La presente investigación tiene como objetivo proponer una reforma al Artículo 42 de la Ley Orgánica de Garantías Jurisdiccionales y Control Constitucional (LOGJCC) de Ecuador, para exigir que los jueces realicen un análisis exhaustivo y fundamentado de los hechos en impugnaciones de actos administrativos, garantizando la protección adecuada de los derechos del recurrente y evitando interpretaciones restrictivas. Se convocó a 27 profesionales e investigadores jurídicos de alta experticia con el objetivo de conocer su perspectiva sobre la interpretación restrictiva de la legalidad y su impacto en la efectividad de la acción de protección en Ecuador. A través de un análisis de sus opiniones, se buscó entender cómo esta interpretación puede afectar la eficacia de la protección de los derechos fundamentales. Basado en los resultados del análisis documental y la encuesta a especialistas, se realizó la propuesta de reforma del numeral 4 del Art. 42 de la LOGJCC. La propuesta de reforma fue presentada a un panel de 9 expertos que evaluaron su pertinencia y efectividad en el contexto legal actual. La información utilizada en esta evaluación fue gestionada y procesada mediante un sistema informático desarrollado específicamente para este propósito, el cual compiló datos relevantes y antecedentes legales para respaldar la propuesta. La propuesta de reforma fue validada como muy pertinente.

The development and maturation of the CRISPR/Cas genome editing system provides a valuable tool for plant functional genomics and genetic improvement. Currently available genome-editing tools have a limited number of targets, restricting their application in genetic research. In this study, we developed a novel CRISPR/Cas9 plant ultra-multiplex genome editing system consisting of two template vectors, eight donor vectors, four destination vectors, and one primer-design software package. By combining the advantages of Golden Gate cloning to assemble multiple repetitive fragments and Gateway recombination to assemble large fragments and by changing the structure of the amplicons used to assemble sgRNA expression cassettes, the plant ultra-multiplex genome editing system can assemble a single binary vector targeting more than 40 genomic loci. A rice knockout vector containing 49 sgRNA expression cassettes was assembled and a high co-editing efficiency was observed. This plant ultra-multiplex genome editing system advances synthetic biology and plant genetic engineering.

Abstract The development of a basin‐specific comprehensive flood record using publicly available data for the James River Basin, Virginia. Using mixed surface analysis maps (NOAA, NWS), historical hurricane records (IBTrACS, HURDAT2), and flood and river gauge records (NWS, USGS), a database is created for analysis. Related to creating this database, a novel classification of six unique weather systems (non‐tropical and tropical) responsible for flooding is presented. The analysis includes Two‐Way tables with observed marginal and joint probabilities in various potential flood, storm, and regional combinations. Results show 233 tropical systems passed within the 500‐km study area, with 12.4%, or 29 systems of those systems causing flooding within the basin. An additional 713 events were non‐tropical, composing the majority of flood sources in the basin. Non‐tropical systems are responsible for 84% of the worst floods recorded, leading to an increased frequency of 6% yearly since 1941 and nearly 770% between 2014 and 2018. The findings of this study will be the basis for assessing land use and population patterns in the area, along with a future compound flooding model for the lower James River Basin.

