Magnetic nanoparticles play a crucial role in different fields such as biomedicine or information and quantum technologies. These applications require nanoparticles with a single, well-defined energy minimum, free of metastable states, and characterized by narrow switching field distributions. Here, we demonstrate that high-transition-temperature nanoSQUIDs can be successfully applied to the characterization of individual nanodiscs hosting magnetic vortices. We present measurements performed under varying temperature and external magnetic field, revealing signatures of ubiquitous, multiple metastable configurations. We also demonstrate that metastability can be reduced by introducing an intended asymmetry. NanoSQUID measurements can be applied to optimize the fabrication of on-demand spin-texture states, such as degenerated vortices or particles with fixed circulation and deterministic and narrow switching probabilities.

The mechanical performance and microstructures of a CoCrNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA) and NCoCrNi, alloyed with 0.5at% N, after high pressure torsion (HPT) and subsequent annealing treatments in a temperature range of 150-1000 {\deg}C were investigated. The introduction of N results in a reduction of grain size by 40% and ~10-15% increased hardness and bending strength after HPT. Both materials showed strain hardening and plasticity after HPT even at these strength levels over 1500 MPa which is induced by the saturated nanocrystalline state. Annealing at intermediate temperatures of 300-500 {\deg}C resulted in an additional increase of hardness and strength by ~20-40%, compared to the HPT deformed state. This effect was ~10 % more pronounced in the nitrogen alloyed CoCrNi that also showed better thermal stability. Feature grid Scene Representation Networks (SRNs) have been applied to scientific data as compact functional surrogates for analysis and visualization. As SRNs are black-box lossy data representations, assessing the prediction quality is critical for scientific visualization applications to ensure that scientists can trust the information being visualized. Currently, existing architectures do not support inference time reconstruction quality assessment, as coordinate-level errors cannot be evaluated in the absence of ground truth data. We propose a parameter-efficient multi-decoder SRN (MDSRN) ensemble architecture consisting of a shared feature grid with multiple lightweight multi-layer perceptron decoders. MDSRN can generate a set of plausible predictions for a given input coordinate to compute the mean as the prediction of the multi-decoder ensemble and the variance as a confidence score. The coordinate-level variance can be rendered along with the data to inform the reconstruction quality, or be integrated into uncertainty-aware volume visualization algorithms. To prevent the misalignment between the quantified variance and the prediction quality, we propose a novel variance regularization loss for ensemble learning that promotes the Regularized multi-decoder SRN (RMDSRN) to obtain a more reliable variance that correlates closely to the true model error. We comprehensively evaluate the quality of variance quantification and data reconstruction of Monte Carlo Dropout, Mean Field Variational Inference, Deep Ensemble, and Predicting Variance compared to the proposed MDSRN and RMDSRN across diverse scalar field datasets. We demonstrate that RMDSRN attains the most accurate data reconstruction and competitive variance-error correlation among uncertain SRNs under the same neural network parameter budgets., Comment: To be published in Proc. We present a way to We present a way to fabricate bicrystal Josephson junctions of high-Tc cuprate superconductors that does not require bulk bicrystalline substrates. Based on vector substrate technology, this novel approach makes use of a few tens-of-nanometers-thick bicrystalline membranes transferred onto conventional substrates.We demonstrate 24{\deg} YBa2Cu3O7-x Josephson junctions fabricated on sapphire single crystals by utilizing 10-nm-thick bicrystalline membranes of SrTiO3. This technique allows one to manufacture bicrystalline Josephson junctions of high-Tc superconductors on a large variety of bulk substrate materials, providing novel degrees of freedom in designing the junctions and their electronic properties. It furthermore offers the capability to replace the fabrication of bulk bicrystalline substrates with thin-film growth methods

Controlled engineering of vortex pinning sites in copper-oxide superconductors is a critical issue in manufacturing devices based on magnetic flux quanta. To address this, we employed a focused He-ion beam (He-FIB) to irradiate thin YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ films and create ultradense hexagonal arrays of defects with lattice spacings as small as 20 nm. Critical current and magnetoresistance measurements demonstrate efficient pinning by an unprecedentedly high matching field of 6 T visible in a huge temperature range from the critical temperature $T_c$ down to 2 K. These results show that He-FIB irradiation provides excellent opportunities for the development and application of superconducting fluxonic devices based on Abrikosov vortices. In particular, our findings suggest that such devices can operate at temperatures far below $T_c$, where superconductivity is robust., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

The ferromagnetic {\alpha}-MnBi phase as non-rare earth magnetic material has gained increasing interest, but fabrication of large volumes containing a significant amount of {\alpha}-MnBi is still challenging. Targeting successful processing strategies, we apply multistep severe plastic deformation with intermediate magnetic field assisted annealing. The subsequent severe plastic deformation renewed the high amount of material defects and lead to microstructural refinement of the previously formed {\alpha}-MnBi phase. Thus, {\alpha}-MnBi phase content is enhanced during final annealing. Secondly, the magnetic coercivity increases. These results suggest that further optimization will pave the way towards non-rare-earth bulk magnetic materials with enhanced {\alpha}-MnBi phase content.

