Abstract Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a prevalent primary malignant tumor, is notorious for its high mortality rate. Despite advancements in HCC treatment, patient outcomes remain suboptimal. This study endeavors to assess the potential prognostic significance of POLH-AS1 in HCC. Methods In this research, we gathered RNA-Seq information from individuals with HCC in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We analyzed the levels of POLH-AS1 expression in both HCC cells and tissues using statistical tests. Additionally, we examined various prognostic factors in HCC using advanced methodologies. Furthermore, we employed Spearman’s rank correlation analysis to examine the association between POLH-AS1 expression and the tumor’s immune microenvironment. Finally, the functional roles of POLH-AS1 in HCC were validated in two HCC cell lines (HEP3B and HEPG2). Results Our analysis revealed elevated POLH-AS1 expression across various cancers, including HCC, with heightened expression correlating with HCC progression. Notably, POLH-AS1 expression emerged as a potential biomarker for HCC patient survival and prognosis. Mechanistically, we identified the involvement of POLH-AS1 in tumorigenesis pathways such as herpes simplex virus 1 infection, interactions with neuroactive receptors, and the cAMP signaling pathway. Lastly, inhibition of POLH-AS1 was discovered to hinder the proliferation, invasion and migration of HEP3B and HEPG2 HCC cells. Conclusions POLH-AS1 emerges as a promising prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for HCC, offering potential avenues for enhanced patient management and treatment strategies.

To investigate the influence mechanism of the annealing treatment on the intermolecular action of waxy crude oil, this study selected the molecular models of oil, wax, resin and asphaltene, and constructed the model system to imitate instead of the waxy crude oils by using the Materials Studio software, and revealed the influence mechanism of annealing treatment. Three main findings were made: 1) The basic molecular unit structure is the premise of phase transformation, and the different annealing times are the main factors affecting the phase transformation. 2) After annealing treatment, the conformation of molecular chain gradually changes from the initial straight chain to the curly state, and the change is most obvious at the lowest energy; in terms of system energy, the changes of Eval, Enon-bond and Etotal of the three oil samples all increase in different extent during the whole thermal process. 3) In terms of the radial distribution function (RDF) between the identical types of molecules and heterogeneous molecules of waxy crude oil, the accumulation of asphaltenes plays a leading role in the annealing process of waxy crude oil system, and the van der Waals force is the main force.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading age-related disorders worldwide, with their prevalence increasing annually. Cathepsins are protein-degrading enzymes essential for processes such as intracellular protein breakdown, apoptosis, and immune responses. Recent studies suggest a potential link between cathepsins and CVDs, yet the exact causal relationship remains to be elucidated. To address this, we propose using Mendelian randomization (MR) to explore the causal relationships between cathepsins and CVDs.Methods: We obtained single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data for cathepsins from the INTERVAL study, a publicly accessible genome-wide association study (GWAS) dataset. Outcome SNP data were sourced from seven distinct GWAS datasets, ensuring a comprehensive analysis across multiple cardiovascular outcomes. For MR analysis, we primarily employed the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, known for its efficiency when all SNPs are valid instruments. This was supplemented by the weighted median and MR-Egger methods to provide robustness against potential violations of MR assumptions, such as pleiotropy. The IVW method offers precision and efficiency, the weighted median method adds robustness against invalid instruments, and the MR-Egger method helps identify and correct for pleiotropic biases. Cochran’s Q test was utilized to assess heterogeneity, and sensitivity analyses were conducted using MR-PRESSO and the leave-one-out approach.Results: The strength of the associations between exposure and outcome was measured using odds ratios (ORs), and results were presented with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The cathepsin E increases the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) (OR = 1.053%, 95% CI: 1.007–1.101, p = 0.024) and ischemic stroke (IS) (OR = 1.06%, 95% CI: 1.019–1.103, p = 0.004). Conversely, cathepsin L2 decreases the risk of chronic heart failure (CHF) (OR = 0.922%, 95% CI: 0.859–0.99, p = 0.025) and atrial fibrillation (AF) (OR = 0.956%, 95% CI: 0.918–0.996, p = 0.033). Cathepsin O was associated with an increased risk of IS (OR = 1.054%, 95% CI: 1.008–1.102, p = 0.021) and AF (OR = 1.058%, 95% CI: 1.02–1.098, p = 0.002).Conclusion: Our MR analysis reveals that cathepsin E is a risk factor for MI and IS, cathepsin L2 offers protective effects against CHF and AF, and cathepsin O increases the risk for IS and AF.

