Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae; red imported fire ant) is an invasive species in several parts of the world. A major contributor to the spread of S. invicta is infested shipping containers. The vapor of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), a naturally occurring organosulfur compound, is highly toxic to S. invicta; however, AITC is highly volatile. Microencapsulation of AITC in polyethylene (PE) resin slows the release of AITC, making it a potentially useful material for preventing S. invicta infestations. Here, we examined the efficacy of AITC microencapsulated in PE (mAITC) as a repellent against S. invicta infestation of cardboard boxes, a common containerized cargo. Using baited cardboard boxes, we found that the number of S. invicta individuals entering boxes containing an mAITC sheet was significantly less than that entering boxes without an mAITC sheet. When a PE cover, which is often used to protect carboard boxes during shipping, was used, vapor concentrations of AITC inside the boxes were increased and the number of S. invicta individuals entering the boxes was reduced almost to zero. These findings indicate that mAITC sheeting, especially in combination with a PE cover, is a promising material for the protection of containerized cardboard-box cargo against S. invicta infestation.

We report an experimental setup for simultaneously measuring specific heat and thermal conductivity in feedback-controlled pulsed magnetic fields of 50 msec duration at cryogenic temperatures. A stabilized magnetic field pulse obtained by the feedback control, which dramatically improves the thermal stability of the setup and sample, is used in combination with the flash method to obtain absolute values of thermal properties up to 37.2 T in the 2 K to 16 K temperature range. We describe the experimental setup and demonstrate the performance of the present method with measurements on single crystal samples of the geometrically frustrated quantum spin-dimer system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. Our proof-of-principle results show excellent agreement with data taken using a standard steady-state method, confirming the validity and convenience of the present approach., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), which are among the most harmful alien ants, were first detected in Japan in a shipping container from China in May 2017, and continue to enter Japan via this trade pathway. Fumigation is one of the most effective ways to eliminate S. invicta from goods transported in containers. The present study is the first to evaluate the effect of fumigation with allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) against S. invicta. Fumigation using microencapsulated AITC pellets in a gas-barrier bag for 24 h completely killed S. invicta. Furthermore, our fumigation system was able to maintain a high concentration of AITC vapor for at least 13 days. AITC, a naturally occurring compound in wasabi [Eutrema japonicum (Miq.) Koidz], has been demonstrated to be safe for humans and the environment, but its use as a fumigant is limited by its strong volatility and pungency. However, its encapsulation solves this problem by allowing controlled vapor release. Thus, the use of microencapsulated AITC in combination with a gas-barrier bag has considerable potential to provide an effective and easy-to-use protocol for fumigation of S. invicta.

Background Coronary artery evaluation by virtual histological intravascular ultrasonography (VH-IVUS) late in Kawasaki disease (KD) shows intimal thickening, calcification, fatty components, and necrosis of regressed coronary artery lesions (CALs). However, it is not clear when these VH-IVUS findings start to occur. Therefore, we evaluated coronary arteries using VH-IVUS in patients with early-stage KD and tried to determine whether these atherosclerotic findings on VH-IVUS were different from that in patients with late-stage KD. Methods Eighteen patients with KD aged between 1 and 32 years who had CALs and underwent cardiac catheterization between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2014 were included. They were divided into 2 groups—those with the disease for 10 years (group B). VH-IVUS findings were compared between the groups. The coronary arteries were divided based on coronary angiography findings into normal, regressed (dilated CALs regressed to a normal size), and aneurysmal lesions. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used in the statistical analysis. Results In both regressed and aneurysmal lesions, marked intimal proliferation and atherosclerotic findings (fibro-fatty and necrotic core lesions) were observed. In addition, there was no difference in the area percentage of atherosclerosis between the groups. Conclusions VH-IVUS revealed that atherosclerotic-like findings exist in CALs in patients with KD, even within a year of onset. The findings were almost the same in those with the disease for >10 years. Because there is no histological evidence of atherosclerosis in KD, these VH-IVUS findings may indicate complex histological findings of KD. Nevertheless, early interventions to help reduce the risk factors of atherosclerosis may be required in these patients.

