Detecting primordial fluctuations from the cosmic dark ages requires extremely large low-frequency radio telescope arrays deployed on the far side of the Moon. The antenna of such an array must be lightweight, easily storable and transportable, deployable on a large scale, durable, and capable of good electrical performance. A membrane antenna is an excellent candidate to meet these criteria. We study the design of a low-frequency membrane antenna for a lunar-based low-frequency (<30 MHz) radio telescope constructed from polyimide film widely used in aerospace applications, owing to its excellent dielectric properties and high stability as a substrate material. We first design and optimize an antenna in free space through dipole deformation and coupling principles, then simulate an antenna on the lunar surface with a simple lunar soil model, yielding an efficiency greater than 90% in the range of 12-19 MHz and greater than 10% in the range of 5-35 MHz. The antenna inherits the omni-directional radiation pattern of a simple dipole antenna in the 5-30 MHz frequency band, giving a large field of view and allowing detection of the 21 cm global signal when used alone. A demonstration prototype is constructed, and its measured electrical property is found to be consistent with simulated results using |S11| measurements. Although humans have the innate ability to imagine multiple possible actions from videos, it remains an extraordinary challenge for computers due to the intricate camera movements and montages. Most existing motion generation methods predominantly rely on manually collected motion datasets, usually tediously sourced from motion capture (Mocap) systems or Multi-View cameras, unavoidably resulting in a limited size that severely undermines their generalizability. Inspired by recent advance of diffusion models, we probe a simple and effective way to capture motions from videos and propose a novel Video-to-Motion-Generation framework (ViMo) which could leverage the immense trove of untapped video content to produce abundant and diverse 3D human motions. Distinct from prior work, our videos could be more causal, including complicated camera movements and occlusions. Striking experimental results demonstrate the proposed model could generate natural motions even for videos where rapid movements, varying perspectives, or frequent occlusions might exist. We also show this work could enable three important downstream applications, such as generating dancing motions according to arbitrary music and source video style. Extensive experimental results prove that our model offers an effective and scalable way to generate diversity and realistic motions. Code and demos will be public soon.

The preparation of quantum states is essential in the realm of quantum information processing, and the development of efficient methodologies can significantly alleviate the strain on quantum resources. Within the framework of deep reinforcement learning (DRL), we integrate the initial and the target state information within the state preparation task together, so as to realize the control trajectory design between two arbitrary quantum states. Utilizing a semiconductor double quantum dots (DQDs) model, our results demonstrate that the resulting control trajectories can effectively achieve arbitrary quantum state preparation (AQSP) for both single-qubit and two-qubit systems, with average fidelities of 0.9868 and 0.9556 for the test sets, respectively. Furthermore, we consider the noise around the system and the control trajectories exhibit commendable robustness against charge and nuclear noise. Our study not only substantiates the efficacy of DRL in QSP, but also provides a new solution for quantum control tasks of multi-initial and multi-objective states, and is expected to be extended to a wider range of quantum control problems.

The mean field control problem for a multi-dimensional diffusion-aggregation system with Coulomb interaction is considered. The existence of optimal control is proved through the Gamma convergence of the control problem of a regularized particle control problem. The optimal control problem on the particle level is studied by using the corresponding Liouville equation. Because of strong aggregation effect, additional difficulties arises from control function in the well-posedness theory, so that the known method for multi-dimensional Keller-Segel equation can not be directly applied. We use a combination of local existence result and boot-strap argument to obtain the global solution with small initial data. Since we obtain a strong propagation of chaos result by combining the convergence in probability and relative entropy method, the compact support requirement for control functions, which has been often used in the literature, is not need.

