In Spain, wheelchair basketball competition is well developed and structured; however, reverse integration is not allowed. This study aimed to describe and synthesize the perceptions of Spanish wheelchair stakeholders (players, coaches, referees, and club managers). A mixed-method approach was used, utilizing an ad hoc survey questionnaire (n = 49) and three focus groups (n = 12). Quantitative and qualitative data were interpreted using a triangulation strategy, meaning that both sources of data were combined and analyzed. From the thematic content analysis, two main themes and several subthemes emerged: social context (audience attraction and economic impact, utility and logistics, and promoting inclusion) and sport context (grassroots and elite level). Some reservations at elite level were also reported. From the perspective of the stakeholders explored in this study, reverse integration appears to be well suited for implementation within the Spanish wheelchair basketball framework at all levels.

The purpose was to synthesize information gathered from the interpretation and conclusion sections of the Global Matrix of Para Report Cards on the physical activity of children and adolescents with disabilities. The synthesis was based on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats framework. The procedure consisted of three stages: (a) the application of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health as the theoretical framework; (b) identifying and aligning Global Matrix indicators and benchmarks with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health components through a Delphi approach; and (c) using content analysis to identify themes from specific report cards. Outcomes reveal that further attention toward including children and adolescents with disabilities in fitness assessments is needed as well as adapted assessment methods. Program availability, equipment and facilities, and professional training emerged as strengths but need further development to overcome weaknesses. Paralympic inspiration was an opportunity, whereas extreme weather conditions presented potential threats to physical activity participation among children and adolescents with disabilities.

This is an overview of the results from 14 countries or jurisdictions in a Global Matrix of Para Report Cards on physical activity (PA) of children and adolescents with disabilities. The methodology was based on the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance’s Global Matrix 4.0. Data were aligned with 10 indicators (Overall PA, Organized Sport, Active Play, Active Transport, Physical Fitness, Sedentary Behavior, Family & Peers, Schools, Community & Environment, and Government) to produce Para Report Cards. Subsequently, there were 139 grades; 45% were incomplete, particularly for Active Play, Physical Fitness, and Family & Peers. Collectively, Overall PA was graded the lowest (F), with Schools and Government the highest (C). Disability-specific surveillance and research gaps in PA were apparent in 14 countries or jurisdictions around the world. More coverage of PA data in Para Report Cards is needed to serve as an advocacy tool to promote PA among children and adolescents with disabilities.

Children and adolescents with disabilities (CAWD) represent 11% of Israeli children and adolescents. The 10 core indicators of the Global Matrix on Para Report Cards of physical activity (PA) of CAWD were used to create the 2022 Israeli Para Report Card. A panel of four experts reviewed resources and synthesized evidence of PA behaviors and policies for CAWD in Israel, converted the data to grades, and charted subcategories of language, sex, and disability across population. Background: Physical inactivity among children and adolescents with disabilities (CAWD) is a global public health issue. Policy efforts to promote physical activity (PA) among CAWD have increased. This study summarizes the international policy trend for promoting PA among CAWD, with behavioral and policy insights specific to CAWD from country/regional indicators from the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance Matrix on Physical Activity for Children and Adolescents to determine policy translation into practice. Methods: International and national PA policy documents on CAWD were assessed. Data from the Global Matrix Para Report Cards on the behavioral and government indicators from 14 countries or regions (grouped by human development index) were reviewed and compared. Results: Policy instruments began promoting PA for CAWD in 1989 via the Convention on the Rights of the Child. International policy has been advocating PA specifically for CAWD recently. In 2020, the World Health Organization published specific PA guidelines for CAWD. Data from the 14 Para Report Car found 14 grades on the average behavioral indicator and 12 on the government indicator. A gap between the average behavioral indicator (D−) and the government indicator (C+) was found in the Para Report Card data. Conclusions: Although international policies are consistent in their attention to the needs of CAWD, national/regional policies vary. Coverage ranges from nonexistent to embedded in broader inclusion concepts. A gap in policies to promote PA of CAWD is prevalent and is more prominent in countries or regions with a lower human development index ranking.

