Treatment selection in breast cancer is guided by molecular subtypes and clinical characteristics. Recurrence risk assessment plays a crucial role in personalizing treatment. Current methods, including genomic assays, have limited accuracy and clinical utility, leading to suboptimal decisions for many patients. We developed a test for breast cancer patient stratification based on digital pathology and clinical characteristics using novel AI methods. Specifically, we utilized a vision transformer-based pan-cancer foundation model trained with self-supervised learning to extract features from digitized H&E-stained slides. These features were integrated with clinical data to form a multi-modal AI test predicting cancer recurrence and death. The test was developed and evaluated using data from a total of 8,161 breast cancer patients across 15 cohorts originating from seven countries. Of these, 3,502 patients from five cohorts were used exclusively for evaluation, while the remaining patients were used for training. Our test accurately predicted our primary endpoint, disease-free interval, in the five external cohorts (C-index: 0.71 [0.68-0.75], HR: 3.63 [3.02-4.37, p<0.01]). In a direct comparison (N=858), the AI test was more accurate than Oncotype DX, the standard-of-care 21-gene assay, with a C-index of 0.67 [0.61-0.74] versus 0.61 [0.49-0.73], respectively. Additionally, the AI test added independent information to Oncotype DX in a multivariate analysis (HR: 3.11 [1.91-5.09, p<0.01)]). The test demonstrated robust accuracy across all major breast cancer subtypes, including TNBC (C-index: 0.71 [0.62-0.81], HR: 3.81 [2.35-6.17, p=0.02]), where no diagnostic tools are currently recommended by clinical guidelines. These results suggest that our AI test can improve accuracy, extend applicability to a wider range of patients, and enhance access to treatment selection tools.

As we enter the era of big data, collecting high-quality data is very important. However, collecting data by humans is not only very time-consuming but also expensive. Therefore, many scientists have devised various methods to collect data using computers. Among them, there is a method called web crawling, but the authors found that the crawling method has a problem in that unintended data is collected along with the user. The authors found that this can be filtered using the object recognition model YOLOv10. However, there are cases where data that is not properly filtered remains. Here, image reclassification was performed by additionally utilizing the distance output from the Siamese network, and higher performance was recorded than other classification models. The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) crossbar arrays are suitable for efficient inference computations in neural networks due to their analog general matrix-matrix multiplication (GEMM) capabilities. However, traditional ReRAM-based accelerators suffer from spatial and temporal underutilization. We present HURRY, a reconfigurable and multifunctional ReRAM-based in-situ accelerator. HURRY uses a block activation scheme for concurrent activation of dynamically sized ReRAM portions, enhancing spatial utilization. Additionally, it incorporates functional blocks for convolution, ReLU, max pooling, and softmax computations to improve temporal utilization. System-level scheduling and data mapping strategies further optimize performance. Consequently, HURRY achieves up to 3.35x speedup, 5.72x higher energy efficiency, and 7.91x greater area efficiency compared to current ReRAM-based accelerators.

Interconnection networks, or `interconnects,' play a crucial role in administering the communication among computing units of high-performance computing (HPC) systems. Efficient provisioning of interconnects minimizes the processing delay wherein computing units await information sharing between each other, thereby enhancing the overall computation efficiency. Ideally, interconnects are designed with topologies tailored to match specific workflows, requiring diverse structures for different applications. However, since modifying their structures mid-operation renders impractical, indirect communication incurs across distant units. In managing numerous long-routed data deliveries, heavy burdens on the network side may lead to the under-utilization of computing resources. In view of state-of-the-art HPC paradigms that solicit dense interconnections for diverse computation-hungry applications, this article presents a versatile wireless interconnecting framework, coined as Wireless Interconnection NEtwork (WINE). The framework exploits cutting-edge wireless technologies that promote workload adaptability and scalability of modern interconnects. Design and implementation of wirelessly reliable links are strategized under network-oriented scrutiny of HPC architectures. Digital pathology has made significant advances in tumor diagnosis and segmentation, but image variability due to differences in organs, tissue preparation, and acquisition - known as domain shift - limits the effectiveness of current algorithms. The COSAS (Cross-Organ and Cross-Scanner Adenocarcinoma Segmentation) challenge addresses this issue by improving the resilience of segmentation algorithms to domain shift, with Task 2 focusing on adenocarcinoma segmentation using a diverse dataset from six scanners, pushing the boundaries of clinical diagnostics. Our approach employs unsupervised learning through stain separation within a multi-task learning framework using a multi-decoder autoencoder. This model isolates stain matrix and stain density, allowing it to handle color variation and improve generalization across scanners. We further enhanced the robustness of the model with a mixture of stain augmentation techniques and used a U-net architecture for segmentation. The novelty of our method lies in the use of stain separation within a multi-task learning framework, which effectively disentangles histological structures from color variations. This approach shows promise for improving segmentation accuracy and generalization across different histopathological stains, paving the way for more reliable diagnostic tools in digital pathology.

