a method called web crawling, but the authors found that the crawling method has a problem in that unintended data is collected along with the user. The authors found that this can be filtered using the object recognition model YOLOv10. However, there are cases where data that is not properly filtered remains. Here, image reclassification was performed by additionally utilizing the distance output from the Siamese network, and higher performance was recorded than other classification models. The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time., Comment: Corresponding author: S. Resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) crossbar arrays are suitable for efficient inference computations in neural networks due to their analog general matrix-matrix multiplication (GEMM) capabilities. However, traditional ReRAM-based accelerators suffer from spatial and temporal underutilization. We present HURRY, a reconfigurable and multifunctional ReRAM-based in-situ accelerator. HURRY uses a block activation scheme for concurrent activation of dynamically sized ReRAM portions, enhancing spatial utilization. Additionally, it incorporates functional blocks for convolution, ReLU, max pooling, and softmax computations to improve temporal utilization. System-level scheduling and data mapping strategies further optimize performance. Consequently, HURRY achieves up to 3.35x speedup, 5.72x higher energy efficiency, and 7.91x greater area efficiency compared to current ReRAM-based accelerators.

Interconnection networks, or `interconnects,' play a crucial role in administering the communication among computing units of high-performance computing (HPC) systems. Efficient provisioning of interconnects minimizes the processing delay wherein computing units await information sharing between each other, thereby enhancing the overall computation efficiency. Ideally, interconnects are designed with topologies tailored to match specific workflows, requiring diverse structures for different applications. However, since modifying their structures mid-operation renders impractical, indirect communication incurs across distant units. In managing numerous long-routed data deliveries, heavy burdens on the network side may lead to the under-utilization of computing resources. In view of state-of-the-art HPC paradigms that solicit dense interconnections for diverse computation-hungry applications, this article presents a versatile wireless interconnecting framework, coined as Wireless Interconnection NEtwork (WINE). The framework exploits cutting-edge wireless technologies that promote workload adaptability and scalability of modern interconnects. Design and implementation of wirelessly reliable links are strategized under network-oriented scrutiny of HPC architectures. Digital pathology has made significant advances in tumor diagnosis and segmentation, but image variability due to differences in organs, tissue preparation, and acquisition - known as domain shift - limits the effectiveness of current algorithms. The COSAS (Cross-Organ and Cross-Scanner Adenocarcinoma Segmentation) challenge addresses this issue by improving the resilience of segmentation algorithms to domain shift, with Task 2 focusing on adenocarcinoma segmentation using a diverse dataset from six scanners, pushing the boundaries of clinical diagnostics. Our approach employs unsupervised learning through stain separation within a multi-task learning framework using a multi-decoder autoencoder. This model isolates stain matrix and stain density, allowing it to handle color variation and improve generalization across scanners. We further enhanced the robustness of the model with a mixture of stain augmentation techniques and used a U-net architecture for segmentation. The novelty of our method lies in the use of stain separation within a multi-task learning framework, which effectively disentangles histological structures from color variations. This approach shows promise for improving segmentation accuracy and generalization across different histopathological stains, paving the way for more reliable diagnostic tools in digital pathology.

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has emerged as an essential material for the encapsulation layer in van der Waals heterostructures and efficient deep ultra-violet optoelectronics. This is primarily due to its remarkable physical properties and ultrawide bandgap (close to 6 eV, and even larger in some cases) properties. Color centers in hBN refer to intrinsic vacancies and extrinsic impurities within the 2D crystal lattice, which result in distinct optical properties in the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (IR) range. Furthermore, each color center in hBN exhibits a unique emission spectrum and possesses various spin properties. These characteristics open up possibilities for the development of next-generation optoelectronics and quantum information applications, including room-temperature single-photon sources and quantum sensors. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the atomic configuration, optical and quantum properties, and different techniques employed for the formation of color centers in hBN. A deep understanding of color centers in hBN allows for advances in the development of next-generation UV optoelectronic applications, solid-state quantum technologies, and nanophotonics by harnessing the exceptional capabilities offered by hBN color centers.

