Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is highlighted as a target for anticancer treatment. Several EGFR inhibitors were approved in cancer treatment. Comparatively, 5D-QSAR is a new methodology which considers an ensemble of different induced-fit models. Based on 1H-pyrazole derivatives as EGFR inhibitors, a 5D-QSAR was studied in which the method of quasi-atomistic receptor surface modeling was used. The presented QSAR model showed contributions of the hydrogen bond acceptor, and hydrophobic and salt bridge fields to the activity. The QSAR model was statistically validated and also externally validated applying 19 compounds (test set) which were not included in the model generation process. The scramble tests were performed to further verify the robustness. Apart from exploration of the binding of 1H-pyrazole derivatives to the EGFR, the 5D-QSAR model can be helpful to design of new EGFR inhibitors. The five-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (5D-QSAR) of 1H-pyrazole derivatives as EGFR inhibitors with quasi-atomistic receptor surface modeling approach is described.

The dysbiosis of gut microbiota is closely related to the occurrence and development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The manipulation of intestinal flora through prebiotics or probiotics is expected to induce and maintain the remission of IBD symptoms. 6-week-old C57BL/J mice were daily gavaged with fructooligosaccharides (FOS) or the synbiotic two weeks before the administration of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). The supplementation of FOS or synbiotic could significantly ameliorate the body weight loss and colon histological damage in DSS-induced acute colitis mice. The altered composition of gut microbiota in acute colitis mice was reversed by FOS or Synbiotic supplementation, with a characteristic of decreased abundance of Mucispirillum. Both FOS and synbiotic mitigated DSS-induced loss of mucus protein (MUC2) and epithelium tight junction proteins (ZO-1, Occluding, Claudin1) in colon mucosa. The expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-α) was decreased by FOS or synbiotic treatment, while the expression of Tbx21 and IL-10 was increased. The results suggested that the modulation of gut microbiota by FOS or synbiotic supplementation could decrease the inflammation potential of colonized commensals, which prevented the impairment of the intestinal barrier and induced a regulation of immune response in DSS-induced acute colitis mice.

Because the total gene copy number remains constant and all genes are normally expressed, carriers of balanced chromosomal translocations usually have a normal phenotype but are able to produce many different types of gametes during meiosis, and unbalanced gametes lead to increased risks of infertility, recurrent spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, neonatal death or malformations and intellectual abnormalities in offspring. The key to balanced translocations lies in finding the breakpoints, but current genetic testing techniques are all short-read sequencing, with the disadvantage of procedural complexity and imprecision for precisely identifying the breakpoints. The latest third-generation sequencing technology overcomes these drawbacks and uses robust long-read sequencing to accurately and rapidly detect genome-wide information and identify breakpoint locations. In this paper, we performed whole genome long-read sequencing using an Oxford Nanopore sequencer to detect the breakpoints of 4 balanced chromosomal translocation carriers. The results showed that employing about ~ 10× coverage confirmed 6 of the 8 breakpoints, of which, 2 had microdeletions/insertions identified near the breakpoints and 4 had breakpoints that disrupted the normal gene structure and were simultaneously tested for genome-wide structural variation (SV). The results show that whole genome long-read sequencing is an efficient method for pinpointing translocation breakpoints and providing genome-wide information, which is essential for medical genetics and preimplantation genetic testing.

Epidermal growth factor receptor is a preferred target for treating cancer. Compared to 3D-QSAR, 4D-QSAR has the feature of conformational flexibility and free alignment for individual ligands. In present studies, the 4D-QSAR of 131 analogs of 4-anilino quinazoline for EGFR inhibitors was built. The GROMACS package was employed to yield the conformational ensemble profile. The field descriptors of Coulomb and Lennard−Jones potentials were calculated by LQTA-QSAR. The filter descriptors and variable selection is very important, which was performed by means of comparative distribution detection algorithm (CDDA), ordered predictors selection (OPS) and genetic algorithm (GA) method. Best 4D-QSAR model yielded satisfactory statistics (R2 = 0.71), good performance in internal (Q2LOO = 0.60) and external prediction (R2pred = 0.69, k = 0.97, k′ = 1.01). The 4D-QSAR was shown to be robust (Q2LMO = 0.59) and was not built by chance (R2YS = 0.17, Q2YS = −0.25). The model has a good potential for rational design new EGFR inhibitors.