Ants are tiny creatures that are often overlooked in our everyday lives. Yet, there are more than 15.000 species of ants on Earth, and their total biomass is higher than that of all humans combined. They invented agriculture more than 50 million years ago, turn more soil than earthworms, can lift 5,000 times their bod weight, and can form supercolonies that span across continents. With the third largest tropical forest in the world, Indonesia is home to thousands of ant species, many of them unknown to science. This book documents more than 300 ant species that were found in rainforests and agroforestry of Jambi Province, Sumatra, and includes a recently updated Identification Key to the ant genera of Southeast Asia. Studying this book will bring you closer to our planet’s fascinating diversity, and the little things that run our world. This book will be a great starting point for those who want to know more about the ants of Southeast Asia, as well as a valuable resource for scientists and students studying ants this part of the world. Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute inflammatory syndrome of unknown etiology that is complicated by cardiovascular sequelae. Chronic inflammation (vasculitis) due to KD might cause vascular cellular senescence and vascular endothelial cell damage, and is a potential cause of atherosclerosis in young adults. This study examined the effect of KD and HMG-CoA inhibitors (statins) on vascular cellular senescence and vascular endothelial cells. Candida albicans water-soluble fraction (CAWS) was administered intraperitoneally to 5-week-old male apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE−) mice to induce KD-like vasculitis. The mice were then divided into three groups: control, CAWS, and CAWS+statin groups. Ten weeks after injection, the mice were sacrificed and whole aortic tissue specimens were collected. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression in the ascending aortic intima epithelium was evaluated using immunostaining. In addition, eNOS expression and levels of cellular senescence markers were measured in RNA and proteins extracted from whole aortic tissue. KD-like vasculitis impaired vascular endothelial cells that produce eNOS, which maintains vascular homeostasis, and promoted macrophage infiltration into the tissue. Statins also restored vascular endothelial cell function by promoting eNOS expression. Statins may be used to prevent secondary cardiovascular events during the chronic phase of KD.

Sea container has been identified as a major pathway for the unintended entry and spread of alien ant species. In Japan, red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), which are among the most harmful alien ants, were first detected in a shipping container from China in May 2017, and the invasion into Japan via the trade pathway is still continuing. To prevent containers contaminated with S. invicta and its establishment in Japan, control measures, such as repellents, are urgently required. The present study is the first to evaluate repellency of microencapsulated allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) against S. invicta, as a preliminary step to use the innovative equipment for invasive species management in sea containers. In a field in Taiwan heavily infested with S. invicta, a repellent test of microencapsulated AITC using bait traps showed that the equipment completely prevents S. invicta from accessing the bait. Due to its volatility and irritancy, AITC, a safe natural repellant in wasabi (Eutrema japonicum (Miq.) Kiudz), has not been used for pest management in containerized cargo. However, the encapsulation of AITC solves this problem by allowing controlled vapor release. Microencapsulated AITC has considerable potential as an effective measure to stop the spread of S. invicta through global trade.

Accurate morphological ant mimicry by Myrmarachne jumping spiders confers strong protective benefits against predators. However, it has been hypothesized that the slender and constricted ant-like appearance imposes costs on the hunting ability because their jumping power to capture prey is obtained from hydraulic pressure in their bodies. This hypothesis remains to be sufficiently investigated. We compared the jumping and prey-capture abilities of seven Myrmarachne species and non-myrmecomorphic salticids collected from tropical forests in Malaysian Borneo and northeastern Thailand. We found that the mimics had significantly reduced abilities compared with the non-mimics. The analysis using geometric morphometric techniques revealed that the reduced abilities were strongly associated with the morphological traits for ant mimicry and relatively lower abilities were found in Myrmarachne species with a more narrowed form. These results support the hypothesis that the jumping ability to capture prey is constrained by the morphological mimicry and provide a new insight into understanding the evolutionary costs of accurate mimicry.