Social problems stemming from the shortage of radiologists are intensifying, and artificial intelligence is being highlighted as a potential solution. Recently emerging large-scale generative AI has expanded from large language models (LLMs) to multi-modal models, showing potential to revolutionize the entire process of medical imaging. However, comprehensive reviews on their development status and future challenges are currently lacking. This scoping review systematically organizes existing literature on the clinical value of large-scale generative AI applications by following PCC guidelines. A systematic search was conducted across four databases: PubMed, EMbase, IEEE-Xplore, and Google Scholar, and 15 studies meeting the inclusion/exclusion criteria set by the researchers were reviewed. Most of these studies focused on improving the efficiency of report generation in specific parts of the interpretation process or on translating reports to aid patient understanding, with the latest studies extending to AI applications performing direct interpretations. All studies were quantitatively evaluated by clinicians, with most utilizing LLMs and only three employing multi-modal models. Both LLMs and multi-modal models showed excellent results in specific areas, but none yet outperformed radiologists in diagnostic performance. Most studies utilized GPT, with few using models specialized for the medical imaging domain. This study provides insights into the current state and limitations of large-scale generative AI-based applications in the medical imaging field, offering foundational data and suggesting that the era of medical imaging foundation models is on the horizon, which may fundamentally transform clinical practice in the near future., Comment: 25 pages,3 figures, 4 tables, submitted to NPJ imaging

Evidence has emerged for a stochastic signal correlated among 67 pulsars within the 15-year pulsar-timing data set compiled by the NANOGrav collaboration. Similar signals have been found in data from the European, Indian, Parkes, and Chinese PTAs. This signal has been interpreted as indicative of the presence of a nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background. To explore the internal consistency of this result we investigate how the recovered signal strength changes as we remove the pulsars one by one from the data set. We calculate the signal strength using the (noise-marginalized) optimal statistic, a frequentist metric designed to measure correlated excess power in the residuals of the arrival times of the radio pulses. We identify several features emerging from this analysis that were initially unexpected. The significance of these features, however, can only be assessed by comparing the real data to synthetic data sets. After conducting identical analyses on simulated data sets, we do not find anything inconsistent with the presence of a stochastic gravitational wave background in the NANOGrav 15-year data. The methodologies developed here can offer additional tools for application to future, more sensitive data sets. This paper introduces a dual-arm telerobotic platform designed to efficiently and safely execute hot cell operations for nuclear waste disposition at EM sites. The proposed system consists of a remote robot arm platform and a teleoperator station, both integrated with a software architecture to control the entire system. The dual-arm configuration of the remote platform enhances versatility and task performance in complex and hazardous environments, ensuring precise manipulation and effective handling of nuclear waste materials. The integration of a teleoperator station enables human teleoperator to remotely control the entire system real-time, enhancing decision-making capabilities, situational awareness, and dexterity. The control software plays a crucial role in our system, providing a robust and intuitive interface for the teleoperator. This paper delves into various robotic manipulation control methods designed for dynamic contact tooling operations on a robotic repair platform. The explored control strategies include hybrid position-force control, admittance control, bilateral telerobotic control, virtual fixture, and shared control. Each approach is elucidated and assessed in terms of its applicability and effectiveness for handling contact tooling tasks in real-world repair scenarios. The hybrid position-force controller is highlighted for its proficiency in executing precise force-required tasks, but it demands contingent on an accurate model of the environment and structured, static environment. In contrast, for unstructured environments, bilateral teleoperation control is investigated, revealing that the compliance with the remote robot controller is crucial for stable contact, albeit at the expense of reduced motion tracking performance. The recent discovery of the van der Waals (vdW) layered heavy fermion antiferromagnetic metal CeSiI offers promising potential for achieving accessible quantum criticality in the two-dimensional (2D) limit. CeSiI exhibits both heavy fermion behavior and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering, while the exact magnetic structure and phase diagram have yet to be determined. Here, we investigate magnetic properties of atomically thin CeSiI devices with thicknesses ranging from 2-15 vdW layers. The thickness-dependent magnetotransport measurement reveals an intrinsic 2D nature of heavy fermion behavior and antiferromagnetism. Notably, we also find an isotropic, time-dependent hysteresis in both magnetoresistance and Hall resistance, showing glassy relaxation dynamics. This glassy behavior in magnetic structures may suggest the presence of spin glass phases or multipolar ordering, further establishing CeSiI as an intriguing material system for investigating the interplay between magnetic orders and the Kondo effect., Comment: 31 pages, 4 main figures, 7 extended data figures

