Resource management efficiency can be a beneficial step toward optimizing power consumption in software-hardware integrated systems. Languages such as C, C++, and Fortran have been extremely popular for dealing with optimization, memory management, and other resource management. We investigate novel algorithmic architectures capable of optimizing resource requirements and increasing energy efficiency. The experimental results obtained with C++ can be extended to other programming languages as well. We emphasize the inherent drawbacks of memory management operators. These operators are intended to be extremely generic in their application, just as the concept of dynamic memory is. As a result, they are unable to take advantage of the various optimization techniques and opportunities that specific use cases present. Each source code file is modeled after its own distinct memory usage pattern, which can be used to speed up memory management routines. Such concepts are frequently time-consuming and costly to implement; consequently, they are not the primary concern of application developers, as they require manual development and integration. We intend to address this gap by providing a suite of memory management algorithms that enable dramatic performance improvements at the source code level while allowing for seamless integration across multiple use cases. The techniques have been evaluated on several performance parameters, and results have been presented. In this paper, we have compared a variety of memory allocation techniques and compared their space and energy efficiency requirements. Three variants of SSDAM, SSDAM-E, and DLLOM strategies have been evaluated and compared against the base performance of new and delete operators. SSDAM-E, SSDAM with new delete operators, and DDLOM improve the memory consumption by the factors of 8.01, 7.0, and 4.0, respectively. In the worst case, SSDAM-E gave an average running time of 5.650 sec faster than the DLLOM average time of 7.496 sec. As far as energy efficiency is considered, SSDAM-Original and SSDAM-E-Original attain 100%, in comparison with the base efficiency of 12.48% characterized by new/delete operators.

This study aims to determine economic burden or cost of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its consequences from patient perspective and to examine factors influencing the cost. This is a prevalence-based cost-of-illness (COI) study. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in Yangon, Myanmar during March and April 2018. Face-to-face structured interview was conducted among 264 people living with HIV (PLHIV) who were members of the selected four self-help groups (SHGs) that provided HIV peer support. Micro-costing approach was adopted for the cost calculation. Direct medical cost, direct non-medical cost and indirect cost were considered. Cost of HIV per patient in the year 2017 was estimated at 228.2 international dollar (Int$). Direct medical cost was only small portion of the total cost (5.6%). Indirect cost or cost of time loss was the largest contributor among the cost components, accounted for 61.2% of the total cost. First year of the antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation and second line drug regimen have positive effect on the costs. HIV resulted in substantial economic burden for the patients. Effective interventions aim at reducing the economic burden on patients by providing compensation on transportation cost and providing job opportunity are essential. Further researchers examining cost from provider and societal perspectives are warranted to provide complete picture of the economic burden of HIV in Myanmar.

Background Lower respiratory infections constitute a major disease burden worldwide. Treatment is usually empiric and targeted towards typical bacterial pathogens. Understanding the prevalence of pathogens not covered by empirical treatment is important to improve diagnostic and treatment algorithms. Methods A prospective observational study in peri-urban communities of Yangon, Myanmar was conducted between July 2018 and April 2019. Sputum specimens of 299 adults presenting with fever and productive cough were tested for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (microscopy and GeneXpert MTB/RIF [Mycobacterium tuberculosis/resistance to rifampicin]) and Burkholderia pseudomallei (Active Melioidosis Detect Lateral Flow Assay and culture). Nasopharyngeal swabs underwent respiratory virus (influenza A, B, respiratory syncytial virus) polymerase chain reaction testing. Results Among 299 patients, 32% (95% confidence interval [CI] 26 to 37) were diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB), including 9 rifampicin-resistant cases. TB patients presented with a longer duration of fever (median 14 d) and productive cough (median 30 d) than non-TB patients (median fever duration 6 d, cough 7 d). One case of melioidosis pneumonia was detected by rapid test and confirmed by culture. Respiratory viruses were detected in 16% (95% CI 12 to 21) of patients. Conclusions TB was very common in this population, suggesting that microscopy and GeneXpert MTB/RIF on all sputum samples should be routinely included in diagnostic algorithms for fever and cough. Melioidosis was uncommon in this population.