Large language models (LLMs) underlie remarkable recent advanced in natural language processing, and they are beginning to be applied in clinical contexts. We aimed to evaluate the clinical potential of state-of-the-art LLMs in ophthalmology using a more robust benchmark than raw examination scores. We trialled GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 on 347 ophthalmology questions before GPT-3.5, GPT-4, PaLM 2, LLaMA, expert ophthalmologists, and doctors in training were trialled on a mock examination of 87 questions. Performance was analysed with respect to question subject and type (first order recall and higher order reasoning). Masked ophthalmologists graded the accuracy, relevance, and overall preference of GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 responses to the same questions. The performance of GPT-4 (69%) was superior to GPT-3.5 (48%), LLaMA (32%), and PaLM 2 (56%). GPT-4 compared favourably with expert ophthalmologists (median 76%, range 64-90%), ophthalmology trainees (median 59%, range 57-63%), and unspecialised junior doctors (median 43%, range 41-44%). Low agreement between LLMs and doctors reflected idiosyncratic differences in knowledge and reasoning with overall consistency across subjects and types (p>0.05). (1) Background: The association of COVID-19 infection and mortality with mobility and weather in Indiana and Kentucky was compared for the period from 1 March to 15 May 2020. (2) Methods: The risk of COVID-19 infection and mortality was evaluated using Cox regressions with the following covariates: mobility (retail/recreation, grocery/pharmacy, and workplace), weather (precipitation, minimum and maximum temperature, ultraviolet [UV] index), and metropolitan status. (3) Results: A higher maximum temperature (adjusted hazard ratioinfection (aHRi) = 1.01; adjusted hazard ratiodeath (aHRd) = 1.001), metropolitan status (aHRi = 1.12; aHRd = 2.05), and a higher minimum temperature (aHRi = 1.01) were associated with increased risks of COVID-19 infection and/or mortality. Protection against COVID-19 infection and/or mortality was associated with retail/recreation (aHRi = 0.97; aHRd = 0.937), grocery/pharmacy (aHRi = 0.991; aHRd = 0.992), workplace (aHRi = 0.99; aHRd = 0.965), precipitation (aHRi = 0.999; aHRd = 0.9978), UV index (aHRi = 0.37; aHRd = 0.748), and a higher minimum temperature (aHRd = 0.994). COVID-19 infection (aHRi = 1.18) and mortality (aHRd = 1.59) risks were higher in Indiana compared to Kentucky. (4) Conclusions: COVID-19 infection and mortality were 18% and 59% more likely among Indiana residents compared to Kentucky residents, respectively. This may be attributed to variations in stay-at-home order compliance and enforcement between Indiana and Kentucky.

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are bright radio bursts originating at cosmological distances. Only three repeating FRBs FRB 20121102A, FRB 20190520B, and FRB 20201124A among ∼60 known repeating FRBs have circular polarization. We observed the FRB 20220912A with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) at L -band on 2022 October 24 and detected 128 bursts in 1.4 hr, corresponding to a burst rate of about 90 hr ^−1 , which is the highest yet for FRBs observed by the GBT. The average rotation measure (RM) was −0.4 ± 0.3 rad m ^−2 with negligible intraday RM change, indicating a likely nonmagneto-ionic environment. A total of 61% of bursts have a linear polarization fraction greater than 90%. Approximately 56% of the bright bursts have circular polarization. A downward drift in frequency and polarization angle swings were found in our sample. The characterization of FRB 20220912A indicates that the circular polarization is unlikely to be caused by the magneto-ionic environment for at least some of the repeating FRB population.

As forced migration increases dramatically due to such factors as climate change, rising conflict, and authoritarianism, more legal cases on human trafficking and sex work are sure to arise. To date, very few cases on these issues have been decided in international human rights tribunals, and they have been subject to extensive criticism, especially for their conflation of slavery, human trafficking, forced prostitution, and consensual sex work. This article analyzes recent jurisprudence from Europe and Africa to address this conceptual confusion and argue that tribunals must interrogate their use of the terms dignity and exploitation or risk further marginalizing already marginalized people.

The present work deals with the valorization of agro-industrial by-products to realize bonded abrasives. Four by-products were studied because of their wide availability and mechanical properties: palm nuts shells (Elaeis guineensis), Coco Nucifera shells, fruit kernels of Canarium schweinfurthii and fruit kernels of Raffia Vinifera. The Oliver and Pharr hardness and Young’s modulus of the raffia cores are obtained by instrumented macro indentation, giving the values 101 MPa and 1.82 GPa, respectively. The development of the abrasive wheels was based on the experimental method of full factorial design at 2 levels. Porosity, hardness, resilience, material removal rate and wear were determined. Leeb 280 HL hardness shoe sole material was used for tribological testing. The optimal formulations have 20% binder content and 1 mm grain size of the four agro-industrial by-products used with a higher material removal rate and a longer life than commercial grinding wheels. These results presage their use in the shoe industry and abrasive disc huskers.