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has emerged as an essential material for the encapsulation layer in van der Waals heterostructures and efficient deep ultra-violet optoelectronics. This is primarily due to its remarkable physical properties and ultrawide bandgap (close to 6 eV, and even larger in some cases) properties. Color centers in hBN refer to intrinsic vacancies and extrinsic impurities within the 2D crystal lattice, which result in distinct optical properties in the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (IR) range. Furthermore, each color center in hBN exhibits a unique emission spectrum and possesses various spin properties. These characteristics open up possibilities for the development of next-generation optoelectronics and quantum information applications, including room-temperature single-photon sources and quantum sensors. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the atomic configuration, optical and quantum properties, and different techniques employed for the formation of color centers in hBN. A deep understanding of color centers in hBN allows for advances in the development of next-generation UV optoelectronic applications, solid-state quantum technologies, and nanophotonics by harnessing the exceptional capabilities offered by hBN color centers.

Social problems stemming from the shortage of radiologists are intensifying, and artificial intelligence is being highlighted as a potential solution. Recently emerging large-scale generative AI has expanded from large language models (LLMs) to multi-modal models, showing potential to revolutionize the entire process of medical imaging. However, comprehensive reviews on their development status and future challenges are currently lacking. This scoping review systematically organizes existing literature on the clinical value of large-scale generative AI applications by following PCC guidelines. A systematic search was conducted across four databases: PubMed, EMbase, IEEE-Xplore, and Google Scholar, and 15 studies meeting the inclusion/exclusion criteria set by the researchers were reviewed. Most of these studies focused on improving the efficiency of report generation in specific parts of the interpretation process or on translating reports to aid patient understanding, with the latest studies extending to AI applications performing direct interpretations. All studies were quantitatively evaluated by clinicians, with most utilizing LLMs and only three employing multi-modal models. Both LLMs and multi-modal models showed excellent results in specific areas, but none yet outperformed radiologists in diagnostic performance. Most studies utilized GPT, with few using models specialized for the medical imaging domain. We consider the statistics of the results of a measurement of the spreading operator in the Krylov basis generated by the Hamiltonian of a quantum system starting from a specified initial pure state. We first obtain the probability distribution of the results of measurements of this spreading operator at a certain instant of time, and compute the characteristic function of this distribution. We show that the moments of this characteristic function are related to the so-called generalised spread complexities, and obtain expressions for them in several cases when the Hamiltonian is an element of a Lie algebra. Furthermore, by considering a continuum limit of the Krylov basis, we show that the generalised spread complexities of higher orders have a peak in the time evolution for a random matrix Hamiltonian belonging to the Gaussian unitary ensemble. We also obtain an upper bound in the change in generalised spread complexity at an arbitrary time in terms of the operator norm of the Hamiltonian and discuss the significance of these results.