Pulsar timing array observations have found evidence for an isotropic gravitational wave background with the Hellings-Downs angular correlations, expected from general relativity. This interpretation hinges on the measured shape of the angular correlations, which is predominately quadrupolar under general relativity. Here we explore a more flexible parameterization: we expand the angular correlations into a sum of Legendre polynomials and use a Bayesian analysis to constrain their coefficients with the 15-year pulsar timing data set collected by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav). When including Legendre polynomials with multipoles $\ell \geq 2$, we only find a significant signal in the quadrupole with an amplitude consistent with general relativity and non-zero at the $\sim 95\%$ confidence level and a Bayes factor of 200. When we include multipoles $\ell \leq 1$, the Bayes factor evidence for quadrupole correlations decreases by more than an order of magnitude due to evidence for a monopolar signal at approximately 4 nHz which has also been noted in previous analyses of the NANOGrav 15-year data. Further work needs to be done in order to better characterize the properties of this monopolar signal and its effect on the evidence for quadrupolar angular correlations., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

In this paper we formulate the almost invariant subspaces theorems of backward shift operators in terms of the ranges or kernels of product of Toeplitz and Hankel operators. This approach simplifies and gives more explicit forms of these almost invariant subspaces which are derived from related nearly backward shift invariant subspaces with finite defect. Furthermore, this approach also leads to the surprising result that the almost invariant subspaces of backward shift operators are the same as the almost invariant subspaces of forward shift operators which were treated only briefly in literature., Comment: 21 pages

The Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) is the first in-ice radio array in the northern hemisphere for the detection of ultra-high energy neutrinos via the coherent radio emission from neutrino-induced particle cascades within the ice. The array is currently in phased construction near Summit Station on the Greenland ice sheet, with 7~stations deployed during the first two boreal summer field seasons of 2021 and 2022. In this paper, we describe the installation and system design of these initial RNO-G stations, and discuss the performance of the array as of summer 2024.

In this work, we investigate an important class of nonequilibrium dynamics in the form of nonreciprocal interactions. In particular, we study how nonreciprocal coupling between two $O(n_i)$ order parameters (with $i=1,2$) affects the universality at a multicritical point, extending the analysis of [J.T. Young et al., Phys. Rev. X 10, 011039 (2020)], which considered the case $n_1 = n_2 = 1$, i.e., a $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ model. We show that nonequilibrium fixed points (NEFPs) emerge for a broad range of $n_1,n_2$ and exhibit intrinsically nonequilibrium critical phenomena, namely a violation of fluctuation-dissipation relations at all scales and underdamped oscillations near criticality in contrast to the overdamped relaxational dynamics of the corresponding equilibrium models. Furthermore, the NEFPs exhibit an emergent discrete scale invariance in certain physically-relevant regimes of $n_1,n_2$, but not others, depending on whether the critical exponent $\nu$ is real or complex. The boundary between these two regions is described by an exceptional point in the renormalization group (RG) flow, leading to distinctive features in correlation functions and the phase diagram. Another contrast with the previous work is the number and stability of the NEFPs as well as the underlying topology of the RG flow. Finally, we investigate an extreme form of nonreciprocity where one order parameter is independent of the other order parameter but not vice versa. Unlike the $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ model, which becomes non-perturbative in this case, we identify a distinct nonequilibrium universality class whose dependent field similarly violates fluctuation-dissipation relations but does not exhibit discrete scale invariance or underdamped oscillations near criticality., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

The integration of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) with Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) has expanded the scope of multimodal query resolution. However, current systems struggle with intent understanding, information retrieval, and safety filtering, limiting their effectiveness. This paper introduces Contextual Understanding and Enhanced Search with MLLM (CUE-M), a novel multimodal search pipeline that addresses these challenges through a multi-stage framework comprising image context enrichment, intent refinement, contextual query generation, external API integration, and relevance-based filtering. CUE-M incorporates a robust safety framework combining image-based, text-based, and multimodal classifiers, dynamically adapting to instance- and category-specific risks. Evaluations on a multimodal Q&A dataset and a public safety benchmark demonstrate that CUE-M outperforms baselines in accuracy, knowledge integration, and safety, advancing the capabilities of multimodal retrieval systems., Comment: Preprint. Identifying amyloid-beta positive patients is crucial for determining eligibility for Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials and new disease-modifying treatments, but currently requires PET or CSF sampling. Previous MRI-based deep learning models for predicting amyloid positivity, using only T1w sequences, have shown moderate performance. We trained deep learning models to predict amyloid PET positivity and evaluated whether multi-contrast inputs improve performance. A total of 4,058 exams with multi-contrast MRI and PET-based quantitative amyloid deposition were obtained from three public datasets: the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), the Open Access Series of Imaging Studies 3 (OASIS3), and the Anti-Amyloid Treatment in Asymptomatic Alzheimer's Disease (A4). Two separate EfficientNet models were trained for amyloid positivity prediction: one with only T1w images and the other with both T1w and T2-FLAIR images as network inputs. The area under the curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were determined using an internal held-out test set. The trained models were further evaluated using an external test set. In the held-out test sets, the T1w and T1w+T2FLAIR models demonstrated AUCs of 0.62 (95% CI: 0.60, 0.64) and 0.67 (95% CI: 0.64, 0.70) (p = 0.006); accuracies were 61% (95% CI: 60%, 63%) and 64% (95% CI: 62%, 66%) (p = 0.008); sensitivities were 0.88 and 0.71; and specificities were 0.23 and 0.53, respectively. The trained models showed similar performance in the external test set. Performance of the current model on both test sets exceeded that of the publicly available model. In conclusion, the use of multi-contrast MRI, specifically incorporating T2-FLAIR in addition to T1w images, significantly improved the predictive accuracy of PET-determined amyloid status from MRI scans using a deep learning approach., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

