Although there have been numerous studies on the heritage attributes, characteristics, and values of the historic garden as a special category of cultural heritage, the question is why a comprehensive review combining mainstream historic garden conservation with ways of understanding the garden in a landscape context has not been conducted. Landscape is an integrative concept that combines physical features and the diversity of functions with social and ecological processes throughout the scales of time and space. Therefore, this landscape context means applying the landscape approach to explore the organic connection between the scale of evolution and the architectonic elements in relation to each other. To elaborate, instead of viewing the garden as an object in one specific temporal-spatial frame, such an approach focuses on the evolution of the site in order to identify persistent structures and other values. The method used in this study involved paper coding as qualitative analysis combined with bibliometric visualization software. We reviewed 162 studies to explore the interconnections between the historic garden and landscape approach. The result is that there are three correspondences between landscape approaches and different stages of the historic garden’s conservation and development: studies identifying the historic garden’s characteristics using landscape mapping, studies demonstrating historic gardens’ conservation based on landscape planning, and studies exploring the potential of development and reuse through landscape design. Fatigue cracks in the stiffener-to-deck plate connections of orthotropic bridge decks, initiating from the weld toe or root and propagating into the stiffener or weld throat, are experimentally and numerically studied. A statistical analysis of the structural stress is carried out using the experimental data. Automatic welded specimens show a significantly higher fatigue resistance than manual welded ones for both details of the study. Including results in the literature, the characteristic fatigue resistances appear larger than the values in current standards and range between 100 and 160 MPa. A proposal for the fatigue resistance values is given for design purposes. The effective notch stress, averaged strain energy density factor, and fracture mechanics methods are employed to study the sensitivity of the weld toe and root cracks for different (geometrical) variations, such as the lack of weld penetration. Among them, the fracture mechanics method agrees best with the experimental data. With the increase of weld penetration ratios from 75% to 100%, the fracture mechanics predicted fatigue resistances remain approximately equal for the weld toe cracks and increase for the weld root cracks., Steel & Composite Structures

Vibro-assisted fluidization of cohesive micro-silica has been studied by means of X-ray imaging, pressure drop measurements, and off-line determination of the agglomerate size. Pressure drop and bed height development could be explained by observable phenomena taking place in the bed; slugging, channeling, fluidization or densification. It was observed that channeling is the main cause of poor fluidization of the micro-silica, resulting in poor gas-solid contact and little internal mixing. Improvement in fluidization upon starting the mechanical vibration was achieved by disrupting the channels. Nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes promise ultrahigh energy density but is plagued by the mechanical failure of the secondary particle upon (de)lithiation. Existing approaches for alleviating the structural degradation could retard pulverization, yet fail to tune the stress distribution and root out the formation of cracks. Herein, we report a unique strategy to uniformize the stress distribution in secondary particle via Kirkendall effect to stabilize the core region during electrochemical cycling. Exotic metal/metalloid oxides (such as Al2O3 or SiO2) is introduced as the heterogeneous nucleation seeds for the preferential growth of the precursor. The calcination treatment afterwards generates a dopant-rich interior structure with central Kirkendall void, due to the different diffusivity between the exotic element and nickel atom. The resulting cathode material exhibits superior structural and electrochemical reversibility, thus contributing to a high specific energy density (based on cathode) of 660 Wh kg−1 after 500 cycles with a retention rate of 86%. This article presents a comparison study of different aerodynamic models for an X-shaped vertical-axis wind turbine and offers insight into the 3D aerodynamics of this rotor at fixed pitch offsets. The study compares six different numerical models: a double-multiple streamtube (DMS) model, a 2D actuator cylinder (2DAC) model, an inviscid free vortex wake model (from CACTUS), a free vortex wake model with turbulent vorticity (from QBlade), a blade-resolved unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) model, and a lattice Boltzmann method (from PowerFLOW). All models, except URANS and PowerFLOW use the same blade element characteristics other than the number of blade elements. This comparison covers the present rotor configuration for several tip-speed ratios and fixed blade pitch offsets without unsteady corrections, except for the URANS and PowerFLOW which cover a single case. The results show that DMS and 2DAC models are inaccurate – especially at highly loaded conditions, are unable to predict the downwind blade vortex interaction, and do not capture the vertical/axial induction this rotor exhibits. The vortex models are consistent with each other, and the differences when compared against the URANS and PowerFLOW mostly arise due to the unsteady and flow curvature effects. Offshore wind energy is expected to be the most significant source of future electricity supply in Europe. Offshore wind farms are located far from the shores, requiring a fleet of various types of vessels to access sites when maintaining offshore wind turbines. The employment of the vessels is costly, accounting for the majority of the total O&M costs for offshore wind energy. Therefore, configuring the size and mix of the vessel fleet to support maintenance operations in a cost-effective manner is an issue of importance to enhance economics of offshore wind sector. In this paper, a discrete event simulation based model is proposed to present how a mixed vessel fleet with the specific configuration, including crew transfer vessels, field support vessels, and heavy lift vessels, performs maintenance for an offshore wind farm. The economic performance of the vessel fleet under a predetermined condition-based opportunistic maintenance strategy is investigated