We propose a self-powered remote multi-sensing system for traffic sensing which is powered by the collective energy harvested from the mechanical vibration of the road caused by the passing vehicles and from the temperature gradient between the asphalt of the road and the soil underneath. A stacked piezoelectric transducer converts mechanical vibrations into electrical energy and a thermoelectric generator harvests the thermal energy from the thermal gradient. Electrical energy signals from the stacked piezoelectric transducer and the thermoelectric generators are converted into usable DC power to recharge the battery using AC-DC and DC-DC converters working simultaneously. The multi-sensing system comprises an embedded system with a microcontroller that acquires data from the sensors and sends the sensory data to an IoT transceiver which transmits the data as RF packets to an ethernet gateway. The gateway converts the RF packets into Internet Protocol (IP) packets and sends them to a remote server. Laboratory and road-testing results showed over 98% sensory data accuracy with the system functioning solely powered by the energy harvested from the alternative energy sources. The successful maximum transmission distance obtained between the IoT, and the gateway was approximately 1 mile, which is a considerable transmission distance achieved in an urban environment. Successful operation of the self-powered multi-sensing system under both laboratory and road conditions contributes considerably to the fields of energy harvesting and self-powered remote sensing systems. The energy flow chart and efficiency for the steps in the system were found to be mechanical power from vehicles to the energy harvester of 0.25%, stacked PZT transducer efficiency was found to be 37%, and for the TEGs the efficiency is 11%. AC-to-DC and DC-to-DC converters’ efficiencies were found to be 90% and 11%. The wireless communication RF transceiver efficiency was found to be 62.5%.

Sensory hair cells are the receptors for auditory, vestibular, and lateral line sensory organs in vertebrates. These cells are distinguished by “hair”-like projections from their apical surface collectively known as the hair bundle. Along with the staircase arrangement of the actin-filled stereocilia, the hair bundle features a single, non-motile, true cilium called the kinocilium. The kinocilium plays an important role in bundle development and the mechanics of sensory detection. To understand more about kinocilial development and structure, we performed a transcriptomic analysis of zebrafish hair cells to identify cilia-associated genes that have yet to be characterized in hair cells. In this study, we focused on three such genes—ankef1a, odf3l2a, and saxo2—because human or mouse orthologs are either associated with sensorineural hearing loss or are located near uncharacterized deafness loci. We made transgenic fish that express fluorescently tagged versions of their proteins, demonstrating their localization to the kinocilia of zebrafish hair cells. Furthermore, we found that Ankef1a, Odf3l2a, and Saxo2 exhibit distinct localization patterns along the length of the kinocilium and within the cell body. Lastly, we have reported a novel overexpression phenotype of Saxo2. Overall, these results suggest that the hair cell kinocilium in zebrafish is regionalized along its proximal-distal axis and set the groundwork to understand more about the roles of these kinocilial proteins in hair cells.

Florence Danila et al. perform mutation screens on Setaria viridis and identify an ABCG transporter gene which serves as a step in the suberin synthesis pathway. This study demonstrates that a functional suberin lamellae is essential for efficient C4 photosynthesis in S. viridis.