Purpose: We report a presumptive case of bilateral placoid choroiditis secondary to disseminated Cryptococcus neoformans infection and review the literature on choroidal involvement of C neoformans. Methods: A case report is presented. Results: A 35-year-old HIV-positive man presented with disseminated cryptococcal infection. Cryptococcal meningitis was confirmed by lumbar puncture, and skin involvement was confirmed by microscopy of scrapings from a papular, umbilicated, ulcerated lesion. Ophthalmologic examination revealed intact visual acuity, clear vitreous, and multiple yellowish, placoid-appearing choroidal lesions in the posterior pole bilaterally. Conclusions: Multifocal choroiditis caused by C neoformans is an uncommon manifestation of disseminated infection, and placoid yellowish choroidal lesions are an unusual variant. These findings must be differentiated from choroidal tuberculosis and other infections. Multifocal choroiditis typically occurs in AIDS patients and may precede the presentation of meningitis. In such patients, choroidal lesions warrant investigation for systemic, life-threatening opportunistic infections.

The multipath propagation includes both the moving and stationary interference between the transmitter and receiver in industrial environments. It is not straightforward to get access to the industrial environments for the study of the wireless environment. This work takes the measurements from the earlier work of the multi-wall-multi-floor (MWF) environment from Myanmar to model the industrial environment. This paper considers the case of the sugar plant and purified sugar machine room to understand the interference caused due to moving and stationary objects in the plant. The path loss depiction of the MWF model of the industrial environment and the multistoried building is investigated. Moreover, the channel impulse response of the fading scenarios is also presented. The path loss estimation of the sugar plant environment is found to be 25 % higher than that of the multistoried building.

Pseudomonas asiatica is a recently proposed species of the genus Pseudomonas. This study describes eight isolates of carbapenem-resistant P. asiatica harboring bla(NDM-1) and bla(VIM-2), genes encoding metallo-β-lactamase (MBL). These isolates were obtained from urine samples of patients hospitalized in Myanmar. These isolates were resistant to carbapenems but susceptible to colistin. All eight isolates were positive for a carbapenemase inactivation method, CIMTrisII, and seven were positive on an immunochromatographic assay for NDM-type MBL. One isolate was highly resistant to aminoglycosides. Whole-genome sequencing showed that seven isolates harbored bla(NDM-1) and one harbored bla(VIM-2), with these genes located on the chromosome. One isolate harbored bla(NDM-1) and rmtC, a gene encoding 16S rRNA methylase. Five types of genomic environments surrounding bla(NDM-1) and bla(VIM-2) were detected in these eight isolates, with four isolates having the same type. These data indicate that P. asiatica isolates harboring genes encoding carbapenemases, including bla(NDM-1) and bla(VIM-2), are spreading in medical settings in Myanmar.

In the developed world, acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is rare. When it does arise, symptoms commonly include fever, arthralgia and rash. We describe a presentation of a 3-year-old child with ARF in a UK District General Hospital. The patient had a 6-week history of diarrhoea, rash and intermittent right hip arthralgia. This was initially thought to be a viral illness until she re-presented with shortness of breath and fever with a pan-systolic murmur. A throat-culture was negative, but an anti-streptolysin titre was elevated, with a bedside echocardiogram demonstrating moderate to severe mitral regurgitation. The young child was transferred to the local tertiary centre for further management; however, she went on to develop acute left ventricular failure. This case illustrates the need to be vigilant for the presentation of a rare illness, such as rheumatic fever, as there can be significant impacts on the quality of life of young patients.

Sporadic cases of melioidosis have been diagnosed in Myanmar since the disease was first described in Yangon in 1911. Published and unpublished cases are summarized here, along with results from environmental and serosurveys. A total of 298 cases have been reported from seven states or regions between 1911 and 2018, with the majority of these occurring before 1949. Findings from soil surveys confirm the presence of Burkholderia pseudomallei in the environment in all three regions examined. The true epidemiology of the disease in Myanmar is unknown. Important factors contributing to the current gaps in knowledge are lack of awareness among clinicians and insufficient laboratory diagnostic capacity in many parts of the country. This is likely to have led to substantial under-reporting.