by using the model. A metaheuristic algorithm, simulated annealing, is employed to find the optimal fleet size and mix to make leasing decisions with the minimum costs. The performance of the developed approaches is evaluated by using a generic offshore wind farm in the North Sea. Improper fuel loading decision results in carrying excessive dead weight during flight operation, which will burden the airline operation cost and cause extra waste emission. Existing works mainly focused on the post-event fuel consumption based on flight trajectory. In this work, a novel deep learning model, called FCPNet, is proposed to achieve the fuel consumption prediction (FCP) before the flight departure. Considering the influential factors for aircraft performance, the multi-modal information sources, including the planned route, weather information, and operation details, are selected as the model input to predict fuel consumption. Correspondingly, three modules are innovatively proposed to learn embedding features from multi-modal inputs. Based on the planned route, the graph convolutional network is proposed to mine the spatial correlations in the non-Eulerian route network. Considering the grid attributes of the weather information, the ConvLSTM is applied to learn abstract representations from both the temporal and spatial dimensions, in which the three-dimensional convolution neural networks are also designed to fine-tune intermediate feature maps. The fully connected layer is also proposed to learn informative features from operation details. Finally, an attention-based fusion network is presented to generate the final embedding by considering the unique contributions of the multi-modality sources, which are further applied to predict flight fuel consumption. A binary encoding representation is proposed to formulate the FCP task as a multi-binary classification problem. The agglomeration of cohesive particles can deteriorate fluidization quality and cause the defluidization of a bed, which is a common issue found in the applications of fluidized beds. This study aims to gain a better understanding of particle cohesion on agglomeration/fluidization behaviors and the effective methods for achieving a better fluidization quality, through numerical simulations based on the coupled approach of computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method (CFD-DEM). The effects of particle cohesion, gas velocities or flow conditions, and the bed geometry on the agglomeration and fluidization behaviors are analyzed. It is shown that the increase of particle cohesion can lead to deteriorated particle mixing, significant agglomeration of particles, and defluidization of the bed; the agglomeration-induced defluidization of highly cohesive particles is difficult to mitigate in a conventional flat-bottom fluidized bed. As large-sized agglomerates are more frequently found in the bottom of the bed, the spouted gas flow is then utilized and demonstrated to be effective in assisting the deagglomeration and fluidization of highly cohesive particles. Through the comparison of various spouted beds and spouted fluidized beds, the effective design of the bed bottom is identified for achieving a higher fluidization quality. Corresponding mechanisms underlying spout-assisted deagglomeration and fluidization are found to be much related to not only the enhanced particle-fluid but also particle-wall interactions in the confined space of a conical bed bottom, thus explaining the effectiveness and the importance of the bottom conical geometry of spouted beds. In this study, the impact of different vibrational modes on the fluidization characteristics of cohesive micro- and nano-silica powder was examined. Fractional pressure drop, bed expansion measurements, and X-ray imaging were utilized to characterize the fluidization quality. The densities of the emulsion phase at the top and bottom of the column were quantified and compared, providing insights into the solid distribution within the fluidized bed. In the absence of vibration, neither powder could be fluidized within the considered range of superficial gas velocities. Vertical vibration was found to initiate fluidization for both powders. In contrast, elliptical vibration failed to overcome the channelling behavior when fluidizing the micro-powder. For nano-powder, combined channelling and powder compaction occurred when the bed was subjected to elliptical vibration. For the micro-powder, it was observed that bed homogeneity was independent of vertical vibration intensity but improved with increasing superficial gas velocity. For nano-powder, intensifying vertical vibration led to segregation, likely due to agglomerate densification. Recent years have seen a growing interest in topology optimization of functionally graded microstructures, characterized by an array of microstructures with varying volume fractions. However, microstructures optimized at slightly different volume fractions do not necessarily connect well when placed adjacently. Furthermore, optimization is commonly performed on a finite set of volume fractions, limiting the number of microstructure configurations. In this paper, we introduce the concept of differentiable microstructures, which are parameterized microstructures that exhibit continuous variations in both geometry and mechanical properties. To construct such microstructures, we propose a novel formulation for topology optimization. In this approach, a series of 2-dimensional microstructures is represented using a height field, and the objective is to maximize the bulk modulus of the entire series. Through this optimization process, an initial microstructure with a small volume fraction undergoes non-uniform transformations, generating a series of microstructures with progressively increasing volume fractions. Model-based strategies are a promising solution to the grand challenge of equipping continuum soft robots with motor intelligence. However, finite-dimensional models of these systems are inherently inaccurate, thus posing pressing robustness concerns. Moreover, the actuation space of soft robots is usually limited. This article aims at solving both these challenges by proposing a robust model-based strategy for the shape control of soft robots with system uncertainty and input saturation. The proposed architecture is composed of two key components. First, we propose an observer that estimates deviations between the theoretical model and the soft robot, ensuring that the estimation error converges to zero within finite time. Second, we introduce a sliding mode controller to regulate the soft robot shape while fulfilling saturation constraints. This controller uses the observer's output to compensate