Non-Hermitian dynamics in quantum systems have unveiled novel phenomena, yet the implementation of valid non-Hermitian quantum measurement remains a challenge, because a universal quantum projective mechanism on the complete but skewed non-Hermitian eigenstates is not explicit in experiment. This limitation hinders the direct acquisition of non-Hermitian observable statistics (e.g., non-Hermitian population dynamics), also constrains investigations of non-Hermitian quantum measurement properties such as uncertainty relation. Here, we address these challenges by presenting a non-Hermitian projective protocol and investigating the non-Hermitian uncertainty relation. We derive the uncertainty relation for pseudo-Hermitian (PH) observables that is generalized beyond the Hermitian ones. We then investigate the projective properties of general quantum states onto complete non-Hermitian eigenvectors, and present a quantum simulating method to apply the valid non-Hermitian projective measurement on a direct-sum dilated space. Subsequently, we experimentally construct a quantum simulator in the quantum optical circuit and realize the 3-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum measurement on the single-photon qutrit. Employing this platform, we explore the uncertainty relation experimentally with different PH metrics. Environment induced steady state quantum coherence (SSQC) is a captivating phenomenon that challenges conventional understandings of decoherence. In this letter, we delve into the foundational aspects of environment-induced SSQC, shedding light on its emergence within the framework of system-bath interactions. Starting from a microscopic system-bath coupled model, we investigate the dependence of SSQC on environmental memory effects, bath temperature, system-bath coupling strength, and squeezing parameters. Our findings reveal that the environment not only acts as a generator but also as a disruptor of SSQC. A peak will exist for a non-Markovian bath, which is a result of competition between these two mechanisms. Interestingly, the peak disappears in Markovian case. The emergence of the large language model~(LLM) poses an exponential growth of demand for computation throughput, memory capacity, and communication bandwidth. Such a demand growth has significantly surpassed the improvement of corresponding chip designs. With the advancement of fabrication and integration technologies, designers have been developing Wafer-Scale Chips(WSCs) to scale up and exploit the limits of computation density, memory capacity, and communication bandwidth at the level of a single chip. Existing solutions have demonstrated the significant advantages of WSCs over traditional designs, showing potential to effectively support LLM workloads. Despite the benefits, exploring the early-stage design space of WSCs for LLMs is a crucial yet challenging task due to the enormous and complicated design space, time-consuming evaluation methods, and inefficient exploration strategies. To address these challenges, we propose Theseus, an efficient WSC design space exploration framework for LLMs. We construct the design space of WSCs with various constraints considering the unique characteristics of WSCs. We propose efficient evaluation methodologies for large-scale NoC-based WSCs and introduce multi-fidelity Bayesian optimization to efficiently explore the design space. Evaluation results demonstrate the efficiency of Theseus that the searched Pareto optimal results outperform GPU cluster and existing WSC designs by up to 62.8%/73.7% in performance and 38.6%/42.4% in power consumption for LLM training, while improving up to 23.2$\times$ and 15.7$\times$ for the performance and power of inference tasks. Furthermore, we conduct case studies to address the design tradeoffs in WSCs and provide insights to facilitate WSC designs for LLMs.

