Superoxide production by the phagocyte reduced NAD phosphate (NADPH) oxidase is essential for innate immunity as shown in chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), an immunodeficiency disease resulting from mutations in 1 of its genes. The NADPH oxidase is composed of 2 membrane proteins (gp91phox/NOX2 and p22phox) and 4 cytosolic proteins (p47phox, p67phox, p40phox, and Rac1/2). The phosphorylation of p47phox is required for NADPH oxidase activation in cells. As p47phox and p67phox can form a tight complex in cells, we hypothesized that p67phox could regulate p47phox phosphorylation. To investigate this hypothesis, we used phospho-specific antibodies against 5 major p47phox-phosphorylated sites (Ser304, Ser315, Ser320, Ser328, and Ser345) and neutrophils from healthy donors and from p67phox−/− CGD patients. Results showed that formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine and phorbol myristate acetate induced a time- and a concentration-dependent phosphorylation of p47phox on Ser304, Ser315, Ser320, and Ser328 in healthy human neutrophils. Interestingly, in neutrophils and Epstein-Barr virus-transformed B lymphocytes from p67phox−/− CGD patients, phosphorylation of p47phox on serine residues was dramatically reduced. In COSphox cells, the presence of p67phox led to increased phosphorylation of p47phox. In vitro studies showed that recombinant p47phox was phosphorylated on Ser304, Ser315, Ser320, and Ser328 by different PKC isoforms and the addition of recombinant p67phox alone or in combination with p40phox potentiated this process. Thus, p67phox and p40phox are required for optimal p47phox phosphorylation on Ser304, Ser315, Ser320, and Ser328 in intact cells. Therefore, p67phox and p40phox are novel regulators of p47phox-phosphorylation.

Objectives: To investigate the association between dietary purine intake and mortality among Chinese adults. Methods: Based on data from the 2004–2015 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) and the corresponding edition of China Food Composition, the average purine intake per day (mg/day) from 2004 to 2011 was calculated, and the surveyed population was divided into five groups by quintiles. The outcome event and timepoint of concern were defined as death and time, respectively, as reported by family members, recorded until the 2015 survey. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for death. The possibly nonlinear relationship between purine intake and mortality was examined with restricted cubic splines. Results: We included 17,755 subjects, and the average purine intake among them was 355.07 ± 145.32 mg/day. Purine intake was inversely associated with mortality (Ptrend < 0.001). Compared with the lowest quintiles of purine intake, the highest quintiles (HR = 0.60; 95% CI: 0.46, 0.77) showed a significant association with lower mortality. The negative association with mortality was mainly found in plant-derived purine (Ptrend = 0.001) and, weakly, in animal-derived purine (Ptrend = 0.052). In addition, a U-shaped relationship between purine intake and mortality was observed in males; however, there was no statistically significant dose–response relationship in females. Conclusion: Considering the low-purine-intake levels of the Chinese population, we observed a U-shaped relationship between purine intake and mortality in males, but purine intake may not relate to mortality in females. Future studies should investigate the causal relationship between purine intake and disease burden in China.

The growth of renewable energy generation has necessitated electric energy storage (EES) systems. Batteries are the most promising small-scale EES system, given their portability, quick response time, and high compatibility with electrical devices. We present a thermally assisted K/Zn ion hybrid battery for high roundtrip efficiency. The battery contains a copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCFe) cathode and a zinc metal anode with a discharging voltage of 1.75 V in a K/Zn ion hybrid aqueous electrolyte. The battery's roundtrip efficiency improved by 2.1-4.5% when cycled between 10 and 30 °C. Its discharging voltage and temperature coefficient improved dramatically when the K ion was replaced with a Rb ion. The proposed thermally assisted battery cycle can be used with various conventional batteries to reduce EES energy loss during charge/discharge cycles. Background Multicenter randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and several meta-analyses have confirmed that laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) is a safe and feasible procedure for patients with locally advanced gastric cancer (AGC) in terms of short-term outcomes. However, the long-term oncological outcomes of LG for AGC are still needed for further evaluation. This study aimed to compare the long-term oncological outcomes of LG with open gastrectomy (OG) for patients with AGC. Methods We performed a systematic literature search in various databases from January 1997 to August 2018. Studies comparing the long-term oncological outcomes between LG with OG were evaluated and data were extracted accordingly. We performed the meta-analysis using RevMan 5.3 software. Results Fifteen studies with 4494 patients (2273 in LG group and 2221 in OG group) were included. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rate (HR 0.95, 95% CI 0.86 to 1.05, P = 0.28), disease-free survival (DFS) rate (HR 0.93, 95% CI 0.81 to 1.06, P = 0.27), and recurrence rate (OR 0.87, 95% CI 0.72 to 1.04, P = 0.13) were comparable in LG and OG. Subgroup analysis showed the publication year, study region, sample size, extent of resection, extent of lymphadenectomy, retrieved lymph nodes, proportion of stage III, and patients with serosa-positive (pT4a) did not influence the estimates. Conclusions For patients with AGC, LG is a feasible surgical procedure alternative to OG in terms of long-term oncological outcomes.

