Introduction: Obesity results from an imbalance in the intake and expenditure of calories that leads to lifestyle-related diseases. Although genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have revealed many obesity-related genetic factors, the interactions of these factors and calorie intake remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate interactions between calorie intake and the polygenic risk score (PRS) of BMI. Methods: Three cohorts, i.e., from the Korea Association REsource (KARE; n = 8,736), CArdioVAscular Disease Association Study (CAVAS; n = 9,334), and Health EXAminee (HEXA; n = 28,445), were used for this study. BMI-related genetic loci were selected from previous GWAS. Two scores, PRS, and association (a)PRS, were used; the former was determined from 193 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 5 GWAS datasets, and the latter from 62 SNPs (potentially associated) from 3 Korean cohorts (meta-analysis, p < 0.01). Results: PRS and aPRS were significantly associated with BMI in all 3 cohorts but did not exhibit a significant interaction with total calorie intake. Similar results were obtained for obesity. PRS and aPRS were significantly associated with obesity but did not show a significant interaction with total calorie intake. We further analyzed the interaction with protein, fat, and carbohydrate intake. The results were similar to those for total calorie intake, with PRS and aPRS found to not be associated with the interaction of any of the 3 nutrition components for either BMI or obesity. Discussion: The interaction of BMI PRS with calorie intake was investigated in 3 independent Korean cohorts (total n = 35,094) and no interactions were found between PRS and calorie intake for obesity.

Abstract Prediabetes (PD) is a high-risk state of developing type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Metabolomics-based biomarker studies can provide advanced opportunities for prediction of PD over the conventional methods. Here, we aimed to identify metabolic markers and verify their abilities to predict PD, as compared to the performance of the traditional clinical risk factor (CRF) and previously reported metabolites in other population-based studies. Targeted metabolites quantification was performed in 1723 participants in the Korea Association REsource (KARE) cohort, from which 500 normal individuals were followed up for 6 years. We selected 12 significant metabolic markers, including five amino acids, four glycerophospholipids, two sphingolipids, and one acylcarnitine, at baseline, resulting in a predicted incidence of PD with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.71 during follow-up. Abstract Background Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is an important complication of ischemic stroke, although the incidence of DVT is regarded as being lower in Asian than in non-Asian patients. Here, we investigated the incidence and factors associated with DVT in Asian patients with ischemic stroke. Methods Acute ischemic stroke patients received lower extremity ultrasonography (LEUS) to diagnose the presence of DVT. Clinical characteristics and laboratory results, including D-dimer level, were compared between patients with and without DVT. Independent risk factors for DVT were investigated using multivariable analysis. Similar analysis was performed to identify factors associated with elevated D-dimer level (> 0.5 mg/dl) in acute ischemic stroke patients. Results During the study period, 289 patients were enrolled, and 38 (13.1%) showed DVT. Female sex (OR = 2.579, 95% CI = 1.224–5.432; p = 0.013) and a high National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score (OR = 1.191 95% CI = 1.095–1.294; p = 0.005) were independently associated with the presence of DVT, although D-dimer level was not. Stroke mechanism, especially cardioembolic stroke (OR = 3.777, 95% CI = 1.532–9.313; p = 0.004; reference: large artery atherosclerosis), NIHSS score (OR = 1.087, 95% CI = 1.002–1.179; p = 0.001) and thrombolysis (OR = 12.360, 95% CI 2.456–62.213; p = 0.002) were independently associated with elevated abnormal D-dimer levels. Conclusion The severity of ischemic stroke, but not the D-dimer level, was associated with the presence of DVT in Asian ischemic stroke patients. D-dimer level was influenced by the stroke mechanism. LEUS in patients with severe neurological deficit, rather than screening with D-dimer, may be more beneficial for diagnosing DVT in Asian patients with acute ischemic stroke.

