Detrital and volcanic-detrital rocks from the Ifni Buttonhole and Lakhssas Plateau were analyzed to determine their provenance, compositional maturity, and alteration source. Geochemically, the sediments were classified as arkoses, lithic arenites, grauwackes, sandstones, lithic arenites, and Fe-rich sands, indicating low compositional and mineralogical maturity. A high average SiO2 concentration and low Al2O3 were consistent with a low abundance of shale and clay components. The geochemical signatures of the detrital and volcano-detrital (RDVD) rocks indicate that they have undergone a moderate to low degree of chemical alteration. The CIA study also suggests that the granitic, granodioritic rocks represent the source provenance which, during weathering and transport, supplied the detritus to the supra-crustal units. The major trace element data suggest that these rocks are largely derived from felsic igneous rocks, namely granitoids, with a minor contribution from intermediate sources. The carbonate rocks do not represent a wide variety of facies: dolomitic limestone, calcareous limestone, and calcaro-dolomitic chert. Calcitic and dolomitic samples show a linear increase in SiO2, regardless of their CaO/LOI ratio values, which remain relatively constant. The highest SiO2 contents are observed in the calc-dolomitic chert. Geochemical analysis of RDVD from the Ifni buttonhole determined their origin, maturity, and alteration. Major oxides decreased with higher silica content, indicating quartz control. Samples, formed under semi-arid conditions, show maturity under stable deposition. They suggest a felsic, recycled source, with moderate alteration and zircon enrichment during recycling. In the study area, limestones and dolomites serve as materials applicable in the building sector, suitable for all types of concrete. The Taliwine Formation harbors Lower Cambrian dolomites and limestones, ideal for mosaic aggregates. Described as variable in color, compact, homogeneous, very hard, and resistant to alteration, the plutonic rocks form prominent peaks. They exhibit both subalkaline characteristics in granitoids and an alkaline trend in dolerite dykes. Most samples display minimal alteration, indicating the reliability of their major element compositions for geochemical analyses. These granitoids constitute valuable deposits for ornamental and building rock purposes.

Eastern Kerdous demonstrates a polymetallic hydrothermal activity due its association with a paleorelief area. This study focuses on generating a Mineral Potential Map based on Fuzzy Logic Modelling and HyMap-Based input layers. The Relative Absorption Band Depth, Directed Principal Component Analysis, Line Density, and Mixture Tuned Matched Filtering techniques were implemented to perform 20 thematic layers. As a result, three new prospective zones were identified. Fieldwork, petrography, and XRD analysis verified the remote sensing results. Finally, this investigation highlights the significant potential of HyMap imagery for mineral exploration in inaccessible and remote parts of the western Anti-Atlas belt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The Souss region in Morocco is known nationally and internationally for its essential knowledge of traditional herbal medicine and the cultural heritage of nutrition. The endemic species Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels is an important crucial plant used by the local population to treat many diseases and prepare some authentic foods. To identify the therapeutic uses of the Argan tree [Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels] and their benefits in preparing authentic foods, the survey was conducted using semi-structured questionnaires. We have achieved 450 interviews with traditional health practitioners and knowledgeable villagers. In the region of Chtouka Aït Baha and Tiznit (Western Anti-Atlas). In parallel with this survey, we collected some old local manuscripts from conventional practitioners in the region. The data obtained were analyzed using specific ethnobotanical indices such as Use Value (UV), Fidelity Level (FL), and Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC). In parallel, we analyzed the nutritional value of some authentic foods derived the argan oil (Amlou, Tagoulla, and Labsis). All 450 interviewees use the argan oil in food or for the preparation of their authentic foods derived (Amlou, Tagoulla, and Labsis); among them, 100 persons use Argan, in addition to food, in the treatment of various diseases with UV and RFC at 1.94 and 0.22, respectively. Among eight treated diseases by argan tree, the treatment of skin and subcutaneous diseases had a very highly significant value of the FL index (98%). Similarly, the analysis of the manuscripts collected in the study area revealed an ancient therapeutic use of the argan tree. The results also show that the Argan oil extracted from the seed is used to prepare authentic foods with significant nutritional value, especially Amlou.