The indoor propagation model is playing an important role in the design and layout of the indoor wireless networks. In this paper, a statistical approach has been developed to take into account the variability in the different locations of the transmitter to analyze the path loss values through the walls based on the existing multiwall and multifloor model with the Fresnel Transmission Coefficient. The important statistical parameters such as mean, standard deviation and cumulative distribution function of the multifloored building with the operating frequency at 2.4 GHz are investigated by using the experimental path loss through multiple floors and walls of the multifloored building. The mean and standard deviation values are different due to the layout of the corridors and the standard deviation values are also changed. The mean values through two floors are between 111 and 118 and the standard deviation values are between 3 and 5. The mean values through two floors are more than the mean values through one floor and same floor based on the path loss values when the number of the floors between the transmitter and receiver are increased.

Indoor wireless communication is useful design tool in constructing the efficient wireless network. The path loss estimation of an indoor environment operating at 2.4 GHz is studied by applying the path loss prediction model. The additional path loss (in decibels) caused by the floors between transmitter and receiver in four corridors are predicted by measuring in each floor of Mandalay Technological University (MTU). For same floor measurements, the path loss prediction is small and the standard deviation (σ) is 2.7 dB. When the transmitter is fixed and the receiver is through one floor, the path loss increases and σ is 4.1 dB. In the next situation, the receiver passes through two floors, the path loss is the highest than the other situations and σ is 5.4 dB in corridor1 in MTU. The path loss prediction of the floors increases when the number of floors between the transmitter and receiver is increasing. This indoor path loss prediction model compares the experimental results in different situations of the receiver in indoor wireless network.

International audience; Primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) is a major cause of blindness worldwide. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) followed by replication in a combined total of 10,503 PACG cases and 29,567 controls drawn from 24 countries across Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. We observed significant evidence of disease association at five new genetic loci upon meta-analysis of all patient collections. These loci are at EPDR1 rs3816415 (odds ratio (OR) = 1.24, P = 5.94 × 10(-15)), CHAT rs1258267 (OR = 1.22, P = 2.85 × 10(-16)), GLIS3 rs736893 (OR = 1.18, P = 1.43 × 10(-14)), FERMT2 rs7494379 (OR = 1.14, P = 3.43 × 10(-11)), and DPM2-FAM102A rs3739821 (OR = 1.15, P = 8.32 × 10(-12)). We also confirmed significant association at three previously described loci (P < 5 × 10(-8) for each sentinel SNP at PLEKHA7, COL11A1, and PCMTD1-ST18), providing new insights into the biology of PACG.

To determine the causes of visual impairment and blindness amongst children in schools for the blind in Myanmar; to identify the avoidable causes of visual impairment and blindness; and to provide spectacles, low vision aids, orientation and mobility training and ophthalmic treatment where indicated.Two hundred and eight children under 16 years of age from all 7 schools for the blind in Myanmar were examined and the data entered into the World Health Organization Prevention of Blindness Examination Record for Childhood Blindness (WHO/PBL ERCB).One hundred and ninety nine children (95.7%) were blind (BL = Visual Acuity [VA]3/60 in the better eye) and 3 had severe visual impairment (SVI = VA6/60 to 3/60 in the better eye). Most children had corneal abnormalities as the major anatomical site of SVI/BL (100, 49.5%), however the cause of SVI/BL was unknown in the majority (88, 43.6%). Measles keratitis was the commonest identifiable cause (17.4%) and 88 children had avoidable causes of SVI/BL (43.6%). Nearly 16% of children required an optical device and 24.2% required medical attention, with a potential for visual improvement through intervention in 15.8%.Nearly half of the children in schools for the blind in Myanmar had potentially avoidable causes of SVI/BL. With measles being both the commonest identifiable and commonest avoidable cause, the data supports the need for a measles immunization campaign. There is also a need for a dedicated pediatric eye care center with regular ophthalmology visits to the schools, and improved optometric, low vision and orientation and mobility services in Myanmar.

New investigations of prehistoric sites in Myanmar by a joint Australia - Myanmar team have revealed important rock markings, including the first major cupule site from mainland Southeast Asia.