Spin and orbital freedoms of electrons traveling on spin-resolved quantum Hall edge states (quantum Hall ferromagnets) are maximally entangled. The unitary operations on these two freedoms are hence equivalent, which means one can manipulate the spins with non-magnetic methods through the orbitals. If one takes the quantization axis of spins along the magnetization axis, the zenith angle is determined by the partition rate of spin-separated edges while the azimuth angle is defined as the phase difference between the edges. Utilizing these properties, we have realized electrically controlled unitary operation on the electron spins on the quantum Hall ferromagnets. The zenith angle of the spin was controlled through the radius of gyration at a corner by means of applying voltage to a thin gate placed at one edge. The subsequent rotation in the azimuth angle was controlled via the distance between the edge channels also by a gate voltage. The combination of the two operations constitutes the first systematic electric operation on spins in the quantum Hall edge channels.

Ants and termites are highly abundant in tropical forest soil, but their role in soil CO2 emission is poorly understood. Our goal in this study was to determine the CO2 emission from nests of ants and termites in a tropical rainforest in Sarawak (Borneo), Malaysia. The study was conducted in Lambir Hills National Park, Miri. We located nests of ants and termites and measured CO2 emission from the nests and from the surrounding control soils. Soil temperature and moisture content were also recorded at the nests and control soil locations. The ants and termites were identified to genera (and to species in many cases) and their body mass was determined. In total, we found 113 nests of 36 ant species and 20 nests of 10 termite species. CO2 emission from ant and termite nests was significantly higher than that from the surrounding soils, suggesting ant and termite nests are hot spots of CO2 emission from the soil. Because of nesting activities, soil moisture content was significantly lower in ant nests compared to that of the control soils. The effect of soil temperature and moisture content on nest CO2 emission was less clear when compared to emission from the surrounding control soils. Significant differences in nest CO2 emission were observed between different ant species, which could be partly attributable to differences in body mass.

The patient was a 68-year-old man who had an anal fistula for10 years. He was referred to our institution after visiting a local physician with left femoral pain as the main complaint and received a diagnosis of high inflammatory response. We then found discharge of pus in the perianal region during a medical examination. We also found an extensive intrapelvic tumor during a computed tomography(CT)/magnetic resonance imaging examination. In addition, the level ofa tumor marker and inflammatory response were high. To control the inflammation, we performed seton drainage and sigmoid colostomy. On the basis of the pathological findings from the mucus component, we confirmed a diagnosis of fistula cancer. Considering that the progressive lesion had extensively spread, we decided to initiate chemotherapy alone because ofthe absence ofan indication for radiotherapy. We administered bevacizumab plus mFOLFOX6, and partial response was observed on a CT scan. We could control the progression ofthe disease for6 months. The present case suggests that bevacizumab plus mFOLFOX6 can be an effective regimen for unresectable advanced fistula cancers.

Background Kawasaki disease (KD), a systemic vasculitis, is suspected to be related to abnormalities in innate immunity. Based on the important role of IL-1 signaling in innate immunity, we investigated the effects of an anti-IL-1β antibody using a Candida albicans water-soluble fraction (CAWS)-induced mouse model of KD. Methods CAWS (0.5 mg/mouse) was injected intraperitoneally into 5-week-old DBA/2 mice on five consecutive days. An anti-Murine IL-1β antibody (01BSUR) was administered at various doses (2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mg/kg) and time points (2 days before, same day, and 2, 5, 7, and 14 days after CAWS administration). After 4 weeks, vasculitis in the aortic root was investigated histologically. Cytokines including IL-1β, -6, -10, and TNF-α were also measured. Results Groups administered 01BSUR at all doses showed a significant reduction in the area of vasculitis. In addition, 01BSUR inhibited vasculitis until 7 days after CAWS administration. In the analysis of various time points, the level of IL-6 was lower in all groups compared to the CAWS only group, but the levels of IL-1β, TNFα, and IL-10 were lower when 01BSUR was administered before CAWS. On the other hand, TNFα and IL-10 levels were restored when 01BSUR was administered after CAWS, suggesting that 01BSUR may have additional effects beyond blocking IL-1β signaling. Conclusions The anti-IL-1β antibody significantly attenuated CAWS-induced vasculitis. The mechanism of inhibiting vasculitis is thought to include inhibition of the IL-1β pathway and additional effects beyond blocking IL-1β signaling.

