Abstract Catalytic upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into high-value oxygenated products is a fascinating process, yet it remains challenging. Here, we present a one-step tandem strategy to realize the thermal catalytic oxidation upcycling of PET to terephthalic acid (TPA) and high-value glycolic acid (GA) instead of ethylene glycol (EG). By using the Au/NiO with rich oxygen vacancies as catalyst, we successfully accelerate the hydrolysis of PET, accompanied by obtaining 99% TPA yield and 87.6% GA yield. The results reveal that the oxygen vacancies in NiO (NiO-Ov) support tend to adsorb hydrolysis product TPA, preferentially ensuring the strong adsorption of EG at the Au-NiO interface. Moreover, during the EG oxidation process, the Au-NiO interface, composed of two types of structures, quasi “AuNi alloy” and NiO-Ov, simultaneously promote the C-H bond activation, where Ni in “AuNi alloy” exhibits an oxytropism effect to anchor the C = O bond of the intermediate, while the residual O in NiO-Ov pillages the H in the C-H bond. Such Au/NiO catalyst is further extended to promote the thermal catalytic oxidation upcycling of other polyethylene glycol esters to GA with excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract Purpose To develop a comprehensive and validated personalized scoring system based on anatomical characteristics to predict the probability of failure to return to sport after medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction in patients with patellar dislocation. Methods 312 patients with medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction in our hospital from 2013 to 2023 were included. Demographic and anatomical characteristics were collected retrospectively. A backward stepwise approach was used to identify independent predictors, and a nomogram was constructed to predict the probability of recurrence. The predictive performance was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic curves, calibration diagram and decision curve analysis. Results Multivariate analysis showed that increased tibial tubercle–trochlear groove (TT-TG) distance, trochlear dysplasia, increased femoral anteversion angle, and patellar alta were independent risk factors for failure of return to sport after medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction. Validation of this column graph in the training cohort and validation cohort showed strong predictive power, with areas under the curve of 0.850 and 0.844, respectively. The nomogram has good calibration and good clinical practicability. Conclusion The study developed a personalized predictive nomogram with 4 predictors (increased TT-TG distance, trochlear dysplasia, increased femoral anteversion angle, and patellar alta) that allowed surgeons to stratify the risk of failure to return to sport after medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction and recommend skeletal surgery for patients with these factors. Abstract Background Age plays an important role in the association between adenotonsillar hypertrophy and craniofacial morphology. This study aimed to analyse the association of adenoid and tonsillar hypertrophy with craniofacial features in different age groups. Methods Lateral cephalograms were obtained from 942 patients aged 6–15 years (433 boys, 509 girls). They were divided into three age groups: 6–9 years (n = 189), 9–12 years (n = 383), and 12–15 years (n = 370). According to the different sites of pharyngeal obstruction, they were classified as control group (CG), adenoid hypertrophy group (AG), tonsillar hypertrophy group (TG) and adenotonsillar hypertrophy group (ATG). Cephalometric measurements were performed on each enrolled participant. Comparisons between groups and correlations between these cephalometric variables and obstruction sites were evaluated. Results At 6–9 years of age, ATG and TG correlated with increased mandibular height (B = 2.2, p = 0.029; B = 2.6, p = 0.042, respectively). At the age of 9–12 years, AG showed a steep growth direction (B = 1.5, p = 0.002), TG showed a higher probability of Class III skeletal pattern (smaller SNB, ANB and SGn/FH, larger Go-Me) and ATG manifested a higher proportion of Class III skeletal pattern. At 12–15 years of age, there was no significant association between cephalometric measurements and pharyngeal lymphoid tissue enlargement. Conclusions Children with isolated adenoid hypertrophy have a vertical growth direction at 9–12 years of age. Isolated adenoid hypertrophy correlated with longer mandibular body, more anterior mandible and horizontal skeletal Class III pattern at 6–12 years. Combination of obstructive adenoids and tonsils manifested similarly to children with isolated tonsil hypertrophy.

Abstract Background and aims Preoperative prediction of axillary lymph node (ALN) burden in patients with early-stage breast cancer is pivotal for individualised treatment. This study aimed to develop a MRI radiomics model for evaluating the ALN burden in early-stage breast cancer and to provide biological interpretability to predictions by integrating radiogenomic data. Methods This study retrospectively analyzed 1211 patients with early-stage breast cancer from four centers, supplemented by data from The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) and Duke University (DUKE). MRI radiomic features were extracted from dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI images and an ALN burden-related radscore was constructed by the backpropagation neural network algorithm. Clinical and combined models were developed, integrating ALN-related clinical variables and radscore. The Kaplan–Meier curve and log-rank test were used to assess the prognostic differences between the predicted high- and low-ALN burden groups in both Center I and DUKE cohorts. Gene set enrichment and immune infiltration analyses based on transcriptomic TCIA and TCIA Breast Cancer dataset were used to investigate the biological significance of the ALN-related radscore. Background Direct evidence for the relationship between a large prostate (≥80 ml) and androgen receptor/PSA signal remains lacking in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Our aim is to identify whether the cause of a large prostate is related to progesterone receptor (PGR) androgen receptor (AR), oestrogen receptor α, β (ERα,β) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA).Materials and methods Surgical specimens of BPH in plasmakinetic resection of the prostate (PKRP) with three groups of different prostate-sizes with mean volumes of 25.97 ml, 63.80 ml, and 122.37 ml were collected for immunohistochemical analysis of the tissue microarray with PGR, AR, PSA and ERs. Rats were castrated and treated with testosterone replacement to explore androgen and PGR, AR and ERs expression levels in the prostate. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (Rt-PCR) for mRNA detection of above genes was conducted.Results Immunoblotting, Rt-PCR and immunohistochemistry assays showed that PGR, PSA, AR, ERα expression levels were positively correlated with prostate size and that ERβ expression levels were negatively correlated with prostate volume. Animal experiments have shown that prostate volume is decreased in castrated rats with decreased PGR, AR, ERα and increased ERβ expression levels.Conclusion PGR, AR, ERs signals can be regarded as important factors for large-sized prostates in BPH patients (≥100 ml).

Abstract Background Rapid sequence intubation (RSI) have been shown to be effective in preventing reflux aspiration in patients with a full stomach during anaesthesia induction and endotracheal intubation. However, there is currently no standardized operation protocol or anaesthesia induction drug standard for RSI. Furthermore, there is a lack of evidence regarding the use of RSI in patients older than 65. In this study, we aimed to investigate the cardiovascular effects of different doses of alfentanil combined with propofol and etomidate during RSI in elderly patients aged 65–80 years. Methods A total of 96 patients aged 65–80 years who underwent general anaesthesia with tracheal intubation were selected for this study. The patients were randomly assigned to one of four groups using a random number table. Group A patients received an induction dose of 10 µg/kg alfentanil, group B patients received 15 µg/kg alfentanil, group C patients received 20 µg/kg alfentanil, and group D patients received 25 µg/kg alfentanil. Heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), cardiac index (CI), and ejection fraction (EF) were measured at three time points: 5 min before anaesthesia induction (T0), 1 min after endotracheal intubation (T1), and 5 min after endotracheal intubation (T2). Concurrently, 4 ml of arterial blood was collected from patients at three time points, and the concentrations of norepinephrine (NE) and cortisol (Cor) in plasma were detected. Occurrences of hypertension, hypotension, bradycardia and tachycardia during anesthesia induction to 5 min after tracheal intubation were noted. Results Compared with T0, the HR, MAP, NE and Cor concentrations in group A and group B were increased at the T1 and T2 time points, CI and EF values were decreased (P 0.05). Abstract Feature selection is a hot problem in machine learning. Swarm intelligence algorithms play an essential role in feature selection due to their excellent optimisation ability. The Chimp Optimisation Algorithm (CHoA) is a new type of swarm intelligence algorithm. It has quickly won widespread attention in the academic community due to its fast convergence speed and easy implementation. However, CHoA has specific challenges in balancing local and global search, limiting its optimisation accuracy and leading to premature convergence, thus affecting the algorithm’s performance on feature selection tasks. This study proposes Social coevolution and Sine chaotic opposition learning Chimp Optimization Algorithm (SOSCHoA). SOSCHoA enhances inter-population interaction through social coevolution, improving local search. Additionally, it introduces sine chaotic opposition learning to increase population diversity and prevent local optima. Extensive experiments on 12 high-dimensional classification datasets demonstrate that SOSCHoA outperforms existing algorithms in classification accuracy, convergence, and stability. Although SOSCHoA shows advantages in handling high-dimensional datasets, there is room for future research and optimization, particularly concerning feature dimensionality reduction.

