We present guidelines to estimate the effect of electrostatic repulsion in sedimenting dilute particle suspensions. Our results are based on combined Langevin dynamics and lattice Boltzmann simulations for a range of particle radii, Debye lengths and particle concentrations. They show a simple relationship between the slope $K$ of the concentration-dependent sedimentation velocity and the range $\chi$ of the electrostatic repulsion normalized by the average particle-particle distance. When $\chi \to 0$, the particles are too far away from each other to interact electrostatically and $K=6.55$ as predicted by the theory of Batchelor. As $\chi$ increases, $K$ likewise increases as if the particle radius increased in proportion to $\chi$ up to a maximum around $\chi=0.4$. Over the range $\chi=0.4-1$, $K$ relaxes exponentially to a concentration-dependent constant consistent with known results for ordered particle distributions. Meanwhile the radial distribution function transitions from a disordered gas-like to a liquid-like form. Power law fits to the concentration-dependent sedimentation velocity similarly yield a simple master curve for the exponent as a function of $\chi$, with a step-like transition from 1 to 1/3 centered around $\chi = 0.6$., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Reference enzymes allow PET hydrolases and protein engineering approaches to be compared across different substrates, their properties and reaction conditions. Using this concept, semi-rational protein design led to an improved PET hydrolase variant.

Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) is a well-known, versatile and scalable technique for the separation of molecules according to their hydrodynamic size in solution as well as for the determination of molecular weight distributions of polymers. In this paper we demonstrate and generalize the applicability of SEC to the classification and characterization of multimodal distributions of nanoparticles over a broad size range. After calibration with gold standards from 5 nm to 80 nm, the calibration curve is used to determine the particle size distributions (PSDs) of the standards which are in agreement with comprehensive nanoparticle size analysis by analytical ultracentrifugation. Universal calibration curves independent of the core material and surface functionality can be constructed if the pore diameter of the stationary phase exceeds the particle diameter by a factor of 2-3. Mixtures of gold standards are separated by SEC and evaluated in terms of peak resolution and size-dependent separation curves depending on how well the individual peaks are resolved. Baseline separation of a multimodal mixture is observed and its PSD is determined. Mixtures can be fractionated into coarse and fine fractions with nm precision at different switching times of the fraction collector. Our study demonstrates the strength of SEC to classify multimodal PSDs as well as to accurately determine size distributions of complex nanoparticle dispersions over a broad size range.

One of the outcomes of electrospray ionization is the size distribution of the droplets, which determines, together with the solvent composition and the source gas temperature, the minimum distance from the sprayer tip to the mass spectrometer inlet and therefore the ion transfer efficiency. Even more importantly, the average number of analyte molecules and, if present, contaminant species per droplet depend on the drop size. Consequently, the drop size distribution is a key parameter in nonspecific ion clustering in solution and ion suppression. The finding that small droplet sizes improve the mass spectral quality led to the development of nanoelectrospray sources, which dispense liquid flow rates below 0.1 μL/min and can generate drops with diameters smaller than 100 nm. However, current discussions on the effect of drop size on ion formation pathways and efficiencies remain qualitative because the exact drop size distributions are unknown. Here, we show that ion mobility-classified mass spectrometry of raffinose cluster ions allows us to determine very precisely the drop size distribution generated by the electrospray source in positive- and negative-ion modes. Based on the derived drop size distributions, we can quantitatively predict nonspecific ion clustering and can extract accurate probabilities for emission of species from parent drops upon Coulomb fission.

Hypothesis Interaction of cellular membranes with biointerfaces is of vital importance for a number of medical devices and implants. Adhesiveness of these surfaces and cells is often regulated by depositing a layer of bovine serum albumin (BSA) or other protein coatings. However, anomalously large separations between phospholipid membranes and the biointerfaces in various conditions and buffers have been observed, which could not be understood using available theoretical arguments. Methods Using the Lifshitz theory, we here evaluate the distance-dependent Hamaker coefficient describing the dispersion interaction between a biointerface and a membrane to understand the relative positioning of two surfaces. Our theoretical modeling is supported by experiments where the biointerface is represented by a glass substrate with deposited BSA and protein layers. These biointerfaces are allowed to interact with giant unilamellar vesicles decorated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) using PEG lipids to mimic cellular membranes and their pericellular coat. Results We demonstrate that careful treatment of the van der Waals interactions is critical for explaining the lack of adhesiveness of the membranes with protein-decorated biointerfaces. We show that BSA alone indeed passivates the glass, but depositing an additional protein layer on the surface BSA, or producing multiple layers of proteins and BSA results in repulsive dispersion forces responsible for 100 nm large equilibrium separations between the two surfaces.