The study’s purpose was to examine the prevalence of sedentary screen time behaviour and physical activity (PA) participation, and their association with environmental (socioeconomic status, bullying behaviours) and personal factors (age, sex). We analysed data from the 2013–14 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey among Israeli adolescents aged 11–17 [N = 4,241; 56% female; 9.3% = adolescents with disability (AWD)]. A minority ( 30% of AWD and adolescents without disability engaged in sedentary screen time >3 hours/day. In conclusion, AWD in grades 6 and 8 should be given specific attention, to reduce the likelihood of bullying at school and to increase the inclusion of AWD in PA lessons.

Purpose:The comparison of habitual physical activity and sedentary time in teenagers and young adults with cerebral palsy (CP) with typically developed (TD) peers can serve to quantify activity shortcomings.Methods:Patterns of sedentary, upright, standing, and walking components of habitual physical activity were compared in age-matched (16.8 y) groups of 54 youths with bilateral spastic CP (38 who walk with limitations and 16 who require mobility devices) and 41 TD youths in the Middle East. Activity and sedentary behavior were measured over 96 hours by activPAL3 physical activity monitors.Results:Participants with CP spent more time sedentary (8%) and sitting (37%) and less time standing (20%) and walking (40%) than TD (allPs 2 h) and significantly fewer upright events (taking 60 min) and less total upright time than TD.Conclusion:Ambulant participants with CP, as well as TD youth must be encouraged to take more breaks from being sedentary and include more frequent and longer upright events.

The purpose of this integrative review is to synthesize the scientific literature referring to barriers and facilitators of physical activity participation for individuals with mobility impairments. Using EBSCO and Google Scholar search engines, peer-reviewed articles published in English between 2000-2019 were screened. After extracting research-based articles focusing on participants with mobility limitations 46 articles were retrieved, including eight intervention studies. The outcomes reported in these studies were synthesized referring to theoretical approaches including the theory of reasoned action, the transtheoretical model of change, and self-efficacy theory. A thematic analysis was conducted on study contents. The following categories were constructed. (a) Personal factors, with secondary categories: personal medical condition, personal psychological perception of physical activity practice, and self-efficacy; (b) environmental factors, with secondary categories: physical environment and social environment, each of them also containing tertiary categories, and (c) interventions aimed at increasing physical activity. Practices promoting physical activity participation were recommended.

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) are often mainstreamed into the general education system, but are likely to be excluded from physical education (PE) classes. A questionnaire was constructed and utilized to measure PE teachers' self-efficacy (SE) toward inclusion of students with CP in each of three mobility categories (independent, using assistive devices, using wheelchair mobility) and the impact of experience and training on teachers' SE. Participants in the study were 121 PE teachers from different parts of Israel (mean age: 41.02±9.33 years; range: 25.00-59.00 years). Exploratory factor analysis was used to determine the structure of the sub-scales' factors' structure and Cronbach's Alpha reliability was satisfactory (range 0.872-0.941). Independent t-tests were calculated in order to compare the SE of teachers with and without adapted PE experience. In this section, inclusive physical education is discussed in the context of the development of the services for students with disabilities and the role of adapted physical education (APE) in this context in two examples of Middle East countries: Turkey and Israel. In Turkey APE has increasingly become available as an academic discipline in Turkish universities, as well as in sports federations since the year 2000. However, in spite of the academic development APE has not yet become widespread in schools, in special education or in rehabilitation centres. This may lead to an underrepresentation of this service to students with disabilities in both special and inclusive environments. Since the early 2000s, a continuous and substantial improvement in the number and quality of participation opportunities in programmes within various aspects of physical activity frameworks can be observed in Israel. Unfortunately, despite these improvements in the field of APE, still the majority of stakeholders, such as physical education teachers, sport coaches and fitness instructors, have not yet fully captured the educational and socio-cultural opportunities encountered in this area of expertise.