Abstract Background Stomata in rice control a number of physiological processes by regulating gas and water exchange between the atmosphere and plant tissues. The impact of the structural diversity of these micropores on its conductance level is an important area to explore before introducing stomatal traits into any breeding program in order to increase photosynthesis and crop yield. Therefore, an intensive measurement of structural components of stomatal complex (SC) of twenty three Oryza species spanning the primary, secondary and tertiary gene pools of rice has been conducted. Results Extensive diversity was found in stomatal number and size in different Oryza species and Oryza complexes. Interestingly, the dynamics of stomatal traits in Oryza family varies differently within different Oryza genetic complexes. Example, the Sativa complex exhibits the greatest diversity in stomatal number, while the Officinalis complex is more diverse for its stomatal size. Combining the structural information with the Oryza phylogeny revealed that speciation has tended towards increasing stomatal density rather than stomatal size in rice family. Thus, the most recent species (i.e. the domesticated rice) eventually has developed smaller yet numerous stomata. Along with this, speciation has also resulted in a steady increase in stomatal conductance (anatomical, g max) in different Oryza species. These two results unambiguously prove that increasing stomatal number (which results in stomatal size reduction) has increased the stomatal conductance in rice. Correlations of structural traits with the anatomical conductance, leaf carbon isotope discrimination (∆13C) and major leaf morphological and anatomical traits provide strong supports to untangle the ever mysterious dependencies of these traits in rice. The result displayed an expected negative correlation in the number and size of stomata; and positive correlations among the stomatal length, width and area with guard cell length, width on both abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces. In addition, g max is found to be positively correlated with stomatal number and guard cell length. The ∆13C values of rice species showed a positive correlation with stomatal number, which suggest an increased water loss with increased stomatal number. Interestingly, in contrast, the ∆13C consistently shows a negative relationship with stomatal and guard cell size, which suggests that the water loss is less when the stomata are larger. Therefore, we hypothesize that increasing stomatal size, instead of numbers, is a better approach for breeding programs in order to minimize the water loss through stomata in rice. Conclusion Current paper generates useful data on stomatal profile of wild rice that is hitherto unknown for the rice science community. It has been proved here that the speciation has resulted in an increased stomatal number accompanied by size reduction during Oryza’s evolutionary course; this has resulted in an increased g max but reduced water use efficiency. Although may not be the sole driver of water use efficiency in rice, our data suggests that stomata are a potential target for modifying the currently low water use efficiency in domesticated rice. It is proposed that Oryza barthii can be used in traditional breeding programs in enhancing the stomatal size of elite rice cultivars.

Aflatoxins are carcinogenic secondary metabolites produced by several species of Aspergillus, including Aspergillus flavus, an important ear rot pathogen in maize. Most commercial corn hybrids are susceptible to infection by A. flavus, and aflatoxin contaminated grain causes economic damage to farmers. The creation of inbred lines resistant to Aspergillus fungal infection or the accumulation of aflatoxins would be aided by knowing the pertinent alleles and metabolites associated with resistance in corn lines. Multiple Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) and association mapping studies have uncovered several dozen potential genes, but each with a small effect on resistance. Metabolic pathway analysis, using the Pathway Association Study Tool (PAST), was performed on aflatoxin accumulation resistance using data from four Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS). The present research compares the outputs of these pathway analyses and seeks common metabolic mechanisms underlying each. Genes, pathways, metabolites, and mechanisms highlighted here can contribute to improving phenotypic selection of resistant lines via measurement of more specific and highly heritable resistance-related traits and genetic gain via marker assisted or genomic selection with multiple SNPs linked to resistance-related pathways.

Abstract Wild rice species are a source of genetic material for improving cultivated rice (Oryza sativa) and a means to understand its evolutionary history. Renewed interest in non‐steady‐state photosynthesis in crops has taken place due its potential in improving sustainable productivity. Variation was characterized for photosynthetic induction and relaxation at two leaf canopy levels in three rice species. The wild rice accessions had 16%–40% higher rates of leaf CO2 uptake (A) during photosynthetic induction relative to the O. sativa accession. However, O. sativa had an overall higher photosynthetic capacity when compared to accessions of its wild progenitors. Additionally, O. sativa had a faster stomatal closing response, resulting in higher intrinsic water‐use efficiency during high‐to‐low light transitions. Leaf position in the canopy had a significant effect on non‐steady‐state photosynthesis, but not steady‐state photosynthesis. The results show potential to utilize wild material to refine plant models and improve non‐steady‐state photosynthesis in cultivated rice for increased productivity.

