Currently, antibiotics are commonly used to treat coccidiosis, a severe protozoal disease in chickens. However, due to growing concerns about the antibiotic residue in meat and eggs, phytogenic formulations are becoming an attractive approach to manage this disease. In this study, we investigated the anti-coccidial function and mechanism of phytogenic formulations composed of Bidens pilosa, Artemisia indica, and both used in combination. We found that these formulations increased the survival rate and reduced body weight loss, the feed conversion ratio, oocyst excretion, bloody stools, and gut lesions of chickens. Mechanistic studies showed that A. indica, but not B. pilosa, reduced the survival of Eimeria oocysts. Accordingly, they both inhibited oocyst sporulation and sporozoite invasion into Madin-Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cells. Overall, we demonstrate that these formulations protect chickens against coccidiosis. Moreover, a combination of B. pilosa and A. indica has an additive effect on coccidiosis control and growth performance in chickens compared to either one used alone.

The silicone rubber mold (SRM) has large applications for the pilot runs in the mold industry because it is capable of reducing the cost and time in a new product development phase. However, the cooling performance in the cooling stage is not acceptable after the injection molding due to low thermal conductivity of this material. To improve the cooling performance, five different fillers were added into the silicone rubber (SR) to develop SRM with better cooling performance in the cooling stage after injection molding. It was found that the alcohol used to remove the polyvinyl butyral resin cooling channels is less volatile, environmentally friendly, and less harmful to the operator compared with conventional method using acetone to remove the acrylonitrile butadiene styrene cooling channels. The cooling time of the molded wax pattern can be saved by 42.7%, 53.8%, 45.7%, 50.9%, and 16.7% for SRM with 60 wt.% Al, 80 wt.% Fe, 70 wt.% Cu, 25 wt.% graphite (G), and 20 wt.% carbon black powders compared with that for SRM without any fillers. The SR filled with 20 wt.% G powder seems to be the optimal method for producing an SRM with better cooling performance based on the heat transfer coefficient, production cost, and production yield of SRM.

Despite decades of research into faience artefacts in China, many questions remain about how, where and by whom this technology began. This study combines published and new results of chemical analysis, morphology and chronology of the earliest faience beads uncovered from Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Shaanxi and Shanxi to suggest that at the latest in the mid-second millennium BC faience was first imported from the northern Caucasus or the Steppe into Xinjiang. In the second half of the second millennium, the Kayue people in Qinghai began making high potash faience, before the Zhou people in Shaanxi and Shanxi learnt and distributed the technology more widely across central China, probably via contacts with their pastoralist neighbours.

Material properties of a thermoelectric generator play a pivotal role in directly converting heat into electricity. To provide a comprehensive study on power generation of thermoelectric generators, four different materials with constant and temperature-dependent properties are investigated numerically. The influences of the temperature difference across the elements, the temperature at the cold side surface, and the temperature oscillation at the hot side surface on the performance of the generators are simulated numerically and analyzed systematically. The predictions indicate that the output power, temperature-difference square rule, and impedance matching of the materials with the variable properties deviate from the theoretical results with constant properties, but their behavior always obeys the self-consistency. At a given temperature difference, a decrease in the cold surface temperature may intensify or abate the performance, depending on the material properties adopted. Oscillating the hot surface temperature may increase or decrease the output power and efficiency. In summary, the practical performance of a thermoelectric generator and its deviation from the theoretical performance depend strongly on the properties adopted. Therefore, the consideration of the variable properties of materials can provide a more realistic outcome compared to the predictions with constant properties.

Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) are a promising device to harvest waste heat for power generation. Three material properties of TEGs, including the Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity, and thermal conductivity, are often considered as constants in the simulation. However, the performance of TEGs changes with different temperature. In this study, the performances, such as output power and efficiency of one constant property material and three temperature-dependent property materials are investigated numerically. The influences of the temperature difference, the temperature at the cold side surface, and current on the performance of the TEGs are analyzed. The predictions indicate that the output power of the TEGs deviate from the formula when their properties are temperature-dependent. In other words, the output power of the TEGs is not directly proportional to the temperature difference squared. The simulations also satisfy the result of self-consistency. In the case of the fixed temperature difference of 100 oC, when the temperature at cold side surface is lower, different performances of TEG are followed by different materials. The results also tell that one material whose ZT value increases with the rise in temperature has a similar trend in output power and efficiency to the constant-property material. However, another material that has the maximum value in the ZT curve has different trend in output power and efficiency from those of the constant-property material.