While significant advancements have been made in compressed representations for text embeddings in large language models (LLMs), the compression of visual tokens in large multi-modal models (LMMs) has remained a largely overlooked area. In this work, we present the study on the analysis of redundancy concerning visual tokens and efficient training within these models. Our initial experiments show that eliminating up to 70% of visual tokens at the testing stage by simply average pooling only leads to a minimal 3% reduction in visual question answering accuracy on the GQA benchmark, indicating significant redundancy in visual context. Addressing this, we introduce Visual Context Compressor, which reduces the number of visual tokens during training to enhance training efficiency without sacrificing performance. To minimize information loss caused by the compression on visual tokens while maintaining training efficiency, we develop LLaVolta as a lite training scheme. LLaVolta incorporates stage-wise visual context compression to progressively compress the visual tokens from heavily to lightly, and finally no compression at the end of training, yielding no loss of information when testing. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach enhances the performance of MLLMs in both image-language and video-language understanding, while also significantly cutting training costs. The digital correlator is one of the most crucial data processing components of a radio telescope array. With the scale of radio interferometeric array growing, many efforts have been devoted to developing a cost-effective and scalable correlator in the field of radio astronomy. In this paper, a 192-input digital correlator with six CASPER ROACH2 boards and seven GPU servers has been deployed as the digital signal processing system for Tianlai cylinder pathfinder located in Hongliuxia observatory. The correlator consists of 192 input signals (96 dual-polarization), 125-MHz bandwidth, and full-Stokes output. The correlator inherits the advantages of the CASPER system, for example, low cost, high performance, modular scalability, and a heterogeneous computing architecture. In this paper, we introduce a novel path to $\textit{general}$ human motion generation by focusing on 2D space. Traditional methods have primarily generated human motions in 3D, which, while detailed and realistic, are often limited by the scope of available 3D motion data in terms of both the size and the diversity. To address these limitations, we exploit extensive availability of 2D motion data. We present $\textbf{Holistic-Motion2D}$, the first comprehensive and large-scale benchmark for 2D whole-body motion generation, which includes over 1M in-the-wild motion sequences, each paired with high-quality whole-body/partial pose annotations and textual descriptions. Notably, Holistic-Motion2D is ten times larger than the previously largest 3D motion dataset. We also introduce a baseline method, featuring innovative $\textit{whole-body part-aware attention}$ and $\textit{confidence-aware modeling}$ techniques, tailored for 2D $\underline{\text T}$ext-driv$\underline{\text{EN}}$ whole-bo$\underline{\text D}$y motion gen$\underline{\text{ER}}$ation, namely $\textbf{Tender}$. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of $\textbf{Holistic-Motion2D}$ and $\textbf{Tender}$ in generating expressive, diverse, and realistic human motions. Recent advancements in offline Reinforcement Learning (Offline RL) have led to an increased focus on methods based on conservative policy updates to address the Out-of-Distribution (OOD) issue. These methods typically involve adding behavior regularization or modifying the critic learning objective, focusing primarily on states or actions with substantial dataset support. However, we challenge this prevailing notion by asserting that the absence of an action or state from a dataset does not necessarily imply its suboptimality. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to tackle the OOD problem. We introduce an offline RL teacher-student framework, complemented by a policy similarity measure. This framework enables the student policy to gain insights not only from the offline RL dataset but also from the knowledge transferred by a teacher policy. The teacher policy is trained using another dataset consisting of state-action pairs, which can be viewed as practical domain knowledge acquired without direct interaction with the environment. We believe this additional knowledge is key to effectively solving the OOD issue. This research represents a significant advancement in integrating a teacher-student network into the actor-critic framework, opening new avenues for studies on knowledge transfer in offline RL and effectively addressing the OOD challenge.

With the ability to learn from static datasets, Offline Reinforcement Learning (RL) emerges as a compelling avenue for real-world applications. However, state-of-the-art offline RL algorithms perform sub-optimally when confronted with limited data confined to specific regions within the state space. The performance degradation is attributed to the inability of offline RL algorithms to learn appropriate actions for rare or unseen observations. This paper proposes a novel domain knowledge-based regularization technique and adaptively refines the initial domain knowledge to considerably boost performance in limited data with partially omitted states. The key insight is that the regularization term mitigates erroneous actions for sparse samples and unobserved states covered by domain knowledge. Empirical evaluations on standard discrete environment datasets demonstrate a substantial average performance increase of at least 27% compared to existing offline RL algorithms operating on limited data.

Continuous diffusion models have demonstrated their effectiveness in addressing the inherent uncertainty and indeterminacy in monocular 3D human pose estimation (HPE). Despite their strengths, the need for large search spaces and the corresponding demand for substantial training data make these models prone to generating biomechanically unrealistic poses. This challenge is particularly noticeable in occlusion scenarios, where the complexity of inferring 3D structures from 2D images intensifies. In response to these limitations, we introduce the Discrete Diffusion Pose ($\text{Di}^2\text{Pose}$), a novel framework designed for occluded 3D HPE that capitalizes on the benefits of a discrete diffusion model. Specifically, $\text{Di}^2\text{Pose}$ employs a two-stage process: it first converts 3D poses into a discrete representation through a \emph{pose quantization step}, which is subsequently modeled in latent space through a \emph{discrete diffusion process}. This methodological innovation restrictively confines the search space towards physically viable configurations and enhances the model's capability to comprehend how occlusions affect human pose within the latent space. Extensive evaluations conducted on various benchmarks (e.g., Human3.6M, 3DPW, and 3DPW-Occ) have demonstrated its effectiveness.