for the deviations between the real system and the established model. The present study proposes a novel model to modify master S-N curves of components according to their load redistribution capability reflected in different boundary conditions (BCs) based on the fracture mechanics analysis. To that end, a comprehensive numerical study was conducted on a Single Edge Notch Bend (SENB) specimen constrained with different kinematic BCs using discrete fatigue crack growth (FCG) simulation. It was observed that BCs indeed can have a significant effect on the crack growth behavior and consequently on the resulting fatigue life under the same nominal loading conditions. The proposed model was applied to the S-N curve of a T-welded joint, and the predicted fatigue life was validated against 3D FCG simulations. The implementation of prefabricated housing (PH) has become prevalent in China recently due to its advantages in enhancing production and energy-saving efficiency within the construction system. However, stakeholders may not always fully realize the benefits of adopting PH due to the emergence of transaction costs (TCs) in the development process of such projects. This study investigated the strategies for developers to make rational choices for minimizing the TCs of the PH project considering their own attributes and external constraints. A Bayesian Belief Network model was applied as the analytical method, based on surveys conducted in China. A single sensitivity analysis indicated that developers influence the TCs of PH through the following three most impactful factors: prefabrication rate, PH experience, and contract payment method. Integrated strategies are recommended for developers in various situations based on a multiple sensitivity analysis. Developers facing challenges due to high prefabrication rates are advised to reduce the risks by procuring highly qualified general contractors and adopting unit-price contracts. For developers with limited PH experience, adopting the Engineering–Procurement–Construction procurement method is the most efficient way to reduce their TCs in the context of China’s PH market. Petroleum products have contaminated groundwater with harmful organic compounds, such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX). Collecting and analyzing polluted groundwater samples is expensive and undertaken infrequently. However, quick remedial action in case of unexpected events requires continuous monitoring. In-situ water quality sensors (pH, EC, DO, ORP) may show correlations with the components of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) such as aromatics and non-volatile mobile fractions. Correlations are prerequisite to ultimately develop real-time prediction models. Since suitable field data sets are limited, we simulated the fate of hydrocarbons in groundwater under various realistic conditions using a reactive transport model as novel approach to explore when, where, and why correlations occur. A stationary oil source zone continuously dissolved at the top of a heterogeneous and shallow sandy aquifer over a two-dimensional cross-section. Our model considered transient conditions (fluctuating water table) and spatially uniform hydrogeochemical composition. We observed a strong correlation between PHCs and water quality sensors (rolling Spearman's correlation > |0.8|) at varying periods. These correlations are strongly affected by the location of observation wells, the aquifer's hydraulic conductivity, and the availability of calcite and oxide minerals, and other electron acceptors. DO and ORP are significant for the early detection of hydrocarbon contamination, whereas pH and EC are important features for the long-term monitoring of hydrocarbons. Since the development of the best–worst method (BWM) in 2015, it has become a popular research focus in multi-criteria decision-making. The original optimization problem of the BWM is a nonlinear min–max model that can lead to multiple optimal solutions, while the linear model of the BWM produces a unique solution. The two models need to be solved by optimization software packages. In addition, although the linear model of the BWM can obtain a unique solution, it produces different feasible regions than the nonlinear model of the BWM, and it changes the objective function. This study aims to solve the nonlinear model of the BWM mathematically to obtain the analytical forms of the optimal solutions. First, we transform the original nonlinear model of BWM into an equivalent optimization model driven by the optimally modified comparison vectors. The equivalent BWM provides a solid basis for computing the analytical solutions. Second, for not-fully consistent pairwise comparison systems, we strictly prove that there is only one unique optimal solution with three criteria, and there might be multiple optimal solutions with more than three criteria. We further develop the analytical forms of these unique and multiple optimal solutions and the optimal interval weights. Third, we develop a secondary objective function to select a unique solution for the BWM. The secondary objective function retains all the characteristics of the original nonlinear model of the BWM, and we find the unique solution analytically. Stochastic electrochemical measurement has come of age as a powerful analytical tool in corrosion science, electrophysiology, and single-entity electrochemistry. It relies on the fundamental trait that most electrochemical processes are stochastic and discrete in nature. Stochastic measurement of a single entity probes the charge transfer from a few or even one electroactive species. In corrosion, the stochastic measurements capture either the average amplitude/frequency of many events taking place spontaneously or probe discrete transients, signifying localized dissolution. The measurement principles vary in corrosion, single-entity, and electrophysiology, yet the main quantifiable values are commonly the frequency and amplitude of events. Organic polymer-based composite materials with favorable mechanical performance and functionalities are keystones to various modern industries; however, the environmental pollution stemming from their processing poses a great challenge. In this study, by finding an autonomous phase separating ability of fungal mycelium, a new material fabrication approach is introduced that leverages such biological metabolism-driven, mycelial growth-induced phase separation to bypass high-energy cost and labor-intensive synthetic methods. The resulting self-regenerative composites, featuring an entangled network structure of mycelium and assembled organic polymers, exhibit remarkable self-healing properties, being capable of reversing complete