To harvest waste heat from flue gas in the industry, this study develops an advanced simulation technology by integrating computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a thermoelectric module (TEM) where the TEM is modeled as a heat sink to absorb waste heat from flue gases. The influences of Reynolds number, convection heat transfer coefficient at the cold surface, flue gas inlet temperature, dual TEM, and channel geometry on the performance of the TEM system are evaluated. The results clearly provide a measure in increasing the performance of TEM with rising the Reynolds number, flue gas inlet temperature, and convection heat transfer coefficient at the cold surface. In the dual TEM system, the performance of the leading TEM is very close to that of the single TEM, and the dual TEM can produce an additional 43% power when compared with the single TEM. However, this also implies that the output power of the trailing TEM drops 57% when compared to the leading one, stemming for its impact upon the downstream TEM. When the channel geometry is modified to raise the flue gas velocity at Re = 1,000, the output power and efficiency increase by 53.5% and 25.2%, respectively.

With the coming of the era of information explosion, using Internet to obtain information has become the most convenient pipeline information flow. However, the found information mostly based on keyword matching through the search engines, and the search engines do not generally conduct filtering and screening in order to enhance the returns. If the web pages pass a systematic arrangement and are divided into multiple categories or clusters, the users will be guided to obtain real help of information. In this paper, we propose an adaptive web pages clustering algorithm to perform this task. It extracts features to reduce feature dimensions, then filters automatically web pages into its appropriate cluster and enhances the features of the pages to site features for different coefficients to improve the effect. Finally, providing users a more accurate search data model. The experimental results show that compared to the traditional TF-IDF, the proposed approach can find the needed web pages and the topics of the web pages in the corresponding cluster that are highly similar.

It’s hard to overcome the difference between schools of different level. That’s the reason why the philosophy and framework of the curriculum could be accepted by the majority is worthy of being discussed and deliberated.The main purpose of this study is to analysis the concept and background of every vision of the practice-skill-program guidelines. By doing this, we want to find out a suitable philosophy and framework of the curriculum, it could to adapt to different political and economic environments, social needs and industrial structures.

Text classification technologies rely heavily on the distribution of features, and the selection of discriminant features with regards to the classes as the main basis for classification. In this paper, we propose the discriminant coefficient to represent the features of a document. Based on the discriminant coefficient, the classification coefficient for each document class is defined and computed. Then, a correlation measure approach is designed for text classification. The experimental results show that the proposed approach of document analysis has good effectiveness in comparison with the method of TF-IDF with cosine similarity for a single class text classification. Especially, as a document set with nearly equivalent number of documents for each class, the proposed approach can achieve better results than the traditional vector based methods.

To investigate the relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection and the expressions of the p53, Rb, c-myc, bcl-2 and hTERT mRNA in a series of diseases from chronic gastritis (CG), intestinal metaplasia type I or II(IMI-II), intestinal metaplasia type III (IMIII), mild or modest dysplasia (DysI-II), severe dysplasia (DysIII) to gastric cancer(GC) and to elucidate the mechanism of gastric carcinogenesis relating to H.pylori infection.272 cases between 1998 and 2001 were available for the study including 42 cases of CG, 46 cases of IMI-II, 25 cases of IMIII, 48 cases of DysI-II, 27 cases of DysIII, 84 cases of GC. H.pylori infection and the expressions of p53, Rb, c-myc, bcl-2 were detected by means of streptavidin-peroxidase (SP) immunohistochemical method. HTERT mRNA was detected by in situ hybridization (ISH).The expressions of p53, Rb, c-myc, hTERT mRNA and bcl-2 were higher in the GC than in CG, IM, Dys. The expression of c-myc was higher in IMIII with H.pylori infection (10/16) than that without infection (1/9) and the positive rate in DysI-II and DysIII with H.pylori infection was 18/30 and 13/17, respectively, higher than that without infection (4/18 and 3/10, respectively). In our experiment mutated p53 had no association with H.pylori infection, the expression of Rb was associated with H.pylori infection in GC, but the p53-Rb tumor-suppressor system abnormal in DysI-II cases, DysIII and GC cases with H.pylori infection was 21/30, 15/17 and 48/48 respectively, higher than non-infection groups (4/18, 3/10, 28/36). Furthermore the level of hTERT mRNA in GC with H.pylori infection (47/48) was higher than that without infection (30/36), however the relationship between bcl-2 and H.pylori was only in IMIII. C-myc had a close association with hTERT mRNA in DysIII and GC (P=0.0 253,0.0 305 respectively).In the gastric carcinogenesis, H.pylori might cause the severe imbalance of proliferation and apoptosis in the precancerous lesions (IMIII and GysIII) first, leading to p53-Rb tumor-suppressor system mutation and telomerase reactivation, and finally causes gastric cancer.

The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of implementing inquiry-based instruction on science-learning motivation and interest. The participants included students from three high schools located north, west, and south of Taiwan. The results showed that after participating in the implementation of inquiry-based instruction, science learning motivation and interest were both increased. Among them, School A achieved the best learning effect. Significant variation was observed in terms of self-efficacy and performance goals with regard to learning motivation; considerable differences in learning interests were also seen with respect to attitude towards science, learning atmosphere, learning difficulties, and learning commitment.
