This article investigated the effects of airborne-particle abrasion and nanosilica (nano-Si) infiltration treatment on the surface characteristics of dental zirconia. A total of 15 unsintered zirconia ceramic green bodies (10 × 10 × 3 mm) were divided into three groups (n = 5): Group C, no treatment after sintering; Group S, airborne-particle abrasion with 50-µm aluminum oxide particles after sintering; and Group N, infiltration of nano-Si followed by sintering and hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching. The zirconia disks' surface roughness was analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surface morphology of the specimens was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the chemical composition was analyzed by energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX). Data were statistically analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test (P < .05). Zirconia surface treatments by infiltration of nano-Si, sintering, and HF etching showed multiple changes in the surface features. The surface roughness of Groups C, S, and N were 0.88 ± 0.07 µm, 1.26 ± 0.10 µm, and 1.69 ± 0.15 µm, respectively. The surface roughness of Group N was significantly higher than that of Groups C and S (P < .05). EDX analysis showed peaks that corresponded to silica (Si) after infiltration with colloidal Si that disappeared following acid etching. Infiltrating nano-Si increases the surface roughness of zirconia. The formation of retentive nanopores on the surface potentially improves the zirconia-resin cement bonding strengths. Energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and high-angle annular dark-field in a Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope are employed to characterize the atomic-scale strain distribution in the active region of the InAs-based interband cascade laser. For the first time, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy is utilized for the quantitative calculation of the zero-strain region, by which the geometric phase analysis of high-angle annular dark-field imaging has been carried out. The strain distribution of the active region with high accuracy has been obtained. The analysis of the out-of-plane strain shows that the active region in the InAs-based interband cascade laser is strain-compensated, while a certain degree of elemental intermixing still exists in the active region. This detailed strain distribution can provide valuable insights into the optimization of the growth conditions for the active region such as growth temperature, V/III flux ratio, and growth process to minimize the elemental intermixing and obtain a better performance interface while maintaining the strain-compensated state. High-entropy oxides (HEOs) are single phase solid solutions where five or more metals share the same sublattice, giving rise to unexpected features in various fields of applications. Recently, HEOs have emerged as an alternative conversion electrode anode material for next-generation Li-ion batteries, where the combination of several different elements in a single solid solution can synergistically act to overcome some of its main drawbacks, improving performance. Due to their chemical complexity, x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) emerges as an appropriate technique to study the electronic (x-ray absorption near edge structure, XANES) and local structure (extended x-ray absorption fine structure, EXAFS) of these compounds as a function of cycling. This work aims to highlight the capabilities of XAS as an element-specific probe to understand a material's structure at the atomistic level through EXAFS modeling of (MgFeCoNiCuZn)O high-entropy system and how to extract valuable information about the bond distance, number of near neighbors, and local disorder, which are crucial to a full understanding of the electrochemical reaction mechanisms of such battery electrodes. Magnetic nanometric skyrmions are small complex vortex-like topological defects, mainly found in non-centrosymmetric crystals such as MnSi. They have potential applications for future spintronic devices. In this article, the structural, electronic, and magnetic states of the Mn atoms in a polycrystalline MnSi thin film facing a c-sapphire substrate were studied using x-ray diffraction, x-ray photo-emission spectroscopy, resonance photoemission spectroscopy (RPES), and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). The valence band spectra indicate the metallic nature of the film. The RPES study reveals the presence of major itinerant Mn 3d states near EF and also the mixed Mn 3d and Si 3s–3p states from 5.3 to 11.3 eV. The EXAFS spectrum does not show the existence of oxygen vacancies in the system, and the obtained magnetic moment in the non-stoichiometric MnSi thin film is a combination of the partially itinerant and partially localized Mn 3d states. The present study focuses on the oxygen (O)-ion implantation-induced structural and electronic modifications in the single crystals of strontium-titanate (s-STO) using synchrotron-based x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and resonant x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The crystallinity of the epitaxially aligned phases of s-STO is confirmed through XRD. This direct evidence of heavy ion implantation is supported by the Monte Carlo-based simulation of stopping and range of ions in matter/transport of ions in matter. XPS at different core levels is performed to detect the exact oxidation state of Ti ions in s-STO. The dominance of Ti3+ over Ti4+ upon oxygen implantation suggests the disorder in the perovskite material, primarily in the form of oxygen vacancies (VO). The confirmation of VO is explicitly shown by the enhancement in the spectral area of the assigned peak in the O 1s XPS. Resonant photoemission spectroscopy measurements were performed by varying photon energy from 32 to 46 eV to understand the nature of the valence band electronic structure of s-STO. The resonance in the different hybridized states of s-STO is confirmed by the spectral features of constant initial state plots. There is a correlation between the defective state of Ti and the oxygen-deficient state. The transformation from SrTiO3 to SrTiO2.5, partially or completely, is essentially required to underline any modification in the electronic properties of s-STO. s-STO is in a mixed state of an ionic conductor and an electronic conductor. A nitrogen K-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) survey is presented for tetrapyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c:3″,2″-h:2‴,3‴-j]phenazine (tpphz)-bridged bimetallic assemblies that couple chromophore and catalyst transition metal complexes for light driven catalysis, as well as their individual molecular constituents. We demonstrate the high N site sensitivity of the N pre-edge XANES features, which are energetically well-separated for the phenazine bridge N atoms and for the individual metal-bound N atoms of the inner coordination sphere ligands. By comparison with the time-dependent density functional theory calculated spectra, we determine the origins of these distinguishable spectral features. We find that metal coordination generates large shifts toward higher energy for the metal-bound N atoms, with increasing shift for 3d < 4d < 5d metal bonding. This is attributed to increasing ligand-to-metal σ donation that increases the effective charge of the bound N atoms and stabilizes the N 1s core electrons. In contrast, the