The low anaerobic digestion efficiency of the solid phase separated from pre-treated sludge indicates the need to explore other suitable resource utilization pathways for sludge solid phase. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and in-depth research on the physicochemical properties of sludge solid phase. This study comprehensively analyzes the characteristics of sludge solid phase and elucidates the mechanism of sludge solid phase in the anaerobic degradation of toxic wastewater. The results show that the surface free energy of sludge solid phase after different pre-treatments is mainly contributed by Lewis acid-base hydration free energy. The distribution of proteins on the surface of sludge solid phase plays a major role in the adhesion between sludge solid particles. Metal ions in the sludge solid phase are mainly present in the exchange state, followed by the carbonate state and the organics-bound state. The sludge solid phase obtained by sludge pH 12 + 150 °C treatment has the highest conductivity (1.36 mS/m) and capacitance (25.51 μF/g), mainly due to the presence of melanoidins in the sludge solid phase, which has similar semiquinone radicals to humic acids, thus increasing conductivity. The addition of sludge solid phase promotes an increase in cumulative methane production and rate of methane production. The sludge solid phase might play a role of an auxiliary carbon source acting as an adsorbent to buffer against toxicity inhibition and facilitate electron transfer. Electrobioremediation is one of the most innovative disciplines for treating organic pollutants and it is based on the ability of electroactive bacteria to exchange electrons with electroconductive materials. Electroactive biofilters have been demonstrated to be efficient for treating urban wastewater with a low footprint; however, their application can be expanded for treating industrial wastewater containing significant concentrations (2.4 % vol ) of commercial surfactants (containing lauryl sulfate, lauryl ether sulfate, cocamydopropyl betaine, and dodecylbenzene sulfonate, among others). Our electroactive biofilter outperformed a conventional inert biofilter made of gravel for all tested conditions, reaching removal rates as high as 4.5 kg COD/m 3 bed ·day and withstood Organic Loading Rates as high as 9 Kg COD/m 3 ·d without significantly affecting removal efficiency. The biomass accumulation reduced available bed volume in the electroactive biofilter just by 39 %, while the gravel biofilter decreased by 80 %. Regarding microbial communities, anaerobic and electroactive bacteria represented a substantial proportion of the total population in the electroactive biofilter. Pseudomonas was the dominant genus, while Cupriavidus, Shewanella, Citrobacter, Desulfovibrio, and Arcobacter were potential electroactive strains found in relevant proportions. Livestock effluents are challenging to be treated owing that antibiotics and microplastics are untargeted for most biological technologies. As far, microalgal wastewater treatment is recognized as an effective technique for dealing with. In this study, a continuous-flow system was conducted over 45 days to evaluate the effectiveness of Chlamydomonas sp. JSC 4 in removing tetracycline (TCH) under the influence of polystyrene (PS). It shows that PS significantly enhanced the dissipation efficiency of TCH from livestock effluents, and 9.83 % TCH removal was increased under 5 mg/L of both TCH and PS exposure. Meanwhile, higher microalgal bioactivity was a significant factor in achieving desirable pollutants removal efficiency, as 87.14 % microalgal biomass was improved owing to reduction of oxidative stress and augmentation of photosynthesis. Importantly, the pivotal active sites, NH2 and CO, were rapidly covered via π-π interactions and hydrogen bonds during adsorption process between TCH and PS, accounting for mitigation of TCH-PS complexes toxicity and improvement of microalgal ribosome metabolism. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARBs) have been widely detected in wastewater and become a potential threat to human health. This work found that low-load single-atom copper (0.1 wt%) anchored on g-C 3 N 4 (SA-Cu/g-C 3 N 4 ) exhibited excellent ability to activate H 2 O 2 and inactivate ARBs during the photo-Fenton process. The presence of SA-Cu/g-C 3 N 4 (0.4 mg/mL) and H 2 O 2 (0.1 mM) effectively inactivated ARBs. More than 99.9999 % (6-log) of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) could be inactivated within 5 min. Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing pathogenic Escherichia coli (ESBL-E) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) were killed within 10 and 30 min, respectively. In addition, more than 5-log of these ARBs were killed within 60 min in real wastewater. Furthermore, D 2 O-labeling with Raman spectroscopy revealed that SA-Cu/g-C 3 N 4 completely suppressed the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state and reactivation of bacteria. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy results demonstrated that g-C 3 N 4 mainly produced 1 O 2 , while SA-Cu/g-C 3 N 4 simultaneously produced both 1 O 2 and •OH. The •OH and 1 O 2 cause lipid peroxidation damage to the cell membrane, resulting in the death of the bacteria. Use of high-pressure membranes is an effective means for removal of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that is less sensitive than adsorption processes to variable water quality and specific PFAS structure. This study evaluated the use of nanofiltration (NF) membranes for the removal of PFAS and industry relevant co-contaminants in semiconductor fabrication (fab) wastewater. Initial experiments using a flat sheet filtration cell determined that the NF90 (tight NF) membrane provided superior performance compared to the NF270 (loose NF) membrane, with NF90 rejection values exceeding 97 % for all PFAS evaluated, including the ultrashort trifluoromethane sulfonic acid (TFMS). Cationic fab co-contaminants diaryliodonium (DIA), triphenylsulfonium (TPS), and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) were not as highly rejected as anionic PFAS likely due to electrostatic effects. A spiral wound NF90 module was then used in a pilot system to treat a lab solution containing PFAS and co-contaminants and fab wastewater effluent. Treatment of the fab wastewater, containing high concentrations of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), including trifluoroacetic acid (TFA: 96,413 ng/L), perfluoropropanoic acid (PFPrA: 11,796 ng/L), and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA: 504 ng/L), resulted in ≥92 % rejection of all PFAS while achieving 90 % water recovery in a semi-batch configuration. Imidacloprid (IMI) is used extensively as an insecticide and poses a significant risk to both the ecological environment and human health. Biological methods are currently gaining recognition among the different strategies tested for wastewater treatment. This study focused on evaluating a recently discovered green alga, Scenedesmus sp. TXH202001, isolated from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), exhibited notable capacity for IMI removal. After an 18-day evaluation, medium IMI concentrations (50 and 100 mg/L) facilitated the growth of microalgae whereas low (5 and 20 mg/L) and high (150 mg/L) concentrations had no discernible impact. No statistically significant disparities were detected in Fv/Fm, Malonaldehyde or Superoxide dismutase across all concentrations, suggesting Scenedesmus sp. TXH202001 exhibited notable resilience and adaptability to IMI conditions. Most notably, Scenedesmus sp. TXH202001 successfully eliminated > 99 % of IMI within 18 days subjected to IMI concentrations as high as 150 mg/L, which was contingent on the environmental factor of illumination. Molecular docking was used to identify the chemical reaction sites between IMI and typical degrading enzyme CYP450. Furthermore, the study revealed that the primary path for IMI removal was biodegradation and verified that the toxicity of the degraded product was lower than parent IMI in Caenorhabditis elegans. Struvite recovery from wastewater offers a sustainable phosphorus and nitrogen source, yet it harbors the challenge of variable antibiotic residues, notably oxytetracycline (OTC), increasing the ecological risk during subsequent use. Despite the need, mechanisms behind these residues and regulatory solutions remain obscure. We characterized OTC in recovered struvite and showed that increased dissolved organic matter (DOM) enhanced OTC accumulation, while PO 4 3- suppressed it. NH 4 + modulated OTC levels through the saturation index (SI), with a rise in SI significantly reducing OTC content. Additionally, excess Mg 2+ formed complexes with OTC and DOM (humic acid, HA), leading to increased residue levels. Complexation was stronger at higher pH, whereas electrostatic interactions dominated at lower pH. The primary binding sites for antibiotics and DOM