The light rare earth Pr/Ce-contained (Tb0.2Pr0.8)1–xCexFe1.93 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) intermetallics were arc melted and magnetoelastic properties were investigated. The compounds of x ≥ 0.40 are found to stabilize at ambient pressure in a single Laves phase with MgCu2-type C15 structure, which is attributed to the strong Ce 4f bonding. The mixed-valence behavior, with a support of the deviation from the linear Vegard’s law for both lattice parameter a and saturation magnetization MS, is observed at room temperature. The easy magnetization direction (EMD) was determined by the analysis of XRD on both magnetically aligned samples and the (440) splitting, that is, EMD lies toward axis for x ≤ 0.50 rotating to for x = 0.60, accompanied with the structural distortion from rhombohedral to orthorhombic. The substitution of Ce for Tb/Pr is conductive to the reduction of magnetocrystalline anisotropy, giving rise to an improvement of the low-field magnetostriction. The excellent magnetoelastic properties can be tailored by the Ce introduction, e.g., the spontaneous magnetostriction coefficient λ111 as large as 1150 × 10−6 for x = 0.40, and the low-field induced magnetostriction achieving a high value of λa = 180 × 10−6 at 80 kA/m for x = 0.60. The excellent magnetoelastic properties and the combination in high Pr-content with low cost, suggest promising prospects in applications.

Utilizing anionic redox activity within layered oxide cathode materials represents a transformational avenue for enabling high-energy-density rechargeable batteries. However, the anionic oxygen redox reaction is often accompanied with irreversible dynamic oxygen evolution, leading to unfavorable structural distortion and thus severe voltage decay and rapid capacity fading. Herein, it is proposed and validated that the dynamic oxygen evolution can be effectively suppressed through the synergistic surface CaTiO

The need for high-performance capacitors that possess superb discharged energy density and efficiency is continually increasing. Relaxor ferroelectric 0.94(0.65Na0·5Bi0·5TiO3-0.35Sr0·7Bi0·2TiO3)-0.06K0·5Na0·5NbO3 ((NBT-SBT)-KNN) ceramics with different MnO2-doping concentrations are prepared in this study. An outstanding discharged energy density (Wrec = 3.25 J/cm3) and efficiency (η = 93.8%) are concurrently acquired under 280 kV/cm for these doped ceramics. The ceramics also exhibit extraordinary thermal (30–200 °C), frequency-dependent (1–200 Hz) and fatigue stability (104 st). Additionally, the (NBT-SBT)-KNN-0.08 mol.% MnO2 ceramic displays a large power density (42 MW/cm3) and an ultrafast discharge speed (98 ns). This contribution offers powerful support for the use of energy storage ceramics in practical applications.

Morphotropic phase (MPB) eco-friendly ferroelectric 0.94Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3- 0.06BaTiO3 (NBT-BT) ceramics exhibits superior piezoelectric performances. However, the large remnant polarization (Pr) and low breakdown strength (Eb) of NBT-BT systems hinders application in energy storage capacitors. Herein, the Bi(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 (BZN) is selected to partially replace the NBT-BT ceramics to break ferroelectric long-range order domains achieving higher energy storage properties. Highly recoverable energy storage density (Wrec ~ 3 J/cm3) and efficiency (η ~ 75%) are acquired in (NBT-BT)-0.06BZN ceramics under a low applied electric field of 210 kV/cm. Furthermore, superior temperature stability (20–120 °C), and frequency (1–1000 Hz) stability, and fatigue endurance (105 st) are also gained. These advantages further suggest that the (NBT-BT)-0.06BZN ceramics exhibit great promise in pulsed power markets.