We carry out three dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations to study the role of gravitational and drag forces on the concentration of large dust grains (St > 1) in the spiral arms of gravitationally unstable protoplanetary discs, and the resulting implications for planet formation. We find that both drag and gravity play an important role in the evolution of large dust grains. If we include both, grains that would otherwise be partially decoupled will become well coupled and trace the spirals. For the dust grains most influenced by drag (with Stokes numbers near unity), the dust disc quickly becomes gravitationally unstable and rapidly forms clumps with masses between 0.15 - 6 Earth masses. A large fraction of clumps are below the threshold where runaway gas accretion can occur. However, if dust self-gravity is neglected, the dust is unable to form clumps, despite still becoming trapped in the gas spirals. When large dust grains are unable to feel either gas gravity or drag, the dust is unable to trace the gas spirals. Hence, full physics is needed to properly simulate dust in gravitationally unstable discs. Dust trapping of large grains in spiral arms of discs stable to gas fragmentation could explain planet formation in very young discs by a population of planetesimals formed due to the combined roles of drag and gravity in the earliest stages of a disc's evolution. Furthermore, it highlights that gravitationally unstable discs are not just important for forming gas giants quickly, it can also rapidly form Earth mass bodies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. What is the numerical reproducibility of a stellar system (including its discs) when evolving only a sub-set of (partially-evolved) smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) particles? To investigate this, we modelled the evolution of 29 star forming clumps that were extracted from our previous simulations that investigated the formation and early evolution of low-mass star clusters. These clumps were evolved using a three-dimensional smoothed particle radiation magnetohydrodynamics code, where we included or excluded non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics to match the cluster simulation. While star formation proceeded as expected, we were unable to identically reproduce any of the systems present at the end of the cluster simulations. However, the final distributions of stellar mass, stellar system mass, disc mass, and disc radii were reproduced statistically; unfortunately, the distribution of average magnetic field strengths in the discs was not reproduced statistically, but this may be a result of our updated algorithms governing the evolution of the magnetic field. Therefore, given that our clumps yield stellar masses that are statistically similar to those in the original low-mass star clusters, we have demonstrated that we can statistically reproduce systems (aside from their magnetic field strength) by evolving a subset of SPH particles. Therefore, clumps such as these can be used as initial conditions to investigate the formation of isolated stars from less-contrived initial environments., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Circle of Willis (CoW) is an important network of arteries connecting major circulations of the brain. Its vascular architecture is believed to affect the risk, severity, and clinical outcome of serious neuro-vascular diseases. However, characterizing the highly variable CoW anatomy is still a manual and time-consuming expert task. The CoW is usually imaged by two angiographic imaging modalities, magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and computed tomography angiography (CTA), but there exist limited public datasets with annotations on CoW anatomy, especially for CTA. Therefore we organized the TopCoW Challenge in 2023 with the release of an annotated CoW dataset. The TopCoW dataset was the first public dataset with voxel-level annotations for thirteen possible CoW vessel components, enabled by virtual-reality (VR) technology. It was also the first large dataset with paired MRA and CTA from the same patients. TopCoW challenge formalized the CoW characterization problem as a multiclass anatomical segmentation task with an emphasis on topological metrics. We invited submissions worldwide for the CoW segmentation task, which attracted over 140 registered participants from four continents. The top performing teams managed to segment many CoW components to Dice scores around 90%, but with lower scores for communicating arteries and rare variants. There were also topological mistakes for predictions with high Dice scores. Additional topological analysis revealed further areas for improvement in detecting certain CoW components and matching CoW variant topology accurately. Bulk composites using powder blends of Mn and Bi with equal atomic ratios are consolidated and severely deformed by high-pressure torsion (HPT). Subsequent annealing treatments lead to the formation of the ferromagnetic and rare-earth free hard magnetic {\alpha}-MnBi phase. The initial phase formation is studied by in-situ high-energy XRD annealing experiments showing a beneficial influence of HPT-deformation on the amount of {\alpha}-MnBi. The nucleation sites are strongly increased, thus the volumetric {\alpha}-MnBi phase content exceeds 50 vol.%. A lower HPT-pressure of 2 GPa is found to be preferred over 5 GPa to obtain high {\alpha}-MnBi contents. Annealing is done with or without applying an external magnetic field. Additionally, influences of the HPT-induced shear deformation are discussed and correlated with preferred diffusion path ways fostering the formation of anisotropic {\alpha}-MnBi phase.

