Abstract

Abstract In this work, we want to highlight the potential of lithium as a target for spin-dependent dark matter search in cryogenic experiments, with a special focus on the low-mass region of the parameter space. We operated a prototype detector module based on a $$\hbox {Li}_2\hbox {MoO}_4$$ Li2MoO4 target crystal in an above-ground laboratory. Despite the high background environment, the detector sets a competitive limit on spin-dependent interactions of dark matter particles with protons and neutrons for masses between $$0.8~\hbox {GeV/c}^2$$ 0.8GeV/c2 and $$1.5~\hbox {GeV/c}^2$$ 1.5GeV/c2 .

Abstract

Abstract CRESST is a direct dark matter search experiment, aiming for an observation of nuclear recoils induced by the interaction of dark matter particles with cryogenic scintillating calcium tungstate crystals. Instead of confining ourselves to standard spin-independent and spin-dependent searches, we re-analyze data from CRESST-II using a more general effective field theory (EFT) framework. On many of the EFT coupling constants, improved exclusion limits in the low-mass region (< 3–4 GeV/$$c^2$$ c2 ) are presented.

Abstract

Abstract Models for light dark matter particles with masses below 1 GeV/c $$^2$$ 2 are a natural and well-motivated alternative to so-far unobserved weakly interacting massive particles. Gram-scale cryogenic calorimeters provide the required detector performance to detect these particles and extend the direct dark matter search program of CRESST. A prototype 0.5 g sapphire detector developed for the $$\nu $$ ν -cleus experiment has achieved an energy threshold of $$E_{th}=(19.7\pm 0.9)$$ E t h = ( 19.7 ± 0.9 ) eV. This is one order of magnitude lower than for previous devices and independent of the type of particle interaction. The result presented here is obtained in a setup above ground without significant shielding against ambient and cosmogenic radiation. Although operated in a high-background environment, the detector probes a new range of light-mass dark matter particles previously not accessible by direct searches. We report the first limit on the spin-independent dark matter particle-nucleon cross section for masses between 140 and 500 MeV/c $$^2$$ 2 .

Abstract

Abstract Identifying the nature and origin of dark matter is one of the major challenges for modern astro and particle physics. Direct dark-matter searches aim at an observation of dark-matter particles interacting within detectors. The focus of several such searches is on interactions with nuclei as provided e.g. by weakly interacting massive particles. However, there is a variety of dark-matter candidates favoring interactions with electrons rather than with nuclei. One example are dark photons, i.e., long-lived vector particles with a kinetic mixing to standard-model photons. In this work we present constraints on this kinetic mixing based on data from CRESST-II Phase 2 corresponding to an exposure before cuts of 52 kg-days. These constraints improve the existing ones for dark-photon masses between 0.3 and 0.7 keV/c $$^2$$ 2 .

Abstract

We present the design and characterization of a large-area Cryogenic PhotoDetector (CPD) designed for active particle identification in rare event searches, such as neutrinoless double beta decay and dark matter experiments. The detector consists of a $45.6$ $\mathrm{cm}^2$ surface area by 1-mm-thick $10.6$ $\mathrm{g}$ Si wafer. It is instrumented with a distributed network of Quasiparticle-trap-assisted Electrothermal feedback Transition-edge sensors (QETs) with superconducting critical temperature $T_c=41.5$ $\mathrm{mK}$ to measure athermal phonons released from interactions with photons. The detector is characterized and calibrated with a collimated $^{55}$Fe X-ray source incident on the center of the detector. The noise equivalent power is measured to be $1\times 10^{-17}$ $\mathrm{W}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ in a bandwidth of $2.7$ $\mathrm{kHz}$. The baseline energy resolution is measured to be $\sigma_E = 3.86 \pm 0.04$ $(\mathrm{stat.})^{+0.23}_{-0.00}$ $(\mathrm{syst.})$ $\mathrm{eV}$ (RMS). The detector also has an expected timing resolution of $\sigma_t = 2.3$ $\mu\mathrm{s}$ for $5$ $\sigma_E$ events., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The Physics Department of the Technical University of Munich operates a shallow underground detector laboratory in Garching, Germany. It provides $$\sim 160\,{\mathrm{m}^2}$$ of laboratory space which is shielded from cosmic radiation by $$\sim 6\,\mathrm{m}$$ of gravel and soil, corresponding to a shielding of $$\sim 15\,{\mathrm{m.w.e.}}$$ . The laboratory also houses a cleanroom equipped with work- and wetbenches, a chemical fumehood as well as a spin-coater and a mask-aligner for photolithographic processing of semiconductor detectors. Furthermore, the shallow underground laboratory runs two high-purity germanium detector screening stations, a liquid argon cryostat and a $$^3$$ He– $$^4$$ He dilution refrigerator with a base temperature of $$\le 12-14\,\mathrm{mK}$$ . The infrastructure provided by the shallow laboratory is particularly relevant for the characterization of $$\hbox {CaWO}_4$$ target crystals for the CRESST-III experiment, detector fabrication and assembly for rare event searches. Future applications of the laboratory include detector development in the framework of coherent neutrino nucleus scattering experiments ( $$\nu $$ -cleus) and studying its potential as a site to search for MeV-scale dark matter with gram-scale cryogenic detectors.