phenazine bridge N pre-edge peak is found at a lower energy due to stabilization of the low energy electron accepting orbital localized on the phenazine motif. While no sensitivity to ground state electronic coupling between the individual molecular subunits was observed, the spectra are sensitive to structural distortions of the tpphz bridge. These results demonstrate N K-edge XANES as a local probe of electronic structure in large bridging ligand motifs, able to distinctly investigate the ligand-centered orbitals involved in metal-to-ligand and ligand-to-ligand electron transfer following light absorption. The position of the valence band maximum (VBM) shifts even in a vacuum of 10−10 Torr. We find this to be due to CO adsorption causing unintentional electron doping. The time evolution of the position of VBM is exponential, and it reaches two different saturation points, depending on whether the sample is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation or not. Our XPS (x-ray photoemission spectroscopy) study shows no time-dependent escape of sulfur, which was in a previous study attributed to a VBM shift. The VBM shift can be reversed by annealing, sputtering, and UV light, which desorb CO gases. The study shows that the MoS2 surface is easily doped, which offers the possibility of using it as a sensor but in many other applications could diminish device performance and needs to be considered. In this study, we developed a microwave chemical cell for total electron yield soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) using synchrotron radiation under microwave irradiation. In addition, in situ XAS measurements of ammonia borane were performed using the device developed. The device comprises a post-wall waveguide housing a sample holder formed within it. Electrons emitted from the sample during soft x-ray irradiation pass through the metal plates of the waveguide and are measured using a picoammeter. Integration of the microwave irradiation structure into a synchrotron radiation beamline, which is a challenge in soft x-ray analysis requiring measurements in a high-vacuum atmosphere, was achieved by miniaturizing the device using 24.125 GHz ISM band microwaves, instead of the typical 2.45 GHz microwaves. Performance of the device was thoroughly assessed through temperature distribution simulation, temperature measurement of water, and evaluation of frequency characteristics. When the sample holder was filled with water and irradiated with 3 W microwaves, the temperature increased to 97 °C, which is close to the boiling point. The in situ XAS measurements performed using this device with ammonia borane/graphite (2:1) powder at the B-K edge during microwave irradiation showed that peaks associated with hydrogen desorption intensified with prolonged microwave exposure. This result indicates that microwave heating in a vacuum and soft x-ray analysis during microwave heating were achieved. The developed microwave chemical cell emerges as a powerful tool, facilitating advancements in our understanding of elementary chemical processes and elucidating microwave-specific effects such as local heating during microwave irradiation. Silicene, a 2D hexagonal structure of silicon, has shown great promise for next-generation advanced electronic devices due to recent progress. However, one major obstacle to its application and integration into devices is its strong tendency of rapid oxidation in an ambient environment. Enhancing the chemical inertness by means of chemical modification without comprising its unique structure and properties is vital. Here, we report the fabrication of hydrogenated silicene grown on polycrystalline Ag films by means of plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition (PECVD) with proper hydrogen dilution. Our Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction results show the existence of typical monolayer and few-layer silicene. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrates its oxidation resistance after a few minutes of air exposure in a class 100 clean room. We propose that PECVD silicene can be an alternative to molecular-beam-epitaxy silicene for potential low-cost and large-area silicene applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful experimental tool to probe the local structure in materials with the core hole excitations. Here, the oxygen K-edge XAS spectra of the NaCl solution and pure water are computed by using a recently developed GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, based on configurations modeled by path-integral molecular dynamics with the deep-learning technique. The neural network is trained on ab initio data obtained with strongly constrained and appropriately normed density functional theory. The observed changes in the XAS features of the NaCl solution, compared to those of pure water, are in good agreement between experimental and theoretical results. We provided detailed explanations for these spectral changes that occur when NaCl is solvated in pure water. Specifically, the presence of solvating ion pairs leads to localization of electron-hole excitons. Our theoretical XAS results support the theory that the effects of the solvating ions on the H-bond network are mainly confined within the first hydration shell of ions, however beyond the shell the arrangement of water molecules remains to be comparable to that observed in pure water. The study aimed to develop a potential biomaterial for neuroregeneration by the electrospinning of the biocompatible polymer polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with innovative functionalized boron nitride quantum dots (F-BNQDs) synthesized via green chemistry using the amino acid taurine as a functionalization. The F-BNQDs were characterized and were found to be 16-21 nm in diameter, showed good photoluminescent characteristics, and their elemental composition was confirmed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and ultraviolet spectroscopy. The PVDF with F-BNQDs was prepared at three different concentrations, and the resulting electrospun fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, thermogravimetric analysis, contact angle, biodegradation, water uptake, Schwann cell cytotoxicity, and cell behavior studies. The results of the study showed that the addition of F-BNQDs to PVDF resulted in enhanced mechanical properties, decreased contact angle, increased degradability, and water uptake. The lactate dehydrogenase assay revealed that 5% BN-PVDF had the lowest cytotoxicity. Fluroscent 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining showed that the increase in F-BNQD concentration up to 5% BN-PVDF enhanced cell behavior on the electrospun fibers. Therefore, the study concluded that 5% BN-PVDF would be suitable for further testing as a potential biomaterial for neuroregeneration in vivo. Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of cleaning protocols for the decontamination of organic compounds from polished zirconium oxide samples. Materials and Methods: A total of 24 rectangular plate specimens were sintered from zirconium oxide. All samples were polished with commercially available polishers (coarse, fine, and superfine) and polishing paste. During the first step of the protocol, all specimens were cleaned with steam. Samples were then randomly assigned to one of three groups (n = 8 each): A, B, or C. In group A, no additional cleaning was performed, while specimens in group B underwent ultrasonic cleaning in distilled water. Group C specimens were cleaned in an ultrasonic bath with a special detergent solution. After washing, samples were subjected to energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination. In order to detect organic materials, the level of carbon atoms was measured. Results: EDX analysis revealed that samples in group A had the highest percent of carbon atoms (9.57 ± 3.67) on the surface compared to other cleaning protocols. Following the Group B cleaning protocol resulted in lower carbon levels (4.73 ± 3.56), but this difference was not significant compared to group A (P = .439). None of the specimens in group C had detectable carbon atoms (0), which implies that all wax molecules were removed (P < .05). Conclusion: Total decontamination of organic compounds from a polished zirconium surface can be expected only following the C cleaning protocol; therefore, it is advised to employ an ultrasonic bath with detergent solution for cleaning procedures of zirconium abutments before delivery. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of ultraviolet-C light (UVC) photofunctionalization treatment time on the biologic activity of airborne particle-abraded and acid-etched (SLA) titanium surfaces and to analyze its physical and chemical mechanisms. Materials and Methods: SLA titanium was treated with UVC light for different lengths of time (10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, and 24 hours), and then changes to its surface characteristics were evaluated via electron microscope scanning, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angle measurement, and zeta potential measurement. The effect of UVC photofunctionalization on the biologic processes of SLA titanium surfaces was assessed by analyzing the bovine serum albumin adsorption, adhesion, proliferation, morphology, and alkaline phosphatase activity of MG-63 cells. Results: UVC irradiation did not change the topography of SLA titanium surfaces. As treatment times increased, the water contact angle decreased from 120 degrees to 0 degrees, and the hydrocarbon content decreased. Zeta potential testing showed increased surface potential of photofunctionalized titanium. In vitro testing showed that cell adhesion, proliferation, morphology, and alkaline phosphate (ALP) activity on titanium surfaces were significantly improved by UVC photofunctionalization. Conclusions: UVC photofunctionalization can improve the biologic activity of SLA titanium surfaces by removing hydrocarbons and increasing the surface potential of titanium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A CuII complex (1) of a bis-pyridine-dioxime ligand and its one-electron oxidized analog (1-ox) were thoroughly characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy. 1-ox was found to be a CuII complex of a ligand iminoxyl radical and represents the first example of such a type. Acetal substitution reactions can proceed by a number of mechanisms, but oxocarbenium ion intermediates are involved in many of these reactions. Our research has focused on understanding the conformational preferences, structures, and reactions of these intermediates. This study investigates the physical characteristics of un- and Mn-doped SnS nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized through a co-precipitation method. The undoped SnS is referred to as Mn 0, while Mn 1, Mn 2, and Mn 3 samples are obtained by incorporating 1, 3, and 6 mL of Mn-dopant solution, respectively. Elemental analysis is done by means of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), confirming successful Mn incorporation into the SnS lattice. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies validate the formation of the SnS phase with a preferred orientation at the (040) plane for all samples. The crystallite size (D) of SnS NPs initially increases and then decreases after Mn-doping, confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images exhibit grain-shaped morphology with sizes ranging from 23 to 36 nm for all samples. The reduction in bandgap energy (E g) upon Mn-doping is attributed to variations in grain size and the formation of impurity levels within the SnS band gap. Mott-Schottky analysis showed p -type conductivity for all samples. The semiconductor parameters of SnS, such as the acceptor concentration (N A) and the density of states (N V), improved after Mn-doping. Current-voltage (I – V) curves revealed that the conductivity and mobility of SnS after Mn-doping initially declined for Mn 1 and Mn 2 samples and then improved for the Mn 3 sample. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results align with the I – V findings. Consequently, it can be concluded that Mn-doping leads to enhancements in optoelectronic properties of SnS. Spraying Bentonite NanoClay as an innovative idea satisfied an urgent need for conservation of historical brick constructions. This research explores the application of Nanotechnology as a Nano-Geotechnics (NaG) and Nano Ground Improvement (NGI) techniques for fortifying the mortar between bricks in historical buildings against some environmental erosive factors. Bentonite Nanoparticles were selected because of their compatibility with mortar. They were applied via Nano Spray to mitigate holes and cracks caused by erosion. Various percentages of bentonite NanoClay (2–10%) Spray and the number of times to spray on the mortar were evaluated. Validation through field emission scanning electron microscopy imaging (FESEM/SEM), X-Ray differaction and Fluorescence analyses (XRD/XRF), Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), porosity tests, water absorption time measurement, and weathering tests confirmed the efficacy and long-term stability of this method. The result indicated that double spraying of a 2% NanoClay solution proved most effective in reducing porosity, declining water absorption, and enhancing resistance to freezing and rain. The bandgap is a fundamental property inherent to semiconductor materials such as silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge), determining their electronic and optical properties. Furthermore, combining Si and Ge allows for the potential to manipulate the optical and electronic properties of mixed materials. Various synthetic methods for Si/Ge nanoparticles (NPs) have been investigated, and there is a need to develop a simpler method for Si/Ge NP synthesis. We present a modified one-pot synthesis method to fabricate n-butyl Si/Ge NPs using a streamlined, room-temperature process that excludes surfactants. Ge–Ge, Ge–Si, and Si–Si optical phonons were exhibited by n-butyl-Si/Ge NPs at 285, 400, and 485cm−1, respectively, in Raman analysis. The Si-to-Ge ratios of the n-butyl-Si/Ge NPs ranged from 0.40:0.60 to 0.47:0.53 according to high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis. The PL spectrum (λem = 445nm) of n-butyl-Si/Ge NPs closely resembled those of Ge NPs (λem = 438nm); this result is discussed in relation to those obtained from reported theoretical calculations. The solubility/degradability of bioactive glasses play crucial role in bone tissue engineering applications owing to the release of ions from their structure, which exert therapeutic effects on tissues. The present study evaluates the findings of a detailed investigation on the main features and solubility behaviors of newly formulated Nb incorporated glasses (Nb-BGs). New glass formulation in SiO 2 –CaO–Na 2 O–P 2 O 5 –CaF 2 –SrO–xNb 2 O 5 (x: 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mol. %) system