Purpose Cigarette smoking (CS) is one of the major risk factors of cerebral atherosclerotic disease, however, its level of contribution to extracranial and intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ECAS and ICAS) was not fully revealed yet. The purpose of our study was to assess the association of CS to cerebral atherosclerosis along with other risk factors. Materials and Methods All consecutive patients who were angiographically confirmed with severe symptomatic cerebral atherosclerotic disease between January 2002 and December 2012 were included in this study. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for ECAS and ICAS. Thereafter, CS group were compared to non-CS group in the entire study population and in a propensity-score matched population with two different age-subgroups. Results Of 1709 enrolled patients, 794 (46.5%) had extracranial (EC) lesions and the other 915 (53.5%) had intracranial (IC) lesions. CS group had more EC lesions (55.8% vs. 35.3%, P

Elucidating the genetic basis of influenza A viruses (IAVs) is important to understand which mutations will determine the virulence and the host range of mammals. Here, seasonal H3N2 influenza was adapted in mice by serial passage and four mutants, each carrying amino acid substitutions related to mouse adaptation in either the PB2, HA, NP, or NA protein, were generated. To confirm the contribution of each gene to enhanced pathogenicity and mouse adaptation, mice were inoculated with the respective variants, and virulence, replication, histopathology, and infectivity were examined. The virus harboring HA mutations displayed increased infection efficiency and replication competence, resulting in higher mortality in mice relative to those infected with wild-type virus. By contrast, the NP D34N mutation caused rapid and widespread infection in multiple organs without presenting virulent symptoms. Additionally, the PB2 F323L mutation presented delayed but elevated replication competence in the respiratory tract, whereas the S331R mutation in NA showed no considerable effects on mouse adaptation. These results suggested that mouse-adapted changes in HA are major factors in increased pathogenicity and that mutations in NP and PB2 also contribute to cross-species adaptability. Our findings offer a better understanding of the molecular basis for IAV pathogenicity and adaptation in a new host.

Background and Purpose Following the positive results from recent trials on endovascular therapy (EVT), bridging therapy (intravenous alteplase plus EVT) is increasingly being used for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. However, the optimal dose of intravenous alteplase remains unknown in centers where bridging therapy is actively performed. The optimal dose for eventual recanalization and positive clinical outcomes in patients receiving bridging therapy also remains unknown. Methods In this prospective Enhanced Control of Hypertension and Thrombolysis Stroke Study (ENCHANTED) sub-study, we explored the outcomes following treatment with two different doses (low- [0.6 mg/kg] or standard-dose [0.9 mg/kg]) of intravenous alteplase across 12 Korean centers where EVT is actively performed. The primary endpoint was a favorable outcome at 90 days (modified Rankin Scale scores 0 to 1). Secondary endpoints included symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in all patients, and the recanalization rate and favorable outcome in patients who underwent cerebral angiography for EVT (ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01422616). Results Of 351 patients, the primary outcome occurred in 46% of patients in both the standard-(80/173) and low-dose (81/178) groups (odds ratio [OR], 1.14; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.72 to 1.81; P=0.582), although ICHs tended to occur more frequently in the standard-dose group (8% vs. 3%, P=0.056). Of the 67 patients who underwent cerebral angiography, there was no significant difference in favorable functional outcome between the standard- and low-dose groups (39% vs. 21%; OR, 2.39; 95% CI, 0.73 to 7.78; P=0.149). Conclusions There was no difference in functional outcome between the patients receiving different doses of alteplase in centers actively performing bridging therapy.

Background and Purpose Troponin, a marker of myocardial injury, frequently increases and is related with poor outcome in ischemic stroke patients. However, the long-term outcome of this elevation remains uncertain. We, therefore, investigated the prognostic significance of troponin elevation for long-term mortality, and explored factors affecting troponin elevation after ischemic stroke. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the medical data of stroke patients who were admitted within 24 hours of symptom onset and underwent a serum cardiac troponin I test at admission during a five-year period. Information on mortality as the outcome was obtained from the National Death Certificate system. Results A total of 1,692 patients were eligible for inclusion with 33 months of median follow-up. Troponin elevation that exceeded the 99th percentile (>0.04 ng/mL) of values was detected in 166 patients (9.8%). After adjusting for baseline characteristics, troponin elevation was associated with previous ischemic heart disease and congestive heart failure, comorbid atrial fibrillation and active cancer, and increased National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score. Patients with troponin elevation had a high risk of overall death (hazard ratio [HR] 1.83, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.40–2.40), including stroke-related (HR 1.71, 95% CI 1.14–2.55), cardiac-related (HR 3.17, 95% CI 1.49–6.74), and cancer-related (HR 1.98, 95% CI 1.14–3.45) death than those without troponin elevation. Conclusions Troponin elevation in the acute stage of ischemic stroke was associated with long-term mortality, mainly due to increased stroke- and cancer-related death in the first year and cardiacrelated death in the later period.