Olanzapine (OLA) is a common drug used to treat schizophrenia and has recently come under increasing scrutiny as an emerging contaminant. However, its impact on lipid metabolism in fish and its mechanisms of action are not well understood. In this study, common carp were exposed to 0, 10, 100, and 250 μM OLA for 60 days. The results indicated that OLA exposure increased weight gain, total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides (TG) and decreased high-density lipoprotein (HDL). In addition, lipids accumulated in the liver of the common carp. To explore the underlying mechanisms of action, gut microbiota, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), liver transcripts, and genes related to lipid metabolism were measured. It was discovered that OLA exposure altered the common carp gut microbiota composition and increased the abundance of SCFA-producing bacteria. Correspondingly, this study showed that OLA exposure increased the levels of SCFAs, which are highly relevant to the development of lipid accumulation. Transcriptome sequencing results indicated that OLA exposure could change lipid metabolism signalling pathways, including steroid biosynthesis, the PPAR signalling pathway, asglycerophospholipid metabolism, glycerolipid metabolism, and fatty acid metabolic pathways of the common carp. Additionally, OLA exposure interrupted lipid metabolism by means of significant upregulation of lipid synthesis-related genes, including pparγ, srebp1, and fas. OLA exposure also resulted in significant lipolysis-related gene downregulation, including cpt, lpl, hsl, and pparα. The results of this study indicated that contamination of aquatic environments with OLA alters lipid metabolism in common carp. In addition, the underlying mechanism might be due in part to the modulation of the gut microbiota-SCFA-PPAR signalling pathway.

The development of excellent circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials with both a high luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) and high quantum yield (Φlum) is crucial for realizing 3D displays. Herein, we prepared chiral-emitting ternary liquid crystals (T-N*-LCs) containing the chiral binaphthyl dopant R/S-BF (a chiral inducer and energy donor) and the achiral dye Nile Red (a CPL emitter and energy acceptor) using the commercial nematic liquid crystals E7 (N-LCs) as a host. These ternary N*-LCs exhibited a photosensitive-type red CPL response controlled by an intermolecular dynamic Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism. Under irradiation with 365 nm ultraviolet light (hand-held 1.0 mW cm−2 UV light), the binary-emitting liquid crystals containing R/S-BF in E7 showed a transition from a strong green CPL signal (λem = 480 nm, glum = +0.28/−0.25) to weak blue CPL (λem = 438 nm, glum = +0.03/−0.028) due to the Z-to-E isomerization of R/S-BF. Interestingly, T-N*-LCs loaded with the energy receptor Nile Red exhibited interconversion between a “strong” and “weak” red CPL response before and after irradiation with 365 nm UV light, which can be attributed to an intermolecular dynamic FRET process based on different overlap between the absorption of the acceptor (NR) and the distinct emissions of the Z- and E-isomers of the donor R/S-BF. Strong red CPL emission (glum = +0.63/−0.65, λem = 625 nm) was observed due to the high helical twisting power of Z-R/S-BF and efficient FRET from Z-R/S-BF to NR. This work paves the way for the construction of chiral optical information storage with photochromic change functionality.

Chiral emissive liquid crystals (N*-LCs) have been proved to greatly amplify the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals due to highly regular spiral arrangement of dyes in a well-organized liquid crystals system. Normally, CPL materials with a high luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) and quantum yield (QY) can meet the real application requirement. Here, four chiral aggregate-induced emission (AIE) active donors (Guests A1-A4: R-C2, R-C4, R-C6, R-C8, chiral dopant, and energy donor) and achiral AIE-active acceptors (Guest B: PBCy, CPL emitter) were doped into the commercial nematic liquid crystals E7 (N-LCs, Host) to form CPL-active ternary chiral emissive N-LCs (T-N*-LCs), respectively. This kind of T-N*-LCs could emit strong red CPL with QY = 16.56% and glum up to 1.51 through intermolecular energy transfer and chirality induction from the supramolecular self-assembly of T-N*-LCs. This work provides the effective strategy for the development of high glum CPL materials.

The extensive application of metal-based nanoparticles can pose environmental risks, but how the alternation of wet and dry caused by natural precipitation and artificial irrigation affects the environmental fate of nanoparticles is still unclear. Here, we investigated the underlying mechanisms of wetting-drying cycles (WDCs) on the Cu bioavailability in paddy soil treated with CuO nanoparticles (100 and 500 mg/kg) during 140 days by comparing with drought and flooding conditions. The results show that soil moisture content greatly affected the soil pH and redox potential. The bioavailable Cu contents in the WDCs exposed to CuO nanoparticles were positively correlated to moisture content and WDCs number. The fit result of the pseudo-second-order equation indicates that WDCs greatly prevented the aging process of Cu in soil. Furthermore, WDCs transformed oxidizable Cu to water-soluble, acid extractable and reducible Cu. WDCs markedly promoted the degradation of dissolved organic matter and the transformation of acid-soluble sulfate to water-soluble inorganic sulfate, meanwhile, significantly enhanced the contents of crystalline iron oxides by 22-57% and 82-326% with respect to drought and flooding, but reduced the level of ferrous iron by 37-67% compared to the flooding. µ-XRF analysis shows that the fate of CuO nanoparticles might be mainly determined by Fe under WDCs condition but by S in flooded soil. This study can provide a comprehensive assessment on the impact of natural precipitation and artificial irrigation on the environmental risks of MNPs.