Pandharipande-Thomas theory and Donaldson-Thomas theory (PT and DT) are two branches of enumerative geometry in which particular generating functions arise that count plane-partition-like objects. This study investigates the sleep characteristics and brain activity of individuals in the gray zone of insomnia, a population that experiences sleep disturbances yet does not fully meet the clinical criteria for chronic insomnia. Thirteen healthy participants and thirteen individuals from the gray zone were assessed using polysomnography and electroencephalogram to analyze both sleep architecture and neural activity. Although no significant differences in objective sleep quality or structure were found between the groups, gray zone individuals reported higher insomnia severity index scores, indicating subjective sleep difficulties. Electroencephalogram analysis revealed increased delta and alpha activity during the wake stage, suggesting lingering sleep inertia, while non-rapid eye movement stages 1 and 2 exhibited elevated beta and gamma activity, often associated with chronic insomnia. However, these high-frequency patterns were not observed in non-rapid eye movement stage 3 or rapid eye movement sleep, suggesting less severe disruptions compared to chronic insomnia. Electroencephalography (EEG) plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of various neurological disorders. However, small hospitals and clinics often lack advanced EEG signal analysis systems and are prone to misinterpretation in manual EEG reading. This study proposes an innovative hybrid artificial intelligence (AI) system for automatic interpretation of EEG background activity and report generation. The system combines deep learning models for posterior dominant rhythm (PDR) prediction, unsupervised artifact removal, and expert-designed algorithms for abnormality detection. For PDR prediction, 1530 labeled EEGs were used, and the best ensemble model achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.237, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.359, an accuracy of 91.8% within a 0.6Hz error, and an accuracy of 99% within a 1.2Hz error. The AI system significantly outperformed neurologists in detecting generalized background slowing (p = 0.02; F1: AI 0.93, neurologists 0.82) and demonstrated improved focal abnormality detection, although not statistically significant (p = 0.79; F1: AI 0.71, neurologists 0.55). Validation on both an internal dataset and the Temple University Abnormal EEG Corpus showed consistent performance (F1: 0.884 and 0.835, respectively; p = 0.66), demonstrating generalizability. The integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into power distribution systems has made microgrids foundational to grid modernization. These DERs, connected through power electronic inverters, create power electronics dominated grid architecture, introducing unique challenges for fault detection. While external line faults are widely studied, inverter faults remain a critical yet underexplored issue. This paper proposes various data mining techniques for the effective detection and localization of inverter faults-essential for preventing catastrophic grid failures. Furthermore, the difficulty of differentiating between system anomalies and internal inverter faults within Power Electronics-Driven Grids (PEDGs) is addressed. To enhance grid resilience, this work applies advanced artificial intelligence methods to distinguish anomalies from true internal faults, identifying the specific malfunctioning switch. In recent years, brain-computer interfaces have made advances in decoding various motor-related tasks, including gesture recognition and movement classification, utilizing electroencephalogram (EEG) data. These developments are fundamental in exploring how neural signals can be interpreted to recognize specific physical actions. This study centers on a written alphabet classification task, where we aim to decode EEG signals associated with handwriting. To achieve this, we incorporate hand kinematics to guide the extraction of the consistent embeddings from high-dimensional neural recordings using auxiliary variables (CEBRA). These CEBRA embeddings, along with the EEG, are processed by a parallel convolutional neural network model that extracts features from both data sources simultaneously. The model classifies nine different handwritten characters, including symbols such as exclamation marks and commas, within the alphabet. We evaluate the model using a quantitative five-fold cross-validation approach and explore the structure of the embedding space through visualizations. We present a variation of the Front Tracking (FT) method for modeling solutions to hyperbolic systems in one space dimension, a Modified FT scheme. Instead of using non-entropic shocks, we approximate simple waves by jumps which exactly match the states, while approximating the wave speed. Our construction makes use of compression curve as well. We work with weak* solutions introduced in \cite{}. Consequently, we are able to analyze residuals rather than errors, and obtain cleaner convergence results. Through this paper, we intend to set up a scheme that is capable of handling strong shocks consistently. We develop this scheme primarily to prove (in a future work) existence of large amplitude solutions of the p-system. Learning-augmented algorithms have been extensively studied across the computer science community in the recent years, driven by advances in machine learning predictors, which can provide additional information to augment classical algorithms. Such predictions are especially powerful in the context of online problems, where decisions have to be made without knowledge of the future, and which traditionally exhibits impossibility results bounding the performance of any online algorithm. The study of learning-augmented algorithms thus aims to use external advice prudently, to overcome classical impossibility results when the advice is accurate, and still perform comparably to the state-of-the-art online algorithms even when the advice is inaccurate. In this paper, we present learning-augmented algorithmic frameworks for two fundamental optimizations settings, extending and generalizing prior works. For online packing with concave objectives, we present a simple but overarching strategy that switches between the advice and the state-of-the-art online algorithm. For online covering with convex objectives, we greatly extend primal-dual methods for online convex covering programs by Azar et al. (FOCS 2016) and previous learning-augmented framework for online covering linear programs from the literature, to many new applications. We show that our algorithms break impossibility results when the advice is accurate, while maintaining comparable performance with state-of-the-art classical online algorithms even when the advice is erroneous., Comment: 38 pages. We present Reusable Motion prior (ReMP), an effective motion prior that can accurately track the temporal evolution of motion in various downstream tasks. Inspired by the success of foundation models, we argue that a robust spatio-temporal motion prior can encapsulate underlying 3D dynamics applicable to various sensor modalities. We learn the rich motion prior from a sequence of complete parametric models of posed human body shape. Our prior can easily estimate poses in missing frames or noisy measurements despite significant occlusion by employing a temporal attention mechanism. More interestingly, our prior can guide the system with incomplete and challenging input measurements to quickly extract critical information to estimate the sequence of poses, significantly improving the training efficiency for mesh sequence recovery. ReMP consistently outperforms the baseline method on diverse and practical 3D motion data, including depth point clouds, LiDAR scans, and IMU sensor data. Synthetic active collectives, composed of many nonliving individuals capable of cooperative changes in group shape and dynamics, hold promise for practical applications and for the elucidation of guiding principles of natural collectives. However, the design of collective robotic systems that operate effectively without intelligence or complex control at either the individual or group level is challenging. We investigate how simple steric interaction constraints between active individuals produce a versatile active system with promising functionality. Here we introduce the link-bot: a V-shape-based, single-stranded chain composed of active bots whose dynamics are defined by its geometric link constraints, allowing it to possess scale- and processing-free programmable collective behaviors. A variety of emergent properties arise from this dynamic system, including