A method for measuring the central wavelength and bandwidth of a light emitting diode (LED) using the Michelson interferometer is proposed. It is easy to see the interference fringes on the screen by setting the optical path properly. Based on it, the central wavelength and bandwidth of LEDs with three different colours are measured, and the experimental results are consistent with the results from a spectrometer. The experiment will be helpful for students to understand the spectral and coherence characteristics of LEDs. It can also be an extended content of Michelson interferometer.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most common type of cancer among females worldwide and is associated with poor prognosis. Poly ADP-ribose polymerase-1 (PARP1) inhibitors are effective against TNBC with mutations in the breast cancer type 1 susceptibility protein (BRCA1) and/or BRCA2 genes; however, the development of resistance to PARP1 inhibitors limits their use. Thus, identifying strategies to overcome this resistance is urgently required. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential function and mechanism of small interfering (si)RNA-MAPK4 (siMAPK4) in enhancing the efficacy of a PARP1 inhibitor and reducing the resistance. In the present study, data on the mRNA expression level of MAPK4 in normal breast tissues and TNBC tissues were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas database. The mRNA and protein expression levels of MAPK4 in normal breast cells and TNBC cells were analyzed using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blotting, respectively. The phosphorylated (p) histone H2AX (γH2AX) protein expression was assessed via immunofluorescence. Cell Counting Kit-8, wound healing and TUNEL assays were used to determine the proliferative, migratory and apoptotic abilities of HCC1937 cells. MAPK4 was highly expressed in TNBC patient tissues and cell lines. Moreover, overexpression of MAPK4 could promote HCC1937 cell proliferation. Treatment of HCC1937 cells with the combination of siMAPK4 and a PARP1 inhibitor olaparib decreased their proliferation and migration and increased their apoptosis. The protein expression levels of the DNA repair-related proteins p-DNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PK) and RAD51 recombinase (RAD51) were inhibited in the siMAPK4 and siMAPK4 + olaparib groups. However, the marker of a double-stranded break γH2AX showed increased protein expression in the siMAPK4 + olaparib group. As MAPK4 could phosphorylate AKT at threonine 308 (AKTT308), the current study restored p-AKTT308 using a constitutively active AKT plasmid (AKT-CA). p-DNA-PK and RAD51 showed high expression and γH2AX exhibited lower protein expression in the AKT-CA group. The present findings suggested that siMAPK4 can enhance the sensitivity of TNBC cells to PARP1 inhibitors.

ObjectiveTo provide an accurate assessment of the prevalence of breast fibroadenoma in a large population and to confirm the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound for fibroadenoma.DesignThis was a cross-sectional survey.SettingThis research was conducted at Nanfang Hospital, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.ParticipantsA total of 11 898 women aged 18–40 years who underwent breast screening between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2019 were included in the fibroadenoma prevalence study. From 1 June 2019 to 31 December 2019, 342 breast lesions with pathology reports and preoperative ultrasound images were collected for diagnostic fibroadenoma testing (vs histological diagnostic testing).Primary outcome measuresPearson’s χ2 test was performed to compare the prevalence of different lesions between age groups, and descriptive statistics were used to report the clinical characteristics of fibroadenoma. For ultrasound diagnosis, fibroadenoma was defined as a well-circumscribed lesion with round or oval shape, consisting of a homogeneously hypoechoic or isoechoic solid mass, located parallel to the chest wall with a smooth margin and no posterior shadowing. Diagnostic test results for breast fibroadenoma were stratified by diagnostic type (histological vs ultrasound).ResultsOf the women aged 18–40 years, 27.6% (3285/11 898) had an ultrasound diagnosis offibroadenoma. Of these, the prevalence of fibroadenoma was stable across age groups (p=0.14) and did not differ between the left and right sides of the breast. Almost two-thirds of women presented with a single fibroadenoma, and most fibroadenomas did not exceed 1 cm in size. The sensitivity and specificity for fibroadenoma were 97.0% (95% CI for sensitivity: 93.7% to 98.8%) and 91.4% (95% CI for specificity: 85.4% to 95.5%) for ultrasonography, respectively.ConclusionsThe prevalence of fibroadenoma in South China is as high as 27.6%, and ultrasound could be used as a tool to diagnose fibroadenoma.