separation and restoring ≈90% of the original strength. These composites further show exceptional mechanical strength, with a high specific strength of 8.15 MPa g.cm−3, and low water absorption properties (≈33% after 15 days of immersion). Steel Orthotropic Bridge Decks (OBDs) are widely used in long-span and movable bridges. Fatigue resistance analysis plays an important role in the design or assessment of OBDs. One possible fatigue failure is the crack initiating from the weld root of stiffener-to-deck plate connections at crossbeams. A full-scale experimental investigation in this study using a 20 mm thick deck plate with a dimension of 9.4 m × 5.1 m, including three crossbeams, represents the modern designed OBDs. The experiments show an arrest of crack propagation with a final crack depth of approximately 75% of the deck plate thickness. On the contrary, through thickness cracks develop in deck plates of 10 or 12 mm. Hot spot stress based fatigue detail categories (DC) using various failure criteria derived from the tests. Analysis with the effective notch stress shows that the DC has low sensitivity to the amount of weld penetration. The results of analyses with the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM), employed to analyse the fatigue crack propagation path and crack arrest, are in line with the experimental study., Steel & Composite Structures

Bioenergy from energy crops is a source of negative emissions and carbon-neutral fuels in many 1.5/2 ∘C IPCC pathways. This may compete with other land uses. In contrast, ancillary biomass like by-products and waste is not primarily grown for energy and thus without land/food/feed competition. Here, we examine the availability and environmental impacts of ancillary bioenergy from agricultural sources under 190 circular agroecological strategies using the global food-system model SOLm for the year 2050. We find that there is a diverse option space for the future food and energy system to meet both global warming targets (1.5 ∘C) and food system sustainability (medium to highly organic) – a similar range of ancillary bioenergy global potential (55–65 EJ)from very different food systems (50%–75% organic agriculture and various levels of waste and concentrate feeding reduction). We find three trade-offs between food system sustainability and ancillary bioenergy provision. First, there is a clear trade-off between nutrient recycling and negative emissions potential. 1.4–2.6 GTCO2eq of negative emissions supplied through ancillary bioenergy with carbon capture and storage comes at the cost of nutrient deficits and resulting incompatibility with even a medium degree of organic farming. Second, reducing feed from croplands increases the ancillary bioenergy production with low shares of organic agriculture and reduces it for high shares. Third, food waste reduction reduces ancillary bioenergy provision. Hence, the sustainable transformation of the food system towards a less animal-based diet and waste reduction may conflict with a higher ancillary bioenergy provision, especially when the organic share is high as well. The policy implication of our results is that ancillary bioenergy can provide a similar range of future bioenergy as foreseen in IPCC AR6 illustrative pathways (±10% ) without additional land use or compromising food availability. Stirring has been recognized in the literature as a promising technique for facilitating fluidization of cohesive powders, via inputting additional energy to counteract interparticle forces. However, the influence of operating conditions and stirrer configurations on flow behavior remains largely unknown, which impedes the practical implementation of stirred fluidization. Utilizing X-ray imaging, this research demonstrates that stirring enhances fluidization in cohesive micron-silica powder (Sauter mean diameter [Formula presented]) by collapsing the powder packing structure, and transitioning channeling beds into bubbling states. Comb-like configurations featuring fewer stirrers and blades, placed in the bottom region, have shown to be highly effective. Excessive stirring can lead to air pockets and a compacted phase of particles on the column walls, undermining the interaction between particles and stirrers. Minimally Invasive Procedures (MIPs) emerged as an alternative to more invasive surgical approaches, offering patient benefits such as smaller incisions, less pain, and shorter hospital stay. In one class of MIPs, where natural body lumens or small incisions are used to access deeper anatomical locations, Flexible Surgical and Interventional Robots (FSIRs) such as catheters and endoscopes are widely used. Due to their flexible and compliant nature, FSIRs can be inserted via natural orifices or small incisions, then moved towards hard-to-reach targets to perform interventional tasks. However, existing FSIRs are confronted with challenges in sensing, control, and navigation. These issues stem from the robot's non-linear behavior and the intricate nature of the lumens, where accurately modeling the complex interactions and disturbances proves to be exceptionally difficult. The rapid advances in Machine Learning (ML) have facilitated the widespread adoption of ML techniques in FSIRs. This article provides an overview of these efforts by first introducing a classification of existing ML algorithms, including traditional ML methods and modern Deep Learning (DL) approaches, commonly used in FSIRs. Next, the use of ML algorithms is surveyed per sub-domain, namely for perception, modeling, control, and navigation. Trends, popularity, strengths, and/or limitations of different ML algorithms are analyzed. The different roles that ML plays among tasks are investigated and described. Introduction: Individuals with burnout often experience cognitive challenges in general performance or the excessive effort to perform certain tasks. With the increasing work pace over the years, on average, over 10% of workers in Europe and over 17% in non-European countries had experienced burnout up until 2018 (Schaufeli, 2018). Personal solutions like websites and guided meditation applications have emerged to help alleviate burnout symptoms. Governments have passed legislation to prevent burnout from occurring. The advancing cognitive personal informatics (CPI) technology has made it possible to monitor psychophysiological data and quantify human cognition and cognitive activities. The quantified human cognition-related data could be of great value to people who wish to be more aware of their condition or needs and refer to this information in reflective activities to become a better version of themselves. Methodology: Three main research questions were generated to inquire about the