Abstract The electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical for fuel cell application, and modifying surface structures of electrocatalysts has proven effective in improving their catalytic performances. In this study, we investigated surface‐engineered Pt−Ni nano‐octahedra subjected to annealing in various atmospheres. All octahedral nanocrystals retained their Pt−Ni {111} facets at an elevated temperature following the annealing treatments. Air annealing led to the formation of nickel‐rich shells on the Pt−Ni surface. In contrast, hydrogen (H₂) as a reducing gas facilitated the reduction of surface Ni species, incorporating them into the Pt−Ni bulk alloy, which resulted in superior mass activity and specific activity for ORR‐approximately 2.4 and 2.3 times as high as those from the unmodified counterpart, respectively. After 20,000 potential cycles, the H₂/Ar‐annealed Pt−Ni nano‐octahedra maintained a mass activity of 3.92 A/ mgPt , surpassing the initial mass activity of the unannealed counterparts (2.95 A/ mgPt ). These findings demonstrate a viable approach for tailoring catalyst surfaces to enhance performance in various energy storage and conversion applications.

Background Adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting systems are critical for monitoring and managing drug safety. However, various factors influence the willingness to use these systems. This study aimed to investigate the willingness to use ADR reporting systems through an integrated model of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Task-Technology Fit (TTF) theory, conducting a multicentre qualitative study from the user’s perspective.Methods This study used qualitative research methods, including in-depth interviews with clinicians, nurses, pharmacists and administrators who reported ADRs through the National Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring System (NADRMS) and the China Hospital Pharmacovigilance System (CHPS). The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using QDA Miner software for data management and thematic analysis.Results Eighteen healthcare workers from five healthcare organisations participated in the study. They found the ease of use and usefulness of the current NADRMS and CHPS to be acceptable. The essential technical requirements identified included accuracy, standardisation, timeliness and confidentiality. However, challenges such as inaccurate information capture, unstable interfacing with medical record systems, low reporting efficiency and lack of data sharing were highlighted. Overall, front-line healthcare workers exhibited a generally negative attitude towards using NADRMS and CHPS, driven more by necessity than preference. Factors influencing their willingness to use these systems included ease of use, practicality, risk perception and social impact, with varying attitudes and requirements observed between user groups.Conclusion This study provides practical recommendations that can be readily implemented to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of ADR reporting systems. While front-line users in China acknowledged the systems’ ease of use and usefulness, they also noted significant gaps in technological adaptation. They expressed the need for improvements in data openness and sharing, accessibility and system intelligence.

Microbial communities have been demonstrated to be essential for healthy and productive soil ecosystems. However, an understanding of the relationship between soil microbial community and soil productivity levels is remarkably limited. In this study, bulk soil (BS), rhizosphere soil (RS), and root (R) samples from the historical high-productive (H) and low-productive (L) soil types of wheat in Hebei province of China were collected and analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. The study highlighted the richness, diversity, and structure of bacterial communities, along with the correlation networks among different bacterial genera. Significant differences in the bacterial community structure between samples of different soil types were observed. Compared with the low-productive soil type, the bacterial communities of samples from the high-productive soil type possessed high species richness, low species diversity, complex and stable networks, and a higher relative abundance of beneficial microbes, such as Pseudoxanthomonas, unclassified Vicinamibacteraceae, Lysobacter, Massilia, Pseudomonas, and Bacillus. Further analysis indicated that the differences were mainly driven by soil organic matter (SOM), available nitrogen (AN), and electrical conductivity (EC). Overall, the soil bacterial community is an important factor affecting soil health and crop production, which provides a theoretical basis for the targeted regulation of microbes in low-productivity soil types.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To examine whether isoflurane preconditioning (IsoP) has a protective effect against renal ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/RI) in diabetic conditions and to further clarify the underlying mechanisms. Methods: Control and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were randomly assigned to five groups, as follows: normal sham, normal I/R, diabetic sham, diabetic I/R, and diabetic I/R + isoflurane. Renal I/RI was induced by clamping renal pedicle for 45 min followed by reperfusion for 24 h. IsoP was achieved by exposing the rats to 2% isoflurane for 30 min before vascular occlusion. Kidneys and blood were collected after reperfusion for further analysis. Renal histology, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, and renal cell apoptosis were assessed. Furthermore, the expression of brahma related gene 1 (Brg1), nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) were determined. Results: Compared with control, diabetic rats undergoing I/R presented more severe renal injury, oxidative stress, inflammatory reaction, and apoptosis with the impairment of Brg1/Nrf2/HO-1 signaling. All these alterations were significantly attenuated by pretreatment with isoflurane. Conclusions: These findings suggest that isoflurane could alleviate renal I/RI in diabetes, possibly through improving Brg1/Nrf2/HO-1 signaling.

Abstract Feature selection is a critical component of machine learning and data mining to remove redundant and irrelevant features from a dataset. The Chimp Optimization Algorithm (CHoA) is widely applicable to various optimization problems due to its low number of parameters and fast convergence rate. However, CHoA has a weak exploration capability and tends to fall into local optimal solutions in solving the feature selection process, leading to ineffective removal of irrelevant and redundant features. To solve this problem, this paper proposes the Enhanced Chimp Hierarchy Optimization Algorithm for adaptive lens imaging (ALI-CHoASH) for searching the optimal classification problems for the optimal subset of features. Specifically, to enhance the exploration and exploitation capability of CHoA, we designed a chimp social hierarchy. We employed a novel social class factor to label the class situation of each chimp, enabling effective modelling and optimization of the relationships among chimp individuals. Then, to parse chimps’ social and collaborative behaviours with different social classes, we introduce other attacking prey and autonomous search strategies to help chimp individuals approach the optimal solution faster. In addition, considering the poor diversity of chimp groups in the late iteration, we propose an adaptive lens imaging back-learning strategy to avoid the algorithm falling into a local optimum. Finally, we validate the improvement of ALI-CHoASH in exploration and exploitation capabilities using several high-dimensional datasets. We also compare ALI-CHoASH with eight state-of-the-art methods in classification accuracy, feature subset size, and computation time to demonstrate its superiority.

BackgroundToxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a widespread zoonotic parasite transmitted through contaminated food or water. It poses a significant public health threat, especially to pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals. 25-Hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] plays a critical role in regulating both innate and adaptive immune responses, particularly in its anti-infective capacity. However, the relationship between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and T. gondii infection remains uncertain.MethodsWe analyzed the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2009–2014 to explore the association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and T. gondii infection. Extensive demographic, comorbidity, and dietary data were collected. The status of T. gondii infection was determined using serum anti-IgG antibodies. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS). In addition, weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline analyses were performed.ResultsOur analysis included 10,157 participants (mean [SE] age, 45.38 [0.39] years; 49.73% female) who met the inclusion criteria. Serum 25(OH)D levels were categorized into quintiles, with the second quintile serving as the reference group. The final model, adjusted for age, sex, race, education level, poverty income ratio, body mass index, smoking status, hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, depression, physical activity, alcohol intake, seasonal testing, and dietary vitamin D, revealed the following adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for the quintiles: 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.60–0.93) for the first, 0.87 (95% CI: 0.69–1.10) for the third, 0.75 (95% CI: 0.58–0.95) for the fourth, and 0.66 (95% CI: 0.49–0.91) for the fifth. Additionally, a restricted cubic spline analysis revealed an inverted U-shaped relationship between serum 25(OH)D and T. gondii infection, with an inflection point at approximately 51.29 nmol/L. Odds ratios to the left and right of the inflection point were 1.17 (95% CI: 1.03–1.32) and 0.94 (95% CI, 0.90–0.98) per 10 nmol/L, respectively.ConclusionOur study uncovers an inverted U-shaped relationship between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and T. gondii infection, with an inflection point around 51.29 nmol/L.

Devising exceptional S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts utilized in annihilating pharmaceuticals and chromium contamination is significant for addressing the problem of global water pollution. In this work, a chemically bonded Mn0.5Cd0.5S/BiOBr S-scheme heterostructure with oxygen vacancies is ingeniously developed through a facile in-situ solvothermal synthesis. The designed Mn0.5Cd0.5S/BiOBr heterojunction exhibits eminently reinforced photo-activity for destruction of tetracycline hydrochloride and Cr(VI) as compared with its individual components. This substantial photo-redox performance amelioration is benefitted from the creation of an intense internal electric field (IEF) via supplying powerful driving force and migration highway by interfacial chemical bond to foster the S-scheme electron/hole disintegration. More intriguingly, the IEF at the hetero-interface drives the fast consumption of the photo-induced holes in Mn0.5Cd0.5S by the photoelectrons from BiOBr, profoundly boosting the enrichment of active photo-carriers and sparing the photo-corrosion of Mn0.5Cd0.5S. Furthermore, Mn0.5Cd0.5S/BiOBr with exceptional anti-interference property can work efficiently in real water matrices. Multiple uses of the recycled Mn0·5Cd0·5S/BiOBr evidence its prominent robustness and stability. This achievement indicates the vast potential of chemically bonded S-scheme photosystems with structural defects in the design of photo-responsive materials for effective wastewater treatment.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by an absolute deficiency of insulin due to pancreatic failure. Diabetes ketoacidosis (DKA) has emerged as one of the most common complications of T1DM. Although exceedingly rare, the onset of T1DM with DKA may result in lipemia secondary to severe hypertriglyceridemia (HTG), accounting for several cases in the pediatric population. Along this line, plasma exchange treatment in children with DKA and severe hyperlipidemia has only been reported in some cases. In this case report, the diagnosis of an 11-year-old girl with diabetes ketoacidosis accompanied by severe HTG, along with subsequent plasma exchange treatment, is presented. Initially, the patient received initial management with crystalloid fluid bolus and intravenous insulin therapy. Despite rapid correction of acidosis, persistent HTG subsequently prompted the plasma exchange treatment. A total of three sessions were administered over 2 days, leading to a significant reduction in the triglyceride levels and corneal opacity resolution, indicating a successful therapeutic intervention.

Objective: The aim was to investigate the ability of superb microvascular imaging (SMI) to improve the differential diagnosis of mummified thyroid nodules (MTNs) and papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs) using the 2017 American College of Radiology Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (ACR-TIRADS). Materials and methods: We enrolled 110 cases of MTNs and 110 cases of PTCs confirmed by fine needle aspiration (FNA) or surgery. Conventional ultrasound (US) and the quantity of microvessels detected by SMI were analyzed for all nodules. Thyroid nodules were initially categorized by ACR-TIRADS based on US imaging features and then reclassified based on ACR-TIRADS combined with SMI blood-flow grade (SMI-TIRADS). We compared the diagnostic performances of ACR-TIRADS and SMI-TIRADS by receiver operating characteristic curve, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV). Results: US-detected margin, shape, and echogenic foci differed between MTNs and PTCs (P < 0.05). The SMI blood-flow grade was significantly greater in PTCs compared with MTNs (Χ2 = 158.78, P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in ACR-TIRADS indicators between MTNs and PTCs (Χ2 = 1.585, P = 0.453); however, reclassification by SMI-TIRADS showed significant differences between the groups (Χ2 = 129.521, P < 0.001). The area under the curve was significantly lower for ACR-TIRADS compared with SMI-TIRADS (0.517 vs 0.887, P < 0.05). SMI-TIRADS had significantly higher diagnostic value for distinguishing MTNs and PTCs than ACR-TIRADS (sensitivity: 91.82% vs 74.55%, P < 0.05; specificity: 84.55% vs 21.82%, P < 0.05; accuracy: 88.18% vs 48.18%, P < 0.05; PPV: 85.59% vs 48.81%, P < 0.05; and NPV: 91.18% vs 46.15%, P < 0.05). Conclusion: The detection of microvascular flow and large vessels in thyroid nodules by SMI resulted in high diagnostic specificity and sensitivity. ACR-TIRADS combined with SMI could effectively distinguish between MTNs and PTCs, to avoid unnecessary FNA or surgical excision.

The rapid growth of data quantity directly leads to the increasing feature dimension, which challenges machine learning and data mining. Wrapper-based intelligent swarm algorithms are effective solution techniques. The Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm is a novel intelligent population algorithm. Simple principles and few parameters characterize it. However, the basic GWO has disadvantages, such as difficulty coordinating exploration and exploitation capabilities and premature convergence. As a result, GWO fails to identify many irrelevant and redundant features. To improve the performance of the basic GWO algorithm, this paper proposes a velocity-guided grey wolf optimization algorithm with adaptive weights and Laplace operators (VGWO-AWLO). Firstly, by introducing a uniformly distributed dynamic adaptive weighting mechanism, the control parameters $a$ are guided to undergo nonlinear dynamic changes to achieve a good transition from the exploratory phase to the development phase. Second, a velocity-based position update formula is designed with an individual memory function to enhance the local search capability of individual grey wolves and drive them to converge to the optimal solution. Thirdly, a Laplace cross-operator strategy is applied to increase the population diversity and help the grey wolf population escape from the local optimal solution. Finally, the VGWO-AWLO algorithm is evaluated for its comprehensive performance in terms of classification accuracy, dimensionality approximation, convergence, and stability in 18 classified datasets. The experimental results show that the classification accuracy and convergence speed of VGWO-AWLO are better than the basic GWO, GWO variants, and other state-of-the-art meta-heuristic algorithms.

Abstract Facial expression is closely related to the emotions of drivers, thus facilitating safe driving detection in advanced driving assistance system (ADAS). Recently, deep learning techniques have become prevalent for facial expression recognition. However, for driving scenarios, the facial expression recognition is mainly challenged by the problems of small sample size as well as effective feature representation. To address the above issues, this paper puts forward a transfer learning‐based method for driver facial expression recognition by fully exploiting the other sources of facial expression data that may obey different distributions. Specifically, an enhanced feature attention module is firstly devised such that affluent features with multi‐scales can be extracted and refined based on the spatial and channel attention mechanisms. Then, a joint correlation alignment loss is presented ensuring that the samples in the source and target domains are transformed into the shared common subspace to reduce difference of both the marginal and conditional distributions. Multiple transfer learning tasks on real‐world data are carried out to evaluate the proposed method. The experimental results show that our model achieves better recognition accuracy for driver facial expression compared with several traditional and deep learning‐based transfer learning algorithms.

