Abstract

Central sensitization and network hyperexcitability of the nociceptive system is a basic mechanism of neuropathic pain. We hypothesize that development of cortical hyperexcitability underlying neuropathic pain may involve homeostatic plasticity in response to lesion-induced somatosensory deprivation and activity loss, and can be controlled by enhancing cortical activity. In a mouse model of neuropathic pain, in vivo two-photon imaging and patch clamp recording showed initial loss and subsequent recovery and enhancement of spontaneous firings of somatosensory cortical pyramidal neurons. Unilateral optogenetic stimulation of cortical pyramidal neurons both prevented and reduced pain-like behavior as detected by bilateral mechanical hypersensitivity of hindlimbs, but corpus callosotomy eliminated the analgesic effect that was ipsilateral, but not contralateral, to optogenetic stimulation, suggesting involvement of inter-hemispheric excitatory drive in this effect. Enhancing activity by focally blocking cortical GABAergic inhibition had a similar relieving effect on the pain-like behavior. Patch clamp recordings from layer V pyramidal neurons showed that optogenetic stimulation normalized cortical hyperexcitability through changing neuronal membrane properties and reducing frequency of excitatory postsynaptic events. We conclude that development of neuropathic pain involves abnormal homeostatic activity regulation of somatosensory cortex, and that enhancing cortical excitatory activity may be a novel strategy for preventing and controlling neuropathic pain. more...

19. Sequence Design for Cognitive CDMA Communications under Arbitrary Spectrum Hole Constraint

Abstract

To support interference-free quasi-synchronous code-division multiple-access (QS-CDMA) communication with low spectral density profile in a cognitive radio (CR) network, it is desirable to design a set of CDMA spreading sequences with zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) property. However, traditional ZCZ sequences (which assume the availability of the entire spectral band) cannot be used because their orthogonality will be destroyed by the spectrum hole constraint in a CR channel. To date, analytical construction of ZCZ CR sequences remains open. Taking advantage of the Kronecker sequence property, a novel family of sequences (called "quasi-ZCZ" CR sequences) which displays zero cross-correlation and near-zero auto-correlation zone property under arbitrary spectrum hole constraint is presented in this paper. Furthermore, a novel algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and the periodic auto-correlations of the proposed quasi-ZCZ CR sequences. Abstract

Device-to-device(D2D) underlaying communication brings great benefits to the cellular networks from the improvement of coverage and spectral efficiency at the expense of complicated transceiver design. With frequency spectrum sharing mode, the D2D user generates interference to the existing cellular networks either in downlink or uplink. Thus the resource allocation for D2D pairs should be designed properly in order to reduce possible interference, in particular for uplink. In this paper, we introduce a novel bandwidth allocation scheme to maximize the utilities of both D2D users and cellular users. Since the allocation problem is strongly NP-hard, we apply a relaxation to the association indicators. We propose a low-complexity distributed algorithm and prove the convergence in a static environment. The numerical result shows that the proposed scheme can significant improve the performance in terms of utilities.The performance of D2D communications depends on D2D user locations, the number of D2D users and QoS(Quality of Service) parameters. more...

Abstract

As a revolutionary technology for future wireless communications, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), characterized by an efficient way of manipulating wireless signals, has been widely investigated in recent years toward enhancing signal quality, energy efficiency, throughput, and so on. However, in RIS-assisted Internet of Things (IoT), a new issue as multipath separation emerges, especially, when deploying multiple RISs to assist communication, since the devices may have limited signal processing capabilities. For alleviating this problem, we conceive a novel RIS-enabled code-division multiple access (CDMA) structure, where each RIS holds a specified time-varying coefficient to tag the channel. Moreover, multipath extraction is further considered, including a practical channel estimation approach along with theoretical derivations in terms of Cramér-Rao lower bound, mean-square error, as well as ergodic channel capacity. Abstract

Recently, communications with the aid of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which operates with the aim of enhancing the system communication performance, have aroused extensive researches. Furthermore, the use of RIS for positioning has been considered. Therefore, we focus on a practical structure of indoor positioning assisted by distributed RISs through utilizing their ability to manipulate multipath signals, through the developed quasi-static and dynamic modes. Specifically, in the quasi-static mode, for reducing the implementation cost, the reflection coefficients for each RIS are preset and remain constant. In the dynamic mode, the reflection coefficients can be timely updated with a two-step positioning approach toward more accurate positioning performance. Furthermore, the Cramer-Rao lower bound of the developed positioning scheme is quantified through theoretical analysis. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that RIS has the potential to realize accurate positioning even with a single access point, due to its ability to mark the channel and replace traditional active positioning anchors. 39. Fast MIMO Blind Detection via Modified MMA Approach Over the Stiefel Manifold

Abstract

MIMO blind detection has recently attracted much attention due to its potential for the huge training overhead reduction. However, the unsatisfactory performance and slow running speed limit its practical applications. Motivated by this, this letter proposes a manifold optimization aid modified multi-modulus algorithm (MO- $\text{M}^{3}\text{A}$ ) to address this problem. Specifically, by analyzing the interference of the multi-modulus algorithm (MMA) loss function, a novel weighted multi-modulus loss function is proposed to mitigate the original MMA loss interference for better signal recovery. Moreover, restricting the solution to the Stiefel manifold simplifies the problem, and the iteration is significantly faster by using the Riemannian gradient method. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MO- $\text{M}^{3}\text{A}$ affords a more satisfactory bit error rate (BER) and a lower processing burden compared with those of the conventional methods. more...