The effect of maternal folate intake on small-for-gestational-age (SGA) births remains inconclusive. The present study aimed to investigate the associations of maternal folate intake from diet and supplements with the risk of SGA births using data from a cross-sectional study in Shaanxi Province of Northwest China. A total of 7307 women who were within 12 months (median 3; 10th–90th percentile 0–7) after delivery were included. Two-level models were adopted to examine the associations of folate (dietary folate, supplemental folic acid and total folate) intake with the risk of SGA births and birth weight Z score, controlling for a minimum set of confounders that were identified in a directed acyclic graph. Results showed that a higher supplemental folic acid intake during the first trimester was negatively associated with the risk of SGA births (≤60 d v. non-use: OR 0·80; 95 % CI 0·66, 0·96; >60 d v. non-use: OR 0·78; 95 % CI 0·65, 0·94; Ptrend = 0·010; per 10-d increase: OR 0·97; 95 % CI 0·95, 0·99). A higher total folate intake during pregnancy was associated with a reduced risk of SGA births (highest tertile v. lowest tertile: OR 0·77; 95 % CI 0·64, 0·94; Ptrend = 0·010; per one-unit increase in the log-transformed value: OR 0·81; 95 % CI 0·69, 0·95). A similar pattern was observed for the birth weight Z score. Our study suggested that folic acid supplementation during the first trimester and a higher total folate intake during pregnancy were associated with a reduced risk of SGA births.

BackgroundThe China Northwest Cohort study (CNC), a community population-based prospective observational study, aimed to investigate specific aetiology causes of NCDs and the long-term health hazards of NCDs in the northwest region of China with different ethnic groups.Study design and methodsA total of 118,572 participants (aged 35–74 years and including the Han, Uygur, Kazakh, Hui and Tibetan ethnic groups from five provinces of northwest China) were recruited between June 2018 and May 2019. Approximately 10% of the participants will be actively followed every 3 years via face-to-face interviews with the use of concise questionnaires to review risk exposures and disease incidence, as well as to review biological specimens, including blood, saliva and stool samples, which will be collected. Passive follow-ups will be conducted by periodic linking (every 6 months) of baseline survey data to establish electronic disease registries. The questionnaire survey, a regular medical examination and the storage of blood samples were conducted in the CNC baseline survey for all of the participants. Several other items from the medical examination were recorded for approximately 40% of the participants.DiscussionAmong the total participants, the proportions of Han, Uygur, Kazakh, Hui and Tibetan ethnicities were 75.3%, 13.0%, 1.7%, 8.2% and 1.3%, respectively. Many lifestyle and medical history factors were different across the ethnic groups. The genetic information from the multi-ethnic individuals, combined with abundant personal and environmental information, provided an important opportunity to reveal complex and specific mechanisms of the genetic and environmental factors associated with NCDs.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is a strong cause of global cancer mortality. Nucleotide excision repair (NER) can modulate platinum-based chemotherapeutic efficacy by removing drug-produced DNA damage. Some studies have found a link between excision repair cross complementation group 1 (ERCC1) rs2298881, one gene in NER pathway, and response to chemotherapy. However, the results have been disputed. Methods: We conducted a meta-analysis to reevaluate the association between polymorphisms of NER gene (ERCC1 rs2298881) and the clinical outcomes in gastric cancer patients receiving platinum-based chemotherapy. Searching PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure, 2 independent searchers found all pertinent literatures up to May 1, 2021. We enrolled studies according to consistent selection criteria, extracted and vitrified data. Crude odds ratios (ORs) and hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were applied to evaluate the effect of ERCC1 rs2298881 on patients treated by platinum-based chemotherapy. Results: By the data gathered from 6 independent studies, 1940 cases diagnosed with gastric cancer and treated with chemotherapy were included, containing 1208 Good-Responders and 732 Poor-Responders. With a comprehensive meta-analysis, we found that the patients with ERCC1 rs2298881A allele had a worse response to chemotherapy than those who with rs2298881C allele under allelic model (A vs C), with the pooled OR of 0.780 (95% CI: 0.611–0.996, P = .046). And our analysis indicated that AA genotype was associated with unfavorable overall survival (HR = 1.540, 95% CI = 1.106–2.144, P = .011) compared with CC genotype. Conclusions: ERCC1 rs2298881 is suggested as a marker of clinical outcome in gastric cancer patients treated by platinum-based chemotherapy.

