The title phrase “photographic enclave” expresses the condition of projects that tell about a city using a photographic medium. The article discusses three audiovisual works that use photos to portray New York and its inhabitants: Smoke by Wayne Wang and Paul Auster, Stefan Nadelman’s Terminal Bar, and the multimedia project One in 8 Million. The works represent a variety of film models (drama, documentary, interactive media), and their authors use the formal and cognitive aspects of photography in a different ways. The aim of the article is to analyze the function of photography for portraying urban communities and to see if this treatment was successful. Tytułowa „fotograficzna enklawa” wyraża kondycję projektów, które podejmując tematykę miejską opierają się na medium fotograficznym. Artykuł omawia trzy dzieła audiowizualne, które opowiadając o Nowym Jorku i jego mieszkańcach wykorzystują w tym celu zdjęcia: Dym Wayne'a Wanga i Paula Austera, Terminal Bar Stefana Nadelmana oraz projekt multimedialny One in 8 Milion. Dzieła reprezentują odmienne modele filmowe (fabuła, dokument, media interaktywne), a ich autorzy w różny sposób odwołują się do formalnych i poznawczych aspektów fotografii. Celem artykułu jest zanalizowanie, jaką funkcję pełni fotografia przy portretowaniu miejskiej społeczności oraz na ile jest to zabieg udany.

Uno de los espacios más recurrentes de las películas cinematográficas ha sido, desde el cine de los orígenes, el espacio urbano. Trenes entrando y saliendo de ciudades, calles abarrotadas... Pero también el espacio de conflicto en el primer cine narrativo (Chaplin) y en las Sinfonías de una ciudad de las primeras vanguardias. En el siglo XXI Wayne Wang –en relación directa con Paul Auster– y Wongg Kar Wai dibujan una línea de continuidad con estas tendencias del cine primitivo para contribuir a la caracterización de los personajes. The adaptation of the short story entitled “Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story” (1990) gathered the writer Paul Auster and the director Wayne Wang around a film project that allowed them to share their artistic practices in a collaborative work. This paper examines the question that underpins the narrative of the short-story by grappling with the appropriations of the real in other artistic modes. Paul Auster’s first encounter with the cinema points out the convergence between aural writing and cinematic writing, evoked through the double figure of the writer and that of the tale-teller/photographer in both the film and the short story.L’adaptation de la nouvelle « Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story » (1990) réunit l’écrivain Paul Auster et le réalisateur Wayne Wang autour d’un projet qui leur permit de croiser leurs pratiques artistiques dans un travail de collaboration. Cet article prolonge le questionnement artistique qui sous-tend le récit de la nouvelle en interrogeant les modalités de l’appropriation du réel par d’autres arts. La première rencontre entre Paul Auster et le cinéma met en relief les points de convergence entre écriture verbale et écriture cinématographique, évoqués autour de la double figure de l’écrivain et du conteur/photographe dans le film et dans la nouvelle.

This essay examines the conditions of possibility for realism in several fields of contemporary culture—literature, painting, film, and TV news. It is argued that contemporary texts mobilize novel resources for the representation of the real. Realism in these works no longer takes the form of a seemingly self-evident mirroring of the world. Instead, the work of representation unfolds along several axes—fact-finding, metadiscourse, contractual negotiation, and praxis. Accordingly, contemporary realist texts display a hybrid make-up, mingling elements of classical mimesis and postmodernism.