Abstract Background Transbronchial lung forceps biopsy (TBFB) is recommended before a surgical lung biopsy (SLB) when a definitive diagnosis of lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is required for patients without any additional confirmatory features. Transbronchial lung cryobiopsy (TBCB) has been suggested as replacement test in patients considered eligible to undergo SLB for the diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases. The efficacy and safety of TBCB were compared with that of TBFB and SLB in the diagnosis of LAM. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 207 consecutive patients suspected with LAM in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from 2005 to 2020. Results The difference in diagnostic rate of patients suspected with LAM between TBCB (20/30, 66.7%) and TBFB (70/106, 66.0%) groups was not significant (p = 0.949). One patient performed TBCB with negative pathological results could be diagnosed exclusively after SLB. LAM diagnosis was confirmed by surgical pathological findings in 3 TBFB-negative patients. More patients with minimal cystic profusion were diagnosed with LAM by TBCB (5/19, 26.3%) and SLB (11/39, 28.2%) than by TBFB (3/61, 4.9%) (TBCB vs TBFB: p = 0.04, SLB vs TBFB, p 0.05). One pneumothorax, 8 mild bleeding and 1 moderate bleeding were observed in TBCB. One pneumothorax, 15 mild bleeding and 1 moderate bleeding occurred after TBFB. Conclusion Compared to TBFB, TBCB is safe and effective in diagnosing LAM at a higher diagnostic rate in patients with minimal cystic profusion.

Abstract Purpose To explore the correlation between the initial recurrence site and survival after recurrence (PRS) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods We collected 588 stages I–III NSCLC patients with recurrence after radical resection in Yunnan Cancer Hospital from January 2013 to December 2018. We used Kaplan–Meier survival curves to compare PRS in patients with different site recurrences. The univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze the impact of the initial recurrence site on PRS. Results The recurrence site included the lung (n = 109), brain (n = 113), bone (n = 79), abdomen (n = 28), pleura (n = 24), lymph node (n = 81), and multisite (n = 154). In the total population, patients with multisite recurrence had substantially worse PRS (24.8 months, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 17.46–32.20) than that of patients without multiple sites recurrence (42.2 months, 95% CI 32.24–52.10) (P = 0.026). However, patients with lung recurrence had better RFS (63.1 months, 95% CI 51.13–74.00) than those who did not (31.0 months, 95% CI 25.10–36.96) (P

Abstract Object Varus-valgus lower alignment is a risk factor for patellofemoral osteoarthritis, but malalignment alone affect not only the tibiofemoral joint but also the patellofemoral joint. The aim of the present study was to analyse the contact area of patellofemoral joint in varus alignment and valgus alignment of healthy subjects using magnetic resonance imaging. Methods Twenty-six healthy subjects with valgus lower limb alignment (Group I, n = 26) and twenty-six volunteers with varus lower limb alignment (Group II, n = 26) was performed. An MRI scan was used to capture and measure the patellofemoral joint articular cartilage contact area at different degrees of knee flexion (20°, 40°,60°) in passive movement. All subjects were categorized on the basis of the global limb alignment and mechanical alignment of the femur and tibia. Varus alignment is hip–knee–ankle angle ≥ 3°; and valgus alignment is hip–knee–ankle angle ≥ − 3°. To obtain medial facet contact area and lateral facet contact area for each slice, the length of each respective line of contact was multiplied by the 5 mm slice thickness. Results The overall joint contact area increased from 168.0 ± 20.5 mm2 at 20° knee flexion to 334.4 ± 30.5 mm2 at 60° knee flexion in group (I) The overall joint contact area increased from 178.0 ± 18.9 mm2 at 20° knee flexion to 328.9 ± 27.2 mm2 at 60° knee flexion in group (II) There was a significant difference in lateral facet contact area between group I and group II at 40° of knee flexion. There was significantly different in medial facet contact area between group I and group II at 20° and 40° of knee flexion. Conclusions Throughout the knee movement, the contact area on the lateral facet of the patellofemoral joint was greater in the valgus group. In the early phase of knee flexion, the contact area of the medial patellofemoral joint was larger in the varus group. Lower alignment is an important factor in patellofemoral joint degeneration.

Abstract Purpose To investigate the differences of patellofemoral joint pressure and contact area between the process of stair ascent and stair descent. Methods The finite element models of 9 volunteers without disorders of knee (9 males) to estimate patellar cartilage pressure during the stair ascent and the stair descent. Simulations took into account cartilage morphology from magnetic resonance imaging, joint posture from weight-bearing magnetic resonance imaging, and ligament model. The three-dimension models of the patella, femur and tibia were developed with the medical image processing software, Mimics 11.1. The ligament was established by truss element of the non-linear FE solver. The equivalent gravity direction (-z direction) load was applied to the whole end of femur (femoral head) according to the body weight of the volunteers, and the force of patella was observed. A paired-samples t-test or Wilcoxon rank sum test to make comparisons between stair ascent and stair descent. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 22.0 using a P value of 0.05 to indicate significance. Results During the stair descent (knee flexion at 30°), the contact pressure of the patella was 2.59 ± 0.06Mpa. The contact pressure of femoral trochlea cartilage was 2.57 ± 0.06Mpa. During the stair ascent (knee flexion at 60°), the contact pressure with patellar cartilage was 2.82 ± 0.08Mpa. The contact pressure of the femoral trochlea cartilage was 3.03 ± 0.11Mpa. The contact area between patellar cartilage and femoral trochlea cartilage was 249.27 ± 1.35mm2 during the stair descent, which was less than 434.32 ± 1.70mm2 during the stair ascent. The area of high pressure was located in the lateral area of patella during stair descent and the area of high pressure was scattered during stair ascent. Conclusion There are small change in the cartilage contact pressure between stair ascent and stair descent, indicating that the joint adjusts the contact pressure by increasing the contact area.

ObjectiveThe study aims to analyze the clinical characteristics of acute phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children aged 0–17 years with the Omicron variant, and summarize the persistent symptoms or new-onset clinical manifestations from 4 to 12 weeks after acute COVID. Explore the association between the vaccination status and SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody levels post infection among preschool-aged children. The comprehensive study systematically describes the clinical characteristics of children infected with SARS-CoV-2, providing a foundation for diagnosis and evaluating long-term COVID in pediatric populations.MethodsThe study enrolled children who were referred to the Children's Hospital, Capital Institute of Pediatrics, (Beijing, China) from January 10, 2023 to March 31, 2023. Participants were classified as infant and toddlers, preschool, school-age, and adolescent groups. Children or their legal guardians completed survey questionnaires to provide information of previous SARS-CoV-2 infection history, as well as clinical presentation during the acute phase and long-term symptoms from 4 to 12 weeks following infection. Furthermore, serum samples were collected from children with confirmed history of SARS-CoV-2 infection for serological testing of neutralizing antibodies.ResultsThe study recruited a total of 2,001 children aged 0–17 years who had previously tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 through nucleic acid or antigen testing. Fever emerged as the predominant clinical manifestation in 1,902 (95.1%) individuals with body temperature ranging from 37.3 to 40.0°C. Respiratory symptoms were identified as secondary clinical manifestations, with cough being the most common symptom in 777 (38.8%) children, followed by sore throat (22.1%), nasal congestion (17.8%), and runnning nose (17.2%). Fatigue (21.6%), headache (19.8%) and muscle-joint pain (13.5%) were frequently reported systemic symptoms in children. The proportion of children with symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection varied across age groups. 1,100 (55.0%) children experienced persistent symptoms from 4 to 12 weeks post the acute phase of infection. Trouble concentrating (22.1%), cough (22.1%), and fatigue (12.1%) were frequently reported across age groups in the extended period. A limited number of children exhibited cardiovascular symptoms with chest tightness, tachycardia, and chest pain reported by 3.5%, 2.5%, and 1.8% of children, respectively. Among 472 children aged 3–5 years, 208 children had received two doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine at least 6 months prior to infection, and no association was found between the incidence of long-term COVID and pre-infection vaccination statuses among the 3–5 years age groups (χ2 = 1.136, P = 0.286).ConclusionsIn children aged 0–17 years infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, fever was the primary clinical manifestation in the acute phase, followed by respiratory symptoms, systemic non-specific and digestive presentations. In particular, respiratory and digestive system symptoms were more frequent in children aged above 6 years. Regarding the long-term symptoms from 4 to 12 weeks post-infection, the most common presentations were concentrating difficulty, cough, and fatigue. The incidence of persistent symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 did not exhibit a significant correlation with vaccination status, which was attributed to the waning efficacy of the vaccine-induced humoral immune response after 6 months.