Abstract Background Copy number variation (CNV) is known to play an important role in the genetics of complex diseases and several methods have been proposed to detect association of CNV with phenotypes of interest. Statistical methods for CNV association analysis can be categorized into two different strategies. First, the copy number is estimated by maximum likelihood and association of the expected copy number with the phenotype is tested. Second, the observed probe intensity measurements can be directly used to detect association of CNV with the phenotypes of interest. Results For each strategy we provide a statistic that can be applied to extended families. The computational efficiency of the proposed methods enables genome-wide association analysis and we show with simulation studies that the proposed methods outperform other existing approaches. In particular, we found that the first strategy is always more efficient than the second strategy no matter whether copy numbers for each individual are well identified or not. With the proposed methods, we performed genome-wide CNV association analyses of hematological trait, hematocrit, on 521 Korean family samples. Conclusions We found that statistical analysis with the expected copy number is more powerful than the statistic with the probe intensity measurements regardless of the accuracy of the estimation of copy numbers.

Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is an indicator of the average blood glucose concentration. Failing to control HbA1c levels can accelerate the development of complications in patients with diabetes. Although metabolite profiles associated with HbA1c level in diabetes patients have been characterized using different platforms, more studies using high-throughput technology will be helpful to identify additional metabolites related to diabetes. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients were divided into two groups based on the HbA1c level: normal (HbA1c ≤6%) and high (HbA1c ≥9%) in both discovery and replication sets. A targeted metabolomics approach was used to quantify serum metabolites and multivariate logistic regression was used to identify significant differences between groups. The concentrations of 22 metabolites differed significantly between the two groups in the discovery set. In the replication set, the levels of 21 metabolites, including 16 metabolites identified in the discovery set, differed between groups. Among these, concentrations of eleven amino acids and one phosphatidylcholine (PC), lysoPC a C16:1, were higher and four metabolites, including three PCs (PC ae C36:1, PC aa C26:0, PC aa C34:2) and hexose, were lower in the group with normal HbA1c group than in the group with high HbA1c. Metabolites with high concentrations in the normal HbA1c group, such as glycine, valine, and PCs, may contribute to reducing HbA1c levels in patients with T2D. The metabolite signatures identified in this study provide insight into the mechanisms underlying changes in HbA1c levels in T2D.

Background and Purpose Hemicraniectomy is a decompressive surgery used to remove a large bone flap to allow edematous brain tissue to bulge extracranially. However, early indicators of the decompressive effects of hemicraniectomy are unclear. We investigated whether reduction of midline shift following hemicraniectomy is associated with improved consciousness and survival in patients with malignant middle cerebral artery infarctions. Methods We studied 70 patients with malignant middle cerebral artery infarctions (MMI) who underwent hemicraniectomies. Midline shift was measured preoperatively and postoperatively using computed tomography (CT). Consciousness level was evaluated using the Glasgow Coma Scale on postoperative day 1. Patient survival was assessed six months after stroke onset. Results The median time interval between preoperative and postoperative CT was 8.3 hours (interquartile range, 6.1–10.2 hours). BackgroundUntil recently, genome-wide association study (GWAS)-based findings have provided a substantial genetic contribution to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) or related glycemic traits. However, identification of allelic heterogeneity and population-specific genetic variants under consideration of potential confounding factors will be very valuable for clinical applicability. To identify novel susceptibility loci for T2DM and glycemic traits, we performed a two-stage genetic association study in a Korean population.MethodsWe performed a logistic analysis for T2DM, and the first discovery GWAS was analyzed for 1,042 cases and 2,943 controls recruited from a population-based cohort (KARE, n=8,842). The second stage, de novo replication analysis, was performed in 1,216 cases and 1,352 controls selected from an independent population-based cohort (Health 2, n=8,500). A multiple linear regression analysis for glycemic traits was further performed in a total of 14,232 nondiabetic individuals consisting of 7,696 GWAS and 6,536 replication study participants. A meta-analysis was performed on the combined results using effect size and standard errors estimated for stage 1 and 2, respectively.ResultsA combined meta-analysis for T2DM identified two new (rs11065756 and rs2074356) loci reaching genome-wide significance in CCDC63 and C12orf51 on the 12q24 region. In addition, these variants were significantly associated with fasting plasma glucose and homeostasis model assessment of β-cell function. Interestingly, two independent single nucleotide polymorphisms were associated with sex-specific stratification in this study.ConclusionOur study showed a strong association between T2DM and glycemic traits. We further observed that two novel loci with multiple diverse effects were highly specific to males. Taken together, these findings may provide additional insights into the clinical assessment or subclassification of disease risk in a Korean population.