role of cognitive data in burnout solutions. This project follows the principles of participatory design and the double diamond framework with minor adaptations to answer the research questions. Background research was conducted to gather theoretical and practical information on topics related to burnout solutions, measures of cognitive data, and state-of-the-art CPI technology. Semi-structured interviews with people with burnout experience were conducted as a user study. Creative sessions with target users were conducted to guide the design direction. Results: The background research clarified the basic burnout profile as well as the cognitive burnout correlates that can be measured by CPI systems. This part of the research elaborated on 7 key correlates that can later be applied in the design phase. For the first six months I studied the essential values of collective housing in post war period, how they prompted to solve housing crisis and how they embraced the collectivism in Europe and China. It turned out that most of them did not maintain the original function as a collective housing for working class. However, the concept of collective living continued to influence urban life. In response, the design approach for renovating the 1952 Workers' New Village in Shenyang, China aimed to demonstrate the potential for reviving this old form for communal living. The problem of learning-based control for robots has been extensively studied, whereas the security issue under malicious adversaries has not been paid much attention to. Malicious adversaries can invade intelligent devices and communication networks used in robots, causing incidents, achieving illegal objectives, and even injuring people. This article first investigates the problems of optimal false data injection attack scheduling and countermeasure design for car-like robots in the framework of deep reinforcement learning. Using a state-of-the-art deep reinforcement learning approach, an optimal false data injection attack scheme is proposed to deteriorate the tracking performance of a robot, guaranteeing the tradeoff between the attack efficiency and the limited attack energy. Then, an optimal tracking control strategy is learned to mitigate attacks and recover the tracking performance. More importantly, a theoretical stability guarantee of a robot using the learning-based secure control scheme is achieved. This paper investigates the deep reinforcement learning based secure control problem for cyber–physical systems (CPS) under false data injection attacks. We describe the CPS under attacks as a Markov decision process (MDP), based on which the secure controller design for CPS under attacks is formulated as an action policy learning using data. Rendering the soft actor–critic learning algorithm, a Lyapunov-based soft actor–critic learning algorithm is proposed to offline train a secure policy for CPS under attacks. Different from the existing results, not only the convergence of the learning algorithm but the stability of the system using the learned policy is proved, which is quite important for security and stability-critical applications. To meet the needs of the road industry for maintenance operations, a new cement emulsified bitumen mixture (CEBM) with early-strength, self-compacting, and room-temperature construction characteristics was designed. The strength formation mechanism of CEBM was revealed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the surface free energy (SFE) theory. The mechanical properties and road performance of the CEBM were investigated extensively. The results show that before the demulsification of emulsified bitumen, the SFE of the bitumen–aggregate–water three-phase system was reduced due to the replacement of the bitumen–aggregate interface with water. The adhesion work between the emulsified bitumen and the aggregate is negative, which means the adhesion between the emulsified bitumen and the aggregate will not occur spontaneously due to the existence of water. The liquid emulsified bitumen improves the workability of the mixture and ensures that the mixture can be evenly mixed and self-compacted. After demulsification, the work of adhesion between the residual bitumen and the aggregate is positive, which means residual bitumen and aggregate can bond spontaneously. In addition, the hydration products of cement and aggregate form a skeleton, and the emulsified bitumen film wraps and bonds the cement and aggregate together, creating strength. The emulsified bitumen, cement content, and curing conditions have significant effects on the stability of CEBM. The recommended dosage of emulsified bitumen and cement is 8% and 8–10%, respectively. This material integrates the hardening effect of cement and the viscoelastic performance of bitumen and has good workability, mechanical properties, and road performance. Hydrocarbons are essential base chemicals as energy carriers and starting materials for chemical manufacture. So-called fatty acid photodecarboxylases (FAPs) represent interesting catalysts for the conversion of natural fatty acids into hydrocarbons thereby giving access to alkanes from renewable feedstock. Today, however, only few FAPs are known. In the current study we report a new FAP from the marine organism Micractinium conductrix (McFAP). In contrast to currently known FAPs McFAP exhibits high catalytic activity towards short and medium fatty acids. Traffic congestion is a challenge that frequently emerges due to changes in the roadways such as tunnels and sags, causing capacity reduction. The capacity drop phenomenon exacerbates traffic congestion, due to decreased queue discharge rates. Among the strategies employed for traffic management, Variable Speed Limit (VSL) control is a common approach to alleviate congestion and mitigate capacity drop. The control is expected to be more powerful when integrated with Connected Vehicles (CVs). However, the intricate interplay between the Market Penetration Rate (MPR) of CVs and the parameters governing VSL remains under-explored. This study seeks to quantify the relationship between the MPR of CVs and the key VSL parameters, encompassing factors like the optimal acceleration length and speed limits. The VSL control is applied to CVs at the road section upstream of a tunnel bottleneck modelled by a continuum car-following model with bounded acceleration. The findings of this research suggest a minimum MPR of CVs essential for preventing capacity drop and reaching the maximal outflow. Intriguingly, this challenges the conventional notion that regulating solely the leading vehicle suffices to govern the behaviours of all following vehicles. The value of the minimum MPR threshold is affected by the acceleration