locomotion, navigation, transportation, and competitive or cooperative interactions. Through the control of a few link parameters, link-bots show rich usefulness by performing a variety of divergent tasks, including traversing or obstructing narrow spaces, passing by or enclosing objects, and propelling loads in both forward and backward directions. We report on radio follow-up observations of the nearby Type II supernova, SN 2023ixf, spanning from 1.7 to 269.9 days after the explosion, conducted using three very long baseline interferometers (VLBIs), which are the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN), the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA), and the Korean VLBI Network (KVN). In three observation epochs (152.3, 206.1, and 269.9 days), we detected emission at the 6.9 and 8.4 GHz bands, with a flux density of $\sim 5$ mJy. The flux density reached a peak at around 206.1 days, which is longer than the timescale to reach the peak observed in typical Type II supernovae. Based on the analytical model of radio emission, our late-time detections were inferred to be due to the decreasing optical depth. In this case, the mass-loss rate of the progenitor is estimated to have increased from $\sim 10^{-6} - 10^{-5}\, M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ to $\sim 10^{-4}\, M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ between 28 and 6 years before the explosion. Our radio constraints are also consistent with the mass-loss rate to produce a confined circumstellar medium proposed by previous studies, which suggest that the mass-loss rate increased from $\sim 10^{-4}\, M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ to $\gtrsim 10^{-2}\, M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr^{-1}}$ in the last few years before the explosion., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables. Omnidirectional (360-degree) video is rapidly gaining popularity due to advancements in immersive technologies like virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR). However, real-time streaming of such videos, especially in live mobile scenarios like unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), is challenged by limited bandwidth and strict latency constraints. Traditional methods, such as compression and adaptive resolution, help but often compromise video quality and introduce artifacts that degrade the viewer experience. Additionally, the unique spherical geometry of 360-degree video presents challenges not encountered in traditional 2D video. To address these issues, we initiated the 360-degree Video Super Resolution and Quality Enhancement Challenge. This competition encourages participants to develop efficient machine learning solutions to enhance the quality of low-bitrate compressed 360-degree videos, with two tracks focusing on 2x and 4x super-resolution (SR). In this paper, we outline the challenge framework, detailing the two competition tracks and highlighting the SR solutions proposed by the top-performing models. We assess these models within a unified framework, considering quality enhancement, bitrate gain, and computational efficiency. This study investigates the efficacy of Multi-Agent Systems in eliciting cross-agent communication and enhancing collective intelligence through group decision-making in a decentralized setting. Unlike centralized mechanisms, where a fixed hierarchy governs social choice, decentralized group decision-making allows agents to engage in joint deliberation. Our research focuses on the dynamics of communication and decision-making within various social choice methods. By applying different voting rules in various environments, we find that moderate decision flexibility yields better outcomes. Additionally, exploring the linguistic features of agent-to-agent conversations reveals indicators of effective collaboration, offering insights into communication patterns that facilitate or hinder collaboration. Finally, we propose various methods for determining the optimal stopping point in multi-agent collaborations based on linguistic cues. From CMB polarization data alone we reconstruct the CMB lensing power spectrum, comparable in overall constraining power to previous temperature-based reconstructions, and an unlensed E-mode power spectrum. The observations, taken in 2019 and 2020 with the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and the SPT-3G camera, cover 1500 deg$^2$ at 95, 150, and 220 GHz with arcminute resolution and roughly 4.9$\mu$K-arcmin coadded noise in polarization. The power spectrum estimates, together with systematic parameter estimates and a joint covariance matrix, follow from a Bayesian analysis using the Marginal Unbiased Score Expansion (MUSE) method. The E-mode spectrum at $\ell>2000$ and lensing spectrum at $L>350$ are the most precise to date. Assuming the $\Lambda$CDM model, and using only these SPT data and priors on $\tau$ and absolute calibration from Planck, we find $H_0=66.81\pm0.81$ km/s/Mpc, comparable in precision to the Planck determination and in 5.4$\sigma$ tension with the most precise $H_0$ inference derived via the distance ladder. We also find $S_8=0.850\pm0.017$, providing further independent evidence of a slight tension with low-redshift structure probes. The $\Lambda$CDM model provides a good simultaneous fit to the combined Planck, ACT, and SPT data, and thus passes a powerful test. Combining these CMB datasets with BAO observations, we find that the effective number of neutrino species, spatial curvature, and primordial helium fraction are consistent with standard model values, and that the 95% confidence upper limit on the neutrino mass sum is 0.075 eV. The SPT data are consistent with the somewhat weak preference for excess lensing power seen in Planck and ACT data relative to predictions of the $\Lambda$CDM model. The detection of a stochastic gravitational wave background by pulsar timing arrays suggests the presence of a supermassive black hole binary population. Although the observed spectrum generally aligns with predictions from orbital evolution driven by gravitational wave emission in circular orbits, there is a discernible preference for a turnover at the lowest observed frequencies. This turnover could indicate a significant hardening phase, transitioning from early environmental influences to later stages predominantly influenced by gravitational wave emission. In the vicinity of these binaries, the ejection of stars or dark matter particles through gravitational three-body slingshots efficiently extracts orbital energy, leading to a low-frequency turnover in the spectrum. By analyzing the NANOGrav 15-year data, we assess how the gravitational wave spectrum depends on the initial inner galactic profile prior to disruption by binary ejections, accounting for a range of initial binary eccentricities. Our findings suggest a parsec-scale galactic center density around $10^6\,M_\odot/\textrm{pc}^3$ across most of the parameter space, offering insights into the environmental effects on black hole evolution and combined matter density near galaxy centers., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Graphene is known as a HC-layered material due to phonon bottleneck effect near Dirac point, but limited by low photocarrier density2. Graphene/transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures circumvent this issue by ultrafast carrier transfer from TMD to graphene2,3. Nevertheless, efficient extraction of photocurrent by means of HCs together with carrier multiplication (CM) is still missing. Here, we introduce an ultrathin broadband resonant tunneling (BRT) barrier, TiOX to efficiently extract photocurrent with simultaneous CM and HC measurements in MoS2/graphene/TiOX heterostructure. The BRT layer gives rise to boosting open circuit voltage which is linearly proportional to incident photon energy. Meanwhile, short circuit current rises rapidly over 2Eg with obvious CM feature. This was explained by defining the joint density of states between graphene and TiOX layer over positive and negative voltage. The broadband resonant tunneling states inherently constructed from oxidation states varying from Ti3+ to Ti4+ allow the ultrafast HCs to efficiently transfer from graphene to TiOX layer. We find that the number of available tunneling states is directly proportional to short circuit current, which is well corroborated with TiOX and MoS2 thickness variance. We obtained an optimum thickness of BRT layer of ~2.8 nm, yielding cascade open circuit voltage as high as ~0.7 V, two orders of magnitude higher than that without BRT layer to reach a record efficiency of 5.3% with improved fill factor owing to synergistic HC and CM conversion under 1-SUN with long-term stability.