Study region: The Baiyangdian Lake, Xiong’an New Area of Hebei Province, China. Study focus: The construction of water transfer projects provides feasible measures for lake space and ecology restoration, with a critical issue in this practice being how to efficiently utilize multiple sources of water replenishments to improve the water quality of the water-receiving lakes. This study developed a hydrodynamic and water quality model for the Baiyangdian Lake, which receives water from upstream reservoirs within its basin and from two water transfer projects in other basins. Simulation scenarios with varied proportions of this lake receiving water from these sources were set up in the model, and the optimal water replenishment scheme for the best improvement in water quality was determined. New hydrological insights for the region: The multi-source water replenishment can effectively enhance the environment of the water-receiving lakes, and water transported from other basins has a more positive effect than that released from the local basin; additionally, water quality was found to be more improved during non-flood seasons compared to flood seasons. Under the preferred water replenishment scheme, the average concentrations of ammonia, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus in the core areas all decreased by more than 10%. However, the water replenishment may induce divergence in water quality indicators and aquatic system evolutions in the water-receiving lakes, making the lake environment fragmented. This study proposes to further exploit the water quality improvement benefits of multi-source water replenishments while mitigating its potential risks by enhancing hydrological connectivity in the water-receiving areas and integrating water quality monitoring and mathematical modeling.

Lithium metal anode is almost the ultimate choice for high-energy density rechargeable batteries, but its uneven electrochemical dissolution-deposition characteristics lead to poor cycle stability and lithium dendrites safety problems. The fundamental solution to the problems is to interfere electrodeposition process of lithium metal so that it can be carried out reversibly and stably. In this work, an inverse-opal structured TiO2 membrane with a thickness of only ∼1 μm is designed to regulate the electrodeposition behavior of lithium metal, in which the ordered channels homogenize mass transfer process, the anatase TiO2 walls of the ion channels reduce desolvation barrier of solvated lithium-ions, and the spherical cavities with a diameter of ∼300 nm confine migration of the adsorbed lithium atoms during electrocrystallization to diminish overpotential of lithium. These systematic effects cover and essentially change the whole process of electrodeposition of lithium metal and eliminate the possibility of lithium dendrite formation. The as-obtained lithium metal electrode delivers a Coulombic efficiency of 99.86% in the 100th cycle, and maintains a low deposition overpotential of 0.01 V for 800 h.

Abstract Paper‐based devices have attracted considerable attention in point‐of‐care testing (POCT) due to their simple operation and portability. The performance of paper‐based POC assays is further enhanced by coupling with functional nucleic acids (FNAs), which are able to selectively recognize and bind to targets, amplify and transduce signals. Several high‐performance paper‐based POC assays have been developed, resulting from the different spatial structures of the paper‐based device and detection strategies using different FNAs. In this review, we first introduce FNAs and paper‐based devices, including their concepts, classifications and advances. The following section focuses on the application of these FNAs in POC assays using paper‐based devices, taking into account their spatial one‐, two‐ and three‐dimensional structures. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of the application of FNAs in paper‐based POCT are discussed.

Background Childhood maltreatment is associated with internet addiction, but most evidence is from retrospective studies. Aims We aimed to investigate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and internet addiction through a prospective cohort design. Method In a prospective cohort study, self-reported data on childhood maltreatment (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire – Short Form) at baseline, and internet addiction (Revised Chinese Internet Addiction Scale) at baseline and 6-month follow-up, were collected online from 756 Chinese junior middle school students aged 11–15 years and residing in Changsha, Hunan Province. Demographic data and covariates such as depression, anxiety, stress (Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale 21) and insomnia (Athens Insomnia Scale) were also surveyed at baseline. Logistic regression analysis measured the association between childhood maltreatment and internet addiction, and gender-related differences. Results Childhood maltreatment was prevalent in Chinese junior middle school students (37.83%), and the incidence rate of internet addiction was 9.26% at the 6-month follow-up. Emotional abuse was a significant risk factor for internet addiction (adjusted odds ratio 2.618, 95% CI 1.194–5.738; P = 0.016) in both males and females. Conclusions This study suggests a high prevalence of childhood maltreatment in Chinese junior middle school students, and that emotional abuse plays a significant role in internet addiction. More attention should be paid to parenting style and adolescents’ mental health.

At present, farmland abandonment (FA) is a serious problem in China, severely restricting agricultural production. In this context, it is of great significance to explore the logical relationship between high-standard farmland construction (HSFC) and FA to optimize land resource allocation and guarantee national food security. Based on a sample of 838 farmers in the main rice production area of the Yangtze River Basin in China, this study employed the Tobit model, the mediating effect model, and the moderated mediating effect model to analyze the impact of HSFC on FA at the micro level. The results show the following: (1) HSFC inhibits FA and the FA proportion decreases by 1.15% for every 1% increase in the HSFC proportion; the robustness test and endogeneity treatment also yield consistent conclusions. (2) The inhibitory effect of HSFC on FA varies greatly among different farmers and is more significant for part-time farmers and those with a higher degree of land fragmentation. (3) Agricultural socialization services (ASS) play a positive mediating role in the influence path. HSFC promotes the farmers’ purchase of ASS, which in turn inhibits FA. (4) The agricultural labor transfer distance (ALTD) plays a positive moderating role in the relationship between HSFC and FA. The farther the distance, the more likely it is that HSFC can promote the farmers’ purchase of ASS and inhibit FA. The results provide insights regarding how to precisely implement the HSFC policy, i.e., to inhibit FA by improving the construction of high-standard farmland and the post-construction management and protection system. Building targeted construction programs and operational systems that consider the differences in the target groups, improving the standard and capacity of ASS to ensure sustainable benefits for farmers, and promoting the non-agricultural transfer of surplus agricultural labor can create conditions for the modern transformation of the traditional rural economy.