Wheelchair basketball is one of the most popular sport activities among persons with disabilities. The current study focuses on “reverse integration” (RI) groups of athletes with and without disabilities playing wheelchair basketball in Israel. A qualitative analysis approach was chosen to examine whether the able-bodied participants in RI wheelchair basketball training and competition identify their participation as a “serious leisure” (SL) activity, and to determine which additional insights could be gained about this activity from participants’ perspectives. Eight male able-bodied participants, who have taken part in three Israeli wheelchair basketball leagues (divisions), were interviewed. All eight participants in this study played longer than a year. The findings revealed support for the SL premise within all six SL criteria. Participation of our informants was categorized within the establishment and maintenance phases. All participants reported sustained perseverance in spite of having to deal with significant challenges, including the physical strain and mental difficulties associated with the game, coping with dual roles of participation as player and coach, and finally, having to face the same economical and social barriers typically reported by athletes with disability.

The purpose of this study was to investigate (a) the validity and reliability of the inclusive Self-efficacy Instrument for Physical Education Teacher scale (SE-PETE-D), using a Lithuanian physical education (PE) teachers’ sample, and (b) the impact of type of disability and personal attributes. The English version of the scale was translated into Lithuanian using the back-translation technique. The participants were 193 PE teachers working in Lithuanian schools (60 males and 132 females), ages between 22 and 65 years ( M = 46.47 years, SD = 9.08 years). The content and construct validity of the instrument was supported. The results of the factor analysis indicated a one-factor solution for the instrument’s intellectual disability (ID), physical disability (PD), and visual impairment (VI) subscales. Cronbach’s alpha reliability was high (ID = 0.96, PD = 0.97, and VI = 0.98). Test–retest correlation analysis showed a satisfactory coefficient (ID = 0.54, p < .05; PD = 0.75, p < .01; and VI = 0.63, p < .01; total of SE-PETE-D = 0.70, p < .01). The type of the students’ disability and the teachers’ adapted physical education (APE) training significantly influenced the teachers’ self-efficacy ( p < .05). The Lithuanian version of the SE-PETE-D appears to be a valid and reliable instrument, enabling future research on Lithuanian PE teachers.

This study addresses the associations between students' ability beliefs and attitudes toward inclusion in physical education, as well as the impact of gender and previous contact/participation with children with disability on these variables. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 976 students (491 girls and 485 boys; age 11-16 years), who responded to ability beliefs and attitudes questionnaires. Ability beliefs (entity and incremental) and the 3 sociodemographic variables predicted 20.4% and 9% of the behavioral and cognitive subscales of attitudes, respectively. Students with higher scores for entity beliefs of ability had a less favorable attitude toward inclusion. Girls reported more favorable attitudes toward inclusion than boys. Students who indicated previous participation in physical activities with children with disabilities showed attitudes that were more favorable in both the behavioral and cognitive subscales, while those who reported previous contact had more favorable attitudes in the behavioral subscale and lower entity beliefs. However, the 3 sociodemographic variables had a lower contribution to the explained variance of attitudes.