Abstract

The CRESST experiment (Cryogenic Rare Even Search with Superconducting Thermometers), located at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, searches for dark matter particles via their elastic scattering off nuclei in a target material. The CRESST target consists of scintillating CaWO4 crystals, which are operated as cryogenic calorimeters at millikelvin temperatures. Each interaction in the CaWO4 target crystal produces a phonon signal and a light signal that is measured by a second cryogenic calorimeter. Since the CRESST-II result in 2015, the experiment is leading the field of direct dark matter search for dark matter masses below 1.7 GeV/c 2, extending the reach of direct searches to the sub-GeV/c 2 mass region. For CRESST-III, whose Phase 1 started in July 2016, detectors have been optimized to reach the performance required to further probe the low-mass region with unprecedented sensitivity. In this contribution the achievements of the CRESST-III detectors will be discussed together with preliminary results and perspectives of Phase 1.

Abstract

The CRESST-III experiment which is dedicated to low-mass dark matter search uses scintillating CaWO$_4$ crystals operated as cryogenic particle detectors. Background discrimination is achieved by exploiting the scintillating light signal of CaWO$_4$ and by a novel active detector holder presented in this paper. In a test setup above ground, a nuclear-recoil energy threshold of $E_{th}=(190.6\pm5.2)$eV is reached with a 24g prototype detector, which corresponds to an estimated threshold of $\sim$50eV when being operated in the low-noise CRESST cryostat. This is the lowest threshold reported for direct dark matter searches. For CRESST-III phase 1, ten such detector modules were installed in the cryostat which have the potential to improve significantly the sensitivity to scatterings of dark matter particles with masses down to $\sim$0.1GeV/c$^2$., 12 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The CRESST-III experiment (Cryogenic Rare Events Search with Superconducting Thermometers), located at the underground facility Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, uses scintillating CaWO $$_4$$ crystals as cryogenic calorimeters to search for direct dark matter interactions in detectors. A large part of the parameter space for spin-independent scattering off nuclei remains untested for dark matter particles with masses below a few GeV/c $$^2$$ , despite many naturally motivated theoretical models for light dark matter particles. The CRESST-III detectors are designed to achieve the performance required to probe the low-mass region of the parameter space with a sensitivity never reached before. In this paper, new results on the performance and an overview of the CRESST-III detectors will be presented, emphasizing the results about the low-energy threshold for nuclear recoil of CRESST-III Phase 1 which started collecting data in August 2016.

Each detector module consists of a scintillating CaWO $$_4$$ crystal and a silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) light detector which operate in coincidence (phonon-light technique). The 40-mm-diameter SOS disks (2 g mass) used in the data taking campaign of CRESST-II Phase 2 (2014–2016) reached absolute baseline resolutions of $$\sigma =$$ 4–7 eV. This is the best performance reported for cryogenic light detectors of this size. Newly developed silicon beaker light detectors (4 cm height, 4 cm diameter, 6 g mass), which cover a large fraction of the target crystal surface, have achieved a baseline resolution of $$\sigma = 5.8\,$$ eV. First results of further improved light detectors developed for the ongoing low-threshold CRESST-III experiment are presented.