Flexible paper-based materials play a crucial role in the field of flexible electromagnetic shielding due to their thinness and controllable shape. In this study, we employed the wet paper forming technique to prepare carbon fiber paper with a thickness gradient. The electromagnetic shielding performance of the carbon fiber paper varies with the ladder-like thickness distribution. Specifically, an increase in thickness gradient leads to higher reflectance of the carbon fiber paper. Within the X-band frequency range (8.2–12.4 GHz), reflectivity decreases as electromagnetic wave frequency increases, indicating enhanced penetration of electromagnetic waves into the interior of the carbon fiber paper. This enhancement is attributed to an increased fiber content per unit area resulting from a greater thickness gradient, which further enhances reflection loss and promotes internal multiple reflections and scattering effects, leading to increased absorption loss. Notably, at a 5 mm thickness, our carbon fiber paper exhibits an impressive average overall shielding performance, reaching 63.46 dB. Moreover, it exhibits notable air permeability and mechanical properties, thereby assuming a pivotal role in the realm of flexible wearable devices in the foreseeable future.

IntroductionInternet addiction (IA) is common among adolescents and may have severe consequences. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with IA among middle school students of Hunan Province, China. Relevance between IA and childhood trauma was also explored.MethodsOne thousand six hundred ten students were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Data collected included demographics; internet addiction (revised-Chen internet addiction scale); childhood trauma (CTQ-SF); depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms (DASS-21); suicidal behaviors, as well as non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Cramer’s V analysis, univariable logistic regression and multivariable logistic regression were used for associations and identifying independent relevance of IA, respectively.ResultsThe prevalence of IA was 12.8%. Cramer’s V analysis showed that IA was associated with emotional abuse, emotional and physical neglect, NSSI, suicidal behaviors, stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms, physical disorder history. Study region: Baiyangdian Lake, the largest freshwater lake on the North China Plain, is located in Xiong'an New Area of Hebei Province. Study focus: Physical, chemical, and biological reactions are active at the sediment-water interface and have a complex impact on the interfacial transport process. Based on the theory of the effective diffusion coefficient, combined with the analysis of sediment, in-situ observations, and a hydrodynamic model, we built a multi-approach framework to accurately estimate the interfacial mass flux and its temporal and spatial variations. New hydrological insights for the region: The results showed that the NH4+-N release flux across the interface varies between 6.12 and 62.30 mg m−2 d−1. The transport processes in the Nanliuzhuang and Mapeng regions were dominated by the dispersive regime, whereas those in the remaining regions were dominated by the molecular regime. Under extreme weather conditions, such as typhoons, the mass flux is more than five times that under windless conditions. At this time, the framework to estimate the interfacial mass flux based on the effective diffusivity coefficient (FEIMF-EDC) can better reflect the sudden increase in mass flux caused by short-term strong hydrodynamic disturbances. This framework has a good application effect in shallow lakes with obvious spatiotemporal heterogeneity of sediment and hydrodynamics and can provide a basis for accurately formulating plans for water environment monitoring and management.

Abstract MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can act as oncogenes or tumor suppressors, capable of up or down‐regulating gene expression during tumorigenesis; they are diagnostic biomarkers or therapeutic targets for tumors. To detect low abundance of intracellular oncogenic miRNAs (onco‐miRNAs) and realize synergistic gene therapy of onco‐miRNAs and tumor suppressors, a smart nano‐theranostic platform based on dual‐miRNAs guided self‐feedback tetrahedral entropy‐driven DNA circuit is created. The platform as a delivery vehicle is a DNA tetrahedral framework, in which the entropy‐driven DNA circuit achieves a dual‐miRNAs guided self‐feedback, between an in situ amplification of the onco‐miRNAs and activation of suppressor miRNAs release. To test this platform, dual‐miRNAs are selected, miRNA‐155, an up‐regulated miRNA, as cancer indicators, and miRNA‐122, a down‐regulated miRNA as therapy targets in hepatocellular carcinoma, respectively. Through the circuit, the platform to detect onco‐miRNAs at femtomolar level as well as visualized miRNAs inside cells, fixed tissues, and mice is programmed. Furthermore, triggered by miRNA‐155, preloaded miRNA‐122 is amplified via the self‐feedback and released into target cells; the sudden increase of miRNA‐122 and simultaneous decrease of miRNA‐155 synergistically served as therapeutic drugs for gene regulation with enhanced antitumor efficacy and superior biosafety. It is envisioned that this nano‐theranostic platform will initiate an essential step toward tumor theranostics in personalized/precise medicine.