Blending polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) with polycarbonate (PC) has been the focus of attention for some time in order to combine thermo-chemical with mechanical resistance. The right compounding of the two polymers is a particular challenge, since phase boundaries between PBT and PC lead to coalescence during melting, and thus to unwanted segregation within the composite material. Amorphization of the semi-crystalline PBT would significantly improve the blending of the two polymers, which is why specific miscibility aids are needed for this purpose. Recent research has focused on the functionalization of polymers with shape-anisotropic glass particles. The advantage of those results from their two-dimensional shape, which not only improves the mechanical properties but are also suspected to act as miscibility aids, as they could catalyze transesterification or act as crystallization modifier. This work presents a process route for the production of PBT-PC blends via co-comminution and an in-situ additivation of the polymer blend particles with anisotropic glass flakes to adjust the crystallinity and therefore enhance the miscibility of the polymers.

The stability of emulsions requires the fast formation of viscoelastic interfaces between water and oil phases. In double emulsions, two surfactant types (hydrophilic and lipophilic) are present and two interfacial films are involved. Understanding cooperative adsorption of these surfactants and its implication on properties of water/oil/water interfacial films will enable replacing the empirical methodologies used in designing double emulsion systems with a knowledge-based approach.The distribution of surfactants between the water/oil interfaces was investigated using single droplet diffusion experiments and simulation of equilibrium surfactant density profiles. The stability of the interfaces against coalescence was characterized by dye transport in a leach cell and coalescence time of single droplets in a model experiment. The conformation of the surfactants at an interface was then examined via surface rheology, sum frequency generation spectroscopy, and dissipative particle dynamics simulation.Two selected hydrophilic surfactants combined with a lipophilic surfactant induce very different properties at water/oil interfaces and different dye release behaviour from their corresponding double emulsions. Competitive adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate and lipophilic surfactant results in the improvement of encapsulation efficiency, elasticity of the interface, and resistance against coalescence due to the intercalation of surfactant alkyl chains into the oil chains.

Analytical centrifugation is a versatile technique for the quantitative characterization of colloidal systems including colloidal stability. The recent developments in data acquisition and evaluation allow the accurate determination of particle size, shape anisotropy and particle density. High precision analytical centrifugation is in particular suited for the study of particle interactions and concentration-dependent sedimentation coefficients. We present a holistic approach for the quantitative determination of sedimentation non-idealityviaanalytical centrifugation for polydisperse, plain and amino-functionalized silica particles spanning over one order of magnitude in particle size between 100 nm and 1200 nm. These systems typically behave as neutral hard spheres as predicted by auxiliary lattice Boltzmann simulations. The extent of electrostatic interactions and their impact on sedimentation non-ideality can be quantified by the repulsion range, which is the ratio of the Debye length and the average interparticle distance. Experimental access to the repulsion range is provided through conductivity measurements. With the experimental repulsion range at hand, we estimate the effect of polydispersity on concentration-dependent sedimentation properties through a combination of lattice Boltzmann and Brownian dynamics simulations. Finally, we determine the concentration-dependent sedimentation properties of charge-stabilized, fluorescently-labeled silica particles with a nominal particle size of 30 nm and reduced interparticle distance, hence an elevated repulsion range. Overall, our results demonstrate how the influence of hard-sphere type and electrostatic interactions can be quantified when probing sedimentation non-ideality of particulate systems using analytical centrifugation even for systems exhibiting moderate sample heterogeneity and complex interactions.

Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) are benign and low-cost materials, overcoming the limitations of toxicity and high costs of other semiconductors such as CuInGa(S,Se)2, cadmium and lead chalcogenides, and Pb-based perovskites widely used in photovoltaic and thermoelectric applications. In order to shed light on the formation mechanism of CZTS nanoparticles using anisole as the solvent, oleylamine as the organic ligand, carbon disulphide as the sulphur source and Zn(NO3)2·6H2O as the Zn(II) precursor, we follow the conversion of binary sulphides formed in situ under solvothermal conditions into quaternary phases. Besides a careful microstructural characterization of the as-synthesized materials by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy (TEM and HRTEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy at micron- and nano-scale, we study the evolution of particle surface properties by X-ray-photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that CZTS particles form already during the early stages of the reaction, most probably through a nucleation and growth mechanism. In parallel, a comparably slower growth mechanism is observed that involves recrystallization between the binary phases, without evidence of ternary phase formation.