behaviours vehicles exhibit. Furthermore, this study underscores the importance of considering the MPR of CVs when devising the optimal speed limit and acceleration length for the VSL. It shows that while a higher speed limit can lead to higher throughput, the optimal acceleration length increases exponentially with the increasing speed limit, particularly in cases with low MPR of CVs. While adopting a relatively lower speed limit, the acceleration length can be reduced to 0m for all levels of MPR of CVs. Self-healing is a biological phenomenon in which living organism responds to the suffered damage in a complex way. Inspired by the self-healing phenomenon in nature, various biomimetic healing methods rooted in intrinsic or extrinsic healing mechanisms have been explored. Research on novel self-healing asphalt materials with intelligent response is at the cutting-edge of materials science and offers a potential strategy for building long-life and low-carbon asphalt concrete infrastructure. This paper describes the progress of research on extrinsic self-healing asphalt materials and makes a clear distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic self-healing. The asphalt self-healing mechanism is interpreted by capillary flow theory, phase field theory, molecular diffusion theory and surface energy theory form various perspective. The extrinsic self-healing strategies including thermal induced healing and rejuvenator induced healing are proposed to enhance the healing level of cracked asphalt materials. A brief review of the methods including fracture-healing test and fatigue-healing test for assessing the efficacy of different extrinsic healing methods is presented. The thermal induced healing method bring high crack repair efficiency for asphalt concrete and the rejuvenator induced healing strategy not only improve the healing ratio of cracked asphalt concrete but also regenerate the ageing asphalt in situ. Minimally invasive catheter-based interventions normally take place under the guidance of fluoroscopy. However, fluoroscopy is harmful to both patients and clinicians. Moreover, it only offers 2-D shape visualization of flexible devices. To solve the problem of harmful radiation and offer 3-D pose and shape information, recent studies propose a combination of electromagnetic tracking (EMT) sensors and multicore fiber Bragg grating (FBG) fiber sensing. However, for robust localization, at least two EMT sensors are required to be attached to each multicore fiber. This may make the catheter overly complex and fragile. Furthermore, the inability of multicore FBG fibers to distinguish between twist-induced strain and bend-induced strain impacts shape sensing accuracy. This article proposes a new approach offering a precise shape sensing method that is robust against torsional twists and exploits symmetry and geometry to compensate for limited sensing information. The proposed approach originates from the observation that many interventional procedures employ a plurality of concentric instruments. By distributing sensors over these instruments, the complexity per instrument can be kept acceptable. The proposed sensor fusion approach ensures robust and superior shape reconstruction. Experiments in 3-D with ground truth generated by a stereo vision system have been done and yielded promising results. With the great emphasis from the international standard-setting community on the so-called supra-harmonics emissions (2-150 kHz), there are increasing research efforts in this noise level identification, measurement, standard setting and mitigation. The periodic variable switching frequency PWM method, which is known as VSFPWM, can reshape the generated output harmonics spectrum of the grid-connected PWM converter, leading to a significantly lower harmonics peaks, thus keeping the harmonics emission strictly below the harmonics emission standards e.g., IEEE519 & IEC-61000 series. In this study, the tensile and bending properties of silk fibre composites using three (0, 90) woven fabrics with different architectures are investigated. The tensile results show that the silk composites can achieve high strain to failure (more than 20%) and toughness (up to 13 MJ/m3), which can be further manipulated based on the architecture of the fabrics, thus providing more tailored properties and design freedom in applications. XCT and SEM characterization are used to investigate and explain the outstanding toughness of these composites. In tension, a high density of microcracking was observed away from the failed location, which could explain the intrinsic high ductility and energy absorption of silk fibre composites by means of damage spreading throughout its volume in contrast to inherently brittle materials. In bending, significantly lower properties were observed with the more striking being the strain at failure reaching only 30% of the tensile value, thus limiting the potential of silk fibres in bending-dominated loading configurations. XCT revealed that the lower performance is due to failure on the compressive side of the composites, where a clear characteristic kink-band was observed in all composites subjected to bending, while there was no visible damage on the side under tension. The use of refrigerants has been continuously increasing in thermal control systems employed in residential premises, offices, storage, process operations and many more. Widely used refrigerants such as R-410A have become a target for regulations to prohibit their use because of environmental issues. R-410A is a blend of R-32 (Difluoromethane) and R-125 (Pentafluoroethane). Because of high global warming potential (GWP) of R-125, it has become a target for removal from R-410A and reuse. An additional issue is the recovery of the refrigerant from current and decommissioned thermal control units. Optical fiber-based shape sensing is gaining popularity in cardiac catheterization lately. Typically, these procedures are taking place under the guidance of fluoroscopy. However, fluoroscopy has several disadvantages. Thanks to fiber optic shape sensing and Electromagnetic Tracking (EMT), the 3D catheter shape can now be tracked in real-time without the need for fluoroscopy. Traditional optical fiber and EMT-based shape tracking methods have the drawback of the highest shape sensing error at the tip. The information offered by the EMT sensors is used mainly to localize the estimated shape in a fixed coordinate frame. In this letter, a novel approach for tracking the catheter is introduced to address the aforementioned problem. The catheter shape is directly reconstructed in the EMT coordinate frame by approximating the catheter shape by a number of Bézier curves while taking into account the