Abstract Background Validating new techniques for fetal cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is challenging due to random fetal movement that precludes repeat measurements. Consequently, fetal CMR development has been largely performed using physical phantoms or postnatal volunteers. In this work, we present an open-source simulation designed to aid in the development and validation of new approaches for fetal CMR. Our approach, fetal extended Cardiac-Torso cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (Fetal XCMR), builds on established methods for simulating CMR acquisitions but is tailored toward the dynamic physiology of the fetal heart and body. We present comparisons between the Fetal XCMR phantom and data acquired in utero, resulting in image quality, anatomy, tissue signals and contrast. Methods Existing extended Cardiac-Torso models are modified to create maternal and fetal anatomy, combined according to simulated motion, mapped to CMR contrast, and converted to CMR data. To provide a comparison between the proposed simulation and experimental fetal CMR images acquired in utero, images from a typical scan of a pregnant woman are included and simulated acquisitions were generated using matching CMR parameters, motion and noise levels. Three reconstruction (static, real-time, and CINE), and two motion estimation methods (translational motion, fetal heart rate) from data acquired in transverse, sagittal, coronal, and short-axis planes of the fetal heart were performed to compare to in utero acquisitions and demonstrate feasibility of the proposed simulation framework. Results Overall, CMR contrast, morphologies, and relative proportions of the maternal and fetal anatomy are well represented by the Fetal XCMR images when comparing the simulation to static images acquired in utero. Additionally, visualization of maternal respiratory and fetal cardiac motion is comparable between Fetal XCMR and in utero real-time images. Finally, high quality CINE image reconstructions provide excellent delineation of fetal cardiac anatomy and temporal dynamics for both data types. Conclusion The fetal CMR phantom provides a new method for evaluating fetal CMR acquisition and reconstruction methods by simulating the underlying anatomy and physiology. As the field of fetal CMR continues to grow, new methods will become available and require careful validation. The fetal CMR phantom is therefore a powerful and convenient tool in the continued development of fetal cardiac imaging.

The Western corn rootworm (WCR; Diabrotica virgifera virgifera) is an economically important belowground pest of maize. Belowground feeding by WCR is damaging because it weakens the roots system, diminishes nutrient uptake, and creates entry points for fungal and bacterial pathogens and increases lodging, all of which can significantly suppress maize yields. Previously, it was demonstrated that belowground herbivory can trigger plant defense responses in the roots and the shoots, thereby impacting intraplant communication. Although several aspects of maize-WCR interactions have been reported, co-transcriptomic remodeling in the plant and insect are yet to be explored. We used a maize genotype, Mp708, that is resistant to a large guild of herbivore pests to study the underlying plant defense signaling network between below and aboveground tissues. We also evaluated WCR compensatory transcriptome responses. Using RNA-seq, we profiled the transcriptome of roots and leaves that interacted with WCR infestation up to 5 days post infestation (dpi). Our results suggest that Mp708 shoots and roots had elevated constitutive and WCR-feeding induced expression of genes related to jasmonic acid and ethylene pathways, respectively, before and after WCR feeding for 1 and 5 days. Similarly, extended feeding by WCR for 5 days in Mp708 roots suppressed many genes involved in the benzoxazinoid pathway, which is a major group of indole-derived secondary metabolites that provides resistance to several insect pests in maize. Furthermore, extended feeding by WCR on Mp708 roots revealed several genes that were downregulated in WCR, which include genes related to proteolysis, neuropeptide signaling pathway, defense response, drug catabolic process, and hormone metabolic process. These findings indicate a dynamic transcriptomic dialog between WCR and WCR-infested maize plants.

BackgroundIt is highly contested whether cytoreductive nephrectomy for treating advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with sarcomatoid features (sRCC) benefits overall survival. Patients with sRCC are known to have a poor prognosis, and these tumors have a more aggressive biology than those without sarcomatoid features.MethodsPatients with clear cell RCC or non–clear cell RCC underwent cytoreductive nephrectomy in efforts to improve overall survival (OS). Patients were stratified by presence or absence of histologic sarcomatoid features within tumor samples.ResultsOf 167 patients who underwent cytoreductive nephrectomy, 127 had clear cell RCC, of whom 14 had sarcomatoid features, and 40 had non–clear cell RCC, of whom 13 had sarcomatoid features. Median age of the cohort was 62 years (range, 56.5–69 years). The cohort included 119 male (71.3%) and 48 (28.7%) female patients. Among all patients with advanced RCC, having sRCC had a significantly worse OS after cytoreductive nephrectomy (30 vs 8 months; hazard ratio [HR], 2.88; P 10% or ≤10% sarcomatoid features present within the sample, there was no significant difference in OS (8 vs 8.5 months; P =0.32).ConclusionsSarcomatoid features within tumor histology confer significantly poor prognosis. Patients with sRCC, regardless of clear cell vs non–clear cell histology, have significantly shorter OS. Even among patients with 10% or less sarcomatoid features, there was no OS benefit to cytoreductive nephrectomy. Based on our findings, there appears to be a limited to no role of cytoreductive nephrectomy if sRCC is identified on pretreatment biopsy. The role of radiomics and pre-operative biopsies may confer significant benefit in this patient population.