Time series prediction (TSP) has been widely used in various fields, such as life sciences and finance, to forecast future trends based on historical data. However, to date, there has been relatively little research conducted on the TSP for quantum physics. In this paper, we explore the potential application of TSP in forecasting the dynamical evolution of open quantum systems. We employ deep learning techniques to train a TSP model and evaluate its performance by comparison with exact solution. We use the ratio of the prediction step length and the sequence length to define short and long-term forecasting. Our results show that the trained model has the ability to effectively capture the inherent characteristics of time series for both short-term and long-term forecasting. Accurate predictions for different coupling intensities and initial states are obtained. Furthermore, we use our method to train another model and find that it can successfully predict the steady state of the system. These findings suggests that TSP is a valuable tool for the prediction of the dynamics in open quantum systems.

Video try-on is a challenging task and has not been well tackled in previous works. The main obstacle lies in preserving the details of the clothing and modeling the coherent motions simultaneously. Faced with those difficulties, we address video try-on by proposing a diffusion-based framework named "Tunnel Try-on." The core idea is excavating a "focus tunnel" in the input video that gives close-up shots around the clothing regions. We zoom in on the region in the tunnel to better preserve the fine details of the clothing. To generate coherent motions, we first leverage the Kalman filter to construct smooth crops in the focus tunnel and inject the position embedding of the tunnel into attention layers to improve the continuity of the generated videos. In addition, we develop an environment encoder to extract the context information outside the tunnels as supplementary cues. Equipped with these techniques, Tunnel Try-on keeps the fine details of the clothing and synthesizes stable and smooth videos. Medical vision-language pre-training has emerged as a promising approach for learning domain-general representations of medical image and text. Current algorithms that exploit the global and local alignment between medical image and text could however be marred by the redundant information in medical data. To address this issue, we propose a grounded knowledge-enhanced medical vision-language pre-training (GK-MVLP) framework for chest X-ray. In this framework, medical knowledge is grounded to the appropriate anatomical regions by using a transformer-based grounded knowledge-enhanced module for fine-grained alignment between anatomical region-level visual features and the textural features of medical knowledge. The performance of GK-MVLP is competitive with or exceeds the state of the art on downstream chest X-ray disease classification, disease localization, report generation, and medical visual question-answering tasks. Our results show the advantage of incorporating grounding mechanism to remove biases and improve the alignment between chest X-ray image and radiology report.

Human motion prediction is consisting in forecasting future body poses from historically observed sequences. It is a longstanding challenge due to motion's complex dynamics and uncertainty. Existing methods focus on building up complicated neural networks to model the motion dynamics. The predicted results are required to be strictly similar to the training samples with L2 loss in current training pipeline. However, little attention has been paid to the uncertainty property which is crucial to the prediction task. We argue that the recorded motion in training data could be an observation of possible future, rather than a predetermined result. In addition, existing works calculate the predicted error on each future frame equally during training, while recent work indicated that different frames could play different roles. In this work, a novel computationally efficient encoder-decoder model with uncertainty consideration is proposed, which could learn proper characteristics for future frames by a dynamic function. Experimental results on benchmark datasets demonstrate that our uncertainty consideration approach has obvious advantages both in quantity and quality. Moreover, the proposed method could produce motion sequences with much better quality that avoids the intractable shaking artefacts. We believe our work could provide a novel perspective to consider the uncertainty quality for the general motion prediction task and encourage the studies in this field. Classical object detectors are incapable of detecting novel class objects that are not encountered before. Regarding this issue, Open-Vocabulary Object Detection (OVOD) is proposed, which aims to detect the objects in the candidate class list. However, current OVOD models are suffering from overfitting on the base classes, heavily relying on the large-scale extra data, and complex training process. To overcome these issues, we propose a novel framework with Meta prompt and Instance Contrastive learning (MIC) schemes. Firstly, we simulate a novel-class-emerging scenario to help the prompt learner that learns class and background prompts generalize to novel classes. Secondly, we design an instance-level contrastive strategy to promote intra-class compactness and inter-class separation, which benefits generalization of the detector to novel class objects. Without using knowledge distillation, ensemble model or extra training data during detector training, our proposed MIC outperforms previous SOTA methods trained with these complex techniques on LVIS. Most importantly, MIC shows great generalization ability on novel classes, e.g., with $+4.3\%$ and $+1.9\% \ \mathrm{AP}$ improvement compared with previous SOTA on COCO and Objects365, respectively., Comment: BMVC 2023