Background: To explore the application of nursing practice combined with scene simulation teaching mode in standardized training and teaching for newly recruited nurses in Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and its impact on their emergency response ability and competence. Methods: From Jan 2019 to Jan 2020, a total of 120 PACU nurses with professional qualification certificates in West China Hospital Sichuan University, Chengdu, China were enrolled and randomized into group A (n=60) and group B (n=60). Conventional standardized PACU training and teaching was applied in group B, and nursing practice combined with scene simulation teaching mode was applied in group A. After training for 12 weeks, the examination scores, competence and emergency response ability in the two groups were compared. BackgroundPhosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate-binding protein GOLPH3L is overexpressed in human ductal carcinoma of the breast, and its expression levels correlate with the prognosis of breast cancer patients. However, the roles of GOLPH3L in breast tumorigenesis remain unclear.MethodsWe assessed the expression and biological function of GOLPH3L in breast cancer by combining bioinformatic prediction, metabolomics analysis and RNA-seq to determine the GOLPH3L-related pathways involved in tumorigenesis. Dual-luciferase reporter assay and coimmunoprecipitation (Co-IP) were used to explore the expression regulation mechanism of GOLPH3L.ResultsWe demonstrated that knockdown of GOLPH3L in human breast cancer cells significantly suppressed their proliferation, survival, and migration and suppressed tumor growth in vivo, while overexpression of GOLPH3L promoted aggressive tumorigenic activities. We found that miRNA-1185-2-3p, the expression of which is decreased in human breast cancers and is inversely correlated with the prognosis of breast cancer patients, is directly involved in suppressing the expression of GOLPH3L. Metabolomics microarray analysis and transcriptome sequencing analysis revealed that GOLPH3L promotes central carbon metabolism in breast cancer by stabilizing the p53 suppressor SERPINE1.ConclusionsIn summary, we discovered a miRNA-GOLPH3L-SERPINE1 pathway that plays important roles in the metabolism of breast cancer and provides new therapeutic targets for human breast cancer.

Background The feasibility and safety of administrating a small amount of oral fluid to children in the early recovery period following tonsillectomy under general anesthesia to reduce the thirst and its associated restlessness remain unknown. Methods This study was approved by the institutional ethics committee and adhered to the CONSORT guidelines. Pediatric patients undergoing tonsillectomy who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria of our study were randomized into the study and control groups. In the study group, patients were given a small amount of water instantly after recovering from general anesthesia, which included the recovery of the cough and deglutition reflex, and attaining grade V of muscle strength. The control group was given a small amount of water at 4 to 6 h after the operation. The incidence of nausea and vomiting and the degree of thirst relief were measured and compared between the two groups. Results Three hundred patients were randomized into each group. There was no significant difference in the incidence of nausea and vomiting at 20 min after drinking water between the two groups (P > 0.05). The thirst score of children over 5 years old in the study group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P Conclusion Early administration of a small amount of oral fluid to children following tonsillectomy and recovering from general anesthesia is not only safe but also effective in reducing postoperative thirst. Background Oral hydration has typically not been administered for between 4 and 6 h postoperative for children’s safety in China. But children are more likely to suffer from apnea, crying and agitation, wound bleeding, and other complications during the post-anesthesia recovery period because of thirsty and fear. This Prospective, randomized study sought to assess the compare the early and late oral hydration (EOH and DOH, respectively) in children following general anesthesia, with the goal of assessing relative safety and tolerability and thereby improving patient comfort. Methods A total of 2000 children corresponding to the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) I-III were randomized into an EOH group (n = 1000) and a DOH group (n = 1000). For the former group, children were administered a small amount of drinking water following recovery of the swallowing reflex, and children’s vital signs were monitored for 20 min in a postanesthesia care unit (PACU). DOH group patients received water at 4 h following general anesthesia). All patients underwent monitoring to assess their thirst, satisfaction, oropharyngeal discomfort, nausea, and vomiting. Results Complete data were collected from a total of 1770 patients (EOH = 832, DOH = 938) and was compared via chi-squared and t-tests as appropriate. There was no hypoxemia in either group, nor did the incidence of nausea and vomiting differ between the two groups (P > 0.05). The thirst score of the EOH group was significantly decreased relative to the DOH group in the children over 5 years old after drinking for 10 to 20 min (P Conclusions For children undergoing general anesthesia, a small amount of drinking water in the early stages of recovery will not increase the incidence of nausea, vomiting, or hypoxemia, but will decrease thirst and improve satisfaction. It is important, however, that medical staff carefully monitor the swallowing reflex and vital signs of all children. The complete mitochondrial genomes of Harpago chiragra and Lambis lambis (Strombidae) were determined with the size of 15,460 bp and 15,481 bp, respectively, and both sequences contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and two rRNAs. H. chiragra and L. lambis have similar mitochondrial features, corresponding to typical gastropod mitochondrial genomes, such as the conserved gene order, a high A + T content (66.22% for H. chiragra and 66.10% for L. lambis), and preference for A + T-rich codons. The start or termination codon of same protein-coding gene in H. chiragra was consistent with that in L. lambis, except for the termination codon of cox1 gene (TAG for H. chiragra and TAA for L. lambis) and the start codon of nad4 (GTG for H. chiragra and ATG for L. lambis). Pairwise sequence alignments detected different degrees of variations in H. chiragra and L. lambis mitochondrial genomes; and the two species had lower levels of genetic distance (0.202 for nucleotide sequence) and closest relationships as compared to Strombus gigas and Oncomelania hupensis. The 13 partitioned nucleotide sequences of protein coding genes of H. chiragra and L. lambis were aligned with representatives of the main lineages of gastropods and their phylogenetic relationships were inferred. H. chiragra and L. lambis share the same gene order as Littorinimorpha species, except Vermetoidea, which demonstrate a gene rearrangement in species. The reconstructed phylogeny supports three major clades within Littorinimorpha: 1) Stromboidea, Tonnoidea, Littorinoidea, and Naticoidea, 2) Rissooidea and Truncatelloidea, and 3) Vermetoidea. In addition, a relaxed molecular clock calibrated with fossils dated the diversification of Strombidae near 112 (44–206) Mya and a possible radiation is detected to occur between 45–75 Mya, providing implications to understand the Cenozoic replacement event (65–135 Mya) of Aporrhaidae by Strombidae.