Carbon dots (CDs) are strongly fluorescent advanced materials that are promising for applications in bio-imaging, sensors or luminescent displays. One of the most-widely used class of CDs is synthesized via an aqueous, bottom-up technique starting from citric acid (CA) and an amino-precursor. Very high fluorescence quantum yields (QY) are reported for the resulting CDs. The as-synthesized raw suspensions, however, are crude mixtures of many components: bare carbon cores, carbon cores functionalized with fluorophores, freely floating molecular fluorophores, and several other by-products. In this study, we synthesized CDs from CA and amino acid cysteine (Cys) hydrothermally and demonstrate a complete separation of all components by means of two step gradient chromatography. In the first step, the separation was carried out on a normal-pressure preparative silica-gel column to get sufficient amounts of material to investigate structure and optical properties of the collected fractions. This preparative gradient elution method enabled us to separate moderately-fluorescent CDs from freely floating molecular fluorophores, polymeric fluorophores and CDs with built-in fluorophores. Here, we evidenced that amorphous CDs co-exist with crystalline CDs in one and the same suspension and showed that the amount of crystalline CDs increases with the synthesis temperature. In the second step, we turned to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to further improve and optimize the efficiency of purification and automate it. Via HPLC, we were able to well-separate of up to six components. Within this work, we laid the foundation for CD purification with the highest possible purity for aqueous, bottom-up synthesized CDs and quantified the true quantum yield of CDs.

Mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) have demonstrated promising properties for the local delivery of therapeutically active ions with the aim to improve their osteogenic properties. Manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) ions have already shown promising pro-osteogenic properties. Therefore, the concentration-dependent impact of MBGNs (composition in mol%: 70 SiO2 , 30 CaO) and MBGNs containing 5 mol% of either Mn, Zn, or Cu (composition in mol%: 70 SiO2 , 25 CaO, 5 MnO/ZnO/CuO) on the viability and osteogenic differentiation of human marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSCs) was assessed in this study. Mn-doped MBGNs (5Mn-MBGNs) showed a small "therapeutic window" with a dose-dependent negative impact on cell viability but increasing pro-osteogenic features alongside increasing Mn concentrations. Due to a constant release of Zn, 5Zn-MBGNs showed good cytocompatibility and upregulated the expression of genes encoding for relevant members of the osseous extracellular matrix during the later stages of cultivation. In contrast to all other groups, BMSC viability increased with increasing concentration of Cu-doped MBGNs (5Cu-MBGNs). Furthermore, 5Cu-MBGNs induced an increase in alkaline phosphatase activity. In conclusion, doping with Mn, Zn, or Cu can enhance the biological properties of MBGNs in different ways for their potential use in bone regeneration approaches.

The properties of complex particle systems typically depend on multivariate distributions of particle properties, like size and shape characteristics. Multidimensional particle property distributions can be a powerful tool to describe these systems. However, only few techniques exist which are able to simultaneously measure more than one property of individual particles in fast and efficient ways. It is shown how two-dimensional property spaces can be constructed by the combination of two univariate measurements to obtain bivariate particle size distributions. The proposed method is a general approach, which can be applied to a wide spectrum of particle systems and measurement devices. In this paper, the results of a case study are presented, which allow the estimation of bivariate distributions of length and diameter of nanorods, solely using univariate distributions of their particle mass and extinction-weighted sedimentation coefficient distributions. These quantities contain joint information about the particle lengths and diameters, which is used for the reconstruction. The method is validated in a simulation study in which the bivariate distribution to be reconstructed and the reconstruction parameters are varied. In addition, regularization techniques are introduced to reduce methodical errors. This approach can be transferred to other particle systems and measurement techniques, for which functional relationships between particle properties and measured quantities are well described.