In polar environments, the presence of ice on the surfaces of ships and instruments can lead to equipment failure, an unstable center of gravity, and pose hazards to operators. To mitigate the damage caused by both icing and corrosion, this paper aims to investigate a corrosion-resistant photothermal deicing coating material. The coating matrix utilizes a low-viscosity epoxy resin system, while the additives include polypyrrole (PPy) with excellent photothermal conversion capability and corrosion resistance, along with graphene oxide (GO)-modified nano-silica. By carefully controlling the ratio, a composite coating is formulated with both anti-corrosion and photothermal deicing abilities under light conditions. The results demonstrate that under simulated sunlight irradiation, the surface temperature of the coating at different proportions can rise to over 80 ℃ within 10 min, with the highest temperature reaching 84.9 ℃. The optimal proportion of the coating remains unfrozen at -15 ℃, exhibiting an icing delay time of 710 s, and the frozen droplets melt within 5 s. Additionally, the coating exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, contributing to a more effective protection of metal surfaces. Therefore, this type of photothermal anticorrosive coating holds significant potential for widespread application in polar environments.

Present photocatalysts for the synchronous cleanup of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals have several drawbacks, including inadequate reactive sites, inefficient electron–hole disassociation, and insufficient oxidation and reduction power. In this research, we sought to address these issues by using a facile solvothermal-photoreduction route to develop an innovative plasmonic S-scheme heterojunction, Au/MIL-101(Fe)/BiOBr. The screened-out Au/MIL-101(Fe)/BiOBr (AMB-2) works in a durable and high-performance manner for both Cr(VI) and norfloxacin (NOR) eradication under visible light, manifesting up to 53.3 and 2 times greater Cr(VI) and NOR abatement rates, respectively, than BiOBr. Remarkably, AMB-2's ability to remove Cr(VI) in a Cr(VI)-NOR co-existence system is appreciably better than in a sole-Cr(VI) environment; the synergy among Cr(VI), NOR, and AMB-2 results in the better utilization of photo-induced carriers, yielding a desirable capacity for decontaminating Cr(VI) and NOR synchronously. The integration of MOF-based S-scheme heterojunctions and a plasmonic effect contributes to markedly reinforced photocatalytic ability by increasing the number of active sites, augmenting the visible-light absorbance, boosting the efficient disassociation and redistribution of powerful photo-carriers, and elevating the generation of reactive substances. We provide details of the photocatalytic mechanism, NOR decomposition process, and bio-toxicity of the intermediates. This synergistic strategy of modifying S-scheme heterojunctions with a noble metal opens new horizons for devising excellent MOF-based photosystems with a plasmonic effect for environment purification.

BackgroundWith the rapid aging of the population, the health needs of the older adult have increased significantly, resulting in the frequent occurrence of the “social hospitalization” problem, which has led to a rapid increase in hospitalization costs. This study investigates whether the “social hospitalization problem” arising from the long-term care needs can be solved through the implementation of long-term care insurance, thereby improving the overall health of the older adults and controlling the unreasonable increase in hospitalization costs.MethodsThe entropy theory was used as a conceptual model, based on data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2015 and 2018. The least-squares method was used to examine the relationship between long-term care needs and hospitalization costs, and the role that long-term care insurance implementation plays in its path of influence.ResultsThe results of this study indicated that long-term care needs would increase hospitalization cost, which remained stable after a series of tests, such as replacing the core explanatory variables and introducing fixed effects. Through the intermediary effect test and mediated adjustment effect test, we found the action path of long-term care needs on hospitalization costs. Long-term care needs increases hospitalization costs through more hospitalizations. Long-term care insurance reduces hospitalization costs. Its specific action path makes long-term care insurance reduce hospitalization costs through a negative adjustment of the number of hospitalizations.ConclusionTo achieve fair and sustainable development of long-term care insurance, the following points should be achieved: First, long-term care insurance should consider the prevention in advance and expand the scope of participation and coverage; Second, long-term care insurance should consider the control in the event and set moderate levels of treatment payments; Third, long-term care insurance should consider post-supervision and explore appropriate payment methods.

Dynamic functional connectivity, derived from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), has emerged as a crucial instrument for investigating and supporting the diagnosis of neurological disorders. However, prevalent features of dynamic functional connectivity predominantly capture either temporal or spatial properties, such as mean and global efficiency, neglecting the significant information embedded in the fusion of spatial and temporal attributes. In addition, dynamic functional connectivity suffers from the problem of temporal mismatch, i.e., the functional connectivity of different subjects at the same time point cannot be matched. To address these problems, this article introduces a novel feature extraction framework grounded in two-directional two-dimensional principal component analysis. This framework is designed to extract features that integrate both spatial and temporal properties of dynamic functional connectivity. Additionally, we propose to use Fourier transform to extract temporal-invariance properties contained in dynamic functional connectivity. Experimental findings underscore the superior performance of features extracted by this framework in classification experiments compared to features capturing individual properties.

Abstract Oxidation of renewable polyol/sugar into formic acid using molecular O2 over heterogeneous catalysts is still challenging due to the insufficient activation of both O2 and organic substrates on coordination-saturated metal oxides. In this study, we develop a defective MnO2 catalyst through a coordination number reduction strategy to enhance the aerobic oxidation of various polyols/sugars to formic acid. Compared to common MnO2, the tri-coordinated Mn in the defective MnO2 catalyst displays the electronic reconstruction of surface oxygen charge state and rich surface oxygen vacancies. These oxygen vacancies create more Mnδ+ Lewis acid site together with nearby oxygen as Lewis base sites. This combined structure behaves much like Frustrated Lewis pairs, serving to facilitate the activation of O2, as well as C–C and C–H bonds. As a result, the defective MnO2 catalyst shows high catalytic activity (turnover frequency: 113.5 h−1) and formic acid yield (>80%) comparable to noble metal catalysts for glycerol oxidation. The catalytic system is further extended to the oxidation of other polyols/sugars to formic acid with excellent catalytic performance.

In this work, we report the preparation of 1T'-MoS2/g-C3N4 nanocage (NC) heterostructure by loading 2D semi-metal noble-metal-free 1T'-MoS2 on the g-C3N4 nanocages (NCs). DFT calculation and experimental data have shown that the 1T'-MoS2/g-C3N4 NC heterostructure has a stronger light absorption capacity and larger specific surface area than pure g-C3N4 NCs and g-C3N4 nanosheets (NSs), and the presence of the co-catalysts 1T'-MoS2 can effectively inhibit the photoinduced carrier recombination. As a result, the 1T'-MoS2/g-C3N4 NC heterostructure with an optimum 1T'-MoS2 loading of 9 wt% displays a hydrogen evolution rate of 1949 μmol h−1 g−1, 162.4, 1.2, 1.5, 1.6 and 1.2 times than pure g-C3N4 NCs (12 μmol h−1 g−1), Pt/g-C3N4 NCs (1615 μmol h−1 g−1) and Pt/g-C3N4 nanosheets (NSs, 1297 μmol h−1 g−1), 1T'-MoS2/g-C3N4 nanosheets (1216 μmol h−1 g−1) and 2H-MoS2/g-C3N4 nanocages (1573 μmol h−1 g−1), respectively, and exhibits excellent cycle stability. Therefore, 1T'-MoS2/g-C3N4 NC heterostructure is a suitable photocatalyst for green H2 production.