curvatures measured by the optical fiber. Both 2D and 3D shape sensing experiments are conducted. The efficiency of the profiling side-channel analysis can be significantly improved with machine learning techniques. Although powerful, a fundamental machine learning limitation of being data-hungry received little attention in the side-channel community. In practice, the maximum number of leakage traces that evaluators/attackers can obtain is constrained by the scheme requirements or the limited accessibility of the target. Even worse, various countermeasures in modern devices increase the conditions on the profiling size to break the target. This work demonstrates a practical approach to dealing with the lack of profiling traces. Instead of learning from a one-hot encoded label, transferring the labels to their distribution can significantly speed up the convergence of guessing entropy. By studying the relationship between all possible key candidates, we propose a new metric, denoted Label Correlation (LC), to evaluate the generalization ability of the profiling model. Externally bonded (EB) carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) is widely used in structural strengthening and retrofitting. Premature debonding of the FRP severely limits the efficiency of CFRP utilization. The application of CRRP anchorage system offers a solution to the debonding problem. However, the understanding of damage mode identification of this combined system still remains elusive. Acoustic emission (AE) technique is employed to identify the damage mode of this CFRP anchorage system, due to its high sensitivity and the ability to detect damage in real-time. The objective of the current study is to identify the failure mechanisms of CFRP-strengthened beam by applying advanced pattern recognition techniques to the collected AE data. Firstly, four-point test of CFRP-strengthened beam was carried out until failure with simultaneous recording of AE signals. Then, correlation analysis was adopted to select the AE characteristic parameters, and principal component analysis (PCA) was used for dimensionality reduction. Lastly, the AE signals of the CFRP-strengthened beam was clustered to track the evolutionary behavior of the different damage modes by Gaussian mixture model (GMM) algorithm. Three main damage modes of CFRP-strengthened beam were identified by GMM clustering: concrete cracking, debonding of CFRP sheet and fracture of CFRP sheet. A high moisture content of waste activated sludge (WAS) associated with a low calorific value needs to be deeply dried towards self-supporting incineration. On the other hand, thermal energy with low temperature exchanged from treated effluent has great potential for drying sludge. Unfortunately, low-temperature drying of sludge seems to be low in efficiency and long in drying time. For this reason, some agricultural biomass was added into WAS to improve the drying efficiency. The drying performance and sludge properties were analyzed and evaluated with this study. Experimental results demonstrated that wheat straw was the best in enhancing the drying performance. With only 20 % (DS/DS) of crushed wheat straw added, the average drying rate achieved up to 0.20 g water/g DS·min, much higher than 0.13 g water/g DS·min of the raw WAS. The drying time to the targeted moisture content (63 %) (for self-supporting incineration) was shortened to only 12 min, much lower than 21 min of the raw WAS. The analysis revealed that wheat straw could reduce the specific resistance of filtration (SRF) and increase the sludge filterability (X). Also, the sludge rheology, particle size distribution and SEM images could conclude that agricultural biomass played a positive role in skeleton builders, forming a mesh-like structure in sludge flocs. The Multi-modal Information based Speech Processing (MISP) challenge aims to extend the application of signal processing technology in specific scenarios by promoting the research into wake-up words, speaker diarization, speech recognition, and other technologies. The MISP2022 challenge has two tracks: 1) audio-visual speaker diarization (AVSD), aiming to solve "who spoken when" using both audio and visual data; 2) a novel audio-visual diarization and recognition (AVDR) task that focuses on addressing "who spoken what when" with audio-visual speaker diarization results. Both tracks focus on the Chinese language, and use far-field audio and video in real home-tv scenarios: 2-6 people communicating each other with TV noise in the background. This paper introduces the dataset, track settings, and baselines of the MISP2022 challenge. Efficient CO2 utilization in the thermochemical conversion of biomass plays an important role in creating a future low-carbon economy. This study attempts to explore the CO2-assisted chemical looping gasification and co-gasification process of lignocellulosic biomass components (hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin) with iron oxide oxygen carriers using thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis. Three different iron oxide oxygen carrier-to-biomass (O/B) ratios were taken into account to deeply understand the thermal degradation characteristics of individual components (O/B ratio: 0) and their blending with iron oxide oxygen carriers (O/B ratio: 0.5 and 1). Meanwhile, the reduction characteristics of three major biomass components were also investigated in terms of X-ray diffraction (XRD), synergistic interaction, and reduction degree. Experimental results suggest that the existence of iron oxide oxygen carriers could accelerate the reaction kinetics under the reactive CO2 environment, arising from the competitive relationship between the direct reduction reaction by char in biomass and the Boudouard reaction at high temperatures (600–950 °C). Interestingly, the reoxidation behavior of the reduced iron oxide is observed at high temperatures, especially for lignin. Among all the tested biomass materials, their ability to reduce iron oxide oxygen carriers under the CO2 atmosphere follows the order of biomass mixture (1:1:1 wt%)>lignin>xylan>cellulose. We aim to increase the ability of coupled phase oscillators to maintain synchronization when the system is affected by stochastic disturbances. We model the disturbances by Gaussian noise and use the mean first hitting time when the state hits the boundary of a secure domain, that is a subset of the basin of attraction, to measure synchronization stability. Based on the invariant probability distribution of a system of phase oscillators subject to Gaussian disturbances, we propose an optimization method to increase the mean first hitting time and, thus, increase synchronization stability. In this method, a new