To compare the surgical and long-term survival outcomes of laparoscopic and open total gastrectomy (OTG) for locally advanced gastric cancer (AGC). We retrospectively evaluated 308 and 900 patients in pathological locally AGC who underwent laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) or OTG between June 2008 and December 2014. We compared surgical and long-term outcomes between the two groups using propensity score matching method. The LTG group showed a longer operation time (261.42 vs. 171.00 min, P = 0.001), less blood loss (185.47 vs. 217.84 ml, P = 0.000), earlier time to first flatus (3.47 vs. 4.12 days, P = 0.000), earlier time to start liquid diet (3.76 vs. 4.27 days, P = 0.000), and shorter postoperative hospital stay (7.56 vs. 8.22 days, P = 0.007). The overall complication rate was 15.2% in the LTG group and 17.2% in the OTG (P = 0.503). No significant difference was observed in overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) between LTG and OTG (60.5% vs. 57.1%, P = 0.337; 57.4% vs. 54.4%, P = 0.341). Compared to OTG, LTG provides surgical benefits and comparable survival outcomes for patients with locally AGC.

Background Increasing numbers of studies have shown that postoperative complication is a negative predictor of long-term survival outcomes in various malignancies. However, the impact of severity of complications on long-term survival for patients with gastric cancer still remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the severity of complications and long-term survival outcomes after laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) for advanced gastric cancer (AGC). Methods The study analyzed 571 patients with AGC who underwent LTG in a single institution between April 2008 and June 2015. Patients were divided into two groups based on the occurrence or absence of postoperative complications which were recorded using the Clavien–Dindo (C-D) classification. Long-term survival outcomes were compared between groups in the propensity score-matched cohort. Results The groups were well balanced after the propensity score matched. The complication (C) group was associated with decreased 5-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) (65.1% vs. 76.2%, P =0.049). Subgroup analysis showed that the severe complication (C-D grade > II) group was associated with decreased 5-year overall survival (OS) (46.3% vs. 65.9%, P = 0.042) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) (53.7% vs. 74.4%, P = 0.030). However, a comparative analysis of 5-year OS and CCS showed no significant differences between the minor complication (C-D grade II) group and matched NC group (68.9% vs. 72.2%, P = 0.578; 75.6% vs. 77.8%, P = 0.649; respectively). Multivariate analysis confirmed severe complication was an independent risk factor for decreased OS. Further analysis showed that older age, lower body mass index (BMI), and combined resection were independent risk factor for the occurrence of severe complications. Conclusions Severe complications adversely affected long-term survival outcomes after LTG with D2 lymph node dissection for AGC. More attention should be paid to patients at high risk for severe complications in preoperative assessment and postoperative management.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols or laparoscopic technique has been applied in various surgical procedures. However, the clinical efficacy of combination of the two methods still remains unclear. Thus, our aim was to assess the role of ERAS protocols in laparoscopic abdominal surgery. We performed a systematic literature search in various databases from January 1990 to October 2017. The results were analyzed according to predefined criteria. In the present meta-analysis, the outcomes of 34 comparative studies (15 randomized controlled studies and 19 non-randomized controlled studies) enrolling 3615 patients (1749 in the ERAS group and 1866 in the control group) were pooled. ERAS group was associated with shorter hospital stay (WMD − 2.37 days; 95% CI − 3.00 to − 1.73; P 0.000) and earlier time to first flatus (WMD − 0.63 days; 95% CI − 0.90 to − 0.36; P 0.000). Meanwhile, lower overall postoperative complication rate (OR 0.62; 95% CI 0.51–0.76; P 0.000) and less hospital cost (WMD 801.52 US dollar; 95% CI − 918.15 to − 684.89; P 0.000) were observed in ERAS group. Similar readmission rate (OR 0.73, 95% CI 0.52–1.03, P 0.070) and perioperative mortality (OR 1.33; 95% CI 0.53–3.34; P 0.549) were found between the two groups. ERAS protocol for laparoscopic abdominal surgery is safe and effective. ERAS combined with laparoscopic technique is associated with faster postoperative recovery without increasing readmission rate and perioperative mortality.