Streptococcus suis can cause severe infections in pigs and humans. The tonsils of pigs are major niches for S. suis, and different serotypes of S. suis can be found in the same tonsil. Pig tonsil colonization by S. suis is believed to be an important source of infection for humans and pigs. However, how S. suis competes for a stable tonsil niche is unknown. Here, we found that S. suis strain WUSS351, isolated from a healthy pig tonsil, is virulent and multidrug-resistant. The ABC transporter system SstFEG, conferring resistance to bacitracin, was reported to confer a competitive survival advantage in vivo. In addition, strain WUSS351 has several antimicrobial systems, including a novel type VII secretion system (T7SS), lantibiotic bacteriocin, and lactococcin972-like bacteriocin Lcn351. Bacterial competition experiments demonstrated T7SS-mediated cell contact-dependent antagonism of S. suis. Antibacterial activity analysis and 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the culture-independent and culture-dependent pig tonsillar microbiome revealed that Lcn351 mainly targets S. suis, one of the core microbiomes in pig tonsils. Taken together, our results revealed the mechanism of the stable persistence of S. suis in the tonsil niche, which might have important implications for S. suis epidemiology, potentially influencing strain prevalence and disease progression.

Background: Glioma patients often experience unfavorable outcomes and elevated mortality rates. Our study established a prognostic signature utilizing cuproptosis-associated long non-coding RNAs (CRLs) and identified novel prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for glioma.Methods: The expression profiles and related data of glioma patients were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas, an accessible online database. We then constructed a prognostic signature using CRLs and evaluated the prognosis of glioma patients by means of Kaplan-Meier survival curves and receiver operating characteristic curves. A nomogram based on clinical features was employed to predict the individual survival probability of glioma patients. Functional enrichment analysis was conducted to identify crucial CRL-related enriched biological pathways. The role of LEF1-AS1 in glioma was validated in two glioma cell lines (T98 and U251).Results: We developed and validated a prognostic model for glioma with 9 CRLs. Patients with low-risk had a considerably longer overall survival (OS). The prognostic CRL signature may serve independently as an indicator of prognosis for glioma patients. In addition, functional enrichment analysis revealed significant enrichment of multiple immunological pathways. Notable differences were observed between the two risk groups in terms of immune cell infiltration, function, and immune checkpoints. We further identified four drugs based on their different IC50 values from the two risk groups. Subsequently, we discovered two molecular subtypes of glioma (cluster one and cluster two), with the cluster one subtype exhibiting a remarkably longer OS compared to the cluster two subtype. Finally, we observed that inhibition of LEF1-AS1 curbed the proliferation, migration, and invasion of glioma cells.Conclusion: The CRL signatures were confirmed as a reliable prognostic and therapy response indicator for glioma patients. Inhibition of LEF1-AS1 effectively suppressed the growth, migration, and invasion of gliomas; therefore, LEF1-AS1 presents itself as a promising prognostic biomarker and potential therapeutic target for glioma.

BackgroundFrontotemporal cortex dysfunction has been found to be associated with cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). In patients with adolescent-onset SCZ, a more serious type of SCZ with poorer functional outcome, cognitive impairment appeared to occur at an early stage of the disease. However, the characteristics of frontotemporal cortex involvement in adolescent patients with cognitive impairment are still unclear. In the present study, we aimed to illustrate the frontotemporal hemodynamic response during a cognitive task in adolescents with first-episode SCZ.MethodsAdolescents with first-episode SCZ who were aged 12-17 and demographically matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. We used a 48-channel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system to record the concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) in the participants' frontotemporal area during a verbal fluency task (VFT) and analyzed its correlation with clinical characteristics.ResultsData from 36 adolescents with SCZ and 38 HCs were included in the analyses. Significant differences were found between patients with SCZ and HCs in 24 channels, mainly covering the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, superior and middle temporal gyrus and frontopolar area. Adolescents with SCZ showed no increase of oxy-Hb concentration in most channels, while the VFT performance was comparable between the two groups. In SCZ, the intensity of activation was not associated with the severity of symptoms. Finally, receiver operating characteristic analysis indicated that the changes in oxy-Hb concentration could help distinguish the two groups.ConclusionAdolescents with first-episode SCZ showed atypical cortical activity in the frontotemporal area during the VFT, and fNIRS features might be more sensitive indicators in cognitive assessment, indicating that the characteristic hemodynamic response pattern might be potential imaging biomarkers for this population.