Large-scale pre-training followed by downstream fine-tuning is an effective solution for transferring deep-learning-based models. Since finetuning all possible pre-trained models is computational costly, we aim to predict the transferability performance of these pre-trained models in a computational efficient manner. Different from previous work that seek out suitable models for downstream classification and segmentation tasks, this paper studies the efficient transferability assessment of pre-trained object detectors. To this end, we build up a detector transferability benchmark which contains a large and diverse zoo of pre-trained detectors with various architectures, source datasets and training schemes. Given this zoo, we adopt 7 target datasets from 5 diverse domains as the downstream target tasks for evaluation. Further, we propose to assess classification and regression sub-tasks simultaneously in a unified framework. Additionally, we design a complementary metric for evaluating tasks with varying objects. Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms other state-of-the-art approaches in assessing transferability under different target domains while efficiently reducing wall-clock time 32$\times$ and requires a mere 5.2\% memory footprint compared to brute-force fine-tuning of all pre-trained detectors., Comment: WACV 2024

This study aimed to develop a deep learning model for the classification of bearing faults in wind turbine generators from acoustic signals. A convolutional LSTM model was successfully constructed and trained by using audio data from five predefined fault types for both training and validation. To create the dataset, raw audio signal data was collected and processed in frames to capture time and frequency domain information. The model exhibited outstanding accuracy on training samples and demonstrated excellent generalization ability during validation, indicating its proficiency of generalization capability. On the test samples, the model achieved remarkable classification performance, with an overall accuracy exceeding 99.5%, and a false positive rate of less than 1% for normal status. The findings of this study provide essential support for the diagnosis and maintenance of bearing faults in wind turbine generators, with the potential to enhance the reliability and efficiency of wind power generation.