Abstract

Models for light dark matter particles with masses below 1 GeV/c $$^2$$ are a natural and well-motivated alternative to so-far unobserved weakly interacting massive particles. Gram-scale cryogenic calorimeters provide the required detector performance to detect these particles and extend the direct dark matter search program of CRESST. A prototype 0.5 g sapphire detector developed for the $$\nu $$ -cleus experiment has achieved an energy threshold of $$E_{th}=(19.7\pm 0.9)$$ eV. This is one order of magnitude lower than for previous devices and independent of the type of particle interaction. The result presented here is obtained in a setup above ground without significant shielding against ambient and cosmogenic radiation. Although operated in a high-background environment, the detector probes a new range of light-mass dark matter particles previously not accessible by direct searches. We report the first limit on the spin-independent dark matter particle-nucleon cross section for masses between 140 and 500 MeV/c $$^2$$ .

Abstract

Identifying the nature and origin of dark matter is one of the major challenges for modern astro and particle physics. Direct dark-matter searches aim at an observation of dark-matter particles interacting within detectors. The focus of several such searches is on interactions with nuclei as provided e.g. by Weakly Interacting Massive Particles. However, there is a variety of dark-matter candidates favoring interactions with electrons rather than with nuclei. One example are dark photons, i.e., long-lived vector particles with a kinetic mixing to standard-model photons. In this work we present constraints on this kinetic mixing based on data from CRESST-II Phase 2 corresponding to an exposure before cuts of 52\,kg-days. Abstract

In this work we investigate the reflectivity of highly reflective multilayer polymer foils used in the CRESST experiment. The CRESST experiment searches directly for dark matter via operating scintillating CaWO$_4$ crystals as targets for elastic dark matter-nucleon scattering. In order to suppress background events, the experiment employs the so-called phonon-light technique which is based on the simultaneous measurement of the heat signal in the main CaWO$_4$ target crystal and of the emitted scintillation light with a separate cryogenic light detector. Both detectors are surrounded by a highly reflective and scintillating multilayer polymer foil to increase the light collection efficiency and to veto surface backgrounds. While this study is motivated by the CRESST experiment, the results are also relevant for other rare event searches using scintillating cryogenic bolometers in the field of the search of dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$). In this work a dedicated experiment has been set up to determine the relative reflectivity at 300 K and 20 K of three multilayer foils ("VM2000", "VM2002", "Vikuiti") produced by the company 3M. The intensity of a light beam reflected off the foil is measured with a CCD camera. The ratio of the intensities at 300 K and 20 K corresponds to the relative reflectivity change. Abstract

Understanding the nature and origin of dark matter is one of the most important challenges for modern particle physics. During the previous decade the sensitivities of direct dark matter searches have improved by several orders of magnitude. These experiments focus their work mainly on the search for dark-matter particles interacting with nuclei (e.g. Weakly Interacting Massive Particles, WIMPs). However, there exists a large variety of different candidates for dark-matter particles. One of these candidates, the so-called dark photon, is a long-lived vector boson with a kinetic mixing to the standard-model photon. In this work we present the preliminary results of our search for dark photons. Using data from the direct dark matter search CRESST-II Phase 2 we can improve the existing constraints for the kinetic mixing for dark-photon masses between 0.3 and 0.5 keV/c2. In addition, we also present projected sensitivities for the next phases of the CRESST-III experiment showing great potential to improve the sensitivity for dark-photon masses below 1 keV.

Abstract

The CRESST-III experiment, located in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS, Italy), aims at the direct detection of dark matter (DM) particles. Scintillating CaWO(4) crystals operated as cryogenic detectors are used as target material for DM-nucleus scattering. The simultaneous measurement of the phonon signal from the CaWO(4) crystal and of the emitted scintillation light in a separate cryogenic light detector is used to discriminate backgrounds from a possible dark matter signal. The experiment aims to significantly improve the sensitivity for low-mass (≲ 5-10 GeV/c(2)) DM particles by using optimized detector modules with a nuclear recoil-energy threshold ≲ 100 eV. The current status of the experiment as well as projections of the sensitivity for spin-independent DM-nucleon scattering will be presented.