Natural two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) on the surface of n-type InAs has been used for studying superconductor-semiconductor junctions. For high mobility and easiness in sample design, however, 2DEGs in quantum wells are more favorable. Even at the edges of such thin InAs films for quantum wells, one-dimensional (1D) electrons may be formed and give rise to various phenomena in transport. Such conduction through the 1D edge states is of interest in itself, but on the other hand, may give some artifacts in the study of superconductor-semiconductor junctions. Hence it is important to separate the 1D conduction through the accumulation edges. Here we report such edge states carry supercurrent and affect quantum Hall effect. The experiment was carried out in a strip of InAs two-dimensional electron gas with a quantum point contact (QPC) on one of the edges. Supercurrent was observed in low magnetic field, and the critical current decreased when the conductivity of QPC was reduced. In high magnetic field, the resistance showed dip structures in the transition region between quantum Hall plateaus. We infer that these characteristic transport properties come from negative band bending of InAs, which leads to charge accumulation on edges.

In the last century the band-gap engineering including modulation doping technique, largely expanded the possibility of solid state devices. The concept of topology came into our view in the beginning of the present century. The first claim of topological insulator utilized quantum well to kill the topological anomaly in HgTe. Synthesis of artificial topological material is then one of the next target.

The Josephson supercurrent in ballistic superconductor/normal metal/superconductor (SNS) junctions is carried through the Andreev bound states (ABS) formed in the normal conductor. These virtual states of traversing electrons and holes are modulated but not destroyed by time-reversal symmetry conserving perturbation. However, we found that the critical current of the Nb/InAs/Nb junctions are strongly suppressed by the spin current, which keeps time-reversal symmetry.

Magnetic field and spin-orbit interaction (SOI) are representative freedoms that can be entangled to electron spins. In experiments, while magnetic field strong enough for the control of spin is difficult to be localized onto the area for single spins such as quantum dots, the orbit can be localized to narrow regions with mesoscopic structures. Hence for quantum information manipulation borne by electron spins, the control through SOI has an advantage in that sense.

For the purpose of application for structural members such as the automobile, effect of carbon modification to the AZ91D magnesium alloy chip surface on fatigue property was examined by the rotary bending test. The carbon modification to the chip surface was quite useful for the control of the internal defect for the thick part on the thixomolding process. The depression of the internal defect by the carbon nanoparticle modification is closely related to the improvement of flowability, and that is presumed to be based on promoting the filling of the molten metal into the metal die inside. The tensile strength and elongation were respectively improved by the carbon addition. In addition, the fatigue strength also improved over 15%. This improvement of the mechanical property is based on the refinement of the crystal grain as well as the depression of the internal defects.

Solubility of flavone, 6-methoxyflavone and anthracene in supercritical CO 2 with an ethanol co-solvent ranging from 0.05 to 0.40 were measured at 333 K and 22.0 MPa. Solubility of each compound increased with increasing mole fraction of ethanol. Solubility data were correlated with Chrastil equation considering a relationship between fluid density and solubility and compared with newly proposed relations that use an entropy-based solubility parameter (SSP). Among proposed relations, one relation taking temperature dependence into consideration, that included two fitting parameters had absolute relative deviation (ARD) of 3.9% compared to the experimental data and were much more reliable than a relation not taking temperature dependence into consideration within ARD of 7.6%. The expression similar to Chrastil model that included three fitting parameters and considered SSP was the best ARD within 3.6% among the proposed relations. From these correlation results, the SSP can be applied to determine the solubility of substances at high pressure with multicomponent solvent mixtures.