was successfully synthesized by melt-quenching technique. Glass composition was verified with Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence spectrometer analysis and its amorphous nature, functional groups of the matrix and morphological features were identified via X-Ray diffraction analyses, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope analysis, respectively. Network connectivity (NC) of the Nb-BGs was assessed with respect to the role of Nb 2 O 5 in the glass matrix as network former, modifier, or both. In order to evaluate the in vitro solubility of Nb-BGs, released concentrations of particular ions from the glass compositions were determined at certain time points and comprehensively discussed with several mathematical models such as zero-order, first-order, second-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer-Peppas for the first time. Results showed that the incorporation of Nb 2 O 5 (up to 1.5 mol. %) increased the density, oxygen density as well as NC values of newly formulated glasses. Si, Na and Ca ions which play a main role in well-defined Hench's mechanism followed mostly second-order release kinetics for all glasses in the mathematical models studied. When the Nb content increase (to 1.5 mol. %) in glass composition, the release mechanism of Si ion according to Korsmeyer-Peppas model shifts from the diffusion mechanism to an erosion-dominant release mechanism. Background: White spot lesions are a widespread undesirable effect, especially prevalent during fixed orthodontic treatments. The study compared the in vitro enamel remineralization potential of undemineralized dentin matrix (UDD) versus chicken eggshell powder (CESP) for artificially induced enamel lesions. Methods: 100 caries-free and sound maxillary premolars were randomly divided into four groups each contain 25 teeth: Group I (Baseline): No treatment was done to the enamel surface. Group II (Negative control): The enamel surface of the teeth underwent demineralization using demineralizing solution to create artificial carious lesions then kept in artificial saliva. Group III (CESP treated): After demineralizing the tooth surface, the teeth have been suspended in the CESP remineralizing solution. Group IV (UDD treated): After enamel demineralization, the teeth were suspended in UDD remineralizing solution. The remineralization potential was assessed by Vickers microhardness testing, scanning electron microscopic examination (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Results: The current study demonstrated an increase in the mean microhardness of CESP and UDD-treated groups; however, It was nearer to the baseline level in the UDD group. SEM imaging revealed greater enamel remineralization in the UDD group compared to the remaining groups. The UDD group disclosed complete coverage for the prismatic enamel compared to the CESP group, which revealed a partially remineralized enamel surface. Interestingly, the Ca/P ratio increased significantly in the CESP group compared to the negative control group. In contrast, a higher significant increase in the mean Ca/P ratios was recorded in the UDD group compared to the test groups. Chemical Short-Range Order (CSRO) has attracted recent attention from many researchers, creating intense debates about its impact on material properties. The challenges lie in confirming and quantifying CSRO, as its detection proves exceptionally demanding, contributing to conflicting data in the literature regarding its true effects on mechanical properties. Our work uses high-precision calorimetric data to unambiguously prove the existence and, coupled with atomistic simulations, quantify the type of CSRO. This methodology allows us to propose a mechanism for its formation and destruction based on the heat evolution during thermal analysis and facilitates a precise identification of local ordering in CoCrNi alloys. Samples of CoCrNi (Co33Cr33Ni33) and CrNi2 (Cr33Ni66) alloys are fabricated in varying ordered states, extensively characterized via synchrotron X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Samples with considerably different ordered states are submitted to tensile tests with in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We demonstrate, despite inducing varied CSRO levels in CoCrNi, no significant alterations in overall mechanical behavior emerge. However, the CrNi2 alloy, which undergoes long-range ordering, experiences significant shifts in yield strength, ultimate tensile stress and ductility. Glutinous rice mortar is a traditional lime-based building material which was first used in China during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279 CE) according to ancient Chinese documents. The Tieguai Tomb, dating back to the late Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 CE) in Nanling, Southern China, was built by using mortar for its tomb chamber, making it the earliest mortar tomb found in China to date. In this study, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thin-section petrography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and starch grain analyses were conducted to comprehensively investigate the manufacturing techniques of the mortar from the Tieguai tomb. The results show that the mortar is a type of organic–inorganic mixed material made of glutinous rice pulp, lime, clay, and fine sand. This finding indicates that glutinous rice mortar had already been used as a building material as early as the late Northern Song Dynasty, which is the earliest use record for this material in China. This study also provides direct scientific evidence for exploring the origin of glutinous rice mortar and is of great importance for reconstructing the history of Chinese traditional building materials and architectural techniques. An improvement in the reliability and comparability of tissue characterization results is crucial for enabling further progress in cancer detection and the assessment of therapeutic effects. This can only be achieved by integrating quantitative methods into well-established qualitative characterization routines. This case study presents a hybrid metrological approach for tissue characterisation including vibrational Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopy and traceable reference-free X-Ray Fluorescence analysis (XRF). Through the combination of spatially resolved qualitative molecular information with quantitative elemental concentrations an all-encompassing sample characterisation can be provided. The study was performed on tissue sections of syngeneic murine pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma KPC (KrasG12D/+; Trp53R172H/+; Pdx-1-Cre) tumours ex-vivo. Sections from healthy pancreatic tissues, sham-exposed tumours and tumours subjected to low dose radiotherapy treatment (2 Gray and 6 Gray) were analysed using both methods. Additional sample integrity studies using Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy at the carbon and nitrogen K-edges were performed to assess the effect of sample aging and XRF investigations on the samples. Results showed an increase in the concentrations of elemental biomarkers, including S, K and amide I structures in malignant pancreatic tissue compared to healthy pancreatic tissue. The exposure of tumours to 6 Gy radiation decreases the levels of these elements towards a phenotype seen in the healthy pancreas. A protocol for hybrid investigations is presented, with emphasis on the sample preparation, minimizing