Cryogenic rare event searches based on heat and light composite calorimeters have a common need for large area photon detectors with high quantum efficiency, good radiopurity and high sensitivity. By employing the Neganov-Trofimov-Luke effect (NTLE), the phonon signal of particle interactions in a semiconductor absorber operated at cryogenic temperatures can be amplified by drifting the photogenerated electrons and holes in an electric field. Abstract

The next generation direct dark matter experiment CRESST-III has a high potential to significantly increase the sensitivity to low-mass WIMPs (mx ≲10 GeV/c2). We present the new CRESST detector module: it consists of a 24 g CaWO4 crystal operated as a phonon detector and a 20x20 mm^2 silicon-on-sapphire light detector. The phonon energy threshold is lowered to ~100 eV and a light detector resolution of typically 5 eV is achieved. A fully-scintillating inner detector housing is realised which efficiently rejects events from surface alpha decays. The CaWO4 sticks holding the target crystal are also operated as calorimeters to discriminate all possible artefacts related to the support structure. A projection for the sensitivity to spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering is given for the first phase of CRESSTIII which will start beginning of 2016.

Abstract

The CRESST-II experiment is searching for dark matter particles via their elastic scattering off nuclei in a target material. The CRESST target consists of scintillating CaW04 crystals which are operated as cryogenic calorimeters at millikelvin temperatures and read out by transition edge sensors. Each interaction in the CaW04 target crystal produces a phonon signal and also a light signal that is measured by a secondary cryogenic calorimeter. The low energy thresholds of these detectors, combined with the presence of light nuclei in the target material, allow to probe the low-mass region of the parameter space for spin-independent dark matter-nucleon scattering with high sensitivity. In this contribution results from a blind analysis of one detector module operated in the latest measurement campaign are presented. An unprecedented sensitivity for the light dark matter has been obtained with 52kg live days and a threshold of 307eV for nuclear recoils, extending the reach of direct dark matter searches to the sub-GeV/c2 region.

Abstract

We analyzed low-background data from the CRESST-II experiment with a total net exposure of 730 kg days to extract limits on double electron capture processes. We established new limits for $^{40}$Ca with $T_{1/2}^{2v2K}>9.9\times10^{21}$ y and $T_{1/2}^{0v2EC}>1.4\times10^{22}$ y and for $^{180}$W with T$_{1/2}^{2v2K}>3.1\times10^{19}$ y and $T_{1/2}^{0v2EC}>9.4\times10^{18}$ y at 90% CL. Depending on the process, these values improve the currently best limits by a factor of $\sim$1.4-30.

Abstract

The usual assumption in direct dark matter searches is to only consider the spin-dependent or spin-independent scattering of dark matter particles. However, especially in models with light dark matter particles $\mathcal{O}(\mathrm{GeV/c^2})$, operators which carry additional powers of the momentum transfer $q^2$ can become dominant. One such model based on asymmetric dark matter has been invoked to overcome discrepancies in helioseismology and an indication was found for a particle with preferred mass of 3 $\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$ and cross section of $10^{-37} \mathrm{cm^2}$. Recent data from the CRESST-II experiment, which uses cryogenic detectors based on $\mathrm{CaWO_4}$ to search for nuclear recoils induced by dark matter particles, are used to constrain these momentum-dependent models. The low energy threshold of 307 eV for nuclear recoils of the detector used, allows us to rule out the proposed best fit value above., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

A new design of a cryogenic germanium detector for dark matter search is presented, taking advantage of the coplanar grid technique of event localisation for improved background discrimination. Experiments performed with prototype devices in the EDELWEISS II setup at the Modane underground facility demonstrate the remarkably high efficiency of these devices for the rejection of low-energy $\beta$, approaching 10$^5$ . This opens the road to investigate the range beyond 10$^{-8}$ pb in the WIMP-nucleon collision cross-sections, as proposed in the EURECA project of a one-ton cryogenic detector mass., Comment: submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract

A new design of an ionization-heat germanium detector for dark matter search is presented, based on the use of interleaved electrodes for charge collection. This device allows active rejection of surface events by performing the appropriate cuts in the charge measurement data. Test experiments were performed with a prototype device, fitted with annular collection electrodes and with a neutron transmutation-doped Ge thermometer. Calibration runs with gamma and neutron sources demonstrate the remarkable possibilities offered by this type of detector in terms of surface event discrimination.