However, few studies have evaluated the outcomes of RG for advanced gastric cancer (AGC). Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the short-and long-term outcomes of RG and laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) with D2 lymph node dissection for AGC. Patients and methods: We retrospectively evaluated 454 patients with AGC who underwent RG or LG with D2 lymph node dissection for AGC between August 2013 and March 2017. The short-and long-term outcomes were compared between the propensity score-matched groups. Results: The RG group was associated with longer operation time, less intraoperative blood loss, and higher hospital cost. Additionally, there was a tendency favoring RG in terms of number of harvested lymph nodes, time to first flatus, time to first start diet, and postoperative hospital stay, although the differences were not statistically significant. The overall postoperative complication rate was 13.4% and 11.6% in the RG and LG groups, respectively, with no significant difference (P=0.686). The 3-year overall survival and recurrence rates of the RG and LG groups were also comparable (78.6% vs 74.1%, P=0.483; 18.8% vs 21.4%, P=0.617; respectively). Conclusion: RG with D2 lymph node dissection is safe and feasible for AGC in terms of both short- and long-term outcomes. BACKGROUND Salt sensitivity of blood pressure (SSBP) increases the risk of cardiovascular complications, and the heritability of SSBP is about 50% in Chinese population. However, studies identifying genes involved in BP responses to acute sodium loading and diuresis shrinkage are still limited. METHOD A total of 342 essential hypertensives from Beijing were recruited in our study. A modified Sullivan’s acute oral saline load and diuresis shrinkage test was conducted to each individual. Medical history and lifestyle risk factors were obtained by questionnaire. Generalized linear model was used to examine the associations of 29 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with SSBP and false discovery rate (FDR) was used to correct P values for multiple testing. RESULTS In the process of acute sodium loading, after adjusting for age and 24-hour urinary sodium concentration, SNPs in CYP11B2, PRKG1, SLC8A1 genes were significantly associated with systolic BP (SBP) rising in the additive and recessive model; SNPs in CYP4A11, PRKG1, SLC8A1, and ADRB2 genes were significantly associated with diastolic BP (DBP) rising. In the process of diuresis shrinkage, SNPs of CLCNKA, eNOS, PRKG1 gene were associated with SBP and DBP decreasing. After FDR correction, rs434082 in SLC8A1 gene was still significantly associated with blood pressure rising during salt load. In the additive model, A allele increased DBP of 2.8 mm Hg (FDR_q = 0.029) and MAP of 3.1 mm Hg (FDR_q = 0.029) after adjusting for age and 24-hour urinary sodium concentration. CONCLUSION SLC8A1 gene may contribute to BP change in the process of acute sodium loading in a Han Chinese population.

