Lui, Wolfgang Lotz, grand, blond, athletique, ancien officier SS selon la rumeur et son epouse, Waltraud, germanique a souhait. A eux deux, ils surent conquerir la haute societe egyptienne, et generaux, ministres, hommes d’affaires avaient table ouverte chez eux… En 1965, ils sont arretes : Wolfgang Lotz n’est autre qu’un agent du Mossad ! Il s’agit sans aucun doute d’une des operations les plus reussies des services secrets israeliens, qui leur ont permis d’obtenir des informations inestimables sur les forces militaires des pays arabes et sur les armes secretes developpees par des ingenieurs allemands. Des informations qui ont pese lourd dans la balance pendant la guerre des 6 jours qui opposa Israel et ses voisins en 1967. Conscient de la valeur inestimable de ses espions et du travail accompli en sa faveur, Israel echangea les epoux Lotz contre 5000 prisonniers egyptiens. Voici un cas unique d’autobiographie par un maitre espion d’Israel, un recit souvent rocambolesque mais toujours veridique. Date de premiere edition : 1973.

A mobilizable cloning vector was constructed from defined fragments to serve as a suicide plasmid for site-directed mutagenesis. The new vector, pKOK4, closely resembles plasmid pBR325. However, the inverted duplication existing in the latter was not introduced. The useful cloning sites of pBR325 ( Eco RI, Hin dIII, Eco RV, Bam HI, Sal I, Pst I and Pvu I) were retained and are located in one of the three resistance markers, Ap R , Cm R or Tc R , respectively. Also, in pKOK4 the Cm R gene retains its own promoter. The mob site of plasmid RP4 was introduced as a 760-bp fragment at a defined location. The mobilization frequency of pKOK4 within Escherichia coli strains is approx. 4 × 10 −2 per recipient cell. The size of pKOK4, deduced from the construction, is 6368 bp. We used pKOK4 for site-directed mutagenesis of hup -specific DNA from Rhizobium leguminosarum B10. Integration of the vector could be distinguished reliably from marker exchange by screening for the antibiotic resistance(s) of the plasmid. This reduced the number of clones to be retested by colony and Southern hybridization to approx. 1% of the original number. Of these, almost 70% contained the desired marker exchange.

It was in fifteenth-century Florence that Brunelleschi`s buildings and Alberti`s treatise first established the principles of Italian Renaissance architecture in practice and theory. This classic survey of Italian Renaissance architecture ranges from the erection of Brunelleschi`s dome for the Florence Cathedral to the works of Bramante and Leonardo. This book was first published in 1974 as part one of a volume entitled Architecture in Italy, 1400-1600. Part two, by Heydenreich`s pupil Wolfgang Lotz, is being reissued as a separate volume. Heydenreich`s text is now accompanied by a critical introduction and updated bibliography by Paul Davies.

Hypophyseal responses to LH-releasing hormone (LH-RH) were studied in ovariectomized rats, pre-treated once with 50 μg oestradiol-3-benzoate alone or in combination with 25 mg progesterone either 16, 24, 48 or 72 h before the administration of LH-RH. The highest serum gonadotrophin increase was detected in ovariectomized rats pre-treated with oestrogen 48 h before the LH-RH injection. The serum LH concentration change in intact male rats was markedly lower in terms of order of magnitude than in ovariectomized, oestradiol-3-benzoate, progesterone-treated rats ("O. Oe. P."-rats). These latter test animals showed the maximal increase of serum LH concentration, depending on the dose of LH-RH, after 10 to 25 min and that of FSH after 40 min. The dose-response curves for LH release in "O. Oe. P."-rats were linear for short (10 and 15 min) and sigmoid for longer time intervals (20, 30 and 40 min) between LH-RH injection and sacrifice. The possible reasons for the difference in both magnitude and time-lapse for maximal increase of serum LH and FSH concentration, the influence of steroid pre-treatment and the variation of the time-course of serum LH concentration, depending on the dose of LH-RH, are discussed.