Scene representation networks (SRNs) have been recently proposed for compression and visualization of scientific data. However, state-of-the-art SRNs do not adapt the allocation of available network parameters to the complex features found in scientific data, leading to a loss in reconstruction quality. We address this shortcoming with an adaptively placed multi-grid SRN (APMGSRN) and propose a domain decomposition training and inference technique for accelerated parallel training on multi-GPU systems. We also release an open-source neural volume rendering application that allows plug-and-play rendering with any PyTorch-based SRN. Our proposed APMGSRN architecture uses multiple spatially adaptive feature grids that learn where to be placed within the domain to dynamically allocate more neural network resources where error is high in the volume, improving state-of-the-art reconstruction accuracy of SRNs for scientific data without requiring expensive octree refining, pruning, and traversal like previous adaptive models. In our domain decomposition approach for representing large-scale data, we train an set of APMGSRNs in parallel on separate bricks of the volume to reduce training time while avoiding overhead necessary for an out-of-core solution for volumes too large to fit in GPU memory. After training, the lightweight SRNs are used for realtime neural volume rendering in our open-source renderer, where arbitrary view angles and transfer functions can be explored. We present a neural network approach to compute stream functions, which are scalar functions with gradients orthogonal to a given vector field. As a result, isosurfaces of the stream function extract stream surfaces, which can be visualized to analyze flow features. Our approach takes a vector field as input and trains an implicit neural representation to learn a stream function for that vector field. The network learns to map input coordinates to a stream function value by minimizing the inner product of the gradient of the neural network's output and the vector field. Since stream function solutions may not be unique, we give optional constraints for the network to learn particular stream functions of interest. Specifically, we introduce regularizing loss functions that can optionally be used to generate stream function solutions whose stream surfaces follow the flow field's curvature, or that can learn a stream function that includes a stream surface passing through a seeding rake. We also discuss considerations for properly visualizing the trained implicit network and extracting artifact-free surfaces. In spring 2022, the German federal government agreed on a set of policy measures that aimed at reducing households' financial burden resulting from a recent price increase, especially in energy and mobility. These included among others, a nationwide public transport ticket for 9~Euro per month for three months in June, July, and August 2022. In transport policy research this is an almost unprecedented behavioral experiment. It allows us to study not only behavioral responses in mode choice and induced demand but also to assess the effectiveness of these instruments. We observe this natural experiment with a three-wave survey and a smartphone-based travel diary with passive tracking on an initial sample of 2,261 participants with a focus on the Munich metropolitan region. This area is chosen as it offers a variety of mode options with a dense and far-reaching public transport network that even provides good access to many leisure destinations. The app has been providing data from 756 participants until the end of September, the three-wave survey by 1,402, and the app and the three waves by 637 participants. In this paper, we report on the study design, the recruitment and study participation as well as the impacts of the policy measures on the self-reported and app-observed travel behavior; we present results on consumer choices for a successor ticket to the 9-Euro-Ticket that started in May 2023. We find a substantial shift in the modal share towards public transport from the car in our sample during the 9-Euro-Ticket period in travel distance (around 5 %) and in trip frequency (around 7 %). The mobility outcomes of the 9-Euro-Ticket however provide evidence that cheap public transport as a policy instrument does not suffice to incentive sustainable travel behavior choices and that other policy instruments are required in addition.