ABC-stacked rhombohedral graphene multilayers exhibit a wide variety of electronic ground states characterized by broken isospin symmetry and superconductivity. Recently, indirect evidence of inter-valley coherent (IVC) order has been reported in rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG), with possible implications for the origin of superconductivity. Here, we report the direct visualization of IVC order in RTG using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Tuning the chemical potential through the Van Hove singularity near the edge of the valence band, we observe a cascade of phase transitions associated with the formation of half- and quarter-metal states. IVC phases, distinguished by an enlarged real space unit cell, are directly imaged near both the high- and low-density boundaries of the half-metal phase. At high hole density, we precisely reconstruct the IVC band structure through quasiparticle interference. Intriguingly, the charge density modulations reveal a C3-symmetric incommensurate IVC order that agrees with the recent prediction of an IVC-crystal phase. This paper addresses domain adaptation challenges in graph data resulting from chronological splits. In a transductive graph learning setting, where each node is associated with a timestamp, we focus on the task of Semi-Supervised Node Classification (SSNC), aiming to classify recent nodes using labels of past nodes. Temporal dependencies in node connections create domain shifts, causing significant performance degradation when applying models trained on historical data into recent data. Given the practical relevance of this scenario, addressing domain adaptation in chronological split data is crucial, yet underexplored. We propose Imposing invariance with Message Passing in Chronological split Temporal Graphs (IMPaCT), a method that imposes invariant properties based on realistic assumptions derived from temporal graph structures. Unlike traditional domain adaptation approaches which rely on unverifiable assumptions, IMPaCT explicitly accounts for the characteristics of chronological splits. The IMPaCT is further supported by rigorous mathematical analysis, including a derivation of an upper bound of the generalization error. Experimentally, IMPaCT achieves a 3.8% performance improvement over current SOTA method on the ogbn-mag graph dataset. Additionally, we introduce the Temporal Stochastic Block Model (TSBM), which replicates temporal graphs under varying conditions, demonstrating the applicability of our methods to general spatial GNNs., Comment: 11 pages (without appendix), 35 pages (with appendix), 14 figures

Alignment of large language models (LLMs) to societal values should account for pluralistic values from diverse groups. One technique uses in-context learning for inference-time alignment, but only considers similarity when drawing few-shot examples, not accounting for cross-group differences in value prioritization. We propose SPICA, a framework for pluralistic alignment that accounts for group-level differences during in-context example retrieval. SPICA introduces three designs to facilitate pluralistic alignment: scenario banks, group-informed metrics, and in-context alignment prompts. From an evaluation of SPICA on an alignment task collecting inputs from four demographic groups ($n = 544$), our metrics retrieve in-context examples that more closely match observed preferences, with the best prompt configuration using multiple contrastive responses to demonstrate examples. In an end-to-end evaluation ($n = 80$), we observe that SPICA-aligned models are higher rated than a baseline similarity-only retrieval approach, with groups seeing up to a +0.16 point improvement on a 5 point scale. Additionally, gains from SPICA were more uniform, with all groups benefiting from alignment rather than only some. Finally, we find that while a group-agnostic approach can effectively align to aggregated values, it is not most suited for aligning to divergent groups.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown the potential to be valuable teaching tools, with the potential of giving every student a personalized tutor. However, one challenge with using LLMs to learn new concepts is that when learning a topic in an unfamiliar domain, it can be difficult to know what questions to ask. Further, language models do not always encourage "active learning" where students can test and assess their understanding. In this paper, we propose ways to combine large language models with "traditional" learning materials (like e-books) to give readers the benefits of working with LLMs (the ability to ask personally interesting questions and receive personalized answers) with the benefits of a traditional e-book (having a structure and content that is pedagogically sound). We consider the statistics of the results of a measurement of the spreading operator in the Krylov basis generated by the Hamiltonian of a quantum system starting from a specified initial pure state. We first obtain the probability distribution of the results of measurements of this spreading operator at a certain instant of time, and compute the characteristic function of this distribution. We show that the moments of this characteristic function are related to the so-called generalised spread complexities, and obtain expressions for them in several cases when the Hamiltonian is an element of a Lie algebra. Furthermore, by considering a continuum limit of the Krylov basis, we show that the generalised spread complexities of higher orders have a peak in the time evolution for a random matrix Hamiltonian belonging to the Gaussian unitary ensemble. We also obtain an upper bound in the change in generalised spread complexity at an arbitrary time in terms of the operator norm of the Hamiltonian and discuss the significance of these results.