Background. Teacher’s perceptions of Self-efcacy (SE) have been suggested as an important factor in the successful inclusion of students with special educational needs. The purposes of this study were (a) to investigate the validity and reliability of the instrument of physical education teachers’ self-efcacy toward the inclusion of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (PESEISD-A), using a Lithuanian physical education (PE) teachers’ sample, and (b) to assess relationships between SE scale and subscales. Methods. The English version of the instrument was translated into Lithuanian using the back-translation technique. The participants were 368 PE teachers working in Lithuanian schools (152 males and 216 females), aged between 24 and 65 years (M = 47.09; SD = 9.06). The content and construct validity of the instrument were supported. Results. The results of the factor analysis indicated a one-factor solution for the scale’s SE. Cronbach’s alpha reliability of SE scale and all other subscales was high (α > .93). Test-retest correlation analysis showed a satisfactory coefcient. In this study, positive and signifcant relationships between SE scale, mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, physiological state, behaviour, and perceived challenges subscales were determined (p < .01). Conclusions. The Lithuanian version of the PESEISD-A appears to be a valid and reliable instrument, enabling future research on Lithuanian PE teachers. Background and PurposeFamilial dysautonomia (FD) is a rare genetic autosomal recessive disease that impairs vital functions and causes neural and motor deficiency. These motor deficits often are characterized by static and dynamic instability and an ataxic gait. As a result, people with FD are at risk for significant physical impairment and falls and pose unique challenges for delivering rehabilitation exercise. Consequently, there is a need for challenging ways to safely and feasibly deliver active exercise rehabilitation to these individuals.Case DescriptionThis case report describes 3 people with FD (ages 11, 12, and 22 years) with gait and stability problems who attended rehabilitation exercises augmented by the use of an iPhone application specifically developed for the program.OutcomesThe Berg Balance Scale and the Four Square Step Test were conducted prior to training, after training, and after 2 months of follow-up without training. Two patients showed improvements on both measures at the posttest, which were maintained throughout follow-up testing.DiscussionAlthough greater experience is needed to more fully evaluate the efficiency of the iPhone application used in this program for people with FD, the results of these initial cases are encouraging. Systematically and prospectively tracking motor abilities and other functional outcomes during rehabilitation of individuals with FD who use the suggested application in balance training is recommended in order to provide greater evidence in this area.

The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and treadmill walk tests (TMW) are commonly used to assess post-stroke patients (PSP) aerobic capacity. However, these tests are not without their limitations (e.g. limited sensitivity to change and the use of external pacing). Therefore, there is a need for additional tools to assess PSP aerobic capacity.To establish the feasibility, convergent validity, and metabolic, cardiac, and respiratory responses of a stair climbing test (SC), among chronic PSP.Nineteen chronic PSP conducted SC, TMW, and 6 MWT. Metabolic (oxygen consumption - VO₂), cardiac (heart rate), and respiratory (ventilation volume, breathing frequency, and tidal volume) measures were established. Adverse events were documented. Correlations established the convergent validity of the SC test. A repeated measures analysis of variance was performed to compare the participant's physiological responses at the end of the various tests.SC is feasible and safe, as all participants completed the test with no adverse events. The SC demonstrated convergent validity as numerous associations were found between SC and TMW, and 6 MWT. Metabolic, cardiac, and respiratory responses to the SC were significantly higher than these of the TMW and 6 MWT (e.g. VO₂= 13.43 ± 2.19, 11.01 ± 2.0, and 11.26 ± 1.87 ml/kg/min, respectively) (P 0.05).SC is a feasible and valid test within chronic PSP. SC is more metabolically demanding than TMW and 6 MW and therefore, may enable appropriate endurance capacity measurement, especially for high functioning PSP. Negotiating stairs is a common community ambulation requirement. Therefore, it is appropriate to incorporate SC test in PSP testing battery.