This project is centered around building a neural network that is able to recognize ASL letters in images, particularly within the scope of a live video feed. Initial testing results came up short of expectations when both the convolutional network and VGG16 transfer learning approaches failed to generalize in settings of different backgrounds. The use of a pre-trained hand joint detection model was then adopted with the produced joint locations being fed into a fully-connected neural network. What is the nature of a star forming clump? Observations reveal these to be chaotic environments being modified and influenced by many physical processes. However, numerical simulations often define these initial star forming clumps to be idealised objects. In this paper, we define and analyse 109 star forming clumps extracted from our previous low-mass star cluster simulations. To define a clump, we identify all the gas in a simulation that ever becomes bound to or accreted onto a star, then follow the gas backwards in time until it decreases to a critical density. This gas, and its neighbouring gas, is defined as our star forming clump. Our clumps span a mass range of $0.15 \lesssim M/$M$_\odot \lesssim 10.2$, while the density range within each clump spans 2--4 orders of magnitude. The gas density distribution is not smooth, indicating that it is highly structured. The clumps are turbulent, with no coherent rotation. Independent of the initial magnetic field strength of the parent cloud, all clumps yield a similar range of field strengths. The clump magnetic field is ordered, but not reflective of the initial field geometry of the parent cloud. In general, most clump properties have a slight trend with clump mass but are independent of (or only very weakly dependent on) the properties of the parent cloud. Using a $30\,\mathrm{keV}$ focused He ion beam (He-FIB) with a wide range of irradiation doses $D=100$ to $1000\,\mathrm{ions/nm}$ we fabricated Josephson and resistive barriers within microbridges of epitaxially grown single crystalline YBCO thin films and investigated the change of their electric transport properties with time. One set of samples (#1A) was simply stored at room temperature under nitrogen atmosphere. A second set (#2D) was post-annealed at $90^\circ\,\mathrm{C}$ using high oxygen pressures and a third set (#2E) at low oxygen pressures. We found that for #1A the critical current density $j_c$ at $4.2\,\mathrm{K}$ changes as $j_c\propto\exp(-\sqrt{t/\tau})$ with time $t$, where the relaxation times $\tau$ increases exponentially with $D$, which can be described within a limited diffusion based model. In order to increase the diffusion rate we annealed the junctions from #2D at $90^\circ\,\mathrm{C}$ for $30\,\mathrm{min}$ in oxygen environment. Directly after annealing the critical current density $j_c$ increased, while the normal state resistance $R_n$ decreased. Repeated measurements showed that within a week the junctions relaxed to a quasi-stable state, in which the time scale for junction parameter variations increased to several weeks, making this a feasible option to achieve temporal stability of parameters of He-FIB Josephson junctions in YBCO.