Pandharipande-Thomas theory and Donaldson-Thomas theory (PT and DT) are two branches of enumerative geometry in which particular generating functions arise that count plane-partition-like objects. That these generating functions differ only by a factor of MacMahon's function was proven recursively by Jenne, Webb, and Young using the double dimer model. This study investigates the sleep characteristics and brain activity of individuals in the gray zone of insomnia, a population that experiences sleep disturbances yet does not fully meet the clinical criteria for chronic insomnia. Thirteen healthy participants and thirteen individuals from the gray zone were assessed using polysomnography and electroencephalogram to analyze both sleep architecture and neural activity. Although no significant differences in objective sleep quality or structure were found between the groups, gray zone individuals reported higher insomnia severity index scores, indicating subjective sleep difficulties. Electroencephalography (EEG) plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of various neurological disorders. However, small hospitals and clinics often lack advanced EEG signal analysis systems and are prone to misinterpretation in manual EEG reading. This study proposes an innovative hybrid artificial intelligence (AI) system for automatic interpretation of EEG background activity and report generation. The system combines deep learning models for posterior dominant rhythm (PDR) prediction, unsupervised artifact removal, and expert-designed algorithms for abnormality detection. For PDR prediction, 1530 labeled EEGs were used, and the best ensemble model achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.237, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.359, an accuracy of 91.8% within a 0.6Hz error, and an accuracy of 99% within a 1.2Hz error. The AI system significantly outperformed neurologists in detecting generalized background slowing (p = 0.02; F1: AI 0.93, neurologists 0.82) and demonstrated improved focal abnormality detection, although not statistically significant (p = 0.79; F1: AI 0.71, neurologists 0.55). Validation on both an internal dataset and the Temple University Abnormal EEG Corpus showed consistent performance (F1: 0.884 and 0.835, respectively; p = 0.66), demonstrating generalizability. The integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into power distribution systems has made microgrids foundational to grid modernization. These DERs, connected through power electronic inverters, create power electronics dominated grid architecture, introducing unique challenges for fault detection. While external line faults are widely studied, inverter faults remain a critical yet underexplored issue. This paper proposes various data mining techniques for the effective detection and localization of inverter faults-essential for preventing catastrophic grid failures. Furthermore, the difficulty of differentiating between system anomalies and internal inverter faults within Power Electronics-Driven Grids (PEDGs) is addressed. In recent years, brain-computer interfaces have made advances in decoding various motor-related tasks, including gesture recognition and movement classification, utilizing electroencephalogram (EEG) data. These developments are fundamental in exploring how neural signals can be interpreted to recognize specific physical actions. This study centers on a written alphabet classification task, where we aim to decode EEG signals associated with handwriting. To achieve this, we incorporate hand kinematics to guide the extraction of the consistent embeddings from high-dimensional neural recordings using auxiliary variables (CEBRA). These CEBRA embeddings, along with the EEG, are processed by a parallel convolutional neural network model that extracts features from both data sources simultaneously. The model classifies nine different handwritten characters, including symbols such as exclamation marks and commas, within the alphabet. We evaluate the model using a quantitative five-fold cross-validation approach and explore the structure of the embedding space through visualizations. We present a variation of the Front Tracking (FT) method for modeling solutions to hyperbolic systems in one space dimension, a Modified FT scheme. Instead of using non-entropic shocks, we approximate simple waves by jumps which exactly match the states, while approximating the wave speed. Our construction makes use of compression curve as well. We work with weak* solutions introduced in \cite{}. Consequently, we are able to analyze residuals rather than errors, and obtain cleaner convergence results. Through this paper, we intend to set up a scheme that is capable of handling strong shocks consistently. We develop this scheme primarily to prove (in a future work) existence of large amplitude solutions of the p-system. Therefore, we treat the p-system more carefully and construct a completely self-sufficient scheme, which has a limit as long as the approximate weak* solutions have uniformly bounded variation., Comment: 43 pages