Background Aberrant methylation is common during the early stage of cancer development. This study was designed to investigate DNA methylation as biomarker for breast cancer. Methods Public database analysis and methylation-specific whole-gene sequencing were conducted to identify methylated biomarkers that would enable early non-invasive diagnosis of breast cancer. Firstly, the data was obtained from the TCGA Database and the Blueprint Epigenome Database. Secondly, methylation-specific whole-gene sequencing was conducted in 10 female patients with early-stage breast cancer and 10 healthy female volunteers from Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University between March 2018 and July 2018. Thirdly, the R language was used for data analysis, and KEGG and DAVID online tool was used for annotations. Results We found that methylation levels at 13 cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites (cg04066177, cg04281344, cg05995576, cg06221609, cg08642731, cg11388802, cg12665414, cg14557216, cg19404723, cg19457909, cg24570211, cg25818763, and cg26215982) in the malignant tissue DNA were highly comparable to those of circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) of breast cancer patients, but were significantly different from those of normal tissue DNA, cfDNA of healthy women, and leukocyte DNA. In addition, three CpG sites (cg04281344, cg24570211, and cg26215982) were confirmed in clinical research, which showed that the sensitivity and specificity of these CpGs as biomarkers for breast cancer were 69.4-83.7% and 85.7-88.6%, respectively. Conclusions New biomarkers were identified and confirmed for breast cancer by comparing the methylation of tumour tissues, leukocytes, and non-plasma DNA.