We model the collision of molecular clouds to investigate the role of the initial properties on the remnants. Our clouds collide and evolve in a background medium that is approximately ten times less dense than the clouds, and we show that this relatively dense background is dynamically important for the evolution of the collision remnants. Given the motion of the clouds and the remnants through the background, we develop, implement, and introduce dynamic boundary conditions. We investigate the effect of the initial cloud mass, velocity, internal turbulence, and impact angle. The initial velocity and its velocity components have the largest affect on the remnant. This affects the spatial extent of the remnant, which affects the number of resulting star clusters and the distribution of their masses. The less extended remnants tend to have fewer, but more massive, clusters. Unlike the clusters, the gas distributions are relatively insensitive to the initial conditions, both the distribution of the bulk gas properties and the gas clumps. In general, cloud collisions are relatively insensitive to their initial conditions when modelled hydrodynamically in a dynamically important background medium., Comment: 22 pages, 23 figures. The competition between intrinsic disorder in superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) thin films and an ultradense triangular lattice of cylindrical pinning centers spaced at 30 nm intervals results in an ordered Bose glass phase of vortices. The samples were created by scanning the focused beam of a helium-ion microscope over the surface of the YBCO thin film to form columns of point defects where superconductivity was locally suppressed. The voltage-current isotherms reveal critical behavior and scale in the vicinity of the second-order glass transition. The latter exhibits a distinct peak in melting temperature ($T_g$) vs. applied magnetic field ($B_a$) at the magnetic commensurability field, along with a sharp rise in the lifetimes of glassy fluctuations. Angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements in constant-Lorentz-force geometry unveil a strong increase in anisotropy compared to a pristine reference film where the density of vortices matches that of the columnar defects. The pinning is therefore, dominated by the magnetic-field component parallel to the columnar defects, exposing its one-dimensional character. Ferromagnetic (Fe or Fe20Ni80) and antiferromagnetic (NiO) phases were deformed by high pressure torsion, a severe plastic deformation technique, to manufacture bulk sized nanocomposites and demonstrate an exchange bias, which has been reported predominantly for bilayer thin films. High pressure torsion deformation at elevated temperatures proved to be the key to obtain homogeneous bulk nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction investigations detected nanocrystallinity of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. Furthermore, an additional phase was identified by X-ray diffraction, which formed during deformation at elevated temperatures through the reduction of NiO by Fe. Depending on the initial powder composition of Fe50NiO50 or Fe10Ni40NiO50 the new phase was magnetite or maghemite, respectively. Magnetometry measurements demonstrated an exchange bias in the high pressure torsion processed bulk nanocomposites. Additionally, a tailoring of magnetic parameters was demonstrated by the application of different strains or post-process annealing. A correlation between the amount of applied strain and exchange bias was found. The increase of exchange bias through applied strain was related to the microstructural refinement of the nanocomposite. These measures included among others, a nation-wide public transport ticket for 9EUR per month and a fuel tax cut that reduced fuel prices by more than 15%. In transportation policy and travel behavior research this is an almost unprecedented behavioral experiment. It allows to study not only behavioral responses in mode choice and induced demand but also to assess the effectiveness of transport policy instruments. We observe this natural experiment with a three-wave survey and an app-based travel diary on a sample 2'263 individuals; for the Munich Study, 919 participants in the survey-and-app group and 425 in the survey-only group have been successfully recruited, while 919 participants have been recruited through a professional panel provider to obtain a representative nation-wide reference group for the three-wave survey. In this fourth report we present the results of the third wave. At the end of the study, all three surveys have been completed by 1'484 participants and 642 participants completed all three surveys and used the travel diary throughout the entire study. Based on our results we conclude that when offering a 49EUR-Ticket as a successor to the 9~EUR-Ticket and a local travel pass for 30EUR/month more than 60% of all 9~EUR-Ticket owners would buy one of the two new travel passes. In other words, a substantial increase in travel pass ownership in Germany can be expected, with our modest estimate being around 20%. The defect-rich morphology of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) thin films leads to a glass-like arrangement of Abrikosov vortices which causes the resistance to disappear in vanishing current densities. This vortex glass consists of entangled vortex lines and is identified by a characteristic scaling of the voltage-current isotherms. Randomly distributed columnar defects stratify the vortex lines and lead to a Bose glass. Here, we report on the observation of an ordered Bose glass in a YBCO thin film with a hexagonal array of columnar defects with 30 nm spacings. Severe plastic deformation using high-pressure torsion of ternary Cu-based materials (CuFeCo and CuFeNi) was used to fabricate bulk samples with a nanocrystalline microstructure. The goal was to produce materials featuring the granular giant magnetoresistance effect, requiring interfaces between ferro- and nonmagnetic materials. This magnetic effect was found for both ternary systems; adequate subsequent annealing had a positive influence. The as-deformed states, as well as microstructural changes upon thermal treatments, were studied using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. Deducing from electron microscopy, a single-phase structure was observed for all as-deformed samples, indicating the formation of a supersaturated solid solution. However, judging from the presence of the granular giant-magnetoresistive effect, small ferromagnetic particles have to be present. The highest drop in room temperature resistivity (2.45% at 1790 kA/m) was found in Cu62Fe19Ni19 after annealing for 1 h at 400 {\deg}C. Combining the results of classical microstructural studies and magnetic measurements, insights into the evolution of ferromagnetic particles are accessible.