BackgroundCholangiocarcinoma (CHOL) is the most prevalent type of malignancy and the second most common form of primary liver cancer, resulting in high rates of morbidity and mortality. Necroptosis is a type of regulated cell death that appears to be involved in the regulation of several aspects of cancer biology, including tumorigenesis, metastasis, and cancer immunity. This study aimed to construct a necroptosis-related gene (NRG) signature to investigate the prognosis of CHOL patients using an integrated bioinformatics analysis.MethodsCHOL patient data were acquired from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) (GSE89748, GSE107943) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases, with NRGs data from the necroptosis pathway in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to establish the NRG signatures. Kaplan–Meier (KM) curves were used to evaluate the prognosis of patients with CHOL. Functional enrichment analysis was performed to identify key NRG-associated biological signaling pathways. We also applied integrative multi-omics analysis to the high- and low-risk score groups. Spearman’s rank correlation was used to clarify the relationship between the NRG signature and immune infiltration.Results65 differentially expressed (DE) NRGs were screened, five of which were selected to establish the prognostic signature of NRGS based on multivariate Cox regression analysis. We observed that low-risk patients survived significantly longer than high-risk patients. We found that patients with high-risk scores experienced higher immune cell infiltration, drug resistance, and more somatic mutations than patients with low-risk scores. We further found that sensitivities to GW843682X, mitomycin C, rapamycin, and S-trityl-L-cysteine were significantly higher in the low-risk group than in the high-risk group. Finally, we validated the expression of five NRGs in CHOL tissues using the TCGA database, HPA database and our clinical data.ConclusionThese findings demonstrate that the five-NRG prognostic signature for CHOL patients is reasonably accurate and valid, and it may prove to be of considerable value for the treatment and prognosis of CHOL patients in the future.

Escherichia coli cysteine desulfurase (CD), IscS, modifies basal metabolism by transferring sulphur (S) from L-cysteine to numerous cellular pathways, whereas NFS1, a human CD, is active only in the formation of the [Acp]2:[ISD11]2:[NFS1]2 complex. Despite the accumulation of red-coloured IscS in E. coli cells as a result of the deficiency of accessible iron, as revealed in our previous studies, the mechanism of the potential enzymatic reaction remains unclear. In this study, the N-terminus of IscS was fused with the C-terminus of NFS1, which was reported to be almost fully active as IscS and exhibits a pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP) absorption peak at 395 nm. Moreover, SUMO-EH-IscS exhibited significant growth recovery and NADH-dehydrogenase I activity in the iscS mutant cells. Furthermore, through in vitro and in vivo experiments combined with high-performance liquid chromatography and ultra-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry, it was shown that the new absorption peaks of the IscS H104Q, IscS Q183E, IscS K206A, and IscS K206A&C328S variants at 340 and 350 nm may correspond to the enzyme reaction intermediates, Cys-ketimine and Cys-aldimine, respectively. However, after mutation of the conserved active-site residues, additional absorption peaks at 420 and 430 nm were associated with PLP migration in the active-site pocket. Additionally, the corresponding absorption peaks of Cys-quinonoid, Ala-ketimine, and Ala-aldimine intermediates in IscS were 510, 325, and 345 nm, respectively, as determined by site-directed mutagenesis and substrate/product-binding analyses during the CD reaction process. Notably, red IscS formed in vitro by incubating IscS variants (Q183E and K206A) with excess L-alanine and sulphide under aerobic conditions produced an absorption peak similar to the wild-type IscS, at 510 nm. Interestingly, site-directed mutation of IscS with hydrogen bonds to PLP at Asp180 and Gln183 resulted in a loss of enzymatic activity followed by an absorption peak consistent with NFS1 (420 nm). Furthermore, mutations at Asp180 or Lys206 inhibited the reaction of IscS in vitro with L-cysteine (substrate) and L-alanine (product). These results suggest that the conserved active site residues (His104, Asp180, and Gln183) and their hydrogen bond with PLP in the N-terminus of IscS play a key role in determining whether the L-cysteine substrate can enter the active-site pocket and regulate the enzymatic reaction process. Therefore, our findings provide a framework for evaluating the roles of conserved active-site residues, motifs, and domains in CDs.

