A novel application of single particle scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy is presented for quantitative analysis of hygroscopic properties and phase transitions of individual submicrometer particles. The approach utilizes the exposure of substrate-deposited individual particles to water vapor at different relative humidity followed by STXM/NEXAFS spectromicroscopy analysis. The hygroscopic properties of atmospherically relevant NaCl, NaBr, NaI, and NAN[O.sub.3] submicrometer particles were measured to evaluate the utility of the approach. An analytical approach for quantification of a water-to-solute ratio within an individual submicrometer particle during hydration and dehydration cycles is presented. The results for the deliquescence and efflorescence phase transitions and quantitative measurements of water-to-solute ratios are found in excellent agreement with available literature data. Oxygen K-edge NEXAFS spectra of submicrometer sodium halide droplets are reported along with a unique experimental observation of the formation of the halide--water anionic complex in NaBr and NaI microdimensional droplets. The analytical approach provides a unique opportunity for spectromicroscopy studies of water uptake on environmental particles collected in both laboratory and field studies. 10.1021/ac101797k

The effect of annealing on the local coordination of Fe in a series of vitrified industrial wastes is analyzed by using x-ray fluorescence mapping and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopies. The depletion of Fe from the glass, which has led to the formation of Fe-rich crystalline regions, has resulted in the weakening of the vitreous matrix in which Pb is entrapped.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used to study the annealing process of UV-ozone oxide on GaAs for the formation of gold nanoparticle. The UV-ozone oxide layer is found to contain [As.sub.2][O.sub.3] as dominant oxide, while the oxide layer becomes rich in [Ga.sub.2][O.sub.3] when annealed at 500 degree Celsius for 300 s in dry nitrogen environment.

The role of proximity caps during the annealing of UV-ozone oxidized GaAs under different capping conditions is studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The surface deterioration of GaAs is found to be due to pit formation and the pits contain mainly elemental As and gallium oxide with As at the pit oxide interface.