We develop generalized Petersson/Bruggeman/Kuznetsov (PBK) formulas for specified local components at non-archimedean places. In fact, we introduce two hypotheses on non-archimedean test function pairs $f \leftrightarrow \pi(f)$, called geometric and spectral hypotheses, under which one obtains `nice' PBK formulas by the adelic relative trace function approach. Then, given a supercuspidal representation $\sigma$ of ${\rm PGL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$, we study extensively the case that $\pi(f)$ is a projection onto the line of the newform if $\pi$ is isomorphc to $\sigma$ or its unramified quadratic twist, and $\pi(f) = 0$ otherwise. As a first application, we prove an optimal large sieve inequality for families of automorphic representations that arise in our framework.

Back propagation (BP) is the default solution for gradient computation in neural network training. However, implementing BP-based training on various edge devices such as FPGA, microcontrollers (MCUs), and analog computing platforms face multiple major challenges, such as the lack of hardware resources, long time-to-market, and dramatic errors in a low-precision setting. This paper presents a simple BP-free training scheme on an MCU, which makes edge training hardware design as easy as inference hardware design. We adopt a quantized zeroth-order method to estimate the gradients of quantized model parameters, which can overcome the error of a straight-through estimator in a low-precision BP scheme. We further employ a few dimension reduction methods (e.g., node perturbation, sparse training) to improve the convergence of zeroth-order training. Experiment results show that our BP-free training achieves comparable performance as BP-based training on adapting a pre-trained image classifier to various corrupted data on resource-constrained edge devices (e.g., an MCU with 1024-KB SRAM for dense full-model training, or an MCU with 256-KB SRAM for sparse training). This method is most suitable for application scenarios where memory cost and time-to-market are the major concerns, but longer latency can be tolerated.

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) serve as the most crucial standardizable candles in cosmology, providing direct measurements of the universe's expansion history. However, it is well-known that the post-standardization brightness of SNe Ia is influenced by the properties of their host galaxies, such as mass and star formation rate, both of which are closely related to progenitor age. In this study, we reaffirm the ubiquitous and robust correlation between SN Ia luminosity and host age, showing that this host property dependence arises primarily from stellar population age of the host galaxy. This analysis was conducted using an expanded sample of over 300 hosts across a broad redshift range up to $z \sim 0.4$, ensuring sufficient statistical significance of the result. To quantify the relationship between host age and Hubble residual (HR), we employed two linear regression techniques: LINMIX, which assumes a Gaussian error, and Bayesian hierarchical linear regression, which utilizes a full posterior for the age error. Both models demonstrate a robust correlation between host age and HR, with high statistical significance approaching $5.5 \sigma$. While our new regression analyses yield the slopes that are similar or slightly shallower compared to our previous results, the significance of these slopes has notably increased. These findings robustly validate our previous suggestions that post-standardization SN Ia luminosity varies with progenitor age, which is currently not properly accounted for in SN cosmology., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables. A 3D chaos game is shown to be a useful way for encoding DNA sequences. Since matching subsequences in DNA converge in space in 3D chaos game encoding, a DNA sequence's 3D chaos game representation can be used to compare DNA sequences without prior alignment and without truncating or padding any of the sequences. Two proposed methods inspired by shape-similarity comparison techniques show that this form of encoding can perform as well as alignment-based techniques for building phylogenetic trees. The first method uses the volume overlap of intersecting spheres and the second uses shape signatures by summarizing the coordinates, oriented angles, and oriented distances of the 3D chaos game trajectory. The methods are tested using: (1) the first exon of the beta-globin gene for 11 species, (2) mitochondrial DNA from four groups of primates, and (3) a set of synthetic DNA sequences. Simulations show that the proposed methods produce distances that reflect the number of mutation events; additionally, on average, distances resulting from deletion mutations are comparable to those produced by substitution mutations.