Association between the xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group F (XPF)rs2276466 located in the excision repair cross complementation group 4 (ERCC4) gene and cancer susceptibility has been widely investigated. However, results thus far have remained controversial. A meta-analysis was performed to identify the impact of this polymorphism on cancer susceptibility. PubMed, Embase and Science-Web databases were searched systematically up to May 20, 2018, to obtain all the records evaluating the association between the rs2276466 polymorphism and the risk of all types of cancers. We used the odds ratio (OR) as a measure of effect, and pooled the data in a Mantel-Haenszel weighed random-effects meta-analysis to provide a summary estimate of the impact of this polymorphism on gastrointestinal cancer, neurogenic cancer and other cancers (breast cancer and SCCHN). All the analyses were carried out in STATA 14.1.11 case–control studies that consisted of 5730 cases and 6756 controls, were eventually included in our meta-analysis. It is still remains unclear whether high-risk patients with gastric cancer can benefit from the application of laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG). The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the surgical and long-term outcomes after LG and open gastrectomy (OG) for high-risk patients with gastric cancer.We performed a systematic literature search in various databases from January 1994 to June 2018. Patients who had≥1 of the following conditions were defined as high-risk patients: (1) age≥70 years; (2) BMI≥30 kg/mIn the present meta-analysis, the outcomes of 12 non-randomized controlled studies enrolling 1651 patients (873 in the LG group and 778 in the OG group) were pooled. The estimated blood loss was significantly lower in the LG group than those in the OG group (P 0.01). There was no significant difference between two groups in operative time (P = 0.17) and number of harvested lymph nodes (P = 0.21). In the LG group, the time to flatus (P 0.01), time to food intake (P 0.01), and postoperative hospital stay (P 0.01) were significantly shorter than those in the OG group. A lower overall postoperative complication rate was observed in the LG group (P 0.01). The incidence of surgical (P 0.01) and non-surgical (P 0.01) complication was significantly lower in the LG group than that in the OG group. The pooled analysis showed no significant difference in overall survival (OS) between LG and OG groups (P = 0.98).LG can be a safe and feasible procedure for high-risk patients with gastric cancer.

Copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCFe) is proved to be a potential cathode for potassium ion and sodium ion storage in aqueous system recently. However, its ability for lithium ion storage has not been well studied. Here, we synthesized CuHCFe by a low-cost and scalable co-precipitation method, and its electrochemical behavior as the cathode for lithium ion storage was investigated both in aqueous and organic systems. The CuHCFe electrode shows larger capacity and better rate capability in organic system compared with the performance in aqueous system. In addition, the capacity has 88% retention after 500 cycles. We further analyzed the strain generated during lithium ion intercalation by ex-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) method in both types of electrolyte. The lattice of CuHCFe shows shrinkage with ion intercalation in both systems. The measured strains are 0.70% and 0.83% in aqueous and organic system, respectively. The results indicate that the large open framework and small strain are the essential factors for the promising electrochemical performance. The relationships between iron nutritional status and congenital heart defects (CHDs) among humans are still unclear. This study aimed to explore the associations of maternal iron intake during pregnancy and maternal and neonatal iron status with CHDs.This hospital-based case-control study analyzed 474 cases and 948 controls in Shaanxi China. Eligible women waiting for delivery in the hospital were interviewed to report their diets and characteristics during pregnancy. We conveniently collected maternal blood before delivery and neonatal cord blood to get a subgroup of 50 cases and 100 controls. Mixed logistic regression models were used to estimate ORs (95%CIs) for CHDs associated with iron intake. Mixed linear regression models were used to assess the relationships between CHDs and iron status.Mothers whose fetuses have CHDs were less likely to have higher intakes of total iron and heme iron during pregnancy, and the tests for linear trend were significant (all P 0.05). Mothers whose fetuses have CHDs were less likely to take iron supplements during pregnancy (OR = 0.28, 95%CI: 0.21, 0.36) and during the first trimester (OR = 0.32, 95%CI: 0.12, 0.84). Maternal SF and Hb concentrations before delivery were lower and maternal sTfR/SF before delivery was higher among the cases than the controls.Mothers whose fetuses have CHDs are less likely to have higher intakes of total iron and heme iron and take iron supplements during pregnancy compared to their counterparts. Maternal iron status before delivery is low among mothers whose fetuses have CHDs.