A novel co-assembly material can emit strong CPL signals (glum = +0.076/−0.064) from an achiral AIE-active β-cyanostilbene liquid crystal through intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction and chirality induction after a rapid cooling quench treatment.

As the analogs of Li-rich materials, Na-rich transition metal layered oxides are promising cathode materials for Na-ion batteries owing to their high theoretical capacity and energy density through cumulative cationic and anionic redox. However, most of the reported Na-rich cathode materials are mainly Ru- and Ir-based layered oxides, which limits the practical application. Herein, we report a Na-rich and Ru-doped O3-type Na1.1Ni0.35Mn0.55O2 cathode to mitigate this issue. By partially substituting Mn4+ with high-electronegativity Ru4+, the structural stability and electrochemical performance of the cathode are both greatly improved. It is validated that the high covalency of Ru–O bonds could harden the structural integrity with rigid oxygen framework upon cycling, leading to enhanced O3-P3 phase transition reversibility. Ru doping also induces an enlarged interlayer spacing to boost the Na+ diffusion kinetics for improved rate capability. In addition, benefiting from the large energetic overlap between Ru 4d and O 2p states, the reinforced Ru–O covalency enables highly reversible Ru4+/Ru5+ redox accompanied with more stable oxygen redox, leading to improved specific capacity and stability over cycling. Our present study provides a promising strategy for designing high-performance Na-rich layered oxide cathode materials through covalency modulation toward practical applications.

Ternary polymer dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals (PD-CLCs) prepared by doping AIE-active binaphthyl-based molecules (R/S-AD, chiral dopant) and the achiral liquid crystal fluorescent polymer, poly(p-phenylene ethynylene) (LC-PPE, CPL emitter) into 5CB, can emit strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with gem up to 0.97. This work develops a new strategy for designing strong CPL materials.

Two pairs of D–A type chiral binaphthyl dyes (R/S-M1 and R/S-M2) as CPL emitters were synthesized and doped into nematic liquid crystals (N-LCs, E7) to form chiral emissive nematic liquid crystals (N*-LCs). The resulting N*-LCs-2 with a smaller dihedral angle of the binaphthyl backbone can emit a strong CPL signal (gem = −0.83/+0.86) compared with N*-LCs-1 (gem = −0.20/+0.26) due to the high helix twist power (HTP) in the N*-LCs-2 system. Most importantly, recyclable CPL response behavior in N*-LCs could be observed by using the applied direct current (DC) electric field with the electric phase transition effect (EPT) through texture change from the planar texture into focal conic texture, and then the uniformly-lying helical texture (ULH state). This kind of “on–off–on” system based on DC electric field can adjust the gem value and direction of CPL in N*-LCs. This work can provide a novel strategy for developing a novel CPL device on N*-LCs through the applied DC electric field.

Ferrous ions (Fe2+) in the rhizosphere play an indispensable role in the interaction between plants and nanoparticles (NPs). Here, we investigated the effect of Fe2+ (3 mM) on the dynamic adsorption, uptake and accumulation of CuO NPs (100 mg L−1) by rice plants using μ-XRF combined with metabolomics. The results show that the Cu content adsorbed by roots at 72 h was reduced by 71% compared to that at 6 h with the formation of sufficient amorphous iron plaque induced by Fe2+, which was consistent with the inverse changes of Fe and Cu intensities in μ-XRF mappings. Furthermore, the absorbed Cu contents in the roots and shoots were dramatically reduced by 90.3% and 47.2% compared to those exposed to only NPs at 72 h, respectively, due to the presence of Fe2+. The supply of Fe2+ triggered the decline in Cu contents of the roots and shoots from 6 h to 72 h by up to 81.5% and 41.3%. Metabolomics analysis indicates that Fe2+ markedly downregulated abundant organic acids and amino acids with respect to the control and NP treatment, but significantly upregulated fatty acids compared to the NP treatment, thus lessening the Cu accumulation in rice. This study provides new ideas for alleviating the stress caused by NPs in plants.