the impact of consecutive applied methods on their measurands, and ensuring the compatibility and reliability of achieved results. The study demonstrates the cancer recognition capabilities, and the sensitivity for low dosage radiotherapy treatment monitoring for each method individually and assesses the potential of combining molecular fingerprinting with non-destructive quantitative elemental information for tissue sample characterization. This study presents the successful synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) via a simple one-pot method, followed by pyrolysis at 1000 °C to be used in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). A study utilizing various techniques, including field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), investigated the properties of NiCo-MOF and its individual components before and after pyrolysis. The pristine MOFs exhibited limited electrochemical stability for both ORR and OER, while the pyrolyzed MOFs demonstrated a significant enhancement and excellent long-term stability in OER and ORR performance in alkaline media. Notably, the OER performance rivaled that of the benchmark IrO 2 electrocatalyst, with similar onset potentials (1.48 V for IrO 2 , 1.52 V, 1.56 V, and 1.59 V for pyrolyzed NiCo-MOF, Co-MOF, and Ni-MOF, respectively). Furthermore, the pyrolyzed MOF catalysts displayed promising ORR activity in a 0.1 M KOH solution under O 2 saturation, as evidenced by their onset potentials (around 0.615 V, 0.63 V, and 0.7 V vs. RHE) and favorable Tafel slopes (53, 84, and 154 mV dec⁻1, for graphitizated Ni-MOF, Co-MOF, and NiCo-MOF, respectively). These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of pyrolysis in engineering the MOF crystal structure for enhanced catalytic performance. This paves the way for further exploration of this synthesis method for the design of structurally optimized catalysts and applicable to a broad spectrum of energy technologies. Homogeneous mixed-valence (MV) behaviour is one of the most intriguing phenomena of f-electron systems. Despite extensive efforts, a fundamental aspect which remains unsettled is the experimental determination of the limiting cases for which MV emerges. Here we address this question for SmB6, a prototypical MV system characterized by two nearly-degenerate Sm2+ and Sm3+ configurations. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), we track the evolution of the mean Sm valence, vSm, in the SmxLa1−xB6 series. Upon substitution of Sm ions with trivalent La, we observe a linear decrease of valence fluctuations to an almost complete suppression at x = 0.2, with vSm ~ 2; surprisingly, by further reducing x, a re-entrant increase of vSm develops, approaching the value of vimp ~ 2.35 in the dilute-impurity limit. Such behaviour departs from a monotonic evolution of vSm across the whole series, as well as from the expectation of its convergence to an integer value for x → 0. Our ARPES and XAS results, complemented by a phenomenological model, demonstrate an unconventional evolution of the MV character in the SmxLa1−xB6 series, paving the way to further theoretical and experimental considerations on the concept of MV itself, and its influence on the macroscopic properties of rare-earth compounds in the dilute-to-intermediate impurity regime. This study reveals a non-monotonic evolution of the mixed-valence character in the SmxLa1−xB6 series, with near-complete suppression of valence fluctuations in the intermediate substitution regime, followed by a re-emergent mixed-valence behavior in the dilute-impurity limit. The process of stone formation in the human body remains incompletely understood, which requires clinical and laboratory studies and the formulation of a new endogenous, nanotechnological concept of the mechanism of origin and formation of crystallization centers. Previously, the mechanism of sialolithiasis was considered a congenital disease associated with the pathology of the ducts in the structure of the glands themselves. To date, such morphological changes of congenital nature can be considered from the position of the intrauterine formation of endogenous bacterial infections complicated by the migration of antigenic structures initiating the formation of crystallization centers. The present work is devoted to the study of the morphology and composition of stones obtained as a result of surgical interventions for sialolithiasis. Presumably, nanoparticles of metals and other chemical compounds can be structural components of crystallization centers or incorporated into the conditions of chronic endogenous inflammation and the composition of antigenic structures, in complexes with protein and bacterial components. X-ray microtomography, X-ray fluorescence analysis, scanning transmission electron microscopy and microanalysis, mass spectrometry, and Raman spectroscopy were used to study the pathogenesis of stone formation. Immunoglobulins (Igs) of classes A and G, as well as nanoparticles of metals Pb, Fe, Cr, and Mo, were found in the internal structure of the stones. The complex of antigenic structures was an ovoid calcified layered matrix of polyvid microbial biofilms, with the inclusion of metal nanoparticles and chemical elements, as well as immunoglobulins. The obtained results of clinical and laboratory studies allow us to broaden the view on the pathogenesis of stone formation and suggest that the occurrence of the calcification of antigenic structures may be associated with the formation of IgG4-associated disease. The most frequently used sulfonamide is sulfamethazine (SMZ) because it is often found in foods made from livestock, which is hazardous for individuals. Here, we have developed an easy, quick, selective, and sensitive analytical technique to efficiently detect SMZ. Recently, transition metal oxides have attracted many researchers for their excellent performance as a promising sensor for SMZ analysis because of their superior redox activity, electrocatalytic activity, electroactive sites, and electron transfer properties. Further, Cu-based oxides have a resilient electrical conductivity; however, to boost it to an extreme extent, a composite including two-dimensional (2D) graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets needs to be constructed and ready as a composite (denoted as g-C3N4/Cu2Y2O5). Moreover, several techniques, including X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were employed to analyze the composites. The electrochemical measurements have revealed that the constructed g-C3N4/Cu2Y2O5 composites exhibit great electrochemical activity. Nevertheless, the sensor achieved outstanding repeatability and reproducibility alongside a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.23 µM, a long linear range of 2 to 276 µM, and an electrode sensitivity of 8.86 µA µM−1 cm−2. Finally, the proposed GCE/g-C3N4/Cu2Y2O5 electrode proved highly effective for detection of SMZ in food samples, with acceptable recoveries. In the 19th century, the weighting of silk with metal salts, such as tin, was a common practice to enhance certain properties of silk fabrics and compensate for the weight loss incurred during the degumming process. This technique induces both physical and chemical modifications to the fibres, contributing to their long-term degradation, which requires thorough investigation. This study aims to examine the structural changes in silk fibres caused by the accumulation of metal salts from the tin-weighting process, using mock-up samples prepared through successive loading with weighting agents using a traditional tin-phosphate treatment method. Unweighted and tin-weighted silk samples were compared using scanning electron (SEM) micrographs, which presented the dispersed nanoparticles on the fibres, while through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) elemental mapping, the presence and uniform distribution of the weighting agents were confirmed. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis revealed structural changes in tin-weighted silk samples compared to untreated ones, including shifts in amide bands, altered water/hydroxyl and skeletal stretching regions, and increased skeletal band intensities suggesting modifications in hydrogen bonding, β-sheet content, and structural disorder without significantly impacting the overall crystallinity index. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of both pristine and tin-weighted silk samples revealed significant alterations, predominantly in the amorphous regions of the silk upon weighting. These structural changes were further examined using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS), which provided detailed insights into modifications occurring at the nanometre scale. The analyses suggested disruptions in β-sheet crystals and intermolecular packing, especially in the amorphous regions, with increasing amounts of tin-weighting. Contact angle analysis (CA) revealed that the tin-phosphate-weighting process significantly impacted silk surface properties, transforming it from moderately hydrophobic to highly hydrophilic. These changes indicate that the incorporation of tin-phosphate nanoparticles on and within silk fibres could restrict the flexibility of polymer chains, impacting the physical properties and potentially the degradation behaviour of silk textiles. By studying these structural changes, we aim to deepen our understanding of how tin-weighting impacts silk fibre structure, contributing valuable insights into the longevity, conservation, and preservation strategies of silk textiles in the context of cultural heritage. Summary: This article deals with a special group of vessels from the Early to Middle Bronze Age fortified hilltop settlement of Monkodonja near Rovinj on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula in Croatia, namely miniature vessels. The miniature vessels from Monkodonja can be divided into different groups of types: coarse thimble- or bowl-shaped objects, carefully crafted imitations of large vessels and various forms of very small, miniaturized vessels such as jugs, beakers and kantharoi. Analyses using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on white crusts discovered inside fragments of small drinking vessels suggest that the vessels once contained substances mixed with bone meal. With a view to archaeometric investigations on wall fragments with painting from Monkodonja as well as on residues from other Early and Middle Bronze Age and Aeneolithic miniature vessels, the various possible uses of the vessels are discussed. The synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones (DHPMs) was made by utilizing newly synthesized heterogeneous mixed ligand-based Ni-phen MCM-41 catalyst with variety of aryl aldehydes (viz. electron donating, electron withdrawing, fused, disubstituted and unsaturated substituents), ethylacetoacetate, urea and ethanol as a solvent by using two different energy sources: conventional and ultrasonication methods. The effectiveness of the two methods was compared and found that the formation of Biginelli products in ultrasonication method (65–92% yield at 60 °C, 45 min) is better than the conventional method (63–90% yield at 78 °C, 2 h) by yield, temperature and time of the reaction. The formation, heterogeneous nature and morphology of the catalyst have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherm (BET) techniques. Moreover, the catalyst was recoverable, reusable and very much efficient for three consecutive runs without any significant loss of its catalytic activity. In this paper, the design, synthesis and catalytic application of a magnetic covalent organic framework modified with sulfonic acid (Fe3O4@COF-SO3H) in the synthesis of 14-aryl-14H-dibenzo[a,j]xanthene derivatives, were studied. The structure of the prepared catalyst was confirmed by various techniques including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermo-gravimetric analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy, vibrating-sample magnetometer and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller porosimetry. The structure of the prepared derivatives was also confirmed using FT-IR and nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR and 13CNMR) spectroscopy. Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis (EDXRF) is an excellent method in investigations of cultural heritage treasures, including easel and wall paintings and illuminations in ancient manuscripts. As one of the few methods applicable for this purpose, it is non-destructive and non-invasive. It is often combined with other methods such as optical microscopy, visible light photography, UV fluorescence photography, infrared reflectography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray radiography, Raman spectrometry and others. The complex layered structure and mixtures of pigments, especially on easel paintings, represent a challenging task from the point of view of analysis. However, without taking samples it is only possible to analyse the thin surface layer of the investigated object with a thickness of tens to a few hundreds of micrometres. Nevertheless, this is not too much a problem when analysing paintings and even more so in the analysis of illuminations in manuscripts. The paper has an overview character and aims to summarise the possibilities, advantages and problems of XRF in this area and to demonstrate them on selected examples of published works, which in some cases are devoted to the works of leading painters from various historical periods (Giotto di Bondone, Antonello da Messina, Raffaelo Sanzio, Antonio Allegri da Corregio, Anthonis van Dyck, Rembrandt van Rijn, Giorgio Marini, Pablo Picasso and others). This paper reports on advanced instrumentation for high pressure research developed for the ESRF beamline ID12 which is dedicated to polarization-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy at photon energies from 2 to 15 keV. Emphasis is laid on X-ray optics, the design of diamond anvil cell adapted for tender X-ray range and compatible with low temperatures and with high magnetic field as well as a highly efficient X-ray fluorescence detection system. Several examples have been selected to illustrate the performance of the beamline and show what type of advanced spectroscopic techniques can be used to study the local electronic and magnetic properties of materials under pressure. We discuss the X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) methods elaborated using the high pressure and high-temperature autoclaves installed at FAME and FAME-UHD beamlines. These methods are based on the in situ acquisition of X-ray transmission and fluorescence spectra of hydrothermal fluids and silicate melts and enable the derivation of both solubility and speciation information about metal complexes. The technological assets of our autoclaves are described across a wide range of experimental conditions spanning from different types of hydrothermal fluids, from liquid-like