Background To date, it has been unclear whether laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) is suitable for patients with serosa-positive (pT4a) gastric cancer. The purpose of this study was to compare the surgical and long-term oncologic outcomes of LG and open gastrectomy for pT4a gastric cancer. Methods We prospectively collected data from 987 patients with pathological confirmed pT4a gastric cancer who underwent LG or OG at our institution between June 2009 and May 2015. A 1:1 matched propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was performed to reduce confounding bias. The primary outcome was 5-year overall survival (OS). Results After PSM, a well-balanced cohort of 202 pairs patients was analyzed. The LG group showed a longer operation time (261.42 vs. 171.00 min, P = 0.001), less blood loss (185.47 vs. 217.84 ml, P = 0.000), and shorter postoperative hospital stay (7.56 vs. 8.22 days, P = 0.007). The overall complication rate was 14.4% in the LG group and 16.3% in the OG group (P = 0.581). The minor (grade II) and severe (grade ≥ IIIa) complication rates were similar (LG, 6.9% vs. OG, 9.9%, P = 0.282; LG, 7.4% vs. OG, 6.4%, P = 0.695, respectively). The LG and OG groups showed similar survival 5-year OS and 5-year Disease-free survival (DFS) rates (44.6% vs. 42.1%, P = 0.403; 40.1 vs. 37.6%, P = 0.321, respectively). The recurrence rate and pattern did not differ between the two groups during the follow-up stage (P > 0.05). Conclusions For patients with pT4a gastric cancer, LG with D2 lymph node dissection can be a safe and feasible procedure in terms of surgical and long-term oncologic outcomes.

Background: Epilepsy is a major neurological disorder that affects approximately 65 million people worldwide. Globally, the burden of epilepsy is not evenly distributed, with more than 80% of sufferers residing in low- and middle-income countries. This study estimates the burden of epilepsy in mainland China from 1990 to 2015 and explores the variations of burden by age and gender.Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the peer-reviewed literature from 1990 to 2015 using Chinese and English academic databases (CNKI, WanFang, VIP and PubMed) to identify population-based prospective studies on the prevalence of epilepsy in mainland Chinese. Multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression was used to estimate the prevalence of lifetime epilepsy (LTE), and restricted cubic regression splines were applied to model the functional forms of the non-linear effects of age and LTE prevalence. Random-effect meta-analysis was used to obtain the pooled prevalence of 1-year active epilepsy (AE), 2-year AE and 5-year AE separately. To estimate the number of people with LTE and AE in the years 1990, 2000, and 2015, LTE and AE prevalence were multiplied by the total population of mainland China of the corresponding year.Findings: Analyses were conducted using 39 prevalence studies that met the inclusion criteria and comprised 77 separate data points (37 on LTE, 16 on 1-year AE, 12 on 2-year AE and 12 on 5-year AE). In 1990, the prevalence of LTE ranged from 1.31‰ (95% CI = 0.85-2.00) in the 0-4 age group to 2.42‰ (95% confidence interval CI = 1.60-3.65) in the 30-34 age group. By 2015, the LTE prevalence had increased to 4.57‰ (95% CI = 2.52-8.27) in the 0-4 group and 8.43‰ (95% CI = 4.71-15.04) in the 30-34 group. Over the 25-year period, the overall prevalence of LTE had steadily increased by 259%, from 1.99‰ (95% CI = 1.31-3.02) in 1990 to 7.15‰ (95% CI = 3.98-12.82) in 2015. The rates of increase were similar across the whole age spectrum, fluctuating around 250%. Between 1990 and 2015, the total number of people with LTE in mainland China increased by 328%, from 2.30 million (95% CI = 1.51-3.49) in 1990 to 9.84 million (95% CI = 5.48-17.64) in 2015. The pooled 1-year, 2-year, and 5-year AE prevalence were 3.79‰ (95% CI = 3.31-4.34), 4.08‰ (95% CI = 3.41-4.89) and 4.19‰ (95% CI = 3.42-5.15).Conclusions: The burden of LTE in China has increased substantially between 1990 and 2015, with the prevalence of LTE having more than doubled and the number of people with LTE more than tripled. The large amount of AE cases in China calls for optimal management and treatment. More high-quality epidemiological studies on LTE and AE prevalence are still needed.

Scallop mantle (Chlamys Farreri) was hydrolysed with commercially available food-grade mixed proteases. The resulting hydrolysates of scallop protein hydrolyzate contained high levels of Glu, Gly, Asp, Arg, Ala, and Pro, and showed DPPH, hydroxyl radicals scavenging abilities, and reducing power. In this study scallop protein hydrolyzate had angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory activity in vitro with an IC50 of 10.28 mg/ml. It was also found that oral administration of scallop protein hydrolyzate decreased total serum cholesterol and triglyceride, and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in rats fed with high-fat diet. The above results indicate that scallop protein hydrolyzate may prove to be a promising functional agent for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, and other cardiovascular diseases.