Endogenous pollution is one of the most notable issues in drinking water reservoirs, since the sediment is a main sink of contaminants in the aquatic environment. In this work, we investigated the spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metals and different species of N and P and assessed the pollution risks of the sediments from the Chenhang Reservoir, which is the first drinking water reservoir supplied by Yangtze River in Shanghai, China. The results show that heavy metals, including Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, and Fe, were mainly accumulated in the downstream, while most Ni and Cr were concentrated in the sediments from the central and western zones. Total N in the sediments was primarily distributed in the eastern reservoir, while ammonia N and most of total P were accumulated in the central and eastern areas. The geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and potential ecological risk index (PERI) suggest that the sediments were polluted by combined heavy metals at minor to medium levels, posing a potential risk to ecosystem. Moreover, sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) indicate that Ni in all sites and Zn in the eastern reservoir would cause great negative biological response to benthic organisms. Additionally, the sediments were slightly polluted by N but not P, especially in the downstream. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed that Cu, Zn, Pb, and N mainly derived from industrial wastewater, domestic sewage and surface runoff from the Yangtze River, while Cr, Ni, and P mainly originated from natural erosion and nonpoint sources.

Substantial attention for dielectric ceramic capacitors toward lead-free has been driven by the enhanced awareness of environmental protection. However, the unsatisfying breakdown strength (Eb) and comparatively low efficiency (η) becomes an obstacle for their widespread application. Here, environment-friendly lead-free relaxor ferroelectric (1-x) (0.67BiFeO3-0.33Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3) -xSr0.7La0.2TiO3+0.1 wt.% MnO2 (BFO-BST-SLT) ceramic is reported as an efficient route to possess excellent Eb and high η simultaneously. The doping of SLT can significantly suppress the grain growth, improve the relaxation behavior, and thus increasing the Eb and η of the ceramics. Consequently, the corresponding ceramics with x=0.3 achieves good discharged energy density of ~ 2.55 J/cm3 and ultrahigh η of ~ 92%. Notably, it presents outstanding charging/discharging performances with fast charging/discharging time (~ 0.0266 μs), power density (~ 28.11 MW/cm3) along with current density (~ 468.5 A/cm2). Together with great temperature stability, frequency stability and cycle stability, this contributes provides a crucial way to prepare lead-free dielectrics for next-generation pulsed power capacitor applications.

Surface layer (S-layer) proteins are one of the most commonly observed cell envelope components in both Archaea and Bacteria. It has versatile functions and holds considerable application potential in biotechnology. Bifidobacteria are representative probiotics conferring health promoting properties. However, there is little study of S-layer in bifidobacteria yet. The distribution and characteristics of S-layer in bifidobacteria are unknown. In this study, search for S-layer protein in the identical protein groups in NCBI yielded 49 hits belonging to bifidobacteria. These proteins were annotated as either “S-layer (domain) protein” or “putative S-layer (y) domain protein” that distributed among 26 species of Bifidobacterium genus. Multiple alignments suggest S-layer proteins are relatively conservative. Phylogenetic analysis of 24 S-layer (domain) protein sequences groups them into three distinct clusters, with the majority species in Cluster-2. S-layer (domain) protein has a universe motif DUF4381, though its function is unknown. Meanwhile, two other motifs CARDB and EphA2_TM involved in cell adhesion and cell signaling respectively, presented in most S-layer (domain) protein in bifidobacteria. All S-layer proteins have a typical N-terminal Sec-dependent signal peptide and a C-terminal trans-membrane region. Homological modeling of representative S-layer proteins from each cluster revealed a few unique structural features. All representative S-layer proteins have a plenty of β-meander motif that exclusively composed by β-barrel structural architectures linked together by hairpin loops.

Bifidobacteria are probiotic bacteria with multiple health-promoting properties for human being. The global market for probiotics, especially for bifidobacteria is booming. However, the entire market is still at an early stage as there is nearly no fine products developed yet except the whole bacterial cells. The maturation of metabolomics technologies make it possible to study complex mixture with high-throughput, comprehensive maps and libraries. Therefore, we prospect that metabolomics studies mainly based on liquid/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/GC-MS) can deepen our understanding in detail during the study of metabolic mechanisms of bifidobacteria. These studies can be conducted at three phases, including non-targeted, targeted metabolomic analysis of bifidobacteria, and specific metabolites production through metabolic engineering and fermentation. Metabolomic studies of bifidobacteria will allow us to fully explore their metabolic mechanisms and to utilize metabolites that contribute to human health. In particular, bifidobacteria derived conjugated linoleic acids and bacteriocins are two kinds of fined products that may have great potentials in the future and can be used as food additives.