Detectors fitted with interleaved collection electrodes offer a promising solution to the problem of surface event rejection in cryogenic Ge detectors for dark matter search. Detector design and modeling are discussed, based on computer simulations of the collection field and on pulse-shape analysis of the ionization signals. Test experiments with a prototype detector are presented in a companion paper by X. Defay et al. in this conference.

Abstract

The heat quenching factor Q' (the ratio of the heat signals produced by nuclear and electron recoils of equal energy) of the heat-and-ionization germanium bolometers used by the EDELWEISS collaboration has been measured. It is explained how this factor affects the energy scale and the effective quenching factor observed in calibrations with neutron sources. This effective quenching effect is found to be equal to Q/Q', where Q is the quenching factor of the ionization yield. To measure Q', a precise EDELWEISS measurement of Q/Q' is combined with values of Q obtained from a review of all available measurements of this quantity in tagged neutron beam experiments. The systematic uncertainties associated with this method to evaluate Q' are discussed in detail. For recoil energies between 20 and 100 keV, the resulting heat quenching factor is Q' = 0.91+-0.03+-0.04, where the two errors are the contributions from the Q and Q/Q' measurements, respectively. The present compilation of Q values and evaluation of Q' represent one of the most precise determinations of the absolute energy scale for any detector used in direct searches for dark matter., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

There is a common need in astroparticle experiments such as direct dark matter detection, 0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta} (double beta decay without emission of neutrinos) and Coherent Neutrino Nucleus Scattering experiments for light detectors with a very low energy threshold. By employing the Neganov-Luke Effect, the thermal signal of particle interactions in a semiconductor absorber operated at cryogenic temperatures, can be amplified by drifting the photogenerated electrons and holes in an electric field. This technology is not used in current experiments, in particular because of a reduction of the signal amplitude with time which is due to trapping of the charges within the absorber. Abstract

X-ray spectra following charge-exchange collisions between C${}^{6+}$ and He are presented for collision energies between 460 and 32 000 eV/u. Spectra were obtained at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Multicharged Ion Research Facility using a microcalorimeter x-ray detector capable of fully resolving the C vi Lyman series lines through Ly-$\ensuremath{\gamma}$. These line ratios are sensitive to the initial electron $\ensuremath{\ell}$ distribution and test our understanding of the charge-exchange process. In addition, these line ratios are important for identifying charge exchange in astrophysical contexts involving the interaction of solar wind ions with neutrals. Our measurements are performed at collision velocities (300--2500 km/s) which overlap most of the solar wind range. Additional data of this type can be combined with computations to provide an extensive set of reliable line ratios and absolute cross sections for the interpretation of a variety of astrophysical situations.

Abstract

Interest in astrophysical sources of charge exchange X-rays has been growing steadily since the discovery of X-ray emission from the comet Hyakutake with ROSAT in 1996. Since then, charge exchange has been observed between solar wind ions and neutrals in the geocorona and in the atmospheres of Mars and Jupiter. Charge exchange with interstellar neutrals within the heliosphere between solar wind ions and neutral hydrogen and helium from the interstellar medium is now acknowledged as contributing a considerable (although currently unknown) fraction of the soft X-ray background. We make a brief survey of the heliospheric, Galactic, and extragalactic systems in which charge exchange has been observed or is predicted to take place. Experiments measuring velocity dependent cross-section and line ratios for Lyman-series lines and He-like triplets are needed to check current theoretical models of charge exchange emission and aid interpretation of observations. Abstract