The active oyster peptides (AOPs) in enzymatic hydrolyzed oyster protein product have been determinated by gel column chromatogrphy. They were investigated to determine their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Three commercial food-grade proteases were used to hydrolyze the oyster. Among the three hydrolysates, alcalase hydrolysate exerted the highest scavenging activity against a,a-diphenyl-b-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) for use in oyster hydrolysis. The optimum parameters for hydrolysis using alcalase were established by the single-factor and orthogonal tests. Under these conditions, the highest degree of hydrolysis (DH) was 39.89%. Antioxidants of protein hydrolysates at 30.12, 32.69, 38.47 and 39.89% of DH were further investigated by the evaluation of DPPH and hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity. The resulting AOPs' antibacterial activities against some pathogenic microorganisms, including human pathogenic bacteria and marine Vibrio species, were investigated using the agar diffusion method. The results showed interesting antimicrobial potentials against the tested microorganisms, except Vibrio anguillarum. The highest DH of AOPs exhibited a higher antimicrobial potential than lower DH. Practical Applications Rushan oyster (Crassostrea gigas), with high production in China, is still underutilized despite the fact that it is rich in high quality protein. Oyster protein hydrolysates have been shown to have potential for nutritional or pharmaceutical applications. The aims of this study were to prepare peptides from Rushan oyster by enzymatic hydrolysis and to evaluate the antimicrobial capacity and antioxidant activity of the resulting hydrolysate. The hydrolysis of protein with proteolytic enzymes can provide more marketable and value-added food ingredients or industrial products.

The outcome of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection and course to AIDS are variable among individuals. Both chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) and CCR2 gene polymorphisms play essential roles in the susceptibility of HIV-1 infection. To investigate the main and epistatic effects of the CCR5 promoter and CCR2-V64I polymorphisms on HIV-1 infection in the Northern Han Chinese, subjects of 91 HIV-1-infected patients and 91 health controls were recruited. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the CCR5 promoter region and CCR2-V64I variants were genotyped. In the single-locus analysis, CCR5 58755-G and CCR5 59653-T alleles were significantly associated with HIV-1 infection (odds ratio [OR]=0.529, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.295-0.948; OR=1.710, 95% CI: 1.039-2.814). After adjustment with age and gender, subjects with the CCR5 59653-CT genotype showed the increased risk of HIV-1 infection compared with those with the wild-type CC genotype (adjusted OR=2.502; 95% CI: 1.332-4.698). No positive association was observed in other SNPs. Haplotype-based association analysis revealed that the haplotype TATGC was associated with the susceptibility to HIV-1 infection (p=0.003). Besides, we found the significant epistatic effects between the CCR5 58755-A/G and CCR5 59029-A/G polymorphisms associated with the lower risk of HIV-1 infection. In addition, we also identified the best three-factor interaction model, including the CCR5 58755-A/G, 59029-A/G, and CCR2-V64I polymorphisms, indicating that there were also strong gene-gene interactions between the CCR5 promoter and CCR2 polymorphisms on the susceptibility of HIV-1 infection. These findings contribute to understanding the genetic mechanism for the susceptibility of HIV-1 infection in Northern Han Chinese.

Low-grade heat to electricity conversion has shown a large potential for sustainable energy supply. Recently, the low-grade heat harvesting in the thermally regenerative electrochemical cycle (TREC) is a promising candidate with high energy conversion efficiency. In this system, the electrochemical temperature coefficient (α) plays a dominant role in efficient heat harvesting. However, the internal factors that affect α are still not clear and significant improvements are needed. Here, α of various Prussian Blue analogues (PBAs) is investigated and their lattice change during cation intercalation is monitored using the ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. For the first time, it is found that α is highly related to the lattice parameter change. Large lattice shrinkage exhibits a large negative α, while lattice expansion is corresponding to a positive α. These are mainly attributed to the different phonon vibration entropy changes upon cation intercalation in various PBAs. Especially, purple cobalt hexacynoferrate delivers the largest α of −0.89 mV K−1 and enables highly efficient heat conversion efficiency up to 2.65% (21% of relative efficiency). The results of this study provide a fundamental understanding of temperature coefficient in electrochemical reactions and pave the way for designing high-performance material for low-grade heat harvesting.