Primary forests are known to have positive effects on the biodiversity of surrounding secondary forests. However, it is unclear whether primary forest remnants affect the feeding habits of consumers that inhabit secondary forests. Here, we examined whether the feeding habits of ants (Formicidae: Hymenoptera) belonging to four taxonomic groups ( Camponotus gigas , Odontomachus rixosus , Pachycondyla spp., and Polyrhachis spp.) differed in Macaranga secondary forests with different proportions of surrounding primary forest remnants in Sarawak, Malaysia. In the secondary forests, our previous study showed that species diversity of ants significantly increased as the proportion of surrounding primary forest remnants increased. We explored feeding habits by measuring carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ 13 C and δ 15 N). We also estimated the diet age of the ants, which represents the lag time between primary production and utilization by ants, by performing radiocarbon (Δ 14 C) measurements. δ 13 C of ants and litter decreased with the increase in primary forest remnants, likely indicating a more closed canopy cover around the sites. Meanwhile, baseline-corrected δ 15 N of ants, which considered the variation in plant δ 15 N among study sites, or diet ages of the ants did not show significant response to the proportion of the surrounding primary forest remnants. δ 13 C, δ 15 N, and diet ages showed consistent differences among the ant taxa across different proportions of primary forest remnants. These isotopic patterns suggest that, in contrast to the effect on species diversity, surrounding primary forest remnants did not markedly affect the feeding habits of the ants that persisted in the secondary forests.

We provide evidence for spin-triplet electron pairing in proximity-induced superconductivity in a ferromagnetic semiconductor (In,Fe)As. As discovered in half-metallic materials, an extraordinarily long proximity range is observed. More surprising is a very strong concentration of supercurrent to the edges of the superconducting region, which is deduced from the extremely persistent oscillation of the critical current vs magnetic field. The maxima of the critical current appear not at the zero magnetic flux but at around the maximum magnetic disorder, reflecting the connectivity between the spin-triplet and singlet pairings. These spin-triplet natures in proximity superconductivity also reveal ferromagnetic properties of (In,Fe)As.

Background and Aim An intention-to-treat prospective randomized study was carried out to compare the potentiation of antiviral efficacies between cholecalciferol, non-activated vitamin D3 supplement, and alfacalcidol, activated 1α-Hydroxyvitamin D3 [1α (OH)-vitamin D3]. Methods Chronic hepatitis patients with genotype 1b hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection showing serum HCV-RNA levels greater than 5 Log IU/mL received oral administration of cholecalciferol (2000 IU/day) or alfacalcidol (0.5 μg/day) for 4 weeks, and then they were given pegylated interferon (Peg-IFN)-α2a plus ribavirin therapy in combination with either vitamin D3 for 48 or 72 weeks according to the response-guided manner. Results A total of 36 patients were evaluated. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)-D3] levels were increased only in patients in the cholecalciferol group during the lead-in vitamin D administration, and the levels at 4 weeks were higher in these patients than in those in the alfacalcidol group (P

In tropical rain forests, high canopy trees have diverse and abundant populations of ants and spiders. However, accessing high trees and their fauna remains difficult; thus, how ants and spiders interact in the canopy remains unclear. To better understand the interspecific interactions between these two dominant arthropod groups, we investigated their spatial distributions at the canopy surface in a tropical rain forest in Borneo. We sampled ants and spiders six times between 2009 and 2011 by sweeping with an insect net at the tree crown surfaces of 190 emergent or tall (≥20 m in height) trees. We collected 438 ant individuals belonging to 94 species and 1850 spider individuals (1630 juveniles and 220 adults) belonging to 142 morphospecies (adults only) from a total of 976 samples. The fact that we collected four times more spider individuals than ant individuals suggests that fewer ants forage at the tree crown surface than previously thought. The number of spider individuals negatively correlated with the number of ant individuals and the number of ant species, indicating significant exclusivity between ant and spider spatial distributions at the tree crown surface. Niche-overlap between the two taxa confirmed this observation. Although our data do not address the causes of these spatial distributions, antagonistic interspecific interactions such as interference behaviors and intra-guild predation are ecological mechanisms that give rise to exclusive spatial distributions.