were Mg-OH and P-OH groups in struvite. OTC's dimethylamino, amide, and phenolic diketone groups primarily bound to struvite and DOM, with the carboxyl group of DOM serving as the main binding site. Mg 2+ complexation was the primary pathway for OTC transportation, whereas electrostatic attraction of PO 4 3- dominated during growth. Controlling magnesium (Mg) dosage and adjusting pH were effective for reducing OTC in recovered products. The inefficient nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands (CWs) can be attributed to insufficient carbon sources for low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio wastewater. In this study, sugarcane bagasse fermentation liquid (SBFL) was used as a supplemental carbon source in intermittently aerated CWs to enhance nitrogen removal. The impact of different regulated influent C/N ratios on nitrogen removal and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions was investigated. Results demonstrated that SBFL addition significantly enhanced the denitrification capacity, resulting in faster NO 3 - -N removal compared to sucrose. Moreover, intermittently aerated CWs significantly improved NH 4 + -N removal efficiency compared to non-aerated CWs. The highest total nitrogen removal efficiency (98.3 %) was achieved at an influent C/N ratio of 5 in intermittently aerated CWs with SBFL addition. The addition of SBFL resulted in a reduction of N 2 O emissions by 17.8 %-43.7 % compared to sucrose. All CWs exhibited low CH 4 emissions, with SBFL addition (0.035-0.066 mg·m -2 h -1 ) resulting in lower emissions compared to sucrose. Additionally, higher abundance of denitrification (nirK, nirS and nosZ) genes as well as more abundant denitrifying bacteria were shown in CWs of SBFL inputs. This study aimed to investigate the purification of radioactive thorium (Th 4+ ) by Chlorella vulgaris in aquatic environments. Single-factor experiments and response surface optimization tests identified optimal purification conditions. The purification and metabolic response mechanisms of Chlorella to Th 4+ were elucidated using physiological and biochemical analyses, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) analysis, and metabolomic profiling. Increases in the Th 4+ concentration caused Chlorella to self-flocculate, significantly improving the Th 4+ purification efficiency. Under optimal conditions, the Th 4+ purification efficiency for Th 4+ in wastewater by Chlorella stabilized between 94.3 % and 98.2 %. Morphological analysis revealed that the purified Th 4+ existed mainly in a stable residual state. Chlorella efficiently purified wastewater during treatment by regulating environmental pH, performing redox reactions, and utilizing extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) to interact with Th 4+ . Metabolomic analysis indicated that Chlorella adapted to the Th 4+ -contaminated environment and enhanced its purification function by adjusting the synthesis of metabolites, such as carbohydrates, nucleotides, and amino acids. Chlorella demonstrated a remarkable self-flocculation phenomenon and a high-efficiency purification capability for Th 4+ , offering new possibilities for environmental remediation. Its purification mechanism involves environmental regulation, redox reactions, and complex metabolic adjustments. To address the increasing issue of antibiotic wastewater, this study applied a static magnetic field (SMF) to the activated sludge process to increase the efficiency of tetracycline (TC) removal from swine wastewater and to reveal its enhanced mechanisms. The results demonstrated that the SMF-modified activated sludge process could achieve almost complete TC removal at sludge loading rates of 0.3 mg TC/g MLSS/d. Analysis of zeta potential and extracellular polymeric substances composition of the activated sludge revealed that SMF increased electrostatic interactions between TC and activated sludge and made activated sludge has much more binding sites, finally resulting in the increased TC biosorption. Metagenomic analysis showed that SMF promoted the enrichment of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, TC-degrading bacteria, and aromatic compounds-degrading bacteria; it also enhanced ammonia monooxygenase- and cytochrome P450-mediated TC metabolism while upregulating functional genes associated with oxidase, reductase, and dehydrogenase - all contributing to increased TC biodegradation. Additionally, SMF mitigated the enrichment and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) by decreasing the abundance of potential hosts of ARGs and inhibiting the upregulation of genes encoding ABC transporters and putative transposase. Weak magnetic field (WMF) has been recognized to promote biological denitrification processes; however, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored, hindering the optimization of its effectiveness. Here, we systematically investigated the effects of WMF on denitrification performance, enzyme activity, microbial community, and metaproteome in packed bed bioreactors treating high nitrate wastewater under different WMF intensities and C:N ratios. Results showed that WMFs significantly promoted denitrification by consistently stimulating the activities of denitrifying reductases and NAD + /NADH biosynthesis across decreasing C:N ratios. Reductases and electron transfer enzymes involved in denitrification were overproduced due to the significantly enriched overexpression of ferromagnetic ion-containing (FIC) metalloproteins. We also observed WMFs' intensity-dependent selective pressure on microbial community structures despite the effects being limited compared to those caused by changing C:N ratios. By coupling genome-centric metaproteomics and structure prediction, we found the dominant denitrifier, Halomonas, was outcompeted by Pseudomonas and Azoarcus under WMFs, likely due to its structural deficiencies in iron uptake, suggesting that advantageous ferromagnetic ion acquisition capacity was necessary to satisfy the substrate demand for FIC metalloprotein overproduction. Fluorinated pharmaceuticals pollution has become an ever-increasing environmental concern due to its negative impacts. Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation system is a desirable approach to tackle the pollution problems. However, photogenerated charge separation and interfacial mass transfer are the main bottlenecks for improving the PEC degradation performance. Herein, we report a TiO 2 photoanode with tuned (101)/(110) facets in situ grown on a Ti mesh substrate for PEC degradation of fluorinated pharmaceuticals. The exposure of (101) facets facilitates efficient photogenerated charge separation and the desorption of generated •OH radical. Besides, the three-dimensional (3D) architecture of photoanode promotes macroscopic mass transfer. This system performed complete defluorination of 5-fluorouracil and more than 75 % total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency. The apparent reaction rate constant of high (101) facet-exposed TiO 2 grown on Ti mesh is up to 6.96 h -1 , 6‒fold faster than that of photoanode with low (101) facet-exposed TiO 2 grown on Ti foil. It is demonstrated that a large-sized PEC system of 1200 cm 2 can degrade 100 L of synthetic fluorinated pharmaceutical wastewater with more than 80 % elimination efficiency. Algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) composed of microalgae and aerobic granular sludge, is a sustainable and promising technology for wastewater treatment. However, the formation mechanism of ABGS has not been clearly defined, and the direct formation of ABGS in saline wastewater has rarely been investigated. This study proposed novel insights into the granulation process of ABGS by assembling the algal barrier, which was successfully cultivated directly in saline wastewater. The results concluded that ABGS with the algal barrier maintained a higher biomass (MLSS of 7046 ± 61 mg/L), larger particle sizes (1.21 ± 0.06 mm), and better settleability (SVI 30 of 46 ± 1 mL/g), enabling efficient pollutants removal. Soluble microbial products (SMP) were found to be closely related to the emergence of the algal barrier. In addition, under salinity stress, the high production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS, 133.70 ± 1.40 mg/g VSS), specifically TB-EPS (90.29 ± 1.12 mg/g VSS), maintained a crucial role in the formation of ABGS. Further analysis indicated that biofilm producing bacteria Pseudofulvimonas and filamentous eukaryote Streptophyta were the key players in ABGS formation with the algal barrier. Furthermore, the enhancement of key genes and enzymes involved in nitrogen metabolism, TCA cycle, and polysaccharide metabolism suggested a more robust protective effect provided by the algal barrier. Recycled wastewater effluent irrigation and implementing limited irrigation rates are two promising strategies for water conservation in agriculture. However, one major challenge is the accumulation and translocation of Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) from recycled water to crops. This study investigated the effects of UV persulfate (UV/PS) treatment of recycled water and limited irrigation rate on PPCPs accumulation and physiological responses of St. Augustine turfgrass via a 14-week field trial. Carbamazepine (CBZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), triclosan (TCS), fluoxetine (FLX) and diclofenac (DCF) were spiked at 0.1-1.5 µg/L into recycled water and two limited irrigation rates corresponding to 60 % and 80 % of reference Evapotranspiration (ET o ) were applied. Results showed that UV/PS removed 60 % of CBZ and > 99 % of other PPCPs from recycled water. Irrigation with UV/PS treated recycled water resulted in approximately a 60 % reduction in CBZ accumulation and complete removal of SMX, DCF, FLX and TCS in both turfgrass leaves and roots. A more limited irrigation rate at 60 % ET o resulted in a higher accumulation of CBZ accumulation compared to 80 % ET o . Similarly, the canopy temperature increased under 60 % ET o irrigation rate compared to 80 % ET o , suggesting that turfgrass under 60 % ET o was more prone to water stress. Applying a 60 % ET o irrigation rate was not sufficient to maintain the turfgrass quality in the acceptable range. A negative correlation between the visual quality and cumulative mass of PPCPs in turfgrass leaves at different irrigation rates was observed, yet irrigation rate was the major driver of turfgrass overall quality and health. As important organic components in water environments, effluent organic matters (EfOMs) from wastewater treatment plants are widely present in Mn-rich environments or engineered treatment systems. The redox interaction between manganese oxides (MnO x ) and EfOMs can lead to their structural changes, which are crucial for ensuring the safety of water environments. Herein, the reactivities of MnO x with EfOMs were evaluated, and it was found that MnO x with high specific surface area, active high-valent manganese content and lattice oxygen content (i.e., amorphous MnO 2 ) possessed stronger oxidizing ability towards EfOMs. Accompanying by EfOMs oxidation, Mn(IV) and Mn(III) were reduced into Mn(II), with Mn(III) as the significant active species. Through molecular-level transformation analysis by ultrahigh mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), the highly reactive compounds in EfOMs were clearly determined to be that with more aromatic and unsaturated structures, especially lignin-like compounds (the highest content in EfOMs (over 60 %)). EfOMs were oxidized by amorphous MnO 2 into products with lower humification index (0.60 vs. 0.46), smaller apparent molecular weight (386.94 Da vs. 368.68 Da), and higher biodegradability (BOD 5 /COD: 0.12 vs. 0.78). Recent escalating concerns surrounding textile wastewater pollution and the urgent need for sustainable treatment solutions to mitigate its environmental impact. This study investigates the multifaceted effects of Spirulina platensis (SP) cultivation in textile wastewater from two different sources (TWW1 and TWW2), focusing on growth kinetics, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and nutrient removal percentage, and seed germination enhancement. Results showed that SP exhibited comparable growth performance in TWW1 and TWW2 to the control, indicating its potential for sustainable wastewater treatment. Moreover, maximum COD removal percentages were achieved, reaching 62.59 ± 1.88 % for TWW1 and 46.68 ± 1.40 % for TWW2 on day 5. The COD removal process aligns best with the first-order kinetic model. Nutrient removal rates showed decreasing trends over time, with maximum phosphate removal percentages of 36.42 ± 0.73 % for TWW1 and 62.18 ± 1.24 % for TWW2, and maximum ammonia removal percentages of 59.34 ± 1.18 % for TWW1 and 69.31 ± 1.39 % for TWW2. FTIR analysis confirmed pollutant removal-induced changes in algal biomass functional groups. Seed germination studies indicated enhanced shoot and root development of vigna radiatas using treated TWW1 and TWW2 compared to the control, suggesting potential applications for irrigation. An increase in the lipid & carbohydrate content post-treatment was observed and it would be suitable for biofuel production. Offshore aquaculture's explosive growth improves the public food chain while also unavoidably adding new pollutants to the environment. Consequently, the protection of coastal marine eco-systems depends on the efficient treatment of wastewater from marine aquaculture. For the sulfamethazine (SMZ) of representative sulfonamides and total organic pollutants removal utilizing in-situ high salinity, this work has established an inventive and systematic treatment process coupled with iron-electrode electrochemical and ultrafiltration. Additionally, the activated dithionite (DTN) was being used in the electrochemical and ultrafiltration processes with electricity/varivalent iron (Fe II /Fe III ) and ceramic membrane (CM), respectively, indicated by the notations DTN@iron-electrode/EO-CM. Quenching experiments and ESR detection have identified plenty of reactive species including SO 4 ·- , ·OH, 1 O 2 , and O 2 ·- , for the advanced treatment. In addition, the mass spectrometry (MS) and the Gaussian simulation calculation for these primary reaction sites revealed the dominate SMZ degradation mechanisms, including cleavage of S-N bond, hydroxylation, and Smile-type rearrangement in DTN@iron-electrode/EO process. The DTN@iron-electrode/EO effluent also demonstrated superior membrane fouling mitigation in terms of the CM process, owing to its higher specific flux. XPS and SEM confirmed the reducing membrane fouling, which showed the formation of a loose and porous cake layer. In an attempt to discover and characterize the plethora of xenobiotic substances, this study investigates chemical compounds released into the environment with wastewater effluents. A novel non-targeted screening methodology based on ultra-high resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry and nanoflow ultra-high performance liquid chromatography together with a newly optimized data-processing pipeline were applied to effluent samples from two state-of-the-art and one small wastewater treatment facility. In total, 785 molecular structures were obtained, of which 38 were identified as single compounds, while 480 structures were identified at a putative level. Most of these substances were therapeutics and drugs, present as parent compounds and metabolites. With the burgeoning growth of the livestock and aquaculture industries, antibiotic residues in treated wastewater have become a serious ecological threat. Traditional biological wastewater treatment technologies-while effective for removing conventional pollutants, such as organic carbon, ammonia and phosphate-struggle to eliminate emerging contaminants, notably antibiotics. Recently, the use of microalgae has emerged as a sustainable and promising approach for the removal of antibiotics due to their non-target status, rapid growth and carbon recovery capabilities. This review aims to analyse the current state of antibiotic removal from wastewater using algae-bacteria symbiosis systems and provide valuable recommendations for the development of livestock/aquaculture wastewater treatment technologies. It (1) summarises the biological removal mechanisms of typical antibiotics, including bioadsorption, bioaccumulation, biodegradation and co-metabolism; (2) discusses the roles of intracellular regulation, involving extracellular polymeric substances, pigments, antioxidant enzyme systems, signalling molecules and metabolic pathways; (3) analyses the role of treatment facilities in facilitating algae-bacteria symbiosis, such as sequencing batch reactors, stabilisation ponds, membrane bioreactors and bioelectrochemical systems; and (4) provides insights into bottlenecks and potential solutions. Conventional methods, such as freshwater dilution and ammonia stripping, have been widely employed for microalgae-based piggery wastewater (PW) treatment, but they cause high freshwater consumption and intensive ammonia loss, respectively. This present work developed a novel fast microbial nitrogen-assimilation technology by integrating nitrogen starvation, zeolite-based adsorption, pH control, and co-culture of microalgae-yeast for the PW treatment. Among them, the nitrogen starvation accelerated the nitrogen removal and shortened the treatment period, but it could not improve the tolerance level of microalgal cells to ammonia toxicity based on oxidative stress. Therefore, zeolite was added to reduce the initial total ammonia-nitrogen concentration to around 300 mg/L by ammonia adsorption. Slowly releasing ammonia at the later phase maintained the total ammonia-nitrogen concentration in the PW. However, the pH increase could cause lots of ammonia loss air and pollution and inhibit the desorption of ammonia from zeolite and the growth and metabolism of microalgae during the microalgae