Four analogues of LH-RH modified in position 5 have been synthesized using either classical procedures or the solid phase method. The gonadotropin-releasing activities were determined by radioimmunological measurements of LH and FSH in vivo and in vitro and the immunoreactivities by a specific LH-RH radioimmunoassay (RIA). Bacterial strain 16-12 was isolated from the root nodules of lupines and was found to be mitomycin C-inducible for the production of a bacteriophage (“16-12-1”) with a long noncontractile tail. The phage was found to attach with a fork-like terminal tail structure to the pili of strain 16-12. In addition, it was also found adsorbed to the bacterial cell poles. It is suggested that phage 16-12-1 may be pilus dependent.

A lacZ gene without a promoter, but containing its ribosome-binding site, was cloned next to the kanamycin-resistance (KmR) gene of plasmid pUC4K, yielding a lacZ-KmR cassette. From the resulting plasmid, pKOK5, the lacZ-KmR cassette was recloned by means of BamHI into plasmid pKOK4, a mobilizable derivative of pBR322 which mediates ampicillin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline resistance. The lacZ-KmR cassette can be excised from pKOK5 or pKOK6 by digestion with BamHI, SalI or PstI. It can be used for insertion mutagenesis by ligation of the cassette to target DNA that has been linearized by one of these enzymes. Insertions can be selected by the KmR phenotype and mapped by digestion, e.g., with PstI and SalI. The orientation of the inserted cassette can be determined by digestion, e.g., with EcoRI or HindIII. Within the lacZ-KmR cassette, the transcription of the lacZ and the KmR genes are directed towards each other, and the two genes are separated by the bidirectionally active terminator from phage fd. In Escherichia coli, no transcription emanating from the cassette was detected. Transcription within DNA mutagenized by the cassette can be monitored by the promoterless lacZ gene. The lacZ-KmR cassette is currently used by us for the site-directed mutagenesis of hydrogen uptake gene-specific DNA from Rhizobium leguminosarum B10.

Seven decades have passed since the publication of Heinrich Woelfflin's Renaissance and Baroque, the first attempt to define the styles of 16th century architecture in Italy. Woelfflin's unique combination of felicitous generalization and acute analysis make his book still indispensable for the student of the period; moreover, his is one of the few books written by art historians which are understood and appreciated by unspecialized readers. Impressive though Woelfflin's definitions were, they turned out to be too broad to do justice to the complexity of the Cinquecento. They were first enriched, as it were, and then replaced by a real maze of subsidiary and more refined terms, such as Late Renaissance, Proto- and Early Baroque, Classicism, Early, High and Late Mannerism. It may sufficiently illustrate the puzzling situation which confronts us that the Art Bulletin of 1935 carried an article entitled “The First Baroque Church in Rome” and that this very church, namely Il Gesu, appears as a mannerist build...

Eight strains of Rhizobium lupini bacteriophages newly isolated from compost soil were studied in the electron microscope. The phage particles investigated had either long contractile, long non-contractile, or short non-contractile tails. The wedge-shaped appearance of short phage tails is discussed.

Using the formula recently proposed, electron-impact ionization cross-sections for single ionization from the ground state of free atoms up toZ=108 are given for energies of the impact electron between threshold and 1 keV. The probable error is estimated to be approximately\(_{ - 30}^{ + 40} \% \), but near threshold the error is larger and no fine structures are accounted for.

A toroidal theta-pinch discharge with superposed non-helical hexapole field is investigated. The characteristic data of the discharge are: major diameter 52 cm, minor inner diameter of the vacuum vessel 6 cm, maximum magnetic field between 10 and 21 kG, rise time (quarter-cycle) 3.0 μs, maximum temperature between 40 and 100 eV, maximum density between 1 and 3×1016 cm−3, beta-values between 0.3 and 1. The plasma confinement times are determined by measuring particle density, temperature and plasma radius. The confinement times are compared with those of models which account for cusp losses, resistive losses, and Bohm diffusion. Measured confinement times are consistent with those expected from cusp losses with a cusp slit-width of one ion gyro-radius. Above electron temperatures of 20 eV, resistive losses are negligible. Bohm diffusion is not consistent with measurements, but is of the same order of magnitude.