Background and purpose The group of individuals 85 years and over (termed oldest-old) is the fastest-growing population in the Western world. Although daily functional abilities and balance capabilities are known to decrease as an individual grows older, little is known about the balance and functional characteristics of the oldest-old population. The aims of this study were to characterize balance control, functional abilities, and balance self-efficacy in the oldest-old, to test the correlations between these constructs, and to explore differences between fallers and nonfallers in this age group. Methods Forty-five individuals living in an assisted living facility who ambulated independently participated in the study. The mean age was 90.3 (3.7) years. Function was tested using the Late-Life Function and Disability Instrument (LLFDI). Balance was tested with the mini-Balance Evaluation System Test (mini-BESTest) and the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Balance self-efficacy was tested with the Activities-Specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale. Results The mean total function LLFDI score was 63.2 (11.4). The mean mini-BESTest score was 69.8% (18.6%) and the mean TUG time was 12.6 (6.9) seconds. The mean ABC score was 80.2% (14.2%). Good correlation (r > 0.7) was observed between the ABC and the function component of the LLFDI, as well as with the lower extremity domains. Correlations between the mini-BESTest scores and the LLFDI were fair to moderate (r's range: 0.38-0.62). Age and ABC scores were significant independent explanators of LLFDI score (P = .0141 and P = .0009, respectively). Fallers and nonfallers differed significantly across all outcome measures scores, except for TUG and for the "Reactive Postural Control" and "Sensory Orientation" domains of the mini-BESTest. Discussion and conclusions The results of this study provide normative data regarding the balance and functional abilities of the oldest-old, and indicate a strong association between self-efficacy and function. These results emphasize the importance of incorporating strategies that maintain and improve balance self-efficacy in interventions aimed at enhancing the functional level of this cohort.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the Western world, and leads to impaired balance and mobility.To investigate the feasibility of using a Virtual Reality-based dual task of an upper extremity while treadmill walking, to improve gait and functional balance performance of chronic poststroke survivors.Twenty-two individuals chronic poststroke participated in the study, and were divided into 2 groups (each group performing an 8-session exercise program): 11 participated in dual-task walking (DTW), and the other 11 participated in single-task treadmill walking (TMW). The study was a randomized controlled trial, with assessors blinded to the participants' allocated group. Measurements were conducted at pretest, post-test, and follow-up. Outcome measures included: the 10-m walking test (10 mW), Timed Up and Go (TUG), the Functional Reach Test (FRT), the Lateral Reach Test Left/Right (LRT-L/R); the Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale, and the Berg Balance Scale(BBS).Improvements were observed in balance variables: BBS, FRT, LRT-L/R, (P.01) favoring the DTW group; in gait variables: 10 mW time, also favoring the DTW group (P.05); and the ABC scale (P.01). No changes for interaction were observed in the TUG.The results of this study demonstrate the potential of VR-based DTW to improve walking and balance in people after stroke; thus, it is suggested to combine training sessions that require the performance of multiple tasks at the same time.

The purpose was to validate a self-efficacy (SE) instrument toward including students with disability in physical education (PE). Three scales referring to intellectual disabilities (ID), physical disabilities (PD), or visual impairments (VI) were administered to 486 physical education teacher education (PETE) majors. The sample was randomly split, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (EFA and CFA, respectively) were conducted. After deleting items that did not meet inclusion criteria, EFA item loadings ranged from 0.53 to 0.91, and Cronbach’s alpha reliability was high (for ID = .86, PD = .90, and VI = .92). CFA showed that the ID scale demonstrated good goodness-of-fit, whereas in the PD and in the VI scales demonstrated moderate fit. Thus, the content and construct validity of the instrument was supported.

Sufficient and regular physical activity is considered a protective factor, reducing the onset of secondary disability conditions in adolescents with chronic diseases and functional limitations. The aim of this study was to explore whether participation in organized sport may be associated to higher levels of physical activity in adolescents with functional limitations, based on a national representative sample. Data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study collected in Finland from two data collection rounds (2002 and 2010) were conducted and pooled from adolescents aged between 13 and 15 years old with functional limitations (n = 1041). Differences in self-reported physical activity over the past week and participation in organized sport activity were analysed for each function. Overall, four in ten (n = 413) participated in organized sport and were significantly (p < 0.001) more physically active (mean = 4.92days, SD = 1.81) than their non-participating (mean = 3.29, SD = 1.86) peers with functional limitations. Despite low population prevalence, adolescents with epilepsy or visual impairments were the least active if they were not participating in organized sport, yet were the most active if they were involved in organized sport. Participating in organized sport appears to be an important factor promoting resources for maintaining recommended levels of physical activity in Finnish adolescents with functional limitations. peerReviewed