cultivation. Thus, the highest biomass yield (3.25 g/L) and nitrogen recovery ratio (40.31%) were achieved when the pH of PW was controlled at 6.0. After combining the co-cultivation of microalgae-yeast, the carbon-nitrogen co-assimilation and the alleviation of pH fluctuation further enhanced the nutrient removal and nitrogen migration to high-protein biomass. We compared the ability of one emergent (Sagittaria montevidensis), two floating (Salvinia minima and Lemna gibba), and one heterophyllous species (Myriophyllum aquaticum) to simultaneously remove sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, levofloxacin, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, doxycycline, azithromycin, amoxicillin, and meropenem from wastewater in a mesocosm-scale constructed wetland over 28 days. Antibiotic concentrations in plants and effluent were analyzed using an LC-MS/MS to assess the removal rates and phytoremediation capacities. M. aquaticum did not effectively mitigate contamination due to poor tolerance and survival in effluent conditions. S. minima and L. gibba demonstrated superior efficiency, reducing the antibiotic concentrations to undetectable levels within 14 days, while S. montevidensis achieved this result by day 28. Floating macrophytes emerge as the preferable choice for remediation of antibiotics compared to emergent and heterophyllous species. Antibiotics were detected in plant tissues at concentrations ranging from 0.32 to 29.32 ng g -1 fresh weight, highlighting macrophytes' ability to uptake and accumulate these contaminants. Conversely, non-planted systems exhibited a maximum removal rate of 65%, underscoring the persistence of these molecules in natural environments, even after the entire experimental period. Additionally, macrophytes improved effluent quality regardless of species by reducing total soluble solids and phosphate concentrations and mitigating ecotoxicological effects. This study underscores the potential of using macrophytes in wastewater treatment plants to enhance overall efficiency and prevent environmental contamination by antibiotics, thereby mitigating the harmful impact on biota and antibiotic resistance. Exploring highly efficient ultrasound-triggered catalysts is pivotal for various areas. Herein, we presented that Ba 2+ doped brookite TiO 2 nanorod (TiO 2 : Ba) with polarization-induced charge separation is a candidate. The replacement of Ba 2+ for Ti 4+ not only induced significant lattice distortion to induce polarization but also created oxygen vacancy defects for facilitating the charge separation, leading to high-efficiency reactive oxygen species (ROS) evolution in the piezo-catalytic processes. Furthermore, the piezocatalytic ability to degrade dye wastewater demonstrates a rate constant of 0.172 min -1 and achieves a 100 % antibacterial rate at a low dose for eliminating E. coli. The presence of harmful substances such as dyes in water systems poses a direct threat to the quality of people's lives and other organisms living in the ecosystem. Orange G (OG) is considered a hazardous dye. The existing paper attempts to evaluate a low-cost adsorbent for the effective removal of OG dye. The developed adsorbent Polyaniline@Hydroxyapatite extracted from Cilus Gilberti fish Scale (PANI@FHAP) was elaborated through the application of the in situ chemical polymerization method to incorporate PANI on the surface of naturally extracted hydroxyapatite FHAP. The good synthesis of PANI@FHAP was evaluated through multiple techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM/EDS), Fourier Transforms Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) coupled with thermal differential analysis (DTA) analysis. The results reveal a highly ordered disposition of PANI chains on FHAP, resulting in a well-coated FHAP in the PANI matrix. Furthermore, the presence of functional groups on the surface of PANI such as amine (-NH 2 ) and imine (=NH) groups would facilitate the removal of OG dye from contaminated water. The adsorption of OG onto PANI@FHAP was conducted in batch mode and optimized through response surface methodology coupled with box-Behnken design (RSM/BBD) to investigate the effect of time, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration. The outcomes proved that OG adsorption follows a quadratic model (R 2  = 0.989). The kinetic study revealed that the adsorption of OG fits the pseudo-second-order model. On the other hand, the isotherm study declared that the Freundlich model is best suited to the description of OG adsorption. For thermodynamic study, the adsorption of OG is spontaneous in nature and exothermic. Furthermore, the regeneration-reusability study indicates that PANI@FHAP could be regenerated and reused up to five successive cycles. Based on the FTIR spectrum of PANI@FHAP after OG adsorption, the mechanism governing OG adsorption is predominantly driven by π-π interaction, electrostatic interaction, and hydrogen bonding interactions. Integrated aquaculture wastewater treatment systems (IAWTSs) are widely used in treating aquaculture wastewater with the aeration-microalgae unit serving as an important component. In this study, we artificially constructed an IAWTS and applied two aeration-microalgae methods: ordinary aeration or ozone nanobubbles (ONBs) with microalgae (Nannochloropsis oculata). The impact of N.oculata and ONBs on the removal performance of nutrients and the underlying micro-ecological mechanisms were investigated using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The results demonstrated that the combined use of ONBs and N.oculata exhibited superior purification effects with 78.25%, 76.59% and 86.71% removal of COD Mn , TN and TP. N.oculata played a pivotal role as the primary element in wastewater purification, while ONBs influenced nutrient dynamics by affecting both N.oculata and bacterial communities. N.oculata actively shaped bacterial communities, with a specific focus on nitrogen and phosphorus cycling in the micro-environment remodeled by ONBs. Rare bacterial communities displayed heightened activity in response to the changes in N.oculata, ONBs, and nutrient levels. This paper investigated the operational characteristics and self-regulation mechanism of the partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) granular system under the stress of oxytetracycline (OTC), an emerging pollutant that accumulates in municipal wastewater treatment plants through various pathways, posing significant challenges for its future promotion in engineering applications. The results indicated that OTC concentrations below 100 mg/L intensified its short-term inhibition on the PD/A granular sludge system, decreasing functional bacterial activity, while between 150 and 300 mg/L, PD's NO 3 - -N to NO 2 - -N conversion ability diminished, and Anammox activity was significantly suppressed. Under long-term high OTC stress (20-30 mg/L), nitrogen removal suffered, and batch tests revealed significant inhibition of PD's NO 3 - -N to NO 2 - -N conversion, dropping from 73.77 % to 50.17 %. Anammox bacteria activity sharply declined from 1.81 to 0.39 mg N/gVSS/h under OTC stress. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content rose from 185.39 to 210.86 mg/gVSS, indicating PD/A sludge's self-protection mechanism. However, EPS content fell due to cell lysis at high OTC (30 mg/L). The decreasing relative abundance of Candidatus_Brocadia (2.32 % to 0.93 %) and Thaure (12.63 % to 7.82 %) was a key factor in the gradual deterioration of denitrification performance. The edible plant oils production is associated with the release of different types of by-products. The latter represent cheap and available substrates to produce valuable compounds, such as flavours and fragrances, biologically active compounds and bio-based polymers. Elizabethkingia meningoseptica Oleate hydratases (Em_OhyA) can selectively catalyze the conversion of unsaturated fatty acids, specifically oleic acid, into hydroxy fatty acids, which find different industrial applications. In this study, Design-of-experiment (DoE) strategy was used to screen and identify conditions for reaching high yields in the reaction carried out by Escherichia coli whole-cell carrying the recombinant enzyme Em_OhyA using Waste Cooking Oils (WCO)-derived free fatty acids (FFA) as substrate. The identified reaction conditions for high oleic acid conversion were also tested on untreated triglycerides-containing substrates, such as pomace oil, sunflower oil, olive oil and oil mill wastewater (OMW), combining the triglyceride hydrolysis by the lipase from Candida rugosa and the E. coli whole-cell containing Em_OhyA for the production of hydroxy fatty acids. When WCO, sunflower oil and OMW were used as substrate, the one-pot bioconversion led to an increase of oleic acid conversion compared to the standard reaction. The sustainability of wastewater treatment plants poses significant challenges for developing countries, necessitating substantial investment for operation