Environmental-friendly relaxation ferroelectrics are anticipated as an excellent comprehensive energy storage performance materials due to their near-zero remnant polarization and slim hysteresis loop. Here, the relaxor ferroelectrics (1-x)Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-x(Sr0.7La0.2)(Ti0.8Sn0.2)O3 ((1-x)NBT-xSLTS) ceramics with outstanding energy storage performances are synthesized by solid-state reaction. The dielectric properties exhibit obvious frequency dispersion characteristics, and the diffusion coefficient (γ) increases from 1.62 to 1.75 with the doping of SLTS. Also, a large polarization difference (∆P = 20.08 μC/cm2) and a high breakdown strength (Eb = 280 kV/cm) are also achieved simultaneously. As a result, a high recoverable energy density Wrec (~ 2.52 J/cm3), together with a satisfactory efficiency η (~ 89.3%), are attained in 0.55NBT-0.45SLTS ceramic. Additionally, the corresponding samples also show satisfactory stability over the wide temperature range of 20–140 °C, with the variables of Wrec and η are less than 7% and 2%, respectively. More importantly, this ceramic has an ultrashort discharge time τ0.9 (53 ns) and a high current density J (721.86 A/cm2). All these results reveal that 0.55NBT-0.45SLTS ceramic is an ideal lead-free next-generation candidate material for pulsed power systems.

An indole&ndash, 3&ndash, acetic acid producing Bacillus altitudinis WR10 was previously isolated from the root of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). In this study, the strain WR10 was used for relieving abiotic stresses in wheat under low phosphorus and high saline in hydroponic co-culture models. Significantly, strain WR10 improved wheat seed relative germination rate under salinity stress (200/400 mM NaCl) and the root dry weight in wheat seedlings under phosphorus stress (10 &mu, M KH2PO3) when insoluble phosphates are available. To provide insights into its abiotic stress-alleviating properties, the strain was characterized further. WR10 grows well under different culture conditions. Particularly, WR10 resists salt (12% NaCl) and hydrolyzes both inorganic and organic insoluble phosphates. WR10 uses many plant-derived substrates as sole carbon and energy sources. It produces catalase, amylase, phosphatase, phytase, reductase, and 1&ndash, aminocyclopropane&ndash, 1&ndash, carboxylate (ACC) deaminase. In addition, WR10 possesses long peritrichous flagella, and its biofilm formation, as well as phytase production, is induced by abiotic stresses. Overall, the salinity-alleviating property of WR10 in wheat can be attributed to its inherent tolerance to NaCl, formation of biofilm, and production of enzymes, like catalase, amylase, and ACC deaminase. Meanwhile, B. altitudinis WR10 reduces low-phosphorus stress in wheat by production of phosphatases and phytases in the presence of insoluble phosphates.

The Sm-Ni-Fe ternary system has been investigated at 773 K by means of powder x-ray diffraction, metallography and scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The isothermal section consists of 16 single-phase regions, 29 two-phase regions and 14 three-phase regions. The influence of Fe-doping on the structure and the microwave absorption properties of the SmNi5 compound has been systematically studied. The homogeneity range in Sm16.67Ni83.33−xFex was determined as x = 16.67. The lattice parameters were found to gradually increase and the particle size become much finer with the increase of Fe concentration. All the samples exhibited good microwave absorption properties in the X-band (8–12 GHz). The highest reflection loss of the Sm16.67Ni83.33−xFex (x = 0.0, 5.0, 10.0,15.0, 16.67) alloys are −10.12 dB, −10.39 dB, −16.44 dB, −20.69 dB, and −43.05 dB at 6.96 GHz, 7.92 GHz, 8.56 GHz, 10.04 GHz, and 11.08 GHz, respectively. The absorption peak shifted towards the higher frequency region with the increasing amount of Fe substitution.