Multicore optical fibers and ribbons based on fiber arrays allow for massively parallel transmission of signals via spatially separated channels, thereby offering attractive bandwidth scaling with linearly increasing technical effort. However, low-loss coupling of light between fiber arrays or multicore fibers and standard linear arrays of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) or photodiodes (PD) still represents a challenge. In this paper, we demonstrate that 3D-printed facet-attached microlenses (FaML) offer an attractive path for connecting multimode fiber arrays as well as individual cores of multimode multicore fibers to standard arrays of VCSEL or PD. The freeform coupling elements are printed in situ with high precision on the device and fiber facets by high-resolution multi-photon lithography. We demonstrate coupling losses down to 0.35 dB along with lateral 1 dB alignment tolerances in excess of 10 $\mu$m, allowing to leverage fast passive assembly techniques that rely on industry-standard machine vision. To the best of our knowledge, our experiments represent the first demonstration of a coupling interface that connects individual cores of a multicore fiber to VCSEL or PD arranged in a standard linear array without the need for additional fiber-based or waveguide-based fan-out structures. Using this approach, we build a 3 x 25 Gbit/s transceiver assembly which fits into a small form-factor pluggable module and which fulfills many performance metrics specified in the IEEE 802.3 standard.

Free-floating (or rogue) planets are planets that are liberated (or ejected) from their host systems. Although simulations predict their existence in substantial numbers, direct observational evidence for free-floating planets with masses below ~5 MJup is still lacking. Several cycle-1 observing programs with JWST aim to hunt for them in four different star-forming clusters. These surveys are designed to be sensitive to masses of 1-15 MJup (assuming a hot-start formation), which corresponds to spectral types of early L to late T for the ages of these clusters. If the existing simulations are not wide off the mark, we show here that the planned programs are likely to find up to 10-20 giant rogue planets in moderate density clusters like NGC1333 or IC348, and several dozen to ~100 in high-density regions like NGC2024 and the Orion Nebula Cluster. These numbers correspond to 1-5% of the total cluster population; they could be substantially higher if stars form multiple giant planets at birth. In contrast, the number of free-floating brown dwarfs, formed from core collapse ("like stars") is expected to be significantly lower, only about 0.25% of the number of stars, or 1-7 for the clusters considered here. Below 10 MJup that number drops further by an order of magnitude. We also show that the planned surveys are not at risk of being significantly contaminated by field brown dwarfs in the foreground or background, after spectroscopic confirmation. Direct observational measurements of the magnetic field strength in prestellar cores typically find supercritical mass-to-flux ratios, suggesting that the magnetic field is insufficient to prevent gravitational collapse. These measurements suffer from significant uncertainties; an alternative approach is to utilise the sensitivity of prestellar chemistry to the evolutionary history, and indirectly constrain the degree of magnetic support. We combine non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic simulations of prestellar cores with time-dependent chemistry and radiative transfer modelling, producing synthetic observations of the model cores in several commonly-observed molecular lines. We find that molecules strongly affected by freeze-out, such as CS and HCN, typically have much lower line intensities in magnetically subcritical models compared to supercritical ones, due to the longer collapse timescales. Subcritical models also produce much narrower lines for all species investigated. Accounting for a range of core properties, ages and viewing angles, we find that supercritical models are unable to reproduce the distribution of CS and N$_2$H$^+$ line strengths and widths seen in an observational sample, whereas subcritical models are in good agreement with the available data. This suggests that despite presently having supercritical mass-to-flux ratios, prestellar cores form as magnetically subcritical objects., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. MNRAS accepted