An empirical formula with three free parameters is given for the representation of cross-sections for single ionization of atoms and ions from the ground state by electron-impact. Almost all experimental results can be approximated by this formula within 10% over the whole energy range between threshold and 10 keV; all experimental results can be approximated within experimental error. The formula proposed is not suitable to reproduce the exact contour of fine structures in the ionization cross-section curve.

JACOPO SANSOVINO was forty-one years old when he arrived in Venice in 1527. His great Venetian buildings, the Library of San Marco (fig. 1) and the Palazzo Cornaro (fig. 2), stem from the thirties and forties. It has often been observed that the monumentality and grandeur of Sansovino's Venetian style have no antecedents in Venetian architecture, but little has been done to investigate the sources of the artist's style. Yet fifty-year-old architects of the sixteenth century were usually mature and welldefined artistic personalities.1 This paper, then, has a twofold purpose. It will try to characterize Sansovino's ambience during his early years in Florence and Rome, emphasizing the structures with which Sansovino is known or can be surmised to have

The recent publication by Rudolf Berliner of a preparatory drawing by Antonio Gentili for a silvergilt crucifix in St. Peter's, Rome, has added an important new element to our knowledge of one of the outstanding monuments of the goldsmith's art in the Late Renaissance.1 However, the history of the piece would seem to be rather more complex than Dr. Berliner suggests, at least in its initial stage. The following remarks may help to clarify this aspect of the problem.

Bacteriophage 7-7-1 is shown to adsorb specifically to the complex flagella of its host Rhizobium lupini H13-3. Deflagellation of motile cells before the addition of phage leads to a complete inhibition of phage propagation for at least 60 min. Among phage-resistant mutants, many non-motile (mot) and non-flagellated (fla) derivatives of R. lupini H13-3 have been selected. Electron microscopic observations indicate that bacteriophage 7-7-1 attaches with its short tail fibres to the conspicuous helical filament of R. lupini flagells. This attachment is reversible; irreversible phage adsorption takes place at the flagellar base. It is postulated that phage 7-7-1 moves along the rotating flagellum towards a final receptor next to the insertion site of the flagellum, where tail contraction and injection of phage nucleic acid occurs.

A strategy is described for monitoring pea-nodulating bacteria of Rhizobium leguminosarum B10 (Nod+, Fix+, HUP+) without prior in vitro gene manipulation. The rhizobia are released into the soil of a selected test plot (having a low level of resident Hup+ R.leguminosarum bacteria) via sowing of B10-inoculated pea seeds. Seeds of the original host of strain B10, Pisum sativum. var. Poneka, are used for the release experiment and for further nodulation assays. Rhizobia isolated from sampled root nodules of pea plants grown in the test plot will be screened for the following properties: pattern of antibiotic resistance, presence of hup-specific DNA, UV-inducible bactericidal agent, plasmid pattern.

Bacteriophage 16-6-12 of Rhizobium lupini has a long, non-contractile tail and a head which is hexagonal in outline. The tail is 140 nm in length, 11 nm in diameter, and carries a short term fiber. Analysis of the tail structure by optical diffraction indicates that it is of the helical "stacked disc" type. After phenol-extraction from purified particles, the DNA of phage 16-6-12 can circularize in vitro. No significant difference in contour length was observed between the linear (14.34 plus or minus 0.28 mum) and circular (14.44 plus or minus 0.24 mum) forms of molecules. After partial denaturation with alkali an AT-GC-map was constructed, which shows an asymmetric distribution of AT- and GC-rich regions. It is concluded that this phage DNA can circularize due to the presence of cohesive ends and that it is not circularly permuted.