ObjectivesCyberbullying is quite common in adolescents and college students, and it influences mental health in many aspects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of cyberbullying in Chinese college students and to look for related factors.MethodsEight thousand and ninety-eight college students aged 17–26 were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. We collected information of their sociodemographic data, depression (evaluated by Self-Rating Depression Scale), anxiety (evaluated by Self-Rating Anxiety Scale), lifetime suicidal behaviors (including suicidal ideation, suicidal plans, and suicide attempts), and experiences of cyberbullying for the past 12 months by online questionnaires.ResultsThe prevalence of cyberbullying for the past 12 months was 7.82% (633/8,098) among college students. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that sex (odds ratio, OR = 0.522, 95%CI = 0.433–0.629, p < 0.001), suicide attempts (OR = 2.164, 95%CI = 1.589–2.948, p < 0.001), depression (OR = 2.372, 95%CI = 1.602–3.512, p < 0.001), and anxiety (OR = 1.911, 95%CI = 1.305–2.800, p = 0.001) were independently associated with cyberbullying.ConclusionCyberbullying is very common among college students in Hunan Province, China. Besides, being male, suicide attempts, depression and anxiety were independently associated with cyberbullying, which highlights the importance of paying attention to cyberbullying and addressing anxiety, depression, and suicidal behaviors among college students to better improve their mental health and prevent suicide.

Background: The GAP Activity Towards Rags 1 (GATOR1) complex, which includes DEPDC5, NPRL2, and NPRL3, plays a key role in epilepsy. It has been reported that focal epilepsy is associated with mutations in the NPRL3 gene in some cases. We report two rare mutations in the NPRL3 gene in two unrelated Chinese families with focal epilepsy in this study.Methods: The proband and her brother in family E1 first experienced seizures at 1.5 and 6 years of age, respectively. Despite resection of epileptogenic foci, she still suffered recurrent seizures. The first seizure of a 20-year-old male proband in family E2 occurred when he was 2 years old. To identify pathogenic variants in these families, whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed on genomic DNA from peripheral blood.Results: In family E1, the trio-WES analysis of the proband and her brother without apparent structural brain abnormalities identified a heterozygous variant in the NPRL3 gene (c.954C>A, p.Y318*, NM_001077350.3). In family E2, the proband carried a heterozygous NPRL3 mutation (c.1545-1G>C, NM_001077350.3). Surprisingly, the mothers of the two probands each carried the variants, but neither had an attack. Bioinformatics analysis predicted that the mutation (c.954C>A) was in the highly conserved amino acid residues of NPRL3, which affected the α-helix of NPRL3 protein, leading to a truncated protein. The splice variant (c.1545-1G>C) resulted in the loss of the last exon of the NPRL3 gene.Conclusion: The results of this study provide a foundation for diagnosing NPRL3-related epilepsy by enriching their genotypes and phenotypes and help us identify the genetic etiologies of epilepsy in these two families.

Abstract Background Minimally invasive facial cosmetic surgery (MIFCS) is becoming more and more popular and acceptable in Chinese young people, and it influences people in many aspects. However, there is little research on the associations between MIFCS and psychopathology in Chinese college students. The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of MIFCS and its associated factors among Chinese college students. Methods A cross-sectional design was applied in this study. A total of 8089 students completed an online questionnaire on demographic data, depressive symptoms (Self-Rating Depression Scale), anxiety symptoms (Self-Rating Anxiety Scale) and MIFCS. Logistic regression was used to identify independent factors associated with MIFCS. Results The prevalence of MIFCS in Chinese college students was 2.7% (221/8098). BackgroundRyanodine receptor 2 (RYR2) encodes a component of a calcium channel. RYR2 variants were well-reported to be associated with catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT), but rarely reported in epilepsy cases. Here, we present a novel heterozygous mutation of RYR2 in a child with focal epilepsy.MethodsAt the age of 2 years and 7 months, the patient experienced seizures, such as eye closure, tooth clenching, clonic jerking and hemifacial spasm, as well as abnormal electroencephalogram (EEG). Then, he was analyzed by whole-exome sequencing (WES). The mutations of both the proband and his parents were further confirmed by Sanger sequencing. The pathogenicity of the variant was further assessed by population-based variant frequency screening, evolutionary conservation comparison, and American Association for Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) scoring.ResultsWES sequencing revealed a novel heterozygous truncating mutation [c.12670G > T, p.(Glu4224*), NM_001035.3] in RYR2 gene of the proband. Sanger sequencing confirmed that this mutation was inherited from his mother. This novel variant was predicted to be damaging by different bioinformatics methods. Cardiac investigation showed that the proband had no structural abnormalities, but sinus tachycardia.ConclusionWe proposed that RYR2 is a potential candidate gene for focal epilepsy, and epilepsy patients carried with RYR2 variants should be given more attention, even if they do not show cardiac abnormalities

Study region: Daheiting Reservoir, Tangshan, China Study focus: Based on the recently sprouted high-frequency measurement of water temperature, an objective identification method for thermal structures is proposed, and the optimal thermal threshold of the Daheiting Reservoir is further determined. Then, this optimal threshold is adopted to identify the temporal and spatial evolutions of thermal structures combined with routine measurements. New hydrological insights for the region: The optimal thermal threshold of the Daheiting Reservoir is determined to be 1.5 °C·m−1. The identification result suggests that the thermal stratification lasted from early May to late October and reached its peak in late July, following the rule of three stages. The temperature differences between air and each stratified layer are decisive for the development direction of thermal structures, and thermocline thickness and average strength could transform into each other during a period ranging from a week to half a month. Moreover, the thermal structure is greatly influenced by the cascade reservoir operations. The cold water discharged from the upper reservoir could significantly alter the thermal structures in the tail region of the study reservoir, where abnormal thermoclines with extraordinary strength occur. In contrast, the water supply operation gently weakens the thermal stratification in the head region of the study reservoir by triggering continuous advection near the outlet.