The CDMS and EDELWEISS collaborations have combined the results of their direct searches for dark matter using cryogenic germanium detectors. The total data set represents 614 kg.d equivalent exposure. A straightforward method of combination was chosen for its simplicity before data were exchanged between experiments. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-section. For a WIMP mass of 90 GeV/c^2, where this analysis is most sensitive, a cross-section of 3.3 x 10^{-44} cm^2 is excluded at 90% CL. At higher WIMP masses, the combination improves the individual limits, by a factor 1.6 above 700 GeV/c^2. Alternative methods of combining the data provide stronger constraints for some ranges of WIMP masses and weaker constraints for others., Events, efficiencies, and main limit are available in text format (see README.txt)

Abstract

Muon-induced neutrons constitute a prominent background component in a number of low count rate experiments, namely direct searches for Dark Matter. In this work we describe a neutron detector to measure this background in an underground laboratory, the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane. The system is based on 1 m3 of Gd-loaded scintillator and it is linked with the muon veto of the EDELWEISS-II experiment for coincident muon detection. The system was installed in autumn 2008 and passed since then a number of commissioning tests proving its full functionality. The data-taking is continuously ongoing and a count rate of the order of 1 muon-induced neutron per day has been achieved., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics; 14 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

A new design for the Ge bolometers of the EDELWEISS project is described here, based on innovative interleaved charge collection electrodes with high background discrimination capabilities. The measured surface event rejection is compatible with WIMP sensitivity levels down to 10−9 picobarn (pb). Use of interleaved electrodes on the overall surface of the Ge crystal, including its lateral surface, results to a high fiducial volume of the order of 80%. Electronic setup is fairly simple with a total of five JFET based read‐out amplifiers, one for the NTD‐Ge heat channel and four for the ionization signal. Fabrication process is quite simple and the design is easily scalable to higher mass bolometers (1 kg Ge crystal), making it very appealing for the future 1 ton scale EUREKA Dark Matter experiment.

Abstract

International audience; Operation of the germanium cryogenic detectors for dark matter search requires an efficient procedure for surface and space-charge cancellation. Methods of detector reset have been studied for use with the newly commissioned coplanar grid detectors of the EDELWEISS collaboration. To this end, we have investigated several reset procedures, using both penetrating gamma radiation, and infrared LEDs of different wavelengths (1.65, 1.45, and 1.3 mu m) to inject carriers at varying depths from the detector surfaces. Criteria are defined to characterize the efficiency of these different reset procedures, and the resulting performances of charge collection are discussed.

Abstract

Near-surface-events are a major limitation to the performance of cryogenic massive germanium heat and ionisation detectors for dark matter search, due to their incomplete charge collection. We present here a powerful method of surface event identification based on the transient heat signal of a Ge bolometer, equipped with two NbSi high impedance thin film sensors. Calibration runs using electrons and low energy gamma particles from a Cd-109 source show highly effective surface event rejection down to the heat threshold energy. Neutron and gamma source calibrations were realised to get information on the fiducial volume of the Ge absorber. First results from low background data taking are discussed.

International audience; This paper presents our interpretation and understanding of the different backgrounds in the EDELWEISS-I data sets. We analyze in detail the several populations observed, which include gammas, alphas, neutrons, thermal sensor events and surface events, and try to combine all data sets to provide a coherent picture of the nature and localisation of the background sources. In light of this interpretation, we draw conclusions regarding the background suppression scheme for the EDELWEISS-II phase.

Abstract

Abstract   Near-surface-events are a major limitation to the performance of cryogenic massive germanium heat and ionisation detectors for dark matter search, due to their incomplete charge collection. We present here a powerful method of surface event identification based on the transient heat signal of a Ge bolometer, equipped with two NbSi high impedance thin film sensors. Calibration runs using electrons and low energy gamma particles from a 109Cd source show highly effective surface event rejection down to the heat threshold energy. Neutron and gamma source calibrations were realised to get information on the fiducial volume of the Ge absorber. First results from low background data taking are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The CRESST-II (Cryogenic Rare Event Search with Superconducting Thermometers) experiment, whose second phase has been successfully finished in summer 2015, aims at the direct detection of dark matter particles. The intrinsic radiopurity of CaWO $$_4$$ crystals, the capability to reject recoil events from alpha-surface contamination, and the energy threshold were significantly improved compared to previous runs of the experiment. A moderate exposure of 29 kg-days acquired by one $$\sim $$ 250 g CaWO $$_4$$ detector provides competitive limits on the spin-independent dark matter particle-nucleon cross section and probes a new region of parameter space for dark matter particle masses below 3 GeV/c $$^2$$ . The potential for low-mass dark matter particle search can be further exploited by a new detector design planned for CRESST-III. We describe the experimental strategy for the near future and give projections for the sensitivity.