Fluidized bed opposed jet mills are capable of meeting the continuously growing demand for contamination-free fine particles. In this type of jet mill, the solid material is entrained and accelerated by expanding gas jets that are focused onto a focal point inside a fluidized bed. The resulting particle collisions induce breakage. The process is affected by the relative particle velocities and the number of particle–particle collisions. Clearly, both quantities are distributed. However, to date, neither relative particle velocities nor collision frequencies in such units have been determined. The present work introduces an innovative method to assess the stressing conditions in jet mills experimentally. To this end, mixtures of glass and ductile metal microspheres were used, with the latter employed in small amounts. Inter-particle collisions between the aluminum and glass spheres lead to the formation of dents on the microparticles. The size and number of these dents are associated with the individual collision velocities and overall collision frequencies. The correlation between dent size and collision velocity was obtained from finite element calculations based on empirical data. The proposed approach was validated using particle image velocimetry during secondary gas injection into a fluidized bed reactor. In this case the effect of the distance between two opposed nozzles was examined. For a lab-scaled fluidized bed opposed jet mill the effects of gas pressure and hold-up were investigated. Relative particle velocities were found to be significantly lower than the gas velocities, while the number of contacts per particle was determined to be extremely high.

A comprehensive study on controlled shape formation with high yield of three commercially relevant SiO2-based amorphous glasses in a stirred media mill is presented. Stressing under well-controlled conditions leads to micron-sized amorphous glass flakes with high aspect ratios. This unique result is quite contrary to the fundamental observation that comminution processes generally result in irregular shaped particles. The influences of glass composition, processing time, stirrer tip speed and grinding media size on the obtained products have been investigated. The size and shape of the obtained glass flakes have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The glass flakes exhibit thicknesses as low as 155 nm while the lateral dimensions are well within the micrometer range. Our study shows that particle size reduction occurs within the first hour of grinding. Afterwards plastic deformation of the fragments, which can be accompanied by densification of the glass network, leads to the formation and further thinning of the glass flakes. To demonstrate the quality and applicability of the glass flakes interference pigments were realized by a TiO2 coating via an aqueous titration process. The presented approach offers a simple, convenient and fully scalable top-down method to produce flake-like particles from various silica glasses. The obtained flakes are suitable substrates for further modifications and applications and the process can be transferred to other materials and glasses with tailor-made chemical compositions.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of different heating approaches during thermal rounding of polymer powders on powder bulk properties such as particle size, shape and flowability, as well as on the yield of process. Design/methodology/approach This study focuses on the rounding of commercial high-density polyethylene polymer particles in two different downer reactor designs using heated walls (indirect heating) and preheated carrier gas (direct heating). Powder bulk properties of the product obtained from both designs are characterized and compared. Findings Particle rounding with direct heating leads to a considerable increase in process yield and a reduction in powder agglomeration compared to the design with indirect heating. This subsequently leads to higher powder flowability. In terms of shape, indirect heating yields not only particles with higher sphericity but also entails substantial agglomeration of the rounded particles. Originality/value Shape modification via thermal rounding is the decisive step for the success of a top-down process chain for selective laser sintering powders with excellent flowability, starting with polymer particles from comminution. This report provides new information on the influence of the heating mode (direct/indirect) on the performance of the rounding process and particle properties.

Novel CoO-Li2O-B2O3 and CoO-GeO2-Li2O-B2O3 flake-like glass particles for battery applications are produced by an innovative technique: Glasses from melt quenching are processed into micron-sized glass flakes in a stirred media mill. Processing under well-controlled conditions yields flake-like particles with high aspect ratios which are suitable for anodes in Lithium-ion batteries. Electrochemical characterization by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, galvanostatic charge/discharge cycles and rate capability measurements indicates that the flakes show superior electrochemical properties compared to the bulk glass counterparts with a stable specific capacity of 620 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles. The majority of charge is stored by Li+ ion diffusion inside the material and impedance spectroscopy shows enhanced lithium ion diffusion capabilities of the flakes. The proposed fabrication process is performed under ambient conditions and is simple, cost-efficient, fully scalable and can be easily transferred to other glass compositions with electrochemically active metal oxides.

Charge control substances (CCS) as additives for polymer powders are investigated to make polymer powders suitable for the electrophotographic powder deposition in powder-based additive manufacturing. The use of CCS unifies the occurring charge of a powder, which is crucial for this novel deposition method. Therefore, commercially available polymer powder is functionalized via dry coating in a shaker mixer with two different CCS and analyzed afterwards. The flowability and the degree of coverage of additives on the surface are used to evaluate the coating process. The thermal properties are analyzed by use of differential scanning calorimetry. Most important, the influence of the CCS on the powder charge is shown by measurements of the electrostatic surface potential at first and the powder deposition itself is performed and analyzed with selected formulations afterwards to show the potential of this method. Finally, tensile strength specimens are produced with the conventional deposition method in order to show the usability of the CCS for current machines.