To describe Re-Step™, a novel mechatronic shoe system that measures center of pressure (COP) gait parameters and complexity of COP dispersion while walking, and to demonstrate these measurements in healthy controls and individuals with hemiparesis and cerebral palsy (CP) before and after perturbation training.The Re-Step™ was used to induce programmed chaotic perturbations to the feet while walking for 30 min for 36 sessions over 12-weeks of training in two subjects with hemiparesis and two with CP.Baseline measurements of complexity indices (fractal dimension and approximate entropy) tended to be higher in controls than in those with disabilities, while COP variability, mean and variability of step time and COP dispersion were lower. After training the disabled subjects these measurement values tended toward those of the controls, along with a decrease in step time, 10 m walk time, average step time, percentage of double support and increased Berg balance score.This pilot trial reveals the feasibility and applicability of this unique measurement and perturbation system for evaluating functional disabilities and changes with interventions to improve walking. Implication for Rehabilitation Walking, of individuals with cerebral palsy and hemiparesis following stroke, can be viewed in terms of a rigid motor behavior that prevents adaptation to changing environmental conditions. Re-Step system (a) measures and records linear and non-linear gait parameters during free walking to provide a detailed evaluation of walking disabilities, (b) is an intervention training modality that applies unexpected perturbations during walking. This perturbation intervention may improve gait and motor functions of individuals with hemiparesis and cerebral plasy.

The study investigated the effects of a Special Olympics (SO) Unified Sport (UNS) soccer program on anthropometry, physical fitness and soccer skills of male youth athletes with and without intellectual disabilities (ID) who participated in a training group (TRG) and in a comparison group (CG) without specific training. Youth with ID (WID) were randomly selected out of all the students between the ages 12 and 15, with a diagnosis of educable mental retardation and no secondary disabilities, who were attending a special education school. Participants without ID (WoID) were randomly selected from a regular secondary school out of the same age groups of male students. All participants were given permission by their parents or guardians to participate in the study. Participants in the TRG included 23 youth WID and 23 youth WoID. Mean ages were = 14.1 (SD = 1.1) and 13.2 (SD = 0.79) respectively. Fifteen WID, and 15 WoID comprised the CG. Mean ages were 14.51 (SD = 0.81) and 13.78 (SD = 0.49) respectively. Prior to and following the program measurements were conducted, and data were collected on students' anthropometric and fitness components of the Brockport physical fitness test as well as a soccer skill performance based on the SO soccer skill test. Participants in the TRG trained 8 weeks, 1.5h per session, three times per week, in an after-school soccer program. CG did not participate in any sports program outside of the school physical education class. Dependent t tests and effect size calculations revealed that SO athletes and non-disabled partners scored significantly higher with regard to physical fitness and football skills in most variables compared with their CG. This Unified Program was successful in increasing fitness and soccer skill performance of youth WID as well as of those WoID.

The purpose of this article is to describe a theoretical model and practice examples of judgment and decision making bias within the context of inclusion in physical education and sports. After presenting the context of adapting for inclusion, the theoretical roots of judgment and decision are described, and are linked to the practice of physical education and sports. The specific concepts of judgment and decision making are then imported into selected examples of inclusive contexts, where events and processes of interest are reconceptualized in judgment and decision making terminology. Intervention strategies for reducing bias among practitioners while engaging in judgment and decision making during inclusive practice are recommended, and research studies aiming at validating and quantifying the distribution of decision making bias in physical education and sports are suggested. Background Rapid voluntary stepping has been recognized as an important measure of balance control. Objective The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and convergent validity of a Rapid Stepping Test protocol utilizing a virtual reality SeeMeTM system (VR-RST) in elderly ambulatory and independent individuals living in a community residential home. Methods Associations between step execution times determined by the system and the Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) Questionnaire, and clinical measures of balance performance in the MiniBESTest and Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, were established in 60 participants (mean age 88.2 ± 5.0 years). All participants completed the study. Results The correlations of the ABC questionnaire and the clinical tests with VR-RST forward and backward stepping were moderate (ρ rage 0.42-0.52), and weak to moderate with sideward stepping (ρ rage 0.32-0.52). Moderate to strong correlations were found across stepping directions (ρ rage 0.45-0.87). Conclusion Findings support the test's feasibility and validity and confirm the utility of the VR-RST as an assessment tool in an elderly population.