The objective of this study is to find single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with a risk of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Korean adults and to investigate the longitudinal association between these SNPs and T2D and the interaction effects of iron intake and average hemoglobin level. Data from the KoGES_Ansan and Ansung Study were used. Gene-iron interaction analysis was conducted using a two-step approach. To select candidate SNPs associated with T2D, a total of 7,935 adults at baseline were included in genome-wide association analysis (step one). After excluding T2D prevalent cases, prospective analyses were conducted with 7,024 adults aged 40-69 (step two). The association of selected SNPs and iron status with T2D and their interaction were determined using a Cox proportional hazard model. A total of 3 SNPs [rs9465871 (CDKAL1), rs10761745 (JMJD1C), and rs163177 (KCNQ1)] were selected as candidate SNPs related to T2D. Among them, rs10761745 (JMJD1C) and rs163177 (KCNQ1) were prospectively associated with T2D. High iron intake was also prospectively associated with the risk of T2D after adjusting for covariates. Average hemoglobin level was positively associated with T2D after adjusting for covariates in women. We also found significant interaction effects between rs10761745 (JMJD1C) and average hemoglobin levels on the risk of T2D among women with normal inflammation and without anemia at baseline. In conclusion, KCNQ1 and JMJD1C may prospectively contribute to the risk of T2D incidence among adults over the age of 40 and JMJD1C, but CDKAL1 may not, and iron status may interactively contribute to T2D incidence in women.

BackgroundTroponin elevation with electrocardiography changes is not uncommon in patients with acute ischemic stroke; however, it is still unclear whether the mechanism of these changes is due to cardiac problems or neurally mediated myocytic damage. Thus, we investigated cardiac and neurological predictors of troponin elevation in those patients. Methods and ResultsWe retrospectively analyzed medical data of the prospectively registered ischemic stroke patients on stroke registry who were admitted and underwent a serum cardiac troponin I and 12‐lead electrocardiography within 24 hours of symptom onset. However, patients with well‐known troponin‐elevating comorbidities were excluded from the analysis. Among 1404 ischemic stroke patients, 121 (8.7%) had elevated troponin, which was defined as more than 0.04 mg/mL. Multivariable analysis identified electrocardiography abnormalities such as QTc‐prolongation (odds ratio [OR]: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.02–2.28), left ventricular hypertrophy (OR: 2.14, 95% CI 1.43–3.19), Q‐wave (OR: 2.53, 95% CI: 1.48–4.32), and ST elevation (OR: 2.74, 95% CI: 1.12–6.72) as cardiac variables associated with troponin elevation, and higher National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score (OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 1.01–1.07) and insular cortical lesions (OR: 2.78, 95% CI: 1.85–4.19) as neurological variables associated with troponin elevation. Incidence of troponin elevation as well as QTc‐prolongation was increased further in combination with cardiac and neurological factors. ConclusionsCertain cardiac and neurological conditions in acute ischemic stroke may contribute to troponin elevation. The proposed concept of cardiac vulnerability to cerebrogenic stress can be a practical interpretation of troponin elevation and electrocardiography abnormalities in stroke patients.

BackgroundPeriodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting tissues of the teeth, and can lead to serious complications such as tooth loss and systemic health problems, including diabetes, which have a bidirectional relationship with periodontitis. Circulating microparticles originate from different cell types after stimuli such as activation or apoptosis. Interleukins are related to processes in the regulation of the immune response, inflammation, and cell growth. This study aimed to evaluate circulating microparticles as well as interleukins in the plasma, at baseline and 1 month after the end of the non-surgical periodontal treatment.MethodsSamples were collected from 45 patients, with moderate to severe periodontitis with diabetes (N = 25) and without diabetes (N = 20). Microparticles were evaluated in the platelet-poor plasma by flow cytometer. Cytokine levels were evaluated by the enzyme immunoabsorption assay (ELISA).ResultsHigher levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines were found in the group with diabetes compared to the non-diabetic group both at baseline and 1 month after the end of the treatment. A higher IL-6/IL-10 ratio was found in patients with diabetes compared to the group without diabetes at T0 and T1, whereas an increased IFN-γ/IL-10 ratio was only found at T1 in patients with diabetes in comparison to the group without diabetes. In the group with diabetes, it was verified positive correlations between IL-10 and IL-6 or IFN-γ and a negative correlation between IL-6 and PMP, at T0; in contrast, in the T1, negative correlations were found between TNF-α and IL-10 or PMP. Besides, at T0, it was evidenced positive correlations both between circulating TNF-α and IL-6, and IL-10 and EMP, as well as a negative correlation between IL-10 and PMP in the group with diabetes. In addition, it was observed in T1 positive correlations between levels of TNF-α and IL-6, IFN-γ, or IL-10, and between PMP and IFN-γ, and between EMP and IL-6, TNF-α and IFN-γ in this group.ConclusionThe results suggest a modulatory effect of the periodontitis associated with diabetes, as well as the periodontal treatment, in the systemic inflammatory status of the participants of the study.

The single nucleotide polymorphism rs9939609 of the gene FTO, which encodes fat mass and obesity-associated protein, is strongly associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in multiple populations; however, the underlying mechanism of this association is unclear. The present study aimed to investigate FTO genotype-dependent metabolic changes in obesity and T2D. To elucidate metabolic dysregulation associated with disease risk genotype, genomic and metabolomic datasets were recruited from 2,577 participants of the Korean Association REsource (KARE) cohort, including 40 homozygous carriers of the FTO risk allele (AA), 570 heterozygous carriers (AT), and 1,967 participants carrying no risk allele (TT). A total of 134 serum metabolites were quantified using a targeted metabolomics approach. Through comparison of various statistical methods, seven metabolites were identified that are significantly altered in obesity and T2D based on the FTO risk allele (adjusted p < 0.05). These identified metabolites are relevant to phosphatidylcholine metabolic pathway, and previously reported to be metabolic markers of obesity and T2D. In conclusion, using metabolomics with the information from genome-wide association studies revealed significantly altered metabolites depending on the FTO genotype in complex disorders. This study may contribute to a better understanding of the biological mechanisms linking obesity and T2D.

Purpose To compare small bowel distension and side effects between a diluted polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution and a low-density (0.1% w/v) barium sulfate suspension (LDBSS) for CT enterography (CTE) preparation. Materials and Methods Total 173 consecutive patients who underwent CTE were enrolled in this study. The LDBSS (1 L) was used in 50 patients, and the diluted iso-osmotic PEG solution (1 L) was used in 123 patients. Two blinded radiologists independently scored jejunal and ileal distensions on a 5-point scale. To compare side effects between the two groups, the patients reported whether they had immediate complications after the administration of the oral contrast media. Results For ileal and jejunal distension, the diluted PEG solution showed no difference from the LDBSS for either reader (ileum: reader 1, median, 4; 4, interquartile range, 3–4; 3–4, p = 0.997; reader 2, median, 4; 4, interquartile range, 3.3–4.0; 3–4, p = 0.064; jejunum: reader 1, median, 2; 2, interquartile range, 2–3; 2–3, p = 0.560; reader 2, median, 3; 2, interquartile range, 2–3; 2–3, p = 0.192). None of the patients complained of immediate complications following administration of either of the oral contrast media. Conclusion The diluted PEG solution showed comparable bowel distension compared to LDBSS and no immediate side effects; thus, it can be a useful alternative.

The aim of this study was to compare diagnostic performance for extra-prostatic extension (EPE) and image quality among three image datasets: conventional T2-weighted images (T2WIconv, slice thickness, 3 mm) and high-resolution thin-slice T2WI (T2WIHR, 2 mm), with and without deep learning reconstruction (DLR) in patients with prostatic cancer (PCa). A total of 88 consecutive patients (28 EPE-positive and 60 negative) diagnosed with PCa via radical prostatectomy who had undergone 3T-MRI were included. Two independent reviewers performed a crossover review in three sessions, in which each reviewer recorded five-point confidence scores for the presence of EPE and image quality using a five-point Likert scale. Pathologic topographic maps served as the reference standard. For both reviewers, T2WIconv showed better diagnostic performance than T2WIHR with and without DLR (AUCs, in order, for reviewer 1, 0.883, 0.806, and 0.772, p = 0.0006; for reviewer 2, 0.803, 0.762, and 0.745, p = 0.022). The image quality was also the best in T2WIconv, followed by T2WIHR with DLR and T2WIHR without DLR for both reviewers (median, in order, 3, 4, and 5, p < 0.0001). In conclusion, T2WIconv was optimal in regard to image quality and diagnostic performance for the evaluation of EPE in patients with PCa.