The chemoresistance of colon cancer cells limits the efficacy of chemotherapy. miR-409-3p has been shown to be downregulated in various types of cancer. In the present study, we examined the role of miR-409-3p in colon cancer as well as the effects of miR‑409-3p on the sensitivity of colon cancer cells to oxaliplatin. The expression of miR-409 was significantly downregulated in the human colon cancer cell lines compared with the normal colon epithelial cells. Importantly, the miR-409-3p expression levels were lower in human colon cancer patient samples than in normal colon tissues. Moreover, we observed a negative correlation between the miR‑409-3p levels and resistance to oxaliplatin: the oxaliplatin-resistant colon cancer cells exhibited significantly downregulated miR‑409-3p levels, but higher autophagic activity than the oxaliplatin-sensitive cells. Using bioinformatics analysis, we predicted that miR‑409-3p miRNA binds to the key autophagy gene encoding Beclin-1. Our findings indicated that the overexpression of miR‑409-3p inhibited Beclin-1 expression and autophagic activity by binding to the 3'-untranslated region of Beclin-1 mRNA. In addition, the overexpression of miR‑409-3p enhanced the chemosensitivity of the oxaliplatin-sensitive and oxaliplatin-resistant colon cancer cells. The restoration of Beclin-1 abrogated these effects of miR‑409-3p. In a xenograft model using nude mice, we examined the effects of miR‑409-3p on tumor growth during chemotherapy. miR‑409-3p overexpression sensitized the tumor to chemotherapy, while inhibiting chemotherapy-induced autophagy in a manner dependent on Beclin-1. The findings of our study suggest that miR-409-3p is capable of enhancing the chemosensitivity of colon cancer cells by inhibiting Beclin-1-mediated autophagy.

To assess the safety and feasibility of early oral hydration (EOH) in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.Prospective, randomized, controlled trial.Patients were randomly assigned to the EOH group or the conventional oral hydration (COH) group. Outcomes were the incidence of nausea and vomiting, thirst scale, incidence of oropharyngeal discomfort, and patient satisfaction.Compared with the COH group, the EOH group had lower incidence of nausea before and after the first drink in the ward (P.05); lower incidence of vomiting before and after the first drink in the ward (P.05); lower thirst scale when patients were transferred out of the PACU (P.05) and at 6 hours postoperatively (P.05); and greater patient satisfaction on postoperative day 1 (P.05).Early oral hydration in the PACU following laparoscopic cholecystectomy was safe and well-tolerated.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to be involved in the development and progression of advanced gastric cancer (AGC). However, the roles of lncRNAs in advanced gastric cancer during the process of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are not well understood. A high-throughput microarray analysis was performed to compare the expression profiles of lncRNAs and messenger RNAs (mRNAs) in AGC serum samples during the process of CRS + HIPEC. Several potentially AGC-associated lncRNAs were verified by real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. Using abundant and varied probes, we were able to assess 33,045 lncRNAs and 30,215 mRNAs in our microarray. We found that 566 lncRNAs were differentially expressed (2-fold change) in AGC serum samples, indicating the significantly up- or downregulated lncRNAs play important roles in AGC during the process of CRS + HIPEC. Quantitative PCR results further verified that eight lncRNAs were aberrantly expressed in AGC serum samples after CRS + HIEC compared with matched serum sample before CRS + HIPEC. Among them, BC031243 and RP11-356I2.2 were the most aberrantly expressed lncRNAs, as estimated by quantitative PCR in six pairs of AGC serum samples. Our study demonstrated the expression patterns of lncRNAs in AGC serums before and after CRS + HIPEC by microarray. These results revealed that lncRNAs were differentially expressed during the process of CRS + HIPEC, suggesting that they might play key roles in tumor development.

A mathematical model for skin burn injury induced by radiation heating, where the skin was considered to be a 3-D triple-layered structure with embedded three-level dendritic countercurrent vascular network, has been developed. Since there are up to seven levels of arteries and veins, the motivation of this study is to extend the model to a more complex case that considers a seven-level dendritic countercurrent vascular network, where the dimensions and blood flow of the blood vessels are determined based on the constructal theory of multi-scale tree-shaped heat exchangers. The method is illustrated by an example.

Complete nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences were obtained for 18 Chondrus populations collected at 15 sites from eight countries worldwide. Pairwise comparisons with the multiple alignment revealed that intraspecific divergences of ITS sequences ranged from 0.3 to 1.8% in C. crispus Stackhouse (except for the entity SVLH from France) and from 0.0 to 0.6% in C. ocellatus Holmes, whereas interspecific divergences in Chondrus varied from 1.4 to 5.0%. Three phylogenetic methods (neighbour joining, maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood) confirmed three main lineages: the North Atlantic lineage containing entities of C. crispus from Canada, France, Germany, England, Portugal, Ireland and Wales; a second lineage comprising three species: C. sp. 1, C. armatus (Harvey) Yamada et Mikami, and C. pinnulatus (Harvey) Okamura from the Northern Pacific; and a third lineage containing just one species: C. ocellatus from the Northern Pacific. Chondrus yendoi Yamada et Mikami separated from other Chondrus species singly. nrDNA ITS data indicate that a previous assignment of C. sp. 2 to Mazzaella japonica (Mikami) Hommersand may be incorrect, and additional evidence is needed to resolve the generic placement of this entity. It is inferred from the nrDNA ITS data that three Chondrus species are presently known in China with two, C. ocellatus and C. nipponicus, in Qingdao and two, C. armatus and C. nipponicus, in Dalian. We hypothesize that the ancestor of North Atlantic C. crispus had a Pacific origin, and that the present distribution of C. crispus in the Atlantic Ocean correlates with a trans-Arctic dispersal and vicariance events associated with Pleistocene glaciation maxima.