to vapor-like densities having metal concentrations of <1–10,000 ppm, to magmatic fluid-melt systems at 1000°C. Scientific examples are presented to illustrate the use and the advantages of our spectroscopic 'micro-batch' reactors. Here we present the new experimental stations devoted to the studies of matter under extreme conditions at the X-ray absorption beamlines BM23 and ID24-DCM that were recently refurbished within the ESRF – Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS) upgrade program. In comparison with the stations before the EBS upgrade, they exhibit outstanding performances in terms of sample positioning capabilities, acceptance of multi-detection systems and complex sample environments. In addition, significant improvements regarding the photon flux and focusing capabilities down to the submicron size have been achieved. These stations are now coupled with the new ESRF double crystal monochromators that exhibit an exceptional beam position and energy stability and that permit quick micro-EXAFS measurements down to one EXAFS/second, and hyperspectral EXAFS mapping. In this contribution, we discuss the choices regarding the sample and detector stages and illustrate the potential of the new setups for extreme conditions studies based on selected preliminary results. This paper describes technical details and new scientific opportunities offered by the new High Power Laser Facility at the ESRF, opened to users since 2022. This facility enables laser-induced dynamic compression experiments probed by ultra-fast X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy at beamline ID24-ED. This capability allows to reach and probe more extreme pressure and temperature states and higher strain rates with respect to static compression, addressing open questions in fundamental, planetary and material science. [Display omitted] The simultaneous intercalation of protons and Zn2+ ions in aqueous electrolytes presents a significant obstacle to the widespread adoption of aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) for large-scale use, a challenge that has yet to be overcome. To address this, we have developed a MnO 2 /tetramethylammonium (TMA) superstructure with an enlarged interlayer spacing, designed specifically to control H+/Zn2+ co-intercalation in AZIBs. Within this superstructure, the pre-intercalated TMA+ ions work as spacers to stabilize the layered structure of MnO 2 cathodes and expand the interlayer spacing substantially by 28 % to 0.92 nm. Evidence from in operando pH measurements, in operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that the enlarged interlayer spacing facilitates the diffusion and intercalation of Zn2+ ions (which have a large ionic radius) into the MnO 2 cathodes. This spacing also helps suppress the competing H+ intercalation and the formation of detrimental Zn 4 (OH) 6 SO 4 ·5H 2 O, thereby enhancing the structural stability of MnO 2. Device scaling for future semiconductor technologies is driving the adoption of innovative methods for miniaturizing semiconductor chips. One promising approach that has garnered significant interest for sub-10 nm device scaling is area selective deposition (ASD). In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of ASD of silicon dioxide (SiO2) on –OH terminated surfaces (silicon oxide: SiOx) but not on –NH terminated surfaces (silicon nitride: SiNx) for 2D blanket, 2D patterned, and 3D stacks using a novel precursor: Orthrus. To achieve this, we optimized the SiOx and SiNx layers to enhance the –OH and –NH surface bonds, respectively. Using x-ray photo spectroscopy analysis, we showed that SiO2 selectively deposits on SiOx without any nucleation delay compared to SiNx. We have demonstrated the inherent selective deposition of approximately ∼4 nm on 2D patterned structures and ∼3.7 nm on 3D stacks by fine-tuning the atomic layer deposition process. This selective thickness is >250% compared to a previously shown selective SiO2 deposition process in the literature. Finally, we also showed that the step coverage of selective SiO2 growth in 3D stacks is ∼1. This Study is focused on suitability of industrial wastes in cement stabilized soil. The investigation is based on Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests. Experimental work is carried out to compare the UCS of cement stabilized soil specimens with different proportion of industrial wastes like Iron ore tailing, Quarry dust, Fly ash and Bagasse ash. The mix proportion is designed such that clay content is maintained at 10.5% for fine grained soil and density of 17.5 kN/m³. It is observed that the mix comprising industrial wastes and fiber have improved the mechanical properties compared to cement stabilized soil. Fiber addition has improved post peak behavior of soil specimen. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) microstructure images depict soil particle flocculation, leading to an increase in compressive strength and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) studies suggest the use of industrial wastes with natural soil helps in strengthening of soil cement stabilization, as well as to minimize the environmental pollution. This study aims to synthesize HAp from rabbitfish bones (Siganus sp.) using a sintering method at a temperature of 800–1000°C. The preparation of HAp powder was characterized using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to identify phases and functional groups. The results of XRF analysis showed that the synthesized HAp powder showed the presence of chemical compositions of CaO, P2O5, and trace elements of Sr. The particle size of HAp analyzed using SEM showed an average particle size in the range of 100–400 nm. In XRD analysis, the synthesized HAp showed changes in crystallinity with increasing sintering temperature. In addition, three prominent peaks, (211), (112), and (300), were observed in the sintered sample at 2θ, which were very similar to the pattern of pure HAp. The FTIR results of the synthesized HAp showed the presence of hydroxyl and phosphate vibration peaks, confirming the production of HAp. Next, exposure of apatite to high temperatures and prolonged heat treatment caused the removal of carbonate groups. Despite the widespread investigations on the M‐N‐C type single atom catalysts (SACs) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), an internal conflict between its intrinsic thermodynamically structural instability and apparent catalytic steadiness has long been ignored. Clearly unfolding this contradiction is necessary and meaningful for understanding the real structure‐property relation of SACs. Herein, by using the well‐designed pH‐dependent metal leaching experiments and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, an unconventional structure reconstruction of M‐N‐C catalyst during OER process was observed. Combining with density functional theory calculations, the initial Ni−N coordination is easily broken in the presence of adsorbed OH*, leading to favorable formation of Ni−O coordination. The formed Ni−O works stably as the real active center for OER catalysis in alkaline media but unstably in acid, which clearly explains the existing conflict. Unveiling the internal contradiction between structural instability and catalytic steadiness provides valuable insights for rational design of single atom OER catalysts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sulfur nanoparticles (SNPs) have been successfully synthesized by applying Vachelia nilotica seed