Abstract

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have emerged as a promising technology for renewable energy generation due to their low cost, lightweight, flexibility, and compatibility with roll-to-roll manufacturing. However, OSCs still face challenges in achieving high power conversion efficiency (PCE) due to various factors, including recombination loss. In this study, we investigated the effect of introducing a layer of eight atomic percent gadolinium-doped zinc oxide (Zn0.92Gd0.08O) between the poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT): [6,6]-phenyl butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) active layer and the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode of the OSC. The reference cell, which has an Au/P3HT:PCBM/ZnO/FTO structure, exhibits a PCE of 0.52%. Remarkably, when the Zn0.92Gd0.08O layer was inserted (Au/P3HT:PCBM/Zn0.92Gd0.08O/FTO), the PCE increased significantly to 3.42%, which is more than six times the increase. Through further analysis, we present that the insertion of the Zn0.92Gd0.08O layer induces spin polarization in the P3HT:PCBM layer, leading to enhanced charge transport and reducing the recombination rate. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the Zn0.92Gd0.08O film can potentially improve OSC performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Graphene is a 2D material with superior properties, since it has the advantage of being both conducting and transparent. Due to graphene superior properties, many applications on microelectronics and nanotechnology have been developed to exploit graphene. The objective of this chapter is to review the progress of graphene, the graphene synthesis process and its derivatives in nanomaterial. The structural, optical, electrical and thermal properties of the graphene are also discussed in conjunction with their potential applications, particularly sensors. Graphene-sensor has been developed into many applications and purpose such as gas sensors, biosensor and electrochemical sensors. In addition, this chapter reveals how important graphene is and the potential applications of graphene in the future with its outstanding properties. Abstract

Trivalent metal-doped TiO2 thin films have been extensively investigated in gas sensor applications. The trivalent metal dopants are Al, Y and Gd. The trilayer fabrication of a gas sensor consists of a thin film, sputtered TiO2 and Au nanoparticles. The characteristics of the gas sensing properties are strongly correlated with the annealing temperature, film thickness, type of doping and deposition method. The subsequent properties are presented - the crystalline structure, grain size, roughness, strain, stress and defects. Thin films have been developed with concentrations of O2 gas up to 10 sccm. A response time for O2 gas in milliseconds was obtained at room temperature. Al doped TiO2 thin film have a faster response time operating at room temperature compared with other thin films. Oxygen vacancy defects also contribute to the speed of the response time for a gas sensor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

22. Fabrication of graphene-based resistive sensor for eschericia coli bacteria sensing

Abstract

The presence of fecal coliform bacteria like Escherichia coli (E. coli) in aquatic environments indicates that the water has been contaminated with the fecal material of human or animals. The risk of health threatening to humans become high when E. coli bacteria are exposed to water, not only causes diarrhea but also lead to death if not treated immediately. Many existing sensors to detect E. coli bacteria are not portable and expensive, while the conventional methods are time consuming and need the sterile procedure. Therefore, it is important to develop a sensor to detect E. coli rapidly, portable and user friendly. In this work, bacteria sensor based on resistivity was developed using graphene nanostructure as a sensing layer, since carbon material like graphene has been known to have a biocompatibility and excellent electrical property. The E. coli bacteria used in this experiment were collected from domestic wastewater and commercial of E. coli strain no. ATCCC 25922. A biochemical test was performed to detect the presence of E. coli in wastewater. The physical characterization of the bacteria was carried out by using FESEM and it was found that the E. coli has size ranging from 1.4-1.6 μm in length. The wettability properties of graphene confirmed that graphene surface is hydrophobic with contact angle of 108.9o which is suitable for bacterial detection. Raman spectroscopy measurements shows that the ratio of G peak and D peak intensity increase due to increase in the number of E. coli. Moreover, the electrical property of graphene shows increasing the number of the bacteria from 4 to 273 colony forming-unit (cfu) result decreasing the resistance from 4.371 to 3.903 ohm gradually. Finally, the sensor was successfully designed using SolidWorks and fabricated by integrating graphene film as a sensing layer with Arduino micro-controller. 23. The Quality Optimization of SiO2/Graphene Material as Sensing Layer for Escherichia coli Bacteria Sensor Application

Abstract

Escherichia coli bacteria sensors have been broadly developed broadly to overcome a diarrheal disease caused by Escherichia coli on poor hygienic water. Sensing layer, as a main part of the sensor, contacts directly to the analyte on sensors system. Some materials were costly and harmful to detect bacteria. Potentially, graphene is a natural carbon derivative with some excellence properties; easy synthesis, and biocompatible. Hence, the quality of the SiO2/graphene sensing layer was conducted through optical, physical, and electrical characterization to analyze biocompatibility, repeatability, and selectivity. The result showed that Escherichia coli bacterial growth was found around SiO2/graphene after bacterial exposure indicating a biocompatible material. Raman peak also pointed the fingerprint of graphene after 25 times Escherichia coli exposure through G (1584.52 cm–1) and 2D peak (2701.5 cm–1) promising as a repeatable material. The ID/IG ratio increased by the time the bacteria exposure times increased indicating a withstand material from defects and or disorders after bacteria exposure. Through I/V meter, the increasing number of Escherichia coli could increase the resistance value of SiO2/graphene. This sensing layer could detect the presence of Escherichia coli in limit of detection 16 CFU/mL.