Learning-augmented algorithms have been extensively studied across the computer science community in the recent years, driven by advances in machine learning predictors, which can provide additional information to augment classical algorithms. Such predictions are especially powerful in the context of online problems, where decisions have to be made without knowledge of the future, and which traditionally exhibits impossibility results bounding the performance of any online algorithm. The study of learning-augmented algorithms thus aims to use external advice prudently, to overcome classical impossibility results when the advice is accurate, and still perform comparably to the state-of-the-art online algorithms even when the advice is inaccurate. In this paper, we present learning-augmented algorithmic frameworks for two fundamental optimizations settings, extending and generalizing prior works. For online packing with concave objectives, we present a simple but overarching strategy that switches between the advice and the state-of-the-art online algorithm. For online covering with convex objectives, we greatly extend primal-dual methods for online convex covering programs by Azar et al. (FOCS 2016) and previous learning-augmented framework for online covering linear programs from the literature, to many new applications. We show that our algorithms break impossibility results when the advice is accurate, while maintaining comparable performance with state-of-the-art classical online algorithms even when the advice is erroneous., Comment: 38 pages. We present Reusable Motion prior (ReMP), an effective motion prior that can accurately track the temporal evolution of motion in various downstream tasks. Inspired by the success of foundation models, we argue that a robust spatio-temporal motion prior can encapsulate underlying 3D dynamics applicable to various sensor modalities. We learn the rich motion prior from a sequence of complete parametric models of posed human body shape. Our prior can easily estimate poses in missing frames or noisy measurements despite significant occlusion by employing a temporal attention mechanism. More interestingly, our prior can guide the system with incomplete and challenging input measurements to quickly extract critical information to estimate the sequence of poses, significantly improving the training efficiency for mesh sequence recovery. ReMP consistently outperforms the baseline method on diverse and practical 3D motion data, including depth point clouds, LiDAR scans, and IMU sensor data. Synthetic active collectives, composed of many nonliving individuals capable of cooperative changes in group shape and dynamics, hold promise for practical applications and for the elucidation of guiding principles of natural collectives. However, the design of collective robotic systems that operate effectively without intelligence or complex control at either the individual or group level is challenging. We investigate how simple steric interaction constraints between active individuals produce a versatile active system with promising functionality. Here we introduce the link-bot: a V-shape-based, single-stranded chain composed of active bots whose dynamics are defined by its geometric link constraints, allowing it to possess scale- and processing-free programmable collective behaviors. A variety of emergent properties arise from this dynamic system, including locomotion, navigation, transportation, and competitive or cooperative interactions. Through the control of a few link parameters, link-bots show rich usefulness by performing a variety of divergent tasks, including traversing or obstructing narrow spaces, passing by or enclosing objects, and propelling loads in both forward and backward directions. We report on radio follow-up observations of the nearby Type II supernova, SN 2023ixf, spanning from 1.7 to 269.9 days after the explosion, conducted using three very long baseline interferometers (VLBIs), which are the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN), the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA), and the Korean VLBI Network (KVN). In three observation epochs (152.3, 206.1, and 269.9 days), we detected emission at the 6.9 and 8.4 GHz bands, with a flux density of $\sim 5$ mJy. The flux density reached a peak at around 206.1 days, which is longer than the timescale to reach the peak observed in typical Type II supernovae. Based on the analytical model of radio emission, our late-time detections were inferred to be due to the decreasing optical depth. In this case, the mass-loss rate of the progenitor is estimated to have increased from $\sim 10^{-6} - 10^{-5}\, M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ to $\sim 10^{-4}\, M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ between 28 and 6 years before the explosion. Our radio constraints are also consistent with the mass-loss rate to produce a confined circumstellar medium proposed by previous studies, which suggest that the mass-loss rate increased from $\sim 10^{-4}\, M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ to $\gtrsim 10^{-2}\, M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ in the last few years before the explosion., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables. Omnidirectional (360-degree) video is rapidly gaining popularity due to advancements in immersive technologies like virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR). However, real-time streaming of such videos, especially in live mobile scenarios like unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), is challenged by limited bandwidth and strict latency constraints. Traditional methods, such as compression and adaptive resolution, help but often compromise video quality and introduce artifacts that degrade the viewer experience. Additionally, the unique spherical geometry of 360-degree video presents challenges not encountered in traditional 2D video. To address these issues, we initiated the 360-degree Video Super Resolution and Quality Enhancement Challenge. This competition encourages participants to develop efficient machine learning solutions to enhance the quality of low-bitrate compressed 360-degree videos, with two tracks focusing on 2x and 4x super-resolution (SR). In this paper, we outline the challenge framework, detailing the two competition tracks and highlighting the SR solutions proposed by the top-performing models. We assess these models within a unified framework, considering quality enhancement, bitrate gain, and computational efficiency. This study investigates the efficacy of Multi-Agent Systems in eliciting cross-agent communication and enhancing collective intelligence through group decision-making in a decentralized setting. Unlike centralized mechanisms, where a fixed hierarchy governs social choice, decentralized group decision-making allows agents to engage in joint deliberation. Our research focuses on the dynamics of communication and decision-making within various social choice methods. By applying different voting rules in various environments, we find that moderate decision flexibility yields better outcomes. Additionally, exploring the linguistic features of agent-to-agent conversations reveals indicators of effective collaboration, offering insights into communication patterns that facilitate or hinder collaboration. Finally, we propose various methods for determining the optimal stopping point in multi-agent collaborations based on linguistic cues. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how decentralized decision-making and group conversation shape multi-agent collaboration, with implications for the design of more effective MAS environments., Comment: preprint