We present a novel OCR-free document understanding framework based on pretrained Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs). Our approach employs multi-scale visual features to effectively handle various font sizes within document images. To address the increasing costs of considering the multi-scale visual inputs for MLLMs, we propose the Hierarchical Visual Feature Aggregation (HVFA) module, designed to reduce the number of input tokens to LLMs. Leveraging a feature pyramid with cross-attentive pooling, our approach effectively manages the trade-off between information loss and efficiency without being affected by varying document image sizes. Furthermore, we introduce a novel instruction tuning task, which facilitates the model's text-reading capability by learning to predict the relative positions of input text, eventually minimizing the risk of truncated text caused by the limited capacity of LLMs. Comprehensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our approach, demonstrating superior performance in various document understanding tasks., Comment: NeurIPS 2024

To increase social bonding with interlocutors, humans naturally acquire the ability to respond appropriately in a given situation by considering which conversational skill is most suitable for the response - a process we call skill-of-mind. For large language model (LLM)-based conversational agents, planning appropriate conversational skills, as humans do, is challenging due to the complexity of social dialogue, especially in interactive scenarios. To address this, we propose a skill-of-mind-annotated conversation dataset, named Multifaceted Skill-of-Mind, which includes multi-turn and multifaceted conversational skills across various interactive scenarios (e.g., long-term, counseling, task-oriented), grounded in diverse social contexts (e.g., demographics, persona, rules of thumb). This dataset consists of roughly 100K conversations. Using this dataset, we introduce a new family of skill-of-mind-infused LLMs, named Thanos, with model sizes of 1B, 3B, and 8B parameters. With extensive experiments, these models successfully demonstrate the skill-of-mind process and exhibit strong generalizability in inferring multifaceted skills across a variety of domains. Deep learning models generally display catastrophic forgetting when learning new data continuously. Many incremental learning approaches address this problem by reusing data from previous tasks while learning new tasks. However, the direct access to past data generates privacy and security concerns. To address these issues, we present a novel method that preserves previous knowledge without storing previous data. This method is inspired by the architecture of a vision transformer and employs a unique token capable of encapsulating the compressed knowledge of each task. This approach generates task-specific embeddings by directing attention differently based on the task associated with the data, thereby effectively mimicking the impact of having multiple models through tokens. Our method incorporates a distillation process that ensures efficient interactions even after multiple additional learning steps, thereby optimizing the model against forgetting. We measured the performance of our model in terms of accuracy and backward transfer using a benchmark dataset for different task-incremental learning scenarios. Our results demonstrate the superiority of our approach, which achieved the highest accuracy and lowest backward transfer among the compared methods. In addition to presenting a new model, our approach lays the foundation for various extensions within the spectrum of vision-transformer architectures.