Tumor microenvironment (TME) is a complex dynamic system with many tumor-interacting components including tumor-infiltrating leukocytes (TILs), cancer associated fibroblasts, blood vessels, and other stromal constituents. It intrinsically affects tumor development and pharmacology of oncology therapeutics, particularly immune-oncology (IO) treatments. Accurate measurement of TME is therefore of great importance for understanding the tumor immunity, identifying IO treatment mechanisms, developing predictive biomarkers, and ultimately, improving the treatment of cancer. Here, we introduce a mouse-IO NGS-based (NGSmIO) assay for accurately detecting and quantifying the mRNA expression of 1080 TME related genes in mouse tumor models. The NGSmIO panel was shown to be superior to the commonly used microarray approach by hosting 300 more relevant genes to better characterize various lineage of immune cells, exhibits improved mRNA and protein expression correlation to flow cytometry, shows stronger correlation with mRNA expression than RNAseq with 10x higher sequencing depth, and demonstrates higher sensitivity in measuring low-expressed genes. We describe two studies; firstly, detecting the pharmacodynamic change of interferon-γ expression levels upon anti-PD-1: anti-CD4 combination treatment in MC38 and Hepa 1-6 tumors; and secondly, benchmarking baseline TILs in 14 syngeneic tumors using transcript level expression of lineage specific genes, which demonstrate effective and robust applications of the NGSmIO panel.

Abstract Background Isodicentric Y chromosome (idic(Y)) is the most commonly reported aberration of the human Y chromosome, which is an important cause of abnormal sexual development. The breakpoints of isodicentric Y chromosome mostly occurred in Yq11.2 and Yp11.3, however, the breakpoints in Yq12 are relatively rare. Case presentation We described a 10-year-old boy presenting hypospadias, micropenis and short stature, as well as unilateral cryptorchidism without normal testicular seminiferous tubules structure by biopsy. Whole exome sequencing didn’t find any pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants related to phenotypes of this patient. Copy number variation sequencing showed the duplication of whole Y chromosome. Subsequently, karyotyping and FISH analyses demonstrated his genetic diagnosis was mosaic 45,X[8]/46,X,psu idic(Y)(q12)[32], with the breakpoint in Yq12. Conclusions Our case proved that it would be beneficial to integrate high-throughput sequencing with cytogenetic technique for precise diagnosis, treatment and genetic counselling.

IntroductionType 1 diabetes (T1D) is a serious autoimmune disease with high morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis and treatment remain unsatisfactory. While the potential for development of T1D biomarkers in circulating exosomes has attracted interest, progress has been limited. This study endeavors to explore the molecular dynamics of plasma exosome proteins in pediatric T1D patients and potential mechanisms correlated with T1D progressionMethodsLiquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with tandem mass tag (TMT)6 labeling was used to quantify exosomal protein expression profiles in 12 healthy controls and 24 T1D patients stratified by age (≤ 6 years old and > 6 years old) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels (> 7% or > 7%). Integrated bioinformatics analysis was employed to decipher the functions of differentially expressed proteins, and Western blotting was used for validation of selected proteins' expression levels. ResultsWe identified 1035 differentially expressed proteins (fold change > 1.3) between the T1D patients and healthy controls: 558 in those ≤ 6-year-old and 588 in those > 6-year-old. In those who reached an HbA1c level < 7% following 3 or more months of insulin therapy, the expression levels of most altered proteins in both T1D age groups returned to levels comparable to those in the healthy control group. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that differentially expressed exosome proteins are primarily related to immune function, hemostasis, cellular stress responses, and matrix organization. Western blotting confirmed the alterations in RAB40A, SEMA6D, COL6A5, and TTR proteins. DiscussionThis study delivers valuable insights into the fundamental molecular mechanisms contributing to T1D pathology. Moreover, it proposes potential therapeutic targets for improved T1D management.

Summary: The increased amount of tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) is associated with a favorable prognosis in patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). However, evaluating TLSs manually is an experience-dependent and time-consuming process, which limits its clinical application. In this multi-center study, we developed an automated computational workflow for quantifying the TLS density in the tumor region of routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained whole-slide images (WSIs). The association between the computerized TLS density and disease-free survival (DFS) was further explored in 802 patients with resectable LUAD of three cohorts. Additionally, a Cox proportional hazard regression model, incorporating clinicopathological variables and the TLS density, was established to assess its prognostic ability. The computerized TLS density was an independent prognostic biomarker in patients with resectable LUAD. The integration of the TLS density with clinicopathological variables could support individualized clinical decision-making by improving prognostic stratification.

ObjectiveAnalysis of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody and neutralizing antibody levels following SARS-CoV-2 infection in children aged 3-11 years, comparing those who had received the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine to those who were unvaccinated prior to infection, provides evidence for public health centers in formulating vaccination strategies and control policies.MethodsA study was conducted on children who visited the Children’s Hospital, Capital Institute of Pediatrics from January 10, 2023 to March 31, 2023 (Beijing, China). Participants or their guardians completed a survey questionnaire providing information about their SARS-CoV-2 infection history and vaccination status. Serum samples were collected for testing of SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G (IgG) and neutralizing antibodies (Nabs), which were performed using chemiluminescence immunoassay.ResultsThe study included 1,504 children aged 3-11 years with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection history. Among the 333 unvaccinated children, the serum SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody level was median 2.30 (IQR, 1.27-3.99). However, children received one dose (78 cases) and two doses (1093 cases) of the inactivated vaccine prior to infection showed significantly higher SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody levels, with values of median 10.11 (IQR, 8.66-10.93) and median 10.58 (IQR, 9.79-11.07), respectively. As to the unvaccinated children, 70.3% (234/333) were negative for SARS-CoV-2 Nabs, which were less than 6.00AU/ml. The remaining 29.7% (99/333) showed relatively low levels of Nabs, ranging from 6.00 to 50.00AU/ml. In contrast, for children who had received two doses of vaccine prior to infection, an overwhelming 99.3% (1086/1093) exhibited high levels of Nas in the range of 100.00-120.00 AU/ml. Remarkably, these elevated Nab levels persisted for at least a period of 3 months post-infection in children who had received two doses of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine prior to infection, regardless of age or sex and vaccine manufacturer.ConclusionThe administration of two doses of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine prior to infection has been shown to significantly enhance humoral immunity following SARS-CoV-2 infection in pediatric populations, producing adequate Nabs that persist at elevated levels for up to 3 months post-infection. For unvaccinated children who displayed weak humoral immunity following a primary natural infection, timely vaccination is recommended to bolster their immunization protection. The findings underscore the importance of vaccination in strengthening immune responses and protecting pediatric populations against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Surface charges of catalysts have important influences on the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrochemical reactions. Herein, we develop a modified version of the grand-canonical potential kinetics (GCP-K) method based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore the effect of surface charges on reaction thermodynamics and kinetics. Using the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on the Pt(111) surface as an example, we show how to track the change of surface charge in a reaction and how to analyze its influence on the kinetics. Grand-canonical calculations demonstrate that the optimum hydrogen adsorption energy on Pt under the standard hydrogen electrode condition (SHE) is around −0.2 eV, rather than 0 eV established under the canonical ensemble, due to the high density of surface negative charges. By separating the surface charges that can freely exchange with the external electron reservoir, we obtain a Tafel barrier that is in good agreement with the experimental result. During the Tafel reaction, the net electron inflow into the catalyst leads to a stabilization of canonical energy and a destabilization of the charge-dependent grand-canonical component. This study provides a practical method for obtaining accurate grand-canonical reaction energetics and analyzing the surface charge induced changes.