Aim. Alveolar deficiency is considered one of the main limitations for placement of osseointegrated implants, as well as for their long-term success, especially in the anterior region of the maxilla. Objective. To report a clinical case of reconstruction of atrophic maxilla with deproteinized bovine bone associated with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and titanium mesh and to assess the linear and volumetric bone gains and rehabilitation with implants in a 5-year follow-up. Case. Patient with bone deficiency in the anterior maxilla region underwent bone reconstruction with deproteinized bovine bone associated with PRF and titanium mesh. After six months, the necessary bone height and volume were obtained for placement of implants, and the bone contour was restored in the anterior region, providing functional and aesthetic improvement. The amount of linear and volumetric bone gains was compared to baseline computed tomography scans. Three implants were placed in the grafted region, and a bone tissue sample was obtained at the time of their placement. Histological analysis showed neo-formed bone tissue in contact with the remaining particles of the biomaterial. After six months, the implants were activated, and the prosthesis was placed on the implants, which were monitored for five years. Conclusion. Implants can be placed predictably in regions with vertical and horizontal bone augmentations by using xenogeneic bone grafts associated with titanium mesh and PRF.

Background. The aim of this study was to assess the volumetric stability and bone formation in grafts with Bio-Oss and autogenous bone at different proportions in rabbit calvaria. Material and Methods. Ten rabbits received four titanium cylinders in their calvaria and randomly divided into the following groups: Group I: Bio-Oss (100%), Group II: Bio-Oss (75%) + autogenous bone (25%), Group III: Bio-Oss (50%) + autogenous bone (50%), and Group IV: autogenous bone (100%). After twelve weeks, the animals were euthanized, and samples were collected for clinical and histological analysis. Results. Clinical analysis showed that Groups I (90.43 ± 8.99) and II (90.87 ± 7.43) had greater dimensional stability compared to Group IV (P=0.0005). Histologically, Groups I, II, and III showed areas of bone formation with particles of biomaterial remaining in close contact with the newly formed bone. However, there were no significant differences between the groups regarding the newly formed bone area. Conclusion. It was concluded that the use of Bio-Oss either alone or associated with the autogenous bone at a proportion of 25% showed superior dimensional stability compared to the use of autogenous bone in the proposed experimental model.

A 30-year-old Caucasian man presented with an 18-month history of an asymptomatic calcified mass, located on the buccal side of the alveolar ridge. Medical records did not present any underlying conditions. On intraoral examination, the lesion was located on the right side of the maxilla, showing mucosal fenestration with mineralized tissue measuring approximately 1 cm in diameter. Radiographic examination showed multiple radiopaque masses. Incisional biopsy was performed, and histological analysis revealed a presence of enamel matrix, dentin, and cementum, resembling tooth-like structures. Surgical removal was offered after the diagnostic confirmation of peripheral odontoma, but the patient refused because of the asymptomatic nature of the lesion.

Aim. To assess the clinical periodontal and medical parameters in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) at different levels of renal disease. Background. CRF is a progressive and irreversible loss of renal function associated with a decline in the glomerular filtration rate. Periodontal disease is a destructive inflammatory disease affecting periodontal tissues that shows high prevalence in patients with CRF. Materials and Methods. 102 CRF patients were included and divided into an early stage group (EG), predialysis group (PDG), and hemodialysis group (HDG). The medical parameters were taken from the patients’ records. Results. Periodontal clinical condition differed among the CRF groups. Clinical attachment loss was greater in the HDG and PDG group compared to the EG (p=0.0364); the same was observed in the Plaque Index (p=0.0296); the others periodontal parameters did not show any differences. Ferritin levels were significantly higher in the HDG when compared to the EG and PGD (p