Skyrmions, topologically stable magnetic solitons characterized by whirling magnetization in nanoscale magnetic elements, show promise information carriers in spintronics and spin-based quantum computing due to their unique properties: small size, stability, and controllability. In this study, we introduce a novel method of skyrmion generation through domain wall deformation dynamics. Our analytical and micromagnetic simulations demonstrate that domain wall motion exceeding the Walker threshold induces topological deformation of magnetic domain walls exhibiting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This deformation process catalyzes the emergence of skyrmions from magnetic domain wall structure distortion, specifically through the Anchoring of domain walls due to the vertical Bloch line. We elucidate the underlying mechanism of skyrmion generation, correlating it with topological transitions accompanied by burst energy dissipation through spin-wave radiation. Notably, we present robust skyrmion generation conditions through a comprehensive classification of domain wall distortion, including vertical Bloch line generation and annihilation in magnetic domain wall dynamics within a DMI system. These findings provide noble insights into topological behaviors of spin structures and offer a potential pathway for efficient, controlled skyrmion creation in the next-generation spintronic devices., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the interplay between self-duality and spatially modulated symmetry of generalized $N$-state clock models, which include the transverse-field Ising model and ordinary $N$-state clock models as special cases. The spatially modulated symmetry of the model becomes trivial when the model's parameters satisfy a specific number-theoretic relation. We find that the duality is non-invertible when the spatially modulated symmetry remains nontrivial, and show that this non-invertibility is resolved by introducing a generalized $\mathbb{Z}_N$ toric code, which manifests ultraviolet/infrared mixing, as the bulk topological order. In this framework, the boundary duality transformation corresponds to the boundary action of a bulk symmetry transformation, with the endpoint of the bulk symmetry defect realizing the boundary duality defect. We show a linear sized reduction from the Maximum Cut Problem (Max-Cut) with completeness $1 - \varepsilon$ and soundness $1 - \varepsilon^{1/2}$ to the $\gamma$-Approximate Closest Vector Problem under any finite $\ell_p$-norm including $p = 2$. This reduction implies two headline results: (i) We show that any sub-exponential time (classical or quantum) algorithm for the $o(\sqrt{\log n}^{\frac{1}{p}})$-Approximate Closest Vector Problem in any finite $\ell_p$-norm implies a faster than the state-of-the-art (by Arora, Barak, and Steurer [\textit{Journal of the ACM}, 2015]) sub-exponential time (classical or quantum) algorithm for Max-Cut. This fills the gap between the results by Bennett, Golovnev, and Stephens-Davidowitz [\textit{FOCS} 2017] which had an almost optimal runtime lower bound but a very small approximation factor and the results by Dinur, Kindler, Raz, and Safra [\textit{Combinatorica}, 2003] which had an almost optimal approximation factor but small runtime lower bound, albeit using a different underlying hard problem; (ii) in combination with the classical results of Aggarwal and Kumar [\textit{FOCS} 2023] and our quantization of those results, there are no fine-grained reductions from $k$-SAT to Max-Cut with one-sided error, nor are there non-adaptive fine-grained (classical or quantum) reductions with two-sided error, unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses (or unless $\mathrm{NP} \subseteq \mathrm{pr} \text{-} \mathrm{QSZK}$ in the quantum case). Solar energetic particle (SEP) events are associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and/or solar flares. SEPs travel through the corona and interplanetary space to reach Earth, posing a radiation hazard to spacecraft and astronauts working in space and the electronics on spacecraft. Due to the distinct magnetic field configuration and solar eruption kinematic properties associated with each event, the utilization of a data-driven model becomes essential for predicting SEP hazards. In this study, we use a developed model that utilizes photospheric magnetic field measurements and CME shock observations as inputs to simulate several historical SEP events associated with fast CME speeds (>700 km/s). The model includes an SEP source term aligned with the theory of diffusive shock acceleration by the CME shock. The performance of the model is accessed by comparing simulations and observations of SEP intensity time profiles at SOHO, ACE, STEREO-A and STEREO-B. The results generally matched observations well, particularly for protons below 40.0 MeV. However, discrepancies arose for higher-energy protons, notably for the events on 2011 March 7 and 2014 February 25, where the simulation tended to overestimate the proton flux . At STEREO-A, the modeled proton intensities for the SEP events on 2013 April 11 and 2011 March 7 display a very different behavior compared to observations because of the efficient transport in longitude caused by the weak magnetic field., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures

Quantum resources like entanglement and magic are essential for characterizing the complexity of quantum states. However, when the number of copies of quantum states and the computational time are limited by numbers polynomial in the system size $n$, accurate estimation of the amount of these resources becomes difficult. This makes it impossible to distinguish between ensembles of states with relatively small resources and one that has nearly maximal resources. Such ensembles with small resources are referred to as "pseudo-quantum" ensembles. Recent studies have introduced an ensemble known as the random subset phase state ensemble, which is pseudo-entangled, pseudo-magical, and pseudorandom. While the current state-of-the-art implementation of this ensemble is conjectured to be realized by a circuit with $O(nt)$ depth, it is still too deep for near-term quantum devices to execute for small $t$. In addition, the strict linear dependence on $t$ has only been established as a lower bound on the circuit depth. In this work, we present significantly improved implementations that only require $\omega(\log n)\cdot O(t[\log t]^2)$ depth circuits, which almost saturates the theoretical lower bound. This is also the fastest known for generating pseudorandom states to the best of our knowledge. We believe that our findings will facilitate the implementation of pseudo-ensembles on near-term devices, allowing executions of tasks that would otherwise require ensembles with maximal quantum resources, by generating pseudo-ensembles at a super-polynomially fewer number of entangling and non-Clifford gates., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

The detection of satellite thermal emission at millimeter wavelengths is presented using data from the 3rd-Generation receiver on the South Pole Telescope (SPT-3G). This represents the first reported detection of thermal emission from artificial satellites at millimeter wavelengths. Satellite thermal emission is shown to be detectable at high signal-to-noise on timescales as short as a few tens of milliseconds. An algorithm for downloading orbital information and tracking known satellites given observer constraints and time-ordered observatory pointing is described. Consequences for cosmological surveys and short-duration transient searches are discussed, revealing that the integrated thermal emission from all large satellites does not contribute significantly to the SPT-3G survey intensity map. Measured satellite positions are found to be discrepant from their two-line element (TLE) derived ephemerides up to several arcminutes which may present a difficulty in cross-checking or masking satellites from short-duration transient searches.