The giant Tizert copper deposit is considered as the largest copper resource in the western Anti-Atlas (Morocco). The site is characterized by Cu mineralization carried by malachite, chalcocite, covellite, bornite and chalcopyrite; azurite is not observed. The host rocks are mainly limestones (Formation of Tamjout Dolomite) and sandstones/siltstones (Basal Series) of the Ediacaran/Cambrian transition. The supergene enrichment is most likely related to episodes of uplift/doming (last event since 30 Ma), which triggered the exhumation of primary/hypogene mineralization (chalcopyrite, pyrite, galena, chalcocite I and bornite I), generating their oxidation and the precipitation of secondary/supergene sulfides, carbonates and Fe-oxyhydroxides. The Tizert supergene deposit mainly consists of (i) a residual patchwork of laterite rich in Fe-oxyhydroxides; (ii) a saprolite rich in malachite, or “green oxide zone” where primary structures such as stratification are preserved; (iii) a cementation zone containing secondary sulfides (covellite, chalcocite II and bornite II). The abundance of Cu carbonates results from the rapid neutralization of acidic meteoric fluids, due to oxidation of primary sulfides, by carbonate host rocks. Chlorite is also involved in the neutralization processes in the sandstones/siltstones of the Basal Series, in which supergene clays, such as kaolinite and smectites, subsequently precipitated. At Tizert, as can be highlighted in other supergene Cu-deposits around the world, azurite is absent due to low pCO2 and relatively high pH conditions. In addition to copper, Ag enrichment is also observed in weathered rocks; Fe-oxyhydroxides contain high Zn, As, and Pb contents. However, these secondary enrichments are quite low compared to Cu in the whole Tizert site, which is therefore, considered as relatively homogeneous.

Abstract: The lower Cryogenian mafic magmatism from the Igherm, Ifni and Kerdous inliers (Moroccan Western Anti-Atlas) have calc-alkaline, tholeiitic and alkaline affinities. The calc-alkaline dolerite dykes and gabbros bodies emplaced before the conglomeratic formations of the Upper Cryogenian and after the tholeiitic mafic rocks that characterize the pre-Pan-African rifting. They are similar to rocks from orogenic setting and characterized by high LILE, Th, Ce, P, Sm contents and La/Nb ratio and a low HFSE content with negative anomalies in Nb, Zr and Ti. The geodynamic environment of the sedimentary country rocks corresponds to that of a passive margin in a distensive tectonic context. The calc-alkaline affinity of these magmas can be attributed to the influence of a Palaeoproterozoic subduction zone that contributed to the enrichment of the sub-continental mantle. During the extensional event of the Pan-African orogenesis, the mantle would have produced tholeiitic, alkaline and/or transitional magmas before melting (caused by adiabatic decompression) reached the enriched sub-continental mantle. This mantle was previously enriched during the Eburnean subduction, where it would have generated calc-alkaline magmas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Four events have been identified in the Tagragra d’Akka and Tafeltast–Kerdous inliers: (i) a middle Palæoproterozoic (Orosirian, ca. 2.047Ga) event corresponding to the emplacement of calc-alkaline and peraluminous granites containing older inherited zircon (2.07–2.15Ga), (ii) an upper Palæoproterozoic (Statherian) event corresponding to the emplacement of pegmatites and porphyritic microgranites (ca. 1.76Ga), intimately associated with numerous mafic dikes assumed to be, at least partly, of the same age, (iii) an upper Neoproterozoic event corresponding to dacite dikes (600±5Ma), (iv) a Variscan (301±7Ma) hydrothermal event corresponding to the crystallization of muscovites related to Au-quartz veins. A polycyclic magmatism (Eburnian-Birimian, Pan-African and Variscan) is now evidenced in these two inliers of the western Anti-Atlas. The Pan-African orogeny is very homogeneous all along the Anti-Atlas during Neoproterozoic time. No inherited Archæan component has been found in zircons from granites or dikes. It appears that the northern border of the West African craton is an important juvenile cratonic limit submitted to periodical continental growth since 2.05Ga at least. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Aeromagnetic data were analyzed, constrained by geological and ore deposit mapping to investigate possible regions within the Igherm inlier region of the Anti-Atlas in western Morocco that are favorable for more detailed copper exploration. The aeromagnetic data were investigated by creating reduction to the pole (RTP), upward continuation and tilt-angle anomaly maps. Additionally, depths to magnetic susceptibility sources were estimated using three-dimensional Euler deconvolution and tilt-angle depth methods. The RTP map indicated several anomalous regions where magnetic maxima can be related to Paleoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic metamorphic and volcanic rocks located between the uplifted regions in the northern portion of the Igherm inlier region. The western portion of the study area is characterized by short wavelength, NE-trending magnetic maxima that are related to Pan-African orogeny volcanic units. Derivative maps indicate that the majority of the lineaments are NE-trending probably related to post Pan-African rifting. However, there are several NW- and E-trending lineaments related to the Variscan orogeny. The depths of the sources of these lineaments range between 100 m and 5200 m, with the deeper depths mainly trending toward the northeast. Using the derivative analysis, RTP, magnetically determined depth estimates and the nature of known copper deposits in the region (e.g., Tizert deposit), several regions were determined to be favorable for more detailed mineral exploration. These regions are located along the edges of Proterozoic uplifts where paleobasins containing Basal Series sediments have been affected by mainly NE-trending faults that act as conduits for deeper magmatically formed ore-rich fluids. • First detailed magnetic analysis of the Igherm region of Morocco. • First detailed analysis of copper exploration of the Igherm region. • Copper deposits are related to faults related to Proterozoic tectonics. • A magnetic derivative analysis indicated that magnetic sources are between 100 and 5200 m. • Most copper deposits are located along the edges of Proterozoic uplifts. The Ouansimi copper deposit, located South of the Kerdous inlier in Morocco, is an example of vein-type mineralization hosted in the Adoudou Formation limestone of the Lower Cambrian Taroudant Group. The copper-bearing veins are mainly controlled by Variscan NNW-trending faults and are subdivided here into Eastern, Western, and Central structures. On the basis of mineralogical, metallographic, and fluid inclusion studies, two mineralizing processes are proposed. A primary process is interpreted for the chalcopyrite, digenite, galena, sphalerite, carrollite, and pyrite with quartz and dolomite as gangue minerals. A secondary process is proposed for chalcocite, bornite, covellite, native copper, copper carbonate and oxide. Microthermometric analysis of fluid inclusions was carried out on quartz and dolomite gangues. Primary fluid inclusions trapped in quartz show the existence of fluids with temperatures of 175°C–275 °C and salinities of 10–15 wt % NaCl eq. However, fluid inclusions in dolomite indicate fluids with temperatures of 200°C–250 °C and salinities of 20–25 wt % NaCl equiv. Combining ore mineralogy and fluid inclusion microthermometry, two main hypogene sulphide mineralization stages can be distinguished in the Ouansimi copper deposit. The first Cu–Fe stage, with quartz as a gangue mineral, was related to hydrothermal fluids with moderate temperature and low salinity. The second Cu–Zn–Pb–Co–Ni–Fe stage was associated with dolomite as a gangue mineral and infilled cavities and fractures cutting quartz. This second phase was related to hydrothermal fluids with moderate temperature and high salinity. The tectonic evolution of the Ouansimi deposit was characterized by thrusting of the south limb over the north limb and by dextral and sinistral offsets of the mineralized structures along late-stage ENE-WSW-trending faults. • Ouansimi mineralized copper bodies are controlled by NNW-SSE trend faults. • Mineralization contains primary and secondary assemblage with quartz-dolomite gangue. • Primary assemblage is linked to H 2 O–NaCl–CaCl 2 hydrothermal fluid during two stages. • Copper genesis occurred by variscan thermal event then supergene and oxidation stages. • The Western Anti-Atlas copper mineralization is most likely epigenetic model.