Hybrid energy storage system (HESS) consisted of battery and supercapacitor plays an essential role in supporting the normal operation of pulse load in vessel integrated power system (IPS) as well as improving power quality. However, due to the unique properties of the pulse load and diversified operations of the vessel, such advanced power system architectures tend to face greater challenges in optimal power allocation. In order to address the power allocation challenges, a novel optimized state-of-charge (SOC) feedback based energy management strategy is proposed for HESS in IPS to restrain the DC bus voltage fluctuation in this paper. Firstly, considering the operating characteristics of the pulse load in IPS, the optimized SOC of the HESS is introduced to the low-pass filter (LPF) with variable time constant to split the power in the HESS. Secondly, SOC recovery control of the supercapacitor is introduced to the LPF to optimize the size of the HESS as well as prolong the lifetime of the battery. Also, the enforced intervention is introduced to avoid the opposite state of the HESS. The proposed strategy can make full use of the HESS complementary characteristics to compensate the pulse load and optimize the HESS. Finally, the simulation conducted in PSCAD demonstrates the effectiveness of the strategy proposed in pulse load compensation as well as HESS optimization.

Background: Recent studies have reported changes in the electroencephalograms (EEG) of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, little research has explored EEG differences between adolescents with MDD and healthy controls, particularly EEG microstates differences. The aim of the current study was to characterize EEG microstate activity in adolescents with MDD and healthy controls (HCs).Methods: A total of 35 adolescents with MDD and 35 HCs were recruited in this study. The depressive symptoms were assessed by Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), and the anxiety symptoms were assessed by Chinese version of DSM-5 Level 2-Anxiety-Child scale. A 64-channel EEG was recorded for 5 min (eye closed, resting-state) and analyzed using microstate analysis. Microstate properties were compared between groups and correlated with patients' depression scores.Results: We found increased occurrence and contribution of microstate B in MDD patients compared to HCs, and decreased occurrence and contribution of microstate D in MDD patients compared to HCs. While no significant correlation between depression severity (HAMD score) and the microstate metrics (occurrence and contribution of microstate B and D) differing between MDD adolescents and HCs was found.Conclusions: Adolescents with MDD showed microstate B and microstate D changes. The obtained results may deepen our understanding of dynamic EEG changes among adolescents with MDD and provide some evidence of changes in brain development in adolescents with MDD.

Hybrid battery energy storage system (HBESS) consists of high power density battery and high energy density battery will have a bright future in special isolated DC microgrid conditions such as the all-electric ships and all-electric airplanes, which have strict limitation on storage capacity and size. In this study, a new decentralised control strategy based on mixed droop is proposed to HBESSs with considering the batteries. In decentralised control strategy, conventional V–I droop controller is utilised to high energy density battery to mainly supply the steady power, I–V droop controller is utilised to high power density battery to respond to power change and supply a few steady power. In addition, dynamical state-of-charge (SoC) regulation algorithm is utilised to reassign the battery power according to their own SoC. The power coordination of the high energy density batteries and high discharge rate batteries is achieved by adjusting the values virtual impedance and reference input voltage. Case study shows that the proposed control strategy is flexible and efficient.

The vertical pipe inlet/outlet, with a horizontal plate widely used in the pumped storage plant, has the characteristics of complex two-direction flow. The experiment was conducted on the original shape at different discharges. Compared with the experimental results, the current study presents a three-dimension numerical investigation of the turbulent flow in the vertical pipe inlet/outlet using the realizable k-ϵ model. The hydraulic characteristics such as velocity distribution and head losses of the vertical pipe inlet/outlet in different diversion orifices heights and divergence angles have been analysed. The results show that the conditions of pumping mode and generating mode cannot satisfy the optimal hydraulic condition at the same time. Finally, the better value ranges of the diversion orifices height and the divergence angle are proposed taking into account the head losses, the maximum velocity of the diversion orifices and the height of the reverse flow zone.