BackgroundPenile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a rare malignancy, and those patients with metastatic disease have limited treatment options. Treatment is largely comprised of platinum-based chemotherapy; however, patients progressing after initial chemotherapy have a median overall survival (OS) of less than 6 months. Based on a high percentage of PD-L1 expression in patients with PSCC, and its biological similarities to other squamous cell carcinomas, we present two patient cases treated with pembrolizumab with extraordinary durable treatment response far beyond treatment with standard therapy.Main BodyThe first patient is a 64 year old male with PSCC who was treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, partial penectomy, and adjuvant radiation prior to developing metastatic disease. He had a high TMB (14 mutations/Mb) and was started on pembrolizumab with a complete response, which has been maintained for 38 months. The second patient is an 85 year old male with PSCC who was treated with partial penectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation prior to developing metastatic disease. He had positive PD-L1 expression CPS 130) and was started on pembrolizumab with a partial response, which has been maintained for 18 months after starting treatment.ConclusionsThese two cases of extreme durable response with pembrolizumab (with molecular data including TMB and PD-L1 status) represent a significant clinical benefit in this patient population. With limited treatment options that result in a median OS of less than 6 months, along with the toxicity profile of chemotherapy which may not be tolerated in elderly patients with comorbidities, this survival benefit with pembrolizumab, along with advances in tumor sequencing and clinical trials shows that there is a potentially significant benefit with novel therapies in this patient population.

Introduction: Pulse Oximetry (PO) is widely used for the noninvasive detection of hypoxemia, particularly in the perioperative setting. Research regarding the perioperative assessment of nursing knowledge of PO continues to evolve. Prior evaluations have identified relative knowledge deficits among nurses regarding physiologic principles, data interpretation, and clinical application. Such deficits need identification and targeted education to prevent perioperative patient mismanagement. Aim: To assess nursing knowledge of PO in perioperative and critical care settings of a single center in the United States and to analyse identified knowledge deficits. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted in Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and Medical Respiratory ICU (MRICU) among 150 participants. The validated questionnaire on surveying PO principle consisted of 21 true/false and 3 open-ended questions. Univariate analysis of nursing Total Knowledge Score (TKS), years of clinical experience, and current practice settings was performed. Introduction of a C4 photosynthetic pathway into C3 rice (Oryza sativa) requires installation of a biochemical pump that concentrates CO2 at the site of carboxylation in modified bundle sheath cells. To investigate the feasibility of this, we generated a quadruple line that simultaneously accumulates four of the core C4 photosynthetic enzymes from the NADP-malic enzyme subtype, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (ZmPEPC), NADP-malate dehydrogenase (ZmNADP-MDH), NADP-malic enzyme (ZmNADP-ME), and pyruvate phosphate dikinase (ZmPPDK). This led to enhanced enzyme activity and mild phenotypic perturbations but was largely neutral in its effects on photosynthetic rate. Measurements of the flux of 13CO2 through photosynthetic metabolism revealed a significant increase in the incorporation of 13C into malate, consistent with increased fixation of 13CO2 via PEP carboxylase in lines expressing the maize PEPC enzyme. However, there was no significant differences in labeling of 3-phosphoglycerate (3PGA) indicating that there was no carbon flux through NADP-ME into the Calvin-Benson cycle. There was also no significant difference in labeling of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) indicating that there was no carbon flux through PPDK. Crossing the quadruple line with a line with reduced glycine decarboxylase H-protein (OsGDCH) abundance led to a photosynthetic phenotype characteristic of the reduced OsGDCH line and higher labeling of malate, aspartate and citrate than in the quintuple line. There was evidence of 13C labeling of aspartate indicating 13CO2 fixation into oxaloacetate by PEPC and conversion to aspartate by the endogenous aspartate aminotransferase activity. While Kranz anatomy or other anatomical modifications have not yet been installed in these plants to enable a fully functional C4 cycle, these results demonstrate for the first-time a partial flux through the carboxylation phase of NADP-ME C4 metabolism in transgenic rice containing two of the key metabolic steps in the C4 pathway.