Abstract

EURECA (European Underground Rare Event Calorimeter Array) is an astro-particle physics facility aiming to directly detect galactic dark matter. The Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane has been selected as host laboratory. The EURECA collaboration unites CRESST, EDELWEISS and the Spanish-French experiment ROSEBUD, thus concentrating and focussing effort on cryogenic detector research in Europe into a single facility. EURECA will use a target mass of up to one ton, enough to explore WIMP - nucleon scalar scattering cross sections in the region of 10-9 - 10-10 picobarn. A major advantage of EURECA is the planned use of more than just one target material (multi target experiment for WIMP identification). © EAS, EDP Sciences 2009.

Abstract

In the past years the spotlight of the search for dark matter particles widened to the low mass region, both from theoretical and experimental side. We discuss results from data obtained in 2013 with a single detector TUM40. This detector is equipped with a new upgraded holding scheme to efficiently veto backgrounds induced by surface alpha decays. This veto, the low threshold of 0.6keV and an unprecedented background level for CaWO$_4$ target crystals render TUM40 the detector with the best overall performance of CRESST-II phase 2 (July 2013 - August 2015). Abstract

It has been proven by several astronomical observations that dark matter exists, but no particle candidates have been observed yet. The CRESST experiment aims to directly detect dark matter particles elastically scattering off nuclei in CaWO4 crystals which are operated at mK temperatures. With nuclear recoil energy thresholds as low as 0.3 keV [2] and 0.6 keV [3], for the detector modules LISE and TUM40, respectively, CRESST is ideally suited for the detection of low-mass dark matter particles [5]. Additionally, the radiopurity of the crystals is another important factor for the detector performance. For a detailed understanding of the detector backgrounds, we simulate the radioactive contaminations of the TUM40 detector module with Geant4. The outcome of this simulation will be vital for the CRESST-III experiment. In this contribution, we discuss our results of the search for dark matter and dark photons achieved with the detector module Lise of CRESST-II. We will discuss the status of CRESST-III Phase 1 which started taking data in 2016.

Abstract

The usual assumption in direct dark matter searches is to consider only the spin-dependent or spin-independent scattering of dark matter particles. However, especially in models with light dark matter particles O(GeV/c^{2}), operators which carry additional powers of the momentum transfer q^{2} can become dominant. One such model based on asymmetric dark matter has been invoked to overcome discrepancies in helioseismology and an indication was found for a particle with a preferred mass of 3  GeV/c^{2} and a cross section of 10^{-37}  cm^{2}. Recent data from the CRESST-II experiment, which uses cryogenic detectors based on CaWO&#95;{4} to search for nuclear recoils induced by dark matter particles, are used to constrain these momentum-dependent models. The low energy threshold of 307 eV for nuclear recoils of the detector used, allows us to rule out the proposed best fit value above.

48. X-ray Emission Measurements following Charge Exchange Between C 6+ and He.

Abstract

X-ray spectra following charge exchange collisions between C 6+ and He are presented for collision energies between 460 eV/u and 32,000 eV/u. Spectra were obtained at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Multicharged Ion Research Facility using a microcalorimeter X-ray detector capable of fully resolving the C VI Lyman series lines through Ly-γ. These line ratios are sensitive to the initial electron l -distribution and test our understanding of the charge exchange process. In addition, these line ratios are important for identifying charge exchange in astrophysical contexts involving the interaction of solar wind ions with neutrals. Our measurements are performed at collision velocities (300 km/s to 2500 km/s) which overlap most of the solar wind range. Additional data of this type can be combined with computations to provide an extensive set of reliable line ratios and absolute cross sections for the interpretation of a variety of astrophysical situations.
