An essay is presented in which the author discussed his transformation from being an Australian writer to becoming a Canadian writer and how the death of poet Richard Outram by hypothermia is captured in the poem "Canadian January Night," by Alden Nowlan. The author relates his writing career in Sydney, New South Wales and how he met Outram and novelist Ronald Wright. Also mentioned is the attempt of several Australian writers who live in other countries to write Australian historical fiction.