and maintenance. Biofilm reactors seeded with specific species of microorganisms were investigated under controlled environmental conditions. However, the performance evaluation of such reactors under natural conditions remains largely underexplored. This study investigated wastewater treatment capabilities of bench-scale fixed bed biofilm reactors, employing various species (Wastewater Microbes, Pseudomonas, Algae, and a co-culture of Algae and Pseudomonas). The reactors (Treatments and Control) were filled with 28 mm nominal-size local aggregates as packing media, operated under different contact times, and subjected to varying concentrations of heavy metals (Zn, Cd). To assess the reactor performances, the Bland-Altman Plot and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal kinetics were evaluated. The results revealed that the reactor initiated with a co-culture exhibited the optimal COD removal efficiency, reaching 84 ± 1 %. The reactor initially seeded with wastewater microbes exhibited the highest heavy metal elimination, achieving 94 ± 1 % and 88 ± 1 % removal for Zn and Cd respectively. The wastewater-seeded reactor demonstrated the zero-order COD removal kinetic coefficient (k) of 46.41 mg/L/h at an average influent COD concentration of 558 mg/L at 10 h contact time. While Pseudomonas-seeded reactor demonstrated k = 0.73 mg/L/h at 20 h contact time with 69 mg/L influent COD and heavy metal concentrations Zn = 26 mg/L and Cd = 3.57 mg/L. The findings of this study suggest that variations in environmental conditions, contact time, and heavy metal concentration have minimal impact on the pollutant removal efficacy of the reactors, and provide robust evidence for their viability as a sustainable alternative in municipal wastewater treatment. Background: New psychoactive substances (NPS) are of public health concern due to their sporadic proliferation and the dearth of information on toxicity when consumed. In addition to seized data from forensic and toxicology reporting, wastewater analysis serves as a complimentary tool for NPS surveillance. A method to detect 71 NPS by simple filtration followed by liquid-chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was developed to detect multiclass NPS consisting of arylcyclohexylamines, designer benzodiazepines, synthetic cannabinoids, synthetic opioids, phenethylamines, synthetic cathinones, tryptamines, and indole alkaloids., Results: In this work, the influential factors for electrospray ionisation were identified and optimised using the fractional factorial design and face-centred central composite design, respectively. The filtration loss during sample clean-up was assessed for all compounds. The final method was validated and applied to wastewater collected from a music festival held in Queensland in 2022. The validated method had linearity between 0.5 ng L -1 and 5000 ng L -1 , the limit of quantification (LOQ) ranges from 0.6 ng L -1 to 70 ng L -1 , precision within ±20 %, accuracy ranges from 70 % to 120 %, and matrix effect ranges from soft (0 %-20 %) to medium (20 %-50 %) for the majority of the compounds. Peroxidase-like (POD-like) as a kind of new Fenton-like catalyst can effectively activate H 2 O 2 to degrade organic pollutants in water, but improving the catalytic activity and stability of POD-like remains a challenging task. Here, we synthesized a novel dual single-atom nanoenzyme (DSAzyme) FeMn/N-CNTs with Fe-N 4 and Mn-N 4 bimetallic single-atom active centers by mimicking the active centers of natural enzymes and taking advantage of the synergistic effect between the dual metals. FeMn/N-CNTs DSAzyme showed significantly enhanced POD-like activity compared to monometallic-loaded Fe/N-CNTs and Mn/N-CNTs. Within the FeMn/N-CNTs/H 2 O 2 system, bisphenol A (BPA) could be removed 100 % within 20 min. DFT calculations show that Mn-N 4 in FeMn/N-CNTs can readily adsorb negatively charged BPA molecules and capture electrons. Meanwhile, Fe-N 4 sites can easily adsorb H 2 O 2 molecules, leading to their activation and splitting into strongly oxidizing hydroxyl radicals (·OH). Throughout this process, electrons are continuously recycled in BPA → Mn-N 4 → Fe-N 4 → H 2 O 2 , effectively promoting the regeneration of Fe 2+ . Membranes for wastewater treatment should ideally exhibit sustainable high permeate production, enhanced pollutant removal, and intrinsic physical rejection. In this study, CoFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 serves as a non-homogeneous phase catalyst; it is combined with polyether sulfone membranes via liquid-induced phase separation to simultaneously sustain membrane permeability and enhance antibiotic pollutant degradation. The prepared catalytic membranes have higher pure water flux (329.34 L m -2 h -1 ) than pristine polyethersulfone membranes (219.03 L m -2 h -1 ), as well as higher mean pore size, porosity, and hydrophilicity. Under a moderate transmembrane pressure (0.05 MPa), tetracycline (TC) in synthetic and real wastewater was degraded by the optimal catalytic membrane by 72.7 % and 91.2 %, respectively. Owing to the generation of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the Fenton-like reaction process, the catalytic membrane could exclude the natural organics during the H 2 O 2 backwash step and selectively promote fouling degradation in the membrane channel. The irreversible fouling ratio of the catalyzed membrane was significantly reduced, and the flux recovery rate increased by up to 91.6 %. Currently, there is uncertainty about emissions of pharmaceuticals into larger closed ecosystems that are at risk such as the Baltic Sea. There is an increasing need for selecting the right strategies on advanced wastewater treatment. This study analysed 35 pharmaceuticals and iodinated X-ray contrast media in effluents from 82 Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) across Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden. Measured concentrations from Finland and Denmark were compared to predicted effluent concentrations using different levels of refinement. The concentrations predicted by the Total Residue Approach, as proposed by the European Medicines Agency, correlated with R 2 of 0.18 and 0.031 to measured ones for Denmark and Finland, respectively and the predicted data were significantly higher than the measured ones. These correlations improved substantially to R 2 of 0.72 and 0.74 after adjusting for estimated human excretion rates and further to R 2 = 0.91 and 0.78 with the inclusion of removal rates in WWTPs. Temporal analysis of compound variations in a closely monitored WWTP showed minimal fluctuation over days and weeks for most compounds but revealed weekly shifts in iodinated X-ray contrast media due to emergency-only operations at X-ray clinics during weekends and an abrupt seasonal change for gabapentin. Neonicotinoids pose significant environmental risks due to their widespread use, persistence, and challenges in elimination. This study explores the effectiveness of Fe/Mn biochar in enhancing the removal efficiency of neonicotinoids in recirculating constructed wetlands (RCWs). Results demonstrated that incorporating Fe/Mn biochar into RCWs significantly improved the removal of COD, NH 4 + -N, TN, TP, imidacloprid (IMI), and acetamiprid (ACE). However, the simultaneous presence of IMI and ACE in the RCWs hindered the elimination of NH 4 + -N, TN, and TP from wastewater. The enhanced removal of nutrients and pollutants by Fe/Mn biochar was attributed to its promotion of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling in RCWs, along with its facilitation of the adsorption and biodegradation of IMI and ACE. Metagenomics analysis demonstrated that Fe/Mn biochar altered the structure and diversity of microbial communities in RCWs. A total of 17 biodegradation genes (BDGs) and two pesticide degradation genes (PDGs) were identified within RCWs, with Fe/Mn biochar significantly increasing the abundance of BDGs such as cytochrome P450. Emerging contaminants pose a potential risk to aquatic ecosystems in the Pearl River Basin, China, owing to the high population density and active industry. This study investigated samples from eight sewage treatment plants, and five surface water bodies of related watersheds. To screen the risk of emerging contaminants (ECs), and clarify their sources, this study calculated the risk quotient of detected chemical and performed source identification/apportionment using the positive matrix factorization method. In total, 149 organic pollutants were identified. Pharmaceuticals showed significant concentrations in sewage treatment plant samples (120.87 ng/L), compared with surface water samples (1.13 ng/L). The ecological risk assessment identified three chemicals with a heightened risk to aquatic organisms: fipronil sulfide, caffeine, and roxithromycin. Four principal sources of contaminants were identified: pharmaceutical wastewater, domestic sewage, medical effluent, and agricultural runoff. Pharmaceutical wastewater was the primary contributor (60.4 %), to the cumulative EC concentration and to ECs in sewage treatment plant effluent. Agricultural drainage was the main source of ECs in surface water. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) serve as the main destination of many wastes containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Here, we investigated the occurrence and transformation of PFAS and their transformation products (TPs) in wastewater treatment systems using high-resolution mass spectrometry-based target, suspect, and non-target screening approaches. The results revealed the presence of 896 PFAS and TPs in aqueous and sludge phases, of which 687 were assigned confidence levels 1-3 (46 PFAS and 641 TPs). Cyp450 metabolism and environmental microbial degradation were found to be the primary metabolic transformation pathways for PFAS within WWTPs. An estimated 52.3 %, 89.5 %, and 13.6 % of TPs were believed to exhibit persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity effects, respectively, with a substantial number of TPs posing potential health risks. Notably, the length of the fluorinated carbon chain in PFAS and TPs was likely associated with increased hazard, primarily due to the influence of biodegradability. Ultimately, two high riskcompounds were identified in the effluent, including one PFAS (Perfluorobutane sulfonic acid) and one enzymatically metabolized TP (23-(Perfluorobutyl)tricosanoic acid@BTM0024_cyp450). It is noteworthy that the toxicity of some TPs exceeded that of their parent compounds. Extracellular electron transfer was essential for degrading recalcitrant pollutants by anaerobic digestion (AD). Therefore, existing studies improved AD efficiency by enhancing the electron transfer from microbes-to-pollutants or inter-microbes. This study synthesized a novel Fe, N co-doped biochar (Fe, N-BC), which could enhance both the microbes-to-pollutants and inter-microbes electron transfer in AD. Detailed characterization data indicated that Fe, N-BC has an ordered mesoporous structure, high specific surface area (463.46 m 2 /g), and abundant redox functional groups (Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ , pyrrolic-N), which translate into excellent biocompatibility and electrochemical properties of Fe, N-BC. By adding Fe, N-BC, the stability and efficiency of the medium-temperature AD system in the treatment of methyl orange (MO) wastewater were improved: obtained a high degradation efficiency of MO (96.8 %) and enhanced the methane (CH 4 ) production by 65 % compared to the control group. Meanwhile, Fe, N-BC reduced the accumulation of volatile fatty acids in the AD system, and the activity of anaerobic granular sludge electron transport system and coenzyme F 420 was enhanced. In addition, Fe, N-BC showed positive enrichment of azo dyes decolorization bacteria (Georgenia) and direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) synergistic partners (Syntrophobacter, Methanosarcina). Overall, the rapid degradation of MO and enhanced CH 4 production in AD systems by Fe, N-BC is associated with enhancing two electronic pathways, i.e., microbes to MO and DIET between syntrophic bacteria and methanogenic archaea. This study introduced an enhanced "two-pathways of electron transfer" theory, realized by Fe, N-BC. With the increasing demand for heavy metals due to the advancement of industrial activities, large proportions of heavy metals have been discharged into aquatic ecosystems, causing serious harm to human health and the environment. Existing physical and chemical methods for recovering heavy metals from wastewater encounter challenges, such as low efficiency, high processing costs, and potential secondary pollution. In this study, we developed a novel approach by engineering the endogenous sulphur metabolic pathway of Yarrowia lipolytica, providing it with the ability to produce approximately 550 ppm of sulphide. Subsequently, sulphide-producing Y. lipolytica was used for the first time in heavy metal remediation. The engineered strain exhibited a high capacity to remove various heavy metals, especially achieving over 90 % for cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and lead (Pb). This capacity was consistent when applied to both synthetic and actual wastewater samples. Microscopic analyses revealed that sulphide-mediated biological precipitation of metal sulphides on the cell surface is responsible for their removal. The presence of nanoplastics (NPs) in wastewater poses a considerable risk to ecosystems. Although constructed wetlands (CWs) have the potential to removal NPs, their efficiency is limited by insufficient consideration of ecosystem integrity. Herein, three typical benthic fauna (Corbicula fluminea, Chironomus riparius and Tubifex tubifex) were added to CWs to improve the ecological integrity of CWs, and further enhance the ecological benefits. Results indicated that the addition of C. fluminea, C. riparius and T. tubifex increased NPs removal by 19.14 %, 17.02 %, and 15.76 % than that without benthic faunas, respectively. Based on fluorescence signal analysis, the presence of benthic fauna could intake NPs, and enhanced the adsorption of NPs by plants. The addition of C. fluminea significantly increased catalase (1541.82 ± 41.35 U/g), glutathione S-transferase (0.34 ± 0.02 U/g), and superoxide dismutase (116.33 ± 6.91 U/g) activities (p < 0.05) as a defense mechanism against NPs-induced oxidative stress. Metagenomic analysis revealed that the abundances of key enzymes involved in glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and polystyrene metabolism pathways were increased when C. fluminea was added, corresponding to the microbial degradation of NPs. While microbial technologies, which are considered to be environmentally friendly, have great potential for the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from mining wastewater, their applications have been restricted due to a lack of efficient biosorbents. In this study, a strain of Pseudomonas psychrotolerans isolated from yttrium-enriched mine soil was used to recover yttrium (Y(III)) from rare-earth mining wastewater. At an initial Y(III) dose of 50 mg L -1 , the amount of Y(III) adsorbed by P. psychrotolerans reached 99.9 % after 24 h. Various characterization techniques revealed that P. psychrotolerans adsorbed Y(III) mainly through complexation of oxygen-containing functional groups and electrostatic interactions. A high level of adsorption efficiency (>99.9 %) was maintained after five consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles, indicating that P. psychrotolerans was highly reusable. While the efficiency of adsorbing Y(III) by P. psychrotolerans decreased (34.4 %) in actual rare earth mining wastewater, selectivity toward other REEs (≤ 18.4 %) was still observed. Pesticides pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems due to their persistent nature and adverse effects on biota. The increased detection of pesticides in various water bodies has prompted research into their toxicological impacts and potential remediation strategies. However, addressing this issue requires the establishment of robust regulatory frameworks to determine safe thresholds for pesticide concentrations in water and the development of effective treatment methods. This assessment underscores the complex ecological risks associated with organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) and emphasizes the urgent need for strategic management and regulatory measures. This study presents a detailed examination of the global prevalence of OPPs and their potential adverse effects on aquatic and human life. A comprehensive risk assessment identifies azinphos-methyl, chlorpyrifos, and profenfos as posing considerable ecological hazard to fathead minnow, daphnia magna, and T. pyriformis. Additionally, this review explores the potential efficacy of constructed wetlands (CWs) as a sustainable approach for mitigating wastewater contamination by diverse pesticide compounds. Furthermore, the review assess the effectiveness of CWs for treating wastewater contaminated with pesticides by critically analyzing the removal mechanism and key factors. The study suggests that the optimal pH range for CWs is 6-8, with higher temperatures promoting microbial breakdown and lower temperatures enhancing pollutant removal through adsorption and sedimentation. The importance of wetland vegetation in promoting sorption, absorption, and degradation processes is emphasized. The study emphasizes the importance of hydraulic retention time (HRT) in designing, operating, and maintaining CWs for pesticide-contaminated water treatment. The current need for the upgradation of biohydrogen generation and contaminant removal in two-chambered microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) compels the design of alternatives i.e. bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) to conventional reactors. In this study, a novel three-chambered