A number of centrally active benzodiazepines lowered baseline serum prolactin concentrations after oral administration to male rats. The increase of circulating prolactin levels elicited by oral administration of various neuroleptic agents was also reduced by prior or simultaneous oral administration of several benzodiazepines in a dose-dependent manner. Since both effects were prevented by simultaneous administration of the benzodiazepine antagonist Ro 15-1788 they are probably mediated by central benzodiazepine receptors which interfere with aminergic mechanisms governing serum prolactin.

A bacterium is called lysogenic if it has the latent potential to produce bacteriophage, i.e. if it harbors and reproduces the genome of the phage (“prophage”) along with that of the bacterium. Lysogeny is detected by the fact that this potential is occasionally expressed, so that any culture produced by growing the progeny of a single lysogenic cell will contain some phage (CAMPBELL, 1968).

By electron microscopy and melting of the DNA of some bacteriophages from the soil bacterium Rhizobium lupini , it was found that molecular weights range between 27 and 50 Mdaltons and GC contents between 53 and 62%. All DNAs studied are linear; one has exposed single-stranded terminals. Partial heat denaturation of two phage DNA permitted mapping of AT-rich sites within unique nucleotide sequences. The maps are asymmetric with respect to the midpoints of the DNA.

Bacterial strain 16-3 spontaneously produces a bacteriocin which inhibits the growth of closely related strain 16-2. Both strains were newly isolated from root nodules of lupines and probably belong to the species Rhizobium lupini. Production of infectious progeny of newly isolated virulent phage 16-2-4 in strain 16-2 is inhibited completely if complexes are bacteriocin-treated during the first half of the latent period. Treatment begun during the second half leads to premature lysis of complexes and inactivates only those progeny phages which were not yet fully matured at the moment of the particle-induced lysis. Examination by electron microscope of the bacteriocin enrichment revealed the presence of particles 123 nm in length which resemble the tails of T-even bacteriophages. Since the particles sediment together with the bactericidal activity in the sucrose gradient and adsorb specifically to bacteriocin-sensitive cells, it is concluded that they are identical with the bactericidal agent. The particles are not found attached to phage heads and cannot self-propagate; they are regarded as incomplete and are named INCO particles. INCO particles consist of a core enveloped by a contractile sheath. One end of the sheath is connected to a baseplate to which six fibers, each 32 nm in length, are attached. These connect the baseplate of an adsorbing particle to the cell surface. Since INCo cores are probably empty, it is concluded that specific adsorption of the particles to the bacterial surface is sufficient to inactive sensitive cells irreversibly.

Binding energies (ionization energies) of all subshells are given for free atoms up to Z = 108. X-ray data for solids have been combined with spectroscopic data and work functions, and have been smoothed, interpolated, and extrapolated.

Binding energies of electrons in all subshells of free atoms and of ions of all ionization stages of the elements hydrogen through zinc (Z = 30) are given with full regard to experimental values, in the sense that experimental values are preferred in all cases of doubt.

A complete set of ionization potentials of all ionization stages is given for the elements hydrogen through zinc (Z = 30). The ionization potentials are calculated along isoelectronic sequences with full regard to experimental values in the sense that experimental values are preferred in all cases of doubt. Along sequences that are well established experimentally the difference to the next higher species is calculated by interpolation or extrapolation of the second differences and the third differences. Sequences that are not so well established experimentally are calculated by interpolation or extrapolation of the difference to the same ionization stage of one of the better-known sequences. Similarities in the periodic table are taken into account.

Binding energies of electrons in the next inner subshell are given for most ionization stages of the elements boron through zinc (Z=30). The binding energies of (inner) 2s and 3s electrons are calculated along isoelectronic sequences with full regard to experimental values, in the sense that experimental values are preferred in all cases of doubt. Similarities in the periodic table are taken into account.