In the field of robotic automation, achieving high position accuracy in robotic vision systems (RVSs) is a pivotal challenge that directly impacts the efficiency and effectiveness of industrial applications. This study introduces a comprehensive modeling approach that integrates kinematic and joint compliance factors to significantly enhance the position accuracy of a system. In the first place, we develop a unified kinematic model that effectively reduces the complexity and error accumulation associated with the calibration of robotic systems. At the heart of our approach is the formulation of a joint compliance model that meticulously accounts for the intricacies of the joint connector, the external load, and the self-weight of robotic links. By employing a novel 3D rotary laser sensor for precise error measurement and model calibration, our method offers a streamlined and efficient solution for the accurate integration of vision systems into robotic operations. The efficacy of our proposed models is validated through experiments conducted on a FANUC LR Mate 200iD robot, showcasing notable improvements in the position accuracy of robotic vision system. Our findings contribute a framework for the calibration and error compensation of RVS, holding significant potential for advancements in automated tasks requiring high precision.

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to observe the morphologic characteristics of patent foramen ovale (PFO) by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), and to analyze its correlation with right-to-left shunt (RLS) of contrast-transthoracic echocardiography (c-TTE) and contrast-transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (c-TCD). Methods 124 patients with PFO were divided into four groups according to the morphological characteristics of PFO. RLS grade of each group PFO with c-TTE and c-TCD in resting and Valsalva manoeuvre was measured. Anatomical structures influencing RLS grade were analyzed statistically through multivariate logistic analyses and predictive models. Results The 124 cases of PFO were divided into four groups: 55 cases (44.4%) with smooth uniform tubular tunnel (SUT), 21 cases (16.9%) with granule uniform tubular tunnel (GUT), 23 cases (18.5%) of right funnelform, 25 cases (20.2%) of left funnelform. Between group comparisons and multivariate logistic analyses revealed that PFO morphotype and interatrial septum(IAS) mobility were influencing factors of RLS degree. During Valsalva, the probability of c-TCD RLS ≥ 2 for the right funnelform PFO was 13.428 times that of the GUT, one unit increase in IAS mobility increased the probability of c-TCD RLS ≥ 2 by a factor of 2.029, model predicted c-TCD RLS ≥ 2 with 78.1% sensitivity and 94.7% specificity; During Valsalva, the probability of c-TCD RLS ≥ 2 for the SUT PFO was 4.244 times that of the GUT, one unit increase in IAS mobility increased the probability of c-TTE RLS ≥ 2 by a factor of 2.392, model predicted c-TTE RLS ≥ 2 with 80.2% sensitivity and 87.9% specificity. Conclusions Studies have shown that the morphological structure of PFO is an influencing factor of RLS, and TEE can observe the specific morphological characteristics of PFO, which can further predict the level of RLS, help predict the occurrence of Cryptogenic stroke (CS). The above provides more evidences and surgical options for Interventional device closure indications.

Abstract Background The present study aimed to explore the application value of random survival forest (RSF) model and Cox model in predicting the progression-free survival (PFS) among patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LANPC) after induction chemotherapy plus concurrent chemoradiotherapy (IC + CCRT). Methods Eligible LANPC patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan before treatment were subjected to radiomics feature extraction. Radiomics and clinical features of patients in the training cohort were subjected to RSF analysis to predict PFS and were tested in the testing cohort. The performance of an RSF model with clinical and radiologic predictors was assessed with the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) and Delong test and compared with Cox models based on clinical and radiologic parameters. Further, the Kaplan-Meier method was used for risk stratification of patients. Results A total of 294 LANPC patients (206 in the training cohort; 88 in the testing cohort) were enrolled and underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans before treatment. The AUC value of the clinical Cox model, radiomics Cox model, clinical + radiomics Cox model, and clinical + radiomics RSF model in predicting 3- and 5-year PFS for LANPC patients was [0.545 vs 0.648 vs 0.648 vs 0.899 (training cohort), and 0.566 vs 0.736 vs 0.730 vs 0.861 (testing cohort); 0.556 vs 0.604 vs 0.611 vs 0.897 (training cohort), and 0.591 vs 0.661 vs 0.676 vs 0.847 (testing cohort), respectively]. Delong test showed that the RSF model and the other three Cox models were statistically significant, and the RSF model markedly improved prediction performance (P 0.05). Conclusion The RSF model may be a potential tool for prognostic prediction and risk stratification of LANPC patients.

Abstract Background High immune infiltration is associated with favourable prognosis in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but an automated workflow for characterizing immune infiltration, with high validity and reliability, remains to be developed. Methods We performed a multicentre retrospective study of patients with completely resected NSCLC. We developed an image analysis workflow for automatically evaluating the density of CD3+ and CD8+ T-cells in the tumour regions on immunohistochemistry (IHC)-stained whole-slide images (WSIs), and proposed an immune scoring system “I-score” based on the automated assessed cell density. Results A discovery cohort (n = 145) and a validation cohort (n = 180) were used to assess the prognostic value of the I-score for disease-free survival (DFS). The I-score (two-category) was an independent prognostic factor after adjusting for other clinicopathologic factors. Compared with a low I-score (two-category), a high I-score was associated with significantly superior DFS in the discovery cohort (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 0.54; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.33–0.86; P = 0.010) and validation cohort (adjusted HR, 0.57; 95% CI 0.36–0.92; P = 0.022). The I-score improved the prognostic stratification when integrating it into the Cox proportional hazard regression models with other risk factors (discovery cohort, C-index 0.742 vs. 0.728; validation cohort, C-index 0.695 vs. 0.685). Conclusion This automated workflow and immune scoring system would advance the clinical application of immune microenvironment evaluation and support the clinical decision making for patients with resected NSCLC.

Background: There is increasing evidence that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) can be used as potential prognostic factors for cancer. This study aimed to develop a prognostic model for lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) using angiogenesis-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) as potential prognostic factors.Methods: Transcriptome data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) were analyzed to identify aberrantly expressed angiogenesis-related lncRNAs in LUAD. A prognostic signature was constructed using differential expression analysis, overlap analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and Cox regression analysis. The model’s validity was assessed using K-M and ROC curves, and independent external validation was performed in the GSE30219 dataset. Prognostic lncRNA-microRNA (miRNA)-messenger RNA (mRNA) competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks were identified. Immune cell infiltration and mutational characteristics were also analyzed. The expression of four human angiogenesis-associated lncRNAs was quantified using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) gene arrays.Results: A total of 26 aberrantly expressed angiogenesis-related lncRNAs in LUAD were identified, and a Cox risk model based on LINC00857, RBPMS-AS1, SYNPR-AS1, and LINC00460 was constructed, which may be an independent prognostic predictor for LUAD. The low-risk group had a significant better prognosis and was associated with a higher abundance of resting immune cells and a lower expression of immune checkpoint molecules. Moreover, 105 ceRNA mechanisms were predicted based on the four prognostic lncRNAs. qRT-PCR results showed that LINC00857, SYNPR-AS1, and LINC00460 were significantly highly expressed in tumor tissues, while RBPMS-AS1 was highly expressed in paracancerous tissues.Conclusion: The four angiogenesis-related lncRNAs identified in this study could serve as a promising prognostic biomarker for LUAD patients.