design of MEC (BES-1) was developed with a common anodic chamber and a two-cathodic chambers at both ends of the anodic chamber, separated by a membrane (MEC-MEC). To facilitate electricity recovery, a microbial fuel cell (MFC) was integrated with an MEC in BES-2. Cathodic hydrogen recovery of 8.89 and 4.81 mL/L.day, and organic matter removal of 82% and 76% were obtained in BES-1 and BES-2, respectively, demonstrating their capabilities for bioremediation. Electrochemical analyses also revealed that cathodic reduction reactions improved with the effective utilization of protons during integration. Our design regulates H 2 /O 2 -associated electrochemical reactions and is beneficial for maintaining pH equilibrium. From cost and energy perspectives, the integrated BES provides a platform for two different reactions simultaneously and is capable of boosting overall hydrogen recovery and organic matter removal. Textile wastewater, laden with persistent dyes and non-biodegradable organics, poses a challenge for treatment in common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) using conventional methods. Pre-treatment of textile effluents is essential to ensure compatibility with CETPs. The present study employed three-dimensional (3D) aluminum and graphite electrodes for a sequential electro-coagulation and electro-Fenton (EC + EF) process. An experimental plan of 25 experiments was constructed using Taguchi method. The combination resulted in high removal efficiencies: 99.91% for color, 93.20% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), and 91.75% for total organic carbon (TOC) for the operating parameters; for EC, current density (J): 20 mA/cm 2 , time (t): 45 min, speed of rotation (N): 55 rpm; and for EF, current density (J): 25 mA/cm 2 , time (t): 50 min, iron concentration: 40 mg/L. Post-treatment, the wastewater exhibited an enhanced biodegradability index of 0.875, rendering it suitable for CETPs. There was an increase of 11% in the total energy consumption when energy spent during rotation and aeration at the time of EC and EF, respectively, were considered. This energy increases the cost and is not accounted for, in previous research. The energy consumption in kWh per g of COD removed at optimum condition for the hybrid treatment was 0.0314, which is lower than the energy consumption by other electrochemical processes employing plate electrodes. This indicates that 3D electrodes are more energy efficient than plate electrodes. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Hybrid electrochemical processes can be used as pre-treatment method for textile effluents. Three-dimensional electrodes improve removal rates with lower energy consumption. Significant color, COD, and TOC abatement were noted post-hybrid treatment of textile wastewater. Anaerobic treatment of industrial wastewater using upflow anaerobic reactors is an extended trend due to its high efficiency and biogas production potential, but its implementation in some sectors is limited due to the complexity and toxicity of the wastewaters. In this study, a two-stage expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors system has been investigated at both bench and pilot scale for the treatment of complex and toxic real wastewater from a petrochemical industry. The effect of different operational parameters including organic loading rate (OLR), hydraulic retention time (HRT) and influent characteristics over COD removal and biogas production and composition have been studied. Additionally, biomass specific methanogenic activity (SMA) and wastewater toxicity have been evaluated after long-term operation. Optimum total HRT of 24 h has been determined resulting in total COD and SO 4 2- removal of 56.30 ± 5.25% and 31.68 ± 14.71%, respectively, at pilot scale, and average biogas production of 93.47 ± 34.92 NL/day with 67.01 ± 10.23 %CH 4 content and 5210.11 ± 6802.27 ppmv of H 2 S. SMA and toxicity tests have confirmed inhibitory and toxic effects of wastewater over anaerobic biomass with average maximum inhibition of 65.34% in the unacclimated anaerobic inoculum while chronic toxicity produced a decrease of an order of magnitude in SMA after 600 days of operation. This study demonstrates the feasibility of applying an anaerobic treatment to this wastewater using EGSB reactors between a 0.97-1.74 gCOD/L/day OLR range. Nonetheless, periodic reinoculation would be necessary for long-term operation due to chronic toxicity of the wastewater exerted on the anaerobic biomass. Neonicotinoid pesticides are a relatively new class of pesticides that have garnered significant attention owing to their potential ecological risks to nontarget organisms. A method combining solid phase extraction with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (SPE-LC-MS/MS) was developed for the rapid and accurate detection of eight neonicotinoid pesticides (dinotefuran, E -nitenpyram, thiamethoxam, clothianidin, imidacloprid, imidaclothiz, acetamiprid, and thiacloprid) in wastewater. The chromatographic mobile phase and MS parameters were selected, and a single-factor method was used to determine the optimal column type, extraction volume, sample loading speed, and pH for SPE. The optimal parameters were as follows: column type, HLB column (500 mg/6 mL); sample extraction volume, 500 mL; sample loading speed, 10 mL/min; and sample pH, 6-8. The matrix effects of the wastewater samples were reduced by optimizing the chromatographic gradient-elution program, examining the dilution factor of the samples, and using the isotope internal standard calibration method. Prior to analysis, the wastewater samples were diluted 5-fold with ultrapure water for pretreatment. Subsequently, 2 mmol/L ammonium acetate aqueous solution containing 0.1% (v/v) formic acid and methanol was used as mobile phases for gradient elution on a ZORBAX Eclipse Plus C18 column (100 mm×2.1 mm, 1.8 μm). The samples were quantified using positive-ion multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode for 10 min. Imidacloprid-d4 was used as the isotope internal standard. The SPE process was further optimized by applying response surface methodology to select the type and mass of rinsing and elution solvents. The optimal pretreatment of the SPE column included rinsing with 10% methanol aqueous solution and elution with methanol-acetonitrile (1∶1, v/v) mixture (7 mL). The eight neonicotinoid pesticides showed satisfactory linearity within the relevant range, with linear correlation coefficients ( r ) all greater than 0.9990. The method detection limits (MDLs) ranged from 0.2 to 1.2 ng/L, and the method quantification limits (MQLs) ranged from 0.8 to 4.8 ng/L. The average recoveries of the eight neonicotinoid pesticides were in the range of 82.6%-94.2% at three spiked levels, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 3.9% to 9.4%. Finally, the optimized method was successfully applied to analyze wastewater samples collected from four sewage treatment plants. The results indicated that the eight neonicotinoid pesticides could be generally detected at concentrations ranging from not detected (ND) to 256 ng/L. The developed method has a low MDL and high accuracy, rendering it a suitable choice for the trace detection of the eight neonicotinoid pesticides in wastewater when compared with other similar methods. The proposed method can be utilized to monitor the environmental impact and assess the potential risks of neonicotinoid pesticides in wastewater, thus promoting the protection of nontarget organisms and the sustainable use of these pesticides in agriculture.

The risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has been paid more attention after the outbreak of COVID-19, threatening the ecology and human health resulted from the massive use of drugs and disinfectants. Wastewater treatment plants are considered the final stop to restrict PPCPs from wide spreading into the environment, but the performance of conventional treatment is limited due to their concentrations and characteristics. Previous studies have shown the unreplaceable capability of moving bed-biofilm reactor (MBBR) as a cost-effective method with layered microbial structure for treating wastewater even with toxic compounds. The biofilm community and microbial interactions are essential for the MBBR process in completely degrading or converting types of PPCPs to secondary metabolites, which still need further investigation. This review starts with discussing the initiation of MBBR formation and its influencing parameters according to the research on MBBRs in the recent years. Then the efficiency of MBBRs and the response of biofilm after exposure to PPCPs are further addressed, followed by the bottlenecks proposed in this field. Some critical approaches are also recommended for mitigating the deficiencies of MBBRs based on the recently published publications to reduce the environmental risk of PPCPs. The positive contributions of carriers to aerobic granulation have been wildly appreciated. In