Multimodal integration is an important process in perceptual decision-making. In humans, this process has often been shown to be statistically optimal, or near optimal: sensory information is combined in a fashion that minimizes the average error in perceptual representation of stimuli. However, sometimes there are costs that come with the optimization, manifesting as illusory percepts. We review audio-visual facilitations and illusions that are products of multisensory integration, and the computational models that account for these phenomena. In particular, the same optimal computational model can lead to illusory percepts, and we suggest that more studies should be needed to detect and mitigate these illusions, as artifacts in artificial cognitive systems. We provide cautionary considerations when designing artificial cognitive systems with the view of avoiding such artifacts. Finally, we suggest avenues of research toward solutions to potential pitfalls in system design. We conclude that detailed understanding of multisensory integration and the mechanisms behind audio-visual illusions can benefit the design of artificial cognitive systems.

Background: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4), a cell surface protein, exhibits a crucial role in tumor biology and regulation of the immune system. We aim to study the impact of DPP4 inhibitors (DPP4i) in patients with prostate cancer (PRC), pancreatic cancer (PC) and breast cancer (BC).Methods: Using the SEER and Medicare linked database, we identified patients with PRC or PC or BC with coexisting type II diabetes mellitus between 2007 and 2015. Patients were classified into four groups: (1) not on either DPP4i or metformin (reference group), this group included patient that were on anti-diabetic agents other than metformin or DPP4i (2) metformin only, (3) DPP4i only, and (4) DPP4i along with metformin (combination group). Overall survival (OS) analyses were performed using SAS®, version 9.4.Results: We identified 15,330 patients with PRC, 5,359 patients with PC and 16,085 patients with BC. In PRC cohort, patients on DPP4i had significant survival advantage with HR 0.77 (95% CI: 0.64–0.93), P = 0.005 when compared to the reference group. Patients taking metformin also had significant OS benefit with HR 0.87 (95% CI: 0.81–0.93), P < 0.0001 when compared to the reference group. However, in BC cohort, OS did not favor the patients taking DPP4i with HR 1.07 (95% CI: 0.93–1.25, P = 0.33). Similarly, in PC cohort, OS was indifferent for the patients on DPP4i with HR 1.07 (95% CI: 0.93–1.24, P = 0.68). Upon subgroup analyses of PRC patients, the survival favored the group taking DPP4i, irrespective of stage, use of chemotherapy, androgen-deprivation therapy, and prostatectomy or radiation therapy.Conclusions: DPP4i seems to improve survival in PRC patients; however, not in PC or BC patients. While the exact mechanism involved remains to be elucidated, a prospective clinical trial would help to confirm these findings.

The rapidly growing population will soon require a near doubling of food production. This increase must be achieved in a manner that maintains environmental integrity, preserves public health and resolves food access and distribution equalities. The use of forage legumes in arable rotations can make significant and multidimensional contributions to this sustainable intensification and this paper reviews the potential contribution of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), with particular reference to sustainable cereal production in conservation agriculture systems. The use of red clover as a tool in soil fertility-building and the multiple benefits to the cropping system in which it is used is described. The benefits discussed include atmospheric nitrogen fixation, soil conservation, structural soil improvements and a suite of agroecosystem services including increased soil microbial activity, the phytoremediation of polluted soils and the provision of food for pollinators. Reported allelopathic weed suppression by red clover cover crops and the role of modern plant breeding in creating new varieties that further enhance system sustainability is also discussed. Finally, as economic considerations will always impact on adoption rates, the profitability of red clover rotations in terms of silage value and yield benefits is taken into account.