Aim To optimize the therapeutic efficacy of NS3/4A protease inhibitors, a multicenter prospective study was performed according to an algorithm based on the Adherence, IL-28B Gene Allele and Viral Response Trial (AG & RGT). Methods A total of 340 patients with genotype 1b hepatitis C virus (HCV) showing serum RNA levels of >5 log were enrolled. The duration of ribavirin/pegylated interferon (PEG IFN)-α-2b therapy was prolonged to 48 weeks in patients with unfavorable IL28B alleles showing adherence rates of less than 80% for either drug during the first 12 weeks even if RVR had been achieved, and in those in whom cEVR, but not RVR, was achieved; furthermore, to 72 weeks in those showing partial early viral response. Results The therapeutic outcomes were assessed in 282 patients, and the therapy was set to complete at 24 weeks in 181 patients (64%) and to prolong to 48 weeks or 72 weeks in 71 patients (25%). The former group showed a SVR rate of 84%, while the latter group showed an SVR rate of 69% with a relapse rate of 7%. The SVR rate was 33% in the 30 patients (11%) in whom the therapy had to be discontinued in less than 12 weeks. Thus, the results of intention-to-treat analysis revealed an overall SVR rate of 75%. Multivariate analysis identified prolongation of the duration of therapy as a significant factor associated with SVR. Conclusion Triple therapy yielded a high SVR rate in the AG & RGT trial via attenuation of viral relapse by prolonged ribavirin/PEG IFN-α-2b administration. © 2015 The Japan Society of Hepatology

The highly successful Dirac equation predicts peculiar phenomena such as Klein tunnelling and Zitterbewegung (ZB) of electrons. From its conception by Erwin Schrödinger, ZB has been considered key in understanding relativistic quantum mechanics. However, observing the ZB of electrons has proved difficult, and instead various emulations of the phenomenon have been proposed producing several successes. Concerning charge transport in semiconductors and graphene, expectations were high but little has been reported. Here, we report a surprisingly large ZB effect on charge transport in a semiconductor nanostructure playing “flat pinball”. The setup is a narrow strip of InAs two-dimensional electron gas with strong Rashba spin–orbit coupling. Six quantum point contacts act as pinball pockets. In transiting between two contacts, ZB appears as a large reproducible conductance fluctuation that depends on the in-plane magnetic field. Numerical simulations successfully reproduced our experimental observations confirming that ZB causes this conductance fluctuation.

Many ant species construct subterranean nests. The presence of their nests may explain soil respiration "hot spots", an important factor in the high CO2 efflux from tropical forests. However, no studies have directly measured CO2 efflux from ant nests. We established 61 experimental plots containing 13 subterranean ant species to evaluate the CO2 efflux from subterranean ant nests in a tropical seasonal forest, Thailand. We examined differences in nest CO2 efflux among ant species. We determined the effects of environmental factors on nest CO2 efflux and calculated an index of nest structure. The mean CO2 efflux from nests was significantly higher than those from the surrounding soil in the wet and dry seasons. The CO2 efflux was species-specific, showing significant differences among the 13 ant species. The soil moisture content significantly affected nest CO2 efflux, but there was no clear relationship between nest CO2 efflux and nest soil temperature. The diameter of the nest entrance hole affected CO2 efflux. However, there was no significant difference in CO2 efflux rates between single-hole and multiple-hole nests. Our results suggest that in a tropical forest ecosystem the increase in CO2 efflux from subterranean ant nests is caused by species-specific activity of ants, the nest soil environment, and nest structure., Ecology and Evolution, 4(20), pp.3929-3939; 2014

Pristine topological insulators (TIs) with no carrier doping principally suffer from a lack of magnetic ordering. We create a nanomesh structure, a honeycomblike array of hexagonal nanopores with extremely high density, on a nondoped two-dimensional (2D) thin TI (Bi2Te3). We observe antiferromagnetism (AFM) in completely hydrogen-terminated nanomeshes, while it is eliminated by ferromagnetism (FM) in completely O-terminated nanomeshes. Interplay between the AFM and FM is observed in partially O-terminated nanomeshes. As a possible origin for the observed magnetisms, Kramers doublets, which may exist around nanopore edges, for AFM and those eliminated by FM spin alignment due to O-Te coupling along pore edges are discussed based on the structure and annealing dependence of the magnetisms. The nondoped 2D nanomesh formed on a TI will lead to new avenues of research on topological magnetisms and spintronics.