extract as a bioactive aqueous material by a disproportionation reaction of sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate (Na2S2O3.5H2O) with a 10% hydrochloric acid (HCl) at room temperature. The synthesized SNPs were characterized by UV–Visible, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques. The usual size of SNPs was determined by an XRD study and calculated with the Debye–Scherrer formula. The SNPs are crystalline with a calculated average size of 45 nm. The SEM and TEM analyses revealed spherical shape and size around 55 nm of SNPs. The synthesized SNPs were screened for their antifungal activity against M. furfur species and for anticancer activities against (MCF-7, HepG2) cell lines. Non-exhaust emissions have become an increasingly important issue as their levels continue to rise and the health effects of particulate matter (PM) are more widely discussed. To address this issue, a vehicle demonstrator with integrated emission reduction of tires and brakes was developed as part of the Zero Emission Drive Unit Generation-1 (ZEDU-1) project. This novel concept includes the removal of tire road wear particles (TRWP) with a strong ventilation/filtering system and an enclosed multi-disk brake, making it a suitable tool for the investigation of non-exhaust emissions. Particle number (PN) and particle size distribution (PSD) measurements down to 2.5 nm were performed on a chassis dynamometer and on a test track. Due to the low background concentrations on the chassis dynamometer, it is possible to distinguish between tire and brake wear and to characterize even a small number of particle emissions. It could be shown that about 30 % less particles are emitted by the vehicle, when using the novel multi-disk brake instead of the conventional brake. The highest TRWP emissions were collected during acceleration and harsh braking. Characterization of the collected particles using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) revealed diverse particle shapes and differences between particles generated on the dynamometer and on a test track. Site selection and characterisation are key factors influencing the safe, stable disposal of spent nuclear fuel. Site selection can be based on geophysical surveys, and geophysical well logging is performed at the detailed survey stage. Typically, gamma – gamma density logging is conducted to continuously obtain in situ density information regarding the well depth. However, gamma – gamma density logging is often influenced by the geological characteristics of the site. The ratio of atomic number to atomic weight is required to convert the electron density obtained through density logging counts into bulk density. Because it is difficult to calculate these ratios for the entire depth, an equation based on water-filled limestone is typically used for conversion. Therefore, as the difference in the ratio of the atomic number and atomic weight increases relative to that of limestone, the difference between the converted bulk density and the actual bulk density increases. In this study, equations were derived for various mineral compositions and applied to the density logging results. Matrix density was analyzed using a pycnometer, and the ratio between the atomic number and weight was calculated according to X-ray fluorescence analysis results. This approach improved the accuracy of the density logging data and reduced density errors. The objective was to verify the performance of spectral techniques as well as validation models in the prediction of nitrogen, total organic carbon, and humic fractions under different cultivation conditions. Chemical analyses for the determination of nitrate, total nitrogen, total organic carbon, and the chemical fractionation of soil organic matter were performed, as well as spectral analyses by Vis-NIR-SWIR and X-ray fluorescence. The results of the spectroscopy were processed using RStudio v. 4.1.3, and PLSR and support vector machine learning algorithms were applied to validate the models. The Vis-NIR-SWIR and XRF spectroscopic techniques showed high performance and are indicated for the prediction of nitrogen, total organic carbon, and humic fractions in Ferralsols of medium sandy texture. However, it is important to highlight that each technique has its own characteristic mechanism of action: Vis-NIR-SWIR detects the element based on harmonic tones, while XRF is based on the atomic number of the element or elemental association. The increasing demand for effective bone regeneration materials drives the exploration of biomaterials with enhanced bioactivity and biocompatibility, such as zinc-substituted compounds. This study investigates the in vitro cellular interactions with nanostructured spheres composed of alginate/carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA), compared to zinc-substituted CHA (ZnCHA). This work aimed to compare the physicochemical properties and biological effects of ZnCHA and CHA on osteoblasts. ZnCHA was synthesized using a wet chemical method, followed by characterization through X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, total organic carbon analysis, Wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and BET surface area analysis to assess ion release and structural changes. Biological evaluation was conducted using cell viability, proliferation, and biomineralization assays on osteoblasts. Results showed successful incorporation of zinc and carbonate, leading to reduced crystallinity and increased surface area. Cell viability and proliferation assays indicated ZnCHA's cytocompatibility and enhanced osteoblastic activity, with increased mineralization nodules compared to CHA samples. The study concludes that ZnCHA composites are promising candidates for bone tissue engineering, demonstrating improved cytocompatibility and potential for further preclinical evaluations. A novel graphene-based composite, 5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine (MTA) covalently functionalized graphene oxide (GO-MTA), was rationally developed and used for the selective sorption of Ga3+ from aqueous solutions, showing a higher adsorption capacity (48.20 mg g−1) toward Ga3+ than In3+ (15.41 mg g−1) and Sc3+ (~0 mg g−1). The adsorption experiment's parameters, such as the contact time, temperature, initial Ga3+ concentration, solution pH, and desorption solvent, were investigated. Under optimized conditions, the GO-MTA composite displayed the highest adsorption capacity of 55.6 mg g−1 toward Ga3+. Moreover, a possible adsorption mechanism was proposed using various characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), elemental mapping analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Ga3+ adsorption with the GO-MTA composite could be better described by the linear pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.962), suggesting that the rate-limiting step may be chemical sorption or chemisorption through the sharing or exchange of electrons between the adsorbent and the adsorbate. Importantly, the calculated qe value (55.066 mg g−1) is closer to the experimental result (55.60 mg g−1). The well-fitted linear Langmuir isothermal model (R2 = 0.972~0.997) confirmed that an interfacial monolayer and cooperative adsorption occur on a heterogeneous surface. The results showed that the GO-MTA composite might be a potential adsorbent for the enrichment and/or separation of Ga3+ at low or ultra-low concentrations in aqueous solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