In-field infection of maize (Zea mays L.) ears by the fungus Aspergillus flavus Link:Fr causes pre-harvest aflatoxin contamination of maize grain. Germplasm lines with host-plant resistance to aflatoxin accumulation are available to breeders, but these lines often possess undesirable agronomic characteristics. Commercial lines with expired plant variety protection (ex-PVP lines) are a potential source of elite germplasm available to public maize breeders. A diallel cross containing three aflatoxin-accumulation-resistant germplasm lines and seven ex-PVP lines were evaluated in replicated trials for aflatoxin contamination after artificial inoculation and for yield. The resistant germplasm lines Mp313E, Mp715, and Mp717 were the only lines with significant general combining ability (GCA) for reduced aflatoxin accumulation. Of the ex-PVP lines evaluated, the Stiff-Stalk line F118 was the most promising line to use in breeding crosses. Based on its GCA, it was the only ex-PVP line that did not significantly increase aflatoxin and the only ex-PVP line that significantly increased yield. Second-cycle breeding lines derived from crosses between F118 and the resistant donor lines will be valuable if they combine the donor lines’ disease resistance with F118’s earlier maturity while introgressing the disease resistance into a genetic background that aligns with the industry’s well-defined heterotic groups.

Abstract Background Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder is a well-recognized but rare complication of hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplant. Due to rarity of this disease, retrospective studies from major transplant centers has been the main source to provide treatment guidelines, which are still in evolution. The sample size of this study is among one of the largest study on PTLD till date reported throughout the world. Methods This study was performed at University of Florida which is one of the largest transplant center in South East United States. We performed treatment and survival analysis along with univariate and multivariate analysis to identify prognostic factors. Results We reviewed 141 patients diagnosed with PTLD over last 22 years with median follow-up of 2.4 years. The estimated median overall survival of the entire group was 15.0 years. Sub group analysis showed that 5-year overall survival rates of pediatric population were 88% (median not reached). For adults, median OS was 5.35 years while for elderly patients it was 1.32 years. The estimated median OS of patients with monomorphic PTLD was 9.0 years while in polymorphic PTLD was 19.3 years. Records of past climate can inform us on the natural range and mechanisms of climate change. In the arid Pacific southwestern United States (PSW), which includes southern California, there exist a variety of Holocene records that can be used to infer past winter conditions (moisture and/or temperature). Holocene records of summer climate, however, are rare from the PSW. In the future, climate changes due to anthropogenic forcing are expected to increase the severity of drought in the already water stressed PSW. Hot droughts are of considerable concern as summer temperatures rise. As a result, understanding how summer conditions changed in the past is critical to understanding future predictions under varied climate forcings. Here, we present a c. 10.9 kcal BP δ18O(calcite) record from Lake Elsinore, California, interpreted to reflect δ18O(lake water) values as controlled by over-water evaporation from summer-to-early fall. Our results reveal three millennial scale intervals: (1) the highly evaporative Early Holocene (10.55–6.65 kcal BP), (2) the less evaporative Mid-Holocene (6.65–2.65 kcal BP); and (3) the evaporative Late Holocene (2.65–0.55 kcal BP). These results are coupled with an inferred winter precipitation runoff (sand content) record from Kirby et al. (2010). Using these data together, we estimate the duration and severity of centennial-scale Holocene droughts and pluvials (e.g., high δ18O(calcite) values plus low sand content = drought and vice versa). Furthermore, the coupled δ18O(calcite) and sand data provide a generalized Holocene lake level history. The most severe, long-lasting droughts (i.e., maximum summer-to-early fall evaporation and minimum winter precipitation runoff) occur in the Early Holocene. Fewer, less severe, and shorter duration droughts occurred during the Mid-Holocene as pluvials became more common. Droughts return with less severity and duration in the Late Holocene. Notably, the Little Ice Age is characterized as the wettest period during the Late Holocene.

Central venous access devices, specifically implantable ports, play an essential role in the care of oncology patients; however, complications are prevalent. This retrospective single-institutional review was performed to identify rates of complications from port placement and potential factors associated with these events. A retrospective analysis of 539 cancer patients who underwent port insertion between March 2016 and March 2017 at our institution was conducted. Data examining 18 potentially predictive factors were collected, and multivariate analysis was conducted using logistic regression and odds ratios (ORs) with standard errors to determine predictive factors. Out of 539 patients, 100 patients (19%) experienced 1 complication, and 12 patients (2%) experienced 2 or more complications.