We introduce an approach for estimating the expectation values of arbitrary $n$-qubit matrices $M \in \mathbb{C}^{2^n\times 2^n}$ on a quantum computer. In contrast to conventional methods like the Pauli decomposition that utilize $4^n$ distinct quantum circuits for this task, our technique employs at most $2^n$ unique circuits, with even fewer required for matrices with limited bandwidth. Termed the \textit{partial Pauli decomposition}, our method involves observables formed as the Kronecker product of a single-qubit Pauli operator and orthogonal projections onto the computational basis. By measuring each such observable, one can simultaneously glean information about $2^n$ distinct entries of $M$ through post-processing of the measurement counts. This reduction in quantum resources is especially crucial in the current noisy intermediate-scale quantum era, offering the potential to accelerate quantum algorithms that rely heavily on expectation estimation, such as the variational quantum eigensolver and the quantum approximate optimization algorithm., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Surgical 3D reconstruction is a critical area of research in robotic surgery, with recent works adopting variants of dynamic radiance fields to achieve success in 3D reconstruction of deformable tissues from single-viewpoint videos. However, these methods often suffer from time-consuming optimization or inferior quality, limiting their adoption in downstream tasks. Inspired by 3D Gaussian Splatting, a recent trending 3D representation, we present EndoGS, applying Gaussian Splatting for deformable endoscopic tissue reconstruction. Specifically, our approach incorporates deformation fields to handle dynamic scenes, depth-guided supervision with spatial-temporal weight masks to optimize 3D targets with tool occlusion from a single viewpoint, and surface-aligned regularization terms to capture the much better geometry. As a result, EndoGS reconstructs and renders high-quality deformable endoscopic tissues from a single-viewpoint video, estimated depth maps, and labeled tool masks. Experiments on DaVinci robotic surgery videos demonstrate that EndoGS achieves superior rendering quality. From these results and the Lion's theory we deduce the existence of an optimal solution to the control problem governed by the viscous k-FORQ/MCH equation. Customized text-to-video generation aims to generate high-quality videos guided by text prompts and subject references. Current approaches for personalizing text-to-video generation suffer from tackling multiple subjects, which is a more challenging and practical scenario. In this work, our aim is to promote multi-subject guided text-to-video customization. We propose CustomVideo, a novel framework that can generate identity-preserving videos with the guidance of multiple subjects. To be specific, firstly, we encourage the co-occurrence of multiple subjects via composing them in a single image. Further, upon a basic text-to-video diffusion model, we design a simple yet effective attention control strategy to disentangle different subjects in the latent space of diffusion model. Moreover, to help the model focus on the specific area of the object, we segment the object from given reference images and provide a corresponding object mask for attention learning. Also, we collect a multi-subject text-to-video generation dataset as a comprehensive benchmark, with 63 individual subjects from 13 different categories and 68 meaningful pairs. Extensive qualitative, quantitative, and user study results demonstrate the superiority of our method compared to previous state-of-the-art approaches. Gentrification--the transformation of a low-income urban area caused by the influx of affluent residents--has many revitalizing benefits. However, it also poses extremely concerning challenges to low-income residents. To help policymakers take targeted and early action in protecting low-income residents, researchers have recently proposed several machine learning models to predict gentrification using socioeconomic and image features. Building upon previous studies, we propose a novel graph-based multimodal deep learning framework to predict gentrification based on urban networks of tracts and essential facilities (e.g., schools, hospitals, and subway stations). We train and test the proposed framework using data from Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles. The model successfully predicts census-tract level gentrification with 0.9 precision on average. Moreover, the framework discovers a previously unexamined strong relationship between schools and gentrification, which provides a basis for further exploration of social factors affecting gentrification.

Extended reality (XR) applications are Machine Learning (ML)-intensive, featuring deep neural networks (DNNs) with millions of weights, tightly latency-bound (10-20 ms end-to-end), and power-constrained (low tens of mW average power). While ML performance and efficiency can be achieved by introducing neural engines within low-power systems-on-chip (SoCs), system-level power for nontrivial DNNs depends strongly on the energy of non-volatile memory (NVM) access for network weights. This work introduces Siracusa, a near-sensor heterogeneous SoC for next-generation XR devices manufactured in 16 nm CMOS. Siracusa couples an octa-core cluster of RISC-V digital signal processing cores with a novel tightly-coupled "At-Memory" integration between a state-of-the-art digital neural engine called N-EUREKA and an on-chip NVM based on magnetoresistive memory(MRAM), achieving 1.7x higher throughput and 3x better energy efficiency than XR SoCs using NVM as background memory. Fears about the destabilizing impact of misinformation online have motivated individuals and platforms to respond. Individuals have become empowered to challenge others' online claims with fact-checks in pursuit of a healthier information ecosystem and to break down echo chambers of self-reinforcing opinion. Using Twitter data, here we show the consequences of individual misinformation tagging: tagged posters had explored novel political information and expanded topical interests immediately prior, but being tagged caused posters to retreat into information bubbles. These unintended consequences were softened by a collective verification system for misinformation moderation. In Twitter's new platform, Community Notes, misinformation tagging was peer-reviewed by other fact-checkers before exposure to the poster. With collective misinformation tagging, posters were less likely to retreat from diverse information engagement. Detailed comparison suggests differences in toxicity, sentiment, readability, and delay in individual versus collective misinformation tagging messages.