The crystal structure and phase relations of the Pr 2 Fe 14 B-La 2 Fe 14 B system were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The crystal structure parameters were determined by full-profile Rietveld refinements. The results revealed that all alloys of (Pr 1– x La x ) 2 Fe 14 B crystallized the Nd 2 Fe 14 B-type structure with the space group P 4 2 / mnm and formed a continuous solid solutions between x =0.0 and 1.0. The lattice parameter a, c , unit-cell volume V and c/a ratio increased linearly with the La concentration. Determined by thermogravimetry analysis, the Curie temperature ( T C ), phase transition temperature and melting temperature of (Pr 1– x La x ) 2 Fe 14 B decreased linearly upon the La content. Based on the results of DSC measurements and X-ray powder diffraction examinations, the phase diagram of the Pr 2 Fe 14 B-La 2 Fe 14 B system was built up.

The nano-crystalline La 0.1 Bi 0.9 FeO 3 compound was successfully synthesized by starch-based combustion method. The crystal structure and magnetic behavior were studied by temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and magnetic measurements. The La 0.1 Bi 0.9 FeO 3 compounds crystallized in a rhombohedrally distorted perovskite structure with space group R 3 c . The substitution of La for Bi reduced the rhombohedral distortion. The structural phase transitions in La 0.1 Bi 0.9 FeO 3 driven by temperature showed that the extraordinary two-phase coexistence state of BiFeO 3 and LaFeO 3 was observed in a narrow temperature range of 630–700 °C. The magnetization of the La 0.1 Bi 0.9 FeO 3 sample was improved by heat treatment in the temperature range. When the heat treatment temperatures rose from 25 to 600 °C, the remanence ( M r ) and coercivity ( H c ) of the La 0.1 Bi 0.9 FeO 3 compound almost remained the same, and increased rapidly to 0.134 emu/g and 7.1 KOe on further increasing the heat treatment temperature to 650 °C.

A series of polycrystalline Bi1−xLaxFeO3 (0≤x≤1.00) solid solution were synthesized by sol–gel method. The effects of lanthanum concentration on the phase formation, phase transition and magnetic properties were studied. The XRD results displayed that there is a clear indication of structural modification and symmetry change brought about by La doping. Endogenous nutrients released from sediments are a potential hazardous source in aquatic ecosystems, especially reservoirs. Here, we investigated seasonal and spatial variations of different species of nitrogen and phosphorus and evaluated the pollution levels of nutrients in sediments from one of the world’s largest tidal reservoirs. The results indicate that most of the total nitrogen and phosphorus were accumulated in sediments from the reservoir downstream, which were enhanced by runoff and precipitation during seasonal alteration. Total nitrogen was increased to 2471.17 mg/kg during the saltwater intrusion period. Nitrate and ammonium were the major nitrogen fractions in flood and dry seasons, respectively, while the highest level of phosphorus, especially inorganic phosphorus, was found in summer. The sediment was slightly to moderately contaminated by nitrogen but not phosphorus, especially downstream in winter, according to the applied indices. Multivariate statistical analyses reveal that nutrient input in flood seasons was more complex than that in dry seasons, which possibly originated from upstream agricultural and domestic sewage.

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emission materials with high luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) and high quantum yield (QY) are currently in urgent demand for real applications. Three D-A type enantiomers (R-/S-1, 2 and 3) were designed and synthesized that combine a phenanthro [9,10-d]imidazole (PIP) unit to a naphthalimide (NI) at the p-, m-, o-positions. These AIE-active enantiomers were chosen as CPL emitters doped into nematic liquid crystals (E7, N-LCs) to form three chiral nematic liquid crystals (N*-LCs-1, 2 and 3). Interestingly, N*-LCs-1 shows higher glum (+0.91/-0.98) and QY (18.5%) than N*-LCs-2 (glum = +0.86/-0.89, QY = 1.3%) and N*-LCs-3 (glum = +0.010/-0.013, QY = 4.7%) due to effective chirality transfer and intramolecular electronic coupling from microstructure change of AIE-active isomers. This paper revealed that AI-CD and AI-CPL enhancement behavior of N*-LCs could be regulated not only by the chirality transfer via supramolecular self-assembly but also by the electronic coupling strength through microstructure change of AIE-active isomers of donor units in the chiral emitters. This work can provide a new strategy for the development of CPL LCs materials.