This review summarizes the existing knowledge regarding the effects and recommendations for physical training (PTr) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). In addition, perceived benefits and barriers to PTr in this population are reviewed. One of the primary aims of rehabilitation for patients with MS is to increase their levels of activity and independence. PTr is a central component in the rehabilitation process. Nonetheless, the use of PTr in the rehabilitation of patients with MS has been a controversial issue for years. Nowadays, strong evidence exists that aerobic training in individuals with MS has a positive effect on overall physical conditioning, gait speed, fatigue, depression and cognition. Unlike aerobic training, the number of studies that investigated strength training effects in this population is limited. However, the available data show that resistance training also has beneficial effects on MS patients. It is important to note, that PTr has no deleterious effects in MS patients. In the various studies, there was diversity with regard to the duration and the frequency of PTr, while intensity was often poorly described. It is recommended that individuals with MS engage in aerobic training (at 60-80% of maximal heart rate), strength training (1-3 sets of 8-15 repetitions), the range of motion, balance and ambulation exercises. Awareness of the benefits of physical activity and sense of achievement are not sufficient to promote exercise participation in persons with MS. Factors relating to physical exertion, sports facilities availability and self-efficacy play an important role in promoting exercise participation.

The purpose of this study was to describe the change in selected fitness and skill components over a nine-month period of a new intensive Wheelchair Rugby (WR) practice program. Sixteen WR players of the newly established national league participated in this intervention, which included team and individual practice sessions. Five items of the Beck Battery of Quad Rugby Skills and a 10-min wheelchair push test were performed at the beginning (t 1), after three months (t 2), and after an additional six months period of practice (t 3). Based on repeated measures t-tests for mean data of at least 50% of the participants, significant improvements were found in the 10-min and in the sprint tests between t1 and t 2, and in the picking and manoeuvrability tests between t 2 and t 3. It can be concluded that this training program was effective in improving players' endurance and manoeuvrability. The application of the test battery for training design and progression control appears very useful.

The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable Turkish version of the Friendship Activity Scale (FAS). Both the English and Turkish versions of the FAS were administered to 36 students to check for language equivalence. The Turkish version of the FAS was then administered to 226 students to ensure internal consistency, and to 61 students to test re-test reliability. The purpose of this study was to describe running economy, soccer specific endurance, and selected kinematic running criteria in soccer players with cerebral palsy (SPCP) and to compare them with values of position-matched players without CP. Fourteen international, male soccer players with cerebral palsy completed the “Yo-Yo” intermittent recovery run level 1 (IRL-1) test to assess soccer-specific endurance and a submaximal running test on a treadmill to determine running economy. The mean IRL-1 distance covered by the SPCP of the Irish CP team was found to be 43–50% below the mean distance attained by position-matched soccer players without disability, while running economy was found to be within the range of that reported for able-bodied athletes. No relationship could be found between the level of CP-ISRA classification and soccer-specific endurance or running economy in this group of elite level SPCP. Though small in number, these data support a further examination of the relationship between CP classification and sport-specific performance.

The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of two awareness programs (6-day vs. 1-day programs) on children's attitudes toward peers with a visual impairment. Three hundred and forty-four Spanish physical education students (164 girls and 180 boys) aged 10-15 years, took part in the study. A modified version of the Attitudes Toward Disability Questionnaire (ATDQ) was used, which includes three sub-scales: (i) cognitive perceptions, (ii) emotional perception, and (iii) behavioral readiness to interact with children with disabilities. The questionnaire was filled out during the regular physical education class before and immediately after the awareness activity. The 6-day didactical unit included a lecture on visual impairments and a video describing visual impairments and the game of 5-a-side soccer (first lesson), sensibilization activities toward visual impairment (second and third lessons), training and competitive 5-a-side soccer tasks using blindfolded goggles (fourth and fifth lessons), and a sport show and chat with soccer players with a visual impairment (sixth lesson). The 1-day awareness unit only included the final session of the didactical activity. Repeated measures analysis of variance revealed significant time effects in the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral subscales. Sex also was found to demonstrate significant effects, in which women showed more favorable results than men. A time-by-group intervention effect was only demonstrated in the cognitive sub-scale, and the 6-day didactic intervention was more effective than the 1-day awareness unit.