this study, as a way resource utilization, the dredged sediment was thermally-treated to prepared as carriers to promote aerobic granular sludge (AGS) formation and stability. The system was started under low superficial gas velocity (SGV, 0.6 cm/s)for a lower energy consumption. Two sequencing batch reactors (SBR) labeled R1 (no added carriers) and R2 (carriers added), were used in the experiment. R2 had excellent performance of granulation time (shortened nearly 43%). The maximum mean particle size at the maturity stage of AGS in R2 (0.545 mm) was larger compared to R1 (0.296 mm). The sludge settling performance in R2 was better. The reactors exhibited high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N) removal rates. The total phosphorus (TP) removal rate in R2 was higher than R1 (almost 15% higher) on stage II (93-175d). R2 had a higher microbial abundance and dominant bacteria content. The relative abundance of dominant species was mainly affected by the carrier. However, the enrichment of dominant microorganisms and the evolution of subdominant species were more influenced by the increase of SGV. The results indicated that the addition of carriers induced the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) by microorganisms and accelerated the rapid formation of initial microbial aggregates. Digestates from low-tech digesters need to be post-treated to ensure their safe agricultural reuse. This study evaluated, for the first time, vermifiltration as a post-treatment for the digestate from a low-tech digester implemented in a small-scale farm, treating cattle manure and cheese whey under psychrophilic conditions. Vermifiltration performance was monitored in terms of solids, organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens removal efficiency. In addition, the growth of earthworms (Eisenia foetida) and their role in the process was evaluated. Finally, the vermicompost and the effluent of the vermifilter were characterized in order to assess their potential reuse in agriculture. Vermifilters showed high removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (55-90%), total solids (60-80%), ammonium nitrogen (83-97%), and phosphate-P (28-49%). Earthworms effectively grew and reproduced on digestate (i.e. earthworms number increased by 183%), enhancing the vermifiltration performance, while reducing clogging and odour-related issues. Both the vermicompost and effluent produced complied with legislation limits established for soil improvers and wastewater for fertigation, respectively. Indeed, there was an absence of pathogens and non-detectable heavy metals concentrations. Background: An increasing number of β 2 -adrenergic agonists are illicitly used for growth promoting and lean meat increasing in animal husbandry in recent years, but the development of analytical methods has lagged behind these emerging drugs., Results: Here, we designed and developed an ultrasound probe enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis reactor for quick separation and simultaneously quantification of 22 β 2 -adrenergic agonists in animal urine and livestock wastewater. Owing to the enhancement of the conventional enzymatic digestion through the ultrasound acoustic probe power, only 2 min was required for the comprehensively separation of β 2 -adrenergic agonists from the sample matrices, making it a much more desirable alternative tool for high-throughput investigation. The swine, bovine and sheep urines (n = 287), and livestock wastewater (n = 15) samples, collected from both the north and south China, were examined to demonstrate the feasibility and capability of the proposed approach. Six kinds of β 2 -adrenergic agonists (clenbuterol, salbutamol, ractopamine, terbutaline, clorprenaline and cimaterol) were found in animal urines, with concentrations ranged between 0.056 μg/L (terbutaline) and 5.79 μg/L (clenbuterol). Up to nine β 2 -adrenergic agonists were detected in wastewater samples, of which four were found in swine farms and nine in cattle/sheep farms, with concentration levels from 0.069 μg/L (tulobuterol) to 2470 μg/L (clenbuterol)., Significance: Interestingly, since β 2 -adrenergic agonists are usually considered to be abused mainly in the pig farms, our data indicate that both the detection frequencies and concentrations of these agonists in the ruminant farms were higher than the pig farms. Furthermore, the findings of this work indicated that there is a widespread occurrence of β 2 -adrenergic agonists in livestock farms, especially for clenbuterol and salbutamol, which may pose both food safety and potential ecological risks. The removal of tetracycline antibiotics using adsorbents is becoming an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method. This study systematically analyzed the stability, structure, morphology, and chemical properties of various adsorbents. Batch adsorption experiments (pH, time, temperature, tetracycline concentration, and adsorbent dosage) were conducted to compare the adsorption capacity of the six adsorbents (biochar, activated carbon, montmorillonite, zeolite, chitosan, and polymerized aluminum chloride) for tetracycline removal. The results indicated that montmorillonite had the highest adsorption efficiency, followed by biochar, with chitosan showing the lowest efficiency. At an adsorbent dose of 25 g/L and an initial tetracycline concentration of 120 mg/L, the removal rates of tetracycline by montmorillonite, biochar, and chitosan were 97.6%, 69.3%, and 12.2%, respectively. Furthermore, the removal rate of tetracycline by biochar, following the response surface methodology optimal mode, increased by 5.5%. The Elovich model was better suited to explain the adsorption process of tetracycline compared to the conventional pseudo-first kinetic model and second-order kinetic model. The isothermal adsorption model suggested that both chemisorption and physisorption occurred in all removal processes, in which chemisorption dominated. Tetracycline was efficiently adsorbed through the combined effects of pore filling, electrostatic attraction, π-π interactions, and complexation reactions of surface functional groups. This study evaluates the effectiveness of microalgal-based carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles (ME-nFe) in the removal of pharmaceutical compounds (PhACs) from water solutions and real municipal effluent at a laboratory scale. The investigated PhACs were chosen to represent different classes of synthetic drugs: antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, antihypertensives, antiepileptics, neuroprotectors, and antidepressants. The adsorbent material was produced through hydrothermal carbonization (225 °C for 3 h), using microalgae grown on wastewater as the carbon source. ME-nFe showed heterogeneity in terms of porosity (with both abundance of macro and mesopores), a total pore volume of 0.65 mL g -1 , a specific surface area of 117 m 2  g -1 and a total iron content of 40%. Laboratory scale adsorption tests (1 g L -1 of nanoparticles with 2 min contact time) showed high removal for the most hydrophobic compounds. Removal efficiencies were high (over 98%) for Irbesartan, Ofloxacin and Diclofenac, promising (over 65-80%) for Clarithromycin, Fluoxetine, Lamotrigine and Metoprolol, but low for Gabapentin-Lactam and Propyphenazone (<20%). The aquaculture industry is among the fastest growing food production sectors in the world. Land-based aquaculture systems continue to increase in popularity as they offer the benefits of controlling diseases, managing water quality, and minimizing threats to wild populations of fish. However, these systems discharge wastewater high in N and P. The ability of cattail (Typha spp.) constructed wetlands (CWs) to remove N and P from aquaculture wastewater (AWW) was examined here. Cattail CWs were established in mesocosms and had a gradient of AWW applied weekly for a total of 5 weeks. Total N and P loadings ranged from 13.7 to 209.2 mg m -2 and 3.01 to 45.97 mg m -2 over 28 days, respectively. Additions of AWW did not cause elevations in total dissolved N, total ammonia N, or nitrite N in CW water; however, concentrations of nitrate N and P in CW water were related to nutrient loading conditions. Elevations in P persisted for 3-4 weeks among high nutrient loading treatments, providing an opportunity for eutrophic conditions to develop in CW systems. However, after 33 days of treatment, >95% total P concentration reduction was achieved in all mesocosms with final concentrations <0.05 mg L -1 , equivalent to reference conditions. High-loading treatments achieved greater P load reduction (856.8-955.0 mg m -2  year -1 ) than low-loading and reference treatments (591.7-792.7 mg m -2  year -1 ). This study demonstrates the effectiveness of cattail CWs to remove nutrients during AWW treatment and highlights the potential for end-of-season use in northern climates, providing insights regarding the operational timeline of such systems., (© 2024 The Author(s).