From CMB polarization data alone we reconstruct the CMB lensing power spectrum, comparable in overall constraining power to previous temperature-based reconstructions, and an unlensed E-mode power spectrum. The observations, taken in 2019 and 2020 with the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and the SPT-3G camera, cover 1500 deg$^2$ at 95, 150, and 220 GHz with arcminute resolution and roughly 4.9$\mu$K-arcmin coadded noise in polarization. The power spectrum estimates, together with systematic parameter estimates and a joint covariance matrix, follow from a Bayesian analysis using the Marginal Unbiased Score Expansion (MUSE) method. The E-mode spectrum at $\ell>2000$ and lensing spectrum at $L>350$ are the most precise to date. Assuming the $\Lambda$CDM model, and using only these SPT data and priors on $\tau$ and absolute calibration from Planck, we find $H_0=66.81\pm0.81$ km/s/Mpc, comparable in precision to the Planck determination and in 5.4$\sigma$ tension with the most precise $H_0$ inference derived via the distance ladder. We also find $S_8=0.850\pm0.017$, providing further independent evidence of a slight tension with low-redshift structure probes. The $\Lambda$CDM model provides a good simultaneous fit to the combined Planck, ACT, and SPT data, and thus passes a powerful test. Combining these CMB datasets with BAO observations, we find that the effective number of neutrino species, spatial curvature, and primordial helium fraction are consistent with standard model values, and that the 95% confidence upper limit on the neutrino mass sum is 0.075 eV. The SPT data are consistent with the somewhat weak preference for excess lensing power seen in Planck and ACT data relative to predictions of the $\Lambda$CDM model. The detection of a stochastic gravitational wave background by pulsar timing arrays suggests the presence of a supermassive black hole binary population. Although the observed spectrum generally aligns with predictions from orbital evolution driven by gravitational wave emission in circular orbits, there is a discernible preference for a turnover at the lowest observed frequencies. This turnover could indicate a significant hardening phase, transitioning from early environmental influences to later stages predominantly influenced by gravitational wave emission. In the vicinity of these binaries, the ejection of stars or dark matter particles through gravitational three-body slingshots efficiently extracts orbital energy, leading to a low-frequency turnover in the spectrum. By analyzing the NANOGrav 15-year data, we assess how the gravitational wave spectrum depends on the initial inner galactic profile prior to disruption by binary ejections, accounting for a range of initial binary eccentricities. Our findings suggest a parsec-scale galactic center density around $10^6\,M_\odot/\textrm{pc}^3$ across most of the parameter space, offering insights into the environmental effects on black hole evolution and combined matter density near galaxy centers., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Extraction of hot carriers (HCs) over the band-edge is a key to harvest solar energy beyond Shockley-Queisser limit1. Graphene is known as a HC-layered material due to phonon bottleneck effect near Dirac point, but limited by low photocarrier density2. Graphene/transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures circumvent this issue by ultrafast carrier transfer from TMD to graphene2,3. Nevertheless, efficient extraction of photocurrent by means of HCs together with carrier multiplication (CM) is still missing. Here, we introduce an ultrathin broadband resonant tunneling (BRT) barrier, TiOX to efficiently extract photocurrent with simultaneous CM and HC measurements in MoS2/graphene/TiOX heterostructure. The BRT layer gives rise to boosting open circuit voltage which is linearly proportional to incident photon energy. Meanwhile, short circuit current rises rapidly over 2Eg with obvious CM feature. This was explained by defining the joint density of states between graphene and TiOX layer over positive and negative voltage. The broadband resonant tunneling states inherently constructed from oxidation states varying from Ti3+ to Ti4+ allow the ultrafast HCs to efficiently transfer from graphene to TiOX layer. We find that the number of available tunneling states is directly proportional to short circuit current, which is well corroborated with TiOX and MoS2 thickness variance. We obtained an optimum thickness of BRT layer of ~2.8 nm, yielding cascade open circuit voltage as high as ~0.7 V, two orders of magnitude higher than that without BRT layer to reach a record efficiency of 5.3% with improved fill factor owing to synergistic HC and CM conversion under 1-SUN with long-term stability.