Background The purpose of this study is to systematically retrieve, examine and discuss scientific studies focusing on motivational correlates that both contribute to, and can be assumed to be effects of, participation in sport, recreation, or health-related physical activities in persons with intellectual disability (ID). Methods A systematic analysis of the literature retrieved through electronic databases and other resources was performed, covering articles published from 1980 through 2009. Inclusion criteria were based on terms referring to the participants, the psychosocial correlates and the type of activity. Results Twenty-three articles satisfied the inclusion criteria, and were divided into four categories of studies: (1) cross-sectional designs, (2) experimental prospective one-group designs, (3) longitudinal comparative intervention designs, and (4) qualitative designs. The level of quality regarding the intervention studies was assessed using four different scales, and on average they depicted a moderate level of evidence. Conclusions Both exercise and sport-related activities seem to contribute to well-being. Improved physical fitness and elevated skill level gained during exercise and sport activities appear to serve as mediators for increased perceptions of self-efficacy and social competence. Peer modelling, as well as video and audio reinforcement, appear to be important modalities in maintaining compliance to exercise programmes.

This article focuses on ethical concerns about modifying physical activities within a variety of education, recreation, rehabilitation and competition contexts. An ecological frame of reference common within current educational and rehabilitation theories is utilised for reflecting upon adapted physical activity practices. Ethical principles challenged in the article are (a) the utilitarian consequence to all participants; (b) professional paternalism; and (c) empowerment of individuals with a disability. Concerns arising with respect to these ethical principles in adapted physical activity practices are discussed across modifications in terms of (i) the tasks involved; (ii) the environmental conditions; (iii) the equipment used; (iv) the game rules; and (v) the instruction methods.

The purpose of this study was to validate an Israeli version of the Children's Attitude towards Inclusion in Physical Education (CAIPE) scale (Block, 1995). Participants were 120 high school students from grades 9, 11, and 12. Twenty-five students participated in sport classes and the others were regular students. A modified version of the Attitudes Toward Including Students with Disability in Physical Education ATISD-PE questionnaire was used as a measure of concurrent validity. Results indicated a bi-factorial structure with moderate to adequate Cronbach's Alpha reliability of the general and sport-specific sub-scales of the CAIPE, respectively. No difference in attitude was found between children who participated in sport classes and those who did not. Children who had previous exposure to children with disability exhibited reduced willingness toward including them in physical education classes. Previous exposure did not appear to have an effect on peers' attitudes toward including children with disability in basketball.

The aim of the study was to compare the effects of aquatic intervention with those of land‐based intervention on social function, perceived competence, and social acceptance in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Twenty‐two children (F, 17; M, 5) with spastic diplegia CP participated in the study: 12 in the aquatic intervention group (5.4 yrs ± 0.95); and 10 in the exercise intervention group (4.9 yrs ± 0.99). This article reviews literature on the psychological benefits of sports for the disabled. Beginning with traditional models and resource development models of rehabilitation, an integrative model of sports for the disabled is suggested, emphasizing the concept of efficacy-based empowerment through sport. Empirical research is reviewed according to the conceptual categories of this model: (a) performance accomplishments and functional efficiency, (b) perceived self-efficacy, (c) self-concept and self-esteem, (d) personality disorders, mood states and locus of control and (e) activity level and social acceptance. This review suggests that most psychological constructs expressed within the empowerment model are positively affected by physical activity in disabled people, when applied properly. Several recommendations are outlined for beneficial application of the model in practice as well as for future research topics.