We present 850 $\mu$m polarization observations of the IC 348 star-forming region in the Perseus molecular cloud as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observation (BISTRO) survey. We study the magnetic properties of two cores (HH 211 MMS and IC 348 MMS) and a filamentary structure of IC 348. We find that the overall field tends to be more perpendicular than parallel to the filamentary structure of the region. The polarization fraction decreases with intensity, and we estimate the trend by power-law and the mean of the Rice distribution fittings. The power indices for the cores are much smaller than 1, indicative of possible grain growth to micron size in the cores. We also measure the magnetic field strengths of the two cores and the filamentary area separately by applying the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and its alternative version for compressed medium. The estimated mass-to-flux ratios are 0.45-2.20 and 0.63-2.76 for HH 211 MMS and IC 348 MMS, respectively, while the ratios for the filament is 0.33-1.50. This result may suggest that the transition from subcritical to supercritical conditions occurs at the core scale ($\sim$ 0.05 pc) in the region. In addition, we study the energy balance of the cores and find that the relative strength of turbulence to the magnetic field tends to be stronger for IC 348 MMS than HH 211 MMS. The result could potentially explain the different configurations inside the two cores: a single protostellar system in HH 211 MMS and multiple protostars in IC 348 MMS., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 21 pages, 12 figures

The center-to-limb variations (CLV) of transition region line Gaussian fit parameters in solar plage are reported for the first time. The Si iv 1402.77 A line observed by Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) is used. The spectral intensity increases linearly from the disk center to the solar limb. Similarly, the non-thermal velocity also increases linearly from 23.6 km/s (at the disk center) to 30.9 km/s (at the solar limb). On the other hand, the Doppler velocity decreases from 8.9$\pm$1.0 km/s at the disk center to 0.0 km/s at the limb. This CLV pattern in solar plages is consistent with the CLV pattern reported in the quiet-Sun (QS). However, the average values of the parameters in the solar plage are significantly higher than in the QS. The intensity and non-thermal velocity increase linearly with the magnetic field at the disk center while the Doppler velocity does not depend on the magnetic field. Due to the line-of-sight effect, the plasma column depth increases towards the solar limb which leads to a linear increase in the spectral intensity. Further, the increasing plasma column depth towards the solar limb adds more and more unresolved motions, and as a result, the non-thermal velocity increases from the disk center to the solar limb. Localization is one of the most crucial tasks for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle systems (UAVs) directly impacting overall performance, which can be achieved with various sensors and applied to numerous tasks related to search and rescue operations, object tracking, construction, etc. However, due to the negative effects of challenging environments, UAVs may lose signals for localization. In this paper, we present an effective path-planning system leveraging semantic segmentation information to navigate around texture-less and problematic areas like lakes, oceans, and high-rise buildings using a monocular camera. We introduce a real-time semantic segmentation architecture and a novel keyframe decision pipeline to optimize image inputs based on pixel distribution, reducing processing time. A hierarchical planner based on the Dynamic Window Approach (DWA) algorithm, integrated with a cost map, is designed to facilitate efficient path planning. The system is implemented in a photo-realistic simulation environment using Unity, aligning with segmentation model parameters. Navigating safely in dynamic human environments is crucial for mobile service robots, and social navigation is a key aspect of this process. In this paper, we proposed an integrative approach that combines motion prediction and trajectory planning to enable safe and socially-aware robot navigation. The main idea of the proposed method is to leverage the advantages of Socially Acceptable trajectory prediction and Timed Elastic Band (TEB) by incorporating human interactive information including position, orientation, and motion into the objective function of the TEB algorithms. In addition, we designed social constraints to ensure the safety of robot navigation. The proposed system is evaluated through physical simulation using both quantitative and qualitative metrics, demonstrating its superior performance in avoiding human and dynamic obstacles, thereby ensuring safe navigation. In molecular systems, the ultrafast motion of electrons initiates the process of chemical change. Tracking this electronic motion across molecules requires coupling attosecond time resolution to atomic-scale spatial sensitivity. In this work, we employ a pair of attosecond x-ray pulses from an x-ray free-electron laser to follow electron motion resulting from the sudden removal of an electron from a prototypical aromatic system, para-aminophenol. X-ray absorption enables tracking this motion with atomic-site specificity. Our measurements are compared with state-of-the-art computational modeling, reproducing the observed response across multiple timescales. Sub-femtosecond dynamics are assigned to states undergoing non-radiative decay, while few-femtosecond oscillatory motion is associated with electronic wavepacket motion in stable cation states, that will eventually couple to nuclear motion. Our work provides insight on the ultrafast charge motion preceding and initiating chemical transformations in moderately complex systems, and provides a powerful benchmark for computational models of ultrafast charge motion in matter.