We develop generalized Petersson/Bruggeman/Kuznetsov (PBK) formulas for specified local components at non-archimedean places. In fact, we introduce two hypotheses on non-archimedean test function pairs $f \leftrightarrow \pi(f)$, called geometric and spectral hypotheses, under which one obtains `nice' PBK formulas by the adelic relative trace function approach. Then, given a supercuspidal representation $\sigma$ of ${\rm PGL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$, we study extensively the case that $\pi(f)$ is a projection onto the line of the newform if $\pi$ is isomorphc to $\sigma$ or its unramified quadratic twist, and $\pi(f) = 0$ otherwise. As a first application, we prove an optimal large sieve inequality for families of automorphic representations that arise in our framework.

Back propagation (BP) is the default solution for gradient computation in neural network training. However, implementing BP-based training on various edge devices such as FPGA, microcontrollers (MCUs), and analog computing platforms face multiple major challenges, such as the lack of hardware resources, long time-to-market, and dramatic errors in a low-precision setting. This paper presents a simple BP-free training scheme on an MCU, which makes edge training hardware design as easy as inference hardware design. We adopt a quantized zeroth-order method to estimate the gradients of quantized model parameters, which can overcome the error of a straight-through estimator in a low-precision BP scheme. We further employ a few dimension reduction methods (e.g., node perturbation, sparse training) to improve the convergence of zeroth-order training. Experiment results show that our BP-free training achieves comparable performance as BP-based training on adapting a pre-trained image classifier to various corrupted data on resource-constrained edge devices (e.g., an MCU with 1024-KB SRAM for dense full-model training, or an MCU with 256-KB SRAM for sparse training). This method is most suitable for application scenarios where memory cost and time-to-market are the major concerns, but longer latency can be tolerated.

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) serve as the most crucial standardizable candles in cosmology, providing direct measurements of the universe's expansion history. However, it is well-known that the post-standardization brightness of SNe Ia is influenced by the properties of their host galaxies, such as mass and star formation rate, both of which are closely related to progenitor age. In this study, we reaffirm the ubiquitous and robust correlation between SN Ia luminosity and host age, showing that this host property dependence arises primarily from stellar population age of the host galaxy. This analysis was conducted using an expanded sample of over 300 hosts across a broad redshift range up to $z \sim 0.4$, ensuring sufficient statistical significance of the result. To quantify the relationship between host age and Hubble residual (HR), we employed two linear regression techniques: LINMIX, which assumes a Gaussian error, and Bayesian hierarchical linear regression, which utilizes a full posterior for the age error. Both models demonstrate a robust correlation between host age and HR, with high statistical significance approaching $5.5 \sigma$. While our new regression analyses yield the slopes that are similar or slightly shallower compared to our previous results, the significance of these slopes has notably increased. These findings robustly validate our previous suggestions that post-standardization SN Ia luminosity varies with progenitor age, which is currently not properly accounted for in SN cosmology., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables.