Carbon nitride (CNx) films supported on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass are prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering, in which the film thicknesses are 90â100 nm, and the element components in the CNx films are in the range of x = 0.15â0.25. The as-prepared CNx is for the first time used as counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), and show a preparation-temperature dependent electrochemical performance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrates that there is a higher proportion of sp2 Cî…C and sp3 Cî¸N hybridized bonds in CNx-500 (the sample treated at 500 °C) than in CNx-RT (the sample without a heat treatment). It is proposed that the sp2 Cî…C and sp3 CâN hybridized bonds in the CNx films are helpful for improving the electrocatalytic activities in DSSCs. Meanwhile, Raman spectra also prove that CNx-500 has a relatively high graphitization level that means an increasing electrical conductivity. This further explains why the sample after the heat treatment has a higher electrochemical performance in DSSCs. In addition, the as-prepared CNx counter electrodes have a good light transmittance in the visible light region. The results are meaningful for developing low-cost metal-free transparent counter electrodes for DSSCs. The network reconfiguration of a vessel power system (VPS) is one of the most important approaches to restore its power supply and improve its survivability. The current research on the reconfiguration mainly focuses on the selection and optimisation of recovery paths, with little consideration of the influence of recovery time series. The limited capacity of the VPS, many loads of the motor load and large starting current have a great impact on the electric-energy quality of the power system. Therefore, the different recovery time series will affect the system performance and the recovery rate. The effect of the different recovery time series on the network reconfiguration and fault control has been analysed through the simulation of target network to determine the corresponding relationship between the residual power-supply capacity, the load recovery time series and the recovery rate, which can provide the basis of studying an optimal recovery strategy.

The conversion of CO2 to valuable substances (methane, methanol, formic acid, etc.) by photocatalytic reduction has important significance for both the sustainable energy supply and clean environment technologies. This review systematically summarized recent progress in this field and pointed out the current challenges of photocatalytic CO2 reduction while using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based materials. Firstly, we described the unique advantages of MOFs based materials for photocatalytic reduction of CO2 and its capacity to solve the existing problems. Subsequently, the latest research progress in photocatalytic CO2 reduction has been documented in detail. The catalytic reaction process, conversion efficiency, as well as the product selectivity of photocatalytic CO2 reduction while using MOFs based materials are thoroughly discussed. Specifically, in this review paper, we provide the catalytic mechanism of CO2 reduction with the aid of electronic structure investigations. Finally, the future development trend and prospect of photocatalytic CO2 reduction are anticipated.

Selective withdrawal from a thermal stratified reservoir has been widely utilized in managing reservoir water withdrawal. Besides theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, model test was also necessary in studying the temperature of withdrawn water. However, information on the similarity theory of the withdrawn water temperature model remains lacking. Considering flow features of selective withdrawal, the similarity theory of the withdrawn water temperature model was analyzed theoretically based on the modification of governing equations, the Boussinesq approximation, and some simplifications. The similarity conditions between the model and the prototype were suggested. The conversion of withdrawn water temperature between the model and the prototype was proposed. Meanwhile, the fundamental theory of temperature distribution conversion was firstly proposed, which could significantly improve the experiment efficiency when the basic temperature of the model was different from the prototype. Based on the similarity theory, an experiment was performed on the withdrawn water temperature which was verified by numerical method.

Side-type orifice intake is a type of selective withdrawal facility used in managing reservoirs to mitigate the negative effects of low-temperature water. Based on the temperature data of a thermal stratified reservoir in China, an experiment was conducted in flume to study the influence of intake flow rate on withdrawn water temperature with different temperature distributions. Results indicated that withdrawn water temperature changed with different flow rates. The temperature change was determined by the water temperature gradients above and below the intake, whereas the change trend of temperature depended on the difference between the water temperature gradient above and below the intake. We likewise proposed a new equation with which the withdrawn water temperature of a thermal stratified reservoir using a side-type orifice could be calculated. These findings could be directly applied to the design and operation of side-type orifice intake in thermal stratified reservoirs.

Lithium metal anode is almost the ultimate choice for high-energy density rechargeable batteries, but its uneven electrochemical dissolutiondeposition characteristics lead to poor cycle stability and lithium dendrites safety problems. The fundamental solution to the problems is to interfere electrodeposition process of lithium metal so that it can be carried out reversibly and stably. In this work, an inverse-opal structured TiO2 membrane with a thickness of only ~1 mm is designed to regulate the electrodeposition behavior of lithium metal, in which the ordered channels homogenize mass transfer process, the anatase TiO2 walls of the ion channels reduce desolvation barrier of solvated lithium-ions, and the spherical cavities with a diameter of ~300 nm confine migration of the adsorbed lithium atoms during electrocrystallization to diminish overpotential of lithium. These systematic effects cover and essentially change the whole process of electrodeposition of lithium metal and eliminate the possibility of lithium dendrite formation. The as-obtained lithium metal electrode delivers a Coulombic efficiency of 99.86% in the 100th cycle, and maintains a low deposition overpotential of 0.01 V for 800 h. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