metric for synchronization stability is defined as the probability of the state being absent from the secure domain, which reflects the impact of all the system parameters and the strength of disturbances. Furthermore, by this new metric, one may identify those edges that may lead to desynchronization with a high risk. A case study shows that the mean first hitting time is dramatically increased after solving corresponding optimization problems, and vulnerable edges are effectively identified. Patient-specific implants offer a host of benefits over their generic counterparts. Nonetheless, the design and optimization of these components present several technical challenges, among them being the need to ensure their insertability into the host bone tissue. This presents a significant challenge due to the tight-fitting nature of the bone-implant interface. This paper presents a novel insertability metric designed to efficiently assess whether a rigid body can be inserted into a tight-fitting cavity, without interference. In contrast to existing solutions, the metric is fully differentiable and can be incorporated as a design constraint into shape optimization routines. By exploiting the tight-fitting condition, the problem of planning an interference-free insertion path is reformulated as the search for a single interference-free movement, starting from the inserted configuration. We prove that if there exists any outward movement for which no interference is indicated, then the body can be fully extracted from or, equivalently, inserted into the cavity. This formulation is extremely efficient and highly robust with respect to the complexity of the geometry. We demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method by applying it to the optimization of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) designs for insertability, subject to various design requirements. Purpose: Intraventricular blood flow dynamics are associated with cardiac function. Accurate, noninvasive, and easy assessments of hemodynamic quantities (such as velocity, vortex, and pressure) could be an important addition to the clinical diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases. However, the complex time-varying flow brings many challenges to the existing noninvasive image-based hemodynamic assessments. The development of reliable techniques and analysis tools is essential for the application of hemodynamic biomarkers in clinical practice. Methods: In this study, a time-resolved particle tracking method, Shake-the-Box, was applied to reconstruct the flow in a realistic left ventricle (LV) silicone model with biological valves. Based on the obtained velocity, 4D pressure field was calculated using a Poisson equation-based pressure solver. Furthermore, flow analysis by proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the 4D velocity field has been performed. Results: As a result of the Shake-the-Box algorithm, we have extracted: (i) particle positions, (ii) particle tracks, and finally, (iii) 4D velocity fields. From the latter, the temporal evolution of the 3D pressure field during the full cardiac cycle was obtained. The obtained maximal pressure difference extracted along the base-to-apex was about 2.7 mmHg, which is in good agreement with those reported in vivo. The POD analysis results showed a clear picture of different scale of vortices in the pulsatile LV flow, together with their time-varying information and corresponding kinetic energy content. To reconstruct 95% of the kinetic energy of the LV flow, only the first six POD modes would be required, leading to significant data reduction. Conclusions: This work demonstrated Shake-the-Box is a promising technique to accurately reconstruct the left ventricle flow field in vitro. Most of the existing path planning methods of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are static. This paper proposes a new methodology for the path planning of a fleet of AGVs to improve the flexibility, robustness, and scalability of the AGV system. We mathematically describe the transport process as a dynamical system using an ad hoc mixed logical dynamical (MLD) model. Based on our MLD model, model predictive control is proposed to determine the collision paths dynamically, and the corresponding optimization problem is formulated as 0-1 integer linear programming. An alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based decomposition technique is then developed to coordinate the AGVs and reduce the computational burden, aiming for real-time decisions. Alcohol oxidases (AOxs) catalyze the aerobic oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl products (aldehydes or ketones), producing only H2O2 as the byproduct. The majority of known AOxs, however, have a strong preference for small, primary alcohols, limiting their broad applicability, e.g., in the food industry. To broaden the product scope of AOxs, we performed structure-guided enzyme engineering of a methanol oxidase from Phanerochaete chrysosporium (PcAOx). The substrate preference was extended from methanol to a broad range of benzylic alcohols by modifying the substrate binding pocket. A mutant (PcAOx-EFMH) with four substitutions exhibited improved catalytic activity toward benzyl alcohols with increased conversion and kcat toward the benzyl alcohol from 11.3 to 88.9% and from 0.5 to 2.6 s-1, respectively. During the process of collision avoidance, especially in a multi-ship encounter situation, the dynamic interactions among individual ships impose a significant impact on collision avoidance decision-making. It is imperative, therefore, that collision avoidance decisions are formulated with a comprehensive consideration of not only the current direct collision conflict but also the potential conflicts due to planned collision avoidance actions. To address this requirement, this paper proposes a dynamic conflict cluster detection method for collision avoidance decision-making in multi-ship encounters. The involved ships are clustered into stable temporal-dependent ship conflict groups taking into account both conflict connectivity and the potential spatiotemporal interactions originating from planned collision avoidance actions. The conflict cluster detection model is implemented within a framework to achieve hierarchical coordinated collision avoidance decision-making. By a simulation experiment of an 11-ship encounter, the proposed method successfully discerns the ships with conflicts and provides feasible collision avoidance decisions. Compared to the non-cluster collision avoidance methods, the proposed method generates the results with acceptable deviating distance and number of collision avoidance actions at minimum computation load.