Eighteen isolates of the red algae Chondrus crispus were collected from Northern Atlantic sites, together with C. ocellatus, C. yendoi and C. pinnulatus from the North Pacific. The nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) was sequenced and compared, spanning both the ITS regions and the 5.8S rRNA gene. Percentage of nucleotide variation for C. crispus ranged from 0.3% to 4.0%. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using maximum parsimony (MP), neighbor-joining (NJ) and minimum evolution methods. They showed that two main clades existed within the C. crispus samples examined and that suggested C. crispus had a single Atlantic origin. The clustering however did not follow the geographic origin. We hypothesized that the current distribution of C. crispus populations might be a result of three main factors: temperature boundaries, paleoclimate and paleoceanography. ITS data exhibited abundant molecular information not only for phylogeographical investigation but also for systematics studies.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Temnopleurus hardwickii was sequenced using long-PCR and primer walking methods. The complete mitochondrial genome is a 15,696 bp circular molecule which contains 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs, 13 protein-coding genes as well as a non-coding control region as in other urchin. The genome was composed of 32.9% A, 29.3% T, 21.4% C and 16.4% G, showing a slight AT bias (62.3%). The control region is 156 bp. Twelve of the 13 mitochondrial protein-coding genes use ATG as their start codon while the ATP8 gene starts with GTG. All the 13 mitochondrial protein-coding genes use TAG or TAA as their complete stop codon.

A simple, inexpensive and efficient method was developed for rapid isolation of total genomic DNA from 15 red algal species. It resulted in 0.1 mug high quality DNA from 1 mg fresh algal material, with an A(260)/A(280) ratio of 1.68 - 1.90. Using this rapidly isolated DNA, the 18S ribosomal RNA genes ( rDNA) and the nuclear ribosomal DNA of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions were amplified. The tested DNA was suitable for restriction endonuclease digestion, genetic marker analysis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification, and may be valid for other genetic manipulation.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Diadema setosum was sequenced by using long-PCR and primer walking methods. The complete mitochondrial genome is a 15,708 bp circular molecule, which contains 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs, and 13 protein-coding genes as well as a non-coding control region as in other urchin. The genome was composed of 27.5% A, 30.7% T, 24.3% C, and 17.5% G. The control region is 133 bp. Twelve of the 13 mitochondrial protein-coding genes use ATG as their start codon while the ATP8 gene starts with GTG. Six of the 13 mitochondrial protein-coding genes use TAA as their complete stop codon while seven of them use TAG as their complete stop codon.

The paper reports on the basic characteristics of the catch composition, distribution and seasonal variation of setnet fisheries in the Yellow and Bohai Seas. There were 126 species in the samples, including 102 fish species, 17 crustaceans, 5 Cephalopoda, and 2 Medusa species. Both the number of species and biomass of the setnet catches show geographical variations. The fishery resources in the region exhibited seasonal variations, which are reflected in the yields. The highest biomass is in spring (49.6%); autumn comes next at 34.25%, with 11.25% in summer, and only 4.9% in winter.

An experimental ecological study of sea urchin (Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus) sampled from coastal waters of Qingdao was focused on the fundamental ecological factors such as temperature, salinity, light intensity and substratum. The results showed that the suitable ecological range of temperature was from 8 degrees C to 22 degrees C, and the selectivity to temperature was changed with the previous living temperatures. Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus was a kind of stenohaline creature. Its optimum ecological range of salinity was from 30 to 35. The results also showed that Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus liked to select weak light environment (50 lux), especially under non-food condition. Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus had the positive substratum-selectivity to coarse sand and the negative substratum-selectivity to silver sand.