Abstract Cancers are immunologically heterogeneous. A range of immunotherapies target abnormal tumor immunity via different mechanisms of actions (MOAs), particularly various tumor-infiltrate leukocytes (TILs). We modeled loss of function (LOF) in four common anti-PD-1 antibody-responsive syngeneic tumors, MC38, Hepa1-6, CT-26 and EMT-6, by systematical depleting a series of TIL lineages to explore the mechanisms of tumor immunity and treatment. CD8+-T-cells, CD4+-T-cells, Treg, NK cells and macrophages were individually depleted through either direct administration of anti-marker antibodies/reagents or using DTR (diphtheria toxin receptor) knock-in mice, for some syngeneic tumors, where specific subsets were depleted following diphtheria toxin (DT) administration. These LOF experiments revealed distinctive intrinsic tumor immunity and thus different MOAs in their responses to anti-PD-1 antibody among different syngeneic tumors. Specifically, the intrinsic tumor immunity and the associated anti-PD-1 MOA were predominately driven by CD8+ cytotoxic TILs (CTL) in all syngeneic tumors, excluding Hepa1-6 where CD4+ Teff TILs played a key role. TIL-Treg also played a critical role in supporting tumor growth in all four syngeneic models as well as M2-macrophages. Pathway analysis using pharmacodynamic readouts of immuno-genomics and proteomics on MC38 and Hepa1-6 also revealed defined, but distinctive, immune pathways of activation and suppression between the two, closely associated with the efficacy and consistent with TIL-pharmacodynamic readouts. Understanding tumor immune-pathogenesis and treatment MOAs in the different syngeneic animal models, not only assists the selection of the right model for evaluating new immunotherapy of a given MOA, but also can potentially help to understand the potential disease mechanisms and strategize optimal immune-therapies in patients.

Abstract The protection of marine materials against corrosion using marine bacterial biofilms is a promising strategy. However, little is known about the mechanisms of this attractive corrosion prevention method. In this work, the corrosion behaviors of X80 carbon steel (CS) in the presence of three different marine Vibrio species were studied. The results demonstrated that all the three Vibrio spp. displayed significant corrosion protection with a weight loss reduction of up to 68%. Moreover, their corrosion prevention performance was tightly related to their abilities to form biofilms, which was in the order of Vibrio sp. EF187016 > Vibrio alginolyticus > Vibrio parahaemolyticus. To further investigate the corrosion prevention mechanism caused by marine biofilms, the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of Vibrio sp. EF187016 was extracted and added to 3.5 wt% NaCl for abiotic corrosion testing. The results suggested that the EPS inhibited corrosion, which means EPS can play a significant role in corrosion protection by biofilm.

BackgroundOral microbiota is closely related to the homeostasis of the oral cavity and lungs. To provide potential information for the prediction, screening, and treatment strategies of individuals, this study compared and investigated the bacterial signatures in periodontitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).Materials and methodsWe collected subgingival plaque and gingival crevicular fluid samples from 112 individuals (31 healthy controls, 24 patients with periodontitis, 28 patients with COPD, and 29 patients with both periodontitis and COPD). The oral microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and diversity and functional prediction analysis were performed.ResultsWe observed higher bacterial richness in individuals with periodontitis in both types of oral samples. Using LEfSe and DESeq2 analyses, we found differentially abundant genera that may be potential biomarkers for each group. Mogibacterium is the predominant genus in COPD. Ten genera, including Desulfovibrio, Filifactor, Fretibacterium, Moraxella, Odoribacter, Pseudoramibacter Pyramidobacter, Scardovia, Shuttleworthia and Treponema were predominant in periodontitis. Bergeyella, Lautropia, Rothia, Propionibacterium and Cardiobacterium were the signature of the healthy controls. The significantly different pathways in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) between healthy controls and other groups were concentrated in genetic information processing, translation, replication and repair, and metabolism of cofactors and vitamins.ConclusionsWe found the significant differences in the bacterial community and functional characterization of oral microbiota in periodontitis, COPD and comorbid diseases. Compared to gingival crevicular fluid, subgingival plaque may be more appropriate for reflecting the difference of subgingival microbiota in periodontitis patients with COPD. These results may provide potentials for predicting, screening, and treatment strategies for individuals with periodontitis and COPD.

Patient-derived tumor xenograft (PDX)/organoid (PDO), driven by cancer stem cells (CSC), are considered the most predictive models for translational oncology. Large PDX collections reflective of patient populations have been created and used extensively to test various investigational therapies, including population-trials as surrogate subjects in vivo. PDOs are recognized as in vitro surrogates for patients amenable for high-throughput screening (HTS). We have built a biobank of carcinoma PDX-derived organoids (PDXOs) by converting an existing PDX library and confirmed high degree of similarities between PDXOs and parental PDXs in genomics, histopathology and pharmacology, suggesting “biological equivalence or interchangeability” between the two. Here we demonstrate the applications of PDXO biobank for HTS “matrix” screening for both lead compounds and indications, immune cell co-cultures for immune-therapies and engineering enables in vitro/in vivo imaging. This large biobank of >550 matched pairs of PDXs/PDXOs across different cancers could become powerful tools for the future cancer drug discovery.

Introduction Segmentectomy and lobectomy are the main surgical procedures for early-stage lung cancer. However, few studies have analysed patient-reported outcomes after segmentectomy versus lobectomy. This study aims to compare patient-reported outcomes—such as symptoms, daily functioning and quality of life—between thoracoscopic segmentectomy and lobectomy for early-stage lung cancer during the 1 year after surgery.Methods and analysis Overall, 788 newly diagnosed patients with early-stage lung cancer (tumour size ≤2 cm), who are scheduled to undergo thoracoscopic segmentectomy or lobectomy, will be recruited in this multicentre, prospective cohort study. The patients will receive standardised care after surgery. The Perioperative Symptom Assessment for Lung Surgery—a validated lung cancer surgery-specific scale—will be used to assess the symptoms and functions at baseline, at discharge and monthly after discharge for 1 year. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 and Lung Cancer module 29 will be used to assess the patients’ quality of life at the same time points. The primary outcome will be the shortness of breath scores during the first year after thoracoscopic segmentectomy and lobectomy and will be compared using mixed-effects models. The secondary outcomes will include other symptoms, indicators of daily functioning, quality of life scores and traditional clinical outcomes. These will be compared using mixed-effects models and the Student’s t-test, non-parametric test or Χ2 test. Propensity score matching will be used to ensure an even distribution of known confounders between the groups.Ethics and dissemination The Ethics Committee for Medical Research and New Medical Technology of Sichuan Cancer Hospital approved this study (approval number: SCCHEC-02-2022-002). All participants will be instructed to provide informed consent. The manuscript is based on protocol version 3.0. The development of distinguished photocatalysts with high photo-carrier disassociation and photo-redox power for efficient elimination of pollutants in water is of great significance but still a grand challenge. Herein, a novel Cd0.5Zn0.5S/Bi2WO6 S-scheme heterojunction was built up by integrating Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanoparticles on Bi2WO6 microspheres via a simple route. The S-scheme charge transfer mode substantially boosts the high-energetic electrons/holes spatial detachment and conservation on the Cd0.5Zn0.5S (reduction) and Bi2WO6 (oxidation), respectively, as well as effectively suppresses the photo-corrosion of Cd0.5Zn0.5S, rendering Cd0.5Zn0.5S/Bi2WO6 photocatalysts with superior redox ability. The optimal Cd0.5Zn0.5S/Bi2WO6 heterojunction achieves exceptional visible-light-driven photocatalytic tetracycline degradation and Cr(VI) reduction efficiency, 3.2 (1.9)-time and 33.6 (1.6)-time stronger than that of neat Bi2WO6 (Cd0.5Zn0.5S), while retaining the superior stability and reusability. This research not only offers a potential photocatalyst for aquatic environment protection but also promotes the exploration of novel and powerful chalcogenides-based S-scheme photocatalysts for environment protection.
